Carbondale getting a new bike park Combined efforts to bring a new bike park to Carbondale will finally bear fruit this summer with projected ground breaking happening in early June. The project’s budget of $95,000 was leveraged using initial town support to land a $45,000 GOCO Colorado mini-grant, and then more recently a $25,000 Garfield County Federal Mineral Lease District grant.

Alpine Bank of Carbondale, along with additional donations from citizens and local businesses, make up the balance of the project budget. Carbondale’s Bicycle, Pedestrian, Trails Commission has been spearheading the effort, with critical support from the parks and recreation director and Public Works.

Currently the town is accepting requests for proposals (RFPs) from companies interested in building Carbondale’s new bike park.

Based on research and visits to existing bike parks the Bike, Pedestrian, Trails Commission decided early on to pursue a park designed to provide for a progression of riding features that would support the development of better riding skills and enhanced rider confidence. Such an approach prioritizes creating

a low bar to entry to encourage those new to the sport, allowing both young and older to ride the park’s features. Initial conceptual design and planning calls for features such as pump tracks, flow lines, skills area and a variety of dirt jump features. The end product will be a unique bike park that will put a smile on many a face for years to come.

Across the country the bike park movement has grown in recent years with communities both large and small developing parks designed to provide areas for mountain bikers to ride and jump and challenge themselves on man-made trails and features. Bike parks are different than a typical mountain bike trail in that extensive earth moving and sculpting is done to create features such as berms, rollers and jumps that riders negotiate to improve balance, finesse and flow.

Other features designed to provide riders with challenges and thrills might include obstacles and/or narrow bridges to mimic features encountered while riding single-track trails. If you’re still struggling to picture it, think of a cross between a ski area terrain

park and a skate park, but one designed for bicycles.

Soon Carbondale will have the first professionally designed and built bike park in Garfield County.

Project completion is scheduled for late August or early September. Similar to other successful town projects there is a concerted and ongoing effort to solicit both cash and inkind donations to help maximize the quality, size and number of features that the new park will contain. Cash support is always welcome, but additional specific needs include earthmoving and initial site grading, screening of onsite fill, spoils removal and donation of additional clean and/or screened fill.

Help us to create another awesome recreational resource for locals, but one that will also encourage tourists to visit our town.

Football in Carbondale: Is it dying? Are the fears of concussion and injury keeping parents from allowing their sons to play football in Carbondale and elsewhere? Why? No sport in America has greater participation than football, yet football is under attack due to long-term injuries affecting men who have played football in the National Football League (NFL). These men, many of whom have played contact football for 25 or so years from middle school through a pro career, are not good indictors of long-term injuries for the game we see in Carbondale. The percentage of boys who make it to the NFL is less then 1 percent.

Why do I bring this up? Because your son, if he chooses to play football, isn’t putting him-

self at risk at the same level as the men who have played the game for 25 years. The speed of the game, the size of the players and the level of competition are not the same.

I have participated in coaching football since 1993. I currently have a son who is about to play football in high school. I believe in football as a viable sport for our boys. Why? Because there is no other sport where participation crosses so many boundaries. I have played many other sports and still do.

But football is my draw. Why? Because no other sport can put 22 young men on the field with various athletic abilities. Football doesn’t care about how athletic you are. It is as American as a sport can be. Hard work and determination make football work. Football is about building character and working

through adversity. It is about work ethic.

These are the foundations upon which Carbondale football was founded. No other sport pulls the town together like football when it’s successful.

History Football in Carbondale has a very long history of success. The very first year Carbondale went to the state football playoffs was 1946. There have been three state championships won in Carbondale. Carbondale/Roaring Fork has been to the playoffs 27 times and won the league 21 times. The last title was in 2006.

We currently have more boys out for football at Roaring Fork High School than we have had in many years. Our immediate future is filled with hope. But I fear for the future of football. We need volunteers to help provide coaching and help organize the Pee Wee boys. We also need coaches to help coach the middle school. If you are reading this and have played football, come help build our youth programs to keep a long-standing tradition of football going in Carbondale.

To the parents of the boys of Carbondale, get involved. Football has its risks, as does skate boarding, skiing or snowboarding, lacrosse, mountain biking, basketball, hockey or any other sport. We can’t live in a society where we fear getting hurt. Many generations have grown up playing contact sports. These activities often come with life lessons that have helped shape who we are. CCAH scales back Sopris Park summer concerts TSC steps up for shows

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Carbondale’s popular Summer of Music concert series in Sopris Park is being significantly scaled back this year, leaving just a couple of main events in the park and shifting some public concerts to another location in town.

The Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities (CCAH) will continue to be involved in putting on concerts during the summer months, explained CCAH Executive Director Amy Kimberly at a meeting of the town board of trustees on Tuesday.

But, she told The Sopris Sun in a telephone interview earlier on Tuesday, she and her staff hope to no longer be the main organizers of the concerts.

“We’ll still be involved, and I’ll probably still end up doing a lot of the work,” she said with a laugh, adding that she is hoping to engage other local arts organizations to take up the slack of organizing events.

The shift is in keeping with the recommendation of a special task force set up earlier this year to study complaints from residents living in the neighborhood around Sopris Park. Some neighbors of the park have for years been unhappy with the noise

and traffic associated with such events as the Carbondale Mountain Fair and other happenings held in the park.

Mountain Fair, which takes place at the end of July each year, will still be held in Sopris Park, Kimberly told the trustees on Tuesday, as will a solitary Summer of Music concert on July 13.

The Summer of Music shows at the Sopris Park Gazebo started about a decade ago as a partnership between CCAH and the town of Carbondale. Prior to that were several years of the Performance in the Park series, also at the Gazebo and also sponsored

by CCAH. Kimberly told the trustees that current plans call for a new series of three music-anda-movie events in the Community Partnership Park at the Third Street Center, 520 Third St. at the south end of town.

The series, called Third Sundays at Third, builds on the highly successful First Friday events held around town on the first Friday of every month.

The show dates for the music/movie events are June 22, July 10 and Aug. 17.

“This would be held in the town park behind the Third Street Center with local bands starting at 7 and a film following,” Kimberly wrote in a memo to the trustees. “Folks can bring lounge chairs, sleeping bags, picnics and fun. Popcorn will be served!”

She emphasized to the trustees that the movie screen and speakers will be aimed

westward, at nearby Highway 133, to avoid creating a disturbance for neighbors living to the south and east of the Third Street Center grounds.

Another event planned for this summer is the annual Boogie in Bonedale on July 4, in conjunction with that month’s First Friday, with area businesses, galleries and restaurants taking part in a celebration centered around the historic commercial core along Main Street.

In other action the trustees: • Unanimously appointed Scott Mills, Patrick Hunter, Lisa DiNardo and Christopher Ellis to serve on the town’s Environmental Board, joining current members Jason White, Jeff Lauckhart, Christopher Ullrich, Matt Gwost and Dave Bernhardt. The trustee liaison to the E-Board is Katrina Byars, and the staff liaison is Larry Ballenger.

• Unanimously approved the renaming of Bull Pasture Park, on the west side of Highway 133 near the junction with Prince Creek Road. The park’s new name is Nuche (pronounced “nooch”) Park, in honor of Ute Indians that populated this area prior to the white man’s arrival in the late 1800s. The name comes from the Ute name for the Crystal River Valley, “Nuche-Mu-Gu-AvatumAda’he” or “the people’s place of the heart,” as explained by Ute elders Roland McCook and the late Clifford Duncan.

• Unanimously approved a liquor license transfer to Finnbar’s Irish Pub & Kitchen, the

new eatery at the River Valley Ranch golf clubhouse, owned by Kelly Wyly O’Donovan and Denis O’Donovan Finbarr, according to documents at town hall.

• Unanimously approved special-event liquor licenses for fund-raising events planned by the Carbondale Public Arts Commission on June 5 at the SAW arts center on Buggy Circle; the KDNK Mt. Sopris Music Festival on June 27-28 at Fourth Street Plaza; Cajun Clay Night, June 28 at the Carbondale Clay Center on Main Street; and the “Viva La Woman” celebration by Advocate Safehouse on July 11-12 at the PAC3 space in the Third Street Center.

• Approved, by a vote of 4-2 (trustees Frosty Merriott and A.J. Hobbs dissented, and Trustee Pam Zentmyer did not attend the meeting), amendments to the town’s medical marijuana zoning code, streamlining some of the licensing provisions and establishing a requirement that 30 percent of the electric power used by marijuana medical businesses come from renewable energy sources.

The trustees also called for the planning and zoning commission (P&Z) to consider whether medical and retail marijuana cultivation can take place in the Historic Commercial Core zone district downtown, and particularly whether the cultivation operation of The Center medical marijuana outlet can continue its practice of growing both medical and retail pot at its downtown location.

Carbondale fire district resident asks for recount

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Writer

Carbondale Fire District resident Jeff Wadley has asked for a recount in the May 6 board election, but as of Sopris Sun press time he had not met the payment deadline of noon on May 28, said Designated Election Official Jenny Cutright.

“As a courtesy (to Wadley) we are extending the deadline to noon tomorrow (May 29),” Cutright told The Sopris Sun. Eligible electors in the district can request a recount, Cutright said, but must pay the cost, which she estimated would be $1,325.

In her press release dated May 27, Cutright said Wadley filed his written request for a recount on May 23.

In his request, Wadley said in part that he’s asking for the recount so the district “ … can move on to the real dilemmas of … the district’s future.”

Wadley, plus board candidates Carl Smith and Gary McElwee, have pointed out what they said were irregularities in the ballot-count procedures on election night, including what they said was a delay in posting the results and unattended ballots in the fire station basement after most of the ballots were brought upstairs to Cutright’s office following the count.

There were five candidates running for three seats: incumbents Gene Schilling, Michael Kennedy and Mark Chain, and challengers Smith and McElwee.

The election was one of the few contested races in recent history. Smith received the most votes with 974, followed by Kennedy with 917. Schilling edged Chain for the third seat by five votes (875-870); McElwee received

863 votes. In all, 12 votes separated the three candidates in their race for the third seat.

The election came six months after district voters shot down a mill levy increase ballot measure 2:1, which could have doubled property taxes.

Smith, a former fire district staffer, and

McElwee, a former district volunteer, campaigned together on a platform that included more board transparency and better financial planning.

Cutright told The Sun the election ballots have been kept in the office of Garfield County Clerk and Recorder Jean Alberico

since the election.

If the recount takes place, Cutright will select election judges from a list of people who have gone through the Colorado Special District Association’s training program.

She said the ballots would be counted at the fire station in Carbondale.

The John Fleet swimming pool opened for the season on May 25 but Carbondale Community School students had been getting in shape there since a few days before.

Swimming will be one of three disciplines, including biking and running, that the students will compete in during their triathlon at Sopris Park on May 29.

CPAC unveils Art aRound Town exhibition Walking tour slated for June 5 Sopris Sun Staff Report Beginning with a walking tour with participating artists on June 5 at 5:30 p.m., the Carbondale Public Arts Commission presents the 2014 Art aRound Town sculpture exhibition.

Featuring works by 13 artists from five states, Art aRound Town is a rotating, yearlong public art exhibition showcasing sculptures throughout the town of Carbondale, according to a press release.

This year, 60 artists from16 states submitted sculpture-based works for consideration.

The sculptures within the exhibition include both representational and abstract works chosen by a jury made up of volunteer CPAC board members and town officials.

The Art aRound Town exhibition’s artists are: Fedrico Aguirre (North Las Vegas, Nevada), James Burnes (Santa Fe, New Mexico), Steven Carmer (Fort Collins, Colorado), Mark Cesark (Carbondale, Colorado), Chris Erickson (Glenwood Springs, Colorado), Michael Golins (Missoula, Montana), Siri Hollander (Santa Fe, New Mexico), Jack Kreutzer (Loveland, Colorado), Pavia Justinian (Fruita, Colorado), Gary Mitchell (St Louis, Missouri), Mike Rand (Carbondale, Colorado), Kevin W. Shaffer (Evergreen, Colorado) and Ryan

Shea (Denver, Colorado).

“This year’s Art aRound Town represents the diversity and high quality of work that all have grown to expect from this show,” said CPAC Co-Chair Brad Sherman.

Biographies • Fedrico aguirre: With a 31-year career in engineering, Aguirre’s mechanical background influences his dynamic copper, bronze and steel sculptures, which depict enduring mystical symbols he creates to, as he puts it, “encourage the viewer to embrace a tranquil state of inner peace.” His sculptures may be seen in public venues in Boulder City, Nevada, and Salina, Kansas, as well as in numerous private collections.

• James Burnes: Over the past 14 years, Burnes has been shown in numerous public art exhibitions across the U.S. His work can be found in many public and permanent collections including Park City, Utah and Newburyport, Massachusetts.

• Steven Carmer: Over the years, Carmer’s work has evolved gradually from

the representational to the abstract. He has commissioned pieces in Nebraska, Texas, Colorado, Oregon and Maryland.

• Mark Cesark: Born in Summit, New Jersey, Cesark earned his BFA from Alfred University and a MFA from Massachusetts College of Art. He has exhibited across the nation; his work found in permanent public collections including Red Rocks Community College, Denver; DeCordova Museum, Lincoln, Massachusetts; and the Ross Foundation, East Hampton, New York.

• Chris Erickson: An installation artist working at SAW (Studio for Arts + Works) in Carbondale, his artwork takes a critical look at cultural, social and political issues.

Much of his imagery derives from early skateboard graphics and is fueled by 1980’s punk rock music.

• Michael Golins: His life journey has included working for Colorado Outward Bound School. With no musical background, he enrolled in the University of Montana music school, where he earned a reputation as one of the school’s leading composers and teachers.

• Siri Hollander: Born in 1959 in New York City, Siri Hollander moved to Andalusia, Spain, in 1962. She credits her artistic ability to her parents — from her father, a painter, and her mother, a published writer and poet.

• Pavia Justinian: Her studio is located in the Redlands area of Grand Junction.

She has been creating art since she could grasp a pencil, and it has always been her primary means of both expressing and defining herself.

• Jack Kreutzer: Recently Kreutzer, along with Doug Erion and Doug Rutledge, were selected to install a large sculpture titled “Equinox” at the intersection of Interstate 25 and Colorado Highway 34, to be installed late this summer.

• Gary Mitchell: He learned an aluminum sheet-metal technique from the aerospace industry and is inspired by the notion that the great American statue needs to be made again.

• Mike Rand: His work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. “One also needs to venture beyond the safety of boundaries to see what is really possible within a medium. It’s an uncertain endeavor, which calls up the idea that opposite ends of the spectrum of fantasy/reality can exist at a single time within the piece.”

• Kevin W. Shaffer: Born and raised in a Mid-Western landscape, the ever-present prairie inspired him to study architecture, land planning, landscape architecture, horticulture and sculpture. His work seeks a minimalist approach.

• Ryan Shea: A self-taught artist who works predominantly in the medium of metal and mixed media sculpture, Shea is a displaying artist at the Denver Art Society and the Santa Fe street art district.

Bringing home some trophies. That’s what Roaring Fork High School students did following the May 17 Solar Roller races at Glenwood Springs High School. Send your scuttlebutt to news@SoprisSun.com. pris Sunner who answered the phone and talked to Isabella immediately thought “Cadillac Ranch” (located on I-40 near Amarillo, Texas), although she did not mention or even allude to that world-famous piece of public art. “What we’re looking for is a monumental piece of public sculpture,” is more or less what she said. “This would be a valuable and timeless piece of sculpture … a gift to the town … a generous gift from Brad Hendricks’ heirs.” Possible sites might include any of the roundabouts that CDOT has or might build on Highway 133, or near Colorado Rocky Mountain School. “A lot of people are going to love this idea,” she concluded, then added “Interested blow torch artists or property owners should ask around if they’d like to become involved in this worthwhile and epic public art project.”

Sunset inks Carbondale The June issue of Sunset magazine spreads some pretty good ink on Carbondale. Sunset focuses on the west and features good ol’ Bonedale on pages 24-25 in its travel section. The sub-headline reads “Inventive chefs and artists lend flair to a low-key ranching town that mirrors Aspen’s good looks – without the sticker shock.”

The article leads off with the arty side of town, mentioning Roadside Gallery and photographer Martin Garfinkel, plus Art 215 and SAW. Then it’s on to Mark Fischer’s Town. restaurant. Linda Romero Criswell is quoted in a blurb about the community oven at the Third Street Center. The article describes the business park on Dolores Way as the town’s “warehouse district” and singles out Osmia Organics and Sarah Villafranco for her high-end bath and body products, and also Lea Tyler for her Tylerware. Next up is the Carbondale Community Food Cooperative, which writer Kelly Bastone describes as a “corner grocery store” specializing in locally sourced fruits, veggies, cheeses and meats.” The article wraps up by directing readers to Avalanche Ranch and its hot springs.

Wanted: blow-torch artists The following might be a confirmed rumor so feel free to spread it around. A well-placed, long-time, in-the-know woman known to some as “Isabella” called The Sopris Sun on the telephone this week and said

In particular is a 1930s era yellow vehicle that exposes its rear-end to passersby from under a tattered tarp on County Road 106, two or three stone tosses from the former Pink Bridge over the Roaring Fork River. Family learning to live with Williams Syndrome John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent As so musically described in the 1960 song by Billy Bland, “Let The Little Girl Dance,” some girls just can’t help but give in to the rhythm of the moment and dance their way through any social event they attend.

And 13-year-old Ella Munk, who was diagnosed a decade ago with the geneticallycaused developmental disability known as Williams Syndrome (WS), is one such girl.

Born in her bedroom at her Missouri Heights home, to parents Dave and Stephanie Munk, Ella has become a fixture at a wide range of local events and celebrations, sashaying her way across stages and dance floors either alone or with a group.

Most recently, she was one of dozens of dancing children who took over the flatbed stage following the lulubelle fashion show during May’s First Friday party in Carbondale.

“Ella’s got the rhythm,” declared Stephanie during a recent interview, meaning her daughter loves to dance, one of the better-known attributes associated with WS. Other attributes include “striking verbal abilities, highly social personalities and an affinity for music,” according to the website (www.williamsStephanie Munk syndrome.org) of the Williams Syndrome Association (WSA).

Ella exhibits those attributes as well, her parents say, though she has some difficulty interacting with kids at school and in traditional social settings.

On a more somber note, according to the WSA website, there are other effects from the disorder, including cardiovascular disease and learning disabilities.

May has been named Williams Syndrome Awareness Month, part of a five-year effort to bring greater awareness and understanding of the issue, and raise money for the Williams Syndrome Association.

The effort this year has included 14 Williams Awareness Walks around the United States, and announcements about the issues involved on the “big screen” hanging above Times Square in New York City. A Colorado walk is scheduled for June 7 at Utah Park in Aurora, a suburb of Denver.

According to Stephanie, 50, she and Dave, who is 55, were unaware of Ella’s disability until she was three years old, despite her tardiness in learning to walk and talk.

Their lack of understanding, Stephanie said, was largely because they were first-time parents who simply doted on their child and presumed she would grow out of these early

In keeping with The Sopris Sun’s commitment to support our community’s youth, The Sun is offering two paid internships this summer. Yazmin Castillo, currently a Roaring Fork High School junior, and Jimmy Serrano, RFHS sophomore, were selected from a pool of extremely qualified high school students to work as The Sun’s 2014 summer interns.

Castillo and Serrano will be assigned projects they can complete this summer with weekly supervision and support from Sopris Sun board and staff members. Such projects may include reporting, writing, photography, graphic design, working with social media and other website-focused activities. While these students will gain experience in both print and online journalism, they will also be enriching the youth-focused content in The Sun and at www.soprissun.com.

Funds for the summer internship program were donated by the Aspen Thrift Shop.

yazmin Castillo Yazmin said she is passionate about many things, including her family, church, art and community: the community of her peers at RFHS as well as the greater Carbondale community. She is an active member of the high school’s RAM Unidos group, which organizes events and all-school meetings with the goal of building a stronger and more unified high school community.

This spring Castillo combined her strong artistic talents with her focus on community as she has been a leader in the creation of a mural at RFHS honoring her beloved teacher Ivone Muñoz who passed away this past December. Castillo describes herself as a quiet person who likes to help people. She has been mentoring younger students at Carbondale Middle School since she was in seventh grade and she also tutors ninth grade students at RFHS who are struggling with math.

Castillo has been a part of the Carbondale community her entire life. At dawn on Potato Day, you’ll find her helping her dad get the meat and potatoes into the pit to start cooking (something he has been doing Yazmin’s entire life). Maybe she’ll write about it for us this year.

Summer will also include two weeks of classes, including calculus and astronomy, at the University of Colorado-Boulder in conjunction with the Pre-Collegiate Program.

We are excited to bring her fresh voice and community spirit to the paper and to you, our readers.

Jimmy Serrano Jimmy is a student who is eager to take on new and difficult challenges. Currently, he is working with a group of students who are designing a 3D printer, just for the fun of it.

As an eighth grader, Jimmy decided to teach himself computer coding and graphic design. He embarked on a project to create a new logo and website for his father’s company, Serrano’s Marble and Granite in Glenwood Springs. You can see Jimmy’s impressive work at serranosmarbleandgranit.com. Helping manage and expand The Sun’s website is one of the many things he’ll be doing during his internship this summer.

Jimmy has lived in Carbondale his entire life. His family has had a booth at Mountain Fair for several years, selling Mexican and Salvadoran fare. He may bring us an insider’s view when the fair rolls around this year.

In June Jimmy will be attending a three-week session at Colorado School of Mines to study math and the sciences as part of his involvement in the school district’s Pre-Collegiate Program. Jimmy also has a deep passion for writing and is eager to hone his writing skills while working at The Sopris Sun. We look forward to seeing what surprises lie in store with Jimmy on board.

Closer to home, Mr. Hendricks was an early supporter of the Carbondale Council on the Arts and Humanities and the Mountain Fair; he was a founding father of KDNK public radio; he helped create the Carbondale Slo-Pitch softball league; and he served a decade as a member of the Carbondale Volunteer Fire Department.

After years of offering unsolicited advice to the Carbondale Board of Trustees, he was elected to several terms on the town council in the 1990s.

Hoping to continue his political career on a higher level, Mr. Hendricks was the Democratic Partyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nominee in 1998 for a seat on the GarďŹ eld County Commission and ran on the campaign slogan â&#x20AC;&#x153;Good Enough For Government Work.â&#x20AC;?

Voters disagreed.

He was defeated in the general election by an opponent whom Mr. Hendricks once characterized as â&#x20AC;&#x153;The perfect Republican noun: he has weight and takes up space.â&#x20AC;?

His many hobbies included: 1. Not-quite repairing decrepit motor vehicles; 2. Questioning the moral ďŹ ber of Colorado State Patrol ofďŹ cers who cruised Highway 13 between Craig and Meeker; 3. Buying and wearing Baroque used

Anyway â&#x20AC;Ś hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bradâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s original campaign slogan for GarďŹ eld County Commissioner: I believe everyone in GarďŹ eld County should voluntarily submit a DNA sample and then have these samples shipped to the DeCartes Rocket Company of Marseille, France. Currently active in the European Unionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s efforts to develop a space program, Mr. DeCartesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; rocket company would load the samples into a capsule and shoot them into outer space from the European Space Agencyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s launching facility in Kourou, French Guiana, down there in South America.

You know, Guiana was the penal colony where Captain Dreyfuss was imprisoned by French anti-Semites?

Why am I even asking if you know that? I know you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know that. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s OK. Anyway, where was I? Oh, yeah.....

So we shoot our DNA into outer space at a cost of $1,000 per sample â&#x20AC;Ś the fees to be borne by the oil and gas companies currently raping the western part of GarďŹ eld County â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and who will soon be raping the eastern half â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and reaping enormous proďŹ ts as a result.

By the way, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll also tax these companies and use the land-rape funds to pay for roads, bridges and human services.

Anyway, at some point in time, these DNA samples will be retrieved by aliens with technology far advanced from ours â&#x20AC;Ś and they will re-animate our cells â&#x20AC;Ś And â&#x20AC;Ś We will all be together again. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All be together again.â&#x20AC;? Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a bumper sticker and besides, the campaign is over and my friend is gone, goddammit, gone.

Friends and family of Brad Hendricks were mightily saddened last week with the sudden passing of the long-time Carbondale resident, who died May 22, 2014, from an apparent heart attack. The former town councilman and well-known raconteur was 72.

Born on Dec. 16, 1941, in Los Angeles, California, Mr. Hendricks was the middle child of George and Louise Hendricks and attended public schools in Glendale, California. He later graduated from Arizona State University in Tempe with a degree in mechanical engineering.

After college, his ďŹ rst (and last) steady job was with the energy technology giant Schlumberger, for whom he worked as a production logger and trouble shooter in the oil and gas ďŹ elds of eastern Utah and northwest Colorado. It was during his time with Schlumberger in the early 1960s that he met and later married, Jane Jochems, who was teaching Classical Languages at Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale.

The young couple quit their jobs, booked passage on a freighter out of Long Beach, California and spent a year or so traveling in the western PaciďŹ c, most notably Australia and New Zealand as well as the varied islands of Indonesia.

It was among the ďŹ rst of his many adventures in foreign lands. But not the last.

By the end of his life he had journeyed through most of the countries in Asia, the Near East, Western Europe and the Americas. Sometimes traveling alone, sometimes with his wife and, later, his three daughters, Mr. Hendricks was an excellent storyteller and his friends always enjoyed sharing the journey with him upon his homecoming.

Settling down in Carbondale in 1970, Mr. Hendricks pursued a variety of parttime occupations: he crafted doll houses for the Aspen market; prospected for uranium in the California Sierras and gold in Mexico; helped refurbish a deserted seafood processing plant in the Aleutian Islands; and pursued the trade for which he was probably best known: building custom log homes. His special love, however, was working as a seasonal guide and outďŹ tter

clothing; 4. Screwing with McDonaldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Corporation employees by refusing to eat the top half of the sesame seed bun on a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Big Mac,â&#x20AC;? insisting they instead be constructed with the non-sesame seed bottom halves; 5. Assembling the largest collection of Spade Cooley albums on the Western Slope (â&#x20AC;&#x153;Spade,â&#x20AC;? of course, being the wellknown band leader from the Texas Swing era whose brilliant musical career was cut tragically short when he was convicted of murdering his wife with a ballpeen hammer because she preferred the music of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys).

Mr. Hendricksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; other interests included critical thinking, playing the devilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advocate and not suffering fools.

The great loves of his life were his daughters.

Per his request, his remains are to be cremated and his ashes scattered along that portion of County Road 106 that passes through CRMS. Mr. Hendricks was preceded in death by his father, George Hendricks of Carlsbad, California. Survivors include his mother, Louise Hendricks of Carlsbad; his sister Ann (Hendricks) Woolcott of Portland, Oregon; and his brother Newell Hendricks of Boston, Massachusetts. He is further survived by his daughter Harmony Hendricks and son-in-law Ed Sigel of Centennial, Wyoming; daughter Hilary (Hendricks) Preston and son-in-law Gabe Preston of Durango, Colorado; and daughter Heidi Hendricks and son-in-law Todd Mathis, also of Durango. He is also survived by his wife, Jane Hendricks and her co-husband, Pat Noel, of Collbran, Colorado. Other survivors include his grandchildren: Moxie, Gus, Jack, George, Max and Penelope, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and a slew of good and true friends.

In memoreum, the family will host a gathering of the clan on Saturday, June 14 beginning at 1 p.m. at the Hendricks compound in Satank. In lieu of ďŹ&#x201A;owers, stories are requested.

Terri Natal passed Hessner away after a long and courageous fight against cancer. She is survived by her husband Bob Hessner and son John; parents August and Donna Natal; brothers Daniel (Cecilia) and Robert (Gael); niece Tammra; grandmother Emma Natal; m o t h e r- i n - l a w Lenore Hessner; b r o t h e r- i n - l a w Tony (Laura); and many family members and friends.

She spent many years dedicated to educating young children and was loved by all her students. She will be greatly missed but her legacy will live on through her students.

developmental difficulties When Ella’s developmental delays lead to a diagnosis of WS, Dave said, “We felt an onrush of emotion, where you feel like your dreams and hopes and expectations for your wonderful child have been taken away.”

They quickly learned that Ella is one of a very few people in this region with the syndrome, and that they essentially would be on their own in their determination to learn all they could of the syndrome and, in Dave’s words, “To help her get the best, the most out of her life.”

Dave compared the family's dynamic to a parable, “A Trip To Holland,” written in 1987 by Emily Perl Kingsley, whose son has Down Syndrome, another developmental disability.

In the parable, Kingsley writes that having a baby is “like planning a fabulous vacation trip to Italy,” with its promise of new and startling experiences.

But the trip, in her story, is sidelined by circumstances (a metaphor for a diagnosis of developmental difficulties), and the family suddenly discovers that they have traveled to Holland. There, they discover, life is “slower paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy,” but has its own special attractions and atmosphere.

And learning about this new destination, in Kingsley's story, offers a different but equally rewarding and warming set of challenges, tasks and joys.

The lesson, she writes, is this: “If you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn’t get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things about Holland.”

So the Munks hooked up with the WSA and started learning about the new world in which they had arrived. They enrolled Ella in regular classes at Ross Montessori School and, later, at Carbondale’s public schools, while taking advantage of periodic conferences held by the WSA and sending Ella to “camps” where she could play, dance and develop alongside other children with what are known as “special needs.”

Along the way, they met and became fast friends with Robin Pegg, 46, a former teacher from Michigan who now works as an educational consultant for WSA, is director of the camps that Ella and her parents go to, and who for the past four years or so has worked closely with the Munk family.

“For me, it was life-changing,” said Stephanie, referring to the conferences and the camps, where she met and talked with parents and children dealing with Williams Syndrome in an environment that was safe and encouraging for her and Dave as well as for Ella.

“All of a sudden, I felt like I had found her place,” Stephanie said, noting that there is no WA support group in the Roaring Fork Valley region. “It’s called Music Therapy Camp, but I was, like, it’s Mom Therapy Camp, too.”

And so it is, Dave said, that the family is optimistically working through all its challenges, Ella is a cheerful and outgoing teenager, and the future appears bright.

“So, we were finally able to get to Holland,” Dave said with a smile.

Youth football om page 2 our children in a bubble and protect them all. I have played many contact sports for most of my life and I know there will probably be a price to pay at some stage. Not yet. Would I give up my friendships from playing football? Never. From playing rugby? No way. Do I miss the adrenaline and endorphin kicks I used to get from being involved in contact? Yes. And yes again. It is a part of our human DNA. Football doesn’t have any more inherent risk than anything else. The rewards are great. I have always said as a coach I want to have friendships with the young men I coached when they are in the 30’s and 40’s and for them to say they enjoyed their time playing football. I have watched the bonds of friendship stand the test of time. The stories they tell are worth every minute we spent on the field practicing and working as hard as they did. Did they have some bruises and sprains along the way? Most likely.

Concussions are something many of who have participated in sports have played through in the past, and a 99 percent of us are just fine without long term brain injuries; 99 percent of us didn’t play professional football where the contact adds up and adds up. In today’s world, we are more informed to work through protocols and use more informed judgment to keep our children more protected from long term injury than ever before.

Our equipment, with the help of the school district, is the best we can buy.

Never has there been more done to protect our young athletes. Will it eliminate all of the risk? No. I wish it did, but it won’t. But then again, I have seen more young men injured playing other sports other than football in this valley. So if fear of injury is stopping you from playing football, don’t let it.

In conclusion In conclusion, I have been coaching football in Carbondale since 1998.

We have had some success during this time and we hope to have success again. Concussions are a part of athletics from basketball to skiing to soccer to baseball. Don’t let the fear of injury keep your son from playing football. We need support at the youth levels to keep football alive and well. Get involved, you will be rewarded, as I have been for the past 17 years in Carbondale, not all of them at the high school level. I helped to restart the Pee Wee program and enjoyed those years as much as any at the high school level.

Is football dying? Not in Carbondale, if people decide to get involved, live without fear and help keep the programs going.

Clearing the confusion Dear Editor: To clear up any confusion I asked for a recount of the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District board members election of May 14.

Five votes separate two candidates and 12 votes separate three candidates.

My interest is an attempt to minimize time spent on less than desirable distractions that were created by perceptions of procedures and now all the following discussions that are aside from issues of paramount importance.

During the next two meetings the very future of your fire district will be discussed by the community advisory committee put together by the fire district board.

We need a concentrated community effort working for the salvage of essential emergency services for our communities. None of us are as smart as all of us.

Fire district comments Dear Editor: The right to vote in our country is a fundamental right and an election should be conducted in a manner that is beyond reproach. Voters should feel confident that the governing bodies holding elections preserve the integrity of the process. Based on the article in last week’s Sopris Sun, the fire district did not take this responsibil-

ity seriously. I offer the following comments: • If the district wasn’t sure how to hold the election correctly, they should have held that meeting well before the election not on election night.

• Not preserving the security of the ballot box is a serious breach. Although Leach “kicked out” non-judges from the designated election official’s (DEO) office, he should have secured her office in advance to make sure the ballot box didn’t have the potential of being compromised.

• Gene Schilling, a candidate, should not be making any comments regarding the election. He should have deferred to the designated election official or Eric Gross, the district’s attorney.

• If Carl Smith’s allegations are correct, the fire district made multiple errors in conducting the election including but not limited to: not posting the results immediately, ballots unattended for 20 -30 minutes, and staff learning of the election results in advance of the public. These errors could be grounds for challenging the election results.

• Ron Leach misses the point when he defends the DEO’s integrity. The issue is whether or not the election was conducted properly according to the special election law statute not the DEO’s integrity.

If the handling of this election is any indication, I’m not confident that Ron Leach and the re-elected incumbents can manage the district in a responsible and effective manner.

Make it a summer of fun at Wyly Community Art Center Sopris Sun Staff Report Summer art camps begin in June and run for six straight weeks at the Wyly Community Art Center in downtown Basalt.

The Wyly’s June exhibition is dedicated to its Young Women’s Studio Mentorship program; this year’s mentee is Basalt High School student Michelle Lehman, according to a press release.

Chalk art returns to the Wyly on June 14 when children and adults can compete for fabulous prizes in Wheels, Wheels, Wheels. Also, during June adults can choose from programs exploring the encaustic processes.

Encaustic painting — also known as hot wax painting — involves the use of heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The oldest surviving encaustic paintings are Romano-Egyptian from 100 BC. This subtle and beautiful art form was rediscovered by artists in the 20th century and continues to gain popularity.

Internationally acclaimed artist Timothy McDowell will share his knowledge and experience at a free art talk at 5:30 p.m. on June 4. From June 4-6, McDowell will teach an encaustic class. Students will learn how to prepare, expose and tone cyanotype images (primitive photographic process) on paper, and then will mount those images to wooden panels for further manipulation with distemper and beeswax layers.

Shawna Moore will return to The Wyly on June 21 – 22 with a wax and paper workshop, a differing approach to the technique of encaustic. Paper will be the focus of this class — it will be altered by printing and rusting processes, then glued to panels or arranged in sculptural forms.

Kids camps Make your plans now for a summer full of art, fun and learning.

In the Lemonade Stand Building workshop that runs June 9 – 13, children will be led by an art, design, business and marketing team to create summer lemonade stands for Lemonade Day. This class will be taught by Guinevere Jones, with help from Kelly Alford.

Next, The lines will be blurred between junk and art as children discover found objects and re-create, re-design and re-invent them into original sculptures in Sculpture is Easy with visiting artist Bill Gruenberg from June 16 – 19.

The Wyly partners again this year with the Aspen Writer’s Foundation for the Art of Books and Words from June 23 – 27.

By the end of Printmaking: Art, T-shirts & More on June 30 through July 2 with Penny Greenwell, students will know how to print their own greeting cards, shopping bags, place mats, tee shirts and other works of art.

In sCREATURES: Art & Nature from July 7-10, children will invent a creature, make it out of paper maiché, design its habitat and describe its behaviors in their own sCREATURE journal.

From July 14 – 17, children and adults of all ages can translate their favorite song into a piece of art using an actual guitar as a canvas in Guitars: Painted, Collaged & Sculpted.

Letters continued om page 17 Four-lane 133 Dear Editor: My purpose in writing today is two fold.

First, many thanks to the organizers and workers on the Crystal River riparian trail widening and bank stabilization. What was a dangerous stretch of the trail is now a safe and pleasant walk.

Second, I attended the informational meeting given by CDOT earlier this month. I was surprised to learn the plans for widening Highway 133 were only for a three lane, not a four lane highway. I asked the representative why this was, and he said that the highway department did want to four lane it, but that “Carbondale” only wanted it to be three lanes. With the expense entailed in re-aligning, it certainly seems to me this would be the time to four lane this busy stretch of highway to adequately handle the traffic volume.

We’re confused Dear Editor: We’re confused. Was there a town meeting to present other examples of sculptures

for the roundabout that we missed? Or was the James Surls piece arbitrarily chosen without a public discussion?

We live in Carbondale and as citizens, we feel the townspeople should have some input into what is or was chosen. Again, was there a meeting that we missed?

Thanks for the article Dear Editor: I love the article regarding Bonnie Fischer.

I think it would be very fitting to have a park here in Carbondale named after her. I worked as a secretary in Carbondale Elementary School with Bonnie Fischer when she first started teaching and for 21 years after that.

Bonnie never lacked for ideas for putting together all of the activities that she thought were as important as teaching every day subjects in the classroom. I was also one of the Mid-Continent Fossils. Bonnie and Jack had Steve, but then they added Van and Joo Hee. Bonnie had her family complete.

Carbondale rocks Dear Editor: We are so lucky to have this awesome and diverse community in our valley. Carbondale’s First Fridays are not to be missed. This month, Main Street was closed; lulubelle’s fashion show was set out in the street and many of the very unique shops were open for

business. Delicious food was offered out in the street and in places like the Pour House serving their notable favorites. At the other end of the street, the art deco Crystal Theater offered the uniquely quirky “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” Live music surrounded the crowds of folks enjoying all that was offered.

All manner of people filled the street: little kids, seniors, friends catching up with friends and new faces reveling in the “hippy” spectacle — the true ambiance found in the town of Carbondale.

Not to be missed at the far end of town just before the railroad tracks, the Carbondale Clay Center introduced Kendra Sparks.

She is one of the wonderful residents who have chosen CCC as a stepping-stone into the national ceramic community. Her humorously creative mind invites the viewer into “start-to-finish” amusement and marvel. This is a must see and will be available to the public until next month’s First Friday on June 6.

Carbondale is a treasure not to be missed.

Bonnie never has missed a Potato Day parade. She has never missed honoring Veterans Day, Cinco de Mayo and her classroom has always had something extra going on for years. I guess what impressed me the most, that had nothing to do with a classroom, was her ability to get up in front of so many friends, relatives, students, teachers and Carbondale alumni and pay a huge tribute to her beloved Jack at his memorial. I could never have done that with honor and dignity. I would have fallen apart.

So yes, yes. Let’s name the park after Bonnie Fischer.
