Bring on round-about Dear Editor: I have personally seen and experienced many changes in our community. One thing is for certain — change is inevitable. One of the changes that I find exciting is Carbondale’s addition of the round-about at Highway 133 and Main. It will bring an esthetically pleasing and well-constructed way of moving traffic through a very busy intersection. With the outstanding James Surls sculpture as the focal point, it will be truly amazing.

Being born and raised in Carbondale on a cattle ranch, I hold dear so many memories of Carbondale. I loved my families’ early morning cattle drives through town and our two-day cattle drives moving cows from our ranch on Highway 133 up Highway 82 to our cow-camp at old Snowmass. I loved competing in Carbondale rodeos and watching my dad and my sister compete in roping events.

Branding day meant lots of work. It was very busy and full of activity, as well as smoke, fire, and rocky mountain oysters. I love and cherish each and every memory in my heart.

Today, we have many different lifestyles and many examples of an energetic and active community that celebrates our history and embraces artistic influence. It is with great anticipation that I look forward to the James Surls sculpture taking its place in the center of our round-about.

Surls uses nature as the source of his inspiration and we have such an abundant supply of beauty and nature in this valley. Surls feels that the vase in the sculpture is a metaphoric representation of the female, which coincidentally is very closely connected to the Ute Indian belief about Mount

Sopris. The Ute Indians loved this valley and called it their home. According to Ute Indian historians, they referred to Mount Sopris as “Mother Mountain.” For many of us, Mount Sopris is a major focal point in our lives. This sculpture as well can be a focal point in our community and a treasure for years to come.

I close with a quote from James Surls: “It is my wish that Carbondale will grow to appreciate the significant meaning of the symbolism represented in this sculpture. It is from the heart of our family that we do our part in this gift to the town of Carbondale.”

Let’s be different Dear Editor: I can hardly wait for this proposed round-about. Let’s see, we don’t live far from Aspen, so we need an extravagant roundabout that features some type of sculpture in the middle that contains what?

I am like one other person that commented. Why does the sculpture have to represent every living thing here in the world?

That is not Carbondale. I also look at some of the sculptures here on the streets. I don’t understand half of them and frankly I don’t really want to. I also feel like if you have to stop and stare at something for more than five minutes to understand what it is, or if you have to have a written sign to understand it, then it’s not really something that everybody can enjoy within the allotted time that you are on the round-about.

I think a lump of coal, picture of an American flag, a farm tractor or digging spuds would be far more appropriate. Something that is pleasant to the eye, something

recognizable within a second or two. Why do we have to make things so complicated?

Let’s not just decide that we need something like would be found in Aspen. Let’s be “simply” different.

CCS thanks Dear Editor: Carbondale Community School (CCS) would like to thank local businesses of Carbondale for supporting our Trashathon.

Third and fourth graders at CCS do the Trash-A-Thon for Earth Day. We clean up trash so we can set an example and to raise money for our trip to the Colorado National Monument in May. We went to local business to ask for pledges. One group of Spanish speaking students went to Latino businesses. We want to especially thank El Señor Taco Show, Mi Casita, Teresa’s Market, El Horizonte, El Pollo Rico, Valley Meats Carnecería, La Tortelleria, La Roca and Garcia’s Market.

We picked up 47 bags of trash for our school and community. We picked up trash on the Rio Grande trail, sidewalks, parks and downtown. A quote from fellow student from CCS Mason Smith said, “Trashathon was fun ‘cause my group found lots of neat trash, like tennis balls, and footballs.” Another student, Quinn Rooney, said, “It’s fun to spend time with my friends while cleaning the environment.” Trashathon was fun for my class and me.

Honoring Bonnie Fischer: a park, lots of memories ditional crafts, foods, games and dances to the students; it was a cultural experience that culminated in a costumed pow wow for all.

“I felt strongly about bringing the community into the classroom, so I had doctors, firemen, and ranchers interacting with students,” Fischer told The Sun. Listening to each other’s hearts with stethoscopes, climbing onto a ladder truck and trying rope tricks were all part of the fun for her students. In 1976, while Bonnie was teaching kindergarten, students made a quilt as part of their bicentennial lesson. Thirteen years later, Bonnie presented the quilt to one of those same students at that class’ high school graduation.

She has worked under eight principals and five superintendents and has taught three generations (some in the same families). The work ethic that Bonnie claims she got from her dad is fueled by her passionate sense of community and her love of Carbondale. When Mountain Fair started, she took the lead in the kids’ area with games and activities. She always led a faction of second grade students, sometimes known as the “Fischer Taters,” in the Potato Day parade, in order to instill in them a sense of community pride. And after all of this time, she says that, “The feel of the community is the same as it was when I started.”

Anyone who has had a child walk through the doors of Carbondale Elementary School or Crystal River Elementary School, viewed a Potato Day parade or advocated for educational advances in our public schools in the last 44 years has been infectiously touched by Fischer’s enthusiasm for children, community and education.

The 2.5 acre land parcel in question consists of the old Carbondale Elementary School playground, which is now adjacent to the backside of the Third Street Center and houses the community bread oven and gardens. Eventually, according to Cammack, a new playground will be built there as well.

Town staff originally named the area, “The Third Street Center Community Partnership Park,” noting its acquisition from a school district-town land swap and open space fulfillment. Other sides While we associate Bonnie with projects and parades, there are other sides to this vibrant woman that few know about. She was one of the “Mid-Continent Fossils,” a women’s soccer team, in 1975. Once again she was ahead of her time, along with her teammate Carol Craven, as no other women’s league existed.

She married her high school sweetheart, Jack Fischer, who was a soldier, and they had three children.

Her firstborn is Steve, who came into this world while Jack was stationed in Viet Nam. While there, Jack witnessed the heartbreaking abundance of war orphans, and as Saigon fell, they agreed to adopt one of the “airlift babies.” “In the first photo I saw of Van, he had a number across his chest, like a prisoner. He was 19 months old when he arrived and couldn’t walk or talk. He was so malnourished that we had to give him iron shots for a year.” Sometime later, they decided to adopt a Korean baby girl; to their surprise, 8 yearold, Joo Hee, walked off the plane. As their family gelled, all three of Bonnie and Jack’s children attended the Carbondale school where Bonnie taught, and now some of her grandchildren are there as well. When Jack passed away several years back, Bonnie’s students planted a tree outside the Crystal River Elementary School library is his honor.

Now Her job now is one she loves; as the elementary school librarian and computer teacher, she is “surrounded by books and computers, so it’s perfect.” She gave up all the critters, except the birds, who she claims “love to be read to.” In her reflection during this interview, Bonnie claims BONNIE FISCHER page 9

TUESDay May 6 at 11:51 a.m. an officer contacted a transient who was panhandling at Highway 133 and Main Street, gave him a warning and told him to move on.

TUESDay May 6 at 5:54 p.m. an officer responded to a call from a resident who said unknown persons had been leaving large items such as TVs and furniture in her driveway while she was at work. She requested an extra patrol in her neighborhood.

THURSDay May 8 at 3:46 p.m., police received a report of a disturbance at a store. An officer learned that a customer left his wallet on the counter after paying for merchandise, and the following customer took off with it. Customer #1 chased customer #2, retrieved the wallet, then returned to the store and accused them of aiding the theft. When the officer arrived customer #1 had left the store.

Volunteers muscle a snow crabapple tree into a freshly dug hole at the Third Street Center on May 17. The Carbondale Tree Board planted four snow crabs and four Discovery elms on the south and west side of the TSC, with memorial plaques to be attached later. The donors were: Laura Kirk/DHM, Jay Walker Lodge, Joan Matranga, Gavin Brooke, Katherine Rich, Debbie Bruell, Kim Bock/Prima Plant Services, Mark Taylor, Barbara Dills, Udelle Stucky and Elizabeth Camack. Matching funds came from the Kay Brunnier Fund. The snow crabs extend an inner ring of trees that form a tight circle around the TSC building. The elms were placed west of the TSC along the eight-foot path that skirts the property. Discovery elms are a hybrid, according to websites, that are more resistant to Dutch elm disease and elm leaf beetle than American elms that were popular in the early part of the 20th century before being decimated in some parts of the country due to those two diseases. The Discovery elm’s mature height is 4550 feet and the spread is 40-50 feet. The tree is generally planted for its shade. Photo by Lynn Burton

Zoning code process ramps up on May 29 UDC outline available online, at town hall and library

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Report At the May 29 Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, the public gets its ďŹ rst, and possibly last, look at a uniďŹ ed development code outline that among other things: • Says the town should consider eliminating eight of its 28 current zone districts; • Recommends the new code to “create residential uses that allow a wider range of housing types;â€? • Consider the increasing the number of districts where ADUs (accessory dwelling units) are allowed; • Allow for detached ADUs in residential zone districts; • Allow for modular construction “where appropriate;â€? • Allow accessory structures related to local food production like “hoop houses, green houses or coopsâ€? in residential districts as a useby-right if clear standards are met. • Write the UDC not only to accommodate, but also to encourage, innovative and creative projects that respond to the Comprehensive Plan, rather – Teka Israel than restricting or prohibiting such projects. • Update the development standards to clearly articulate the expected quality of development rather than negotiating over quality issues with each PUD application.

In total, the UDC outline lists 73 recommendations found on pages 3-6 of the 65 page document, prepared by Clarion Association, which the town hired in 2013 to help it draft a new zoning code (UDC).

Public comment will be taken at the May 29 P&Z meeting; the deadline to comment via e-mail or in written form is June 6, according to a memo from planning assistant Teka Israel.

Israel said the UDC will be based on the town’s new comprehensive plan, which the trustees approved in 2013.

She said the trustees expect to approve the UDC later this year after numerous public hearings.

Israel’s memo also states: “The purpose of the outline is to allow staff, elected and appointed ofďŹ cials, and the public the opportunity to review the overall structure of the proposed (code) revisions before the actual (UDC) drafting begins.â€?

In its UDC outline introduction, Clarion states the 2010 U.S. Census put Carbondale’s population at 6,427 and that projections call for an additional 3,600 people by 2032.

Among other objectives, the UDC will “incorporate environmental sustainability provisions throughout the code.�

The UDC process also calls for looking closely at maintaining or improving Carbondale’s: • Compact community form; • Maintenance of air and water quality; • Promotion of alternative energy and reduction of waste; • Diversity and affordability of housing stock; • Multimodal transportation choice; • Greater economic self-sufďŹ ciency; and

• Fiscal responsibility.

The UDC outline is divided into four parts titled: Introduction, Key Themes, Annotated Outline of a UniďŹ ed Development Code and Detailed Review of Current Development Regulations.

Next steps

The P&Z holds a public meeting to discuss the proposed UDC outline at town hall at 7 p.m. on May 29.

The outline is available at town hall, the Carbondale Branch Library and at www.carbondaleudc.com. Comments can also be submitted to tisrael@carbondaleco.net. The deadline is June 6.

Looking for a hearing aid Deb Lawson reports she recently lost a hearing aid on the Rio Grande Trail between the Catherine Store bridge and the porta-potty at the El Jebel intersection. The hearing aid is about one inch long, almond shaped, and gray and sliver colored. “In other words, exactly the color of the pavement and every rock alongside it,” Lawson told The Sun. Triathletes meet

Heading to africa A trio of Roaring Fork High school students will have an extra item to add to their “what I did last summer” essays when they return to school next fall. Grace Brown, Max Slack and Erin Doherty have been invited to visit northeast Kenya this summer, thanks to the McBride Lewa internship program.

Along with eight other Roaring Fork Valley students, the group will camp on the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (which, if you’re wondering, comes equipped with guards). Aaron and Molly Garland will be the adult leaders. The internships are made possible in part through donations; students themselves pay $2,000 each.

Tam said she believes that learning how to benefit from diversity in an increasingly more diverse and global world is both a challenge and an opportunity.

Tam is a speaker, author, consultant, board certified executive/corporate/leadership coach, and founder and executive director of the Us Foundation. She was formerly the CEO of Aveda Corp., president of Reebok Apparel and Retail Group, vice president of Nike Inc., and also an entrepreneur who has developed and built four companies.

Joining Tam will be her friend and world-renowned cellist Michael Fitzpatrick. Dr. Debra Winston will be moderating.

Originally set up under TRTC’s non-profit 501c3 status, the RFCC has become a TRTC program.

“Jim Calaway’s desire to bring the two organizations together was primarily so the RFCC could provide more diversity in its offerings,” said a TRTC spokesman. “He will continue to invite three to four illustrious speakers a year in all areas of world affairs.”

Alpine Bank joins CEC Sopris Sun Staff Report Alpine Bank announced it has bought solar panels from Clean Energy Collective for its community solar garden system in the Holy Cross Energy and San Miguel Power Association service areas, according to a press release, and has plans to buy panels in the Yampa Valley Electric Association service area this summer.

At a total investment of roughly $700,000, Alpine Bank’s purchase included the final 534 panels of the second community-owned solar array in Holy Cross Energy’s service territory, at the Rifle Community Solar Farm. Holy Cross Energy is now planning for a third facility to satisfy continued demand for community solar in western Colorado.

The bank’s 534 solar panels are anticipated to produce 208,302 kWh of electricity in the first year, representing 37 percent of all electricity Alpine Bank purchases from Holy Cross Energy. The internal rate of return for the first 20 years of ownership in the Rifle Community Solar Farm is projected to be 12 percent.

“CEC began in Basalt and established the first community-owned solar garden in the country in 2010 near El Jebel, Colorado. Alpine Bank was founded in Carbondale more than 40 years ago and Alpine Bank’s Green Team was birthed in Snowmass Village in 2003. Fire board ‘no comments’ allegations of election mistakes

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Writer The Carbondale Fire Board pretty much issued a collective “no comment” to allegations of election mistakes during its monthly meeting on May 14.

The allegations were brought by newly elected board member Carl Smith in what he told the five member board was an “after action review,” which he explained is a process the district itself uses following an incident its staff or volunteers have responded to.

As of May 21, Smith had not been sworn in as a Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District board member. At the May 14 meeting, he said the actions of Designated Election Official Jenny Cutright on election night raised questions in his mind as well as others. “There was a perception from a number of people of ‘what’s going on?’” said Smith.

When contacted by The Sopris Sun for this story on May 21, Fire Chief Ron Leach backed the way that Cutright did her job on election night. “She is an experienced and capable designated election official (DEO),” Leach said. “Her integrity is impeccable. … She did everything appropriately on election night.”

Smith presented what he saw as several mistakes or possible mistakes that occurred during the long election night that did not conclude until Cutright posted the results after midnight on May 14.

Among Smith’s allegations: • Judges (ballot counters) should have posted the results themselves but instead gave them to Cutright, who later posted them.

• The results should be been posted “immediately” but Cutright did not do so for 20-30 minutes; • Some staff members learned of the election results before they were posted for all to see; • Ballots were left unattended for 20-30 minutes after the judges left; • Cutright, Leach and the district’s attorney, Eric Gross, met behind closed doors in Cutright’s office after the judges brought up the ballots from the basement.

After Smith outlined his concerns, Fire Board Chairman Gene Schilling said “OK,” and asked for comments from the other board members. There were none.

The board briefly discussed two other agenda items and Schilling asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting.

At that point, Gary McElwee, a challenger who placed fifth among the five candidates in the election, spoke up and said it was “interesting” that nobody had a comment on the “unusual circumstances” of the election.

“Nobody has a comment?” he asked the board.

McElwee reiterated that two staffers and the district’s attorney retired to a room for 20 minutes after the judges delivered the votes. “ … (Colorado Revised Statutes) say the votes must be posted immediately,” McElwee said.

Schilling replied, “I have no comment.”

After brief comments from McElwee and board member Lou Eller, Schilling said he’d been through a lot of elections and had “no doubt” the election was done fairly.

“(But) there’s a perception that needs to be brought out in the open,” McElwee replied. “People are wondering … .”

Schilling reiterated that everything was “done correctly.”

Soon after that exchange, Schilling made a motion to adjourn the half-hour meeting, which passed unanimously.

After the meeting, McElwee told The Sun, “If the board truly did hear the general public ‘loud and clear’ and are seeking transparency, then ‘no comment’ only tells me there will not be any change.”

When asked after the meeting about his “no comments,” Schilling told The Sun the fire board will have to look into Smith’s concerns. “I don’t know what went on.” He said the board would have to look at state statutes, so at that point in time (during the meeting) he had no comment.

When asked if he had any questions during the meeting, he said “Nope,” then said the board will have to discuss where to go from here.

This week, Leach defended Cutright on all counts. He said the judges brought the ballots upstairs from the basement after the count in a “banker’s box” and gave them to Cutright, who put them in her office. She later went to the basement

and found five “spoiled ballots” in a box.

At one point after receiving the ballots, Cutright’s office was swarmed with staffers, candidates and others, so Leach said he “kicked them out” so that the process would not be disrupted. All that remained in the room behind a closed door were Cutright, Leach and attorney Gross. The three spent time in the office because this is the first election in which the district must operate under the new CRS 14-1164, a 100-page-plus law that governs how special district elections must be conducted.

Leach said the results posted on election night were a copy of the abstract the judges gave to Cutright. “She kept the original.”

Five candidates vied for three seats in the election, including incumbents Schilling and Michael Kennedy. Smith garnered the most votes with 974, followed by Kennedy with 917. Schilling edged sitting board member Mark Chain by five votes (875-870). McElwee chalked up 863 votes.

Leach concluded his remarks to The Sun by thanking Chain for his contributions to the fire board during his nineyear tenure. “He did a great job for his community … .”

In a meeting that members agree was the most productive to date, the Carbondale Fire District Citizen Advisory Board discussed finances as they relate to service levels and other “meat and potato” issues during their monthly meeting on May 19. One board member thought the district might consider a “bridge loan” to avoid drastic cuts until property valuations return to a level that taxes can support existing service levels. The next meeting is June 16.

there were never any minuses to her job as an educator. “I just wanted a place for children to feel safe. I wanted them to always feel comfortable coming to me. I had an impact on so many lives. It doesn’t matter where I go, I always hear, ‘Mrs. Fischer, you had me!’ I’m even friends with a lot of them on Facebook, which is kinda weird.” She laughs her classic Bonnie laugh, with her chest shaking from the humor of it all. “What do I love about it? Watching them grow and change, and getting their little notes of appreciation and love.” She pulls out a little construction paper card decorated with hearts, flowers and butterflies-“for Mrs. Fisher (sic) you always look beautiful From: Johan.”

Bonnie’s scrapbooks are filled with 44 years of photos, misspelled student notes of appreciation and teaching awards. These are treasures from Carbondale Elementary School’s history.

When thinking about naming a Carbondale park after the 1982 Honorable Mention Colorado Teacher of the Year, the 1993 Colorado Teacher of the Year, the 1999 LS Wood Teacher of the Year, and the 2010 Carbondale Woman of the Year, Cammack’s response, “Because it’s Bonnie!” is easy to understand.

It might even be easier to understand because Bonnie sums up her teaching philosophy as this: “They’re just kids, and each is their own person. I just want to bring out the best in each one of them.”

Fire district hits the road

CCS holds plant sale

The Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District board will hit the road for three monthly meetings outside of Carbondale.

Those meetings are: June 11, Redstone fire station; Aug. 13, Marble fire station; and Oct. 8, West Bank area fire station. The meetings begin at 5:30 p.m. The fire district board meets the second Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. at 301 Meadwood Dr.

Bruna, Bartels launch Mindful Life Program Sopris Sun Staff Report Former Buddhist monk/counselor/teacher John Chophel Bruna has partnered with long-time local Laura Bartels to create the Mindful Life Program, offering practical and transformative courses, retreats and resources in mindfulness. Based in Carbondale at the Third Street Center, they offer programs locally and throughout the U.S., Canada and Australia to help participants live a meaningful life according to their own values, and learn to respond skillfully to life’s events, said a press release.

Bruna is the director of the Way of Compassion Foundation and co-founder of the Mindful Life Program. Not unfamiliar to the Roaring Fork Valley, Bruna, who was a Tibetan Buddhist monk for more than six years, used to tour with his fellow monks from Gaden Shartse Monastery through Aspen and Glenwood Springs. Having moved to Carbondale last summer, he now has a steadily growing number of people from the area studying with him and attending weekly groups, retreats and trainings.

Bruna’s journey to Carbondale is unlikely. When he was growing up amid poverty, drugs and violence in Los Angeles, one of nine children of a widowed mother, he had one goal: to not go to prison like

family members and friends.

Despite stealing alcohol from liquor stores at age 10, becoming an alcoholic, a drug addict, homeless and a father at 20, Bruna managed to achieve that goal, according to a press release. But at 22, as his life spiraled out of control, he decided to get clean and sober and set a new goal: God’s will be done, not mine.

“My will always got me in trouble,” he said. “For me, it translates into: How can I be of benefit?” Fifteen years into recovery, another pivotal event came when he started to meditate and follow the Buddhist teachings of the Dalai Lama.

“I realized that much of the suffering in the world is unnecessary,” said Bruna, who in 2005 became an ordained Buddhist monk in the Tibetan tradition. “To have real peace in life, you have to have peace with yourself. Meditation allowed me to quit reacting to the world and to be able to respond skillfully with intention. I was able to go inside and look at the patterns in my life that led to unhappiness and ask myself: What will help me lead the life I want, a beneficial life?”

Today, Bruna travels the United States and Canada giving workshops and leading retreats designed to help others lead happier lives. He is currently teaching a four-

He also leads a weekly Mindfulness Group, and a weekly meditation and dharma talk.

“The quicker we identify our emotions, the more skillfully we can respond to them instead of simply reacting to them,” Bruna said.

Bruna said he believes that one of the best ways to become aware of one’s emotions and respond appropriately is through cultivating mindfulness throughout one’s daily life, which is an integral part of his teachings. Mindfulness, even practiced for a few weeks, can transform lives, according

to Bruna. The key to mindfulness is training the mind, which is done through meditation. “Meditation settles the mind, bringing it back to its natural state,” he said.

At the end of 2011, Bruna said he transitioned from the life as a Tibetan Buddhist monk to a layperson because he felt he could be more effective, reaching more people, as a layperson than as a monk. In 2012, he founded the non-profit Way of Compassion Foundation, with the mission of helping people live meaningful lives according to their own values and spiritual beliefs. The foundation operates on donations he receives from his workshops and public talks and from sponsors. Desiring to offer mindfulness training that was practical, accessible and universal, Bruna, along with Australian colleague Mark Molony, created a curriculum for a comprehensive mindfulness course that is adaptable to all types of specific audiences from the general public, to educators, therapists and recovery programs among others. The goal is to help participants live a meaningful life according to their own values, while cultivating emotional and “attentional” balance.

Business cooperative promotes bartering, entrepreneurism

By Evan Zislis Special to The Sopris Sun In 2012 I created my own consulting firm. I had no idea what to do or how to start, so I reached out to individuals in my community who had experience with small business.

My network turned out to be extensive. There was expertise in business creation, management, finance, marketing, strategic planning, program development, branding and more. I was saved by a community of individuals willing to share what they knew — many times in exchange for whatever I was willing to trade in return.

Over time, their collective knowledge became integrated with my own practice. A viable business was created from a little self-determination and the generosity of others.

In an effort to share the practical methods of my own success, I recently created the Bonedale Business Cooperative, a hyper-local group of entrepreneurs willing to share what they know. Our informal collective is really just a loose-knit crowd of Carbondale small businesses and nonprofit leaders eager to support one another. There’s no membership fee, just a simple understanding that everyone is invited to contribute something, someday. The more participation, the stronger the group — and the more beneficial to everyone involved.

Members are encouraged to host a workshop, teach a class, write a testimonial, share a product, donate some time or materials, network a little, collaborate a lot, and help each other grow. Peppered throughout public and private venues around Carbondale, the Bonedale Business Cooperative is designed to be casual, impromptu and responsive to the needs of its members. Without any cumbersome bylaws, membership fees or governing executive committees, we are simply a group of people informally reaching out in support of one another. No rules. In true Carbondale form, we’re organic, no-fee, freerange, and home grown.

To get involved, simply reach out to your friends. Keep it informal. Nothing fancy, just real discussion about what’s needed and who is willing to contribute along those lines. Forget professionally designed posters and fee-based promotions, just grab a drink in town or host some friends in your living room. Keeping it casual helps to maintain the accessibility of what this is intended to be — local friends helping each other out with best practices in good business.

There used to be a time when local economies were based solely on the barter system. A carton of eggs for a bundle of wool. Some milled lumber for a dairy cow. A lesson in this for a hand with that. Cooperation and shared resources for the collective gain held the highest value, the

greatest good. A return to this model may help restore some creative innovation among forward-thinking entrepreneurs trying to do more with less.

Trends indicate that entrepreneurialism is on the rise.

Whether out of sheer desperation or creative will, more and more people are successfully launching their own wares and services. In a wide array of industries, local entrepreneurs are carving viable economic niches where none existed before. When we combine the spirit of the barter system with the ingenuity and ownership of small business, we empower up-and-coming entrepreneurs to flourish.

I’ve personally experienced the benefits from voluntarily trading goods and services. I’ve seen it effectively supplement tangible income when cash was not readily available. A willingness among neighbors to cooperate, share and pull the collective weight helps create thoughtfully intentional communities that thrive. When we strategically integrate the barter system into local economies, we provide incentive for everyone to contribute. By leveling the community playing field in this way, individuals are more inclined to take responsibility for themselves and develop something of value for others.

Comfort Inn & Suites completes $1 million renovation project Sopris Sun Staff Report The owners of the Carbondale Comfort Inn & Suites have completed the two-stage renovation of their 76-room hotel. Located at 920 Cowen Drive, the Comfort Inn features newly reappointed guest rooms and common areas, according to a press release.

The Phase I common area renovation was completed in the spring of 2013. The Phase II work, recently completed, focused on guest room renovations. Included in the room renovations was the installation of new furniture, flooring,

lighting, bedding items, bathroom vanities and plumbing fixtures, among other items. Lobby renovations include new entry doors, lobby flooring, carpeting, interior signage, lighting and furniture throughout.

Over the next few months Comfort Inn & Suites will focus on other improvements to the exterior of the property, including landscaping. Since the new ownership group took over the hotel in mid-2012, it has invested in excess of $1 million improving the property. When contacted, a spokesman for the hotel ownership group said they were

excited about being part of the Carbondale community and optimistic about its future.
