Group proposes new farmer’s market

A

group of local food producers is working on plans to establish an afternoonevening Wednesday farmers market in Carbondale, to complement the existing farmers market that has taken place on Wednesday mornings at the 4th Street Plaza downtown for more than a decade.

Terri Anzini, who grew up in the Roaring Fork Valley, operates Roots & Roost Farm, which produces eggs for sale to area consumers Anzini confirmed on Monday that she will be the manager of the new market, and that she is working with several other women to get it going by early July. She said that, since February, she has been working with Gwen Garcelon, founder of the Roaring Fork Food Alliance, who came up with the idea.

So far, Anzini said, she has about 20 vendors signed up, a couple of whom sell at the morning market and will be putting up booths at the afternoon market once it starts up.

But aside from those, she said, “We’ve kind of got this whole new group of people,” starting with the three other women working on the project.

The working group, she said, includes Merrill Johnson of Merrill’s Family Farm in the Missouri Heights region north of Carbondale; Whitney Will of Roaring Gardens near the Waldorf School on the Roaring Fork; and Erin Cuseo of Erin’s Acres, also on Missouri Heights.

An honor to serve; commitment won’t diminish

By Stacey Bernot “If you don’t like it, do something about it”… my husband’s words to me over 12 years ago after I once again lamented that some local leaders were out of touch with young working families trying to make a life here in Carbondale. Little did he or I know what those words would mean so many years later.

Reflecting on my time as volunteer, town trustee, and mayor has brought a multitude of feelings, past experiences, and thoughts on issues left uncompleted. During this time of reflection the most recurring thought I have is one of gratitude. Giving back to a community that has provided so much for me throughout my life was easy. The example set by my family and friends as a child made volunteering just another part of my routine. My motivation to give back and work to keep Carbondale a “real” community was spurred by my desire for my children to experience the charm of growing up here, just as I did before them.

Our town is filled with people willing to give back, whether that is with their time, skill set or check books. It would be impossible to list all the amazing people that make Carbondale a genuinely wonderful place. Given our limited resources as a municipality, our town staff is a highly dedicated and remarkable bunch. Those women and men know the meaning of community, and are part of a culture of collaboration that sets Carbondale apart. Many of the folks that work tirelessly on behalf of our town are behind the scenes, out of the spotlight, but their work and contributions to this place are significant.

My family has been a driving force behind my work for Car-

bondale, and they have been the most generous of these people behind the scenes. Mike, Hayden and Kendall have sacrificed and given more to this community than most ever will. That’s why if now is the time for them to make a change, I wholeheartedly and unequivocally choose them. Please know that resigning as mayor of Carbondale was not an easy decision, but the right one for my family.

It has been a tremendous honor to serve my hometown, and while my residence will change, my commitment to Carbondale will not diminish. To say it’s been a pleasure to serve and work on behalf of this community would be an understatement. I am proud of the projects we have completed, the vision we have continued and the hard work we’ve all put into this exceptional place.

Over 16 years ago, I set out volunteering on the Parks and Recreation Commission to give back to a community that had given so much to me. Turns out I have benefited enormously from my service from knowledge obtained, perspective gained and friendships made. The essence of Carbondale is not comprised of the awe-inspiring natural landscape around us, nor is it contained in the built environment. The essence of this community is the diverse people that work, play and live here. I will forever be grateful to this community for giving me the opportunity to serve. Thank you all for making my service meaningful.

Michael Durant is right Dear Editor: Michael Durant is absolutely right about affordable housing. Affordable housing is “growth.” There is a rule about growth: some growth leads to more growth. And the corollary is: the more you grow, the more “affordable” housing you will want. If you want proof, just look at Aspen. They build and build housing and there is never enough.

Affordable housing is one of those emotional political issues. It feels like there is an overwhelming need to put people into buildings; it just feels good. It is as if these people, whoever they are, are out in the cold and the wet, shivering and starving. Most of the time these folks are in a perfectly fine place to live; it’s just someplace else. But, these are such good and nice people they should be here — right here in Carbondale.

Maybe not.

Who actually wants more people in Carbondale? We are pretty crowded here already, as Michael pointed out. My family came to Carbondale more than 20 years ago and the population has more than doubled. We came to Carbondale from Snowmass Village. There was less in Snowmass Village than in Carbondale. But funny thing, we loved Carbondale just the way it was. I wouldn’t have changed a single thing.

Who benefits the most from a plentiful

supply of new people? Of course it is the business owners. What a problem it is to put out an ad in the newspapers for a new employee and no one answers. Or isn’t it terrible if you hire some out-of-towner for your very important position, that no one already in the valley can possibly do, and they can’t find a place to live — especially on the fantastic wages they would be receiving.

The people who should be the most suspicious of these inevitable cries for “affordable” housing are the very people who own their own places and work for businesses that are oh-so-reluctant to give them a raise.

Working home owners get shafted in several ways. First, affordable housing is usually subsidized (see the recent news articles). That means our taxes are supporting the newbies.

Second, more working people here means that there is less pressure for wages to rise along with the cost of living. So we make less.

Third, more public services are needed to take care of the needs of the new folks. Our taxes go up (see mill levies). Fourth, everything is more crowded. The streets and roads are jammed, the schools are crammed and the trails are full.

And lastly a personal favorite — fresh powder is gone from the slopes in an hour or two.

Please consider EIA Dear Editor: Today I met with my English In Action student, Gloria, at the Basalt Regional Library. We talked about what we did for Mother’s Day, how to sign her daughter up for an art class and swim lessons, what we were going to make for dinner tonight. We will see each other again next week, maybe go for a hike. Ordinary conversations and activities with a friend.

Yet this relationship is the result of a unique opportunity that English In Action offers to everyone in our community who is curious about different cultures and wants to learn from another’s life experiences. English In Action has given Gloria and me the chance to share our lives, and to learn from each other.

I am helping Gloria improve her skills in English. Together, we work on her reading and writing. We use workbooks to understand and practice grammar and learn the long list of irregular verbs. She is practicing for an upcoming parent/teacher conference for her third grade daughter.

Gloria is helping me understand the challenges of life as an immigrant in the Roaring Fork Valley. Getting jobs, going to the doctor, renting an apartment, participating in her children’s education, supportLETTERS page 15

Williams, Rollyson retiring; great memories abound At RFHS

By Emily Bruell Special to The Sopris Sun Since his entrance into the Carbondale school system as a kindergartner in 1968, Larry Williams has spent over 40 years as a student, coach and teacher in Carbondale schools. At Roaring Fork High School, he’s taught everything from photography and social studies to archery and fly-fishing, and has coached teams to state championships in football and girls basketball. Williams, who will be officially retiring at the end of this school year, spent some with The Sopris Sun reflecting on his years as a teacher and coach at RFHS. His history with the school goes beyond his own experience in the school system; his mother, Irwina Bogue, was part of RFHS’s first graduating class in 1961. Before that, his grandmother, Olyve Boyd, graduated from Carbondale Union High (the school which would later become RFHS ) in 1935.

Williams graduated from RFHS in 1981, but he wasn’t ready to leave the field of education. “I knew I wanted to teach and coach from an early age,” he recalled, citing role models like teachers Bonnie Cretti and Richard Southall, and coaches Tom Brown and Sonny Darien as inspiration. So, after student teaching in Basalt, he headed to northeastern Colorado to work at Fleming Junior/Senior High School. Although he enjoyed the job itself, Williams found himself homesick for his family and friends, and the mountains he’d grown up in. When he received word of a position opening at RFHS,

He began as a social studies teacher and assistant coach for the football, basketball and track teams. After completing training in physical education and substitute teaching, he was hired as a PE teacher part-time in the elementary school and part-time in the high school.

Soon after, he was hired full-time at RFHS, where he has since taught psychology, geography, photography, and many other subjects.

Looking back on his 28 years with RFHS, Williams said his most memorable moments include tearing his ACL during a faculty versus seniors’ softball game, the boys’ basketball teams making the playoffs for the past six years in a row, and “Every time the light

RFHS art show has a special surprise

By Tavia Teitler Special to The Sopris Sun The Roaring Fork High School Art Show is a longstanding tradition and this year, as part of a newer tradition, the show will be accompanied by two special musical performances. On May 17, the RFHS band will be performing at 6 p.m. in the high school gym and the choir will be performing at 7 p.m. in the auditeria. Both performances are free and open to the public.

For RFHS band director Mark Gray, this performance is the opportunity “to do something a little unusual and give the public something to listen to that they might not normally get the chance to hear.”

The RFHS band’s spring performance will be less of a traditional band concert and more of a commentary on society. “What we hope to accomplish with this piece is to hold a mirror up to the audience and show them how we experience art music and sound in our daily lives,” Gray said.

According to Gray, with the wide-spread availability of music in the modern world, people often don’t get the chance to choose what they listen to. “We listen to what surrounds us and the sounds that we hear and the music that we hear is radically different than going to a concert hall and sitting down to actually listen,” Gray said.

“Radically different” is perhaps one of the best ways to describe the upcoming band performance. To obtain the music for the piece, Gray had each of his students cut out short pieces of three of their favorite band pieces.

During the performance these pieces will be placed on music stands scattered around the art show. Band members will wander from stand to stand playing the different pieces of music so that at any given moment, small bits of several different pieces will be heard.

The piece will also include a theatrical component with each student dressed in costume and assuming a different character as the piece is performed. “It will be fun to watch people’s reactions to it, not really having seen something like this before,” said band member Julia Lee. The Spring Sing Choir Concert will also deviate a little from the norm. The concert will start with solos and duets from choir members, giving choir director Shanti Gruber the chance to showcase her students’ talent and give them the chance to “step outside their shell and sing a song without the choir next to them supporting them.”

The solos will then be followed by the Bel Canto Children’s Choir that Gruber has been working with at Carbondale Middle School.

The performance will end with four songs from the whole RFHS Choir as well as a special senior song.

“This concert is special for me because all of these seniors started the choir program with me four years ago,” Gruber said. “I’m pretty excited to send them on their way but I’m also feeling somber in the fact that they will be leaving us.”

Williams won’t be leaving RFHS entirely; he plans to continue coaching boys basketball. Still, the amount of time he spends at the school will drastically decrease, and Williams said he knows he’ll miss the students and coworkers, especially his friend Larry Black. Williams’ other retirement plans include spending more time with his wife and family, and hopefully returning to his hobby of fly-fishing.

While not all of his memories of teaching are happy ones, Williams concluded that he’s never regretted his choice to pursue a career RETIRING TEACHERS page 15

Sopris Sun Staff Report In his weekly memo to the town trustees, staffers and others, Town Manager Jay Harrington said Carbondale Fire District Deputy Chief Rob Goodwin has certiďŹ ed the police department for the use of Narcan, which Harrington described as “an Opiate Antagonistâ€? that is used to counter the effects of heroin and other opiate drugs.

In other news from Harrington’s weekly memo, the ďŹ rst North Face Bike Park volunteer work day will take place today from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on May 12. All users of the park’s facilities are invited to contribute to prepare the park for the summer biking season, including the youth summer bike park lessons and the BonedaleBike Jam competition on May 21, starting at 10:30 a.m.

Work is to include weeding, picking up rocks, painting and an overlay of a sand-clay mixture to make the biking surface more durable and consistent for users.

This is the second year of North Face Bike Park programming, and this summer there are three sessions of classes scheduled: June 1, 8, 15 and 22; July 6, 13, 20 and 27; and Aug. 10, 17, 24 and 31. Classes are open to all levels of riders, will take place from 5-6 p.m. each Wednesday of the schedule, and will focus on basic skills as well as pumping, jumping and cornering techniques.

Also in the realm of the town’s recreational programming, the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center will continue with its drop-in, early-release sessions on Wednesday afternoons until the end of the 2016 school year, according to the memo.

Also continuing will be Motion Mondays for kids aged 1-6 years old on Mondays from 10:30-11:45 a.m., and there will be three Special Water Fun Days on June 13, July 18 and Aug. 15.

SATURDAY, April 30: At 10:36 p.m. police stopped a vehicle for speeding on Harris Drive. After investigating, they arrested the driver, a 44-year-old Carbondale man, on charges of careless driving and driving while intoxicated. He was taken to the GarďŹ eld County Jail.

TUESDAY, May 3: Police were called to two accident scenes, one at 2:30 p.m., a hit-and-run on GarďŹ eld Avenue in which there were no suspects, the other at 4:17 p.m., a “damage onlyâ€? accident with no injuries at Nieslanik Drive and Highway 133, in which no citations were issued.

WEDNESDAY, May 4: At 9:09 p.m. two ofďŹ cers were dispatched to a reported disturbance on Colorado Avenue involving a man with a reported gun. Based on witness reports the suspect, a 44-year-old man was arrested and taken to the GarďŹ eld County Jail on charges of committing a bias-motivated crime of menacing and prohibited use of a ďŹ rearm.

THURSDAY, May 5: At 10:40 a.m. police were contacted by the manager of a company about threatening and harassing behavior by a former employee. No criminal acts were involved, police concluded, though they cautioned the former employee to cease and desist any such activities and to have no further contact with the reporting party.

Harrington reported that two new pool heaters have been installed at the John M. Fleet Municipal and are functioning well, and that lifeguard classes are proceeding. A second lifeguard class, from June 25-19, also has been scheduled.

In other town news, the Gateway RV Park experienced a broken water pipe in the mechanical room recently, ooding the water heater and damaging Internet router equipment. Replacement parts were ordered and mostly received, and repairs were nearly completed as of May 6, Harrington reported. Registered guests have been notiďŹ ed, and have been offered full refunds in cases where they need to cancel their stays at the park.

A police-ofďŹ cer candidate, Tom O’Leary, has accepted a conditional job offer from the town. Background and other testing has begun, and Harrington reported that the hope is that O’Leary will begin ďŹ eld training soon.

Sales tax revenues, Carbondale’s main source of municipal income, were 3.4 percent higher in April than they were in April, 2015, Harrington wrote. To date for 2016, revenues are up 6.9 percent.

The streets crew has been busy recently, installing a drywell on Weld Court to alleviate a storm-water drainage problem; grading White Hill Road and several alleyways; cleaning the winter’s accumulation of sand and gravel from medians and road surfaces at the intersection of Highways 82/133; and setting up barricades for street closures in conjunction with the Creative District’s street party, First Friday, Swing Into Spring and the Dandelion Day parade.

At a “broad discussion� of affordable housing at a recent Planning & Zoning Commission meeting, Harrington reported, the commissioners agreed that studies are needed to determine local salary levels and housing needs.

The Forest Service’s Smokey Bear and Mateo Sandate (top center) were present to make sure the different species were on their best behavior, and left their matches at home but still had a blast. Congratulations to the Roaring Fork High School Energy Club, which received the Carbondale Environmental Board’s “Order of the Dandelion” award for its efforts to bring a solar array to the school.

As for the products that will be available to patrons, Anzini said, there will be organic produce; some prepared foods “ready to eat;� locally packaged foods such as pickles, salsa, jams and jellies; arts and crafts; body-care products produced locally; what she called “heritage pork� products and other items. “We want to get the after-work crowd,�

Anzini explained. “We want to be in the center of town, so people can walk to it,� but wanted a different location from the morning market to differentiate the two.

Anzini met with Carbondale Recreation Director Jeff Jackel this week to talk about possible sites for the market, and has all but decided to use the parking area behind the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center.

The site is ideal for its central location, according to Anzini as well as Jackel, and sufďŹ cient nearby parking to accommodate commuting workers.

Jackel said there had been other locations considered, including Sopris Park just off Main Street, Miners’ Park behind City Market, and the open grassy area behind the Third Street Center (aka Bonnie Fisher Park).

By Illène Pevec Carbondale Arts (CCAH) prepared for many months to host the three-day Colorado Creative Industries Summit before it opened on May 5. Opening day found artists and culturalorganization leaders from all over Colorado sitting in the Orchard’s outdoor amphitheater soaking up the morning sun and Mount Sopris view. I asked people what they did and where they did it, and realized the rich and abundant human experience gathered here to share and support creative visions and communities throughout our state.

Create Places, based in Fort Collins, brings in artists to collaborate with marginalized residents to vision services and activities they want to enliven their communities. By helping people gain a voice in shaping their neighborhoods, Create Places also facilitates discovering ways to make these areas more environmentally sustainable.

A STEAM (Science, Theater, Education, Arts and Music) team from Durango came to learn about creating centers for culture to flourish. In that vein, Gavin Brooke, one of the architects to lead the planning and retrofitting process for the Third Street Center, gave a presentation on Carbondale’s planning and design steps in up-cycling the former grade school into an energy efficient, community oriented, beautiful public space.

Vail’s Art in Public Places director described the town’s One Percent for the Arts in all public construction that supports hiring artists from around the world to create public art.

Vail will soon have mosaics in their new skate park. It will be a place to stop to give kids a chance to get some exercise on the way to somewhere on the I-70 route — exercise and art in one outdoor facility.

Pueblo’s Sangre de Cristo Art and Conference Center team invited us all to come to their Ansel Adams show (Adams’ daughter’s collection) that will open this summer and be up through September. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the U.S. National Parks system, the Children’s Museum in the art center is hosting children’s art making in response to nature in the parks.

Youth On Record, a nonprofit in Denver providing music recording education for youth in danger of dropping out of high school, participated in a Thursday afternoon workshop on social entrepreneurship: money making enterprises that serve a common good. This organization serves 1,000 teens and built its 5,000 square foot state-of-the-art recording studio by collaborating with a federal Housing and Urban Development program in Denver. Professional musicians are paid to teach the youth and also get free recording time in the studio. Who would have thought a music studio serving youth could be part of an affordable housing project? This group thought outside the box to bring youth and musicians together to thrive.

The Tiny Village set up at Fourth and Main streets featured the Tiny Cinema where silent movies were shown with a live musician providing music in the four-seat theater. There was

also the Tiny House recording studio for singers and storytellers to make a vinyl postcard record, and the Tiny Art Gallery in a trailer featuring tiny-scaled art pieces in glass, iron, paper, wool and wood. How much fun can a person have in one tiny space?

Each conference attendee came to share ideas, brainstorm and learn from the presenters and attendees. When this many cultural creatives get together, it leads to dancing in the street and perhaps many new collaborations. Carbondale’s own Let Them Roar played outside the Marble Distilling Co. on Thursday night. Fire dancers, amazing art cars from the Trinidad art car festival (including a neon skeleton) added to the fun. Creativity is a free, natural resource, innate in us all.

The Colorado Creative Industries Summit brought together individuals and communities to communicate and collaborate for dynamic innovation and creation.

Powers Art Center tour “an amazing treat” for CCI Summit

By Nicolette Toussaint Sopris Sun Contributor What does it take to impress someone like Barbara Burch, a former staffer at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, who has probably visited more art museums than she can remember?

Take her to the Powers Art Center on Missouri Heights.

“This is an amazing treat,” said Burch, who is now senior development manager for the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center in Pueblo. “It’s a wonderful thing to see artistic gems dotted around the mountains of Colorado. The way this museum is integrated into the mountain setting is terrific. It’s one of the best I have seen, and I have seen a lot.”

Burch, and two vans full of other attendees at last week’s Colorado Creative Industries Summit, toured the 14,502square-foot museum.

Located on pasture land overlooking Carbondale (one can see the center from the Delaney dog park) the Powers Art Center is run by a private foundation. The museum serves as a memorial to its founder, John G. Powers, who died in 1999. An attorney with Chadbourne, Hunt, Jaeckel & Brown in New York, Powers became general counsel for Prentice-Hall publishing in 1943, then its president in 1954. A frequent visitor to

Aspen, he founded the Aspen Institute’s Asian seminars.

Powers retired in his late 40s and devoted the rest of his life to collecting contemporary American art, and Japanese art of the fifth through 19th centuries. Powers’ wife, Kimiko, commissioned the Art Center, which was designed by Japanese architect Hiroshi Nanamori, to house Powers’ collections. In addition to the Johns’ works, the Art Center also features an extensive collection of Pop Art books and ceramics by Takashi Nakazato.

Standing nearby the portrait during last week’s Creative Summit tour, Powers Art Center Director Melissa English welcomed the group, explaining that Powers spent “so much time in Aspen he finally decided it made sense to buy local property.”

Powers purchased a 460-acre parcel on Missouri Heights, a former ranch, because it offered a stunning view of Mount Sopris.

The museum shows not only Jasper Johns’ works on paper, but also graphic works by Robert Rauschenberg. Collected by Powers, these pieces recently traveled to the National City Art Center in Tokyo. Rauschenberg is

peaks are mirrored by a 5,600-square-foot reflecting pool lined with black granite. The understated, minimalist structure is faced in sandstone from Lyons, Colorado, and its interior is rendered in tones of buff and warm gray set off with glass and steel.

The art inside is as modern as its showcase building. Jill Scher, a Carbondale fiber artist, was intrigued to see the chronology of Jasper Johns’ works. Peering closely at the details in one large print, she noted, “There’s American Sign Language in this one. This whole series has been playing with language. It’s powerful. You’ll be looking at a print that’s all gray, but the words ‘blue’ and ‘yellow’ are there

and you actually see blue and yellow.”

Like many other locals on the Creative Summit tour, Scher was making a first-ever trip to the Powers Art Center. “I have never been up here before. I know Johns’ work, but there are so many pieces here I haven’t known about at all.”

Candace Jones, who was attending the Creative Summit on behalf of the Steamboat Springs Art Council, said, “Johns’ work was relevant when it was created; it’s relevant today. Lots of soul-searching. You can see him working with some themes that go from his beginning to his end. And the technical ability to create what he did is mind-blowing.”

Jones, who teaches a studio printing class, added, “to see an artist of this caliber working with a master printer is incredible.”

Nancy Lovendahl, a stone sculptor in Old Snowmass, is another local who took the tour. “I felt a bit guilty … I’m a local and I’m taking a seat from a visitor,” she confided “but I have never been here before.”

The Powers Art Center is currently closed for installation of a new exhibit but will reopen on June 6, according to its Website. The center’s official hours are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; a sign on the driveway gate says “hours subject to change without notice.”

Distillery gives bees a boost with roo�op hives Vodka plays in to the mix

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer Honey bees are dying the world over, prompting alarming cautionary articles about the possible destruction of the food chain and incipient devastation to human populations that depend on bees in ways most people don’t recognize.

But here in Carbondale, one local business is doing something to work against what is known as the global honeybee colony collapse disorder [HCCD] by putting two hives on the rooftop of the Marble Distilling Company Luxury Inn & Lounge [or MDC for short], a small distiller of vodka and other spirits that opened up last year. “We’re doing it partly to keep everything in balance and keep the owers blooming,â€? said Carey Shanks, part owner of the distillery at 150 Main St., adding, “we’re trying to add some pollination to the local ora and fauna.â€?

But the business also hopes to use some of the honey produced by the bees [much of it has to stay in the hive for the health of the bees] to make a new, honey-avored vodka drink, said Shanks’ wife and MDC co-owner, Connie Baker.

The MDC’s two experimental hives were placed on the roof two weeks ago, said Baker, by well-known local beekeeper Bob Bailey [Bailey was oating the Colorado River this week and unavailable for comment).

But the idea originally came from Mitch Meyers, the woman who heads up a “proof agency� in St. Louis, Mo., which has been working with the MDC to get is product line up and running.

One day when Baker and Black were chatting and Baker mentioned she was fascinated by bees, Black said, “Oh, you have to talk with Mitch about it, she’s a beekeeper,�

Baker recalled.

Baker tasted honey from Meyers’ bees and quickly became an aďŹ cionado of bees, so much so that Shanks bought her a hive last year, which they placed on their property in the Town of Marble [which gave the distillery its name and is the source of the marble chips through which the MDC’s vodka is ďŹ ltered].

It was some time later that Baker was talking about her interest in bees and Bailey, the beekeeper, happened to be sitting nearby and overheard the conversation, Baker continued.

Bailey suggested putting hives on the rooftop, offered to help make it happen, and the bees are now living on the roof.

Bailey, she explained, has a shop in Carbondale where he built their hives, and is well known in the Roaring Fork Valley as an advocate of bees and the work they do to keep life on the planet moving along.

In fact, said Shanks, “Once you get him started [on the subject of bees], he’s hard to stop.�

The hives are not the typical stacked boxes one sees along the roadsides all over the U.S., but are instead what are called “top bar� hives, in which the bees build their combs in suspension from slats of wood laid across the top of the hive chamber.

The couple said they are not anticipating any trouble between the bees and their patrons — whether at the lounge and bar or in the hotel rooms upstairs — because bees pretty much keep to themselves unless disturbed.

Even when they are swarming, according to Baker [quoting Bailey], bees are gentle

under most circumstances.

In fact, Baker said, she has been told that if building contractors come across a swarm in their work demolishing or building homes, they should get in touch immediately with a beekeeper rather than destroy the hive and obliterate the swarm. “Swarms are valuable,� Baker said. “People want them.�

That, she added, is because a swarm generally is an indication of a colony of bees on the move with a new queen, looking for a place to locate a new hive, and are easily established and quickly productive.

Baker said they do not expect to get “a ton of honey this year� from their two hives, because it takes time for the bees to get settled and start producing at volumes that can be raided by humans.

But next year, she predicted, she will be able to pull honey and pollen out of the hives safely, and use the two products in whichever way she can devise, which already includes plans for “a special release of honey vodka.�

The bees, Baker said, can y up to ďŹ ve miles to “forageâ€? on owers such as dandelions [Carbondale’s ubiquitous town ower], borage and hops, among other plants.

In fact, Baker said, she is planning to start planting hobs and borage [a leafy bush with blue or purple owers] in ower boxes at the distillery, to provide the bees with some athome provender and show them she cares. “We need more bees in the world,â€? Baker said with a smile.

Art Base featureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Wewer Keohane, young curators Sopris Sun Staff Report The Art Base (formerly the Wyly Art Center) presents â&#x20AC;&#x153;Evolution of a Dreamâ&#x20AC;? by Cattle Creek artist Wewer Keohane through June 4, while at the Art Base Annex itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Young Curators of the Roaring Fork 2016: Generation Nowâ&#x20AC;? through May 21. Both shows open from 5 to 7 p.m. on May 13. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Evolution of a Dreamâ&#x20AC;? explores how dreams, inspired by collected ephemera, can translate into a series of artworks with a moving, underlying theme of symbolism to minimalism to abstraction, according to a press release. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Her love of paper translates into a unique body of work with graphic boldness and deep meaning,â&#x20AC;? said an Art Base spokeswoman.

Keohane was raised in Europe and lived in New York and Washington, D.C. before moving to Colorado where she pursues her art full time.

by the Aspen Art Museum since 2005, gives local high school students direct exposure to a collection of world-class exhibitions, artists and ideas of an accredited contemporary art museum. Through the course of the sixmonth program, youth curators work directly with the museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s education and curatorial staff, ultimately building aesthetic valuation, leadership, organizational, and critical-thinking skills. The 2016 Young Curators include: Lauren Anuszewski, Sari Behr, Nicole Bramson, Emma Chiles, Calli Ferguson, SoďŹ a Peterson and Razzi Schlosser (Aspen High School); Nate James (Basalt High School); Eva Pearson (Bridges High School); Nelly Gonzales, Sophia Hayes, Mae Houston, Maaija Petterson and Carolin Spaar (Glenwood Springs High School); and Justice Bouchet (Yampah Mountain High School). Gravey’s Tiny Cinema, all eyes were on Carbondale last week as the town and CCAH rolled out the creative carpet to play host to Colorado Creative Industries’ annual gathering that included three days of seminars, workshops, music, awards presentations, parties and art tours. The Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities, by the way, is nominated to become certified by the state of Colorado as a Creative District.
