Satank is anyone’s guess. With a range of individuality rarely seen in such a small area, Satank is enduring and unique. Even with all the changes Carbondale has undergone in the last few years, I’m not worried. As satankerous* as some of my neighbors are, I seriously doubt we’ll even see curb and gutter work in my lifetime.

The newest Satank trend is to live in a trailer while you build a house, and I must say, I’m rather envious (my retirement dream is to live in a trailer on the beach). Back when we moved our house to Satank, we felt it fit in perfectly because it is a stick-built to look like a modular. My husband’s brother, Jack, was the first one to buy land from my uncle Charlie, (he bought the land from Bud

Fender) and he built a straw bale house on the river. Next, we moved in an old wood house off my grandparents’ ranch; it took about 15 minutes to drive down Highway 133 with a wide load truck leading the way, and more than two hours to negotiate the twists and turns of Satank. So now, if the youngest Wilfley brother moves his family to Satank they’ll need a brick house, in keeping with the Three Little Pigs storyline. My in-laws are not as corny as I am, but they put up with my huffing and puffing jokes.

Maybe that’s the secret to Satank, a sense of humor. No one here takes life so seriously that they won’t kick off their shoes and put their feet in the ditch with a neighbor on a sunny afternoon. When Brad Hendricks (Satanker extraordinaire) passed away, there were little handmade signs in front of the houses that read: “park here” and “parking for Brad H.” It was heartwarming to see neighbors reaching out in consideration instead of calling a tow truck. True community is about appreciating each other’s differences, and paying it forward in kind.

An Alaskan returns to Dutch Creek No. 1

By Rob Mulford I guess you can say that I’m a redneck.

Heck, I do live in a ruff-cut lumber/plywood shack that I nailed together myself and don’t have indoor plumbing. I take care of the critical ancillary digestive tract functions in my outhouse. I don’t keep any reading material out there though. Interior Alaskan winters can get bitterly cold and the mosquitoes of spring and summer offer their own incentive for doing one’s business as well as the accompanying paperwork expeditiously.

But, then, the very term redneck — some-

times hijacked by the prejudice of the those who look down their noses at folks who work with their hands — in the early 20th century was epitomized by the red scarf worn by the Colorado miner symbolizing solidarity between all who toiled, be they white, black, Hispanic, etc.

From 1979 to 1982 I was an underground miner in Western Colorado. The first mine that I worked in was Mid-Continent’s Dutch Creek No. 1 coal mine, 30 some miles south of Glenwood Springs. It was notoriously deep — the mining face was around a

mile and a half from the porthole with 3,000 feet of overburden — and off gassed about 1.5 million cubic feet of methane a day.

When we walked out of the porthole at the end of the shift we all had the same jet-black skin color. Even after we left the bathhouse we easily separated from those who didn’t mine coal by the Carboniferous makeup that we wore on our eyelids.

I was working at Occidental Oil Shale’s mines in De Beque on April 15, 1981 when disaster struck the crew in Dutch Creek No. 1. I was stricken with grief. I had lost a lot of MINING MEMORIES page 9

Happy Dandy Day Dear Editor: Carbondale is about to celebrate its 17th annual Dandelion Day on May 9 in our downtown Sopris Park. We are known as being the first “organic” town park in North America, as well has having the dandelion as its official town flower.

Carbondale is known by several dozen dandelion countries around the world.

The dandelion is one of the completely edible plants around the world, but also one of the most nutritious vegetables on planet Earth. Even the pilgrim Mayflower boat is what brought dandelions to Amer-

ica from England.

The flower: has more vitamin A per unit volume than any other world plant and can be used in making foods, wines and beers.

The stem: is OK to be used in salads and stir-fries. Most known around the world to be simply cracked open and have the white stem milk squeezed onto skin-care problems to aid healing time by 50 percent. Also OK under Band-Aids.

Rejuvenated C’dale E-Board wants to “go big” Looking at expanding bag ban

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent With 17 years of formal history under its belt, the Environmental Board in Carbondale is about to undertake a new phase in its work to reduce the town’s carbon footprint and spur its citizens on to greater participation in the growing, nationwide “green” movement.

Toward that end, the members of the EBoard, as it is known, recently met with the Carbondale Board of Trustees to report on its recent progress in various programs, some of which “have lapsed in the last half of 2014. These programs are anticipated to be rejuvenated in 2015 with the new members of the board,” according to a memo from the E-Board to the trustees.

Among the programs now being contemplated by the E-Board, as discussed at their board meeting on April 27, are: • A proposal to come up with a detailed “sustainability master plan” that would be presented for ratification by the trustees and that would outline ways the town can meet its stated goals of reducing locally generated carbon emissions and thus help cut the growth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere; • Expanding the town’s existing “bag ban” that prohibits the use of plastic bags at the City Market grocery store. The idea is to prohibit the use of plastic bags by all town businesses, as well as perhaps formulating a related ban on the sale of plastic water bottles, both of which are seen as a way to reduce the town’s output of nondegradeable trash going into the region’s landfills; • Helping town staff formulate a better weed-management program than is currently in place. The idea, E-Board members said, is to avoid the use of herbicides on townowned property where weeds become a problem despite efforts to keep them at bay by organic means. Weed management was one of the issues that got the E-Board started in the first place back in the 1990s; • Work up an application process for special events that would either require or encourage vendors at special events to comply with Carbondale’s green policies concerning trash, energy use and other issues. Jason Haber, a member of the Community Office of Resource Efficiency, one of the town’s consulting nonprofits on environmental issues, told the E-board this week that CORE recently helped the Town of Basalt come up with this kind of “green events guidelines” schedule for its own special events; • Provide the trustees with advisory comments concerning budgetary requests from CORE and Clean Energy Environment for the Region (CLEER), two nonprofit organizations that are assisting the town in its energy-trimming and related environmental programming efforts. The town recently has agreed to set aside annual energy-impact grant funds, which come from energy companies through programs managed by the state, to help fund CORE’s and CLEER’s ongoing energy-efficiency and energy-saving programs.

Board, confirmed that the town is hoping these and other environmentally oriented initiatives by the E-Board will help take some of the investigative pressure off the trustees themselves.

E-Board history The E-Board, according to a history published in 2014 in The Sopris Sun, got its start as an informal board of volunteers in about 1995, mainly through the efforts of local energy-efficiency advocates Steve Standiford and Jeff Dickinson.

At that time, local environmental activists were expressing concern about the town’s use of herbicides to kill weeds in the local parks and other town-owned property. Citizen petitions convinced the town government to change its ways, and in 1998 the trustees formally created the E-Board to deal with this and other issues.

In the spring of 1998, partly in response to research by local brewmeister and chiropractor John “Doc” Philip showing that the dandelion has historically been viewed as a valuable source of nutrition, the E-Board sponsored the first-ever Dandelion Day festival in Sopris Park.

At about the same time, then-Mayor Randy Vanderhurst declared that the dandelion was Carbondale’s “town flower.”

In 2001, according to the history compiled by Sue Gray, the E-Board came up with a plan for controlling weeds by organic means, a methodology that remains largely in place today.

Building on this success, the E-Board began branching out, forming a Waste Diversion committee to deal with recycling,

composting, and the issues surrounding the trash-hauling needs of local homes and businesses.

It was the Waste Diversion committee, lead by E-Board member Julia Farwell, that was largely in charge of the e-waste, composting and other specialized collection programs of the recent Spring Cleanup Day on April 11.

Farwell compiled a preliminary summary of the results of the cleanup day, reporting that the town collected and disposed of more than 25,000 pounds of electronic, or e-waste; more than 250 pounds of used-up, single-use batteries; more than 300 light bulbs of various kinds; nearly 200 used tires; and some 2,000 pounds of “textiles and other household goods.”

Farwell noted that she is writing up a formal, and more complete report on the outcomes from the cleanup day, which will be available for public review some time in May, and that she already is making plans for next fall’s hazardous-waste disposal event.

Also formed in the E-Board’s early days were a Conservation Biology Committee, concerned with decreasing land, air and water pollution; an Energy Committee to focus on cutting local energy use and increasing the use of renewable energy resources; and an Outreach and Education Committee to teach citizens about environmental issues and to sponsor the annual Dandelion Day, now referred to as a “sustainability festival.”

Other E-Board programs over the years have included working on new ordinances governing light pollution and the use of wood-burning stoves, and helping to draft the town’s evolving energy codes.

Currently, the E-Board has eight members

— chair Jeff Lauckhart and members Scott Mills, Matt Gwost, Jason White, Chris Ellis, Patrick Hunter, Julia Farwell and Sasha Williams, according to the town website (www.carbondalegov.org).

In addition, according to the website, the board is advised by representatives from CORE, CLEER, the Garfield Clean Energy group, and by Hobbs representing the board of trustees and Utilities Director Mark O’Meara representing the town’s staff.

At the E-Board’s April 27 meeting, members expressed the hope that they can help the trustees and town staff in new and increasingly effective ways in the future.

And they plan to start by coming up with a list of several specific tasks and goals for the coming year.

“We want to go big,” declared E-Board member Scott Mills at the meeting, who described some of the efforts by the town and the board as “dinkin’ around” instead of tackling big projects representing largescale goals.

“This dinkin’ around, to me, is just that,” Mills continued. He urged the board to set a small number of big-target goals that allow for clear follow-through, such as expanding the bag-ban to cover all the businesses in town.

“That’s an example of success,” he told his fellow board members, adding that the E-Board also must figure out how to more successfully “interface” with town staff and with the other volunteer boards that advise the trustees on issues.

More precise communication is needed, he said, “so that we know we’re not spinning our wheels” and inadvertently duplicating the efforts of other boards and the town staff.

Students in the (co)studio: Design+Build program at Glenwood Springs High School showed the fruits of their labor at last weekend’s doghouse auction at Colorado Animal Rescue (CARE). A total of three doghouses that students designed and built were sold; three other shade/play structures were donated to CARE. (Co)studio is a non-profit group that collaborates with public schools and supporters to “re-tool” industrial arts education, according to program officials.

Town Briefs Town completes “spot” spraying at North Face Sopris Sun Staff Report Town Manager Jay Harrington, in his weekly memo to the town’s trustees, reported on May 1 that the controversial “spot spraying” of certain noxious weeds had been completed by Prima Plant Services at the North Face Bike Park. The bike park is closed to the public to allow the chemicals used in the spraying program to dissipate or be washed away by the irrigation system.

The park is expected to reopen to the public for a Grand Opening event on May 16, for the first-ever Free Ride Competition starting at 10:30 a.m. Registration is available online, or at the park on the day of the event.

New programming for the bike park this summer include classes on basic bike skills and more advanced skills, and classes are to be offered on Tuesdays for all levels of riders. Classes are scheduled on different dates, at different times for different ages and skill levels, and registration is available online at www.carbondalerec.com.

Town officials and event organizers are getting ready for the annual Dandelion Day parade of the species on May 9 at Sopris Park.

Local young equestrians are preparing for the first Gymkhana event of the summer season, scheduled for Sunday, May 10, at the Gus Darien Riding Arena on County Road 100 (Catherine Store Road) east of town.

Harrington reported that a new pre-school program, Krafty Kiddos, was scheduled to begin this week at the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center. The program calls for preschoolers to create a different craft item each day of class, which is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to coincide with the adult Summit Conditioning classes for parents.

Harrington announced that the Wild and Whacky Wednesday programs will not be offered this summer, but that the Motion Mondays classes for kids aged 6 and under will be offered on

Mondays from 10:15-11:45 a.m.

Also, Harrington reported, the third Monday of each month will feature a special Water Fun Day. The summer recreation brochure, as well as registration for the programs, are available online at the Rec Center’s website, www.carbondalerec.com.

The John M. Fleet Municipal Pool has been cleaned and painted, Harrington wrote in his memo, and was being filled for the summer swimming season. Harrington reported that head lifeguard training was to be held last weekend, and that there are three head lifeguards on staff learning about water chemistry, pump room operations and maintenance, emergency action plans and leadership. Lifeguard training class is schedule to begin May 15, and there is still room for prospective lifeguards to sign up for the summer.

Town workers have begun turning on sprinkler systems at town-owned properties, “with the usual spring start-up problems,” Harrington reported. Crews are repairing broken lines and sprinkler heads, as well as continuing to “top-dress” parks and athletic fields for spring seeding.

In addition, the town’s landscaping contractor is finishing up on installation of irrigation system main lines, sprinkler heads and bubblers, in preparation for installation of the irrigation pump this week.

Sales tax revenues were up 8.2 percent for April, compared to receipts in April 2014.

The town has ordered variable message signs, paid for by a Federal Mineral Leasing District grant from the Garfield County FMLD board, and the signs should be here and in service in a month or so.

Smithy turns 40, Chris and Terry Chacos look back

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent A very special lunchtime was approaching on Tuesday, May 5 at the Village Smithy restaurant in Carbondale — it was precisely 40 years earlier that restaurant founders Chris and Terry Chacos had first opened the doors of what was arguably to become the most popular eatery in town.

Serving breakfast and lunch (“Dinner was too complicated,” Chris Chacos noted that day) the Smithy, as it is known, has become almost the automatic choice for locals looking for good food and a place to encounter friends and neighbors.

It also has been what politicians now like to call “a jobcreator,” offering employment to a broad swath of local residents in a town that, in the mid 1970s, had a population of roughly 1,000 people.

During its years of operation, Terry, who is 72, estimated that the restaurant has employed about 400 people, an estimate that Chris, who turns 82 next week, neither debated nor doubted.

“She was the bookkeeper,” he said simply, by way of confirmation.

An anniversary party for present and former Smithy employees is scheduled for June 13, at which the owners hope to bring together generations of locals whose work over four decades has helped make the restaurant a success.

The Chacos couple settled in at a window table overlooking Third Street at about 11 a.m. that Tuesday and, over the following couple of hours, held informal court for a parade of well-wishers, current and former employees and longtime customers.

“I love this place,” enthused Steve Skinner, manager of the KDNK radio station and a long-time devotee of the restaurant’s fare. “Thanks for not changing. This town owes you a lot.”

In between greetings, they talked about their years together, the circumstances that preceded the founding of the restaurant, and some of the high times and odd occurrences they have witnessed and been part of over the last four decades.

At times growing teary-eyed as he talked of the past and of his personal feelings of satisfaction, honor and humility about the business, Chris recalled that he and Terry met in

the mid-1960s in Denver while both were working there as physical therapists.

Chris remembered that his first reaction to Terry was, “God, she’s cute, I’ve got to meet her.”

Laughing at the memory, he added, “Her first reaction was, ‘He’s kind of short!’”

It wasn’t long after that when he became interested in work being done by U.S. nonprofit organizations to help Vietnamese people traumatized or maimed as a consequence of the Vietnam War, Chris ended up working with the American Friends Service Committee, or Quakers, operating a daycare center in a village Chris said was named Quangi.

Terry joined him there in early 1968 without telling him in advance, which Chris said both amazed and delighted him, especially since “we had only dated a couple of times.”

While working with the Quakers, the Chacoses met the late Paul and Ginny Lappala, who also were working with the Quakers to supply muchneeded prosthetic limbs for Vietnamese farmers injured when they tripped hidden landmines in their fields.

Forced to leave Vietnam by the bloody Tet Offensive in 1968, during which the Viet Cong targeted a prison in Quangi in order to free the prisoners, the Chacoses returned to Denver and got married.

KDNK Station Manager Steve Skinner dale and owned the historic blacksmith shop building in the middle of town.

It was the Lappalas, Chris recalled, who encouraged the Chacoses to convert the old smithy to a restaurant, in a town where the dining opportunities were few and uninviting. It was an invitation that Chris, who as a child had been tantalized by observing operations at the Greek restaurants in his hometown in Ohio, could not resist.

So, on May 1, 1975, the Village Smithy was born, with Chris working as chief cook and Terry doing the bookkeeping and myriad other tasks.

“I wish Paul and Ginny were here to see this,” Chris remarked at one point, tearing up at the memory of his late, lamented friends.

The telling of their tale was interrupted every so often by local fans, such as Carbondale native Julie DeVilbiss, daughter of Peggy and the late District Judge J.E. DeVilbiss. Now living in Vermont, but on a cross country, 40th birthday jaunt with her husband, Ben, DeVilbiss stopped at the table to engage Chris and Terry in a group hug and tell them, “I’m the same age as this restaurant!”

Also stopping by was Cathy Zimney, a former dishwasher, salad and soup chef and pastry cook who treated the Chacoses and the entire restaurant to a tuneful rendition of “Happy Birthday, Village Smithy!”

Zimney, who started at the Carbondale restaurant in 1978 and was part of the team that opened up the short-lived Village Smithy II in Glenwood Springs in the early 1980s, regaled the table with tales of her time as part of the Smithy family. Dear Editor: Oil drilling has been occurring for many years and has not been regulated in over 30 years.

In the past two decades, fracking has taken center stage. Fracking companies are not subject to the Clean Water Act nor the Clean Air Act and it seems if state bills are passed to slow fracking down, there are always loop holes for the Evil Empire to jump through allowing them to continue at will.

“Our U.S. national parks and public lands are some of our most treasured places and should be protected from fracking. Yet instead of following the lead of New York in banning fracking, the Obama administration has devised fracking regulations that are nothing more than a giveaway to the oil and gas industry,” said Mark Ruffalo of Americans Against Fracking.

At a horrifying rate, natural areas set on public lands are being destroyed by fracking sites. Along with the site itself, the pipe network extends out for many meters in every direction, which lays damage to aquifers, soil and the vitality of the area. Not to mention that these pipes can and do leak the “mud” into the ground which contaminates streams, aquifers and rivers. With this in mind, integrated strategies involving renewable resources to supply our energy needs need to be taken into account. Sources such LETTERS page 9

MRPD allows grant seekers from our region to build partnerships with Front Range foundations. Often times it is difficult for the rural communities to get access to such funds in the metro area – MRPD opens this door. Along with the workshops there are also plenty of opportunities for networking. The final day allows for funder roundtables where each attendee can give their pitch to each of the funders in attendance.

Before MRPD only three percent of grant funds went to rural communities, now over 30 percent reaches our rural communities. This gives our local nonprofits the ability to explore relationships with key funders to help fund our local programs.

MRPD is made possible thanks to a steering committee of volunteers from various nonprofit organizations around the mountain region and coordinated in collaboration with Community Resource Center and Anschutz Family Foundation.

Thank you America Dear Editor: For as long as I can remember, I have been writing a letter to the editor on April 24 giving a brief history about the genocide of the Armenian nation at the hands of the Ottoman Turks.

I am a first generation American born Armenian and a descendant of genocide survivors.

This year is very different for it is the 100th year commemoration of that horrific

unthinkable act. The official order of the Minister of the Interior, Mehmet Talat Pasha, was “You have already been informed that the government … has decided to destroy all the indicated persons (Armenians) living in Turkey.”

Talat cables his prefect in Aleppo in the north of Syria on Sept. 15. “Their existence must be terminated, however tragic the measures taken may be, and no regard must be paid to either age or sex, or to any scruples of conscience.”

On this the centennial year, we see a fresh awakening. Individuals, groups, governments and even the Pope, as leader of over one billion Catholics, officially recognize that this was a true genocide. They all call on the Turkish government to recognize and accept the terminology of genocide. We demand that they admit that they perpetrated this genocide.

Although I have lived in Alaska for over 30 years I have never shaken the deep lingering sadness nor the modicum of guilt that I carry for having moved on, leaving my brothers in arms fighting onward through mother earth’s formidable barricade. I returned to Redstone this April 14-18 in the hopes of returning to No. 1 mine and paying my respects as well as meeting Mid-Continent miners and listening to their stories. I did make it up to the mine on the afternoon of April 15. Around 5:30 p.m. I got to within 500 feet or so of the portholes before I could no longer trust my 62-year-old legs and bum ankle to negotiate the icy edge of the old road that I was traversing. I stopped and drank in the old site that had been etched into my memory. Around 6 p.m. I said my goodbyes to my friends and fellow miners and headed back down the mountain. The next morning I awoke to three or four inches of snow in Redstone.

In those short few days I never did get to see and visit with any miners but I soon will be returning. If you were a Coal Basin miner, a family member or friend I would sure appreciate any of your time that you would care to share. Flappers and fun take over RFHS May 8-10 Sopris Sun Staff Report The Roaring Twenties was such a colorful decade that the team of playwright Tim Kelly and musician Bill Francoeur couldn’t resist it.

Head over to Roaring Fork High School for the student production of “Flappers” on May 8-10 and you’ll meet Polly Pepper (a young flapper who really knows how to live in the time of Stutz Bearcat automobiles), Ziegfield girls, raccoon coats, ukuleles, beauty contests, goldfish swallowers, gangsters and more.

A quick plot review reveals that Polly is about to turn 18, at which time she will inherit a fabulous diamond necklace called the “Ice Garden.” She’s planning a madcap birthday party and inviting all her pals. However, with a friend like Susan Stuyvesant-Fish, she doesn’t need any enemies.

Meanwhile, Polly’s new boyfriend, Buck Wayne, wouldn’t miss the birthday bash for anything, even if he has to land his private plane on the lawn of the polo grounds.

But there’s trouble ahead! Mobsters are planning to grab the necklace. But thanks to Polly, they’re defeated in uproarious fashion.

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Only one thing is certain about the ongoing controversy surrounding Garfield County Road 106 as it passes through Colorado Rocky Mountain School outside Carbondale — there will be at least two more meetings before the county commissioners decide what the future of the historic right of way is to look like.

Those meetings will be a May 14 “walk-through” of the campus by the county commissioners, county staff and others taking part in the debate over the old roadway, and a second meeting on May 18 that at least one county commissioner hopes will be the last time the county has to deal with this issue.

“I’m tired of this, and I don’t want it coming back before us again in a year or two,” said Commissioner Mike Samson at a meeting about the road dispute on May 4 in Glenwood Springs.

At that meeting, the commissioners heard nearly two and a half hours of testimony from different quarters in the dispute, including representatives of the school interested in limiting public travel on the right of way as much as possible, neighbors from the unincorporated

neighborhood of Satank to the north and others, who are just as interested in keeping the right-of-way open to use by as many members of the public as want to use it.

“When it comes to a trail through the campus, we feel like we need to be on record that the school opposes any trail improvements or signage that would draw attention to the existence of the right of way,” said Joe White, finance director for the school, at the meeting.

But River Valley Ranch resident Sue Edelstein said she feels the debate surrounding CR106 amounts to “a countywide land use issue” and that she believes the school is attempting to close the road to public use in spite of a county decision to keep it open for anything but motorized vehicles.

“It appears CRMS has escalated its actions to secure and occupy the right-ofway,” she told the commissioners. “It’s almost as if they are trying to force us to trespass” onto school property, by creating a redesigned entrance at the school’s southern boundary that lies outside the old right-of-way.

The right-of-way, which dates back to the 1800s as a county road, originally connected Carbondale to the Satank community and to a historic bridge (known as the Pink Bridge) over the Roaring Fork River that lead to an intersection with CR106 page 16

Recalling being twisted around and rendered speechless as the mixer pulled her hair and her head into the machinery, unable to call for help, she said, “Here I stand by the grace of God and Jack Jones.” Jones, a longtime local who happened to walk in through the kitchen door at that moment, turned off the machine in time to prevent serious injury.

Zimney said they had to pull the blade assembly from the mixer and take her, still tangled in the blades, to the hospital to be disengaged.

Casting back in her memory, Zimney remembered, “When I started working with them (Chris and Terry), the refrigerators were in the alley with padlocks on them.”

Chris, laughing so hard he could scarcely talk, added, “We kept them open during the day, and then locked them up at night” so the food wouldn’t be stolen while the place was dark.

Ann Keller, who has been the restaurant’s celebrated baker since 1994 and is believed to be the longest-term employee of the place, also sat down to chat before being called away with an emergency question from a customer about making a certain pie.

“It’s a living entity,” she said about the restaurant and the actual and virtual family of people who have worked there. “It really is.”

Currently, the restaurant is run by the younger son of Chris and Terry, Charlie, (Zimney recalled teaching him how to chop

vegetables when he was a child, and telling him, “You’ll be making your own soup here some day”) and his partner, another Carbondale native, Jared Ettelson, 40, who grew up with Charlie and became a partner in 2009.

“I’m about six months older than the restaurant,” Ettelson mused with a grin, recalling that his first working experience was when, at 16, he got a job washing dishes there.

“It was kind of a rite of passage for us kids,” he said, noting that many of his high school friends did the same thing.

Prior to joining the Smithy, Ettelson said, he worked for a Texas-based Italian restaurant chain, helping to establish 11 “stores” in Colorado before leaving nearly a decade ago, experience which he said has served him well in his current role.

Charlie’s older brother, Eric, also has done work at the restaurant, but instead of working in the kitchen or waiting tables he was the maintenance man — a task he continues at Charlie’s other local business, the Bonfire coffee house, Chris said.

After another long-time customer stopped at the table and told Terry and Chris, “You both are such a blessing to the community,” Chris teared up again and emphasized, “We’re blessed, so blessed. It just went so fast. I can’t believe it’s been 40 years.”

Looking around the busy restaurant at one point, he said softly, “It wasn’t work. It was a labor of love.”

CR106 om page 15 State Highway 82. Prior to construction of Highway 133, it was the primary route for automotive traffic traveling between Glenwood Springs and Carbondale.

The school, founded in 1953, was built on both sides of CR106, but the road stayed open to motorized traffic for more than two decades.

The road was closed to motorized traffic in 1979 at the request of the school, which made the request based on claims that the security of the students and teachers is jeopardized by having a road cut through the campus.

The county agreed, but kept the public right of way as a route for pedestrian and bicycle traffic between Satank, Carbondale and roads leading either up into Thompson Creek or toward Glenwood Springs.

The school offered to build an alternate route between Satank and Highway 133, known as Dolores Way, which became the Satank neighborhood’s only vehicular link to the outside world when the Pink Bridge was declared unsafe and closed to auto traffic in the late 1980s.

The current dispute began essentially last year, when the county, for the second time, rejected a CRMS request to vacate the road and turn the underlying land back over to the school for its use. The first unsuccessful request had been made four years earlier.

At the May 4 meeting, two of the three commissioners — Samson and board chair John Martin — appeared disposed to keep things as they are, retaining the easement

and perhaps make it a formal foot and bicycle trail with signs and other improvements, as has been requested by Satank residents and others.

Commissioner Tom Jankovsky, however, appeared to be leaning toward the school’s view of the issue, maintaining that any resolution should be a compromise.

tank resident Teresa Salvadore, who compared the CRMS situation to another noted private prep school, Philip Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, which she said has “an open campus” that is bisected by three roads.

“It can be done,” she said. “There are ways (to) guard their campus” without closing CR106.

“When it comes to a trail through the campus, we feel like we need to be on record that the school opposes any trail improvements or signage that would draw attention to the existence of the right-of-way.”

– Joe White, CRMS finance director “It has to go both ways,” he said, referring to a need to satisfy the desires of both the school and the general public.

Again, it was Samson who most strongly expressed a preference to keep the right-ofway in place, saying, “The people have the right to that right-of-way, and not to be hassled or anything else.”

Samson also noted that, while he sympathized with the school’s claims that the matter is a question of the security and safety of the students and the staff, he questioned whether those claims justified the closing of the road to public use.

Samson indicated that he agreed with Sa-

“I don’t see any terrible imminent threat because people are allowed through the present, preserved right-of-way, that would be an inherent danger” to the school, Samson said.

He also expressed disappointment at being told that the school had made no move to sit down with its neighbors and talk things over after last year’s decision to retain the right of way, despite direction from the BOCC that such talks must take place.

On May 14, the three commissioners will meet at CRMS with representatives of the school, any members of the public that show up and some county staff members, to walk

along the right-of-way.

As part of their deliberations, the commissioners have said they will consider a proposal to narrow the right-of-way as it passes through the campus, which currently is approximately 60-feet wide.

The commissioners also will walk the entire length of the right-of-way, inspecting work done at both the northern end and the southern end of the route.

To date, that work has included the rerouting of the historic southern entrance from CR106 onto school grounds, and installation of a two-rail wooden fence and the foundation for a new school sign, installations that the commissioners and county staff say are located in the right-of-way itself.

At the northern end, where the right-ofway meets Dolores Way, the school has erected a large, earthen berm on part of the old rightof-way, which school officials have said was needed to prevent headlights from shining into the windows of nearby school housing.

Critics, however, maintain that the work at both ends of the right-of-way actually is part of the school’s efforts to close off public use of the right-of-way despite the county’s support of continued public use.

The commissioners asked about having the right-of-way marked by stakes, to aid in determining where the route is now and how it might be modified.

Engineer Yancy Nichol of Sopris Engineering, who was at the table with CRMS representative Joe White, said he has a current survey of the road right-of-way, and that the road can be staked out prior to the May 14 meeting.

Rallying for Nepal Photos and text by Jane Bachrach They came bearing food, gifts and love for earthquake victims in Nepal. On their faces they wore smiles and tears. They expressed joy, sadness and hope. Dozens of volunteers donated their time and energy to put together a fund-raiser last Sunday at Sustainable Settings that drew an estimated 700 people throughout the day. Organizers Tammy Girardot and Dawn Dexter got the ball rolling late last month in an effort that quickly gained momentum and drew in more than 70 volunteers. Eaden and Dava Shantay of True Nature Healing Arts provided a Moroccan tent and alters to use as a sacred space. As of Wednesday afternoon, more than $38,000 had been raised with more coming in. Note: Weather forecasts in Carbondale last Sunday called for rain storms, but the day at Sustainable Settings stayed dry. Wyly Annex opens Wallace/Casebeer show Sopris Sun Staff Report The Wyly Art Center opens a show featuring photographer Andrea Wallace and sculptor Doug Casebeer at its Annex in downtown Basalt from 5 to 7 p.m. on May 8. The show continues through May 30. Wallace and Casebeer are both directors at the Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snowmass Village.

Wallace’s work features large 30x40-inch digital archival photographs, printed by Singer Editions, and are part of a larger body of work titled “Fraternal.”

Wallace received her MFA from the University of Colorado-Boulder. She exhibits nationally and internationally with numerous shows throughout the Americas, Europe, China and the Middle East.

“My research is informed by issues surrounding the relationship between individuals and the construction of identity,” Wallace said in a press release. “I am interested in intersections: child and adult, women and men, the dualities of living, success and failure. Ultimately, I am interested in how we as human beings experience ourselves, how we define ourselves and are defined by our relationships with each other. Storytelling and narrative are central to my work. The power and impor-

tance of the oral, written, and visual story lies at the heart of culture. I am drawn to the power of the narrative to seduce, influence and transform. My portraits speak to the physical and psychological spaces that we inhabit simultaneously. They are a documentation of a personal journey, but one that is universal to human experience.”

Casebeer Doug Casebeer’s work feature sculptures of dwellings made from metal and painted wood on ceramic bases. The pieces deal with the relationships between the ideas of storage, shelter and nourishment. He has served as pottery consultant to the United Nations and the German government. He has been involved in outreach programs in rural Jamaican schools, given technical support and assistance to Nepali potters, and advised art centers in Chile and Hawaii. In 2009, Casebeer was elected to the International Academy of Ceramics in Geneva, Switzerland and was a featured artist at the Chinese Academy of Fine Art in Beijing.

Getting relief supplies to earthquake epicenter Tarps in great demand

By Hamilton Pevec Special to The Sopris Sun POKHARA, Nepal — We gathered on April 29 at the Blue Sky Paragliding company headquarters in Pokhara, Nepal to load four Jeeps with relief supplies and get organized. We loaded 120 kilograms of rice, 25 liters of fuel, 10 tarps, 10 blankets 15 boxes of water, shovels and picks in our truck and more in the other three. We worked with Karma Flights because they had already established a relay distribution station to make sure supplies got into the right hands. The paragliding companies have all leapt in to help.

Our group of Nepalese, French, Canadian, British and Americans hit the road feeling optimistic and slightly apprehensive as roads are bad and it’s raining. We began to fishtail, something wrong with the steering. A quick roadside fix put us back on the highway. In Mugline we bought more blankets. The traffic was thick; everyone drove too fast. As we crested a small hill the gears would not engage.

I jumped out and saw the back right wheel was sticking out 1.5 feet, just barely on the truck. A few small cars passed us, but the big busses and trucks could not. A mechanic arrived in two minutes, and in 15 minutes the new part was installed, the wheel back on. During this time an angry German film crew criticized us on our poor choice of places to break down.

We got on the village road, a 4x4 mud bath, as it got dark. It was a grueling four hours. We arrived at the supply relay station about 10:30 p.m., set up the tarps just in time for a torrential down pour. The French being French, brought some fancy stinky cheese and fresh homemade bread.

We picnicked in the rain as we discussed the distribution strategy for the next day.

The earth shook and Micole, the Nepali independent-aide worker, reassured me that is was just the landslides.

professional relief groups. But Karma Flights had been there for five days and slowly figured out a system. The only doctors on site were four foreigners who happened to be in Nepal, two left that day.

By 10 a.m., 200 villagers were at the supply station, many having come a few times already. Villagers were sneaking around the ropes just grabbing whatever they could, kids were pulling up stakes from the tents of the aid workers, I saw another villager roll up the tarp we slept on and pack it away very quickly.

It was clear they wanted the tarps more than anything else. Everyone was sleeping in shelters, even if their homes still stood.

They would not sleep alone, in some cases five to seven families would all be sleeping in one shelter, for fear of being alone.

Because the destroyed villages are on the mountainsides, they cannot be reached by the aid workers directly, adding to the already extreme challenge of trying to help everyone fairly. One local guy, Sanjay, offered to take me to his village, just 30 minutes walking uphill.

“Everything is broken, all houses destroyed” he told me. On the way we passed over a damaged suspension bridge and crossed three landslides.

Nine out of ten houses I saw on the way were collapsed.

Gunchoktar Village was devastated. Sanjay took me to his ruined house. “My sister in law was killed here. I ran away, that why I am alive.”

He explained to me most of the village animals were killed as well. “They will begin to stink and this very bad,” he continued. “We put all our dead family and villagers in one hole, we burn them later when we can get them down the hill.”

When I returned to the supply station, hundreds of people waited. Many vehicles, buses, trucks, relief workers, media, many people were coming into the area making a bad road worse. At a landslide there was a bus that would not pass because the road was too narrow and the cliff side was weak; twenty vehicles waited to pass. Only one guy was digging, so we mobilized and got more people involved. I saw two military guys just watching and yelled at them in Nepali. They hustled and got to work. At least one did. When I asked why the other wasn’t working, he pointed to his gun. We had eight people push this bus pass, it began to slide towards the cliff and just barely made it by a few inches and a lot of good karma.

April 30 At dawn the rain continued to pour. The relay station was set up 100 meters from a massive landslide that blocked one of the remote access roads. The villagers started showing up around 6 a.m. They walked down from the steep mountainside villages that have been cut off. I could see the slide areas all around us.

The issues with distribution became quite obvious: people wanting more than their share, families sending different people to collect, people fighting over supplies and how they should be distributed. None of the groups, like us, at this location were

A few times it made me think, “Everyone is telling me to be safe, but trying to help at all is unsafe.” When we got back to Pokhara I saw my camera bag was missing. My heart sunk. “This can’t be happening.” All of my batteries, my lenses, my SD cards, gone, and with them any chance to continue the coverage of this disaster. But I had my camera around my neck and a single battery. Thank God. We cannot open a Nepali bank account here. The government has taken all the new bank accounts that were opened since April 25 to lend to their own efforts. It’s pretty sad, actually and a sign of how this

will go for the next few years. It makes me feel like our efforts are now that much more important.
