AHA bullies home owner Dear Editor: It is with dismay and disbelief that the Aspen Pitkin County Housing Authority (APCHA) continues to bully Burlingame home-owner Lee Mulcahy in an attempted forced sale of his home by refusing to review his records of employment compliance. In a request to District Court Judge Chris Seldin, APCHA, hiding behind clever lawyers while manipulating administrative agency rules, quickly moves for Summary Judgment against Lee (representing himself) without trial or even a hearing.

APCHA continues to ignore the fact that Lee was at his father’s bedside and subsequent funeral in Texas when the agency inquiries were sent regarding his employment compliance. After his father’s death, Lee went to Kenya to take his dad’s place in a charitable community cause. APCHA admits they knew Lee’s father had died and that he was out of the country when a final notice was sent and a deadline due.

After returning to Aspen, Lee’s efforts to show compliance with his work as an artist and other employment fell on deaf ears.

APCHA, bent on pursuing deadline technicalities, refused to review Lee’s documented compliance.

APCHA’s heartless move came, coincidentally, within weeks of Lee finally obtaining his Certificate of Occupancy (March 1, 2016)

after years of him physically constructing his own home and jumping through ridiculous hoops of agency demands. APCHA now pursues what appears to be an opportunity to snap up a gorgeous home built upon a family’s blood, sweat and tears.

It is outrageous to think how easily an administrative agency in Aspen can take advantage of the system in an attempt to force a contributing member of the Aspen community out of his home. Lee’s deep commitment and civic involvement to the Aspen community is unsurpassed. My family and friends have known Lee for over 20 years and can attest to his impeccable character, integrity, loyalty and deep sense of community and charitable involvement.

Shame on APCHA for resorting to such over reaching and heavy handedness. It is hoped that through public awareness and appeal, other community members will speak up against this punitive treatment and support Lee’s efforts to show APCHA that he is in compliance. That is all he is asking.

Housing hits tipping point This letter was addressed to the Carbondale Board of Trustees.

Dear Editor: Obviously the issue of affordable housing in our town has hit the tipping point. Frosty

Merriott’s notion that as long as someone “has a job” he or she can afford to live here is no longer true. Buffered by billionaires, with second and third home owners driving prices up at an alarmingly familiar rate, we can all agree that Carbondale has gone to the lapdogs. Following in the footsteps of Aspen and Basalt, we’ll soon have empty homes and businesses while our families, friends and co-workers are forced to live farther and farther away.

But you can stop it. There are progressive measures we, as a community, can take to ensure that Carbondale stays affordable. Bernie Sanders introduced Burlington, Vermont to the idea of community land trusts in the 1980s and to this day the city’s housing market is stable and affordable. Another option would be tiny-home parks in equal ratios to golf course subdivisions, i.e., housing for teachers, firefighters and welders alongside the bankers, lawyers and hospital administration staff members.

No offense to the part-time residents, but we all know that the artisans, tradesmen and civil servants are the heart and soul of this community; if we really want Carbondale to stay vibrant, let’s work together and get ’er done.

No more ‘cah-cah’ for local arts organization

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer Some time around the last full weekend of July, in conjunction with the 2016 Carbondale Mountain Fair, close observers of signs and that sort of thing may notice something different about how the Carbondale Council on the Arts and Humanities (CCAH) identifies itself in marketing and other formats.

Starting at about that time, according to Amy Kimberly, executive director of what is now vocally referred to as “cah-cah” in local shorthand parlance, will be changing its name to Carbondale Arts (CA, or “cah”).

Why? “It’s because we wanted to be ‘cah,’ we didn’t want to be ‘cah-cah’ anymore,” Kimberly joked during an interview on Monday, making a sly reference to the somewhat earthy vocalization of the organization’s original acronym.

Actually, she said, “It’s really just to simplify,” noting that the organization’s Website has been www.carbondalearts.com “forever,” or at least since the organization (founded in 1974) put up its first Website as an aid to its marketing efforts.

The name change comes at a time when the organization is closing in on formal recognition as one of the half-dozen or so Creative Districts around Western Colorado, under Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper’s ongoing Colorado Creative Industries initiative.

Kimberly and her army of volunteers have

been working on the Carbondale Creative District (CCD) effort for about four years, starting after CCAH won a Governor Arts Award in 2012 under a program run by the Creative Industries agency.

Using a combination of local and state grants, as well as some money from CCAH’s own $450,000 annual budget, the group has been granted the right to use the “creative district” nomenclature, even though formal certification of the CCD has yet to come through.

As reported in the April 22 Sopris Sun, the CCD has already gotten to work on its first big community project, creation of an Artwalk along the Rio Grande bicycling and pedestrian trail that bisects Carbondale, featuring sculpture, a Latino-themed garden and other cultural amenities as part of an effort to beautify the trail and use it as a cultural touchstone for the town.

Thanks to the relocation of the Carbondale Branch Library to its new building at the corner of Third Street and Sopris Avenue, Carbondale Arts has a new home at The Launch Pad (the former Gordon Cooper Library space, named after the astronaut whose mother lived here), at the corner of Fourth Street and Garfield Avenue. The building is shared between CCAH/CA and The Dance Initiative, a local dance education and performance group.

And next week the CCAH/CA will play host to a Creative Industries Summit, scheduled for May 4-6 at different sites around town.

New logo coming Kimberly said the official declaration of the new name, along with a new logo that is still being designed, is planned for this summer’s Mountain Fair in Sopris Park at the center of town.

Not much else will be different, Kimberly said, in terms of the programs that CCAH has been running for decades, ranging from the annual Mountain Fair (which falls on the last full weekend of July) to such programs as the Creative Classroom after-school program, classes in drawing, yoga and a host of other pastimes, the Green Is The New Black spring fashion show and other cultural events.

The broader arts programming, she said, will continue under the auspices of the member-elected board of directors that has been at the heart of the CCAH organization for decades.

Separate board A separate governing board, probably appointed by the established CCAH board, will oversee the Creative District’s operations and programming, and the district will have its own Website (with a link to the CCAH/CA site).

Kimberly said that the work on the Creative District has brought a slight increase in the arts council budget in recent years, taking it from its normal $450,000 level to something closer to $500,000 this year.

But in general, she said, the inclusion of the Creative District organization under the CCAH/CA banner will not mean a big boost in the budgets of the two groups, mainly because “most of the District’s budget will be project-based.”

By that Kimberly meant that much of the CD’s budget will consist of “hard costs” for building or placing signs, art installations and other actual stuff.

Meanwhile, she said, much of the “soft-cost” expenses such as administration will be taken care of by her and the CCAH/CA staff.

“We feel as though we’ve already been doing the work for the last four years,” Kimberly quipped. “The day-today running of the district we can handle in our office.”

Already, she said, some of the salaries paid to her and her co-workers have been divvied-up between work done for the CD and work done for CCAH/CA. Kimberly said that in the next few months she, the other CCAH/CA employees and the board will be working on CD issues, and added that if any local citizens feel the need to talk about the changes they should step up and do so.

“This is the time period when, if people want to make comments, they should,” she declared.

Critics accuse BLM of “backpedaling” on TD leases

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer Activists opposed to gas drilling in the Thompson Divide and other areas in the White River National Forest were happy when the U.S. Bureau of Land Management announced in February that it wanted to cancel 25 controversial leases issued in 1993 and afterward, following months of analysis of claims that the leases were issued illegally.

But some, such as the Wilderness Workshop in Carbondale, maintain that the BLM’s decision does not go far enough in protecting remote terrain from road building and drilling, specifically in the cases of 40 remaining leases included in the BLM analysis.

The analysis, under a Draft Environmental Impact Statement, dealt with 65 leases in the Thompson Divide and westward, based on the outcome of a federal lawsuit by conservation organizations that determined the leases were issued without the required level of environmental analysis under the federal National Environmental Policy Act, or NEPA. The Thompson Divide, roughly 220,000 acres of untrammeled wild terrain between Sunlight Mountain Resort and McClure Pass, has been at the heart of a controversy for more than six years. The dispute has pitted drilling opponents including some area towns (such as Glenwood Springs and Car-

bondale), Pitkin County and environmental organizations, against Garfield County, supporters of the oil and gas industry and industry officials, all of whom staunchly maintain that the industry has the right to drill based on the issuance of the leases.

After reviewing the matter, the BLM last November announced a “proposed action” under which the agency would cancel 18 of the leases in the Thompson Divide, and add restrictions to seven others in the same area, for a total of 25 leases in an area that has become a political hot potato.

In addition, the November announcement indicated there would be a number of restrictions attached to the remaining 40 leases to the west of the Thompson Divide itself, which also were part of the reanalysis, that would offer some protections from drilling in those areas.

Those 40 leases are located in terrain to the north and west of the Crystal River and North Fork River drainages, touching on the Mamm Creek drainage further to the north and west, the DeBeque Canyon area and the region covered by the Grand Mesa/Uncompahgre/Gunnison national forests, known as GMUG. But in February, the BLM changed direction and announced a new “preliminary preferred alternative” for dealing with the leases, under which it would be canceling the 25 leases outright in the Thompson DiTD LEASES page 14

Ready … set … go (to the restroom) Sopris Sun Staff Report Public restrooms at the town's parks and athletic fields are all “open and ready for the season,” wrote Town Manager Jay Harrington on April 22 in his weekly memo to the Board of Trustees and other recipients.

And, he wrote, the streets crew has placed a bicycle rack on Main Street, continues to install signs on the bike and pedestrian trails through town, and generally is getting things ready for summer.

The town's parks department is working on pump stations and irrigation systems in preparation for the season, in addition to its weekly trash and dog-waste pickups and other duties, and a contractor has performed pressure-testing on a new irrigation system at Thompson Park to ensure that all is working properly, Harrington reported.

He wrote that town officials were scheduled to conduct a “walk-through inspection” of Thompson Park at the beginning of this week, and that hydro-seeding of the park was due to be done last Saturday.

At the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center (CRCC), this was to be the final week of a six-week climbing program with local home-schooled kids, Harrington wrote. Other continuing pro-

grams include the preschool program, “Motion Mondays,” which will continue through the summer, with “Water Fun Days” scheduled on June 13, July 18 and Aug. 15.

An American Red Cross lifeguarding class has been scheduled for May 11-15, the memo continued, noting that participants must be 15 years old by the end of the class in order to take part. There also will be June 15-19 session of lifeguard training. Registration can be done online for the lifeguard classes and other aquatics programs over the summer, and questions should be directed to Margaret Donnelly at mdonnelly@carbondaleco.net.

The first Quinceanera celebration of the summer season is scheduled for April 30, according to Harrington, who wrote that 350-400 people are expected to attend a private, invitation-only event from 4 to 10:30 p.m., which will feature a band, food and alcohol. A security team will be on hand, and any questions concerning the event should be directed to town staff or the security personnel.

The Gateway RV Park will open on May 1, Harrington indicated, and the returning campground hosts will be Bill and Kathy Kirkland, and Tim and Cheryl Heng.

habilitate the announcer's booth at the Gus Darien Riding Arena along Catherine Store Road have moved forward, with completion by the SGM consulting engineer of a draft of the permit applications required by Garfield County. The application will go before the county planning and zoning commission at some point soon, and if approved will be the green light for the work at the arena. (Editor’s note: Construction will not start until after the rodeo season).

Carbondale's planning staff recently held a pre-application meeting with the development team of the Sopris Lodge LLC, a proposed senior-housing project along the north side of the Rio Grande Trail near North 2nd Street.

Harrington reported that Carbondale Police Officer Luke Blue last week performed CPR on an apparent heart-attack victim in the River Valley Ranch subdivision, and that the officer's quick action “was a factor in the victim's survival,” according to the staff at the Carbondale fire house.

The town ditches are all running, but a problem at a pump station on Weant Boulevard necessitated shutting down the main section of ditches going through town for what was estimated as three days of repair work.

Catch the Summit DeTour Sopris Sun Staff Report “DeTour is a statewide music touring program that connects artists and communities in a more holistic and sustainable way,” said Jesse Elliott, one of the creators of Colorado Creative Industries’ DeTour project.

A “Tiny DeTour” is coming to Carbondale May 5-6 as a part of the Colorado Creative Industries Summit.

DeTour launched last fall with a month-long tour around the whole state featuring the Denver-based Flobots as the headlining band. They traveled to all four corners of the state, stopping in many off the beaten track places like Rangely and Cortez. DeTour’s goal is to bring music to places it doesn’t often go, and to bring it with the community in mind. While DeTour musicians, entertainers and attractions do put on shows, they also stay up to three days, hosting creative workshops in schools and community centers, drawing the music out of the people they are visiting.

The theme of “Tiny” was chosen for this tour in an effort to emphasize sustainability and humility, and to examine the idea that everyone doing small things can make for big change. The TinyDetour is only making three stops this year: Colorado Springs, Buena Vista and Carbondale. The headliners include the band Chimney Choir, poet Laura Goldhammer, and Davey B. Gravey’s Tiny Cinema. Also along for the ride are other “tiny” centric attractions such as Treklite and Meep Records.

In Carbondale, a tiny art show will join the caravan in Alleghany Meadows’ Artstream trailer. All of this and probably more will be set up as a Tiny Village on the corner of 4th and Main streets. There will be scheduled events such as a Tiny Rhythms workshop at Steve’s Guitars at 6 p.m. on May 5, and the grand culmination concert at Thunder River Theater at 7 p.m. on May 6. There will be other events and workshops at the village itself.

A full schedule is available on a Facebook page called “Tiny Detour Carbondale” and on posters around town.

The DeTour has found many partners in Carbondale who said they are thrilled to support the program’s efforts including: Cool Brick Studios, CCAH, LET THEM ROAR, Steve’s Guitars and the Thunder River Theater Company, as well as many individuals who are making donations through CCAH. The DeTour depends on financial support from the communities they visit as they offer all of their events for free to everyone. “I’m thrilled that Carbondale is not only on the Tiny DeTour, but it is its last stop,” said LET THEM ROAR vocalist Olivia Pevec.

EverGreen snags national attention Representatives from the local SCRAPS community compost collections program recently returned from the annual Bio-Cycle conference in San Diego and here’s one thing they learned. “ … our diversion rate per household is on par with mandated programs throughout the nation due to our mission to educate and inspire our community about proper composting,” said EverGreen Zero Waste owner Alyssa Reindel in a press release. EverGreen Zero Waste is the exclusive hauler for the voluntary SCRAPS food waste collections program that operates in Aspen and Pitkin County. “We collect an average 12,000 pounds per week, taking all materials to Pitkin County’s certified facility for processing into soil amendment,” Reindel continued. In a related note, EverGreen ZeroWaste will give away free compost at the April 30 Waste Diversion Day across the street from Carbondale Town Hall (bring your own container).

KDNK wins another Murrow KDNK has won an Edward R. Murrow award from the Radio Television Digital News Association in its Region 3 Small Market category, according to a press release. The Carbondale-based public access radio station competed against stations in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. The winning entry (from Sept. 29, 2015) features all three voices of the KDNK news team: anchor Steve Cole, reporter Amy Hadden Marsh and news director January Jones. “The newscast is a well-rounded look at what we prioritize at KDNK, which is en-

gaging people on issues in the public sphere by connecting people to their government.” The Sept.

29 show covers local government happenings from KDNK’s listening area, and features a soundrich and moving story about the BLM’s roundup of the West Douglas mustangs in northwestern Colorado. KDNK runs local news segments between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m., and from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. Archived daily newscasts and stories are available at kdnk.org. Francisco Nevarez-Burgueño: Teaching dance and so much more

School. After just three weeks in the kitchen, he was offered a part-time job as a resource coordinator for the Family Resource Center, and then as a school district community liaison for the Basalt schools.

When Francisco Nevarez-Burgueño, director of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Folklórico, first meets with his five- and sixyear-old beginning dancers, he tells them to clap. After their typically subdued clapping he tells them, “No, no, no ... really clap! LOUD!” Once they clap to his satisfaction, Nevarez then shows these budding dancers how to make that same resounding sound with their feet.

What he loves most about teaching Mexican folk dancing, Nevarez told The Sopris Sun in an interview earlier this month, are “the faces of the kids when they learn how capable they are to move their bodies and stomp their feet and do it with strength and confidence.”

At the Colorado Creative Industries (CCI) Summit in Carbondale on May 5-6, Nevarez (or Paco, as most people call him) will be awarded a Governor’s Creative Leadership Award for his work with folklórico. According to the CCI website, three such awards are presented each year to “community members that have demonstrated a significant commitment to Colorado’s creative landscape through civic leadership and volunteerism ...”.

More than anything else, Nevarez said, dancing folklórico builds kids’ self-esteem.

First place In 2006 Nevarez brought his group to a folklórico competition in Las Vegas. They won first place overall, competing against over 70 groups from the U.S. and Mexico. As exciting as this experience was for his group of dancers, Nevarez didn’t enjoy seeing how sad all the other kids were when they learned that they did not win. At that point, he decided to focus on performances rather than competitions.

Nevarez has taken dancers to perform in Denver, Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Chicago and Mexico. A couple years ago his group had the opportunity to work side-by-side with kids from a dance company in Harlem that performs traditional African dances. His group is currently planning a trip to Costa Rica to perform and participate in an international folk- dance festival, including workshops to learn dances from around the world.

While kids can participate in the Aspen Santa Fe Folklórico program free of charge (aside from a $25 annual registration fee), the kids not only have to work hard in dance class, they also have to work hard in school to be able to stay in the program. Nevarez makes sure that every student is getting good grades and behaving well at school, or they cannot continue to dance. ASFB recently hired an educational advisor to help kids in the dance program succeed in school and prepare them for college.

For the Anglo students, the program gives them an opportunity “to embrace other cultures … and be part of this melting pot.”

El callado Although one would never guess it today, as a young child, Nevarez’s family nicknamed him el callado: “the quiet one.” He was very shy, kept mostly to himself, was bullied by other kids, and was typically chosen last for sports teams “when I was chosen at all,” he said. All that changed as he began to dance.

In Mexico, almost every school—even the poorest of schools—from kindergarten through college has a folklórico dance group. “It’s part of our culture,” Nevarez said.

Teacher certification programs for elementary and middle school teachers include training for teaching folklórico. Almost every school festivity or event includes a folklórico presentation by some of the students.

Nevarez was first selected to dance in his school’s folklórico program when he was five years old. He was born in Chihuahua, Mexico in 1963. The middle child of five, he was raised by a single mother. With no extra money to spend

By middle school he began dancing with a folklórico group outside of school, two hours a day, Monday through Friday, plus a full weekend day when they were preparing for a performance or competition. He danced with this group through high school and college, learning all he could about choreography, lighting and costume-making as well.

New York

Nevarez graduated college with a degree in chemical engineering, worked for three years as a chemical engineer, then moved to New York City in 1991 with the goal of learning English and earning a master’s degree in that field. He planned to return to Mexico after receiving his graduate degree.

When he first arrived in New York, Nevarez took a job as a packer in a warehouse, and he was miserable.

“I came from Mexico where I was a chemical engineer with 30 people working under me,” he related, “then to spend my day packaging in a warehouse …”. He also discovered the cost of graduate school in the United States, and realized that his plan of getting a master’s degree was not feasible.

He decided to stay in the U.S. at least until he learned English and enrolled in free English classes in a school run by the Ladies Garment Workers’ Union (LGWU). In 1992 the school organized a “Cultural Week,” including a talentshow competition. Nevarez’s fellow English-learner students — who came from all over Latin America — convinced him to teach them some folklórico dances for the competition.

Their group won first place at the Cultural Week. His classmates enjoyed learning and performing the dances so much that they convinced Nevarez to continue as their

dance teacher. His teaching slowly evolved into starting his own dance company, Mexican Images and Traditions. The LGWU allowed him to use empty space in their building free of charge for rehearsals. Nevarez created the choreography, taught the dances, performed along with the group, and in 1996 started a children’s company as well. In 2001 his company was nominated as one of the best folklórico companies in the U.S. and was selected to compete in the Chicago National folklórico competition.

Nevarez’s work as director of Mexican Images and Traditions was completely volunteer. Any profits the dance company made from performances were invested right back into the company to create more costumes. In August 2002, his dance company was invited to perform at New York City’s Lincoln Center outdoor festival for members of the United Nations and the Mexican Embassy. At this performance, the Mexican Embassy presented Nevarez with an award for his work creating this highly regarded dance company.

Getting to the valley Shortly before the Lincoln Center performance, Nevarez was contacted by Aspen Santa Fe Ballet (ASFB) about interviewing for the position of director of the ASFB Folklórico program. As he drove to Aspen from Denver for his initial interview, the views of the landscape convinced him that he would move to Colorado if he were offered the job.

When Nevarez took over as director of ASFB Folklórico, it had existed for two years already and included a total of about 25 girls and one boy. Nevarez has grown the program each

Work and rewards The Folklórico students and their parents describe Nevarez as very demanding and strict. Creating the costumes The elaborate and vibrantly colored costumes “are as much a part of the dance as the music or the steps or the choreography,” explained Roaring Fork High School junior Tavia Teitler, who has been dancing with Folklórico since she was in kindergarten. “There is a specific costume and a specific style of dance for each region [of Mexico] that we do dances from.”

Nevarez sews the costumes himself with volunteer assistance from parents and grandparents, as well as Nevarez’s mother and sister who come from Mexico to help each year. According to Faith Magill, Tavia’s grandmother who has assisted with this activity for the past 10 years, Nevarez and his helpers spend about four months creating costumes for each spring recital.

Nevarez learned how to make costumes by watching others — the costume-makers in his folklórico group in Mexico, then the retired members of the LGWU who volunteered to create costumes for his first performances in New York.

He typically travels to Mexico once or twice a year to visit family and attend conferences, and returns with a carload of materials. He has converted the garage of his Carbondale home into a costume workshop, including five sewing machines. The one rack of costumes he received when he took his position in 2002 has grown into a room of approximately 400 square feet completely filled with racks of clothing, towers of hats and containers full of fabric.

Nevarez is a strong believer in “using what is already here in this world,” as he described it. He makes slips out of donated bed sheets. New costumes are often refashioned from previous years’ costumes. He once made 24 new costumes out of a set of purple curtains from an ASFB performance of “Romeo and Juliet.” The curtains were discarded and headed for the landfill when Nevarez “rescued” them.

“For the Mexican community, this program teaches the kids what their parents or grandparents used to do in Mexico ... something very important to the culture in Mexico.” For the Anglo students, the program gives them an opportunity “to embrace other cultures … and be part of this melting pot.” Nevarez said he loves to see Anglo and Latino kids learning these dances together, “building bridges and relationships and friendships.”

Work and rewards The Folklórico students and their parents describe Nevarez as very demanding and strict. Creating the costumes The elaborate and vibrantly colored costumes “are as much a part of the dance as the music or the steps or the choreography,” explained Roaring Fork High School junior Tavia Teitler, who has been dancing with Folklórico since she was in kindergarten. “There is a specific costume and a specific style of dance for each region [of Mexico] that we do dances from.”

Nevarez sews the costumes himself with volunteer assistance from parents and grandparents, as well as Nevarez’s mother and sister who come from Mexico to help each year. According to Faith Magill, Tavia’s grandmother who has assisted with this activity for the past 10 years, Nevarez and his helpers spend about four months creating costumes for each spring recital.

Nevarez learned how to make costumes by watching others — the costume-makers in his folklórico group in Mexico, then the retired members of the LGWU who volunteered to create costumes for his first performances in New York.

He typically travels to Mexico once or twice a year to visit family and attend conferences, and returns with a carload of materials. He has converted the garage of his Carbondale home into a costume workshop, including five sewing machines. The one rack of costumes he received when he took his position in 2002 has grown into a room of approximately 400 square feet completely filled with racks of clothing, towers of hats and containers full of fabric.

Nevarez is a strong believer in “using what is already here in this world,” as he described it. He makes slips out of donated bed sheets. New costumes are often refashioned from previous years’ costumes. He once made 24 new costumes out of a set of purple curtains from an ASFB performance of “Romeo and Juliet.” The curtains were discarded and headed for the landfill when Nevarez “rescued” them.

CCAH show brings dispersed locals back home Sprick, Bowlby, Tonozzi, Kemp

By Nicolette Toussaint Sopris Sun Contributor The exhibit opening in the R2 Gallery at the Launchpad on April 29 is the brainchild of sculptor Greg Tonozzi, a native-born local who has been known to refer to himself as Tonto Rigatoni Tonozzi. (Really! It’s on his website).

Entitled “Renascence,” the exhibition is presented by the Carbondale Council for Arts and Humanities (CCAH) and it pairs Tonozzi’s marble works with realist painters Daniel Sprick, Dean Bowlby and Andrea Kemp. That’s a gathering of Tonto’s whole band. All four artists have local roots, and all are connected to Tonozzi.

Tonozzi has for years lived in Marble. Sprick, a Glenwood Springs native, now lives in Denver. Bowlby was born on the Western Slope and lives in Silt. Kemp, who was born in Glenwood, is Tonozzi’s cousin. Mentored by Sprick, she now lives in Golden.

Carbondale artist Staci Dickerson, the show’s curator, notes that all four are from this area and that Sprick and Bowlby have been painting together for years. “Historically, I think Dan Sprick was first to make the decision to become a fine-art painter, and he made a commitment to that,” Dickerson noted. “You have to paint for 10,000 hours to cross that threshold. Later, Dean Bowlby joined him.”

Dickerson added, “Andrea Kemp showed promise when she was in high school here, and Dan Sprick agreed to mentor her. It was hard work for her. He’s very disciplined about media, materials and process.”

Today, Sprick is recognized as one of the nation’s finest contemporary-realist painters. He produces meticulously executed portraits and figurative compositions; his muted palettes and sense of stillness encourage slow contemplation. Sprick’s works have been exhibited at the Denver Art Museum and in the Colorado State Capitol. Dickerson said, “I have seen some of his paintings in the Denver Art Museum, and there were a couple portraits that I think I could study for the rest of my life and learn from. There’s so much to them: technique, mystery, story — all things that make them really powerful.”

Western Colorado native Dean Bowlby is well known in the Roaring Fork Valley, thanks in part to his representation by the Main Street Gallery & the Framer in downtown Carbondale. His works can also be found in public and private collections in the United States, Japan and Europe. This painting is titled “Blue Vase.”

Andrea T. Kemp’s career has been building for at least the past 15 years. Her most recent solo show was at Saks Galleries in Denver in 2012. Galleries to include Kemp in group shows include: Gallery 1261 (in 2015); Principle Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia (2013); the Curtis R. Harley Gallery at the Upstate University of South Carolina (2012) and the Madden Museum in Denver (2011).

Dean Bowlby Dean Bowlby grew up in Glenwood Springs and studied art at Regis University in Denver, but has stated, “College wasn’t art to me. Artistically, better advice was to be found at Leo Langley’s barbershop for the price of a haircut! I was fortunate in an early friendship with a very talented artist named Daniel. He gave me the training in classical thought I had been looking for, though it had been largely ignored by modernism.

Bowlby’s subject matter ranges from local scenes to European vistas and to intimate interiors where people gather.

Bowlby, too, is considered one of America’s foremost realist painters: his works grace public and private collections in the United States, Japan and Europe.

Kemp, who is now in her thirties, is, in Dickerson’s words, “making it in the art world.” Best known for her figurative work, Kemp has earned an extensive list of awards and honors, has shown work in both group and solo exhibitions and has garnered features in prominent art magazines.

She teaches in the U.S. and abroad. Kemp’s paintings convey a visual poetry and express avid curiosity about the world.

Greg Tonozzi Tonozzi is a somewhat eccentric artist who tends to ignore phone calls and e-mails in favor of spending time in his outdoor workshop. Blogger Russ Green visited Marble in 2014 and described Tonozzi’s yard/workshop this way: “…scattered about were chisels, files, power tools – the tools of the artist –

Dickerson says that the show’s sculptures are carved from marble procured from the Yule Quarries above the town of Marble. “When the miners up there come across a vein they can’t use — they want pure white marble — Greg is the first one they call,” she explained. “He has a relationship with the Italians who run the quarry; you know, he’s Italian too. They have come across a vein of marble that has gold and copper in it, and it turns shades of emerald green. That’s in the show.”

Straight from the CCAH Website: “A Colorado artist working in marble and granite stone, Greg has been highly influenced by the shape of potato chips. His search has carried him to the islands of Hawaii where sliced and fried potatoes are thought to be an art of both culinary and ascetic value. Tonozzi is influenced by Paul Gaugin, another sculptor who liked the very same brand of potato chips. He can be found grinding away on stone at his studio/home in Marble, Colorado.”

vide, provide protection from development for 13 of the contested 40 leases, and reaffirm the validity of 27 others further west from the Divide.

“It’s not a final decision,” remarked David Boyd, spokesman for the BLM, but it is meant to give local governments, the industry and anyone other interested parties an idea about “where we are headed” in writing up the Final EIS due out in later summer, when it will be open for public study and comment.

Criticism But some, while welcoming the announcement that 25 leases would be canceled, have criticized the BLM for not carrying through with protections for the bulk of the remaining leases outlined in the November announcement.

“These lands [containing the 40 leases] are some of the last, best places in Western Colorado,” said Peter Hart, an attorney who works with Wilderness Workshop. “They deserve to be protected, too.”

Focusing on the November “proposed action,” Hart maintained that the BLM at one time has promised such protection, which he said is similar to the protection provide to “roadless area,” or areas where there are no actual roads built through the woods.

“We think that the roadless rule is incorporated into the lease terms,” under the BLM’s own regulations, Hart said.

In deciding to wipe the slate clean concerning the 25 Thompson Divide leases, but to simply reaffirm the 27 others, means “They didn’t treat all of the leases the same,” he said.

At the very least, Hart said, Wilderness Workshop and others want the BLM “to make it very clear that the roadless rule applies” to those remaining leases.

Another attorney working on the issue, Mike Freedman of the Earthjustice office in Denver, agreed that the 40 leases “cover lands that are really just as important as the Thompson Divide leases, and he accused the BLM of having “backpedalled in a big way” with its February announcement.

If the “preferred alternative” is adopted as proposed, Freedman said, “It’s really leaving half of their job unfinished. You’ve got pristine areas without any development or roads … [that] are now going to be opened for development.”

The Town of Carbondale, which has actively worked against allowing drilling in the Thompson Divide, was pleased by the announcement of the “preferred alternative” and the cancellation of the 25 leases, said Mayor Stacey Bernot.

And while the town’s trustees are aware of the debate concerning the remainder of the 65 leases covered in the analysis, she said, it has “not formally” taken a position either for or against added protections for leases that will not be canceled.

“Our strategy has been, let’s stay close to home,” Bernot explained, meaning the town does not want to “dilute” its concentration on drilling in an area that would have immediate impacts on Carbondale’s clean water and air, its traffic and other variables.

“The long-term preservation of Thompson Divide is Carbondale’s main goal,” in that preventing drilling will prevent pollution, congestion from truck traffic and other industrial problems.

BLM spokesman Boyd, after stressing that the BLM continues to study the potential impacts of drilling on the 40 leases that would not be canceled, confirmed that the “proposed action” plan did contain greater protection for some of those leases than the current “preferred alternative.”

Basically, he said, the proposed-action plan would have applied the same type of protection as did a 2014 US Forest Service Environmental Impact Study of the region, which called for NSO (no surface occupancy, meaning no roads or pads) for much of the affected area.

But, Boyd said, not all of the terrain in the 40 acres is actually roadless, and 27 of the leases are “held by production,” meaning they have produced oil and gas in the past and are “part of a developed area. That wasn’t an area that would be closed to future leasing” under the USFS plan.

“We’re trying to find an alternative that strikes a balance” between the desires of the industry and the demands of environmentalists and other forest conservationists, Boyd said.

Earlier this month, Mary celebrated her 100th birthday quietly with a few family members and friends. Last Tuesday, April 26, attended by those loving friends, Mary Lilly died peacefully at her Carbondale home following a brief illness.

Mary Crouch was born in San Diego to Iva and Charles Crouch on April 7, 1916. She grew up in southern California and moved to Pasadena where, while studying art in 1936, she met and married John C. Lilly. The following year, son John Lilly Jr. was born. A year later the Lilly family moved to New Hampshire where Mary continued her art studies while raising  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Johnnyâ&#x20AC;?. Soon, a second son arrived, Charles â&#x20AC;&#x153;Charlieâ&#x20AC;? Lilly, who would become Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s devoted companion for much of their lives.

In 1942, the family traveled westward to explore skiing and rafting in Colorado. On the Crystal River, they befriended John and Anne Holden, fellow easterners looking for a new life out west where they would later found Colorado Rocky Mountain School (CRMS) with funding assistance from the Lilly family, and construction labor provided

by John Jr. Both Johnny and Charlie would be among the ďŹ rst students at CRMS. Mary and John lived in Philadelphia for a time, and then moved to Washington, D.C. in 1954. Dr. Lillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work and growing fame as a research scientist soon took a toll on the marriage, however, and he and Mary were divorced in 1958.

Mary resumed her studies, earning an advanced degree in art from American University. She taught at the prestigious Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland and toured Europe with her students.

In 1971, Mary and son Charles returned to Carbondale and bought into the Four Pines Ranch on Nettle Creek (south of Carbondale), growing heirloom apples and boarding farm animals. Three decades later, in 1999, mother and son left the ranch to assist the ailing Dr. Lilly in his retirement in Hawaii.

In 2001, Dr. Lilly fell ill and died. Mary and Charles stayed in Hawaii through that winter, and in the spring of 2002 Charles suddenly became ill and passed away.

Mary returned to Carbondale where, aided by surviving son John Jr., she bought the house in west Carbondale where she lived out her life in constant contact with her many friends. She resumed her active participation in numerous Carbondale institutions, including the library, the Methodist Church, and the Carbondale Historical Society. But shortly
