Why McElwee is running Dear Editor: My name is Gary McElwee and I am running for the board of directors of the Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District on the May 6 ballot.

I care about Carbondale Fire but do not like the direction the department has gone the past few years. I feel as though the current board of directors is out of touch with the taxpayers they were elected to represent.

At a time when the rest of us have had to make hard economic choices due to the recession, Carbondale Fire has steadily increased revenue and expenses for the past nine years.

In 2011 the board asked for and got a 2.233 mill levy increase with a two-year sunset. When this 2.233 levy was due to expire at the end of last year, the board then asked for another, increase of 3.902 mills on last Novembers ballot to be added to the existing increase, bringing the new rate to 12.038 mills in perpetuity. Had it not been voted down, that would have been a 100 percent increase in the mill levy rate from 2010.

What was the fire district going to do to decrease expenses since the 2011 levy increase, knowing that property values would be lower thus significantly reducing tax dollars to the district?

I read in a recent newspaper interview that we can again expect the question for a mill levy increase, with some sort of sunset clause, as early as this November. There has been no explanation of district finances from the board to help us make an informed decision warranting any mill levy increase. A tax increase should be a last resort after taking a hard look at the budget and asking what can be done to reduce expenses before asking the taxpayers for more money. Fire departments all across the country have had to do this because of the recession.

Our current board has not come up with the solutions to balance quality emergency services with reduced revenues. I believe it is time for new people to step up to effect change.

I believe I can better represent the taxpayers of the Carbondale Fire District and bring better fiscal responsibility to the organization while still maintaining the quality of services the people of this district have a right to expect.

I would appreciate your consideration and vote.

Why Smith is running Dear Editor: I have announced my candidacy for the Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District (CRFPD) Board of Directors May 6 mail ballot election.

I served as a chief officer of the Fire District and retired in 2010. I now serve as a vol-

unteer firefighter and EMT on the CRFPD. My wife and I have lived in the Crystal Valley for 11 years and have lived in the area for over 20 years.

I have three basic foundations for my candidacy. Those foundational beliefs are as follows.

First, I have dedicated my professional life to both developing and maintaining quality fire and emergency medical services. I have served as a chief officer and EMT on Carbondale, Glenwood Springs and Aurora fire departments. I would work diligently to maintain quality services, including the paramedic ambulance service on the CFD. Secondly, I have significant local, state and national experience and education. I have been appointed by Gov. Hickenlooper as well as the Garfield County commissioners to work on local, regional and state issues.

Finally, and of equal importance, I am pragmatic about spending taxpayers money.

I believe in realistic and practical uses of “your” tax money. During my professional career, I have consistently developed master plans and effective budgets that respected the taxpayer. The difference between my approach on budgeting and the current CFD budget that is posted on the website is the difference between an objectives-based budget as opposed to the current basic financial spreadsheet. Change the C&RFPD directors Dear Editor: After the failed mill levy election last fall, Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District Fire Chief Ron Leach stated “the community’s fire department is going to be devastated.”

The failed mill increase precipitated a 40 percent deficit of the fire district budget because of property value/tax decreases — $1.2 million cut for our paramedic ambulance/fire/rescue services, initial attack wildfire teams, training programs and the well developed all-risk incident management type III team of local responders.

I have served our community fire district for 30 years in a wide variety of positions and responsibilities and for many different Fire District board members here, as has Chief Leach.

For 32+ years Leach has honorably led the way with foresight, leadership, education, program development and with a steady constant set of goals to improve the quality of essential emergency service for our families, businesses, ranchers, miners, visitors, and backcountry adventurers. Chief Leach has, with a wonderful volunteer force, supported by a paid staff, provided us all a better quality of life.

Yeah, we are going through tough economical times since 2008. Expectations of the Fire District Board by community were set by the currently seated board members in their campaign platform promise of Oct 2011, and I quote: “This two year mill levy override buys us a little time to see what the economy is going to do, and make an appropriate master plan for the fire district that looks at both capital and operating needs and is responsible to the economy realities we face going forward.”

Without a promised master plan of economic balance and fiscally responsible explanations, the community members, owners of the fire district if you will, and voters said no more money without your promises being kept.

In my opinion this current fire board’s directors have got the fire chief’s back against the wall, which is forcing him and our community’s 60 years worth of investments to take critically severe actions to stay afloat.

I promote proactive board members not reactive. Times are changing in the world and at home. It is time to change the directors of the C&RFPD. New energy with fresh ideas.

Culture Club thanks Dear Editor: Carbondale Culture Club celebrates it’s first anniversary in April. It is with deep heartfelt gratitude to all the presenters and musicians that shared their talent, creativity and wisdom with our community that I say “THANK YOU.” We collectively contribute to the vibrancy and vitality of this town as we weave our connections with each other revealing how and where we grow and thrive in this unique place. There has always been a wealth of artistic, environmental and intellectual resources in this valley and I am so honored to have had the opportunity to channel some of this abundance into the one-hour presentations at Third Street Center in the Calaway Room.

My goal, along with the suggestion and guidance of Jody Ensign, former executive director of the Third Street Center, was to create a lunch hour venue to bring the non-profits together at Third Street and draw the community in at the same time. This goal was nurtured in part by my vision to generate funds completing the loan for the Third Street Grand Piano that I started in August 2012.

Fire district explains what happened with plan John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent As Carbondale voters prepare to cast ballots in the Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District board election later this month, one issue that has remained of concern for some voters since late in 2013 is the lack of a current fire district master plan for operations and expenditures.

The election is being conducted by mail, with ballots to be sent out between April 14 and 21, and to be counted on Election Day, May 6.

The ongoing election pits three incumbent members of the district’s board of directors — board chair Gene Schilling and directors Mike Kennedy and Mark Chain — against two challengers, former district employee and current volunteer Carl Smith, and former volunteer Gary McElwee.

The challengers have argued that the current board has lost touch with the roughly 15,000 residents of the 320-square mile district.

As if to confirm that charge, the district’s voters last year rejected a proposed tax hike that would have put the district’s revenues at more than $3 million, by canceling out revenue losses due to the 2008 recession and the accompanying plunge in property values that slashed property tax proceeds.

The incumbents, on the other hand, have said they are responding to the wishes of those same voters and have embarked on a planning process that ultimately could yield a new master plan for the district and

other recommendations from a special task force committee created earlier this year.

The district encompasses the Crystal River Valley and the communities of Carbondale, Redstone, Marble and portions of Missouri Heights, as well as the area around the intersection of Colorado Highway 82 and Garfield County Road 114, known as the CMC Road.

District Fire Chief Ron Leach, along with Schilling and Kennedy, said during an interview on Tuesday that it is likely that the district will produce a new master plan to replace one crafted in 2004.

That 10-year-old master plan, Leach said, is due to expire this year, and it predicted with some accuracy that by 2014 the district would have more than doubled its budget over the 10 years of the plan.

The district’s budget had grown from approximately $1.1 million in revenues and $1.4 million in expenses in 2004 (prior to a tax hike and bond issue approved by the voters that year) to approximately $3.3 million in revenues and $2.8 million in expenses estimated for 2013.

As the budget has expanded, according to a graph provided by Kennedy, the district’s calls for service have risen from 972 in 2004 to 1,250 in 2013. Thanks to the 2004 tax hike and bond issue, the district has ramped up its emergency medical service level from basic Emergency Medical Technicians in a district-operated ambulance, to full paramedic-level personnel, and built a new fire station/training facility next to the old Station No. 1 fire house.

Costly paramedics It is the paramedic-level service, district officials have said, that has been the costliest change in the district’s expenses over the years, a change that district official say was demanded by the voters. The district now boasts paramedic-level ambulance crews on duty and ready to respond to alarms, 24 hours a day.

“This is all about the ambulance service,” Leach said of the questions about the district’s budget growth that have been raised by some voters and board candidates.

Following the voters’ rejection of last year’s proposed tax hike, the district’s revenues have fallen to an estimated $1.9 million in revenues and an estimated $2.5 million in expenses for 2014. The district cut about $500,000 in expenses and dipped into its reserves to the tune of $700,000 in order to maintain the level of services that existed in 2013.

Kennedy told The Sopris Sun on Tuesday that the district had begun discussing revision of the old master plan about two years ago, but had suspended the effort.

“Frankly, with the economy where it was, and nobody really knowing where we were going in terms of revenues, we decided to hold off,” Kennedy explained. “We decided, rather than plan into the future with unknown revenues, to concentrate on maintaining the level of services that we had.”

And following the electoral defeat last year, which grew out of voter unhappiness over the permanent nature of the tax hike as well as the lack of a master plan, Kennedy said the board of directors felt that “the committee was a better idea” than embarking on a master planning effort that Leach estimated would have cost tens of thousands of dollars that the board felt it did not have for that purpose.

Any master plan update, said Leach and Kennedy, will depend on a recommendation from the task force.

Leach currently is working on a comparative analysis detailing wages and benefits paid to Carbondale fire district employees, as compared to the wages and salaries paid to employees of other nearby districts. He expects that analysis to be completed by about June, in time for a meeting of the task force committee scheduled to discuss the issues surrounding the district’s personnel costs.

According to a list provided by Leach, the district currently is budgeted to pay more than $1.2 million in salaries for 18 paid employees this year, including the chief’s annual wage of nearly $115,000, a salary of more than $90,000 for the district’s fire marshal, C’DALE FIRE page 9

Bob Olenick cheers family and friends on First Friday Nobody saw this coming until they did. Then they planned to e-mail the photo to Olenick, who until last week was in rehab in Denver recovering from the paralyzing Guillain-Barre Syndrome (an autoimmune disorder) that struck him in January. Just as the photo shoot was winding down, who should come walking into Sopris Park in one of his signature Hawaiian shirts, escorted by his daughter Megan, but Bob Olenick himself? From that unexpected moment on, it was all smiles, handshakes, hugs and pats on the back as more than 200 friends welcomed the Red Rock Diner owner back home — a week ahead of schedule.

1932-2014 LoEva “Eve” Luttrell, 81, of Meadow Lakes, Texas passed from this life on March 30, 2014. She was born to Joe and Texana (Whitman) Silcox on Sept. 22, 1932 in New Caney, Texas.

Eve was a member of the United Methodist Church of Carbondale, Colorado, Friday Night Friends of Kingsland and a Red Cross volunteer.

She was a crossword puzzle player extraordinaire, avid reader and home designer. She loved gardening and flowers and was a loyal watcher of “The Days of Our Lives” soap opera from the very beginning of the series.

She was married to the late Lt. Col. James H. Luttrell on April 20, 1956. Jim was the love of Eve’s life. They shared the next 20 years LoEva “Eve” Luttrell moving from state to state, living the life of a career Air Force family.

Eve’s primary job was raising her children. Wherever they moved, Eve would create a beautiful and loving home. When Jim retired, the family moved to Carbondale, Colorado where they made a life for 25 years. Eve longed to return to her roots in Texas and in 1999 she fulfilled her dream to return home, moving with Jim to Kingsland, Texas.

Survivors include her sons, Robert Luttrell of Marble Falls, Texas, Paul Luttrell of Carbondale, Colorado, son and daughter-in-law Mark (Maureen) Luttrell of Carbondale, Colorado; daughter and sonin-law Sue and Homer Williams of Granite Shoals, Texas; grandchildren Dan (Brandi) Luttrell, Adam Infascelli and Aaron Luttrell; great grand-daughter Mackenzie “Mac” Luttrell; and sister and brotherin-law Geraldine and Marven Chance. Eve was loved by numerous nephews and nieces.

A Celebration of Eve’s life was scheduled for the Lighthouse Country Club, 118 Club Circle, Kingsland, Texas on April 6, 2014 at 2 p.m. An online guest register may be signed at www.PutnamCares.com.

Cremation arrangements were made by Putnam Funeral Home in Kingsland, Texas.

1938-2014 James Henry Schauster, 75, of Carbondale, Colorado passed away on April 1, 2014. James was born on Nov. 25, 1938 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado to Henry and Jewell Schauster.

Jim was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. He never knew a stranger. If you were around him five minJames Henry Schauster utes you felt like an old friend. Jim’s favorite thing was to spend time with his family at the cabin in the great outdoors. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to share those activities with those he cared about the most.

Jim was always up for an adventure, enjoyed life and embraced whatever came his way.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years Jean Schauster; his mother Jewell; sons Mike, Alan (Stacy) and Tom (Vickie) Schauster; and grandchildren Randy, Natalie, Jenna and Lauren Schauster. He is preceded in death by his father Henry Schauster and brother Leroy Schauster.

A memorial service was scheduled for April 7 at 11 a.m. at the Carbondale Fire House in Carbondale, Colorado.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jim’s name to the Calaway-Young Cancer Center at Valley View Hospital.

Paddywacks expands, ready for economic upswing Grand re-opening April 12-19

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Writer For R.J. Paddywacks owner Eric Berry, a recent purchase was a telltale indication the local economy is finally headed in the right direction.

“A man bought a dog-cooling jacket,” Berry told The Sopris Sun on Tuesday.

“Usually, that’s something people buy in July … but people now have the money to look ahead. That wasn’t happening a few years ago.”

R.J. Paddywacks Pet Outfitter has sold pet supplies in Orchard Plaza in El Jebel since 1996 and a year before that in the Mid-Valley Design Center. Berry enjoyed a few years of ups (financially and emotionally), followed by downs that started during the nationwide recession of 2008-2009. Just keeping his doors open proved difficult until the last year or so. Berry said if he put his sales on a graph,

2008-2012 was “a perfectly flat line.”

During those years, Berry faced a “lucky to get a salary kind of thing” and took a cut in pay. His wife Sara, who is an English as a second language teacher at Colorado Mountain College, helped at the store.

Surviving the bad years, the future started looking brighter for at least a couple of reasons. First, fueled by the return of “worker bees” last year that once again have jobs and more money to spend, Berry’s sales graph started pointing north. When Paddywacks’ next door neighbor went out of business in 2013, Berry immediately knew he wanted the space to expand his product line and to also help the store’s “shopability.”

After putting together a “huge” business plan, U.S. Bank “opened the door” with a loan and Berry’s expansion plans began. He eventually doubled the size of his original 1,200-square-foot store, which once again has open aisles and the return of actual shopping carts.

“We get thousands of pounds a week,” he explained. “And now we have a fork lift and pallet jacks.”

Berry, who lives just outside Carbondale on Highway 133, is especially proud of the livestock feed and not just for economic reasons.

He said when Hyrup’s feed store in El Jebel closed 18 months ago, he contacted long-time owner Steve Hyrup. Hyrup didn’t have any inventory to sell to Berry, but he did have a list of suppliers he was willing

to share.

“He (Hyrup) was tickled” someone would want to keep selling feed.

“It (selling feed) is a legacy in this part of the valley’s culture … it’s something that needs to be supported.”

As for other improvements and additions at R.J. Paddywacks, the number of fish tanks has been increased to 16 and products have been added to all the store’s lines. As anyone who has shopped at R.J. Paddywacks knows, Berry and long-time employee Dave Gardner like to have fun with their customers. Now that the store has twice as much space and more product selections, “ .. it’s an experience going into R.J. Paddywacks.”

True Nature Healing Arts offers tea and tranquility

By Sue Coyle Sopris Sun Correspondent The Roaring Fork Valley has more than its share of yoga studios, but True Nature Healing Arts has taken the concept a big step further.

Tucked unobtrusively into the curve at Colorado Avenue and Third Street, the True Nature building, which formerly housed architects’ offices, has been transformed to realize the vision of owners Eaden and Deva Shantay. Although there will eventually be two entrances to the building, for now the main entrance is in the back, via the parking area. As this reporter waited to speak with Eaden and Deva, I sat at the long wooden table that is the centerpiece of the communal Tea Room and took in the details of the room’s tranquil atmosphere. The walls are painted a soft yellow and adorned with a variety of Buddhist art. Subdued, indirect lighting, soft music and the faint sound of a water fountain all combine to soothe and relax.

“We’ve been in the healing arts for a long time,” said Eaden. “For us, it’s a sanctuary.

It’s our temple.”

So, what is offered in this “sanctuary,”

besides a feeling of tranquility? Upstairs, a variety of yoga classes are held seven days a week. Kerry Kleisner is a yoga instructor and also the marketing director for True Nature. “I feel healed by this space,” she said, referring to the peaceful Tea Room.

And of course there is tea — many varieties of seasonal, organic, loose-leafed tea, brewed personally for each customer and served in individual lead-free teapots. I sampled a white tea known as “Monkey Pick.”

Despite the name, it was delicious. Deva believes that “tea has healing properties.” She added, “We want to support people in the community, and the ceremony of tea gives you time to connect and be with others.” The kitchen also serves up tisanes, chocolates and fresh, raw juices and smoothies.

Another offering at True Nature is its Petit Spa, featuring body treatments ranging from facials and massages to craniosacral therapy and “hot stone enhancement.” Treatments are conducted indoors in one of the two treatment rooms, or in a private outdoor treatment space during the warmer months.

But the piece de resistance of True Nature is still a work in progress. Between the

building and the Rio Grande trail lays a tract of land that is being transformed into gardens and an outdoor spiritual place of healing. It is called the Peace Garden, and according to Kleisner, it will be the Shantays’ “gift to the community.”

Rob and Ginger Janssen of Basalt Mountain Gardens, and Laura Kirk of DHM Design, are credited by the Shantays for bringing their vision to reality. “They [the designers and builders] are going to create this wonderland out there that will be spiritual and healing, and beautiful and welcoming for the whole community,” said Deva.

The garden will contain an outdoor yoga spiral that can accommodate 30 people at a time. The spiraling walk will lead to a labyrinth, and a fire circle is surrounded by curved, earthen cob couches designed by Laura Bartels.

The garden will also feature True Nature’s Five Elements Reflexology Path, consisting of small, soft stones to walk on barefoot. Along the path will be five alcoves where one can pause and meditate. A small creek flows along the back of the property, and the Shantays plan to build a “grand en-

Eaden said, “Already there has been so much gratitude flowing from the community.

We want people to feel like this [the Peace Garden] is theirs.”

The yoga studios, Petit Spa and Tea Room are all open now. Work on the garden will continue throughout the summer and the grand opening weekend is scheduled for Sept. 5-7.

Heritage garden takes C’dale back to the future

By Sue Gray Sopris Sun Correspondent Not long ago, everywhere in the world, people planted much of their own food from seed saved by successive generations of family members. Favorite seeds traveled with immigrants and spread around the globe. These heirloom varieties adapted to the conditions where they were grown, and the vegetables were vibrant, flavorful, colorful, and rich in nutrients.

In America, from the first pilgrims to the pioneers, home vegetable gardening was essential to feeding the family.

But by the mid 1900’s, many people were moving out of rural areas into cities and suburbs, where there wasn’t room for a garden. During WWII when women began working, they didn’t have time to grow vegetables at home, and grocery stores started to fill the need for fresh produce.

Meanwhile, modern farming practices and a nationwide transportation system

gave rise to large-scale commercial agriculture. In food-science labs, vegetable varieties were crossbred to create hybrids that were resistant to disease, produced abundantly, and could withstand long-distance travel. In the process, much of the flavor and nutritional value were lost. But something even more crucial was lost: over 75 percent of global seed varieties have vanished over the last century.

It gets worse. You see, hybrids don’t breed well.

There’s no point saving the seed and planting it next year because hybrids produce offspring with traits that are all over the place, unlike heirlooms which produce plants exactly like the parents. So if you want to grow that Early Girl hybrid tomato again this year, you have to buy seeds provided by the agricultural conglomerate Monsanto. Then there is the rise in genetically modified (GMO) crops, with their associated risks and unknowns.

RFHS boosting its Advanced Placement offerings

Since starting as principal of Roaring Fork High School in 2012, one of Drew Adams’ primary goals has been to enhance the rigor of every student’s educational experience at RFHS. As part of that effort, three new Advanced Placement (AP) courses were added to the curriculum this past school year, and three additional AP courses will be offered next fall.

Advanced Placement is a program created by a non-profit organization, The College Board, which designs the curriculum, and creates and grades the final exam for each AP course. Most colleges grant credit to students who receive a high score on the final AP Exam.

Roaring Fork is offering the following AP courses for the 2014-15 school year: Calculus, Literature, Spanish, Art, World History, and US Government & Politics.

“It’s about building the opportunity for kids to have a college experience while they’re still in high school,” Adams told The Sopris Sun. According to Adams, AP courses help students develop the skills they need to succeed in college.

Taking AP courses can also save a significant amount on college tuition costs. Most colleges offer about three college credits for each AP Exam on which a student receives a high score. Scoring well on the AP Spanish Exam is even more significant: Colorado University offers 11 credits to students receiving a top score on the AP Spanish Exam.

The school also offers a host of collegelevel courses, some within the high school and some at the CMC campus: cultural anthropology, biology, English composition, business, environmental science, political science and the politics of sustainability. According to RFHS college counselor Andrea Caruso, credit in these courses transfers to

In addition to preparing students for college-level work and potentially saving money on students’ college costs, AP and college courses provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their willingness to challenge themselves which, according to Caruso, is essential for students hoping to be accepted into a selective college.

About one third of all RFHS students recently attended an information session about next fall’s AP offerings. According to AP World History teacher Matt Wells, some students jumped at the opportunity to take his AP class this year and other students

mands a much greater amount of reading and requires a more sophisticated level of historical, analytical and evaluative thinking, writing and discussing. Since AP courses are nationally-normed, Wells explained, he is forced to keep up the pace throughout the year.

Even if history is not a student’s main interest, Wells said, his course helps to “prepare kids for college as thinkers, enabling them to tackle complex problems regardless of what the subject is.” During one of his classes last month, students were divided into groups representing different countries involved in World War I and were asked to present that country’s demands and perspectives as they simulated the negotiations leading up to the Treaty of Versailles.

AP Art is equally rigorous. In place of an

exam, students are required to submit an extensive portfolio including 12 pieces that demonstrate the “breadth” of a student’s skills (i.e., a wide variety of mediums) and 12 pieces that are connected by a personal theme. Students must also submit a written paper explaining how his or her theme evolved throughout the year.

AP Art teacher Cathleen McCourt explained that the AP course has really pushed her students to work hard and advance their artistic and critical thinking skills. Her AP students are required to create many more finished pieces of art than is required in a typical high school art class. They also must learn how to put together a portfolio and develop their skills at giving and receiving critical feedback on each others’ work. In addition, McCourt noted that the course has enhanced her students’ thinking about themselves as artists as they conceptualize the evolving theme underlying some of their work.

“Requiring students to develop a theme for a series of pieces is a very mature concept,” McCourt said, and one which she plans on using in other art classes as well.

The themes that her AP students developed this year include: ebb & flow, innocence gone, natural magic, and my relationship with water.

“Not everyone in high school is ready for college level courses,” Caruso said, “but we want to have them available for all the students who are ready to take on that kind of challenge.”

Mother Nature is now turning really mean on us

By Patrick Hunter Sopris Sun Columnist You can’t fool Mother Nature! That’s the message of the IPCC — the International Panel on Climate Change. Essentially, they pulled together more than 1,000 peer reviewed research papers on the climate and the results of climate change and the conclusion is that things are worse than they thought. Mother Nature must be a “mean mother” because she is handing out some “tough love.” If you thought we had some big storms over the last few years, you haven’t seen anything yet.

But it’s not just the weather. The “natural world,” as we like to call it, is changing rapidly. More hot days reduce the growth of crops like corn. The yield in quantity per acre is decreasing. Corn and corn-based products are increasing in price, for this and other reasons. Things like tortillas are becoming too expensive for many people. The price of beef, fattened on corn, will increase. Big agriculture companies and university labs are looking for temperature and drought resistant strains of corn and our other crops.

A more subtle change is the decline in monarch butterflies. Part of the problem is a lack of milkweed that is a prime source of food for migrating monarchs. Farmers have increased the acreage devoted to crops by plowing up prairie and draining wetlands. But the change in temperature changes the timing of the interaction of the plants and their pollinators. The milkweed counts on the monarchs to arrive at the time their flowers are blooming. But now they bloom sooner and the monarchs arrive too late. The monarchs can’t get the nutrients they need for their journey, and the plants don’t reproduce. The impacts of this failure affect a host of other plants and animals that are intimately connected.

In our Colorado Mountain College sustainability courses we are currently looking at the interface of man and nature.

Sustainability has its roots in the environmental movement,

which comes from a renewed understanding and appreciation of what we call the natural world. The misunderstanding is that there are two different worlds: one occupied by plants and critters; and ours, the world of humans. We have things to eat, and pets and all our technology. It is hard to see the connection between an iPhone full of apps and a tree full of apples. When we look at the little screen we don’t get

It is really difficult to comprehend just how precarious the biosphere really is. Carl Sagan used the example of wrapping saran wrap around a basketball. The saran wrap is our living world. That is the thickness of the outside of our atmosphere to the bottom of our topsoil.

The last ice age ended about 12,000 years ago. Temperatures were far colder and the flora and fauna were different in many ways. One of the geologic results of melting ice caps was the rise of sea level. There was a great deal more land exposed and people were living at a sea level that is now deep underwater. In the Middle East the sea level around the Mediterranean and the Black Sea would have risen quickly. While the Black Sea drains into the Mediterranean, they both flow through very narrow straights. Effectively, they were dammed. The Epic of Gilgamesh dates to about the 18th century B.C. It contains stories of the

Garden of Eden and Noah and the flood that are repeated in Genesis in the Bible. The Epic came from the “Fertile Crescent” that reached from the Mediterranean to the Persian Gulf.

The movie epic “Noah” is now at the theaters. From a scientific point of view the decision by God to exterminate all humans except Noah and his family, and all plants and animals save what could be put on the Ark, makes no sense.

According to Genesis, God created Adam and Eve and immediately discovered a basic design flaw. Like General Motors, he chose to do nothing and let the chips fall where they may. (Chip off the old block?) Finally, God had had enough and so he created the flood; and Noah was given a fresh start. Not long after the flood subsided, vineyards were grown and wine made. Noah had a yen for the vino and his sons found him passed out in the tent; naked. You can look it up.

God’s mistake was he did not change the basic operating system of his humans. Noah and his group had the same DNA as the original concept cars. Therefore “human nature” was unchanged and here we are again. James Baldwin wrote a novel called “The Fire Next Time.” I read it in the 60’s and I always wondered about that. So our biosphere is burning up.

I don’t believe there is a Mother Nature. I don’t believe there is a design in nature. It just is. Somebody tossed a chemistry set on earth and here we are. The sun drives the process. Species come and go. We like to think there is a “balance” or “equilibrium.” There is not; instead it is constant change. Usually the changes happen so slowly we don’t notice. According to the IPCC — that is about to change.

Thanks to Tim, Gavin Dear Editor: On Monday evening I parked my car at the Carbondale park and ride on Highway 133. As I got out of my car I dropped my cell phone but didn’t see where it landed.

After searching the surrounding area next

to my car and unable to find it I borrowed a phone and called my cell. The ring tone was coming from what I call the drain gutter directly in front of my parked car.

OK. So what do I do now?

I called the water department assuming I would get a recording but the on-call person answered. I explained the situation, also assuming I would have to wait until the next day or perhaps have RFTA help me out. Instead I was told that they could take care of it right away.

About 10 minutes later at 9:30 p.m. I

met Tim and Gavin, two young men who work for the Carbondale Water Department at the park and ride and within minutes they had pried open the lid and crawled through to retrieve my fortunately dry cell phone.

I attempted to tip Gavin and Tim but they assured me it wasn’t necessary and against the rules. So I just want to give another hearty thanks to Tim and Gavin and recommend that these two fine fellows get a big, fat raise. They are awesome!

The prize, awarded every two years, is the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance among America’s community colleges and recognizes institutions for exceptional student outcomes in four areas: student learning, certificate and degree completion, employment and earnings, and high levels of access and success for minority and lowincome students.

The Aspen Institute identified the top 150 community colleges through an assessment of institutional performance, im-

provement, and equity on student retention and completion measures. Together, the 150 community colleges eligible to compete for the prize represent the diversity and richness of the entire sector: • They are located in 37 states across the nation; • They represent urban, rural, and suburban markets; • They encompass big community colleges and small community colleges — from Miami Dade College in Florida serving over 100,000 students to Carver Career Center in West Virginia serving fewer than 500 students.

The four-foot by ďŹ fteen-foot plot features a raised bed built with used lumber and hardware from Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore. A fence and mailbox at the west end simulates the look of a typical pioneer home garden.

The bed was planted with heirloom ower and vegetable varieties that might have been grown in this area a hundred years ago, using methods that were in practice at the time. For instance, Ital-

ian heirloom tomatoes and beets represent immigrants that came to this area to work in the mines. Some varieties are “long time locals.â€? The walking-onions were passed down from Mary Ferguson’s family who were some of this area’s ďŹ rst white settlers.

Visitors to the garden can take a self-tour with the information booklet provided in the mailbox. Guided group tours can be arranged for schools, garden clubs, history buffs, or any other interested parties.

The intention behind the MSHS Heritage Garden project is to show some of this valley’s pioneer history, while helping today’s home gardener choose vegetables that grow well in our climate and soil conditions, and will produce seed they can replant year after year.

If the experts are right, and a food-pocalypse is on the horizon, our future may depend on the home gardener’s ability to grow vegetables with seed collected from their own plants, just like in the past.
