Why we opted out of standardized testing

By Lorri and Chad Knaus My husband and I come from families of public school teachers and are the products of public school education. We are proud to send our three children to Crystal River Elementary School and Carbondale Middle School. The educators in these buildings are experts in their craft, tirelessly devoted to the population these schools serve and passionate about teaching. We are honored to call many of them our friends.

Public schools across the nation are currently in the midst of their first round of standardized testing. Here in Colorado, students in grades three through 11 are using Chromebooks (or similar devices) for approximately 10 hours of online PARCC testing, which assesses an individual student’s math and reading skills.

This past week, however, our eighth grader and sixth grader did not take the standardized tests.

Our family is not anti-testing. This is the first year we have refused to take the tests and we are refusing for many reasons, a few of which we have outlined here: 1. Time. Although the administrators and teachers at Carbondale Middle School have done an exemplary job minimally impacting students with this round of testing, our family is frustrated with the amount of instructional time taken not only to administer the tests, but also the impact that testing has on the rest of the day’s/week’s schedule and instruction. This testing happens multiple times a year. We realize that this year the Roaring Fork School District is administering less testing than it has in the past, but it’s still too much.

2. Efficacy. We aren’t convinced this testing is as useful a tool as it is presented, nor are we convinced the data derived from these tests is timely, useful or pertinent.

3. National education reform. We are fearful that the testing data will continue to drive national education reform in a direc-

tion that does little to serve our nation’s public — a public that includes our low-income families, our English-language learners, or our urban neighborhoods and rural communities — and, in fact, has adverse consequences. For example, evaluating teachers and funding schools based on how well (or poorly) students perform on these tests is problematic and counterproductive.

4. Values. We are concerned this kind of data is emphasized too heavily and does not accurately encapsulate a student learner as a whole. We all stand to lose if we continue down this path.

As a family we are concerned about the direction of our nation’s public education system. We are refusing to take the PARCC and CMAS because we have a lot of unanswered questions and continue to be concerned with some of the responses provided.

We will continue to seek information and answers. We encourage you to do the same and invite you to contact us with your thoughts and questions and be part of this ongoing national conversation.

Whether it be a simple action of give and take or a layered game of win or lose, the story comes from the textures of getting where you end up.

I ponder on this now, in the afterglow of CCAH’s Green Is the New Black Fashion Extravaganza, because I cannot tell if the real

joy is in the finished production or the many journeys that happen along the way. I am still marveling over the amount of love and energy that the unsung heroes of this production put out, simply to share their creativity with a larger community, as well as contribute to the greater good like CCAH arts programming.

Singing for the unsung hero

crazy, beautiful bird and we are grateful, but it’s those you don’t see that I want to talk about. People like Ticah Burrows, who has been helping us since she was a sophomore in high school, never watching the show, but always behind the scenes getting those lovely models out on stage in a timely fashion. The designers that create for the show have put so much time into their creations it is important to have someone watching over them and that someone is Kether Axelrod! Regna Jones started a fashion show in Paonia and then moved to Carbondale. Her energy and insight take our show to another level. I think about Evan Gaspar, who works for Alchemy and whose job is to provide the sound and lights, but spends hours of his own time helping Laura Stover tweak the projections. He does it because he loves the art of it all, as well as he sees all the energy others put out for something and that commitment is catching.

Then there is Chris Erickson, who gets a great crew together and transforms the Recreation Center into a set. Jeremiah Hutchins and Brandon McDuffey jumped in this year to film cool backdrops for us, like the Rifle caves and the dancers. Sue Drinker has spent hours for the last couple of years filming and editing the show so we have fantastic documentation. There are the photographers like Mark Burrows, Jane Bachrach, Beth White and Brent Moss who capture the show and designs.

Even the bar gets great care and love as Shawn Tonozzi and Evan Cree bring their creativity and mixology as part of the picture.

Caucus grabbing Bull Mountain by the horns Concerns over drilling in Delta and Gunnison counties

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent The Crystal River Caucus is holding a special meeting on April 9, at 7 p.m. at the Church in Redstone, to talk about plans by the energy industry to drill up to 150 wells in a 20,000-acre area known as the Bull Mountain Unit on the western side of McClure Pass.

Of that total, approximately 13,000 acres of gas leases are on federal land.

The wells would be located to the north and west of Paonia Reservoir, directly west of the Raggeds Wilderness Area, according to a map published by the Western Colorado Congress (WCC), a non-profit community-organizing group that operates around the Western Slope.

The Crystal River Caucus, according to its chair, Delia Malone of Redstone, is “concerned” about many aspects of the drilling plan, which has been proposed by SG Interests of Houston, Texas, but mainly about the prospect of big trucks coming over the pass and heading north to Carbondale and beyond.

SG Interests also is one of the energy companies with natural-gas leases in the Thompson Divide, to the southwest of Carbondale, which has prompted more than five years of conflict and resistance from area towns and community groups.

“From the Caucus perspective,” Malone said, “our membership is really concerned about the heavy level of traffic … that may come down Highway 133.”

According to a summary distributed by the Citizens for a Healthy Community (CHC) in Paonia, SG Interests is planning to drill 146 new gas wells and four wastewater disposal wells, on 36 well pads.

Dee Malone That would more Crystal River Caucus than double the number chairwoman of wells in Delta and Gunnison counties, which currently number about 67.

According to CHC and WCC, the wells are to be drilled at a rate of 27 wells a year over six years, and the company plans to upgrade 53 miles of existing roads and build 16 miles of new roads, as well as eight miles of new “cross-country” pipelines and four new compressor stations.

The wells are projected to consume 744 acre-feet of fresh water, and about 1,736 acre-feet of recycled produced water. An acre-foot of water is the amount of water it would take to cover an acre of area to a depth of one foot.

The CHC group estimates that the “total cumulative water demands over the course of development is estimated at 353.6 million gallons of fresh water.”

Concerning traffic, the CHC reported in its summary that it would take up to 43,294 trips by heavy trucks to build the well pads, access roads and pipelines, and for drilling and fracking the wells once they are in place. That activity is predicted to occur over a two-year period.

That traffic, Malone noted, must travel either over McClure Pass on Highway 133, or up from Hotchkiss.

She said a math whiz she knows calculated that, based on an eight-hour work day, five days a week, that number

of truck trips amounts to a truck every six minutes.

And some of that traffic, she predicted, “will go straight through Carbondale and down to Glenwood Springs.”

While groups in the North Fork Valley have been actively publicizing the drilling plans, and holding meetings about the matter, there has been little notice in the Crystal and Roaring Fork river valleys.

But, she said, “It should raise some red flags … about the indirect impacts of this.”

She said some questions she has fielded about this include how the industrial-level of activity will affect Highway 133’s status as a Scenic Highway, and what it will mean for the tranquil, village-style atmosphere of the historic town of Redstone.

In addition, she said, there is the possibility of acci-

dents involving trucks carrying fracking water (used to break up deeply buried deposits of gas and oil) or “produced” water (which comes up from deep in the earth along with the gas and oil), both of which are known to have toxic components.

She noted that gas trucks have been known to overturn and spill their contents in western Garfield County, where considerable drilling has been under way for years.

And, she said, there was a time back in the 1980s and earlier when coal trucks occasionally did the same, as they traveled from mines in Coal Basin near Redstone to a train-loading facility outside of Carbondale, turning the Crystal River black with coal dust.

“It’s not out of the realm of possibility,” she said of such accidents, adding, “there’s a high degree of probability.”

Town sprucing up RV park Sopris Sun Staff Report As part of the town’s ongoing efforts to spruce up the Gateway RV Park, at the juncture of Highways 82 and 133, the town recently installed a new concrete ramp at the park’s bath house (in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act) and a new concrete slab for picnic tables. The street department crew also put down new three-quarter-inch gravel throughout the park in preparation for opening day on May 1.

Other preparations for the summer’s recreation season continue apace, Gustine reported, such as leveling and raking the sand volleyball courts, aerating the turf in the parks for “top dressing” and “spring overseeding,” and getting set up for a spring burning of the town’s Nature Park, which was scheduled to take place March 2427. Gustine wrote that there would be notifications posted at the park to warn users of the burn plan.

Town work crews have been cleaning out the town’s ditch system, in preparation for opening the ditch gates on April 15, and have been spreading the material pulled from the ditches along the Rio Grande Trail for later use in landscaping. The ditches provide irrigation water to numerous homes and other users during the summer and fall.

The town has received a referral from Garfield County concerning an application to rezone part of the old Sanders Ranch property (a 43-acre parcel adjacent to the Planned Unit Development known as River Edge) from residential to “commercial general.” The Planning & Zoning Commission was scheduled to take a look at the proposal at its March 26 meeting at town hall.

agency has agreed to provide $5,000 toward the cost of building an outdoor shelter at the Community Garden in Bonnie Fischer Park, located at the south end of the Third Street Center. Construction of the shelter is scheduled to begin this coming summer.

The Recreation and Community Center was scheduled to cancel climbing classes this week, which is spring break for the local schools, Gustine reported, though pickleball play was to continue on Saturday mornings on the Darien Pickleball and Tennis Courts at the North Face Park.

Also, Gustine reported, the American Red Crosssanctioned babysitting course, scheduled for March 27, had filled up as of March 20 with 10 students registered.

In other recreation news, Gustine reported that a shortage of playing fields may result in conflicts between sports programs such as the Three Rivers Little League, the Carbondale Youth Soccer league, and the Roaring Fork Lacrosse Club, all of which typically use public fields for their practice sessions and games. The Recreation Department is helping to coordinate field schedules to minimize conflicts.

Registration for the second annual Roaring Fork Beer Company’s Cornhole Tournament (a game involving the tossing of beanbags through holes cut in target platforms) is under way. The tournament is scheduled for April 11, from 5-10 p.m., and entry is $30 per team.

FRIDaY, March 13: at 12:40 p.m. police officers assisted emergency medical personnel from the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District with a call over an apparent drug overdose on N. 12th Street.

FRIDaY, March 13: at 11:46 p.m. a local citizen enlisted the help of police in trying to locate her car in the area of Main and North 3rd streets. The search was unsuccessful, and the female citizen “was not prepared to report (the matter as) a stolen car,” according to a police statement.

FRIDaY, March 13: at 11:46 p.m. officers responded to a call regarding a “possible verbal dispute,” but discovered it was a one-car collision at 7th Street and Cleveland Avenue. After speaking with the driver, police arrested her on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

SaTURDaY, March 14: at 2:58 p.m. police stopped a car at N. 7th and Main streets for an unspecified reason.

After investigating, they learned the driver was in possession of a loaded pistol and concluded he was drunk. The driver was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

SUNDaY, March 15: Police got a call regarding a juvenile who reportedly had been kidnapped and was being held against his or her will (juvenile identities are withheld from publication). Upon investigation, officers learned the matter was a prank and the juvenile was at home and safe.

The former straight shot into Colorado Rocky Mountain School will soon be a bit crooked, as the school is reconfiguring the south entrance so that it intersects with County Road 108 at a 90-degree angle. The new configuration will also consolidate the school’s Whitaker Avenue, which leads to the CRMS Barn, into the same access point as the main entrance. Garfield County Road and Bridge Director Debbie Fiscus said the county issued a driveway permit for the new access, with the stipulation that access to the county easement through the school will be maintained.

CRMS spokesman Mark Gotfredson cited safety concerns for the new access point, which will also have a calming effect on traffic entering the school.

The new configuration also means interior traffic will no longer have to get onto County Road 108 when traveling north and south.

The recent one-car St. Patrick’s Day parade on Main Street, and subsequent ad hoc procession, got some folks wondering about the event’s history. Well, Diane Kenney reports she and some CRMS people started the parade in 1985. Sue Lavin was the queen riding in the back of a truck “or maybe Don Wise’s green convertible” Kenney tells The Sun. “I walked it with our dog.” John Gorman wore shorts with shamrocks plastered all over his legs and Steve Bunell was St. Patrick. The following year, Kenney was appointed queen but Lavin showed up with fake bruises, claiming to be the “real queen.”

She was transported that year in a red truck with a giant French Foreign Legion figure made by Jim Field and Kerry McQuay. The parade included at least one other vehicle, John McCormick’s 1973 Chevy Nova (green in color). “And yes,” Kenney remembers. “The parades were so short we doubled back down Main Street.” If anyone else out there wants to fill in the blanks surrounding the St. Patrick’s Day parade, send the info to news@soprissun.com.

Carbondale Rhythm Collective: one of a kind

By David Troxel Sopris Sun Contributor In many world cultures, it’s said that “it takes a village to raise a child.� Eric Baumheier goes a step further, suggesting that the village that makes music and dances together is the ideal environment for child-raising, community-building and coming together to celebrate life. He describes Carbondale as just that kind of place. “For one thing,� says Baumheier, “I’ve noticed that Carbondale has a population that really likes to dance. Just go to Mountain Fair one time and you can see that there a lot of people here who love to dance.�

Aja, his partner in music and dance as well as in living and raising their three daughters together, agrees and expands on the idea. “The original connection between dancing and drumming is about ceremony, healing, and celebration,� she says. “A lot of people are receptive to that, and seek that expression in a safe space to experience transformation, letting go, releasing stress, or just celebrating together and bonding with other people who feel that same way.�

The Baumheier clan is at the center of a culturally diverse project in bringing communities together through rhythm and dance that they call the Carbondale Rhythm Collective. Originally a family affair that presented Eric, Aja and the girls as “The Frolix Family� (think “frolic�), the CRC has evolved over the past few years

into a loose afďŹ liation of drummers, marimba players and dancers who move uidly into and out of the group, while nurturing their common passion for connecting people and communities through the rhythmic energies of traditional African percussion and dance. But while expressing a deep respect for the West African drumming forms and the marimba-playing styles of Zimbabwe, Baumheier makes it clear that the CRC is not bound by custom. “I do it out of respect for the African teachers that I’ve had,â€? he says, “because for them it goes deeper than just a part of their culture, it’s spiritual, and we honor that. And we also work creatively with it, which often expands it beyond the boundaries of the traditional practices and balancing that with respect is sometimes a challenge.â€?

Baumheier, who teaches marimba classes in area schools and to adults, began building conďŹ dence in working with children as a middle school teacher at Compass School in Denver before moving to Carbondale in 1998. He quickly came to see his new home as “more of a village, in a greater sense than a lot of communities.

There’s a core group of people here that see Carbondale that way. And with the ecstatic dance, there are a lot of people breaking the molds, which is totally Carbondale also.�

While African music and dance has long been popular in more urban areas, Baumheier notes that Carbondale is friend-

lier than other rural areas to these traditional forms. He regards the African dance classes available locally as “a tradition in this valley,â€? noting that “alternative communities are drawn to the more exotic avors in life, and certainly the African avor is one of those.â€? Baumheier describes Carbondale as part of a “Golden Triangleâ€? of this sort of music that also includes Paonia and Crested Butte. The region, he says, is especially attractive to the African teachers that he and the CRC regularly invite to teach here. “It reminds them of home,â€? he says. “They come out of the urban environment that’s not like their village, and here there’s more of a village sense of it. They come together from these different towns and spend the night playing music together like they did in their villages. There may not be another African there, but they say this is closer to the real thing.â€?

Participation in the CRC is a communal experience as well, and often includes gathering together for pot-luck meals, getting into the mountains for camp-out rhythm workshops, and generally mingling families and social circles in a way that evokes a tribal connection often missing from modern life. “It’s not about learning to dance or drum or play,� Baumheier says, “but about dancers and drummers getting together in an interactive way that’s harmonious. I just really thrive on that feeling, and I think that a community can thrive on it too.�

Obituaries Patricia ann Reynolds Daily March 21, 2015 Patricia Ann Reynolds Daily, age 64, peacefully passed from this life on March 21, 2015 in Bozeman, Montana. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kathryn Isabel Sandel Reynolds and Robert Edward Reynolds, and her faithful canine companion, Beau. She is survived by one daughter, Meredith Renee Daily Kresge (Lance) of Bozeman and three beautiful granddaughters: Lyla Rae, Sophia Renee and Kasslyn Joe. She has one sister, Kathryn Melissa (Missy) Reynolds Simnacher (Gerald) of Albuquerque, New Mexico; two nieces, Erinn Melissa Simnacher Burch (David) of Clovis, New Mexico and Amanda Lynn Simnacher Walter (Brian) of Lafayette, California; two great-nieces and two great-nephews.

Pat was raised in Plainview, Texas and graduated from Plainview High School in 1968.

She attended Texas Tech University. When her parents moved to Austin, Texas and lived on Lake Austin, she became a competitive water skier, competing in slalom races both in Texas

and later in Colorado.

After leaving Texas, she became a longtime resident of Carbondale, Colorado, where many of her friends referred to her as “Texas Pat.” She was known for her association with several well-known restaurants including the Village Smithy and the Red Rock Diner. Her prize-winning chili and Caesar Salad that she served at Mountain Fair every year will long be remembered. Pat considered her finest achievement in life as a single mom in Carbondale to be her daughter, Meredith, and the beautiful, strong woman that Meredith has become and the family she has built in Bozeman.

A private memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 29 in Bozeman at 4 p.m. The family requests that monetary donations be made in memory of Patricia Daily to the Bozeman Deaconess Foundation (note “Hospice” in memo line), 931 Highland Blvd, Suite 3200, Bozeman, MT 59715. Their hospice personnel provided invaluable support for Pat’s physical and emotional needs as well as guidance and support to the family.

Kea Hause 1961-2015 Kea Hause of Carbondale passed away of natural causes in his sleep on Sunday, March 22, 2015. He is survived by his family: Adele Hause; Ken and Laurie Hause; Franz and Heather Hause-Froelicher; nephews Weaver and Eric Froelicher; Eric and Karen Hause; Ian Hause and Jennifer White; the love of his life, Lani Kitching and an extended circle of family and friends.

He was a kind and generous man, an artist, outdoorsman, and especially extraordinary fisherman, owner of Proudline Guided Fly Fishing Services and Holiday Hause, the most unique holiday design service in the Roaring Fork Valley.

The family plans to celebrate his life this summer and it will be announced in The Sopris Sun.

Ruth “Ditty” Perry 1918-2015 Ruth “Ditty” Perry passed away at her home in Carbondale on March 24, 2015. She was 96 years old. Ruth was born in Denver, Colorado on Nov. 28, 1918. She and her husband, Robert M. Perry, moved to the Mount Sopris Herford Ranch just south of Carbondale in 1941. Her husband preceded her in death.

Rona Fischer purchased Carbondale Insurance Service with a silent partner in April 1990 from Mary Boland. Fischer grew Carbondale Insurance Service from one employee in 1991, to six full-time employees at the time of the sale. “Glenwood Insurance exceeded our hopes for an agency to combine with and continue the tradition we have for excellent customer service, deep expertise, and an environment where our clients feel comfortable,” said Fischer.

Getting a good look at “Close In and Far Away” At the Wyly Sopris Sun Staff Report Carbondale artist Chris Hassig invites viewers to step up and give the creations in his current Wyly Art Center show “Close In and Far Away” a good look.

“The most immediate impression of my work often has to do with intricacy and detail. I draw and make artistic considerations at a much smaller scale than most artists do, which often means one needs to get very close to fully comprehend the work,” Hassig said.

Hassig works in pen and ink, copperplate etchings and cyanotypes. His show includes a short video of his “Saiopor” sketchbook.

“For twelve years I worked, and still do occasionally, on a 12” x 9” book that documents the imaginary country of Saiopor,” Hassig explained “Its limited size forced me

to work small to encompass all of the details I wished to include.”

He said that while most of his work involves a lot of patience, he often encounters a kind of “intellectual restlessness” as his mind envisions myriad concepts and evolutions that he would never have enough time to fully explore.

“I’m attracted to mystery and subtlety, and work that asks for both a visual and intellectual engagement. So I’m often trying to think on multiple competing levels. With my maps, how the map looks aesthetically can often be in competition with legibility. I hope viewers will take some time to get lost down the backstreets, construct their own interpretations, and envision being there.”

Hassig also focuses on semi-abstracted drawings of grass that combine rich detail and minimalist compositions. He produced the intaglio prints in “Close In and Far Away” as an apprentice at Mixit Print Studio in Somerville, Mass., where he also did

work in painting, collage, cyanotypes and postal art. He holds a B.A. in architecture and environmental studies from Middlebury College in Vermont. This is his third solo show. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On April 16 at 5:30pm, The Wyly Gallery will host journalist Brent GardnerSmith in a conversation with Hassig, titled “Inside Saiopor.” Gardner-Smith will engage Hassig in a conversation about his process, his evolution and the ideas behind his work.

The audience will also be treated to a rare inside view of Hassig’s sketchbook, including his fictional country of Saiopor. Discussion will revolve around “Close In and Far Away.” The suggested donation is $10.

“I wish to make work that inspires creative decisions in actions, such as preparing a soup or arranging a moment for tea,” Alleghany explained.

Harvey’s work presents structural handbuilt, closed vessels that reference architecture and the human form. “My intent is to build pieces that connote that a story is being written, a narrative that takes the reader on a journey one sentence or paragraph at a time,” Sam Harvey said.

Wyly happenings om page 12 week painting and drawing workshop • On May 8 at 5 p.m., The Wyly Annex opens the show “Doug Casebeer and Andrea Wallace.” Both are Anderson Ranch staff members. Casebeer is the artistic director of ceramics; Wallace is artistic director of photography and new media. The show runs through May 30.

• On April 8, adults are invited to the Art Farm for “Articulated Figures and Fine Wine” with Lisa Singer and Kathy Honea.

The Wyly will provide inspiration, materials, wine and snacks. The cost is $35. Upcoming Art Farm dates are April 22 and May 13.

• On April 11, Pam Porter gives a oneday workshop titled “Visionary Collage” that connects participants to their subconscious, gives them direction and brings more

joy into their life. The cost is $80.

• “The Art Project” is an after school program on Tuesdays for kids 6-8 that continues through April 7. The current session it titled “Time Machine” and it goes back in time to help kids focus on such artists as Matisse, Andy Warhol, Kandinsky, Rousseau, Dali and others. Coming up April 14 through May 26: “Art-full Animals.”

• Saturday “Crafternoons” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. is a drop-in program for kids of all ages (4 and under require a parent to help out). It’s taught by Lindsey Webster. Projects are $5 each.

• “Art Start” is a new program for toddlers and pre-schoolers from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursdays. Each week kids and parents will explore fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood and Jack and the Beanstalk.

It’s crazy that every year they share their culinary talents with us by feeding cast and crew (over 70 hungry folks) during both nights of the show, simply out of generosity. Other food comes from local businesses like Dos Gringos and Peppino’s.

There are so many more I could mention like Alta Otto overseeing our box office and Jessie Hinker and Brittany Sutherland coordinating all the hair and make-up, Eric Allen

bringing the music on and Soozie Lindbloom creating the most awesome puppet for the end of the show, but this list would be too long.

What is important to remember is we live in a community where people are willing to go the extra mile to make something valuable and creative happen. This makes the journey as wonderful as the outcome and that is what CCAH is all about: building community through art.
