Is U.S. DNA headed for outer space?

By Patrick Hunter Sopris Sun Columnist Who are you? Or, maybe, what are you?

Let’s put down a few of the basics. Homo Sapiens. (Wise man, in Latin.) We’ve been around about 200,000 years. Some of us “Euro” types have been found to still have a little Neanderthal in us.

Say you are a woman. Say you are about 30 years old. Say you don’t have children but your “biological clock” is ticking. If you don’t already have a “permanent” mate, you might be looking for one. You are looking for certain characteristics in the male version of the species.

Some good research was done in evolutionary biology in a survey of women in cultures around the world. From Mongolians to African tribes, from Inuit to Italians or Americans of all ethnicities they found striking commonalities. Women were all looking for the same things in their mates. Women wanted men who offered some financial support, had some status in the community, were healthy, had good looks, a stable lifestyle, and could provide emotional support to include love and affection. In another words, regardless of culture, basic human needs and wants are the same throughout the

species. The reason is simple. Having a child requires an enormous investment in time and energy and resources. The basic human model is for two parents to share that effort.

Human children require a long period of support. With the current economy, that can run into their 20s and longer.

So, what drives these most basic decisions and actions? Is this something we’re taught or does it come from observing our neighbors? No, it’s deeper than that. You could say it’s our “operating system.” We are hard wired to reproduce, just like every living thing on the planet. The wiring is built into every cell in our body; it’s called DNA. Observe a litter of puppies, or a group of young children in the schoolyard. You can see different kinds of behavior. You will see different levels of interaction, of caution, of friendliness, of aggression, of energy, of appetites, of observation — the list goes on. Yes there is the debate about “Nature” or “Nurture.” But these critters are too young to have learned their behavior. And why out of five kids in the same family are there such different personalities when they have had the same upbringing?

Most of us like to think we are completely in charge of our own lives. Some think a

higher power has a lot to do with things. Flip Wilson the comedian portrayed a character named Geraldine that used to claim “the devil made me do it.” So I’ve been talking about personal traits. But let’s expand the scope.

Why, for example, is the United States facing another crisis in a foreign land on the other side of the planet? What is it about a country, in particular ours, that is constantly embroiled in conflicts with other countries or other people? Why isn’t Denmark constantly up in arms, or Mongolia, or New Zealand?

If America were a person, you would say there was a very aggressive personality, a tendency to go looking for problems.

Why does America have more people in prison than any other country? Why does America have more gun violence than any other country? I would make the case that our human DNA is a major reason behind these kinds of behaviors. Now we come to the gist of this essay.

The two major challenges the world faces today are diminishing natural resources and climate change. Many scientists are predicting the end of Homo Sapiens. The general problem is that humans have created the disaster we are now facing; but we do not have DNA page 14

Dear Editor: I am writing in support of the proposed name change of Bull Pasture Park on the west side of Highway 133 south of Crystal Bridge Drive to Nuche Park. “Nuche” means “The People,” and is what Ute Indians call themselves.

In making this name change the town of Carbondale will be joining other Western Slope towns — such as Montrose, Delta, Ouray and Aspen — in acknowledging the Nuche, the people who inhabited and stewarded the lands before the settlers came with a name designation of a park, trail, tree or other natural environment.

Dear Editor: Stacey Benot is our mayor. This lady has always had Carbondale in her heart and on her mind. Why in the world would she keep butting heads with Frosty and two others on this city council?

She gets out voted every time she thinks of something that would be a good thing for our town.

I have spoken with her on numerous occasions and it seems that Frosty always has a different opinion regarding a number of issues and he certainly doesn’t work with Stacey on a lot of things. You can tell by his comments that he is of a different mind than those of us that are Old Timers here in Carbondale.

So, as far as I am concerned, I would be the first one to say that Frosty and two of his cohorts who always vote his way should not be re-elected. Let’s get Stacey some people she can work with.

His previous experience as a board member has me convinced that he will be right there rolling up his sleeves with Katrina and Alexander to do the good work to keep Carbondale a wonderful place to live, work, play and be amazed — at any age. Candidates discuss issues; don’t much disagree Four running for three seats

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Writer In Aspen, it’s called “Squirm Night,” where candidates often field nasty questions and everyone gets the opportunity to vent.

At Monday night’s candidate forum at the Third Street Center, it was more like “Cozy Up to the Microphone” night, where the four candidates running for three trustee seats didn’t disagree on much of anything.

Four candidates are running for three Carbondale Board of Trustee seats: incumbent Frosty Merriott, plus Alexander (AJ) Hobbs, Katrina Byars and Wayne Horak.

Mayor Stacey Bernot, a fifth-generation Carbondale native, is running unopposed for a second term.

Monday night, this reporter’s notes show that the word “definitely” was apparently used only once, by Merriott, when asked if he thinks the town needs a new grocery store.

Hobbs and Byars, both Roaring Fork Valley natives, said or implied that Carbondale can be a “role model” in sustainability.

And after taking a pass about the question concerning the town’s biggest challenge, Horak returned to it later in the night and said “It’s the budget.”

The night’s moderator, Sopris Sun board member Frank Zlogar, posed nine questions to the panel. Some questions were submitted previous to the forum and others by audience members. They included questions about economic development, Highway 133 construction, balancing events such as Mountain Fair with the impacts they cause to neighbors, the intersection of Highway 133 and Dolores Way, future use of the former Gordon Cooper Library building, drilling in the Thompson Divide, and how to increase sales tax revenues.

Bernot made her opening comments then was retired to the audience, where she

sat next to trustee Allyn Harvey, to observe the remainder of the forum.

Here is some of what the trustee candidates had to say.

AJ Hobbs Hobbs (who also answers to the name Xander) got the best laugh of the night when he pointed out he’s a “single young male” who has participated in all of Carbondale’s special events. LIFT-UP participates in annual hunger challenge Sopris Sun Staff Report Through April 30, LIFT-UP will participate in the Feinstein Foundation’s 17th annual Challenge to Fight Hunger, which offers $1 million to be divided proportionally amongst qualified hunger relief agencies nationwide, based on the amount of food and money they collect in during the two-month period.

Last year more than $211 million was raised by 1,857 hunger fighting agencies, according to a press release. Over the previous 16 years, the annual campaign has generated more than $2 billion in giving.

According to Shawn Allen Feinstein, whose foundation spearheads the national campaign, “This has become the greatest grass roots campaign ever to fight hunger in our country.” Feinstein’s primary reason for the annual challenge is to raise awareness about hunger in America, and to encourage people to support the local

organizations that are tackling this widespread problem. He leverages his $1 million to generate more than $200 million in donations.

As an added incentive this year, the locally-managed Stone Foundation has offered an additional $10,000 in matching funds for the first $10,000 that LIFT-UP raises from this campaign through April 30 — a dollar-for-dollar match.

“Many non-profit organizations raise much of their funding in the fourth quarter of the year, so this springtime campaign boosts support at a time when donations tend to be lower than during the fall/winter holiday season,” said a LIFT-UP spokesman.

LIFT-UP’s services are offered yearround and are serving 2,000-2,500 people per month from their seven area food pantries. More than 1,600 meals per month are served from LIFT-UP’s Ex-

tended Tables, which operate in Rifle and Glenwood Springs. LIFT-UP’s executive director, Kimberly Loving, said, “We greatly appreciate support from the community at any time of year, but during March and April, donations could be worth more than double the amount people send, which will really help a lot.”

In 2013, LIFT-UP received $1,8 million in donated food from individuals, food drives and local grocery stores, which is distributed from its food pantries to families in need.

LIFT-UP also purchases food from Food Bank of the Rockies in Grand Junction, and from local grocery stores as needed. People may request assistance up to four times in a calendar year, and receive four days of food for their family size.

Despite gradual improvement in both the national and local economies, last year LIFT-UP saw an increase in nearly

all of its services over 2012. The nonprofit served 48,961 people (one or more times), up 12 percent; distributed 52,654 bags of food, up 5 percent; the Extended Table served 1,609 meals, an increase of 11 percent.

In January of 2014, all of these categories of assistance exceeded the monthly averages for last year. “Clearly there are still many people in our region who need a little extra help making ends meet,” said Loving.

LIFT-UP is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing humanitarian assistance in the communities it serves, with seven area food pantries from Parachute to Aspen, thrift stores in Rifle and Parachute, and The Extended Table that serves evening meals in Glenwood Springs and Rifle. LIFT-UP is now in its 32nd year of operation and is made possible through community support.

Cops tow burglar’s vehicle Sopris Sun Staff Report On March 4, Carbondale police received a call of a suspect that entered a residence through an unlocked door while the female resident was sleeping, according to town manager Jay Harrington’s weekly report. “Resident reported that the suspect was attempting to steal items from her home.” The suspect fled the area prior to police arrival but left his vehicle behind. “Suspect's vehicle was towed and when he came to claim it later in the day, he was arrested for burglary and transported to Garfield County Jail.”

In other paraphrased notes from the town manager’s weekly report: • The tennis nets are up on the Darien pickleball and tennis courts. Wind screens will go up the week of March 10-14.

• Members of the parks crew have been using rotary brooms on the bicycle and pedestrian trails. “There are numerous areas on our trail system where we had to spread Scoria for ice control this winter. The lengthy freeze/thaw cycles required repeat applications so we have a build-up that needed to be removed.”

• Crews have been changing the holiday banners to seasonal banners. They have also been removing the decorative lighting from trees downtown. A large man-lift was brought in to remove the decorations from the Forest Service tree.

• The park crew completed work on the replacement bridge rails for the north bridge in Sopris Park. Parks supervisor Russell Sissom handcrafted the new rails. Weather permitting, they will barricade the larger wooden bridge and apply several coats of stain and preservative.

• Joe Fox, a representative from Musco Lighting, conducted a baseball/softball lighting inspection to access lamp condition and system integrity. Three lamps out of the 32 were out and it “could be a fuse issue” or necessitate replacement of the bulbs. A full report will be sent to Jeff Jackel and Tim Hunter with R&A Electric. The town has a service contract with R&A to conduct any repairs or bulb replacement.

• Crews were scheduled to dismantle the downtown ice rink the week of March 10-14 and are waiting for the ice to completely melt on the Gus Darien rink before taking it apart.

• Carbondale police received new information regarding car break-ins that happened over the last several months. The cases are under investigation.

• School Resource Officer Michael Zimmerman and the Carbondale fire chief met with school officials to update emergency procedures for the schools.

• A public hearing for a rezoning application on the south side of the 100 block of Main Street is scheduled for March 13. The trustees are slated to discuss the application on March 18.

• The Planning Commission will review the final section of the UDC annotated outline on March 13. The outline will then be revised and the public review of the document will begin.

• Gould Construction has been working on the preliminary punch list on the waste water sludge project.

• The Roaring Fork water treatment plant is operable, however one of the air compressors is off line until additional troubleshooting is performed to get it running properly.

WEDNESDAY Feb. 26 At 12:35 p.m. police received a report of a vehicle on the bike path near Highway 133 and Village Road. Police were unable to locate the vehicle.

WEDNESDAY Feb. 26 At 3 p.m. an employee at a downtown restaurant reported that an unknown person shot a window with a paint ball during lunch.

Customers heard the strike but did not see anyone. It’s believed the paint ball came from someone driving by. There was no damage. The case is inactive.

Prius gone wrong If you saw the pickup truck and totaled Toyota Prius in the middle of Highway 133 (near Wells Fargo) on March 5, not to worry.

Although it was a scary accident, those involved escaped with only minor injuries. The police report was not ďŹ led as of Tuesday, but Denise Barkhurst reports that a friend found himself struggling to maintain control of his 2007 Prius. As he pulled into Wells Fargo to access the drive-through ATM, his Prius began to accelerate even though he was hitting the brakes. He wove through the area, avoiding other cars and customers as his car continued to speed up. In the course of several seconds and 200 feet, the Prius had accelerated to full speed. To avoid causing greater harm, the driver then made a sharp right turn onto Highway 133, crashing into the pickup.

According to Barkhurst, her friend’s Prius model was among those recalled in November 2009 due to problems with oor mats getting caught up in the acceleration pedals, resulting in the pedal getting stuck in the wide-open position. Independence stages inaugural 5K Independence Run & Hike staged its inaugural Thompson Divide 5K south of the Spring Gulch Nordic ski area on March 8,

with Beth Broome leading the pack with a time of 26:53, followed by Brion After at 27:36 and Laurie Guevara-Stone with a 28:43. The route followed County Road 108 with views of Mt. Sopris and the Thompson Creek watershed. Under blue skies and a bright sun, contestants toed the starting line in footgear that ranged from YakTrax and tennis shoes to snowshoes. Rounding out the top 10 ďŹ nishers were: Jen Burn (29:27), David Clark (30:16), Tom Whatoff (32:34), Danielle Morse (32:35), Paul Freeman (34:40), Merrill Johnson (46:22) and Zach Paris (46:23).

The Roaring Fork High School boy’s basketball team gave fourth-seeded Colorado Academy a ďŹ ght in the 3A regional tournament last Friday, but came up short 56-42.

The Rams trailed by two points at the end of the ďŹ rst quarter but the Mustangs took a 28-15 lead to the locker room at half-time. Libraries break record The GarďŹ eld County Library District announced it gathered a record amount of food this February during its Food for Fines program. More than 5,600 non-perishable food items were donated to local LIFT-UP locations. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This program is the perfect opportunity for our patrons to not only take care of their pesky ďŹ nes, but also to help feed the hungry in their communities,â&#x20AC;? said Amelia Shelley, executive director of GarďŹ eld County Libraries. To date, there has been about a 570 percent increase in donations since the program began in 2008. There were 4,542 donations last year. Hentschel boys finally coming home

By Debbie Bruell Sopris Sun Correspondent Last Monday, Lindsay and Hadley Hentschel were elated to receive the phone call they’ve been waiting 3 ½ years to receive: their adopted sons finally will be allowed to leave Haiti and come live with them in Carbondale.

Mykerson (6) and Leander (4) have lived in the same orphanage in Haiti for most of their lives. The Hentschels committed to adopting Mykerson in August of 2010. When they travelled to Haiti to meet him for the first time in December of 2010, they also met Leander, another boy in the orphanage. The Hentschels originally hoped to adopt two boys and it seemed to them that Leander was meant to be a part of their family. By January of 2011 they had officially added Leander to their adoption paperwork.

Typically, an international adoption from Haiti takes about 18 months. When the terribly destructive earthquake of January 2010 hit Haiti, adoption processes became much more delayed. One third of all government workers were killed in the earthquake and numerous government buildings and offices were destroyed.

“Haiti has always been a complex country to adopt from, due to government corruption and inefficiency,” Lindsay told The Sopris Sun, “and the earthquake augmented that.”

A contested presidential election then led to further delays for the Hentschels. A spelling error on Mykerson’s passport was the cause of the final delay.

Lindsay said that only one other family from this orphanage has been struggling through the adoption process for as long as they have. Mykerson and Leander have watched over 50 other kids leave the orphanage with their adopted parents. Haiti recently passed a new law that aims to shorten the adoption process to an average of 6 - 12 months.

Over the past few years while Lindsay and Hadley have waited for their two sons to be allowed to come to the U.S., they have travelled to Haiti six times to visit their boys, spending a total of 14 weeks there. In the summer of 2012 Lindsay and Hadley spent two months in Haiti teaching English to the children in the orphanage, the orphanage staff and some high school students.

The Hentschels are both teachers by profession. They have worked in the Roaring Fork School District for the past 11 years: Hadley as a RFHS science teacher and Lindsay as a CMS language arts teacher, RFHS English teacher and in a new position beginning this past fall as a district-wide instructional facilitator.

Hadley and Lindsay will take a few weeks’ leave from their positions in the district to get their family of four settled in Carbondale. They plan to fly down to Haiti on March 22.

They don’t know exactly how many days later they’ll be flying back home, but they do know that this time the boys will be flying back with them.

Once they return to Carbondale they plan to take a couple of weeks just helping the boys adjust to their new lives. “They’ve never had anything that’s truly their own,” Lindsay said. “Everything in the orphanage is communal ... toys ... rooms ... even their clothes were shared.”

Mykerson and Leader’s first language is Haitian Creole. They do speak some English, which they’ve been learning in school. Lindsay studied Haitian Creole for a couple of years and has practiced on all of her trips down there. “I do alright with basic communication now,” Lindsay said.

Around the end of April the boys will start kindergarten and preschool at Crystal River Elementary School.

“We can’t wait for them to be a part of the community here,” Lindsay said this week.

“I don’t think there are many communities that would have been so open and welcoming and excited to meet these kids.”

Kick the chemicals; eliminate toxins in the home

By Sue Gray Sopris Sun Correspondent In 1964 a thick haze covered the Los Angeles area for six days straight. The smog was a result of pollutants such as car exhaust and factory emissions reacting with strong sunlight. This chemical reaction creates level ground ozone, the principle component of smog, which reduces visibility to a few miles, and causes physical reactions like burning lungs, itchy watery eyes, and severe respiratory problems. Children, the elderly and those with asthma or heart ailments are most at risk.

The first Los Angeles smog attack was in 1943 and by 1947, recognizing the need to monitor the air quality of the Los Angeles Basin and issue warnings to people who might be particularly susceptible to the adverse effects of smog, the Los Angeles County Air Pollution Control District was formed. A system of “Smog Alerts” was developed to inform the public of the level of hazardous air pollution. Under these alerts, people were discouraged from physical activity and outdoor exposure. School children were kept indoors during recess and sports events were canceled.

At first, the nature and source of L.A.’s smog problem was not clearly understood.

But by 1952, a theory arose that automobile exhaust was a major source of air pollution.

In 1955 the Federal Air Pollution Control Act provided funds for research into the causes and effects of air pollution. Studies confirmed that chemicals in vehicle exhaust were the main ingredient in smog.

With its burgeoning population and associated vehicle growth, California was the driving force, literally, for establishing air quality standards and vehicle emissions controls. In 1959 legislation was enacted in California that required emission control devices for motor vehicles. A year later, the Motor Vehicle Pollution Control Board was established to test and certify emission control devices for installation on cars being sold in California.

The focus on limiting vehicle emissions had a positive effect on Southern California’s air quality. There were 102 smog alerts in 1980, 1983 and 1985, and 42 in 1990. By

the year 2000, with 23.4 million registered vehicles in California and annual vehicle miles traveled (VMT) of 280 billion miles, emissions were about 1.2 million tons per year. That was 200,000 tons less than in 1990, when the VMT was 240 billion.

Despite its successes, Southern California remains one of the most polluted areas in our nation. Los Angeles was rated the most polluted city in 2013 by The American Lung Association, because ozone levels are twice the federal health standard for two-thirds of the year.

The truly unfortunate thing about vehicular air pollution is that it doesn’t stay in one place. A layer of smog now covers our planet and has been linked to melting ice caps and warming temperature trends, which spells disaster for life as we know it.

that the average American drives 7.6 percent fewer miles today than in 2004, the peak of per-capita driving. Between 2000 and 2010, the number of people bicycling to work increased in 85 of 100 cities studied, and public transit ridership also went up.

Here in the Roaring Fork Valley we have an abundance of alternative transportation options.

Our small communities are accessible by foot and bike, and proximity to friends and neighbors makes carpooling easy. The Roaring Fork Transit Authority (RFTA) runs an excellent bus system. We have a premier bike/pedestrian path on the Rio Grande Trail from Glenwood Springs to Aspen, and the dedicated volunteers of the Carbondale Bike, Pedestrian and Trails Commission are continuously working to improve safe access for cyclists and walkers.

Still, most of us need to drive a car from time to time, which inevitably contributes to both local air pollution and greenhouse gasses. Short of offing our current vehicle in favor of an electric car, what can we do to reduce our pollution level when driving? It turns out that conserving fuel reduces emis-

Go to your farthest destination first to warm up your engine for better fuel economy.

• Drive the posted speed limit or slightly below — Vehicle fuel consumption increases about 5 percent for every 5 miles above 60 mph.

• Avoid rapid starts and stops — “Jack rabbit” starts can increase fuel use by up to 40 percent. Fuel savings and lower emissions occur with gradual acceleration and deceleration.

• Open and close the windows — Put the windows down when driving under 40 mph.

Above 40 mph, air conditioning is more fuel efficient. Use the “recycle inside air” feature, which reuses the cooled air inside the car, so it uses less gas.

• Maintain your car: Change engine oil with correct grade oil (1-2 percent miles-pergallon benefit); replace clogged air filters (up to 10 percent miles-per-gallon benefit); tune your engine (4 percent average miles per gallon benefit).

• Check tire pressure monthly — Proper tire pressure is safer, extends tire life and can improve miles-per-gallon by up to 3 percent.

• Respect C’dale’s idling ordinance — That’s right, there’s a law (ordinance 7.18.010)! Today’s automobile engines don’t need “warming up,” and we certainly don’t need exhaust fumes spewing into our air from vehicles left to idle while parked. If your car’s not moving, the engine shouldn’t be running.

The Ann Korologos Gallery in Basalt hosts an opening reception for Andy Taylor’s solo exhibition “Fields and Hedgerows” from 5 to 7 p.m. on March 14. A 40-year Carbondale resident, Taylor said he paints what he knows best – the vistas and details of the land in western Colorado and eastern Utah. “In this region, we have fields broken by irrigation ditches, by cottonwoods, by mountains,” said Taylor. “Everything leads to an edge, and sometimes we get multiple edges.”

Valley View launches new coronary program Sopris Sun Staff Report Valley View Hospital has the launch of the only roboticassisted coronary angioplasty program in the Rocky Mountain region, according to a press release.

The procedure is performed by Frank Laws, M.D., the medical director of VVH’s Heart and Vascular Center using the CorPath System — the first and only FDA 510(k) cleared robotic-assisted technology to aid interventional cardiologists in placing stents and balloons in patients with coronary artery disease.

Valley View is the only hospital offering this procedure in Colorado, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming.

“We are excited to offer this innovative technology to treat coronary artery disease,” said Dr. Laws. “The precision and accuracy offered through the enhanced control, visualization and measurement of the CorPath System represent an important advancement in how we perform angioplasties.”

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is characterized by plaque buildup that restricts blood flow in the arteries, and is a widespread and life-threatening disease. It is the most common form of heart disease and the leading cause of death in the United States.

Traditionally, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), commonly known as an ‘angioplasty,’ is the most common treatment for CAD. In this procedure, a balloon is used to physically open an artery blockage to help improve blood flow. During an angioplasty, interventional cardiologists often use stents, a wire metal mesh tube, to prop open the artery and keep it open following the procedure. While angioplasty procedures are performed frequently in the United States the procedure has remained largely unchanged for decades.

“Vascular robotics offers physicians and patients with a minimally-invasive technology that may improve the precision of stent and balloon placements as well as reduce radiation of the procedure for physicians,” said Dr. Laws.

The CorPath System allows interventional cardiologists to perform the procedure with robotic precision. Seated in a radiation-protected cockpit, the physician uses a joystick to robotically advance guide wires, angioplasty balloons and stents to clear the blockage and restore blood flow. Additionally, the technology provides interventional cardiologists with the ability to accurately measure the anatomy and precisely position stents, which may lead to fewer stent implants.

Among the first patients to benefit from the procedure was Jim Bickling of Gypsum. “The entire experience was pretty amazing,” he said. “It wasn’t painful and it was so quick. I was surprised at how small the instruments are and how simple it was to correct a complex issue in my arteries.”

Frosty Merriott As for Merriott, he said he wants to keep Carbondale’s “small town character.” At the same time, he’s concerned about the sales tax “leakage” that sends revenues to Glenwood Springs and Willits when people shop there. He pointed out the town trustees have had to dip into reserves to balance the budget, but with a new grocery store and the increased sales taxes it’s expected to produce, the town should be in “good shape.”

I would also like to thank Garfield County Commissioner John Martin for speaking out on this issue in his letter to U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, urging him to support legislation protecting the Thompson Divide and paving the way for a market-based solution to be reached. Being a Western man, Martin understands the value of the land in the Thompson Divide to ranchers and the property values of those of us who live up Four Mile.

In regards to those oil and gas leases in the Thompson Divide area, there is a young lawyer who works for Pitkin County who can show categorically that SG Interests has not done their “due diligence.” They were required by law to develop these leases over a specified period of time and failed to do so.

Are we as homeowners allowed skip on our mortgage payments and still keep our home? SG Interests has not paid their bills and should not be allowed an additional suspension (extension) by the BLM. Rumors are not important right now so let’s just sit tight until we have the answers we need. I am certain that the only way I am personally getting through this with grace and strength that would have made her proud is because of all of the love beams coming from everyone she touched.

The question is: does our “operating system,” our DNA, have the capacity or the know-how to change what we are doing? Francis Crick, the co-discoverer of DNA, said it was impossible that our DNA originated on this planet. The astronomer Carl Sagan spoke of “panspermia,” which is the travel of living material through space.

You could say our DNA is “inherited.” Would you say it is “perfect in every way”?

Let’s make a short list of problems: inherited diseases and defects, war, cheating, murdering, lying, greed, adultery, lust in general, over-population, competition (for anything and everything), addictions, cruelty, religious fanaticism, authoritarian complexes, poverty, etc. There is considerable room for improvement. The concept of modifying genes in living organisms is very old. Look at the vast differences among dogs, all of which descended from the wolf. Much of the food we eat is modified from its original form. Improvements to human health are being made in advanced medical research.

Modifying human behavior by “updating” the operating system is a pretty scary idea, sort of “Hitlerish.” But if you have seen the pathetic negotiations at the international level over coming to grips about climate change, you could say we need a change.

If we are going to “make it” to the next evolutionary step we are going to have to “clean up our act.” If not, it might be our DNA that shows up on some other planet.

Fashion extravaganza returns Sopris Sun Staff Report The Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities presents the 6th annual Green Is the New Black Fashion Extravaganza March 14-15 at 8 p.m. at the Third Street Center.

Doors open at 7 p.m. for a pre-show dessert reception; a martini, beer and wine bar; and an opportunity for the audience to interact with a wonderland installation.

A trunk show will follow the show on Friday and will be open again from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Green is the New Black has grown from a small show to something larger, bringing together 30 local, regional, and nationally known fashion designers, 80 models and performers, over 50 volunteers, and draws over 1,000 audience members from Aspen to Rifle and the North Fork.

Green is the New Black may also be one of the largest collaborative creative projects existing in the Roaring Fork Valley as it combines textile, digital, and fine arts along with film, live dance, music, and, new this year — poetry.

“The diversity of talent and the committed involvement of the community is what makes Green is the New Black so magical,” said GITNB choreographer Deborah Colley. “But that collaborative spirit between the arts and the community members is also a wonderful manifestation of what CCAH is all about: building community through art.”

With an emphasis on sustainable fashion, the GITNB takes an environmental twist on the theme “Down the Rabbit Hole.” The audience will find it-

self on a dynamic, fantastical and thought-provoking journey through a wonderland filled with the paradoxes of scenic beauty and catastrophe, natural order and bureaucratic chaos, and environmental integrity destroyed by consumption.

GITNB is a multi-faceted show, meant to enliven and inspire, but it also raised funds for CCAH’s arts education programs.

“Though the art teachers in the Roaring Fork School District are top notch, youth’s access to art education is decreasing with Crystal River Elementary school youth receiving only 45 minutes of art class weekly,” Kimberly said.

With funds raised from the show, CCAH is able to offer free after school art classes, youth scholarships and subsidized bilingual piano classes and professional development for Carbondale art teachers. The funds also support the Carbondale Middle School theatre arts program and the annual Arts Explosion that connects middle school youth with community artists specializing in painting, ceramics, dance, music, theatre and digital media.

Tickets are $30 for CCAH members, $35 for nonmembers, with VIP runway seating at $100.

Basalt’s own “big top” brings flying circus to town

By S. Michael Jundt The Basalt “Emporium and Flying Circus” is a welcome addition to historic downtown Basalt. Ringmaster Shae Singer, whose successful concept originated in her Aspen location in 2011, is no stranger to Basalt. In fact, her Emporium resides in the same space — 132 Midland Ave. — that her “Sashae” flower shop occupied 25 years ago.

Singer, a Texas graduate with degrees in journalism, industrial psychology and a minor in underwater photography, did her share of traveling before settling in the Roaring Fork Valley.

“When I graduated I worked for ABC and NBC News,” says Singer, “covering topics in areas that had big problems like San Salvador during the takeover, Mexico’s elections, oil refinery explosions and various war torn areas.

I worked with PBS as an editor on several underwater films and on other freelance video and film jobs. While it was exciting and certainly an adrenalin rush that type of lifestyle is hard to sustain.”

The Emporium hosts the work of dozens of local and Colorado area artists and

crafters and the items are priced by the artists themselves so you’re not paying for a middleman. But the Flying Circus is not just a showcase for art. You’ll find locally produced food, candles, jams, honey, farm fresh eggs and, just like 25 years earlier, flowers.

Having been involved with the Aspen Saturday Market and the Aspen Highlands Winter Market, Singer realized the need of local artists to have year round representation to promote and sell their creations. Her idea has been an immediate success and she has a nice waiting list of artists wanting to “join the circus.”

The store is also a way to support local artists and to enable customers to buy local, all with a bit of fun tossed in. And, there’s a sustainable quality to it all. Everything is either handmade or repurposed and that alone is reason to applaud.

“I really think one of the points to remember is that Basalt is the heart of the valley … . With Aspen on one end and Glenwood on the other we are center stage . . . Basalt needs this type of store. We’ll change and grow daily with art, product and fun.”
