Now, I’m not saying people like Earl “Rusty” Butz (not joking, that’s his name) should take all the blame for sick kids today, but he can have a second helping. If we’re talking about the separation of selling and regulating our food, ol’ Rusty Butz seems to have not only let the business into agriculture, he set them up with a nice clean stall and a full trough.

Until a healthy body is as much of a priority as a healthy bottom line, I guess we’ll all just have to keep swimming through the crap they’re processing, packaging and selling as food. We’ll have to read through the unpronounceable ingredients and avoid them, sticking to real, whole foods whenever possible. Since the FDA won’t protect us from GMOs and chemical food, we’ll have to be extra vigilant with what we put in our mouths. We’ll be our own lifeguards — both in and out of the pool.

Magic wand days over for Colorado River

By Ken Neubecker Sopris Sun Columnist (Editor’s note: This is the second in a two-part series about Colorado’s water plan).

Colorado will need a lot of water by the year 2050. The state, through the Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) and Basin Roundtables, has embarked on a Colorado Water Plan for providing that water. The plan is directed to incorporate Colorado’s core values of “a productive economy that supports vibrant and sustainable cities, viable and productive agriculture, and a robust skiing, recreation and tourism industry.” Another core value is “a strong environment that includes healthy watersheds, rivers and streams, and wildlife” (Governor’s Executive Order D 2013005).

The CWCB thinks it knows how much water we’ll need for cities and farms, but water needs for “healthy watersheds, rivers and streams” is pretty vague. That’s a problem. How can you plan for the “needs” of rivers and streams if you don’t know what those needs are? The general assumption is that environmental water needs will be filled as “enhancements” to

projects that store and divert water for consumptive needs. But rivers need more than that.

It’s good that environmental needs are now being incorporated in projects that traditionally destroy rivers. Reservoirs store water by drowning rivers and turning them into lakes. The flows downstream are altered for the demands of diversion delivery, hydropower and other needs that disregard or supersede those of the river. As consumptive demands grow, flows for rivers may become politically inconvenient.

Many dams have been built with the promise of a better river downstream, only to see that promise prove as empty as the rivers.

Reservoirs and storage for human uses are vitally important, but so are the needs of the living rivers that they transform.

New projects for storage and diversion must be considered carefully and sparingly.

They should be a last resort only after all other options are exhausted.

The Colorado Water Plan must also recognize that most rivers and streams of Colorado have already been severely degraded by thousands of existing reservoirs and diversions. You cannot plan for or hope to restore healthy rivers and watersheds if you don’t consider the degraded state they

are already in.

Rivers and watersheds are connected systems of complex biological and hydrologic forces. They cannot be separated into neatly engineered segments, one that provides water for cities and farms hundreds of miles away and then another for rafting and fishing. Natural systems don’t work that way.

Another problem is the notion that additional water for cities and farms on the Front Range can be filled by building another large diversion out of the Colorado River. The upper Colorado River already has most of its flows diverted to the thirsty cities and farms of eastern Colorado. Current plans alone could see even more water going east from the Colorado and tributaries like the Eagle and Roaring Fork.

Then there is climate change.

The Bureau of Reclamation expects the native flows of the Colorado River at Lees Ferry to drop 9 percent by 2060. The melting snows of Colorado and Wyoming’s mountains provide water for 36 million people. How is a diminished river going to continue providing water for twice as many people in 2060? And what about 2061, or 2100?

Platform tennis court proposed Sopris Sun Staff Report A citizen recently asked staff about starting a fund-raising campaign to build a platform tennis court on a yet-to-be determined park site, according to town manager Jay Harrington’s weekly report. He said the game is played on an aluminum deck about one-third the size of a tennis court, surrounded by a 12foot high 16-gauge fence, which allows play off the walls, as in racquetball and squash. The Parks and Recreation Commission will discuss the suggestion in March. On a related note, staff is working to complete an RFP on the Parks, Recreation & Trails Master Plan to present to the Parks and Recreation Commission in March.

In other paraphrased highlights from Harrington’s Feb. 28 report: • Staff received a citizen inquiry on renaming Third Street Partnership Park “Bonnie Fisher Park.” Fisher has been a CES teacher for more than 40 years. The P&R Commission will discuss the proposal in March.

• Sales tax revenues are in for the month of February (January sales, taxes paid in February). The town’s total collection for 2014 is up 3.4 percent compared to 2013. Retail and medical marijuana regular tax was up significantly.

• The planning commission continued its review of the Unified Development Code (UDC) annotated outline on Feb. 27. After some good progress, the commission decided to continue the discussion to March 13. Only one section is left and it is anticipated the Staff/Planning Commission review will be done at that time.

At that point, the requested revisions will be sent to Clarion to be incorporated into the outline. The revised annotated outline will then be considered by advisory boards and commissions as well as the public.

• RFTA’s BRT charrette is scheduled for March 10 from 1 to 4

p.m. A public notice for the meeting has been posted for both the Planning Commission and the Board of Trustees if multiple members of either group wish to attend.

• Staff is working to complete the RFP for the design-build North Face Bike Park project. The Garfield County Federal Mineral Lease District mini-grant application requesting $25,000 for the park has been submitted.

• CDOT advertised the Highway 133 improvement project on Feb. 27. The bid deadline is March 20. CDOT is still planning to begin construction on the project in April.

• Public Works and the Utilities Department are planning this spring’s ditch maintenance program. Water is turned into the ditch system on April 15.

• The street crew continues to battle with potholes. “We are seeing some areas, especially on Hendrick Road, where the top ½ inch of the asphalt is unraveling. This is also caused by the freeze/thaw cycles we are going through.”

• The street crew has the street sweeper out daily.

• The town continues to receive applications for the new arborist position. The advertisements will run through March 12.

• The 5 Point Film Festival is expected to submit a rental agreement for the recreation center for April 24-27.

• Registration is open for the summer youth baseball and softball, men’s and coed adult softball, and the new adult outdoor sand volleyball league.

• The Planning Commission interviewed Ken Harrington at the Feb. 27 meeting. At that meeting, the commission formed a recommendation to the board that the first alternate be moved to a regular member, that the second alternate become the first alternate and that Harrington be installed as the second alternate.

This will be placed on an upcoming Board of Trustees agenda.

TUESDAY Feb. 25 At 4:05 p.m. near the intersection of Third and Main, an officer responded to a call about “young men” running down the middle of the street. The officer contacted the young men and advised them not to “run in the middle of traffic.”

TUESDAY Feb. 25 At 4:47 p.m., police received a call from a citizen requesting help in locating their 17-year-old son.

WEDNESDAY Feb. 26 At 12:35 p.m., police received a report of a vehicle on the bike path near Highway 133 and Village Road. Police were unable to locate the vehicle.

WEDNESDAY Feb. 26 At 3 p.m., an employee at a downtown restaurant reported that an unknown person shot a window with a paint ball during lunch. Customers heard the strike but did not see anyone. It’s believed the paint ball came from someone driving by. There was no damage. The case is inactive.

Residents share “Obamacare” stories

By Trina Ortega Sopris Sun Correspondent March 31 marks the final deadline for individuals and families to enroll in a health care plan under the new Affordable Care Act. While many Carbondale residents have sifted through their options, others have yet to wade through the state system or make a decision on their health plan.

As planned, for some individuals and families Obamacare is a saving grace in terms of medical care and monthly premiums. For others, it’s been a cumbersome process without positive results, especially impacted by the higher premiums of a resort area. The Sopris Sun interviewed five Carbondale residents/families to see how they’ve fared under the Affordable Care Act. (Editor’s Note: Names have been changed to honor requests for anonymity).

Answer: I had Cigna for me and my three kids that was around $600 per month. My husband had to be on a separate policy because of pre-existing conditions that were very minor. His premium was around $275 per month. When we

went to add our fourth daughter to the Cigna policy it was going to be $1,200 for me and the kids, NOT including my husband — way out of our budget! For the last five months we have had supplementary insurance for all of us through Reserve National for around $630 per month because it is the most we could afford. However, this does not work well with kids who get sick and have to go to the doctor because all doctor visits and medication are out of pocket; it only covers major medical issues, which is not very practical with small children.

Q: Do you qualify for a subsidy under Obamacare?

A: After speaking with April at Martin Insurance Group, I applied at Connectforhealth.com and applied for assistance.

To my surprise, all four of my children were approved for CHP assistance. As far as myself and my husband, we make too much to qualify for assistance.

Q: Overall, how has this experience been?

A: After a very confusing and timeconsuming process — making many calls, being redirected and put on hold for over an hour so I could try to find out what the new coverage means — my husband and I ended up staying on our supplementary insurance through Reserve National.

Singing a happy tune

Congregants, guests and visitors donated $2,457 at last Sunday’s Two Rivers Unitarian Universalists special music service to raise funds to pay off the Third Street Center’s Kawai “small grand” piano. That total is $342 more than was needed and will be used to tune and maintain the black beauty. The service included music from Jimmy Byrne, Lisa Dancing-Light and the TRUU Children’s Chorus. Dancing-Light was instrumental in bringing the piano to the Third Street Center in 2012.

She had met someone in Glenwood Springs interested in making the piano available to a community venue and contributed $5,000 to the cause, which got the $10,000 piano on a truck and toward the TSC Calaway Room.

Dancing-Light herself had long dreamed of donating a piano to such a public venue and after the Third Street Center opened in 2010 realized the Calaway Room was the perfect place. The rest, as they say, is now history.

Start thinking dandelions This year’s Dandelion Day is May 10 and the planning committee says it could use some help. All those interested in contributing to Carbondale’s creative community celebration of sustainability and spring are invited to attend a meeting at the Third Street Center from 7 to 9 p.m. on March 12. However, the plans I was looking at were going to be around $700 per month for just the two of us with a crazy-high deductible and out of pocket expenses. So I am relieved our children are covered but as far as the rest goes, I think it stinks.

A; First, a quick note. I almost exclusively use “alternative” care, including monthly preventive visits to the chiropractor and occasional acupuncture treatments to address minor complaints.

Those services were covered by plans I had prior in Oregon, where I lived before moving here. I take no prescription drugs.

In other words, I’m a major outlier at 61! The health care system is not set up for people like me. Most recently, I had a high-deductible plan with CIGNA, which covered nothing until the $5,000 deductible had been met. … I considered it just a catastrophic coverage plan. I did not make a single claim in the year-plus that I was covered. That plan was costing me $392 per month in 2013; the rate went up to $515 as of Jan. 1.

Q: Did you qualify for subsidies?

A: Yes. And I will even if my income doubles because I’ll still be under the threshold.

Q: How have you fared under Obamacare?

A: Now, under the Affordable Care Act, I have just switched (effective Feb. 1) to a “Silver” Rocky Mountain Health Care Plan with a premium of $262.40 per month and much better coverage. The deductible is $1,500, and I will pay a $40 co-pay when I visit a primary care physician and $60 when I see a specialist, with RMHC picking up the rest. I do expect my income to go up this year, so I’ll no doubt see an increase in my monthly rate (or a decrease in my subsidy, however you want to slice that), but I still expect to do much better, both on cost and coverage, than I was doing before the ACA. Q: Did you have assistance wading through the system?

A: I started off getting help from Martin Insurance — they had helped me set up my CIGNA plan and, to their credit, they called me way back last spring to alert me that I might qualify for a subsidy when the ACA kicked in. Without that, I probably would never have realized that I should look into it. So, I met with Karen there, and she laid out the process and gave me some good guidance. I didn’t feel I needed her help stepping through the application, so I did that on my own.

Q: Advice for others?

A: Consult with a broker who understands the ACA (as Karen at Martin does).

A: We are considering going with no coverage because we cannot afford to pay monthly premiums of $860 as well as “everyday” medical, vision and dental visits. We have not decided if that is the best option with two young children, so we cashed out on one of our IRAs to help us through this first year. That should give you an idea of how we are faring under the Affordable Care Act. Not sure what the smartest plan is: draining our IRAs, savings and college funds to pay for office visits plus monthly premiums or risk having to pay exorbitant hospital bills

Q: Thoughts on the Affordable Care Act? A; This conversation is definitely a nationwide conversation. I have a freelance single female friend in Austin, Texas, who’s better off with Obamacare because the rates are better there. It’s so clear that being categorized as a resort area is impacting our ability to have coverage [because the premiums are higher]. Yes, we are anchored by a resort activity but the people who live in this valley service the resort activity. I think there is an important distinction from the state aspect — it’s a resort but if you punish the people who are making the resort run, you’re shooting yourself in the foot. I understand the spirit of Obamacare, but it missed the mark considerably.

A: For years, my wife and I had group insurance through our small business. It was just the two of us as a “group.” Be-

cause of pre-existing conditions, it was very expensive. The last time premium had been increased to $2,300 per month.

To pay more than $2,000 for premium — that’s nuts; that’s more than a mortgage.

So we kept moving around, changing carriers, getting a little better deal. Then we qualified for Cover Colorado, [the nowdefunct state-assistance plan for individuals with pre-existing conditions]. Then our premium was $1,600 but with much better coverage. That came out to be $823 per month for my wife, who needed a unique plan.

Q: Current coverage?

A: Under the Affordable Care Act, she’s paying $250 for a plan that is at least as good. And I would be paying the same if I needed a plan, but I’m now on Medicare.

So we moved around, changed carriers, got a little better deal. Now our premium is $1,600 but with much better coverage.

Q: Did you qualify for subsidies?

A: Yes. Q: Did you seek help in wading through the system?

A: We didn’t use a broker. The first thing you have to do is qualify for a subsidy or get rejected by Medicaid. That’s a little bit of a pain. Once you get rejected, you get an authorization number and look through the plans. Shopping for a plan on the state website is easy.

Q: How have you fared under the Affordable Care Act? A; It’s definitely saving a bunch of money, so that’s a good thing.

Re-1 slates visioning meetings Sopris Sun Staff Report The Roaring Fork School District is organizing another round of community meetings in Carbondale, Basalt and Glenwood Springs as part of the district’s ongoing visioning process.

The Carbondale meeting will be held on March 12 at 6 p.m. at Crystal River Elementary School.

More than 300 Carbondale community members and teachers participated in the visioning meetings this past fall. In January, the Re-1 school board approved a new draft mission statement and a series of “Core Commitments” based on the information gathered from the fall community meetings in Carbondale, Basalt and Glenwood Springs.

While the district website refers to the new mission statement and core commitments as “drafts,” school board president Matt Hamilton told The Sopris Sun, “The board agreed to the spirit of the mission and core commitments with the understanding that the broad concepts would not change, although specific words might be tweaked.”

The long list of Core Commitments goes far beyond a narrow definition of academic achievement. The list includes a commitment to teacher empowerment; a commitment to providing “meaningful, engaging, experiential learning opportunities;” and a commitment to students’ character development (e.g., “Our students will develop resilience, determina-

One of the goals of this next round of community meetings is to get community input as to whether these core commitments accurately reflect the hopes and desires that people expressed in the fall community meetings.

The two other goals the district has set for the March meetings are to get feedback from the community on the work that has been done so far on the district’s strategic plan, and to discuss ideas around community engagement and measuring student success.

The district will be holding similar meetings with teachers and staff in each of the three communities to address these same three goals.

The format of the March meetings will be similar to the format of the community meetings this past fall: both small group and large group dialogues facilitated by the Denver-based group The Civic Canopy. This next round of community meetings will focus on four key themes: academic performance, student character development, teacher/talent development, and parent and community engagement in our schools and district.

Going “Down the Rabbit Hole” takes a community

Have you heard that buzzing sound around town? It’s not bees, or birds, and it sounds kind of like, “I got to go! I am late for fashion show rehearsal,” or “I can’t come over, I have to finish sewing my line for fashion show,” and even “Oh! I’ve got to sign up to volunteer for the fashion show!”

That’s right.

It is Fashion Show season Carbondale.

If you haven’t yet heard the buzz you will be sure to hear it during the next two weeks as your neighbors, co-workers, and friends make up the cast of 80 models and performers, 28 designers, and 50-plus volunteers who have joined the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities in making preparations for the sixth annual Green Is The New Black Fashion Extravaganza. The show takes place March 14-15 at the Carbondale Recreation Center and is an extraordinary sum of many, many moving parts.

In its 6th year, Green is the New Black has grown from a scrappy small-town show to something much larger. This year’s show, “Down The Rabbit Hole,” has ignited a creative spark in an unparalleled number of community artists.

“You would not believe the diversity of artistic talent pouring out of the

woodwork to contribute to the making of ‘Down The Rabbit Hole,’ with textile, digital, and fine art along with film and dance,” said CCAH/New Black Director Amy Kimberly. “The collaborative spirit between the community and the arts is what make the show so magical!” And it is the community that makes the show not just possible, but powerful.

Volunteers

Volunteer models and dancers are the most steeped in the creative process and hard work that brings the show to “ready, set, go!” The dancers have been rehearsing twice a week since December and the models have been practicing up to three times a week since the beginning of February.

With the time and energy required with each performer, any model will tell you that the incentive to participate lies in the opportunity to meet new people, to be involved in such a huge collaborative project, to wear interesting clothes, and well … to also perform!

Wendy Stewart has been participating in the fashion show since it first started six years ago. She continues to be a part of the show in order to meet the extraordinary people that participate. Stewart said she feels that models “bring their own beauty, energy, and creative expression that make the show great!”

There simply isn’t any “new” water available from the Colorado River to meet future needs of the Front Range.

If the Colorado Water Plan is to honestly incorporate Colorado’s values of “a strong environment that includes healthy watersheds, rivers and streams, and wildlife” it has to address what our degraded rivers and streams

really need. It must also face the reality of diminishing flows. We can no longer wave an engineering magic wand over the Colorado River.

It will take new thinking and new ideas if we hope to honor Colorado’s core values through water. As Einstein said, “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

Colorado looks to a future that includes vibrant, sustainable cities and viable, productive agriculture and recre-

ation blessed by truly healthy rivers and watersheds. It won’t be easy, but it can be done.

Seizing a last chance Dear Editor:

When this issue hits the stands I’ll already be hard at work for the Post Independent. Most board members have not found it necessary to explain their departure at the end of their tenure, but when someone who has been involved with The Sopris Sun since its inception moves on, some comment is probably in order.

I intend to bring every bit of passion I’ve had covering local news for this paper to my new role at the PI, but that by no means reflects on my respect and affection for the Sun. Were it not for the conflict of interest and the limits of my energy, I would have stayed with the newspaper I have watched grow from an idea to an established periodical.

If you Googled the Sun in early 2009, the rudimentary website I set up for the fledgling paper came in fifth or sixth behind a slew of articles on our enterprise. The idea of a non-profit community newspaper struck a chord in an era when many big publications were closing.

It still should. The Sopris Sun’s first five years are just the beginning. The only limit to its potential is the

support of the community. Each time someone writes a check, advertises, submits an unclassified, sends us a picture, volunteers as a writer or attends an event, they’re contributing directly to community journalism. Every extra cent goes to produce more content, add more pages and increase web outreach.

I know the community has heard this before. I’d simply like to seize my last chance to remind Carbondale that a donation to The Sopris Sun is really an investment.

It will become what you make of it.

Dear Editor: Hello, my name is Ali Wade and I wanted to inform you of a fundraiser I am hosting in my late pound puppy’s honor.

I adopted Tucker almost 14 years ago from a Carbondale shelter that is no longer in existence when I was in eighth grade. He was an incredible, fearless min-pin mix who nursed me through 10 different surgeries.

Throughout his life he survived two fox attacks (one of which left his nine-pound body covered with over 80 stitches and staples as well as five drain tubes). He ate Decon, a case of mini chocolate Clif bars, a case of Clif shot blocks, and basically anything else he could get his paws on.

Tucker escaped from every single home I have ever lived in, several times, despite extensive security systems including an invisible fence.

While I was living in Aspen he managed to safely cross Highway 82 and spend the night in the Aspen Animal Shelter at least twice. One time he even managed to make it all the way to New Castle. Needless to say, Tucker was a survivor and he changed many of my friends’ opinions of “small dogs.”

In his honor I will be collecting donations for CARE animal rescue. Tuckerpalooza will be held at Carbondale Beer Works from 4 to 7 p.m. on March 9.

Pajama drive a success

Dear Editor: The Children’s Rocky Mountain School just completed the third annual valley-wide Great Pajama Drive. We collected 165 pairs of pajamas (newborn to adult sizes), which will be paired with a book from The Family Visitor Program and distributed to families in need. “All My Sons”: Fraternity, fury in a backyard

By Barbara Dills Sopris Sun Correspondent The tagline for Thunder River Theater’s 19th season is “Not Just a Place, But Where It Takes You.” It’s a motto the company lives up to and more in its current, stunning production of Arthur Miller’s gripping 1947 play “All My Sons.”

The setting throughout is an allAmerican backyard in what could be any post-World War II small city in, say, Ohio, Pennsylvania or Indiana. But the story that unfolds onstage transports and transforms, with themes and implications as relevant today as they were when Miller crafted this unflinching investigation of the American Dream more than 60 years ago.

The Keller family — father Joe (Kent Reed), his wife Kate (Valerie Haugen) and son Chris (David Pulliam) — is plagued by a dark secret, namely Joe’s cover-up of his personal involvement in the death of 21 fighter pilots during the war and subsequent fingering of his business partner and next-door neighbor for the crime.

Miller loosely based the play on the true story of an Ohio woman who turned in her father for supplying faulty machine parts to the military. Contributing to a palpable unease onstage is the fact that Joe and Kate’s other son, Larry, an Air Force pilot himself, has gone missing in action overseas, unheard from for over

three years. Mother Kate passionately refuses to believe he’s dead. Brother Chris has designs on Larry’s former fiancé. As you can tell, the plot gets interesting fast.

Writing in his original 1947 New York Times review of “All My Sons,” Brooks Atkinson described Miller as a genius at portraying the “tangled loyalties of human beings.” The play pivots on that question of loyalty and the degree to which the various characters choose the moral high ground or sacrifice it to their own self-interests.

Thunder River Theatre Executive Artistic Director Lon Winston calls out this theme in the program notes: “As part of the play’s immorality is the tribal impulse that allows a man to think only of himself and his family rather than his duties as a citizen of the world. In business and for the sake of one’s family’s well-being, anything goes.”

The first act opens just after a blustery storm has taken down a tree planted as a memorial to Larry, the missing son. That fallen tree is much more than a prop; it is a powerful symbol, a metaphor for Larry’s absence, Joe’s moral failings, and the unraveling of the entire Keller family. One of the things that makes “All My Sons” so compelling and relevant is Miller’s knack for providing such layers of meaning in his plays.

Other than what appeared to this reviewer to be a somewhat slow start by a

few of the actors on opening night, the cast and crew outdo themselves in this presentation of “All My Sons.” Kent Reed’s rich and nuanced portrayal of the complicated Joe Keller is matched by David Pulliam’s extraordinary Chris. Valerie Haugen embodies Kate with all the talent and force we’ve come to expect from her — and which continues to amaze. Thunder River newcomer Sarah Dale Payne, a somewhat recent transplant to the Roaring Fork Valley from Los Angeles, gives a stunning debut performance as Ann, the object of the Keller brothers’ shared affections. The other players fill their roles with equal strength and conviction.

For an evening of exceptional artistry, humor (yes, humor, as in Joe’s line “We’ll get her so drunk tonight, we’ll all get married” or Kate’s “You can’t fool me, I diapered you”) and the twists and turns of a thriller, “All My Sons” is not to be missed. Eat well before you go. The play provides plenty of (moral) exercise.

While fascinating pictorials in National Geographic of adorned tribes tell our inner selves that the definition of beauty varies with culture, the need to belong to a “tribe” does not. Adhering to trends makes a person part of the tribe. Tattoos, once the mark of WWII service men and Marlon Brando-esque bad boys, have transcended into their own art form. Native Americans used feathered headdresses as marks of bravery and wisdom; lately, small feathers are common hair accessories. Can we compare the braided hair garlands of 1500’s Venetian women to the cascading dreadlocks we see now?

Maybe what’s so great about Carbondale’s fashion sense is that being part of the tribe means complete individualism and acceptance of that individualism.

The author David Sedaris gave a recent interview on the The Daily Show and he noted that while on his 56-city book tour, there were definite fashion trends in his audiences. San Franciscans were the most formally dressed, but in contrast, he found himself asking one woman at his book signing, “Is that your best Count Chocula T-shirt?” Perhaps we can entice Mr. Sedaris to Carbondale the next time he speaks at The Wheeler Opera House so he can appreciate our fellow Bondalians as the “fashionistas” they truly are.

Maybe our tribe will break the mold.

The negative effect of huge trucks traveling through downtown Glenwood Springs, Midland Avenue and up and down Four-Mile road on a daily basis on the city’s infrastructure, recreation-based economy, and private property values cannot be overstated. There are property owners in Parachute that claim their property values have dropped as much as 75 percent after their street became a haul route.

I would also like to thank Garfield County Commissioner John Martin for speaking out on this issue in his letter to U.S. Representative Scott Tipton, urging him to support legislation protecting the Thompson Divide and paving the way for a market-based solution to be reached. Being a Western man, John understands the value of the land in the Thompson Divide to ranchers and the property values of those of us who live up Four Mile.
