First Friday gets back to roots By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Writer irst Friday on March 6 gets back to its roots as an art walk, but also steps in a new direction by officially encouraging folks to shop local. “Did you know that ¼ of every penny of sales tax collected in Garfield County funds your public libraries?” said a recent library district press release. To create awareness of how shopping locally can help the district put more books on shelves and offer other services, shoppers are invited to bring sales receipts from Carbondale businesses to the library from March 6 through April 3 for entry in drawings for goods and services from local businesses. The shop-local program is being organized and promoted by the Carbondale Branch Library, Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, Roaring Fork Leadership and businesses throughout town. On the art walk front, according to the chamber of commerce, offerings, events and venues include: • The Carbondale Clay Center from 6 to 9 p.m. with “Pairings” at 201A Main Street (across from Fatbelly Burgers); • CCAH’s “Mohawks, Tattoos & Street Art” from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Launchpad; • A demonstration by art teacher Maurice Reed from 5 to 8 p.m. at European Antiques; • Live painting from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Kahhak Gallery (St. Patrick’s Day will be the subject); • Mary Noone will conduct a painting demonstration at Main Street Gallery from 5 to 8 p.m.; • Mousai Gallery features interior décor inspired by Mother Nature, featuring James and Cheri Vilona; • Sopris Liquor & Wine hosts an Italian wine tasting from 5 to 6:30 p.m.; • Strange Imports features SAW potter Steven Colby from 5 to 8 p.m.; • Susan’s Flowers hosts a special event from 5 to 8 p.m.; • Main Street Spirits holds a tasting for chardonnays, cabernets and 2 Gingers Irish Whiskey from 5 to 7 p.m.; • Crystal River Meats brings its farmer’s market trailer to the Village Smithy from 4 to 8 p.m.; • The Hair Bar in La Fontana Plaza is offering a “blow out special;” • ACME Healing Arts in Sopris Plaza is throwing a Home Grown First Friday Jam from 7 to 9 p.m. with live music, door prizes and cannabis info.

Poetry Slam packs ’em in

Photos by Jane Bachrach

The second Youth Poetry Slam at the Third Street Center — presented by Aspen Words — drew a crowd of 300 to witness valley youth sharing their work from the stage. Thirtytwo students performed original poems and another 30 would have done the same if there had been time. The top four scorers in the slam and four other students selected by visiting poets Myrlin Hepworth, Logan Phillips and Mercedez Holtry were then invited to appear on stage at the Wheeler Opera House on Saturday.

In a sampling of other action around town: • Harmony Scott Jewelry Design at the east end of Main Streets holds a “spin to win” casino night; • Steve’s Guitars in the Dinkel Building

presents Valle Musico at 8:30 p.m.; • The Crystal Theatre presents “Still Alice,” staring recent Oscar winner Julianne Moore;

• The Cherry Creek Singers bring traditional Lakota drumming and singing to the Third Street Center Round Room at 5:30 and 7 p.m. (donations are appreciated).
