John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent ocal industrial hemp activists recently announced that “things are happening quickly” with regard to the idea of legalizing hemp nationwide for cultivation, processing and use in making a wide range of products.

The announcement noted the introduction earlier this year of two bills in the U.S. Congress aimed at de-listing hemp, a plant that is similar to marijuana but is not psychoactive, from its current federal status as a dangerous drug.

The most recent newsletter of the Colorado Hemp Education Association (CHEA), based in Carbondale, declares, “We need everyone to be contacting U.S. senators and representatives in the next few months. And not just in Colorado. If you have family and friends in other states, it’s time to get them involved, too.”

Remembering Ralph Nader and his Raiders

By Patrick Hunter If you have seen any of my previous columns here in The Sopris Sun, you might know that the raison d’etre for the column is my study at Colorado Mountain College for a BA in sustainability studies. The idea was to communicate to the greater public the on-goings of our local institution of higher learning. A second idea was to expose the public to some of the valuable information contained in the program. It’s a little funny — any time I tell someone that we study “sustainability” they ask, “What?” Generally, the concept is this: What do we need to do now to be sure our kids and grandkids will have a planet they can live on?

Equally vague is the name of a course I’m now taking called “Social Entrepreneurship.” Honestly, I am getting tired of typing out that name. It reminds me of the time President George W. Bush said: “The trouble with the French is that they don’t have a word for ‘entrepreneurship’”. I wish they had another word for it, like “startup,” which entrepreneurship sort of is. Essentially, it means starting a business from scratch —typically a non-profit — whose goal is to improve the lives of people.

We were introduced to several start-ups this valley. Raising a Reader strives to pro-

vide reading materials and assistance to pre-school children throughout the valley.

The Youth Recovery Center at Valley View Hospital helps addicted adolescents move on with their lives. Aspen T.R.E.E. works to connect young people and the greater community back to nature with hands-on experience. All of these count on a strong spirit of altruism and volunteerism. Ayn Rand would never understand.

in 1965. The book revealed the handling and safety problems of the early versions of the Chevrolet Corvair. The car was the General Motors answer to the invasion of smaller and sportier cars from Europe; in particular, the Volkswagen “bug” and the Porsche. Those cars were “cousins” in design, and they all had rear-engines with independent axles. American drivers, unfortunately, were not familiar with the different handling the cars presented called “over steer.” That is when the back of the car breaks loose first in a skid. In general, American corporations were not very concerned about their products’ safety. Nader, and his gang of young, committed and socially conscious lawyers called “Nader’s Raiders,” went after big American corporations with a vengeance. They were the first to do so. They were fearless.

Life of dedication We were given an assignment to pick and write about a famous social entrepreneur. I chose Ralph Nader. I happened to be wearing an old T-shirt from his 2000 campaign. If you had any doubts about my politics, now you know. Actually, I would prefer a presidential ballot like they have in Australia: “None of the Above” is always one of the choices. They have a much higher voter turnout.

Many people, especially younger people, think of Nader as the guy who gave the presidency to George Bush in 2000. What people don’t know about is his life of dedication to people’s safety, their livelihoods and to fairness in America.

Reconsidering the iPhone Dear Editor: The iPhone is a great idea to some people, but a terrible idea to me, Sadie Shoemaker.

The iPhone has been taking over the human brain and also the world. People spend more time on their phones than socializing with the people around them. I mean seriously, would you rather spend time with your phone or spend time with friends, family, animals, playing outside, and being active?

Take a moment and ask yourself. Am I spending more time on my phone or hanging out with my friends and family? I’m spending more time with my friends and family, and so should you.

There are a few reasons why you shouldn’t spend time on your phone, but I’m going to focus on the main reason. It’s much more fun to play and talk to people than to sit down and stare at a screen. Some day, for one whole day, don’t look at a screen and see what it feels like. Take my advice, your life will be much better.

Responding to Harvey Dear Editor: This is in response to Allyn Harvey’s

“keep-a-critical-eye” opinion on the Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District in the Post Independent.

Harvey ends his perceived mismanagement of the department’s budgeting with: “millions of tax dollars have been spent … to provide the same level of service for remote areas like Missouri Heights as in densely populated areas like Carbondale, Redstone and West Bank.”

First, what “millions” spent? The fire district’s annual property tax revenue is $1.5 million a year — total.

I write about local history and I know that CRFPD was organized by volunteers in the 1950s to fight fires and that most of this district’s taxpaying populace WAS rural until little more than a decade ago.

Second, Harvey may not realize another loaded insinuation when criticizing a used 100-foot ladder truck by stating “tallest building [in district] is about 35 feet.” District taxpayers living on hillsides around here have a more appreciative view of that fire-fighting equipment and welcome the reduced insurance rates for the ISO rating the fire district has.

From the 1950s on, CRFPD funding is solely by property tax mill levy and has served this district’s community well for everyone’s 5.9 mills portion of tax revenue — comparatively little in actual dollars for life-saving services.

The fire district consists of about 65 vol-

unteers and 18 paid staff to handle scheduling, training and general business management. Its leadership/management team has provided good equipment and excellent training opportunities for volunteers to provide essential public services in ALL of its field stations. Volunteers’ time is valued and respected and some eventually moving into paid positions. Notably, more than half of them live outside Carbondale’s core, knowing full well their residential “remoteness.”

What’s changed? In the last seven to eight years, a recession tanking property values that cut CRFPD budget 40 percent.

At the very same time many more people moving into Carbondale from Aspen and other big cities like Denver, Dallas and other places expecting — nay, demanding — professional emergency services like they get “back home.”

What else has changed? How many fire calls does the fire district get today? Most all are ambulance calls requiring certified EMTs, rather than volunteer paramedic/fire-fighters.

Today, there are, at minimum, three emergency calls to the Carbondale station 24/7, 365 days a year. “Don’t understand a trade-off?” What are you really saying, Mr. Carbondale trustee? And to whom?

Trustees OK funding for CLEER and CORE; capped at $100,000 John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Carbondale’s elected leaders on Tuesday formally hired two regional energy-efficiency firms to keep the town on-pace to fulfill its 2020 Energy Targets, which include helping local homeowners, businesses and the government to install energy-saving equipment.

Overall, the contract is part of Carbondale’s ongoing efforts toward reducing the town’s “carbon footprint” and its contribution to global climate change through greenhouse-gas emissions, all of which are reflected in the town’s 2020 Energy Targets plan adopted several years ago.

The contract, with the Clean Energy Economy for the Region (CLEER) and the Community Office of Resource Efficiency (CORE), carries with it a spending cap of $100,000.

The funds for the contract are to be covered by the town’s annual receipt of energyimpact funds — specifically, money from mineral lease fees and mineral severance taxes, which are paid by energy companies doing business in Garfield County.

Documents included in the trustees’

packet outlining the contract lay out a “scope of work” with such specific projects as converting streetlights around town to LED lamps, installing energy-saving devices and procedures at the town’s water and wastewater treatment plants, and possibly putting a permanent-funding question to voters in 2016.

Among the provisions set forth in the work plan is the earmarking of $62,000 toward a low-income program intended to “significantly upgrade 37 income-qualified homes to reduce their energy bills and improve the comfort of these homes.”

To qualify for this assistance, a household’s income must be at or below 80 percent of the area’s median income, which for a family of four amounts to $59,100 annually.

The plan also calls for spending $6,000 this year on a cut-rate Energy Smart Assessment for up to 20 town staff members, a provision that prompted Trustee Pam Zentmyer to ask whether that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money.

Town Manager Jay Harrington, in a telephone interview on Wednesday, said the trustees plan to take another look at the discount for town employees in June, “to see how it’s being used” and possibly modify

the plan if it is deemed unsatisfactory.

The contract also calls for spending $20,000 on planning for a 2016 ballot question, which would be aimed at setting up some kind of permanent funding for energy-related projects in town. The planning would include education and polling of local voters to “gauge public interest” in the permanent-funding idea.

The trustees, at Tuesday’s meeting, unanimously approved the contract, but with some added suggestions.

Trustees Allyn Harvey (acting as mayor pro-tem in Mayor Stacey Bernot’s absence) and John Hoffmann wanted to be sure the low-income program had some provision for Spanish-language outreach to ensure participation by Hispanic residents.

And Zentmyer suggested the low-income program “needs to bridge the gap between renters and homeowners” to provide benefit to renters as well as property owners.

The trustees were assured by CLEER program director Erica Sparhawk that these kinds of considerations are being incorporated into the program.

In other action the trustees: • Agreed to apply to the Garfield County Federal Mineral Leasing District fund for a

grant to buy two electronic Variable Message Signs for use on street-related projects on Highway 133 and throughout town; • Approved an expansion of the offices of the Green Hill Labs retail marijuana testing facility on Village Road; • Approved a plan for street-side dining at restaurants in the 200 block of Main Street, continuing a program that began in 2014 and involved the construction of outside-dining platforms adjacent to the Phat Thai and Allegria restaurants that extends into the Main Street right of way.

• Approved a resolution supporting a grant application to the Great Outdoor Colorado agency, which doles out money from the state’s lottery proceeds, to fund a restoration and improvements project for a town-owned 1.4-mile stretch of the Crystal River as it passes through the River Valley Ranch subdivision.

• Approved special events liquor licenses for the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities Fashion Show on March 13-14 at the town recreation and community center; and the Carbondale Clay Center’s annual fundraiser, to be held at a vacant retail space at 201-A Main Street on Oct. 6.

Law enforcement authorities ID suspect in Feb.16 murder John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Law enforcement authorities on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant on first-degree-murder charges for Arturo Navarrete-Portillo, 46, of Carbondale, for the alleged killing of his wife, Maria Carminda Portillo-Amaya, 30, at the couple’s home in Carbondale on Feb. 16.

Navarrete-Portillo remains hospitalized in Grand Junction for treatment of what have been called “non-life-threatening” injuries sustained when he crashed his Toyota 4-Runner into the back of an empty livestock truck, on Highway 133 south of town, at about 7 a.m. on the morning his wife was either stabbed or slashed to death with a bladed weapon of some kind.

Police and the lead-investigating agency, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation [CBI], have yet to reveal whether a suspected murder weapon has been found, and if it has, what kind of weapon it is.

According to a statement issued by CBI public information officer Susan Medina on Tuesday afternoon, the arrest warrant was issued by an unnamed Ninth Judicial District Court judge and immediately sealed, so that the contents of the warrant’s supporting documentation cannot be made public at this time.

The reason for sealing the warrant was not stated in the CBI release, other than a statement that the case remains under investigation, nor was there any indication whether the warrant will become public information once Navarrete-Portillo is deemed sufficiently recovered from his injuries to be formally arrested and moved to the Garfield County Jail to face the charge

against him.

The murder came to light after Carbondale police and emergency crews responded, at 7:15 a.m. on Feb. 16, to the accident on Highway 133 that sent Navarrete-Portillo to the hospital.

While being airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Navarrete-Portillo reportedly told the flight crew that he had killed his wife that morning at their home, an apartment on Cooper Place east of Highway 133 on the southwest side of town That message, after an as-yet unexplained delay, was relayed to the Carbondale police at approximately 1:45 p.m., according to Police Chief Gene Schilling.

Speaking to a reporter by telephone on Feb. 22, Schilling said he did not know exactly how the relay of information occurred on Feb. 16, only that his department was informed by a dispatcher about the injured man’s statement and that his officers went to the area described by the man to look for the victim.

The information, Schillng said, “came from somewhere, at some point in time, at the hospital in Grand Junction.” He explained that the information had a tortured path to follow before getting to Carbondale, through agencies that likely included the Grand Junction Police Department, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities have said the federal Department of Homeland Security also is involved in the investigation, though there is no indication that the DHS was part of the chain of organizations receiving communi-

Bike tour returning to Carbondale Sopris Sun Staff Report Bikes seemed to be on the minds of Carbondale officials this week, judging from the weekly memo sent to town trustees and staff on Feb. 20 by Town Manager Jay Harrington.

In the memo, Harrington noted that the Bicycle Tour of Colorado will once again be visiting Carbondale on June 22, bringing more than 1,000 cyclists on an 88-mile leg of the tour from Leadville and over Independence Pass. The cyclists will overnight in Carbondale at Roaring Fork High School, which is to be Bike Tour Headquarters while they’re here, before heading out for the 64-mile leg over McClure Pass and on to Hotchkiss in the North Fork Valley. The last time the tour came to Carbondale was in 2013.

In other cycling news, Harrington reported that the Carbondale Bicycle Polo Club, which at one time used the grounds to the south of the Third Street Center for their games, will be meeting with the Parks and Recreation Commission in March “to discuss their need for a designated park location and time slot for their bike polo games.” The group’s former game field at the Third Street Center is n ow the site of a community garden.

In general recreation news, Harrington noted that the Youth Basketball League finished its regular season last week, and that the different age groups in the league will hold their 2015 tournament this week and next.

Additionally, the Adult Volleyball League is in the midst of its end-of-season tournament, with play scheduled to wrap up on March 2. At that point, Harrington reported, the league will return to Open Gum Drop-In (sic) pick-up games. Results of the league tournament will be posted at www.quickscores.com/carbondalerec.

The town’s recreation and community center continues to be

a popular location for private birthday parties, having been the site for three Sunday parties over the past two weeks.

The recreation center also is working up to the start of its new beginners’ fitness class, now named Fitness 360, which will begin on March 2 with a class from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. The class is being conducted in collaboration with the Manaus Fund, which has offices in the Third Street Center.

As Carbondale readies itself for spring, tennis nets have already been installed for the season at the Darien Tennis & Pickleball Courts at North Face Park. Harrington issued “a big thank-you” to the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District, with facilities adjacent to North Face Park, which will hose down and clean the courts using a tanker truck until the park’s water system is turned on in mid-April.

The streets crew, Harrington wrote, was continuing work installing electrical conduit along Village Road for new streetlights, and other tasks including work on traffic signs, trail maintenance and street cleaning.

Meanwhile, public works staff is reviewing the existing conditions along 3rd Street in preparation for a streetscape project to include improved drainage, pedestrian safety and vehicle parking.

Planning for improvements continues along Barber Drive, in response to neighborhood complaints, including an inventory that revealed work needs to be done on wat er valves and manholes and other “minor work” to be done once the project gets underway.

A joint presentation is planned for March 6, sponsored by the town, River Valley Ranch and the Aspen Valley Land Trust, concerning a conceptual plan to “restore a portion of the Crystal River,” Harrington wrote. Exact times and other details will be forthcoming, he wrote.

SATURDAY, Feb. 14: At 11:54 a.m., police encountered a man representing himself as an employee with the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office. According to police, the man was “delusional” and was taken to the Garfield County Jail.

SUNDAY, Feb. 15: At 7:13 p.m., police responded to a report of the death of a 52-year-old male at an address on Maroon Place. Death was believed to have occurred shortly before police were called. The man’s identity is being withheld by police pending notification of his family.

MONDAY, Feb. 16: At 7:15 a.m., police showed up at a two-vehicle accident on Highway 133, involving a Toyota 4-Runner and an empty livestock truck, which required emergency medical transport for the driver of the Toyota. The driver of the livestock was not injured. The Toyota driver later informed the crew of a Flight 4 Life aircraft that he had killed his wife in an apartment in Carbondale, and where that apartment is located. Police found the victim, Maria Carminda Portillo-Amaya, 30, of Carbondale, but had not released the name of the suspect or much else about the case as of Feb. 23, and the suspect remained in custody at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction under treatment for serious injuries sustained in the accident.

By Lynn Burton Sopris Sun Staff Writer If you like your Westerns grounded more in fact than in Hollywood’s notion of how truth might have played out under a ďŹ lm director’s megaphone, then consider “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kidâ€? for your big-screen must-see list.

The 1969 ďŹ lm staring Paul Newman and Robert Redford is not just loosely based on the life and times of turn-of-thecentury train/bank robbers Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Some scenes could have been lifted straight from a diarist’s notes.

Take, for example, the two early scenes in which the same unlucky train clerk named Woodcock is all that stands between Cassidy’s Hole in the Wall gang and “Mr. E.H. Harriman’s� money. The incidents really happened. After Hole in the Wall outlaws blew open the train-car door with dynamite due to Woodcock’s loyalty to his employer (he wouldn’t open the door), the same thing happened again soon afterward.

For this and other historical details, the Guardian newspaper awarded “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid� a “history grade� of B, to go with its “entertainment grade� of an A-.

Noted photojournalist speaks In a 2013 New Yorker article, writer Dexter Filkins pointed out that Afghanistan has been at war since 1979 and during that time, entire generations of journalists, diplomats and aid workers Robert Nickelsberg have come and gone. “Not Robert Nickelsberg ‌ (he) has been returning regularly ‌ .â€? Nickelsberg, a contract photographer for Time magazine for the past 25 years, comes to the Roaring Fork Valley to discuss his recent book “Afghanistan: A Distant Warâ€? at Colorado Rocky Mountain School on March 2 at 7:30 p.m., and on March 4 the Carbondale Culture Club and the Aspen Institute (starting with a reception at 5:30 p.m.). Nickelsberg, who lives in New York City, was based in New Delhi, India from 1988 to 2000. Visit his website (robertnickelsberg.com) and you’ll ďŹ nd 26 galleries of his photos that include images not just of Iraq, Afghanistan, India and other foreign locales, but also Texas, Pennsylvania, Wyoming and California (gang violence). Nickelsberg is on a speaking tour of sorts, with recent appearances in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Boston.

So, how did an internationally known photojournalist come to land in the Roaring Fork Valley? It all started in Vermont in the mid-1970s, when he and Carbondale resident Davis Farrar were roommates following their days at the University of Vermont. Within a few months of moving in to share a house, Nickelsberg was off to cover conicts in El Salvador and elsewhere in Central America, Farrar said. “But we’ve stayed in touch.â€? About 15 years ago, Farrar even passed up on a hard-to-get permit to oat the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho in order to attend his friend’s wedding. “He still owes me a trip,â€? Farrar joked. Last summer, after Nickelsberg came out for daughter Hanna Farrar’s wedding, Davis started e-mailing local non-proďŹ ts and venues, asking if they might be interested

in bringing him out for some talks. Eventually CCAH forwarded a Farrar e-mail to Carbondale Culture Club cofounder Lisa Dancing Light. “I had a gut feeling about the e-mail which I cannot explain,â€? Dancing Light told The Sopris Sun. After doing some research, Dancing Light imagined him in a larger venue than the Culture Club. After numerous e-mails, and lining up a local benefactor to sponsor the trip, CRMS and the Aspen Institute stepped up to host Nickelsberg. “It slowly fell into place ‌ He (Nickelsberg) agreed to do the Culture Club as a favor to me, since I was able to connect him with these other venues.â€? Even once it got to the Carbondale Police Department, Schilling said, the information was vague.

“At some point, they said it was behind a (Phillips) 66 station,” Schilling explained.

But there are two Phillips 66 service stations that can be considered in the Carbondale area, he said — one, known as Carbondale Car Care, on Highway 133 a short distance south of the highway’s intersection with Main Street, and the other on a frontage road at Highway 82 and Garfield County Road 114 (the Colorado Mountain College turnoff).

Information continued to trickle in, Schilling said, including the location of the apartment building on Cooper Place, behind the Carbondale Car Care business, and a connection between the suspect’s name and the name of a resident of the apartment in question.

But when police got to the apartment, Schilling said, they encountered several people who were uninjured and, largely due to a language barrier between the Spanish-speaking residents and the English-speaking police, unable to help the officers figure things out.

The chief said his officers had checked out a second building when, at about 3:45 p.m., they encountered a woman who said she lived in the apartment the police pre-

viously had visited. Declining to escort the cops into the apartment, the woman agreed to look around and found the victim in one of the bedrooms.

Schilling confirmed that there were several “families” living in the apartment where the victim was found, apparently one family per bedroom, but was unable to say for certain if they were related to one another or from the same country of origin.

Asked whether police are concerned that the others living in the apartment did not report the murder, Schilling responded, “I would say at this point, no.”

According to a story in another newspaper, the victim and her assailant were new to the area, having recently moved into the apartment.

“I want to ensure the community that we are working closely with the CBI and the Ninth Judicial District Attorney’s office on this comprehensive investigation,” said Schilling, in a statement issued on Tuesday by the CBI. “Investigators continue to move forward and are addressing numerous questions connected with this alleged crime. It would not be appropriate to comment on specific elements at this time.”

Asked whether the man is subject to a “suicide watch” at St. Mary’s, Schilling said, “Not that I know of.”

Trustees continue UDC talks; “down-zoning”out

The Carbondale Board of Trustees is hopeful that revisions to the town’s zoning code, part of the ongoing Unified Development Code [UDC] process, will yield regulations that will simplify the town’s land-use review process without taking away any of the town’s control over how development proceeds here.

The UDC is an update of the town’s development-review codes, which have not been comprehensively rewritten since 1993, as well as an effort to “align” the land-use code and the zoning code with the town’s Comprehensive Plan, adopted in 2013.

During a work session on Feb. 17, the trustees heard from staff and members of the planning and zoning commission [P&Z] about a number of new and planned development projects in town, and according to one trustee the outlook is good.

“I think it makes sense,” said Trustee Frosty Merriott, “to simplify the process.”

He noted that he has served on the P&Z as well as on the board of trustees, and is well aware of the difficulties posed by the town’s old, convoluted set of regulations.

“I wouldn’t want to have to deal with all that,” he said, referring to the difficulties faced by anyone hoping to win approval for a project. “I would want it to be simple.”

Still, he noted, while the revision to the town’s codes is expected to be concluded

this year, one thing the new code would not do is down-zone any of the town’s existing neighborhoods.

Instead, Merriott said, the town is considering a reduction in the number of zone districts, from the current list of 23 to a number less than half that.

In the packet for the Feb. 17 meeting, the planning staff stated that the consultant for the UDC process, Clarion Associates, has proposed eliminating 12 zoning districts, some of which are specifically linked to certain projects or project areas.

“Some of those were just PUDs,” said Merriott, in reference to Planned Unit Developments that typically are associated with large-scale developments.

A PUD is created for the project and “overlayed” atop the underlying zoning, permitting the developer and the town to negotiate on aspects of development that might not have been approved based on stricter underlying zoning provisions but are considered desirable or acceptable in return for concessions from the developer on other aspects of the project.

The proposal to trim the number of zone districts in town, according to the Feb. 17 memo, is not what is commonly known as a “down-zoning,” but is strictly an attempt to trim and streamline the development review process. “[Owners of] properties that are currently in a zone district that will be phased

out (under the new code) will still be able to develop their property under their existing [pre-UDC] zoning,” the memo reads.

Merriott declined to characterize the zone-district reduction and other changes as an effort to alter what some have termed Carbondale’s reputation for being “unfriendly toward developers,” due to difficulties encountered by certain developments in recent years.

But he did concede that the changes reflect what might be termed a more accommodating attitude.

“I think they wouldn’t want to be (seen as) unfriendly to development,” Merriott said of the town government. “If someone’s got a good product, we would want it to come through the system” for review.

Regarding the town’s attitude toward development of large buildings today, versus in the past, Merriott noted, “The Dinkel Building wouldn’t be approved by our board,” because of its size, mass and height.

Welcome change Turning to another portion of the draft UDC, Merriott said one welcome change are revised procedures such as “sketch plans,” “pre-application meetings with staff,” and an expansion of the circumstances under which staff can approve or reject proposed projects.

Such procedures, Merriott said, are in-

tended to give the town and the developer a clearer understanding about the reception, from reviewing personnel and the public, prior to submission of a full application.

These changes have a potential to prevent costly battles between the town and the developer, Merriott said, adding that he supports these kinds of changes “as long as there’s an appeal process” for developers unhappy with the decisions made early in the review.

Merriott was broadly laudatory of the P&Z’s work, and the commission’s presentation to the trustees on Feb. 17.

“The whole presentation from P&Z was very thoughtful,” Merriott said of the meeting. “I think they’ve been really engaged with Clarion in the process, and I’m encouraged with the way this is coming forward.”

The zoning and code section of the UDC process is the second part of the overall effort, which began last fall with a look at “procedures and process” provisions of the existing code and moved on to the current “districts and uses” discussion.

The third part of the process, “development standards,” is to be discussed and reviewed later in the spring, including a public hearing planned for May. Information about the UDC is available at a special website, www.carbondaleudc.com.

Motorcyclists roll into Basalt starting on April 7

By Steve Jundt Easy riders are invited to hit the streets of Basalt on Tuesday evening, April 7, for the initial opening of a planned monthly event hosted by the town of Basalt. Basalt Chamber of Commerce CEO Robin Waters shared the results of an enthusiastic planning meeting held at Stubby's Sports Bar & Eatery. Attending the planning meeting with Waters were Janet Lohman, Dick Strahura (who authored the idea) Wally Dallenbach, Trent Castleberry, Paul Strokes and Vonda Williams.

"The participation of Wally and Peppy Dallenbach really brought this idea to fruition," said Waters. "The town's enthusiasm as well as local restaurant participation is going to make this a not-to-be-missed event."

Wally Dallenbach, a motor sports legend and longtime Basalt resident, has offered to host an upcoming leg of the event at his Dallenbach Ranch, located on the Frying Pan River. As well as being an Indianapolis 500 winner, Dallenbach is founder and president of the Colorado 500 Invitational charity motorcycle ride, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary this year.

Motorcycle Night will occur the first Tuesday of each month and will be hosted by a different participating

restaurant. All Basalt restaurants are invited to participate in rotation.

"Though we may have to tailor the event to the weather," said Waters, "we are already scheduling into December and have commitment from five local eateries."

Although it may not be an immediate alternative to the motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, Basalt Motorcycle Night is certain to attract a crowd of participants.

This grant will help RFA to continue our work, bringing awareness to issues that are causing the rapid decline of our native bird population.

We will use this grant to install an anti-reective ďŹ lm on one of RFTA’s new glass bus stops. In North America alone, over one billion birds are killed every year in glass collisions – usually the visiting migrants.

Dear Editor: We at the Buddy Program continue to be thankful for the contributions of time we receive from all our great volunteers. Thank you to Andreas Fischbacher (chef/owner of Allegria restaurant in Carbondale) for hosting a cooking class last week for 14 students enrolled in our LEAD Program (Leadership through Exploration, Action and Discovery). The LEAD group-mentoring program helps teens develop life skills while exploring hands-on activities alongside peers and caring adults. Under Andreas’s tutelage, students cooked eggplant parmesan, sausage and peppers, and Caesar salad. Eleven of them tried eggplant for the ďŹ rst time and loved it! Thank you Andreas and our other amazing volunteers and partners for taking time to share your talents and passions with local youth.
