Not itching here…

Let’s keep it that way The Sopris Sun just turned SEVEN! That’s a milestone the whole community can be proud of. Your nonprofit newspaper was founded in February 2009 at the depth of the recession, and we not only survived that bumpy road together, we have grown stronger every year, thanks to the generous support of our advertisers and donors and the dedication of our staff and board. Heck, with your help, we’ve made it to the infamous itch-point in a marriage!

That’s right. Statistics on the average lifespan of small nonprofits like The Sun are not readily available, but according to Wikipedia, the National Center for Health Statistics reports the following about marriage: “In 1922 the median duration of marriage that ended in divorce was 6.6. In 1974 the median duration was 7.5. In 1990 the median duration was 7.2. While these can fluctuate from year to year, the averages stay relatively close to the seven-year mark.”

We’ve made it to seven and the only itch we’re feeling is to make the paper even better. We remain faithful, as always, to you, dear readers. Here are some facts we’d like to share: • It costs us $1 to produce every print copy of The Sopris Sun. • We distribute roughly 235,000 copies of The Sun each year, all the way from West Glenwood to Aspen and Redstone. That’s 4,500 each week.

• 2,500 readers also access The Sopris Sun online each month. The latest issue is posted to www.soprissun.com on Wednesday evening each week.

• While 85 percent of our income comes from advertising (thank you advertisers!), we rely on individual and business donations from the community for an additional 12 percent (the other 3 percent is from grants). In 2016, that translates to about $30,000 in donations.

• It was first used to describe an inclination to become unfaithful after seven years of marriage in the play “The Seven Year Itch” by George Axelrod, and gained popularity following the 1955 film adaptation starring Marilyn Monroe and Tom Ewell.

• Predictably, Marilyn plays the temptress. Here’s one of her many great lines: “Hi. It’s me, don’t you remember? The tomato from upstairs.”

Thanks to Balog Dear Editor: Saturday night at Third Street Center I, along with 180 folks, attended the award-winning documentary “Chasing Ice” by environmental filmmaker James Balog.

Balong has risked his life to give us the visuals of the vastness of our major glaciers disappearing at an alarming rate on our planet. We would never see or know about this catastrophic event had he not done his research, mounting time-lapse cameras on several continents, monitoring the recession of these ancient bodies of ice. He shared his results, representing NASA, at the climate talks in Copenhagen and Paris. His passion for informing the public and policy makers will be helpful in sharing the urgent message of immediate action.

Sopris Lodge developers moving forward

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer The developers behind a planned senior citizen housing and living center in Carbondale, known as Sopris Lodge, said this week that they are only weeks away from submitting a formal development application to the town.

Abdi Pirzadeh, president of Aspen Built Homes, confirmed on Friday that he and another proponent, Terry Claassen of TCC Properties, have been working with town officials to hammer out some of the pre-application details for the project, which is proposed for construction on property in Carbondale owned by the Nieslanik family.

TCC properties, based in California, has been involved in developing other projects in Colorado, including senior living centers in Montrose, Golden and Glenwood Springs, according to information about the firm available on the Internet.

Most recently, according to Claassen, the company was engaged in the initial development-approval process for a project along the Roaring Fork River in Glenwood Springs.

That project, Claassen told The Sopris Sun in July of last year, has been sold to a development partnership in Wisconsin, and was due to break ground soon.

According to information presented to the Carbondale Board of Trustees in late July, the Sopris Lodge project at that time was envisioned as a 70-unit complex on land just north of the Rio Grand Trail and east of Fourth Street.

Claassen, who was the spokesman for the project at a meeting on July 29, 2015, said the access to the proposed senior complex originally was proposed as a driveway alongside the Rio Grand Trail to Fourth Street.

But negotiations with the owners of the land in question were not interested, and the focus shifted to a plan to redesign North 2nd Street and its crossing of the Rio Grand Trail, and then create a street leading to the senior project.

Planning & Zoning Commission sends UDC to trustees A new zoning code

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer Carbondale’s citizen planners, after more than two years of work on rewriting the town’s development review regulations, this week took their final action on a streamlined, updated and in some cases groundbreaking set of regulations for reviewing development proposals.

On Thursday, the volunteer members of the Planning & Zoning Commission unanimously recommended approval of the proposed Unified Development Code.

The night before, on Wednesday, the P&Z met in joint session with the Carbondale Board of Trustees to go over the document one last time before presenting it to the public in a public hearing Feb. 18. (Editor’s note: The trustees’ meetings are now on Wednesday nights, after The Sopris Sun has gone to press.)

The draft version of the UDC, as it is known, now will go before the trustees on March 9 for yet another public hearing in preparation for final adoption.

Work began on the UDC in 2013, after town officials concluded that the old code, dating back to 1993, was too cumbersome and, in places, too contradictory to be of much practical use to developers or to the town itself as it reviewed development proposals for everything from commercial businesses to residential homes and complexes.

The UDC is 358 pages of text, diagrams and illustrations, comprising eight chapters, that can be viewed on a special website (www.carbondaleudc.com), which features a considerable amount of information about the process undergone by the Planning & Zoning Commission and the town’s consultant on the project, Clarion Associates of Denver.

Planning Director Janet Buck told The Sopris Sun on Friday that the meeting between the P&Z and the trustees went smoothly.

“No major issues came up on Wednesday night,” Buck said, noting that the trustees did make some suggestions for last-minute changes.

“Basically, it is some clean-up of the lighting section, putting agricultural lands in sensitive areas, consider food processing in all commercial zone districts and allow community gardens in all zone districts,” she said of the trustees’ proposed modifications.

She noted that, in more than two years spent on the UDC, “There had already been numerous meetings (read many, many, many) working through the UDC, as well as four public meetings in addition to the public hearing (Thursday) night.”

The trustees’ regular meetings typically start at 6 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at Town Hall (511 Colorado Ave.), with work sessions usually the first and third Wednesday. The public is encouraged to attend the meetings.

In what’s believed to be the first time in the Valley Visual Art Show’s 36 years, a high school student won the People’s Choice award. Roaring Fork High School junior Katelyn Krehbiel took first place for her watercolor/acrylic/colored pencil and resin portrait titled “What Are You Thinking?” (above). Working with layered steel mesh and paint, Janet Nelson was runner up for her “Red Dress” (right). Krehbiel was awarded $100 and two tickets to CCAH’s Green is the New Black fashion show; Nelson received $50 and one ticket to the show.

The show, one of the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities longest running events, attracted a record 67 entries in numerous mediums. Other artists receiving People’s Choice votes were Kip Hubbard (“Time”), Judy Fox-Perry (“Lucky Cricket”), Heather Craven (“Dilla”), Launa Eddy (“An Open Mind”) and Kirk Robinson (“James: As the Frontiersman”). Town moves ahead on 133 slow down Sopris Sun Staff Report The Town of Carbondale is working with officials with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) to expand a 25-miles-per-hour speed limit stretch of Highway 133 to include the entrance of the new Ross Montessori School, according to the Feb. 19 weekly memo from Town Manager Jay Harrington to the town’s trustees and other recipients.

In response to questions from The Sopris Sun, Harrington confirmed that Town Hall first broached the subject of expanding the school zone last spring, and that the town had reminded CDOT in November that the school would be opening in January (which it did).

He said he was unsure how far the zone might be expanded, if CDOT goes along with the request, or when that might occur.

In the memo, Harrington noted that there is a meeting scheduled for March 11 on the subject.

In other remarks, Harrington wrote that the streets crew has made headway with snow and ice removal, and that the town’s street sweeper has been brought into service thanks to the recent warm and relatively dry weather.

In particular, Harrington noted, the parks and recreation department has been working on ice dams along trails, where drainage has been blocked. Harrington wrote that these problem areas are being monitored for possible installation of drywalls to aid in preventing future drainage issues.

Harrington also reported that the ice rinks at the Gus Darien Riding Arena and the Fourth Street Plaza both are closed for the season due to the extended warming period experienced in the valley. He added that the town had “almost eight weeks of good skating this season.”

Town officials took part in a meeting last week, hosted by the Roaring Fork Food Policy Council, where participants discussed

ways to improve the Carbondale Farmer’s Market, which is held on Wednesdays in the summer and fall. Ideas under consideration, Harrington wrote, include expanding the market’s hours of operation into the evening; hosting a second weekend market; accommodating more local area farmers at the market; providing additional financial assistance from taxpayer funds; raising vendor fees; and the need to find a replacement for the current market manager, whom Harrington indicated would be unable to run the market operations this summer.

At the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center (CRCC), the winter/spring catalogue for programs is now available, either in printed form or online at www.carbondalerec.com.

The Youth Basketball League practices take place from 4 to 7 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays; games continue to be held each week against teams from Aspen, Basalt and Glenwood Springs, Harrington wrote. There are 10 teams competing in the league.

Other continuing programs offered at the CRCC include youth dodgeball every Friday; youth climbing classes as well as Spider Monkey classes for climbers aged 4-6 years; adult volleyball league games every Monday night and Pickleball pick-up games on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays (1:30 and 3:30 p.m.).

In addition, Harrington wrote, the “Be My Workout Buddy” program is continuing through the end of the month, with participants competing to win prizes while working their way though 29 different fitness challenges. Harrington reported that the utilities department measured “a blip in the turbidity at Nettle Creek,” the town’s chief source of potable water, and predicted that turbidity values will rise as the spring snowmelt season gets going.

SATURDAY, Feb. 13: At 5:32 p.m. police officers responded to a verbal altercation between a visiting parent and coach of a visiting team playing Roaring Fork High School in basketball. The case is under investigation.

SATURDAY, Feb. 13: At 9 p.m. officers responded to a fight involving an intoxicated male. He was arrested for disorderly conduct and taken to Garfield County Jail.

SUNDAY, Feb. 14: At 12:50 a.m. police stopped a vehicle for weaving and an improper turn on Highway 133. The driver was arrested for DUI. TUESDAY, Feb. 16: At 7:37 p.m. officers responded to a report of a disturbance at the RFTA park-and-ride lot on Highway 133. Officers arrested a 46year-old male for disorderly conduct and trespassing, and took him to Garfield County Jail.

THURSDAY, Feb. 18: At 2:14 a.m. officers stopped a vehicle on suspicion of utilizing a false car tag. Upon contact, police found that the plates were indeed false and the driver had a suspended license. The driver was arrested for DUI and driving with a suspended license.

Representatives from the town’s Technical and Financial Advisory Committee, Holy Cross, SourceGas, and Xcel Energy have been invited to participate in this panel-setting Q&A, which will be facilitated by Michael Kinsley of the Rocky Mountain Institute.

Panelists’ Q&A will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. From 7 to 7:30 p.m., individuals will have the opportunity to ask questions to the panelists. Hoops At last Sunday’s seventh and eighth grade round-robin basketball tournament at Roaring Fork High School, the seventh grade All Stars fell to Montrose 51-30, but Edin Tena scored 12 points and Graham Pietsch had seven. In their next game, DeBeque racked up 51 points to Carbondale’s

34, with Pietsch scoring 12, and Finn Leahy and Manny Santana putting in six each.

For the eighth grade All Stars, Carbondale nipped Montrose 32-29, with Nate Carricarte scoring 10 and AJ Adams six. The All Stars then got a win over Glenwood Springs 38-19, with Jonathan Woodrow dropping nine points and Lucas Schramer six. On Feb. 28 at RFHS, the seventh graders face Craig at 1 p.m. and Riverside at 3 p.m.; the eighth graders take on Olathe at noon and Vail at 3 p.m.

Breakfast is served

Most of the calves on this page — including a few young, galloping gourmets — didn’t seem to mind being photographed during breakfast, but some moms did and shamelessly stuck their tongues out at this photographer who didn’t take it personally.

It was breakfast time last week when we caught up with Ted and Paul Nieslaniks’ herd of more than 300 cattle near the Waldorf School east of Carbondale.

The number of cattle increases daily during this time of year as calving season is in full swing for these ranchers who work or are on call 24 hours a day to make sure that all is well with moms and newborns.

Between feeding, ear tagging, giving shots, helping first-time moms during labor, moving the cattle around, checking calves and moms to see if they need medical attention and if so administering to minor medical needs, it seems as if a cowboy’s work is never done.

Basalt Chamber slates candidate forum March 2 Submit your questions now

“The next few years will be among the most important in Basalt’s modern-day history,” said Robin Waters, chamber president. “Basalt leaders will need to work together to unite the community, craft a collective vision and strategize effective, fiscally-responsible ways to move forward. This is an opportunity for policy-makers and residents alike to focus on collaborative problem solving.”

Eight candidates will be on stage for two hours answering a series of eight to 15 questions each. To bring more depth to candidates’ positions and to provide ongoing accessibility for the public, the Basalt chamber has also arranged for each candidate to be filmed after the forum to elaborate on questions drawn from the live forum and others received from the public.

Andrew Spickert and Emmy award winning filmmaker Barry Stevenson, along with long-time resident Haley Thompson, are part of a new professional video team working to capture significant moments around the Basalt community. Videos will be posted online and on social media by the chamber for public viewing.

Questions may be submitted for consideration to BoardChair@BasaltChamber.com or on the election thread on the Basalt community page on Facebook. Questions chosen will best reflect the key issues of the day and elicit substantive candidate comment.

The election will be held on April 5. Ballots will be mailed March 14 to 21 to registered voters. March 14 is the last day to establish residency in the town of Basalt ! in order to vote in April. The new mayor and city council are scheduled to be sworn in on April 19.

Sopris Sun Staff Report The Basalt Area Chamber of Commerce holds an election issues/town council forum at Grace Church of the Roaring Fork Valley (1776 Emma Rd.) from 6 to 8 p.m. on March 2, according to a press release.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the program will begin promptly at 6 p.m. The forum is open to the public and will provide voters with an opportunity to meet and hear the positions of the candidates prior to the April 5 Basalt mayor and town council elections.

Candidates for mayor are incumbent Jacque Whitsitt and town councilman Rick Stevens.

Six candidates are vying for three at-large town council seats: challengers Leroy Duroux, Jennifer Riffle, Auden Schendler and Katie Schwoerer, along with incumbents Robert Leavitt and Herschel Ross.

“The Basalt Chamber and volunteers have worked to design a forum and to shape questions that challenge candidates to seek visionary and uniting solutions for Basalt,” said chamber board member Charles Spickert. “We encourage the community to join with us in this effort.”

According to Spickert, questions for the candidates will cover current concerns such as traffic, affordable housing, child care and maintaining a vibrant workforce, as well as general topics about economic vitality and sustainability, regional collaboration and fiscal responsibility. Some ingredients for good health: Letters good food, exercise and more believe that whether we enjoy good health or are stricken by disease is mostly out of our control. We have been indoctrinated with the idea that illness is the result of bad luck, bad bugs or bad genes. However, this view is disempowering and ultimately not scientifically valid. While germs and genetics play a role in our health, rarely do they dictate our health status. True genetic illness makes up a tiny percentage of disease (Hemophilia, for instance, is the result of bad luck, bad genes). Barring such true genetic conditions, how our genes express themselves is due in large part to environmental influences — our lifestyle choices. These choices — how we eat, move and think — promote or hinder our innate capacity for health and vitality.

I teach a paradigm of wellness rather than the conventional paradigm of sickness. The body’s natural state is that of wellness. When we provide ourselves and our children with what we as humans need to be sufficient — nutritionally, emotionally, physically — then good, true health usually follows. It is one thing to help patients in the office but it is quite another to see it play out in the laboratory of my home.

So, darn right I’ll use my family as an example of good health! Not to brag but to inspire. I’m excited to share some of what I’ve learned over the years in future columns.

I hope I can create conversation, ruffle some feathers and shift some paradigms.

Yes on 2A Dear Editor: I am in in firm support of the Climate Action Yes! on 2A proposal to add a fee associated with our personal and commercial energy use. Like many of our community members, I too am aware of the argument that another tax will add to the increasing affordability issues of our town, but I am also aware that every dollar spent in energy efficiency can yield far more in energy savings. If people were to make even simple changes in our energy use, the savings would far outweigh a tax fee.

Start with the things that don’t cost money: turn off the lights when you leave a room; unplug your computers, wireless routers and phone charges when not in use (yes, these gadgets still use energy when plugged into a wall, even if they are “off”).

Amaze yourself with the savings in the first month, then take that money saved and make some small investments in LED light bulbs, garage door strips, window coverings, insulation for your water heater, a programmable LETTERS page 15

By Dr. Scott Tesoro Yesterday a childhood friend took me to task for a Facebook post. The post relayed a conversation between my wife and me and our two kids, ages nine and 11, regarding health and wellness. We were discussing how healthy our kids have been to date, how few medical visits they’ve had (eight total) and how they’ve never needed antibiotics.

I mentioned in the post they have yet to drink soda or see the inside of a McDonald’s. Of course they occasionally get sick, but they recover with minimal intervention. I went on to say that we realize we have been fortunate and that our hands-off strategies don’t guarantee a perfect outcome.

However, we truly believe that when provided with the essential ingredients for health (whole food, exercise, emotional support, etc), good health generally ensues.

My friend’s beef was that I was bragging. “You guys are the best parents ever,” he sarcastically replied. Now, this is the guy with whom I raided the girls bunk in sleep-away camp, and with whom I went away to college. In other words, he is an OLD friend. Old friends are not about to cut you slack or recognize that you’ve come a long way since that bowl of Johnny Walker and cornflakes in high school. The thing about old friends is that their opinions carry a disproportionate amount of weight. Fifty people “liked” the post, but HE didn’t, which caused me to wonder if this was my Facebook equivalent of a “my honor student” bumper sticker?

Now, no one would ever use social media to boast, brag or show his best face. Certainly not moi. But, my buddy’s comment did make me consider the ultimate intention for the post. Was I just bragging?
