Another environmental column I recently studied macro-economics at CMC. I recommend this course for anyone. What you learn immediately is that the practice of economics has one goal: growth. This fits with what is called the DSP, or the “dominant social paradigm”; or you could say the dominant economic paradigm. Every business school, every financial information media outlet, every Chamber of Commerce, every political party platform and every important political speech will tout the need to raise the GDP; the gross domestic product. A decline or even a slowing of the rate of growth of the GDP is cause for a change of government.

The Roaring Fork Valley is fully committed to this concept of growth. We must have a new airport to bring in more guests. We must have new hotels to house these guests. We will add more terrain to the ski areas, with more ski lifts, to serve more skiers. Our towns will build more commercial to increase retail business and raise more tax dollars. We will use those tax dollars to build more lower-cost housing to accommodate the additional working people who are needed to man all these new businesses and customers. Highway improvements and mass transit options must be done.

We call the prevailing consciousness a “paradigm” because it is allencompassing and at the same time unnoticed. A well-travelled story told at a college commencement talks about two young fish that swim by two older fish. One of the older fish asks the younger ones: “How’s the water?” The younger ones just keep going. Then one

asks the other: “What is water?”

There was a legendary professor at CU that did a lecture for years on exponential growth. Dr. Al Bartlett has passed on but the school vows to continue the lecture. Essentially, continuous growth means the end of the “human experiment”.

Continuing to add on to the population, and our effects, has only one possible outcome: think Easter Island. Al said “sustainable growth” was an oxymoron.

That is true.

The great challenge we now face is how to change the DSP. This will not be easy, if it can be done at all.

This is 200 years in the making and we all receive thousands of messages per day in advertising that influence everything we do.

The problem is that all the natural systems on the Earth that have supported humans and the environment in a sort of “Goldilocks-just-right” condition are grossly overwhelmed. If we don’t change this situation we are “toast”.

This means we need a new “economics” and we need it fast. The “Neoliberal economic model“ and the consumer economy have to change. What nobody seems to know is where we go from here.

Don’t eliminate Planning 2.0

Dear Editor: I’m writing to express concern over the recent move to eliminate the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) “Planning 2.0” initiative, which provides a much needed update to how BLM gathers public opinion on proposed projects.

Planning 2.0 strives to streamline and standardize the public input process, and to give state and local governments, individuals, and businesses more input on projects occurring on BLM lands. I’ve spent a lot of time recreating on BLM land, and in the past couple of years I’ve also spent a lot of time working on BLM land in Western Colorado.

We need to balance recreation with industry – both are important uses of our shared resource, and both would benefit from more public involvement in the planning process.

The move to kill Planning 2.0 originated in the U.S. House of Representatives, and will soon get a vote in the U.S. Senate. I urge the reader to contact Colorado’s Senator Cory Gardner (who will have a chance to vote on the measure soon) at (970) 2459553, and Representative Scott Tipton (who co-sponsored the move to roll back Planning 2.0) at (970) 241-2499.

Please tell them that you oppose the effort to eliminate Planning 2.0 and reduce our voice in how our lands are managed.

BLM land is an invaluable asset to hikers, hunters, and campers, and it is used to produce the resources that power our economy – let’s work to stay involved in the way this land is managed in the future.

Dear Editor: We are writing to urge parents to consider enrolling their child/children at Crystal River Elementary School. We are parents of a current 3rd grader and 6th grader (now at Carbondale Middle School) who began at CRES in preschool.

We have nothing but positive things to say about our experiences at CRES. All the teachers and specials teachers our children have received have been nothing but caring and experienced individuals. And, Mr. K, our principal, has been an incredible asset to our school for the last couple of years.

We love that CRES integrates all children in the school but also take special care in giving students extra help in small group settings during parts of the day. When we go into CRES to volunteer, we have seen small groups of students go to PEAK so they can be challenged in math, reading or writing.

Or we have noticed many teachers team up and take 3-4 students to give a group the extra help they may need to comprehend the meaning of a book they are currently reading. We really feel like CRES has created an environment where every child can be successful in learning.

It is truly remarkable that this school has so many special classes during the day. We love that our kids have come home singing Spanish songs that they learned in Spanish class; or how excited they were to go ice skating and cross country skiing with Mr. Madsen the PE teacher; or the excitement about dissecting an owl pellet in ACES; or getting to dress up as a railroad conductor to present information that was discovered

about railroads in Colorado for Project Based Learning (PBL). We could go on and on about the vast activities CRES offers.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our time in the halls of CRES and hope that more and more families join this amazing community of students, parents and teachers.

Immigrants are my friends Dear Editor: I am very concerned by what’s happening to my immigrant friends. Nobody can decide what to call them, i.e., illegal aliens, undocumented workers, unauthorized immigrants. I call them friends and I support the “Day Without Immigrants” walkout last week.

Trump’s trumped-up nightmare of hordes of rapists and murderers streaming across the border just isn’t happening. If you want to see an influx of immigration, wait until Trump starts a trade war with Mexico and ruins their economy. No wall or legions of border guards will keep them out. Canada does not require Mexicans to have visas, so the immigrants could fly there and walk across the unwalled, unguarded border.

Further, Mexico currently welcomes refugees from troubled Central American countries. If Trump continues with his immigration policies, Mexico could just pass them on to El Norte.

Jobs immigrants take are often jobs citizens don’t want. Immigrants aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty and appreciate the intrinsic value of a good day’s work. It must LETTERS page 15

Carbondale businesses take the day off in protest

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer A smattering of Latino and Anglo businesses in Carbondale closed in conjunction with nationwide political “actions” on Feb. 16 and 17.

On Feb. 16, it was a nationwide Day Without Immigrants strike to show how much the U.S. needed its immigrant workforce, and an informal survey of the town showed that at least four businesses closed their doors for the day.

And at least one business, the Back Door Consignment shop, closed on Feb. 17 as an expression of solidarity with that day’s national strike and boycott aimed at protesting the presidency and policies of Donald J. Trump.

Most local businesses in town, however, remained open for both days.

Day Without Immigrants Owners or spokespersons at Garcia’s Cafe, Tortilleria La Roca, Teresa’s Market and Los Cabos (formerly El Horizonte) confirmed that they closed for the Day Without Immigrants, which was aimed at demonstrating the reach and impact of immigrant workers around the U.S. At Garcia’s, at Highway 133 and Cowen Drive, owner Francisco Rivera said that five of his employees expressed a desire to take part in the day of protest, adding, “they were happy that we were supporting it.”

In addition, Rivera said, customers who came in the following day were appreciative of his decision.

“They said, thank you for closing,” Rivera recalled in a telephone interview.

Nationwide, according to news reports, thousands turned out in support of the Day Without Immigrants, though some were fired by their employers for skipping work to take part in the day’s events.

Stacey Baldock, owner of two restaurants in Carbondale (The Goat, at the north end of town near Cowen Drive, and The Pig, 1054 Highway 133 next to Sopris Wine & Spirits), told The Sopris Sun that all of her employees are Hispanic and that she supported them and their interest in taking

“I’m gay, they’re Latino, and I support them one hundred percent,” Baldock said, noting that as a lesbian she feels that “my people are next in line” for prejudicial treatment at the hands of President Donald J. Trump and the Republican Party.

At the family-owned Tortilleria La Roca, in the Red Rock Plaza on Highway 133, owner Cesar Ruiz said, “It was a decision that we made as a family … it was something, you know, that we all need to stand together.”

He conceded that he had lost a good bit of income, but added, “We’ll make it back today, we’ve been very busy.”

One local Mexican restaurant, El Pollo Rico in the Sopris Shopping Center, chose to stay open on Feb. 16 because a spokesman felt the protest was not organized well.

“I didn’t agree with the way that they did it,” said the spokesman, asking that his name not be used out of concern that he might alienate some of his customers.

He said that the Day Without Immigrants seemed to be organized primarily using Facebook and social media, adding, “I look at Facebook, but not very often.” He maintained that it struck him as ineffective and insupportable.

He felt that a previous day of demonstrations about U.S. immigration policy, “about seven years ago,” was much better organized and effective, and said that he took part in that protest.

“The Anglo community has been very good to the Latino people,” he said of Carbondale’s attitude about immigration, immigrants and the mix of cultures. “We really appreciate that. I believe that we got a really nice community here.”

He said none of his customers that day said anything about the protest event, or about his decision to stay open.

School absences surge In addition to business closures, as indicated by data from the Roaring Fork School District, daily absentee rates in Car-

bondale schools at least tripled and, in the case of Crystal River Elementary School, more than quintupled on Feb. 16, compared to attendance numbers three days earlier on Feb. 13, a normal school day without a national protest.

According to numbers provided by Kelsy Been, the district’s public information officer, on Feb. 13 the schools in Carbondale recorded 17 absenses at CRES, 18 absenses at Carbondale Middle School, 24 at Roaring Fork High School and seven at Bridges High School.

On Feb. 16, Been’s numbers showed, CRES reported 93 absences (more than five times the Feb. 13 number), CMS had 68 students absent (nearly four times as many as on Feb. 13), RFHS reported 73 students out and Bridges had 24.

Been said the district has no alternative explanation for the absentee surge, other than the Day Without Immigrants action.

Nationwide boycott?

The owner of the Back Door Consignment shop, at 50 N. 4th St. in Carbondale, readily conceded that his was likely to be the only local business that closed for the Feb. 17 boycott/protest against President Donald Trump’s positions and policies.

“It’s costing us a day’s worth of business, but what the heck, you do what you can do,” said Monk Burkmier in advance of the protest.

He said on Feb. 20 that he got no feedback from customers about being closed, but steadfastly held that it was the moral thing to do and that he was glad he did it.

“I don’t think anybody (in town, besides himself) knew about it, which was too bad,” he noted.

No other local businesses could be found that took part in the Feb. 17 boycott and protest.

Nationally, building on the success of the Feb. 16 events, pro-immigrant protests continued throughout the weekend, including large rallies in Los Angeles, Ca., and Dallas, Tx., according to a report by NBC News.

Valley Settlement Project stands on its own as nonprofit

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer The Valley Settlement Project, a Carbondale-based project that aims at improving the lives and educational opportunities of immigrants (primarily Hispanic) in the Roaring Fork Valley region, is confident it will continue to provide services and support for numerous clients of all ages following its recent “launch as a stand-alone nonprofit,” according to executive director Jon Fox-Rubin.

Town Briefs Pickleball, 1st Bank project top this week’s issues A question that may or may not be reverberating around Carbondale these days is: Is it Pickleball time yet?

The answer, according to a Feb. 17 memo from Carbondale’s Town Manager Jay Harrington, might sound something like this: “Well, maybe, if the snow and the rain hold off for a while.”

The statement from Harrington is reflected in his memo’s report from the Parks Department to the effect that “the Darien tennis and pickleball courts are free and clear of ice and snow, and the tennis nets were installed on Friday to have them available for the holiday (Presidents Day) weekend. We will lock the gates if snow and ice return.”

Pickleball, of course, currently is considered the fastest growing sport in the U.S., as aging Baby Boomers put down their tennis racquets and opt for the somewhat less strenuous but reportedly equally fun sport of Pickleball.

The sport involves a solid wooden paddle, a tennis court with modified lines, a ball similar to a Wiffle ball, and a net, with similar dimensions and rules of both badminton and tennis.

According to the Wikipedia online information source, the sport was first played in Bainbridge Island, Washington in 1965, was invented primarily as a children’s game, and has since exploded in popularity among adults.

In Carbondale, the sport’s popularity has resulted in negotiations between recreation officials, tennis players and the area’s Pickleball League over use of existing but repurposed tennis courts.

The town’s planning and zoning meeting tonight (Feb. 23) starts at 6 p.m. in Town Hall, and the primary item on the agenda is a public hearing for a preliminary/final subdivision plat, site plan review and special use application for a bank at the Carbondale Marketplace project (site of a planned new City Market.)

In other parks department news, a crew has placed five truckloads of mulched Christmas trees on “one of the low-

lying, non-rideable surfaces at the North Face Bike park,” Harrington wrote.

“This is an experiment to try and use a natural way to suppress the abundance of weeds in this area … with a material source that will be readily available” every year.

Parks crew member also have begun aerating, seeding and fertilizing the town’s turf fields, all of which currently are closed to organized use as “the soil is saturated and damage to the existing grasses could occur,” Harrington concluded.

In other town news, the streets crew has continued taking advantage of unseasonably warm weather by sweeping the streets, patching potholes, grading gravel roadways and alleys and working on several routine maintenance chores, rather than the usual wintertime tasks of clearing snow from streets, trails and sidewalks.

In addition, Harrington reported, the Public Works department has sent out crews to cut back and/or trim perennial flowers and grasses along Main Street.

The Public Works staff also has met with officials from the Xcel Energy power company, to arrange power for lights and an irrigation pump to be used on the 3rd Street upgrading project.

An RFP (request for proposals) went out last week for port-apotties for the town's parks, with a deadline for submitted proposals on Feb. 24.

At the Recreation Department, programming for the current period (January through May), can be found in the winter/spring brochure, which is partially translated into Spanish.

It is available in printed form and is posted on the website, www.carbondalerec.com.

The current list of programs includes classes for all ages, from pre-school to adult, ranging from exercise programs to winter volleyball to Tae Kwon Do classes (including free community selfdefense seminars Feb. 25, from 1-4 p.m.) and much more.

During that period, officers investigated the following cases of note: FRIDay, Feb. 10: at 4:02 p.m. police responded to a location on Garfield Avenue and arrested two men, aged 24 and 39, on charges of disorderly conduct and drunk driving, respectively.

SaTURDay, Feb. 11: at 3:19 p.m. police took a report of a bicycle being stolen from the Carbondale Branch Library.

SaTURDay, Feb. 11: at 8:12 p.m. police were informed of a criminal mischief case at Sopris Park, in which a juvenile was reported to have tipped over a porta-potty.

The juvenile was apprehended and summoned into court.

SUNDay, Feb. 12: at 12:51 a.m. police were called by a man who said his underage son had not returned home from a high school dance, and that the family was worried the boy might be out drinking. The boy was entered into the juvenile runaway databanks, and was returned home safely the next morning, according to police.

MONDay, Feb. 13: at 11:05 a.m. police received a report about the theft of a disableddriver parking permit from a vehicle at the Crystal Village Market (City Market lot).

MONDay, Feb. 13: A local man called police to inform them that his identity had been stolen, which he discovered when he tried to file his taxes and was informed by the Internal Revenue Service that his social security number had been used to file for his taxes already.

Welcoming Winston home with ‘e Tempest’ at under River eatre

By Will Grandbois Sopris Sun Staff Writer For years, Lon Winston’s name has been practically synonymous with the Thunder River Theatre Company. This week, it’s official.

After the opening performance of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” on Feb. 24, the black box performance space at the heart of the building will be dedicated “The Lon Winston Theatre.”

“I’m proud, of course,” Winston acknowledged. “It just says something so deep in my heart about giving to the community and all the people who were involved. If we don’t maintain the legacy and love of theatre, we’re going to lose something so important as a civilization.”

Winston founded Thunder River in 1995 and oversaw the construction of the company’s home at 67 Promenade during more than 20 years as the executive director.

“We played everywhere, but in the back of my head, this theatre was sitting in Carbondale – it was just a matter of when and how,” he said.

“The Tempest” represents Winston’s return to directing after handing over the organization’s reins last summer.

“People in theatre don’t ever retire,” he noted. “But this is the first show in 20 years that I get to get into the script without worrying about all the other stuff.”

It’s Winston’s third time taking on The Bard. He did “Macbeth” early on as a partnership with CMC, and more recently directed “Hamlet” to local acclaim.

While he finds simply changing the setting

of the plays gimmicky, he’s far from a purist.

“I think today the movers and shakers are doing with Shakespeare rather than just doing Shakespeare,” Winston observed. “I like making it palatable for a contemporary audience. The stories are universal and they dive into the human condition like no other.”

Savvy audience members might notice some gender bending in addition to an array of anachronisms, but the core arc and style remains intact. After more than a decade on a remote island, the sorcerer Prospero plots an escape for his daughter by conjuring a storm to bring those who have wronged them to his shores. In the process, he wrestles with his own angels and demons in the form of the supernatural denizens of his abode.

“It’s about reconciliation – though Prospero wants people to pay before he forgives,” Winston observed.

It’s also about relationships, as Jeff Carlson, who plays Prospero, explained.

“The people around him shape who he is and how he uses his power,” he said.

Chief among them is his daughter, Miranda, played by TRTC newcomer Gabrielle Bailes. But his own influence is strong in her, with few others to shape her.

“She was removed from society, and she wasn’t educated to be a woman,” Bailes explained.

If this is ringing bells from a high school English class, keep in mind it’s a different experience on stage.

“There isn’t anything we do that isn’t rooted in the text, but plays aren’t meant to be read – they’re meant to be performed. It’s

It’s delving into what they really mean,” Winston said. “The language is a barrier for many people, and you’ve got to really tell the story for the audience to understand it.”

High school musical Students at Basalt High School have been hard at work for the past few months rehearsing for “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,� which shows Feb. 23 – 25 at 7 p.m. with a matinee at 2 p.m. Feb. 25. After serving as interim director for more than a year, Angela Bruno accepted a permanent post at the Carbondale Clay Center last week. An active member of the Clay Center since 2013, Bruno served as an executive board member and chair of the special events committee before stepping in as the interim director in 2015.

Speaking about the organization, its client base and its goals, Fox-Rubin told The Sopris Sun that Valley Settlement is not specifically working to assuage concerns among local Latinos about the attitudes and policies of President Donald Trump.

Trump and others have openly derided illegal Hispanic immigrants and called for deportation at an as-yet uncertain rate.

On Feb. 21, Trump issued directives to various federal agencies to step up enforcement of the nation’s immigration laws, calling for significant increases in deportations regardless of whether the immigrants in question had committed serious crimes.

tions; enlist local police officers as enforcers; erect new detention facilities; discourage asylum seekers; and, ultimately, speed up deportations.”

Fox-Rubin acknowledged that there sometimes is a barely submerged sense of panic among the area’s Hispanic residents, and said he believes the Valley Settlement programs help to mitigate against the nervousness felt by parents and children regardless of their immigration status.

With 35 paid staffers working in the field on a daily basis, he said, Valley Settlement’s programs help families gain confidence in their abilities to learn English and other material, adapt to U.S. laws and customs and meld into society.

“We’re a virtual community center for education,” Fox-Rubin said, adding, “We just want to focus on the families, listen to their needs” and help meet those needs.

Referring to the legal issues, Fox-Rubin said, “We don’t care. We’re just asking moms to volunteer in the schools,” as a way to both improve the mom’s education and deepen the connection between her, her children, and the educational process.

While the Valley Settlement Project is in good shape to continue its mission, FoxRubin noted, “We always need financial support” to maintain what he termed “a very intensive program.”

And, he continued, Valley Settlement’s work is showing significant, positive results.

“The data’s starting to show the kids (who go through the Busesito programming) are doing pretty darned good in kindergarten,” he commented, which speaks to a core value of the organization — the vital need to get pre-school kids, and their parents, as comfortable as possible with the idea of going to school and working together at home to raise the level of education for the entire family.

Armed robbery leads to manhunt; suspects still at large

Steindler said at 11 a.m. the next day that the search effort had been suspended because “at this time, there’s no indication that they’re still in Pitkin County.”

Authorities on Feb. 22 were still looking for two suspects in a Feb. 16 armed robbery in Carbondale, after two men thought to be the robbers eluded police on the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 21, by jumping out of an emergency window on a Roaring Fork Transportation Authority bus stopped at the Holland Hills area on Highway 82 near Basalt.

An all-day pursuit of the two suspects ensued in the mountainous terrain south and east of Basalt along the Arbaney-Kittle Trail. That manhunt yielded no results, despite use of K-9 police dogs, two drones equipped with cameras and an airplane borrowed from the Colorado Division of Fire Protection and Control in Denver. The search was halted at about 6 p.m.

All told, according to Pitkin County Sheriff’s Deputy Jesse Steindler, approximately 25 officers from “every law enforcement agency within a 50-mile radius” responded to a call for assistance to find the two men.

The men were identified as Nicholas Ameral and Benjamin Weeks, both 19. Both were described by clerks at the Valero Cowen Convenience Store as black males wearing mostly black clothing, speaking English in “an urban inner city dialect” and carrying at least one handgun between them.

Ameral was described as being about five feet, eleven inches tall with brown eyes and black hair, weighing perhaps 140 pounds.

The gun-wielding suspect, after escorting the clerks to the area near the register and telling them to lie down on the floor, also began pulling cash from the drawer.

The two men stuffed the cash into jacket pockets and left the store, and were last seen heading toward Highway 133 where it passes the convenience store.

A Carbondale officer, after the department issued a “beon-the-lookout” or BOLO alert to area jurisdictions, got a call from a Basalt police officer who said he knew the pair and “who used to live in Basalt and now lived in Carbondale,” according to officer Rodgers’ affidavit.

The Basalt officer gave the name of Ameral’s 24-yearold brother, but police later concluded that he was not involved. A search of the home of their mother’s home, according to Carbondale police, turned up a Glock 9 mm pistol magazine, loaded with bullets, next to a spot where the mother told police that Nicholas and his cousin, Benjamin Weeks, had slept on the night following the robbery.

The two robbery suspects were not regular occupants of the house owned by Nicholas’ mom, Carbondale police were told.

Meanwhile, Blackmer said, the two suspects apparently “realized something was up” and kicked out an emergency window at the back of the bus and jumped out, running away before police could capture them.

They then ran up an embankment, across a portion of the Roaring Fork Club’s golf course and into the area between the Arbaney-Kittle Trail trailhead and the Basalt cemetery, pursued by police officers.

At that point the suspects disappeared, leaving police to mount an unsuccessful search of the area that was to last all day.

According to Deputy Steindler, who was the Incident Commander for the search at one point and later was named Public Information Officer, there were at least 25 officers from numerous jurisdictions involved in the search.

But by about 6 p.m., as night fell and there was no sign of the suspects, the search was called off, Steindler said.

Area residents were cautioned to lock their homes and vehicles and take preBenjamin Weeks cautions when heading outside.

By Wednesday morning, Steindler said, area law enforcement had concluded the two had somehow escaped from the Basalt area. As of 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, deadline for the Sopris Sun, the pair remained at large and were still considered armed and dangerous.

Criminal history A check with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation indicated that only one of the suspects, Nicholas Ameral, has a criminal record under the name identified by police.

According to the CBI, Ameral was arrested by the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office on March 11, 2013, when he was 15, and charged with possession of marijuana. That charge was dismissed by the district attorney.

The CBI records show that he was arrested again in April, 2016, by the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office on a warrant out of Pitkin County, on charges of menacing and contributing to the delinquency of a minor involving alcohol, both felonies. He also was charged with possession of marijuana, a petty offense, according to the records.

That arrest resulted in a conviction, for which he was sentenced to six months’ probation and 24 hours of community service.

His latest arrest came on May 3, 2016, for failing to comply with court orders from the previous conviction, also a felony.

No further information was available from the CBI concerning Ameral, and the state had no records of criminal activity under the name of Benjamin Weeks.

It was not until Feb. 21 that police got a break in the case, after an alert RFTA bus driver on the Snowmass Village – Highway 82 Intercept lot thought he recognized the suspects and called for the police.

The two had bought tickets to Glenwood Springs, according to RFTA official Kent Blackmer, and the bus got to the lot before the police could get there so the two got on a downvalley bus.

Police and the downvalley bus driver kept in contact, and at one point the driver was instructed to not stop unless police directed him to do so, Blackmer continued.

But as the bus passed the Holland Hills area a passenger called for it to pull over at the next stop.

Sutey swap stayed by federal judges

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer The Sutey-Two Shoes land swap, involving a total of roughly 1,200 acres of publiclyowned property at the base of Mount Sopris near Carbondale and other public lands in western Colorado, remains in a state of suspended animation.

As the trade now stands – according to officials of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and volunteer members of a group fighting against the swap – a panel of administrative judges in Washington, D.C., is preparing to mull over questions about whether the public is getting fair value for its property in the proposed land trade with Ohio billionaire Leslie Wexner and his wife, Abigail.

The trade, which has been in the works for about eight years, calls for the Wexners to take title to 1,200 acres of BLM land that is sandwiched between approximately 4,000 acres of land already owned by the Wexners at the foot of Mount Sopris, as well as another 200 acres of public property in Eagle County.

In return, the public is to get the 557-acre Sutey Ranch north of Carbondale, adjacent to the Red Hill Special Management Recreation Area, 112 acres known as the Haines parcel along Prince Creek Road south of Carbondale, and more than $1 million in

cash to be used for planning and management of the new public areas.

The swap is being opposed by some, including the Colorado Wild Public Lands (CWPL) nonprofit organization, which has filed an appeal based on its belief that appraisals of the properties, meant to ensure that the deal is equitable, managed to significantly undervalue the public land and should be redone.

While the trade was supposed to be concluded at a signing ceremony earlier this month, it turned out that the administrative judges of the Interior Board of Land Appeals (IBLA) had not issued a ruling on the appeal.

Obituary Kenneth James Holgate 1937-2017

Kenneth James Holgate was born April 14, 1937 at the intersection of Highway 133 & 82 (before there were highways) where the home of the Carbondale midwife once stood. He died February 21, 2017 at his home in Cory, CO. Ken was the son of Robert Benjamin Holgate and Blanche Elaine (Whitbeck) Holgate. His childhood was spent on the family ranch on Missouri Heights where Ken did chores, hunted, ďŹ shed and got into mischief with his brother Claude.

Ken walked to the one room school house a couple of miles from the Holgate ranch, pulling his little sister on a sled in winter. The family moved to Catherine Store in 1947.

After that, he attended Carbondale schools.

Ken graduated from Carbondale Union High School in 1955 where he excelled at football and basketball.

The day after graduation, he started work at the Carbondale lumberyard; beginning a distinguished career in the lumber business.

He managed yards in western Colorado, northern New Mexico and eastern Arizona.

The bulk of his career, he was a manager with AC Houston Lumber in Crested Butte, Gallup, NM and other yards in the southwest. He was an old-fashioned lumber guy who could ďŹ gure the materials for a project in his head better

than a computer. He retired as manager of Red Barn Lumber in Farmington, NM in 1999.

Ken married Rosilee Arbaney in 1958 in Carbondale.

They divorced in 1978, and Ken did not remarry.

Ken was a lifelong outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and ďŹ shing. He was a talented nature photographer, and loved watching sports. His love of the Broncos spanned many years and more highs and lows than a rollercoaster.

Survivors include: Daughters Toni Holgate (Doug Coburn) of Paonia, Ivy Holgate Fife (Darrel) of Montrose; son Ken Holgate (Suzanne) of Delta; grandchildren: Christa Coats (John Paul) of Hotchkiss, Ellie Coonrod (Seth) of Loveland, Cassidy Lord (Mike) of Athens, GA, Zoey Fife of Tucson, AZ, Callie Fife of Montrose, Haydn Egeler (Zach) of Colorado Springs, Raigan Holgate of Grand Junction, John Holgate of Delta, Ryann Fife of Montrose, and Jody Holgate of Delta; ďŹ ve great grandchildren and sisters Nonie Hoffman of Carbondale and Janice Clark of Clifton. Ken was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Claude Holgate.

Cremation has taken place. An informal celebration of his life will be in the spring when the family spreads his ashes at a spot on the Crystal River where he once saw a mountain lion.

The music ranged from acoustic sing alongs to poetry over music, to full on electric man jam. In the end, the group swelled to about 25 from the very young to the wizened in time for the sing along closing.

Pioneer Project, popcorn and Pearlington From the archives of the Roaring Fork Valley Journal Feb. 22, 1977 In articles from the Feb. 22, 1977 issue of the Roaring Fork Valley Journal: • The Carbondale Board of Trustees was preparing to hold their meeting in the “new” town hall building at Second and Garfield. Previous to that, town hall was located on Main Street in one of the bottom spaces in the Dinkel Building.

• In a letter to the editor, the Crystal River Environmental Protection Association announced its first membership drive and also some of its accomplishments, which included “helping to alert” the public about the Marble Ski Area.

• Folks were also preparing for a “major” partial solar eclipse and planned to view it in “the park.” Scientists said approximately 88 percent of the sun would be blotted out. The North American

swath was 150 miles wide and included Oregon, Washington, Idaho, North Dakota and Montana, before moving into Canada. A group calling itself “The Alternative Chamber of Commerce” was organizing a “major gathering” in the park.

The VJ reported that coffee and donuts “may or may not be provided.”

Feb. 26, 1987 The Pioneer Project economic development effort ended its research phase with a meeting that attracted about 50 people. A total of 43 ideas to boost the town’s economy were listed. The top ideas included developing the arts industry as an economic

force, and building a golf course. Other ideas included building a coal-mining museum, and selling locally produced beef and poultry.

The Rocky Mountain Institute provided the tutelage in its first-ever project of this kind.

Feb. 20, 1997 Community-access radio station KDNK was looking for volunteers to help it move from its upstairs quarters in the Dinkel Building to the old town hall/new nonprofit center at Second and Garfield. “Just call up or show up,” said station manager Allen Scott. Also needed: trucks, vans and other vehicles. Most of the work would entail moving records, CDs, furniture, studio

equipment and the satellite dish (located on top of the west end of the Dinkel Building).

Scott told the VJ that KDNK volunteers and staffers will miss “the sweet popping scent of freshly popped corn wafting up from the Crystal Theatre.” The article also pointed out the radio station’s rent was slated to double next year, and increase 4 percent per year for the following five years.

Feb. 22, 2007 Colorado Rocky Mountain School announced it would hold a fundraiser to send 30 students to Pearlington, Mississippi to continue that small town’s rebuilding efforts following Hurricane Katrina a year earlier. The mission to Pearlington was part of the school’s annual March Intersession.
