Has it really been five years since The Sopris Sun first hit the streets? Actually, it’s been five years and two weeks, as we are now roaring into Volume 6. Here are some of the Sun’s 260-plus covers that date back to Feb. 12, 2009. Do a little math and guestimating, and 260-plus issues translates into more than 3,600 pages of news, features, letters to the editor, columns, photos and what some call “the first draft of Carbondale’s history.”

It takes a community On Feb. 12, 2009, The Sopris Sun published its first issue. Trina Ortega was the editor and she wrote the cover story. That story was about Amy Kimberly, Ro Mead, and Leslie and Patrick Johnson traveling to Swaziland to help orphaned boys on arts projects at the Manzini Youth Center. In that issue, we also covered the Overlook Project, the Third Street Center, Delaney dog park, local artists, the Mid-Winter Mountain Fair and Roaring Fork High School. We might as well mention that we also included an insert of The Roaring Fork Rampage high school newspaper.

As Trina stated in the closing words of her first editorial, “All of these issues — and how we respond as individuals — will shape the future of what is still the greatest town in the valley.”

We have a copy of the first issue signed by those who helped launch this community project. It’s important that we recognize their pioneering efforts, so here they are: Barbara New, Russ Criswell, Peggy DeVilbiss, Jody Ensign, Allyn Harvey, Colin Laird, Patty Phelan, Liz Philips and Becky Young. Thank you for your vision and for putting in your time, money and talent to make this happen.

Filling the void Dear Editor: The photo brings back a lot of memories.

It’s of me at my dining room table, typing away on my laptop, with my 10-month-old son, Potter, sitting near me on the table (don’t try this at home, kids). No doubt, I was hacking away at another deadline — working roughly 65 hours per week — during the debut year of The Sopris Sun. The photo appeared in the Los Angeles Times, alongside the story “Fine, They’ll Just Publish the Newspaper Themselves.”

Library RFPs available; deadline March 28 Sopris Sun Staff Report So what’ll it be this time around for the former library building: a performing arts facility, non-proďŹ t outďŹ t, for-proďŹ t business, day-care center, educational facility or numerous other uses with the probable exception of a bilingual Bingo parlor?

Folks have until March 28 to speculate because that’s the deadline for proposals to lease the 3,800-square-foot building from the town. The RFP (request for proposals) is available on-line and at town hall. The ďŹ eld is fairly wide open because the RFP only states that the town is soliciting proposals from “qualiďŹ ed non-proďŹ ts, for-proďŹ t businesses and community groupsâ€? to occupy the former Gordon Cooper Library at 76 S. Fourth St. If you’ll remember, the town went through this last year and eventually awarded the lease to a non-proďŹ t that proposed to double the building’s size and open the James Surls Visual Art Center. A lease was never signed and when Surls pulled out earlier this year it was back to the RFP process.

Most of the provisions and requirements in the new RFP are the same as the old one,

except that adding on signiďŹ cant square footage is “discouragedâ€? and the town would like for the lease to extend less than 10 years.

The RFP says that proposals will be evaluated based on: • The economic beneďŹ t to the town of Carbondale; • The vitality of downtown; • The ability to succeed without additional town support; • The ability to meet the requirements of the RFP. After the applicants have turned in their RFPs, the town trustees will hear proposals during a work session but will not take public input until a regular meeting. Last year, one meeting continued for more than two hours as dozens of people commented on two of the three proposals.

How much will the lucky winner pay in rent? Each applicant makes its own proposal.

It’s the top line on the bid sheet and it’s blank.

On a related note, the town will hold tours of the library for interested parties from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 24-25.

presentation and a presentation by CRMS Finance Director Joe White depicted the current pedestrian and bicycle access through the campus and the school’s proposed alternate route along Dolores Way, and connections with the planned future paved trail along the west side of Highway 133.

All but two of the individuals who spoke in support of CRMS were current or former CRMS board members,

Members of the GarďŹ eld County Planning Commission were up late on Feb. 12, when a public hearing on Colorado Rocky Mountain School’s application for vacation of a county right-of-way through the school’s campus lasted over ďŹ ve hours, wrapping up just past midnight. The room was packed and more than 50 people offered input, split roughly evenly between proponents and opponents of the request.

The eventual “no� vote of 5-2 to recommend denying the “Location and Extent� (L&E) portion of the request and 52 recommending denial of the “Vacation� portion of the request came after a somewhat heated late-night discussion between members of the commission.

One of the two commission members siding with Colorado Rocky Mountain School, Greg McKennis, was adamant that the school is a multi-million dollar business that should be able to control public access to its grounds, while those voting to deny the application argued, among other things, that the school has not offered something of equal value in exchange for the public right-of-way nor made adequate efforts to engage its neighbors in coming up with an acceptable alternative pedestrian/bicycle route.

Concerns about emergency access to the Satank neighborhood north of the private school, and residences and businesses along Dolores Way, were also raised. The referral letter from the town of Carbondale to GarďŹ eld County, which asks for denial of the vacation unless certain conditions are met by the school, was referenced several times during the discussion.

The public hearing opened with a presentation by GarďŹ eld County Senior Planner Glenn Hartmann providing context and background for the school’s request. Central to the planning commission’s consideration was whether the vacation of the right-of-way would conform with the county’s comprehensive plan, as well as the Carbondale comprehensive plan it references. Maps, photos and diagrams from Hartmann’s

current or past parents, or current school employees.

They argued that student recruitment – and by extension its ďŹ nancial health — is jeopardized by the current rightof-way situation because it threatens student safety. However, in testimony supporting the vacation request, the former chair of the CRMS Board of Trustees stated that CR106 VACATION page 8

Bull park faces possible name change Sopris Sun Staff Report The Parks & Recreation Commission recently received a petition regarding a request to rename Bull Pasture Park, according to town manager Jay Harrington’s Feb. 14 weekly report. The proposed name is Nuche Park, which means “The People.” It is meant to honor the Ute Indians who lived along the Crystal River 150 years ago, according to Rita Marsh who submitted the petition. Following a 45-day public comment period the Parks & Recreation Commission will make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees on the new proposed park name.

In other paraphrased highlights from Harrington’s report:

for a design/build contractor to replace the public works building overhang that collapsed two weeks ago.

• Lots of snow and ice resulted in many drainage problems.

“Several of our older drywells had a difficult time absorbing the drainage.” Many areas throughout town had ice buildup in the gutter area that did not allow the runoff to follow its designed path.

There are also many properties in Carbondale at lower elevations than the streets so the town experienced some runoff water flowing onto private property.

“Do not hesitate to call or e-mail Public Works about the location(s) of problem potholes.”

• Tony Coia, the town’s landscape manager/certified arborist/landscape designer, resigned from the town. “Tony has been with the town since September of 2005 and his will be tough shoes to fill,” said the report. “We wish Tony well with his new endeavors. We will be advertising the position with an emphasis on our urban forestry program.”

• Pothole season is upon us. “Do not hesitate to call or e-mail public works about the location(s) of problem potholes. This is a tough season because (of) the ongoing winter storm cleanup. We may bring a couple of temporary employees on and train them to clean, fill and compact cold mix in potholes.”

• The Special Event Task Force met for its third and final time to develop recommendations for Sopris Park and downtown events. The town trustees will consider the recommendations at their meeting on Feb. 25.

• The town will be advertising a request for proposals (RFP)

• The planning commission met on Feb. 13 and made a motion to initiate rezoning the south side of the 100 block of Main Street from Commercial Transitional to Historic Commercial Core. The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the rezoning on March 13 and will make recommendation to the board of trustees. The commission also continued its discussions on the unified development code’s annotated outline and will continue them on Feb. 27.

• The youth basketball league is packing the gym with practices and games from 4 to 7 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays.

Adult leagues continue with volleyball on Monday nights and men’s basketball on Sunday nights.

• The police department recently reported three unlocked car break-ins: one on Cleveland Place and two in the Thompson Corner area. Several items were taken. There are no suspects.

• Town staff and Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers have scheduled a work day for the fisherman’s trail along the Crystal River for May 17. RFOV will present its plans on Feb. 25.

As of press time, there were four candidates running for three seats in the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District board race: incumbents Mark Chain, Mike Kennedy and Gene Schilling, plus challenger Carl Smith. The May 6 election will be a polling place election. Candidates have until Feb. 28 to turn in nomination petitions to run in the election. In related news, the ďŹ re board recently cut its pay from $100 to $75 per meeting and also instructed ďŹ re chief Ron Leach to conduct a salary survey of local districts.

RFHS students mock the law But that’s OK. Four Roaring Fork High School students are on a team competing in the Colorado Bar Association’s High School Mock Trial Program Western Slope regional tournament at the GarďŹ eld County Courthouse on Feb. 2123. The team members are Fiona Laird, Emily Mata, Jimmy Serano and Naomi Pulver. Six teams from four Western Slope schools will argue a civil liability case to determine whether a teenage driver should be liable for injuries to a bicyclist. The driver was allegedly texting while driving just before he ran into the bicyclist. There are also three Colorado Rocky Mountain School students on the RFHS team: George Bernard, Caleb Wexler and Ana Lizarraga.

Murphy won’t toss hat In an e-mail to The Sopris Sun, Carbondale Board of Trustees member Elizabeth Murphy said she has decided not to seek another four-year term in the April 1 election. “(It’s) not an easy decision ‌ as I have really enjoyed these last four years (highs & lows) ‌ . There are many wonderful Carbondale residents that will step in and do a wonderful job ‌ . Additionally, I am thrilled that we have such a capable town staff in place moving forward.â€? As for candidates in the three-seat trustees race, challengers Wayne Horak and Katrina Byars have returned nomination petitions they took out earlier in the month, while incumbent Frosty Merriott, and challengers Zander Hobbs and Doc Philip had not as of press time. It looks like incumbent mayor Stacey Bernot will be running unopposed. The deadline to return petitions is Feb. 20 at 5 p.m. For an update, please visit The Sopris Sun website at soprissun.com.

Spring Valleyer takes on Jankovsky Spring Valley resident Michael J. Sullivan announced on Monday he is running against Tom Jankovsky in November’s GarďŹ eld County commissioner race. “Most of the guys here have started from ground zero and we train them. We have a tight crew, and I’m proud to say that there’s very little turnover in the slab shop.”

Mill 98 Near Mill 98, a large bridge saw prepares slabs for the Aspen staircase while the CNC saw and a five-access saw churn away, cutting granite counters for some of Aspen’s Burlingame affordable housing units.

Around the shop’s walls lean slabs of stone: granite, limestone, slate, sandstone, marble and occasionally, even semiprecious stones such onyx and tiger’s eye. More five-by-10-foot stone slabs are stored in the adjacent yard. Shipped from places as distant as China and Italy, most of the stone has

been ordered for specific customers, but Balentine also sells remnants at marked-down prices.

“These new, computerized machines are fast and allow the shop to be very competitive. We are turning out lots of work for mid-valley and lower-valley clients,” says Linman.

“We do a lot of Aspen stuff, but that doesn’t mean that our prices are high end.”

Opening a plastic, dust-proof doorway, he leads the way into a separate handwork room. Here, craftsman are assembling and finishing a custom farmhouse-style sink. A hole has been cut to fit the chosen drain; it’s routed so that the drain’s ring will lie flush to the surface. Linman runs his hand over the bottom of the sink. “This has been sloped on all sides so that the sink will drain.”

“This limestone will have what we call a ‘leathered’ finish. That comes from sanding it using diamond-tipped brushes with increasingly fine grit.” Linman displays a collection of foot-wide, circular steel brushes. “When it’s done, the sink will look like this.” The finished sample of Belgian limestone he hands me is buttery to the touch. Its deep blueblack color, slightly wavy surface and satiny sheen contrast markedly with the in-progress sink, its stone now the color of concrete and as dull as a cardboard box.

The slab shop is busy. It runs eight to 10 hours a day, five or six days a week. A couple of years ago, Linman saw fabrication firms coming up from Denver, looking for work in the Roaring Fork Valley. “No more,” he says. “They are too busy in Denver.”

“I see an uptick in the valley’s business,” Linman continues. “That’s exciting.”

In addition to recently celebrating the remodeling of its Aspen showroom, the Balentine Collection has reopened its showroom here in Carbondale.

“We are fabricating and installing work in Glenwood Springs, Silt, Rifle and in Carbondale,” say Linman.“With the showroom open, we can service downvalley clients much better.”

By Nicolette Toussaint Sopris Sun Correspondent Driving by, few would guess that the boxy-looking building at 398 Merrill Ave. houses what may be the most technologically advanced manufacturing facility in Carbondale.

During a recent tour, Balentine Collection International Operations Manager Whitney Linman opens the door to a vast room. “We fabricate and finish stone here to make kitchen counters, vanities, fireplace surrounds, table tops and benches. We have even made a few memorial headstones; the shop can do some engraving. … Watch your step. There’s water on the floor.”

As the shop’s five huge machines carve, cut and polish, they spew out finely powdered stone. To settle the dust and cool the cutting blades, water constantly sluices across the machines’ work beds and runs onto the floor. Both the water and the dust are recycled.

On this day, most of shop’s 12 employees are carving a massive, curved staircase out of native Colorado sandstone.

The finished staircase, bound for Aspen, will have five radially-curved steps. Each will be about 50 feet long and made up of multiple, pie-shaped pieces that must be cut with precisely angled joints.

Antonio Abarca runs the newest addition to the slab shop: a van-sized Omag Mill 98 machine. Abarca programs the Italian-made CNC (computer numerical control) machine to translate three-dimensional information into machine tool patterns. A computer guides the Omag’s steel blades, angling them to spin on five different axes. The machine can create extremely complex patterns; recently it was programmed to create a lion’s head statue that is on display at the Balentine Collection’s Aspen showroom.

“It takes a long time to learn to run the CNC machines,” Linman says. “Antonio has been doing this for five years, and I’m told that he’s one of the better CNC operators in Colorado. He’s been in the stone business so long! Now he

the school’s financial health has never been stronger. This caused commission member Greg Shaner to question how those two arguments line up. He was joined in his “no” vote by Stephen Damm, Sean Martin, Bob Fullerton and Eric Rudd. Joining McKennis in voting “yes” was Keith Lammey.

Most of the input advocating for denial of the application came from the school’s neighbors in Satank and on Dolores Way, with at least one former CRMS parent questioning the school’s safety argument.

Residents of River Valley Ranch added their voices in opposition, arguing that all the Carbondale neighborhoods west of Highway 133 could be affected if this right-of-way is vacated, because it provides the safest non-motorized route for adults and children from those areas to the Carbondale Community School and the Rio Grande Trail heading toward Glenwood Springs. The commissioners also received numerous letters in advance of the meeting. These are part of the public record and are available online at www.garfield-county.com.

You may have noticed that Carbondale has recently found its way into the national media. Outside magazine named Carbondale as one of the “17 towns that redefine living well,” extolling its myriad of outdoor sports and its “big city cuisine.” Last December, New York magazine featured Carbondale in a weekend travel article, citing its “award-winning public art programs, inventive local cuisine and a burgeoning sustainable art scene … .” Most recently, Sunset magazine declared Carbondale one of the “24 Best Places to Live and Work in 2014,” calling it “Aspen for the rest of us.”

All of the articles mention Carbondale’s proximity to Aspen, so apparently the town is not quite ready to stand on its own without reference to its more famous upvalley neighbor. Still, the word is out: Carbondale is a great place to live, work and play in the mountains, and the way this secret came out is no secret. It is the result of a carefully planned outreach and marketing effort by the Tourism Council of Carbondale (TCC).

The TCC budget is funded by a 2 percent lodging tax that voters approved in 2003. As explained on the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce’s website, the purpose of the lodging tax is “to develop, oversee and implement a strategy and marketing plan to promote tourism in Carbondale.”

Because the tax can only be levied on lodging within the town limits, other nearby lodges have been invited to participate by becoming “lodging partners.” Avalanche Ranch, the Hotel Colorado and the Redstone Inn are three such partners. In exchange for an annual fee, they receive the same benefits as the businesses that pay the lodging tax.

“We give them space on our lodging [website] page and add links to their own websites,” said Carbondale Chamber of Commerce Director Andrea Stewart, who is also a TCC board member. Stewart added that the tourism coun-

cil is always seeking more local lodges to participate.

Three years ago, the TCC decided to contract out its marketing, and two new vendors have been selected for 2014 for a one-year contract.

Locally owned Footsteps Marketing, LLC, was chosen to handle the full range of digital marketing, including website development/management and marketing, as well as social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, TripAdvisor, and Yelp. Footsteps President Pat Curry said his company will bring a “new intensity” to the job.

The public relations portion of the contract was awarded to Sarah-Jane Johnson. She will create press kits, develop relationships with local media and state tourism organizations, enter “Best Town” contests such as those in Sunset and Outside magazines, and research and develop group sales packages — among other responsibilities. Johnson and Footsteps said they are expected to coordinate their efforts and messages as well as to provide the TCC board with monthly progress reports.

Because TCC members are term-limited, the board recently had a big turnover. In addition to Stewart, Curry and Johnson, other TCC board members include: board chair Jared Ettelson (Village Smithy and Bonfire Coffee), Darren Broome (Aloha Mountain Cyclery), Scott Eden (InterMountain Waste and Recycling), Molly Jacober (Avalanche Ranch), Eric Brendlinger and Jessi Rochel (the town of Carbondale Recreation Department), Lily Feng (Comfort Inn & Suites), Deric Gunshor (Aspen SkiCo), Natasha Lucero (Back Bone Media), Rob Morey (Project Resource Company), Cari Wilder (Kula Yoga), Renae Gustine (town of Carbondale finance director), and Elizabeth Murphy and Frosty Merriott (town of Carbondale trustees).

The TCC board meets at 8 a.m. on the fourth Thursday of every month in the Calaway Room at the Third Street Center. The public is welcome to attend.

The day after the hearing, Garfield County received notice from CRMS that the school is planning to appeal the planning commission’s denial of the L&E request to the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) at a date not yet determined. Both the appeal and the road vacate request would be heard, in that order, in front of the BOCC. According to a Feb. 13 e-mail from Garfield County Planning Manager Tamra Allen, “It is my understanding that if the BOCC upholds the L&E disapproval, the road vacate will not be considered. However, if the BOCC chooses to overturn the L&E disapproval, the road vacate request can then be heard and considered by the BOCC.” The county will be working with CRMS to set a hearing date, which will likely be scheduled for sometime in April.

We got a little muddy and stinky while traipsing around Emma Danciger’s beautiful pastures, but I learned more than I’d ever imagined about bovine sperm and insemination. It’s just one example of why I have loved being a reporter.

The thing is, everyone has a story. It’s what connects us as humans. Our past, our family, our teachers, pets, travels, experiences, goals ‌ they deďŹ ne us. Community journalism allows us to “meetâ€? our neighbors and learn about those things that make them tick, discover hidden talents and inspirations, maybe shine light on an untold memory.

As a reporter, I have been trusted with our friends’ stories — such as Staci Dickerson’s heartfelt decision to shut down Sounds Easy; high-schooler Lucas Pulver’s dream to “make itâ€? as a singer/songwriter; Lyndsey Cynoski’s vision for a new boutique on Main (lulubelle); veteran Adam McCabe’s struggles after returning from Iraq; sweet recollections of Ron Robertson, Carol Rothrock, Ivonne MuĂąoz; and so much

more — and I have been honored.

I also have been humbled; to connect with a fellow human is both enlightening and grounding. What else is there, after all?

So take part in The Sopris Sun; learn someone else’s story. Efforts like these really do take a village ‌ but so does life.

Keep 106 open Dear Editor: My daughter attended Colorado Rocky Mountain School. I fully agree with Jeannie Perry’s recent column about County Road 106. The Rails to Trails Conservancy and National Park Service have studied the public safety impact of trails. Law enforcement personnel interviewed believe that trails make a place safer by increasing the number of alert people who are watching what goes on.

As for me, I love riding my townie bike all the way around Carbondale, down the Rio Grande, back across the beautiful Satank Bridge, through CRMS, and back around. I visit the tree I helped plant on campus some 37 years ago for a friend lost on a climbing trip. I like to admire the garden. The campus is part of our landscape and those of us who like to visit also make it safer.

Basalt residents eligible for BLM advisory council Sopris Sun Staff Report Basalt residents are eligible to apply for a seat on the BLM’s Northwest Colorado Resource Advisory Council, which advises the federal agency on public land issues.

The Northwest Resource Advisory Council consists of 15 citizens with diverse interests in public land management, including conservationists, ranchers, outdoor recreationists, state and local government officials and energy industry representatives, according to a BLM press release. It provides advice to the BLM’s Northwest Colorado District, which includes Colorado River Valley, Grand Junction, Kremmling, Little Snake and White River field offices.

“The advice given to the BLM by these citizen-based Resource Advisory Councils is a vital part of the BLM’s collaborative approach to land management,” said BLM Acting State Director Ruth Welch. “Citizen input enhances our agency’s ability to administer and conserve these lands for the use and enjoyment of current and future generations of Americans.”

The BLM, which manages more land than any other federal agency, has 29 rural advisory councils across the west, where most BLM-managed land is located. The diverse membership of each RAC is aimed at achieving a balanced outlook that the BLM needs for its mission, which is to manage the public lands for multiple uses.

The descriptions for RAC positions are as follows: • Category One – Public land ranchers and representatives of organizations associated with energy and mineral development, the timber industry, transportation

or rights-of-way, off-highway vehicle use, and commercial recreation; • Category Two – Representatives of nationally or regionally recognized environmental organizations, archaeological and historical organizations, dispersed recreation activities, and wild horse and burro organizations; • Category Three – Representatives of state, county, or local elected office; representatives and employees of a state agency responsible for the management of natural resources; representatives of Indian Tribes within or adjacent to the area for which the RAC is organized; representatives and employees of academic institutions who are involved in natural sciences; and the public-at-large.

Five positions are open for nomination on the Northwest RAC this year, including two positions in Category 1, one position in Category 2 and two positions in Category 3. Nominations for the Northwest District RAC must be submitted by March 27 to the Bureau of Land Management, Attn: David Boyd, 2300 River Frontage Rd., Silt, CO 81652. Additional requirements and nomination forms can be found by going to blm.gov or calling 876-9008.

Individuals may nominate themselves or others to serve on an advisory council.

Nominees will be judged on the basis of their training, education and knowledge of the council’s geographical area. Nominees should also demonstrate a commitment to consensus building and collaborative decision-making. All nominations must be accompanied by letters of reference from any represented interests or organizations; a completed background information nomination form; and any other information that speaks to the nominee’s qualifications.

CRES Rams run for skiing in Nordic program

By Todd Anderson and Debbie Bruell Special to The Sopris Sun The big snowfall this winter could not have come during a better year for Marty Madsen’s gym classes at Crystal River Elementary School. This year marks the ďŹ rst time that every child at CRES had the opportunity to go cross-country skiing during gym class.

Since 2008, Madsen has been buying and piecing together cross-country ski equipment to allow some of the young Rams to experience the beneďŹ ts and joys of Nordic skiing each year. Last year Madsen helped to organize the ďŹ rst annual CRES Rams Run Day fundraiser with the goal of raising enough money to purchase equipment so that every student could ski every year.

About 450 kids participated in the Rams Run; 200 of them had signed up sponsors who agreed to make a donation to the school based on how many laps the child

ran around the track on Rams Run Day. “It was very impressive watching the kids run and run and run,� Madsen told The Sopris Sun. “They just didn’t stop!� Over 40 kids, kindergartners through fourth graders, ran over 30 laps, the equivalent of about four miles.

With additional funds provided by the CRES PTO, the Rams Run fundraiser enabled Madsen to purchase enough equipment so that all CRES students, and their teachers, were able to strap on skis and slide around the high school baseball ďŹ eld where Madsen will be coaching high school baseball in just a few weeks.

For many students, the experience was not too different from a trip to Spring Gulch with their parents or an occasional hut trip. However, for the majority of the students, physical education at CRES was their ďŹ rst opportunity to experience Nordic skiing. With gear ranging from

classic 3-pin telemark style equipment to more modern gear, and even newer Snow Pup skis that don’t require special boots for the youngest students, Madsen now has gear for everyone.

According to Madsen, many kids started out with a basic “zombie walk,â€? and then quickly progressed to a more classic skating motion. Their problem-solving skills were quickly engaged as they struggled to stand after each fall. Most students got to experience the thrill of gliding on trails packed by their peers. Some students managed to travel up to two miles and more. This year’s snowfall provided an even longer than normal “PE ski seasonâ€? with more chances for students to hone their skills.Â
