A harrowing winter

By Lucy Kessler and Amelia Potvin On a 70 degree day in February, a group of climate activists from the Roaring Fork Valley carpooled to Denver to meet with over 90 of their compatriots from Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Montana. The Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL) “Wild West Regional Conference” gathered students, retirees, mothers, scientists, park rangers, teachers, clergy and others for a two-day training on how to convince members of Congress to pass a revenue-neutral carbon fee and dividend.

Representatives from the Carbondale and Aspen CCL chapters attended the conference, which provided trainings on current climate science, the political landscape in Washington, and even how to achieve personal breakthroughs through enhancing our listening skills.

Climate change has become the second most polarizing issue in our nation, second only to the approval rating of President Obama. It’s even more controversial than abortion, the death penalty and gun rights. Even so, the tone at CCL’s regional conference was calm and even joyful, with laughter echoing through the church where the meeting was held throughout the day.

I (Lucy Kessler) joined Citizens Climate Lobby at first because I was concerned about the future we face due to escalating climate change. What I didn’t expect were the personal breakthroughs I’ve experienced and the camaraderie that has formed in our chapter.

Indeed, this organization is full of remark-

able people, throughout all 240 United States and international chapters. One example is Bill Barron, a carpenter and ski patroller who volunteers in the Salt Lake City chapter. A shy person by nature, Barron has twice run for Congress in Utah on a single-issue climate platform. Most recently, he improved from less than 1 percent of the vote to 1.5 percent, an improvement of almost 1,500 people willing to vote solely for climate change solutions. His major campaign strategy: a 600-mile bike tour ending at Capitol Reef National Park.

The goal of Citizens Climate Lobby is to pass a revenue-neutral carbon fee and dividend in Congress, by working directly with Congressional delegations in each district in the U.S. In the Roaring Fork Valley, that means lobbying Republican Representative Scott Tipton and Senators Cory Gardner (R) and Michael Bennet (D).

Climate change has been viewed as a partisan issue; however, a recent poll conducted

by Stanford University and the New York Times found that 80 percent of Americans indicate that they’d support tax breaks for businesses to produce more electricity from water, wind and solar power. Seventy-eight percent said they favored the federal government putting limits on the greenhouse gases that U.S. businesses emit.

households would receive a dividend check, and the vast majority of households will receive more than they will pay for in increased energy costs.

When the Carbondale chapter was formed in October of 2014, there were only two other chapters in Colorado, one in Denver and one in Boulder. As of Feb. 7 there were nine active chapters in the state. The only congressional district in Colorado that remains without a CCL presence is district five (Colorado Springs).

The Roaring Fork Valley chapter has met with representatives from Bennet’s and Tipton’s offices, generated 40 letters to the editor and over 60 letters to members of Congress.

We are a group that focuses on what we are for, not what we are against, and believes optimism and inclusivity to be the keys to the chapter’s success.

Every month, the hundreds of chapters across the United States, and even around the world, all congregate on a conference call to coordinate tactics and strategies for the month, listen to a guest speaker, and report successes. “This work is not easy, but it is definitely possible, and since it is possible, I must try,” said Florida CCL member Jay Butera, a retired businessman.

Why did the caterpillar cross the road?

Taking a walk down Satank Road on a beautiful spring-like day in January, I observed a fuzzy

black caterpillar inching its way across the pavement. The appearance of these larvae usually coincides with the April thaw, so I wondered why this one was here now.

Sometimes you have to get away from it all in order to read up on it all. Off I went down the rabbit hole…

Typing “fuzzy black caterpillar” into the Google Images search bar provided multiple matches to my sighting, as well as the common nickname “woolly bear,” of which there are over 250 species.

After clicking on various photos and learning the names of some North American species, then visiting the corresponding Wikipedia pages, I believe the caterpillar I saw was the larva of the Isabella Tiger Moth, which can tolerate cold regions and is found throughout the Rocky Mountains.

But there was a problem. The Isabella larva was black on the ends and reddish brown in the middle. My caterpillar was all black.

The only mention of larva color on the Wikipedia page was under the heading “In culture. “American folklore suggests the woolly bear’s color can predict the severity of the coming winter. More brown meant a mild winter, more black meant a severe winter.

Man arrested aer stabbing on Cooper Place

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Carbondale police reported on Tuesday that a dead woman was found in an apartment building on Cooper Place on Feb. 16, after a man involved in a car wreck on Highway 133 told police he had killed his wife in that apartment building.

Police were not releasing the name of the victim, or of the alleged killer, as of shortly after 11 a.m. on Tuesday, pending notification of the victim’s family and the issuance of an arrest warrant for the suspect.

An autopsy confirmed that the woman died of multiple wounds from a sharp object, and that the case formally is considered a homicide.

This reportedly is the first homicide case in Carbondale since 2003, when Jessie Brooks was tried and convicted for the accidental shooting death of his friend, Bobby Rogers, according to news stories published at the time.

The suspect in this week’s stabbing case remained at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction on Tuesday, after being airlifted there with what a police statement indicated were “serious injuries” sustained in the auto accident.

According to a statement issued by the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District on behalf of the Carbondale Police Department, the incident started with the car wreck on Highway 133, at 7:15 a.m.

It was during the flight to St. Mary’s, according to the police statement, that the driver reportedly told the flight crew he had

killed his wife and told the crew where the body could be found.

At about 2 p.m. on Monday, Carbondale police “responded to the reported location” but did not immediately find the body, the statement explained.

C’dale meth lab suspect busted at Glenwood motel

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent A Carbondale man accused of running a small meth lab in his apartment here saw his bond cut in half by a local judge during his first court appearance, though he was still in jail in lieu of payment of a $5,000 bond shortly after 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Chad Boulter, 26, was arrested at a motel in Glenwood Springs on Valentine’s Day and placed in the Garfield County Jail and charged with possession of heroin, among other allegations.

Boulter was arrested by the Glenwood Springs Police at shortly after 2 p.m. on Feb. 14, according to Glenwood Springs Police Chief Terry Wilson.

Wilson, speaking on Tuesday, said his department got a call at about 2 p.m. on Feb. 14, from “a third party” who informed officers that Boulter had a room at the motel on and that Boulter had told the caller that there was a warrant out for Boulter’s arrest.

Police showed up at the motel a short time later and found Boulter standing on an outside balcony smoking a cigarette.

Wilson said Boulter admitted knowing he was wanted by police, and claimed he had planned to turn himself in to police the following day.

After being arrested, Boulter reportedly asked if he could retrieve some items from his room, allegedly including a backpack containing capped syringes.

Police went into the room, Wilson said, and found what appeared to be drugs and drug paraphernalia, as well as a second man who disavowed ownership of any drugs the police might find. Wilson said the second man was not arrested.

A later search of the room, Wilson said, turned up suspected drugs that ultimately tested positive as heroin, but no methamphetamine. The search also allegedly turned up

a number of syringes.

Wilson noted that the warrant for Boulter’s arrest directed that he be held in lieu of paying a bond of $7,500.

According to records at the Garfield County Jail, Boulter was jailed on charges of possession, manufacture and distribution of a Schedule 2 substance (methamphetamine), possession of heroin, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was formally advised of the charges against him in Garfield County District Court on Tuesday, where his bond was reduced from $10,250 to $5,000.

Boulter allegedly ran afoul of the law on Feb. 5, when Carbondale police officers responded to a telephone call requesting a “welfare check” at Boulter’s apartment in the 400 block of Garfield Avenue in Carbondale.

Police reported that the caller suspected someone was using meth (a kind of speed) at the home, and that when they arrived at the residence they “recognized an odor consistent with methamphetamine production.”

After getting permission from a resident, the officers searched and found “what appeared to be a methamphetamine lab” on the premises.

Boulter reportedly was at home when police arrived, but was not arrested on the spot because police were instructed to hold off by the Ninth Judicial District Attorney’s Office, according to Schilling.

A warrant for Boulter’s arrest was issued on the evening of Feb. 6.

According to an officer at the jail, Boulter’s bond had been raised from an initial amount of $7,000 to $10,250, an increase that Chief Wilson said was probably due to the added charge of heroin possession on top of the allegations contained in the Carbondale warrant.

Wilson said the reports filed as of Tuesday by his officers did not indicate whether a follow up investigation had been started as a result of the Feb. 14 arrest and the discovery of the unnamed additional man in Boulter’s room.

The suspect in the case was placed in “protective custody,” according to the police statement, while he is being treated for his injuries.

Potential teen brawl reported on Sopris Avenue

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Carbondale police say there was an apparent brawl brewing in town between Carbondale teens and a group of teens from the Rifle area on Feb. 12.

The near-fight reportedly took place about 12:30 p.m., in the parking lot shared by the Carbondale Branch Library and the Bridges High School facility on Sopris Avenue, and was reported to police by “someone in the library,” according to Police Chief Gene Schilling.

According to a summary of police activities last week, written by Carbondale Town Manager Jay Harrington, the “juveniles from Rifle were gone” by the time police arrived on the scene. Harrington’s summary reported that “it was reported that a group of juveniles from Rifle were attempting to start a fight with a group of juveniles from Carbondale.”

Harrington wrote that the matter currently is under investigation.

Schilling, in an e-mail exchange with The Sopris Sun on Tuesday, wrote that the reporting party “thought there was about 10 people involved” and that “it doesn’t appear there was any criminal behavior at this time.”

In response to questions from The Sun, Schilling wrote that the reporting party did not indicate there were any weapons involved, and that there was “no physical fighting that we know of.”

He said his officers have spoken with students at Bridges High School, and that “they said there have been issues and wouldn’t tell us what” those issues entailed.

“We have identified the Carbondale people involved but are currently trying to identify the Rifle people,” Schilling concluded in one of the e-mails.

Schilling did not report any arrests as a result of the incident.

Trustees propose rodeo roofing Sopris Sun Staff Report Town officials are applying for a $49,000 grant from the Garfield County Federal Mineral Lease District, which hands out funds originally paid to federal and state regulators by energy companies drilling for gas and oil in this area, for use in building a roof over a set of bleachers at the Gus Darien Riding Arena and making improvements to the arena’s announcers booth, according to town manager Jay Harrington’s weekly memo to trustees and staff. As part of the application, Harrington reported, the town expects that matching funds of $10,000 each (a total of $20,000) will come from the board of trustees and the Rodeo Board that stages a summer-long series of rodeos at the arena.

In other items from Harrington’s report: Local youths are filling up extracurricular classes at the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center. Harrington reported that a newly inaugurated youth dodgeball class, started on Feb. 13, drew 24 participants in its first session. In addition, the pre-school Motion Mondays and Whacky Wednesday’s drew more than 20 participants and their parents in recent sessions, Harrington wrote. That was in addition to the ongoing offerings of climbing classes, which include Spider Monkeys for the very young, beginning and advanced climbing courses, a Climbing Club and a new Learning To Lead class for those interested in learning how to be the lead climber of a group attempting a climbing route. The new Learning to Lead course, Harrington explained in his memo, offers instruction on “the difference between a top-rope belay and a dynamic lead belay, and is a perfect training ground for the participants to take these skills outside to real rock.” Continuing offerings at the Recreation Center, Harrington noted, in-

clude the Youth Basketball Leagues for kids of different age groups, and an Adult Volleyball League on Monday nights.

A new beginners fitness program, offered in collaboration with the Valley Settlement Project of the Manaus Fund, “is geared toward first-time participants in a fitness program,” Harrington reported. “Our group instructors will provide a non-intimidating class that trains the participant to use our fitness equipment and provides them with important exercise strategies and fitness goals.”

Meanwhile, Harrington reported, drop-in sports events remain popular, including basketball on Wednesday nights, soccer on Friday nights and pickleball on Saturday mornings.

In other recreation news: Harrington reported that the Parks & Recreation Commission has approved the 10-year Comprehensive Parks, Recreation & Trails Master Plan and is recommending it be approved by the town’s board of trustees. The plan, Harrington reported, will be on the trustees' agenda on March 10.

To prevent damage to town athletic fields, the soccer goals at North Face Park and the Hendrick Ranch field have been locked together to prevent early-season play, Harrington wrote. He explained that the turf in general is vulnerable to damage by players at this point, and that the Hendrick field was aerated and seeded last week, necessitating the town’s action to delay early springtime use of the fields.

The Planning & Zoning Commission has finished its latest review of the draft Unified Development Code, and the P&Z comments are being sent to the consultant on the UDC project, Clarion Associates. A second draft of the proposed UDC will be sent to the town, for review by town boards, commissions, staff and the general public. A public meeting will be scheduled.

SaTURDay, Feb. 7: At five minutes past midnight, police stopped a car on Main Street for having broken taillights, and ended up ticketing the driver for not having a valid driver’s license and for being a minor in possession of marijuana, and an underage passenger for possessing both marijuana and liquor.

SaTURDay, Feb. 7: at 3:41 a.m. a local man was ticketed for littering on Highway 133.

SaTURDay, Feb. 7: at 3:10 p.m. police got a report about a local woman losing “an exorbitant amount of money from an online dating scam.” The local police contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation for assistance with the case.

SUNDay, Feb. 8: at 3:32 p.m. police arrested a local man for masturbating in public and for trying to “influence a public servant.”

MONDay, Feb. 9: at 12:34 p.m. police were contacted by a man who said his bicycle had been stolen from the RFTA Park & Ride bike rack. The bike was not locked.

MONDay, Feb. 9: at 6:24 p.m. police were called upon to mediate between a man and his former girlfriend, both of whom accused the other of harassment.

Police found no criminal actions in the matter, and advised the two to keep away from each other in the future.

Spoken word artists return to Roaring Fork Valley Visiting six Carbondale schools Sopris Sun Staff Report For the third year in a row, Aspen Words (formerly known as the Aspen Writers’ Foundation) has brought acclaimed bilingual spoken word teaching artists to work with students in Roaring Fork Valley middle and high schools.

From Feb.17-27, this year’s trio of poets is fanning out across the Roaring Fork Valley, encouraging and inspiring young people in 16 schools to ďŹ nd their voices and express their feelings through poetry.

In Carbondale, they will lead assemblies and bilingual workshops for students from Roaring Fork High School, Bridges High School, Carbondale Middle School, Carbondale Community School, Colorado Rocky Mountain School and Ross Montessori School. Valley-wide, they will reach over 3,000 seventh through 12th graders in just nine days, according to a press release.

This is visit number three for Myrlin “Myrlindoâ€? Hepworth from Phoenix. He’s joined again this year by poet Logan “Dirty Verbsâ€? Phillips from Tucson — who taught with Hepworth here for two weeks last February and also as a guest of the RE-1 School District in the spring of 2013 — plus ďŹ rst time visitor, award-winning young female poet Mercedez Holtry from Albuquerque.

The project will culminate in three free events this year. The ďŹ rst is the second annual Youth Poetry Slam to be held at the

Third Street Center in Carbondale on Feb. 27. Young poets from throughout the valley will take the stage at 6:30 p.m. (registration opens at 5:30 pm); poems in both English and Spanish will be welcome. Judges will be selected from the audience and will score each poet on both content and delivery.

Other audience members will be encouraged to get involved in the fun by voicing their support for their favorite poets and responding with cheers or boos to the judges’ scoring. The community at large is invited to come out and support the valley’s brave young voices.

The Youth Poetry Slam will be followed immediately at 9 p.m. by an all-ages cumbia dance party led by DJ Logan Phillips. The party will feature Phillips’ extensive collection of Latin music from around the hemisphere. Basic instruction in cumbia will be offered from the stage. Everyone is welcome, whether attending the poetry slam or just coming for the cumbia party. Admission is free but donations to help cover costs will be welcome.

The third and ďŹ nal free event will be Feb. 28, at The Wheeler Opera House in Aspen: “Aloud: A High Altitude Poetry Jamâ€? featuring the spoken word artistry of Hepworth, Phillips and Holtry. Winners from Friday’s Youth Poetry Slam will join the poets on stage. The performance starts at 6:30 p.m.

RFHS roboters snag silver

New library titles

The Roaring Fork High School robot team recently placed second at the regional tournament at the CMC Spring Valley campus on Feb. 14. The team is comprised of Nick Penzel, Jayvin Krych, Wes Engstrom, Jimmy Serrano and Knoll Featherstone; Jay Engstrom is their coach. The competition revolves around designing, building, programming and driving a remote control robot to complete a set of tasks. A La Junta angler has crushed the previous state record for flathead catfish, according to a Colorado Parks and Wildlife press release. On Jan. 19, Tony Chavez pulled a 27-pound flathead catfish from the still basin below John Martin Reservoir.

The gigantic fish was 39 inches in length. The previous record was 15 pounds and 32 inches in length. Flathead catfish were stocked at John Martin sporadically from 1994 to 2009 and were acquired from the state of Arkansas through special trades. “Flathead catfish have tremendous growth potential,” said a CPW spokesman. “Fish weighing well over 50 pounds are common in the Midwestern states. The angling world record for flathead catfish is more than 120 pounds.” John Martin Reservoir is located southwest of Lamar.

Chromebooks: One per student, 4th grade and up Funded by mill levy override

By Debbie Bruell Sopris Sun Correspondent The Roaring Fork School District is making a dramatic shift in how technology is being integrated into the learning process, thanks in large part to funds approved by voters for a mill levy override in 2011.

Until recently, when a teacher wanted to do a class project that involved computers, the teacher would reserve the school’s computer lab on a specific day (or days) when it was available. Some schools had a few computer labs; some schools had only one or two labs with about 25 computers.

Last spring the school board approved a Chromebook 1-to-1 Initiative — a three-year plan to purchase a total of 3,600 Chromebooks, to serve the approximately 3,600 students in fourth through 12th grades. Soon every classroom teacher in those grades will have a cart of Chromebooks available to use whenever they’re needed. Teachers will be able to integrate computer-use into their lesson plans without worrying about whether or not computers will be available. Students will move seamlessly from working on and off the computer without re-locating to a computer lab.

Along with this increase in students’ access to computers, the district created a new position this school year to help teachers use technology as strategically and effectively as possible. Ben Bohmfalk is the district’s first full-time technology integration facilitator.

Bohmfalk’s role has been to help teachers identify ways that technology can help them incorporate more creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration in the classroom. He emphasizes that technology is not meant to be “one more thing” teachers need to teach, but rather a tool to support teachers’ existing goals. Bohmfalk also helps teachers connect with each other, sharing success stories about technology-use in one classroom with teachers across the district.

Bohmfalk told The Sopris Sun that he is seeing teachers and students “take off” with projects that would not have been possible before the Chromebook Initiative.

Basalt Middle School teachers Craig Macek and Jane Douglas have “flipped” their math classes this year. Instead of lecturing during class time and assigning problems for students to complete as homework, Macek and Douglas create weekly video tutorials explaining new concepts. Students watch the video tutorials as their homework, pausing and rewatching challenging concepts as many times as needed. Then, in class, students work through problems while the teacher is available to help them if they get stuck.

“That allows me to work with an individual or small groups of students while the others use their Chromebooks to review concepts I explained in the video,” said Macek.

Carbondale Middle School English teacher Brittany Bergin-Foss is moving toward a “paper-less” classroom.

Her students use their Chromebooks to conduct research, write and revise papers, provide feedback on their classmates’ papers, and turn in their final assignments — all without the teacher ever going to the copy machine and students ever pressing “print.”

At Basalt High School, Ticia Ingram’s geography/English language development students used Chromebooks to create their own digital maps, applying what they learned about human migration factors to plot their own journeys from Central America and Mexico to Basalt.

What’s a Chromebook?

“The Chromebook is really just a portal to the web,” Bohmfalk told The Sopris Sun. Rather than running software programs in the traditional sense — programs that require updates and are vulnerable to viruses — they run apps that are designed to interact with information on the web. As a result, they require far less maintenance. Teach-

level were using Chromebooks in the classroom. In the spring of 2014 the school board approved the purchase of an additional 2,300 Chromebooks at the cost of about $455,000 per year for the next three years (including hardware, staff support, and wifi infrastructure.)

Too much technology?

Bohmfalk is well aware that there are concerns about students spending too much time on computers. “It’s not about having kids behind a screen all the time,” Bohmfalk explained, “It’s about kids having access to computers when they need them ... and using computers strategically.”

Fire board considers master plan framework Board members also blast î‚Še Sun

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent The elected leaders of the Carbondale ďŹ re district, at a meeting on Feb. 11, laid out a framework for updating the district’s decadeold master plan, including how to engage the public in coming up with ideas for rescuing the district from its ongoing ďŹ nancial difďŹ culties.

The district recently hired two consulting ďŹ rms — Mark Chain Consulting LLC of Carbondale and the Almont Associates ďŹ rm of Port Orange, Fla. — to divide between them the chores linked with the master planning effort, at a total cost of nearly $87,000.

The two ďŹ rms are splitting the contract for the master planning effort, with just over $53,000 going to the Chain group and nearly $34,000 to the Almont ďŹ rm.

The master plan project is an outgrowth of a 2013 tax hike election, in which voters rejected the district’s request for additional tax revenues to overcome losses of revenues due to the effects of the recent national recession.

District ofďŹ cials have warned taxpayers that the district is facing serious ďŹ scal problems and must ďŹ nd ways to boost its revenues or be faced with cutting the quantity and quality of services provided to district residents.

At present, district ofďŹ cials have linked the master plan to prospects for putting to voters another tax-hike question of some sort.

Steering committee At the Feb. 11 board meeting, consultant Mark Chain and his subcontractor, Leslie Lamont of Lamont Planning Services, also of Carbondale, stuck with their recommendation for a nine-member “steering committee,â€? to be made up of two members of the ďŹ re board and seven others appointed from the district at large, to aid the consultants in gathering public input about the district and its needs.

The Chain group’s portion of the planning process is to be largely a matter of “leading the public involvement process, which entails community surveys, community outreach, and website and communication services, along with the ďŹ nancial feasibility process portion of the Master Plan,â€? according to a statement issued by the district when the consultants were selected.

The steering committee is important, Lamont told the board, because it provides a method for sifting through issues and problems without the need for the board itself to meet every time an issue arises.

Plus, she said, “The committee is also your ambassadors to the community,� providing a conduit for information to the public without the board’s direct involvement.

District board member Carl Smith at one point asked whether a schedule of monthly meetings, as proposed by Chain, would be enough to work through the complexities represented by a master planning process.

Smith suggested the committee might need to meet every two weeks, or perhaps weekly, to

get the job done in the six months allocated to the process. “That’s a lot to ask,� Lamont countered, suggesting that additional meetings could be called for if the monthly-meeting schedule proved inadequate.

Michael Kennedy Fire board member Chain added that scheduling too many meetings might discourage public involvement, as the committee will be made up mostly of volunteers who very likely will have other obligations in addition to their service to the district. “However we’re going to manage them (the meetings),� Kennedy said, “let’s not make it a cumbersome process, because we’ve got to get this thing going.�

budget for 2016 The Feb. 11 meeting covered a broad range of topics, including Fire Chief Ron Leach’s report on his plan to start working on a budget for 2016 as a backdrop to the master planning process and future debates over whether the district should again seek a tax hike from its constituents.

When asked to estimate the district’s tax valuation prospects for the coming years, Leach told the board, “the numbers seem to go all over the map, from ďŹ ve percent to 30 percent.â€?

He said that real estate professionals he has talked to have pegged property valuation increases at “about 15 percent.�

Looking at it conservatively, Leach noted that the district expects to collect a total of about $1.5 million in tax proceeds for last year, and that a cautious estimate might be an increase of 10 percent, or roughly $150,000 for next year. “Ten percent will not right this ďŹ nancial problem that we have,â€? he told the board, adding that tax-valuation ďŹ gures from the county assessor’s ofďŹ ce will not be available until next August.

CCaH accepting R2 proposals for ’16

Dandelion Day seeks volunteers

The Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities is accepting 2016 proposals for its R2 Gallery in the Launchpad.

CCAH is seeking proposals that feature “enticing, unique and educational exhibitions that serve local artists but also reach out to regional and even national artists as well,” said a press release. Proposals may be for an exhibition of individuals’ work, or a group show (juried or invitational). Two and three dimensional works, as well as video installations will be considered. Food for fines Garfield County libraries are accepting non-perishable food items in lieu of fines through the month of February.

Each food item counts as a $1 credit against pending fines.

Credits can only be applied to current fines and cannot go toward lost materials or fees. Food items will be given to LIFTUP and cannot be expired. Suggested donations include canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, jelly and pasta.

RF Conservancy slates Snow Day Through a Facebook and in-office fund-raising project spearheaded by Lynn Kirchner of Amoré Realty and David Clark, more than 20 folks recently donated enough money to carpet Lois and David Hayes’ home. The Roaring Fork Conservancy holds its annual Snow to Flow Day on McClure Pass from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 28. The cost is $20 for RFC members and $30 for nonmembers. The field trip will demonstrate how spring river conditions are predicted by looking at snowpack. Derrick Wyle (National Resource Conservation Center surveyor) and the RFC’s Sarah Johnson will guide the tour. English In Action celebrates 20 years on Feb. 26 Sopris Sun Staff Report English In Action is celebrating its 20th anniversary at the Wyly Community Art Center from 5 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 26. The organization invites community members — including their tutors, students and supporters — for an evening of appetizers from around the world, drinks and music.

The event honors the people who are making a difference in the community by bridging the communication gap. People to be recognized at the event include: Julie Fox-Rubin (Founder of English In Action), Polly Pollard (Longest Serving Tutor), Michael McLain and Simon Perez (Longest Tutoring Pair), Adriana Cabrera Torres (Extraordinary Student/Volunteer), Michele Cardamone (Exceptional Community Member), and all the volunteers who participate in English In Action.

English In Action was founded 20 years ago to help adult immigrants in the Roaring Fork Valley learn English and to foster strong cross-cultural friendships.

“Our primary service is a one-on-one tutoring program,” said an EIA spokeswoman. “We also offer work-

shops and weekly small group tutoring.”

Since 1994, English in Action has served nearly 1,000 adult immigrants, with the help of nearly 800 volunteers.

“Join us in celebrating two decades of work to make our community a welcoming place to live, where everyone has the opportunity to pursue their dreams.”

The celebration will also include a margarita contest featuring concoctions created by some of the Roaring Fork Valley’s best bartenders. Attendees will get a chance to vote for their favorite “punch.” Classical guitarist James Katzenberger will perform as well.

Ski for Sisu thanks Dear Editor: On behalf of the Mount Sopris Nordic Council, I would like to thank the generous community that supported our 23rd annual Ski for Sisu skiathon. This year’s event achieved number or records. The Nordic community turned out in record-breaking numbers, which is reflected in the money we raised for trail grooming at our local crosscountry ski area, Spring Gulch. It costs over $500 per day to keep Spring Gulch groomed and maintained. Approximately 20 percent of the Nordic Council’s budget is raised by this event alone.

A total of 1,925 kilometers were skied by 128 skiers ages 4 to 86.

Forty-two people skied 25 kilometers or more. Seven people skied 50 kilometers! Congratulations to these hearty participants: Helen Carlsen, Laurie Guevara-Stone, Patrick Johnson, Timothy Lindholm, Jan Stenstadvold, and Tripp and Gabriella Sutro.

Caterpillar om page 2 mildest winters in memory, my all-black caterpillar didn’t seem to be a very good weather forecaster. Besides, woolly bears are supposed to predict winter weather in the fall, not in the middle of winter.

I thought I’d explore the relationship between “the color of woolly bears and winter” by typing that phrase into the search engine.

From the results I chose the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) website, where I learned that “the coloring indicates the age of the woolly bear caterpillar. The caterpillars shed their skins or molt six times before reaching adult size. With each successive molt, their colors change, becoming less black and more reddish.” So apparently my all-black caterpillar was very young. Maybe the warm weather caused it to hatch from its mother moth’s eggs too early?

Nope. The NOAA website said woolly bears actually hatch in summer and fall, then hibernate in their caterpillar state through the winter by allowing themselves to slowly freeze all but their interior cells which are protected by “a natural organic antifreeze called glycerol.”

According to Wikipedia, glycerol is a sugar alcohol compound that is derived from plant and animal sources for use in a wide range of products from pharmaceuticals to anti-freeze.

In the form of nitro-glycerin, it creates dynamite. I get a mental picture of exploding caterpillars. Eeeeew.

All sources confirm that after the mature woolly bear comes out of its frozen hibernation, it spends a few days eating (weeds mainly), then mates, then spins a cocoon, and emerges a few

weeks later as an adult moth, which lays eggs and the cycle starts all over again.

But the caterpillar I saw probably wouldn’t be doing any of these things, because for at least another month or two (I hope), there won’t be any green plants for it to eat, or as far as I can tell, other caterpillars to mate with.

What would become of the little guy? Could he go back into a deep freeze and wake up again when true spring arrives, or was he doomed to freeze to death that very night when the temperature dipped below 30?

Searching “Can woolly bears freeze to death” brought me to a web page titled “Avoid Multiple Freeze/Thaw Cycles: Woolly Bear Caterpillars,” on the blogsite of Promega, a biotechnology company.

Here I learned that a recent study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology found an “increased mortality (death) and tissue damage associated with repeated freezing that is not seen in sustained freeze events.” Odds are my caterpillar won’t be participating in the April mating frenzy.

The article concluded with, “As snow covers become less predictable and climate warms, understanding how multiple freeze/thaw events affect the physiology of freeze-tolerant organisms poses a fascinating set of questions for biologists to ask.”

I guess I’m not the only one who wonders about these things!

Fire board om page 9 Media policy The board also had somewhat heated discussion about the district’s relatively new policy restricting public comments about district business to board president Gene Schilling or, if Schilling is unable to do it, to Kennedy.

Schilling, stressing that “this is my opinion,” conceded that board members, as elected officials, have the right to speak to news reporters about district business.

But, he continued, “it seems like whenever there’s something that people (dissenting board members) don’t like, it goes into the press.”

Schilling was highly critical of The Sopris Sun, which he accused of trying to “control” how the district is run by publishing what Schilling felt were critical or negative stories about district decisions and policies.

Singling out Smith, who was elected in 2014 and has been critical of certain board actions before the election and since, Schilling

charged that the media is “ … try to use their influence, and I think they suck you into it.”

Smith responded that there have been fewer than six “non-unanimous” votes on the board since he was voted onto the board, and that he supported the idea that Schilling and Kennedy should be the official spokespersons for the district.

But, Smith added, “There’s always going to be something we’re not agreeing on,” and he would continue to speak out concerning board matters when he feels it is warranted.

Kennedy, concurring with Schilling’s views, said he understands that elected board members have the right and obligation to talk to news reporters.

But, he said, board members should exercise caution to avoid starting “a pissing contest … in the newspapers” among board members who have differing views.

Agreeing with Schilling that the papers are guilty of “picking and choosing” what to publish, he noted that the paper at one point ran

stories based on e-mails among board members, and declared, “I think that’s bull crap.”

He later opined, “I don’t think Lynn Burton (editor of The Sopris Sun) needs to be privy to everything everybody discusses on this board.”

Kennedy later clarified, by telephone to this reporter, that e-mails between board members do not always reflect what is said at board meetings, which are open to the public.

“I think The Sopris Sun should get their information from the public meetings,” he told The Sopris Sun on Wednesday.

At the Feb. 11 board meeting, Kennedy also brought up a controversial ladder truck the district bought three years ago, and maintained an article The Sun published about the purchase did not accurately explain the financial arrangements surrounding the deal.

“We saved the taxpayers thousands of dollars,” Kennedy said. “That (the financing) was a smart business decision on our part … .”

Fire district accepting steering committee applications Sopris Sun Staff Report The Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District is accepting applications for members of the public to serve on a master plan steering committee, according to a press release. The application deadline is March 4.

Candidates should be available to attend up to five meetings from March through July. Fire board members Mike Kennedy and Carl Smith will also serve on the committee; up to seven members of the public will be appointed.

Each steering committee member should be familiar with their neighborhood, geographic area or community interest.
