The play is based on the popular novels of the same name. “Our production is a prequel to ‘Peter Pan,’� said play director Kether Axelrod. It takes place when Peter was just a nameless orphan boy and Captain Hook was just a two-bit pirate named Black Stashe.

Wendy's mom was a little girl named Molly and she meets Peter on board a British Frigate called the Neverland. A shipwreck strands them all on an island that will soon be named Neverland. And then, adventures unfold: Peter meets the natives and is given his name; Captain Hook accidently cuts off his hand; a crocodile swallows a kitchen timer and develops a taste for pirates.

The students have been rehearsing since late September and about 25 are involved as cast and crew. “The show is really fun for kids, but also provides a lot of laughs for the adults,â€? Axelrod told The Sopris Sun. “There is some humor for grownups that will go over the little ones’ heads ‌ Please support theater in our schools and come see the show.â€?

Same sex thanks Dear Editor: We missed it the first time around, but in The Sopris Sun “Review of 2014” article we learned that late last year the town of Carbondale adopted a symbolic resolution in support of same sex marriage.

Way to go, Carbondale.

This is one more reason Two Rivers Unitarian Universalist church loves this town.

Now the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to decide whether our constitution requires all 50 states to recognize same sex marriage.

If the court doesn’t already know the answer to that, Unitarian Universalists who are standing on the side of love as a nationwide association of congregations will tell them that all people — regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression — deserve respect, love, dignity and equal rights.

Every time a court makes a decision in favor of marriage equality, it lifts us up as a nation because we are that much closer to the ideals set forth in our constitution, which promises us “equal protection of the laws.”

LGBTQ couples that commit to the covenant of marriage deserve the legal benefits that everyone else receives. We are all human beings worthy of the same protections and rights. TRUU cherishes the fact that we are part of a community that believes the same.

Spot on Dear Editor: In response to Barbara Sophia Ulrych’s letter to The Sopris Sun, I think she was spot on with her observance of the changes that are slowly happening to Carbondale. I call it the Aspen Tsunami.

Having lived in the valley since the 1960s, I have watched influences cascade right down the valley — some good and some very scary.

Please be very vigilant in your planning as trustees and try to maintain the character that makes the town special. Thoughtful, pragmatic thinking ahead in a timely manner will help alleviate future problems. Thoughtless infill and greed can go hand and hand. Less is more. Leave some breathing space for future generations.

Dear Editor: I am sending you this letter rather than coming to your meeting as I simply cannot hear anything you say at the meetings when

I am in the audience as the acoustics of that building are horrible and have been since day one!

But aside from that, I am e-mailing each of you so you will get my comments on the over building on the nice lots in old town Carbondale.

We went through this a few years back and I thought it had been addressed.

Do we really want huge, Aspen-type buildings built here? And on corners where they stick out like sore thumbs?

And when did the lot at Second and Sopris Avenue get changed to “high density” when they were all low density in the area?

I am concerned because the place at Seventh and Sopris Avenue is up for sale and while I was told it is low density it still means we can have some monstrosities, like the ones built at Sopris Avenue and Weant, built on it.

I really think it is the town council’s responsibility to keep old town within reasonable building parameters and not let big money talk for you. We have already had that go around with the old library building.

Do we have to go through that again with our lots and then down the road say, “oh, we probably should not have done all of that infill.” Maybe this lady does build nice expensive buildings, but when they buy into a town to just build as much on a lot as they possibly can, I think it is your responsibility to shut that down and try to control sensible building codes.

We have enough build-out as far as building on every nook and cranny in town, such as the school district going to over build on the soccer field at Bridges. That is a crime as that field is used so much and is one of the last nice old places in Carbondale, and do we really need all of that much “low cost” housing and all of the traffic confusion that it will create?

These are just a few of the things that have been bothering me about some of your decisions, so I am begging you to let your good judgment be your guide as the next four-plex or huge house could be in your back yard.

LIFT-UP thanks Dear Editor: On behalf of everyone at LIFT-UP, I want to thank the generous members of our community for your strong support in 2014.

With your help, we were able to serve 5,887 local families (17,322 people one or more times from our seven area food pantries) distributing 35,093 bags of food. The Extended Table soup kitchens in Rifle and Glenwood Springs served 18,509 meals, which is a record in 19 years of operation. Our devoted volunteers gave 18,141 hours of service at the pantries, soup kitchens and thrift stores.

LIFT-UP’s thrift stores in Rifle and Parachute generated over $250,000 in sales to help fund our vital programs and services, while

And we thank the churches, businesses, grantors, foundations and individuals that support LIFT-UP financially so that people in need can find the help they need during times of economic difficulty. We also thank our local newspapers and radio stations for their invaluable assistance in communicating with the public. Trustees approve 2015 special events schedule Sopris Sun Staff Report The Carbondale Board of Trustees approved a special events schedule for 2015 on Tuesday night, but not before hearing a few residents sound off about what they said are long-standing and persistent noise problems related to live music and other events.

Becky Young, who lives near Fourth Street Plaza at Third and Garfield, said she gets it from both Sopris Park to the west, and from downtown.

“My neighborhood is part of the noise corridor … it’s incredibly loud at my house,” said the long-time Carbondale resident.

For one thing, Young said she’d like to bring her 87-year-old father to live with her from Denver, but he can’t tolerate the noise.

After about a half hour of discussion, the trustees voted 5-0 to approve a special events schedule proposed by the Parks and Recreation Department that authorizes a

total of 12 events in Sopris Park and Fourth Street Plaza, plus the weekly farmer’s market in downtown.

After a one-year hiatus, regularly scheduled concerts at Sopris Park will return with Second Sunday on June 14, July 12 and Aug. 9. Amy Kimberly, who has advised organizers Steve Standiford and Marty Silverstein on the series, told the trustees the hours will be 4 to 7 p.m.

Standiford operates the Steve’s Guitars live music venue in the Dinkel Building, while Silverstein is on the Parks & Recreation Committee.

The event series kicks off with Dandelion Day on May 9 and concludes with Celtic Fest/Oktoberfest on Oct. 2-3.

In a memo to staff, recreation director Jeff Jackel told the trustees the Carbondale Special Events Task Force met to discuss special events and Main Street closures on Nov. 6 and Dec. 11 last year. The committee was comprised of Jake Boyles, Jeri Alberts, Frank Nadel, Amy Kimberly, Allyn

Harvey, Marty Silverstein, Andrea Stewart, Carol Bruno, Sarah Wood and Kristen Garwood. After hearing from concerned citizens during the two meetings, the task force recommended limiting the number of special events at Sopris Park.

One of last summer’s special events at Sopris Park was apparently some sort of religious gathering that included amplified preaching. Patricia Phelan, who backed Young in her noise concerns, told the trustees that Jesus spoke to “thousands of people … without amplification.” Town manager Jay Harrington said the religious gathering will be held on the south side of the Bridges Center this summer.

About a half dozen residents spoke on both sides of the music and noise issue on Tuesday night. Bill Laemmel, who lives at Seventh and Colorado, said that music “calms the savage beast,” questioned calling it “noise” and said events in parks are going fairly well. “ … (events are) good for businesses. People come to town.”

During trustee comments, AJ Hobbs said the younger generation wants to see more music and more festivities. “ … it (music) brings life to a community,” he said.

Hobbs said he’d also like for the town to consider closing Main Street from the Village Smithy to Carbondale Beer Works for pedestrian use only in the summer, or at least experiment with such a closure for one week a month. Harrington replied that if people think music in the parks is controversial, “ … street closures have a whole different level.”

Other trustees action from Tuesday night includes: • Continuing the 191 Sopris Avenue variance discussion to Feb. 10; • Approved special event liquor licenses for: Advocate Safehouse (Viva la Woman), Riverbridge Regional Center (Imagine), Carbondale Community School (Retro Ski Party) and for the Mt. Sopris Rec Riders (annual fund-raiser).

Energy conservation tax-hike nears the table

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Town officials want to come up with a stable funding source for Carbondale’s ambitious goal of reducing local energy consumption by 20 percent, petroleum consumption by 25 percent and getting 30 percent of the town’s electricity from alternative, renewable sources, all over the next five years.

In line with those goals, at a Jan. 20 meeting of the Board of Trustees, the trustees directed representatives of the Clean Energy Economy for the Region (CLEER) and the Community Office of Resource Efficiency (CORE) to look into asking local voters in 2016 to authorize a package of fees, taxes or other means to generate some or all of the needed revenue.

The plan is known as Clean Energy 2020 for Carbondale, and is one part of a broader program with other towns, school districts and other entities within Garfield County.

At the Jan. 20 meeting in Carbondale, only one of five options presented to the trustees was completely rejected — a sales tax— according to Trustee Pam Zentmyer, who has been working closely with CLEER and CORE on the town’s energy goals.

“We kind of decided that the sales tax option was not the best,” Zentmyer said of the Jan. 20 discussion, citing concerns that a sales tax might not be appropriate for the concept of funding for energy-efficiency programs and policies, and that the voters might not be easily swayed to impose a new tax on themselves.

The remaining options include: • Use of the town’s energy-related franchise fees to pay for programs designed to achieve the town’s energy-related goals; • The addition of “a small percentage to all utility bills, collected by utilities, disbursed to the town;”

• Adding a fee onto water-utility bills sent out to all local water-system consumers to offset the costs of treating water and wastewater; • Dedication to energy planning of a percentage of the mineral severance-tax and mineral leasing fees, or mineral-impact fees, collected by federal and state authorities and passed through to towns impacted by energy-industry activities such as oil and gas drilling.

In 2012 the town received $456,000 in severance taxes and mineral leasing fees, but the amount dropped to $313,000 in 2013.

Zentmyer noted that the town’s trustees recently agreed to devote 20 percent of the mineral-impact fees to Carbondale's energy-related programs, but that policy is “on a discretionary basis” that can be revised or jettisoned by a future board of trustees.

The idea of asking voters to validate the decision would be to, in effect, make it a permanent part of the town’s financial operations.

The water-bill fee, Zentmyer continued, is in keeping with Town Hall’s conclusion that the water/wastewater treatment plants comprise “our biggest energy hog.”

Gus Darien ice rink is a hot item Sopris Sun Staff Report The town’s ice rinks are proving to be increasingly popular, according to indications from Town Manager Jay Harrington in his weekly memo to the board of trustees.

For the week of Jan. 19-23, Harrington wrote, the town had “full rink rentals of the Gus Darien Ice,” including a skating party for the kids at the Carbondale Community School on Jan. 23, from 1-2:30 p.m. and a private party later that same day, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., and another private party rented the rink on Jan. 24 from 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Harrington did not identify the parties who had reserved the rink for private events. But he reminded recipients of the memo that the town posts ice rink rentals and ice conditions on the town’s Facebook page (do a Google search for Carbondale on Facebook) and on the town’s website (www.carbondalerec.com).

Harrington also reported that a recent switch from early-morning ice maintenance work at the rink, to doing the work in the evenings, “seems to be helping to maintain good ice conditions for our programming.”

In other wintertime impacts, Harrington reported that the town’s streets crew continues “attacking ice on shaded streets,” where the sun fails to do its job due to tree shade or shadows cast by overhanging buildings.

The town also is filling potholes caused by an early freeze-thaw cycle, wherein warm afternoon temperatures melt the snow and ice on or adjoining the streets, and freezing temperatures at night turn the resulting water into ice.

Harrington urged the trustees to “please call and let Public Works know where your favorite pothole is located.” The same presumably is true for members of the public.

At the same time that crews are dealing with the ice, the town’s street sweeper continues to respond to the exposure of the street

surfaces, and the resulting layers of grit and dust.

Members of the town parks department crew also are being kept busy, doing “routine maintenance on parks and waste stations around down,” Harrington reported, as well as building new sawhorses for use at food booths serving Potato Day and other civic events.

The crews also were put to work taking down Christmas decorations, Harrington reported.

On the bureaucratic side of things, Harrington wrote, the town’s auditors were scheduled to begin preliminary work this week on the 2014 Audit of the town’s budget and finance situation.

“The complete review for the audit will be done in March, after 2014 is closed out,” he concluded.

The town received three replies from a “request for proposals” for security services at private functions at the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center in 2015. Harrington wrote that one of the proposals will be selected this week, and contract negotiations with the selected firm will follow.

Police Chief Gene Schilling and Lt. Chris Wurtsmith attended what Harrington termed “an excellent training on marijuana” earlier in January, and Wurtsmith will be writing up a report on the training that Harrington said should be available for review this week. Harrington noted that the training was “attended by law enforcement from all over the world.”

Harrington also reported that he and Public Works Director Larry Ballenger met with staff from the City of Glenwood Springs and Garfield County last week, to study up on a draft Access Control Plan being put together by the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA) to govern the agency in dealing with requests for access points along the Rio Grand Trail. An overview of the access control plan were scheduled to be presented to the board of trustees this week.

FRIDAY, Jan. 16: At 4:31 p.m. a local woman contacted police about a vehicleidentification-number inspection. The woman was subsequently arrested and taken to the Garfield County Jail on an outstanding warrant issued by the courts.

FRIDAY, Jan. 16: At 6:08 p.m. police responded to an accident in the 200 block of Highway 133, from which one of the vehicles had to be towed due to damages.

SATURDAY, Jan. 17: At 5:10 p.m. local police assisted the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers in contacting and arresting a local man on charges of poaching. The man was turned over to the wildlife department.

MONDAY, Jan. 19: At 12:54 p.m. officers took a report of damage to a vehicle tire.

TUESDAY, Jan. 20: At 2:33 p.m. a juvenile was arrested on charges of third-degree assault, abduction, obstruction of phone service and domestic violence at a Carbondale address. No further information was available from police due to the age of the suspect.

THURSDAY, Jan. 22: At 10:28 a.m. police took a report of a shattered glass panel at 225 Main St. The incident is under investigation.

Police put down injured mountain lion

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Carbondale police shot and killed a diseased mountain lion on Jan. 24, after the animal had been spotted lying by the Crystal River under the north bridge along North Bridge Drive in the River Valley Ranch subdivision.

No one other than the lion was hurt in the incident, which occurred at 2:40 p.m.

According to a statement from Carbondale Police Chief Gene Schilling, the lion was “a very sick cat” and was not able to move under its own power.

“It was a tom cat about 1-2 years old,” said the statement from the chief. “It had mange and was very malnourished. The cat had sores all over its body.”

The statement reported that the cat did not move even though police officers were standing on the bridge “only 15 feet away” from the lion’s location.

“There was a possibility that the cat had been hit by a vehicle,” the police statement continued, “however, that was not the contributing factor of its condition.”

Police contacted the Colorado Parks & Wildlife division, and were instructed to shoot the animal and put it out of its misery.

Police reported that wildlife officials felt that “there was no concern that the cat would infect humans or other animals.”

Two witnesses to the incident, who wished not to be identified, said they were out walking when they spotted police cars on the bridge and stopped to check it out.

“He wasn’t moving, but he was alive,” one

witness told The Sopris Sun. “We kind of figured maybe he had gotten hit by a car and gone down there to die. He was a beautiful animal and he was scary, because he was very big.”

Another witness said the cat’s head was “the size of a dinner plate.”

A search of the Internet for “mange” and “mountain lions” turned up a report on the “Urban Carnivores” website about a “mange epizootic” (the wildlife equivalent of an epidemic) that decimated the population of bobcats in the Santa Monica Mountains of Southern California starting in 2002.

Among the concerns expressed in the article were indications that a type of rat poison was found in many bobcats that died of severe mange, although the report indicated a lack of certainty about the link between the poison and the illness suffered by the cats.

The article also expressed concern that the disease could spread from the infected bobcat population to the region’s population of mountain lions.

The article also noted that, prior to 2002, “notoedric mange” or mange specific to big cats, had rarely been reported and “was considered a typically benign disease for wild cats.”

At the local Parks and Wildlife office in Glenwood Springs, administrative assistant Karla Ferguson said that the wildlife officer who handled the case, Craig Wescoatt, reported that the animal was infested with parasites, which may have lead to its severe malnourishment.

No tests were conducted on the animal, and it’s corpse had been destroyed by Tuesday, Ferguson said.

Dieter Martini 1960-2015 Dieter Martini passed on to his next adventure on Jan. 13, 2015 after a long illness.

He was born in Fogarasch, Romania on Jan. 31, 1960 to Karl and Katharina (Kloess) Martini. He had many fond memories of his childhood summers in his mother's village and was proud of his Transylvania Saxon heritage. In 1974 the family moved to Munich, Germany.

While attending university, Dieter said '”they left the lab door open one day and this rat escaped.” He came to the United States in 1982 with the intention of traveling on to Central America. However, he stayed in Northern California where he created a life for himself living off-grid in a tipi with his garden and wild land. He also became a certified massage therapist and hypnotherapist with a practice in Garberville, Calif. His son, Soren Winter, was born there in 1988. In 1993 he moved to Carbondale to be closer to his son and learned the carpentry trade. He was a skilled, self-employed carpenter working around the valley. His work schedule created the time to pursue other interests such as skiing, backpacking, traveling, gardening and long conversations with strangers on the street.

He also served on the Carbondale Board of Adjustments and Tree Board.

In 1996 he met Kathleen Weber through a mutual friend. Their first date was on skis and they quickly shared a bond over a love of the mountains and outdoor activities.

They married in October 1997 in Carbon-

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Martini of Carbondale; son Soren Winter of Taos, N.M.; parents Karl and Katharina Martini of Karlsfeld, Germany; and sister Erika (Thomas) Honka of Munich, Germany.

What’s next, a motorist driving his vehicle the wrong direction in the new Highway 133 roundabout? We wouldn’t doubt it, after a Sopris Sun roving reporter witnessed the following dangerous maneuver last week. He was driving north on Highway 133 at about the Sopris Shopping Center, when the white SUV in front of him pulled into the center lane (aka “the suicide lane”) and proceeded to pass three vehicles in front of him, eventually swerving back into the north bound lane and turning east on Village Road. The reporter was pretty sure the center lane is reserved for left turns, but he asked police chief Gene Schilling just to make sure. Schilling said, “No, it is not legal to use it as a passing lane … ” although “It is OK to pass cars that may be stopped or going slow and then turn left.” So there you go, folks.

Consider yourselves warned.

Rotary announces grants The morning Rotary Club of Carbondale has announced its community grant recipients for 2014-15. This year, the club decided to select four local non-profit organizations to receive larger grants, rather than awarding several smaller grants, according to a press release. The recipients are: Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment youth radio program, Home Care and Hospice of the Valley, The Sopris Sun newspaper, and KDNK Community Radio.

Each of these organizations will receive an

initial grant of $4,000, and will receive additional funding from the club’s major fundraiser of the year, the 2015 Happening dinner/dance, on June 20. Ticket information for the Happening will soon be posted at www.rotarycarbondale.org.

Carbondale fire fighters recently received a rare opportunity: the chance to set a house on fire and then practice putting out the flames. The exercise was possible because the house sits on a site near River Valley Ranch that Ross Montessori School will use to build a new campus. Fire chief Ron Leach told The Sopris Sun the department did not burn the house to the ground, but rather set a number of small fires inside the building so fire-fighters could get the chance to enter a burning building and extinguish a blaze while utilizing their self-contained breathing apparatus and charged hose lines. “We were able to set our ladders up … cut holes in the roof … break windows … force open doors and basically tear the heck out of the place,” Leach said. About 25 fire fighters took part over a period of three days in the past two weeks. “It's been many years since we were given an opportunity such as this to work with a real structure with real fire.” On a related note, on Jan. 21 at about 6 p.m., while fire fighters were practicing on the house, they responded to a double-wide fire in the mobile home park behind the Red Rock Diner. Local hemp proponents keep eyes on the prize

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Local advocates for creating a hemp industry in Colorado are actively pursuing their goal, including the creation of a year-long schedule of activities for local supporters throughout 2015, and plans to support a bill introduced in the U.S. Senate on Jan. 8 that would legalize the cultivation of hemp for farmers across the country.

Hemp, the non-intoxicating cousin to the marijuana plant, was legalized by Amendment 64 to the Colorado Constitution, which was passed by voters statewide in 2012, and state bureaucrats have been working on a framework to enable cultivation and use of the plant ever since.

A total of 14 states around the U.S. have passed similar legislation, aimed at creating a legal outlook that hemp is distinct from marijuana and that its cultivation should be again permitted as part of the nation’s industrial output.

News organizations around the state have carried stories about the difficulties inherent in putting together a hemp industry, starting with a definitional division in the state’s regulations between hemp fields for research and development (R&D), and fields intended for commercial applications.

The Colorado Hemp Education Association, based in the Roaring Fork Valley, in its January newsletter urged members and supporters to contact the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) to prevent the state’s Industrial Hemp Advisory Committee from raising licensing fees for R&D plots.

“We don’t really care if they raise the fees for commercial hemp cultivation,” said Jackie Chenoweth, one of the leaders of the CHEA, said prior to a meeting of the committee on Jan. 23.

The letter-writing campaign was aimed at

keeping R&D registration fees at their initial, 2013 level — a $100 flat fee and $5 per acre, with a requirement that the R&D plot be no larger than 10 acres — compared to the $200 flat fee, and $1 per-acre supplemental fee, for commercial hemp operations.

The committee on Jan. 23 was scheduled to consider, among other things, a fee increase that requires landowners to pay $500 for either a commercial operation or an R&D plot, a development that hemp advocates say would discourage farmers from getting involved with hemp cultivation.

Duane Sinning of the Department of Agriculture said the meeting was a hearing to gather public comment, and that no decisions were made.

He said the advisory committee will consider the information gathered and, at the Feb. 11 meeting of the Agriculture Commission, will present the findings and any recommendation they come up with.

Currently, state and federal laws concerning hemp cultivation and processing define hemp as a variant of the cannabis plant that contains no more than .3 percent, or three-tenths of a percent of the chemical “delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol” or THC, which is the active ingredient in marijuana that gets people high.

That level of THC, according to the CDA, is the accepted level in countries that allow hemp cultivation, such as Canada.

DEA has trouble Cultivation of hemp is illegal under U.S. federal law, primarily because federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents have difficulty telling hemp from marijuana in the field, but legal under the laws of Colorado and other states that recently have passed laws legalizing hemp as an industrial plant.

And last year, the Agriculture Act of 2014,

known as the Farm Bill, contained a provision that authorized hemp cultivation “for purposed of research conducted under an agricultural pilot program or other agricultural or academic research,” as long as hemp cultivation is legal under the laws of the relevant state government.

The state agriculture department’s website indicates that there currently are 131 registrants for hemp cultivation; 46 are commercial enterprises, 67 are categorized as R&D, and 18 hold both commercial and R&D registrations, according to the CDA website.

Larimer County on the Front Range is said to have the most commercial registrations (21), followed by Delta County on the Western Slope (13) and Boulder County (12.)

Boulder County has the highest number of R&D registrations (25), followed by Larimer (20) and Delta (14), according to the website, which adds that 39 of the state’s 64 counties contain registered hemp fields.

Registrants have informed the CDA that they are planning a multiplicity of uses for their hemp once it is harvested and processed, including such categories as clothing, cleaning supplies, “hempcrete” for building, spun insulation, paper fiber, hemp coffee, edible oils, dietary supplements, sprouts, seed for sale and replanting, and CBD extraction for medicinal purposes.

Locally Roaring Fork Valley residents Sue Gray (who also is a member of the board of directors for The Sopris Sun) and Jackie Chenoweth last year started the CHEA after meetings in Glenwood Springs and Carbondale convinced them and others that there is a good deal of interest in hemp cultivation in this region.

Gray told The Sopris Sun this week that the organization has a steering committee of eight people who hail from throughout the

Roaring Fork Valley, and an e-mail list of approximately 80 members.

Right now, she said, “We’re in an information gathering mode. We’re educating ourselves, so we can educate others.”

She said the group’s website (coloradohemped.org) has attracted interest from area farmers, as well as from a California-based medicinal-hemp pharmaceutical firm that is hoping to buy CBD hemp from Colorado farmers.

Currently, Gray said, the firm must buy its hemp products from sources outside the U.S. A key problem, Gray said, has been how to obtain hemp seeds for Colorado farmers to use in planting crops.

Under federal law, hemp seeds are classified under Schedule I in the DEA’s categories of drugs, meaning hemp seeds are considered drugs as potent and dangerous as heroin, despite hemp’s lack of psychotropic effects on humans.

And even if seeds can be obtained and planted, Gray continued, unprocessed hemp cannot be shipped out of Colorado, again due to federal laws.

She said the CHEA has heard from some entrepreneurs interested in starting up processing plants in Colorado, but so far there has been no activity to follow up on that interest.

“Everything's kind of up in the air right now,” Gray said of the CHEA’s activities.

The CHEA newsletter, sent out earlier in January, outlines a number of activities, including participation in hemp-related conferences and other events, showing films about hemp and its applications, entering a hemp float in the Fourth of July parade in Carbondale, and possibly planting a hemp plot in the summer with harvest planned in the fall.

Gray said the CHEA also may send emissaries to Canada, where hemp cultivation and processing is legal, to check out the state of the industry there.

Cirque d’Sopris celebrates the Chinese New Year Sopris Sun Staff Report The CCAH Cirque d’Sopris celebrates the Chinese New Year this time around with design, daring and dance.

The year 2015 is The Year of the Sheep.

The sheep signifies artistry, whimsy and loyalty and there will be all of that and more in this year’s show.

Cirque d’Sopris was inspired by the adult Green Is the New Black Fashion Extravaganza and attracts participation from youth throughout the Roaring Fork Valley and Paonia.

This year’s show is directed by Marty Durlin, and features Rising Crane Martial Arts students, Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities fashion design students, the Enrichment Wednesdays Duck Tape class, and talented students from Foxy Moron’s Paonia classes.

Chloe Brand is one student who started out in Cirque d’Sopris several years ago. She was inspired by Rochelle Norwood’s sewing classes and the CCAH show. Today she is a senior at Roaring Fork High School. She now walks the runway for the adult show, but still maintains a hand in Cirque.

“Sewing and design are what I want to go to college for and spend my life doing. This show is a huge opportunity for me to learn, gain experience and build my portfolio,” Brand said.

Added CCAH Director Amy Kimberly, “The show is a good way to support the young designers of our community. Some day they may be the stars of Project Runway or NY Fashion Week.”

CCAH’s Deborah Colley added, “This youth show is more than just a performance.

It is an opportunity for the creative youth community to connect, collaborate and inspire each other. Between creating costumes, masks and fashion lines, they also have to work together and problem solve to create choreography and acts. That takes commitment, time, focus, and teamwork, which all play an important role in basic life skills and character development.”

The utility-related fees, according to Zentmyer and CLEER Program Director Erica Sparhawk, will require work with the utility companies serving Carbondale consumers — Xcel Energy and the Holy Cross Energy cooperative, as well as the telephone and cable companies.

The talks with utility companies, Sparhawk predicted, will “take some time� and probably will be conducted in conjunction with the town attorney’s office.

According to a June 2014 update on the town’s energy-related goals, put together

by CLEER and CORE staff at the request of Carbondale’s trustees, the town’s goals have been modified from the initial list put together in 2006.

Some of the goals outlined in 2006 have been met, including: • The installation of solar panels on town facilities; • The inauguration of an unprecedented partnership with CLEER and CORE aimed at limiting Carbondale’s “carbon footprintâ€? with subsidized programs to encourage similar energy-saving solar installations and energy-conservation techniques among the residents and businesses here; • The creation of a “Technical and Financial Advisory Committeeâ€? or TFAC to guide the ongoing energy conservation programs and alternative-energy installations around town. • And a decision by the town’s trustees to contract for power from its two utilities that is generated by wind generators and other alternative technologies.

According to the CLEER/CORE update report, a total of 174 homes (out of 2,468 homes in all) have been retrofitted with energy-saving equipment, or had solar panels installed, a tally that the report states “leaves many more homes where assistance is needed to realize energy savings.�

The report offers details about the current energy use in town, and indicates that the largest amount of energy savings have come through town-owned buildings and facilities (58 percent of the savings to date), versus homes (25 percent) and commer-

cial businesses (16.2 percent).

The CLEER/CORE report indicates that energy use in Carbondale as a whole (built environment only) has diminished slightly since 2009, the year the town began working with the two nonprofit energy-conservation groups.

It remains just above 450 million kBTUs of energy consumed, on a graph supplied

by CLEER, which translates roughly to 45,000 metric tons of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere, according to CLEER’s Sparhawk.

Sparhawk told The Sopris Sun on Monday that, from 2009 through 2013, the town reduced its overall energy consumption by roughly 2 percent, or 9.7 million kBTUs. In that time, Sparhawk added, energy use in town owned buildings dropped by 13 percent, and energy consumption in the Carbondale public schools was reduced by 15 percent, thanks to energy-conservation programs initiated by CORE and CLEER. Another graph in the energy update predicts that, left unchecked as Carbondale’s population grows an estimated 1.4 percent per year (based on growth over the last decade), the town’s CO2 emissions are likely to increase to 52,000 metric tons by the year 2020.

But 2020 is Carbondale’s target year for reducing energy use by 20 percent, and to cut the town’s CO2 emissions by a similar percentage, to approximately 35,000 metric tons.

According to CLEER and CORE, the town’s two utilities “are on track to have 30 percent of the electricity they provide supplied from renewable sources by 2020.�

The two agencies calculated that this means the town would be keeping 8,000 metric tons of CO2 out of the atmosphere based on the electricity delivered by the utilities, which is projected to be “a major component in helping Carbondale achieve its targets.�

Sparhawk said the staffs at CORE and CLEER will be working on Carbondale’s plan in the coming months, and may be ready for a follow-up presentation to the trustees by summer or fall.

The town’s two utilities “are on track to have 30 percent of the electricity they provide supplied from renewable sources by 2020.�

Handouts harm – do not help — local wildlife Sopris Sun Staff Report Winter is here and that means animals will have to search a little harder for food. Colorado Parks and Wildlife wants to remind people that the best way to help hungry animals is to let them find their next meal on their own.

“People may mean well, but those who feed deer do more harm than good,” said Scott Murdoch, a Colorado Parks and Wildlife officer in Conifer. A law passed in 1992 makes it illegal to feed big game animals. This includes deer, elk, pronghorn, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, mountain lions and bears. Feeding wildlife is bad for the animals and dangerous for people, for a number of different reasons.

In the wild, deer and elk naturally spread out when grazing or browsing for food. Artificial feeding encourages them to crowd together making it easier to spread disease throughout a herd. Also, artificial concentrations of deer in neighborhoods results in increased vehicle collisions and conflicts with dogs harassing deer.

Feeding wildlife can not only harm wildlife such as deer and elk, it can also attract predators such as mountain lions to rural neighborhoods.

and large gatherings of deer can attract lions into neighborhoods, putting people, livestock and pets at risk. The mountain lions are also then put in danger because it may become necessary to kill them if they become a threat to human health and safety.

“Every winter, officers deal with numerous pets and livestock that get killed by mountain lions because homeowners are feeding deer; deer do just fine without the public’s help,” said Murdoch.

Wild animals have complex digestive systems and their natural diet is difficult to duplicate. Food from human sources can also lead to malnutrition, a disruption in natural migration patterns and death.

Carbondaler explains town’s attraction; plans to stay (Editor’s note: This is part of a series that explores how folks came to live in Carbondale).

By David Troxel There are some forces of attraction that can’t be resisted. Just ask Conor Johnson.

Johnson grew up in Palisade and Grand Junction, and was 10 in the early 1990s when he first visited the Carbondale area with his family. He remembers attending a cousin’s wedding in Redstone and having breakfast at the Village Smithy. At the time, it seemed like a pretty cool place.

When he was 15, Johnson’s family moved to Glenwood Springs, where he finished high school while being increasingly drawn to spend time in Carbondale. He had connected with the growing music scene here, playing music and attending shows with friends. Also during those years, Johnson became aware of an “explosion of culture” as Carbondale became, in his view, “a collective of people helping each other out, becoming a hub for community and culture.” Finally realizing that its pull on him had become too strong to ignore, Johnson fixed on a plan to make the leap.

“It just kept pulling me that way until I thought, ‘well, I spend so much time there anyway, I might as well just manifest a place.’” A few weeks later something opened up. “I just knew that it was my kind of place,” he told The Sopris Sun.

Manifestation The idea of manifestation filters through much of Johnson’s description of his relationship with Carbondale and its people.

Another concept that appears regularly in conversation with him is inspiration, which he says he has found in a diverse local spiritual community, and credits for his willingness to “keep persevering, do what I

Johnson resisted advice to attend college straight out of high school, instead taking time to explore his interests and talents while also “going inward” to meditate deeply on his calling. This comprehensive approach to identifying a life course led him after several years to obtain an associate degree in graphic arts from Colorado Mountain College, where he combined his academic training with the meditative insights he had gained to create a “vibrational, energetic” style of graphic design that became the signature feature of his company,

ity to “be a medium for different energies. A lot of times I don’t know what’s going to happen, what kind of energy is going to come through. So that boosted my creativity on a lot of levels.”

Today, at 33, Johnson has found a groove in Carbondale that he believes reflects the typical experience of his generation here. With a resume that includes graphic art and web design, gigging as a DJ and instrumental performer under the name “Sheelus” (from the Irish Gaelic for “music”), and providing home care and support for local elders, Johnson balances his passions with unexpected opportunities

to contribute to and draw sustenance from a vibrant Carbondale social landscape. He describes himself as one of many people who “have their own little niches that they get into where they really thrive, so they keep that going.”

For instance, Johnson points to the growing need for home care and support of the valley’s aging population as the unanticipated source of his strongest current potential to earn a stable income in Carbondale. While maintaining a strong passion for his art and music, he expresses a “deep satisfaction” in his work with community elders, a job that came looking for him instead of the other way around. “I was introduced to caretaking by a friend in the field who was overwhelmed with work, and he thought that this kind of work would be right for me,” he said.

But does he worry that the growing demands of caregiving will interfere with his other interests? On the contrary, Johnson expresses appreciation for the diversity of his callings and his Carbondale connections that have encouraged them, while also hoping to see more networks develop between the diverse local demographic groups “to help us all flourish even more than we do now.” Asked if living in Carbondale is ever a struggle, he replies enthusiastically “No! I feel very grounded here. Being so involved with the community and the people in it, it would really be harder to leave than it is to stay.”

SNOW REMOVAL POLICY As we begin our annual snow removal efforts, the Town of Basalt asks for cooperation from residents of the Town in the following areas:

• RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS - All snow from private property or adjacent sidewalks, should be stored on private property. Residents are responsible for clearing snow along sidewalks and away from mailboxes and fire hydrants.

• PRIVATE SNOW PLOWING - Placing, dumping or pushing of snow onto city streets or right-of-ways from adjacent properties is prohibited.

• STREET PARKING - Cars parked illegally may be towed.

• SAFETY AROUND PLOWS - Please slow down and use caution. Keep back a minimum of 50 feet.

• CHILD SAFETY - Please ensure that children refrain from playing on, in and around snow mounds.

Sopris Sun Staff Report  A duo of air-quality specialists with GarďŹ eld County recently told the Carbondale Board of Trustees that the town has little to worry about regarding air quality, at least as far as the county’s air quality monitoring program is concerned.

Morgan Hill and Anna Triebel, environmental health specialists with the county health department, told the trustees at a meeting on Jan. 13 that the county has the most extensive air quality-monitoring  program of all the rural counties in Colorado.

The goal of the monitoring program according to Morgan and a Powerpoint presentation she submitted at the meeting, is to:

According to Morgan, the monitors countywide in 2013 showed no violations of national ambient air quality standards, though she referred to periodic “exceedences� or spikes on the graphs used to outline the monitoring data.

The only item of concern for Carbondale, Morgan said, is in spikes in the readings for what she termed “unknown compounds� that appear to match a substance known as “acetonitrile.�

But, she said, that substance is used in making the ďŹ ltering media that is utilized in the monitoring equipment, so its appearance in the readouts is possibly due to contamination in the monitoring process itself.
