Ducks lining up; housing vision being created

By Amy Kimberly How did I end up leading housing forums in Garfield County? Traditionally, art councils work on bringing arts and education to their communities, but today the arts are taking a far greater role in planning, design and discussions around quality of life and future vision.

The Colorado Office of Economic Development believes this integration is important and invests in communities that operate with these partnerships. Artspace, a national non-profit organization, has believed this since 1987, and is deeply involved in areas of affordability, live/work and multi-use developments around the country; the National Endowment on the Arts has invested millions of dollars in communities working together with artists in “creative placemaking.”

These days it is important for all sectors to come together and get creative to solve problems. Housing is a huge problem in the Roaring Fork Valley and that problem will not go away until communities take action to help the situation.

What does that mean?

The first step is communication. A group of organizations are banding together to create the first step in communication by hosting a housing forum on Feb. 3. The goal of this gathering is to get the conversation moving. Hopefully that movement will translate into problem solving and opportunity.

My favorite line these days is, “If you have a vision, you can make it happen.”

Even if the original vision doesn’t play out as imagined, the journey towards fruition of the plan usually takes one down a very valuable road. That is why we cannot be complacent on the housing issue. Some folks think that it is already too late for us in the valley. Real estate is expensive, land is scarce and settling here is competitive, but I believe

we have opportunity. There are many pieces of land, privately owned, that will develop.

How development is done is changing.

Sustainability, community need, shared spaces, live/work and garden space are important. These things, and making them attainable, are possible, but it will take creativity, grit, perseverance and partnerships.

If we can come up with a 21st century vision for some of this land, we may be able to keep our community diverse. We may be able to provide teachers with options, young folks with starter spaces and seniors with more housing options. Our Latino community is part of the fabric of our life, and integration and opportunity are important aspects of this vision as well.

So, how do we get there? Luckily, we do not have to reinvent the wheel. Many communities have all ready gone there. Artspace has laid out the core values that make projects like this viable and I am just going to borrow from them: Wealth building: Generally-speaking, a for-profit developer will structure deals and manage a project to maximize its capacity to extract value from a community — through fees, rents and ultimately sale. Attaining long-term affordability by leaving dollars in a project — through deferred fees, capital reinvestment, creating community spaces etc. — creates wealth for the community, and can make money for the developer, though at a slower pace.

Social density: A developer motivated by profit will think of “density” as the opportunity to squeeze the most rentable units possible into a limited space. Artspace thinks of density as the opportunity to create dynamic social exchange. They prioritize non-revenue generating spaces like community rooms, stretch living space to double as studios, and turn hallways into well-lit galleries. While these enhancements limit rental income, they help build better communities.

OPINION

As long as it takes: This is the “slow money” part that makes it all possible. These kinds of projects require a deep investment of organizational resources and take three to five years, and sometimes longer, to complete. While this may be longer than a forprofit equivalent, it is balanced by decades of impact after opening.

Sustained commitment to artists: We have all learned that the presence of artists can add value to a community. Some forprofit developers take advantage of this opportunity by introducing new spaces as “artist housing,” with the understanding that those spaces can be flipped to more valuable use as a neighborhood gentrifies.

Aspiring to create improved livability, without gentrification, ensures that our buildings remain permanently affordable to the artists and arts organizations of a community.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, the Boettcher Foundation, Artspace, and Colorado Creative Industries announced a housing initiative in late July to participate in six projects throughout the state focused on affordable housing, live/work, multi-use and reuse spaces. They are working in the southwest right now, but our region will be coming up in 2017. It is a competitive process through DOLA (the Colorado Department of Labor Affairs) but we have a chance — if we have the vision.

Artspace is visiting Carbondale as I write this. We are working with Colorado Creative Industries so our relationship is established and our need is great. Now it’s your turn. Come out and be part of something great!

The first housing forum will cover from Glenwood Springs to El Jebel, and will be at the Third Street Center from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 3.

Carbondale trustees in the dark on lighting issues?

By David Johnson I just read about the Carbondale Trustees latest decision regarding lighting and LEDs, and specifically the new Faith Lutheran Church sign on Highway133.

I have lived right next to that location for 15 years, and since the new sign went up (which is visible from my back door window), it hasn’t bothered me one bit — in spite of the fact that my (non)religious beliefs can best be described as atheist or deist.

I think it’s great that the sign emits a tiny bit more light at the intersection of Eighth Street and Highway 133 a little further down since — like many intersections in this town — it is very dark and dangerous and I have repeatedly not seen pedestrians after dark when turning onto Eighth Street until my car almost hits them.

It’s obvious that no one from Public Works has examined how dark that inter-

section is — or countless other intersections in a town that is excessively dark and dangerous. Since town trustees seem to think it’s OK to put bike racks literally on Main Street in the town’s supposed commercial core — and are always encouraging bike and pedestrian traffic (which is great, but put the racks on the sidewalk so cars can park and businesses can pay your bills) — then why in the heck don’t town trustees make the town streets and intersections safer for bikers and pedestrians?

OPINION

Face first I tripped and went down face first (completely sober) at a corner of Sopris Park last summer walking home from Main Street because it’s completely dark. I wasn’t seriously hurt. Some people in some places think about lawsuits when things like that happen. I don’t, I just get pissed off at the

idiots in charge who should be living up to their supposed ideals, or at least making Public Works check street lights every now and then to make sure they’re working. When is the last time anyone did that in this town?

The town has put the bike path on both sides of Highway 133 and that’s a great amenity. But it has increased pedestrian and bicyclist hazards (and probably the town’s liability) immensely by putting up zero signage along it — especially with traffic speeds even greater from the roundabout. Cars exiting right onto the highway look left, not at the bicyclist potentially flying into them from the right.

Arn Menconi eyeing Senate as a Green candidate Seeking party’s nomination

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer For what appears to be the first time since the late U.S. Congressman Mike Strang (R-Colo.) was elected to serve a single term, back in 1984, Carbondale is home to a candidate for national office — this time in the person of former Eagle County Commissioner Arn Menconi.

Menconi, 56 and divorced, moved to Carbondale last year to be close to his two sons as they attend school here. He recently declared that he plans on challenging incumbent Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) in November as a candidate for the Green Party.

An official with the Colorado Green Party confirmed this week that Menconi is in the running for the party’s Senate nomination, and that he is so far the only candidate seeking to run in that capacity.

Bennet, who was superintendent of the Denver public schools before being thrust into national political office, was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009 to fill out the term of former Colorado Democrat Sen. Ken Salazar, when Salazar was named to serve as Obama’s secretary of the interior.

Bennet then was elected to the seat in 2010, narrowly winning a hotly contested race with GOP challenger Ken Buck.

This year will see Bennet’s second bid for re-election.

But Menconi feels Bennet has not done an adequate job representing Colorado and the nation’s interests, and that a new voice is needed to press such concerns as global warming, income inequality, social justice and other hot topics in today’s political climate.

“They’re not fighting for us,” Menconi said of Bennet and other Colorado representatives, including Cory Gardner, a Republican who ousted former Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Udall in 2014.

He said his mission is to fight for “climate justice, economic justice and to end the endless wars,” a reference to this country’s involvement in wars in the Middle East for the past 15 years.

“They called and said, ‘Either he goes or we do,’”Menconi said, with the result that he found himself out of a job.

“We’re run by a global corporate mafia,” Menconi said about his views. “But a ‘mafia’ implies that they’re breaking the law. They’ve written the laws themselves.”

Menconi, who refers to himself as an “activist journalist” and maintains an active online presence through a website, blogs, YouTube and other outlets, said he was a young Republican in high school and college (he holds an undergraduate degree in communication from DePaul University in Chicago, where he is from, as well as an MBA from the University of Denver).

He first came to Colorado in the 1970s as a teenager on a family ski trip, and moved here in 1991 to take a job selling properties in the Beaver Creek resort.

Conservative to progressive In between those segments of his life, Menconi spent a summer and fall studying in Europe, which contributed to what he called the “evolution” of his political views, away from conservative thinking toward his current status as a confirmed progressive. He now refers to himself as “a private citizen running for office” as opposed to a politician.

“We don’t have a democracy in the U.S.,” he said in the interview. “We have corporate totalitarianism,” in which corporations have used their wealth and power to control politics and the government, to the detriment of life for citizens in

the middle class and below.

“The thing I’m trying to do is expose the lies,” he emphasized, mentioning Bennet’s support for the Trans Pacific Partnership, an international trade deal that has drawn sharp criticism from the left, and for the Keystone Pipeline, as examples of how Bennet and other politicians are doing what corporations want at the expense of the needs of ordinary citizens.

Menconi did not categorically deny that he might be viewed by some as a “spoiler” in the election, taking votes away from Bennet and making it possible for a Republican to win the seat.

Instead, he said, voters must ask themselves, “Do they think the most important issues are being represented” in the campaign debates and ads?

He said he does not feel being tagged as a spoiler “is a realistic possibility at this stage.”

He said it is important to see how engaged the Colorado electorate is in the election process, and he hopes to do that by concentrating on big-picture issues similar to the ones being raised by presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, who is running as a Democrat but who historically has called himself a democratic socialist.

Asked if his candidacy is inspired by, or similar to that of Sanders, and capitalizes on voter anger and frustration with the political status quo in the U.S., Menconi responded simply, “Yes. Or, I hope so.

Otherwise I wouldn’t have jumped into this race.”

Asked to characterize himself, he remarked, “I’m somebody that is trying, as a citizen, to get our democracy back. I’m the kind of guy who stands up and makes noise.”

Ousted from his job Menconi, who served as Eagle County Commissioner from 2000 to 2008, also was the executive director for more than 20 years of a non-profit youth empowerment and leadership organization, initially called Snowboard Outreach Society but later renamed SOS Outreach after merging with another, similar organization.

Menconi said he earned about $115,000 a year at that job, and that the organization “worked with almost 50,000 kids” after it was founded in 1993.

He lost that job last year, he said during a lengthy interview with The Sopris Sun, after he went to Washington, D.C., and got arrested while protesting a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing about deeper U.S. military involvement in the Middle East. The protest, he said, was part of his growing concern over what he calls the “global corporate mafia” that he says is running the U.S. and, to some degree, much of the world.

Shoveling scofflaws face hey fines Sopris Sun Staff Report As snowfall and ice buildup continue to bedevil town work crews, Town Manager Jay Harrington issued a reminder that residents and businesses have some portion of responsibility for snow removal following a storm, as well.

In his weekly memo to town trustees and others, Harrington informed recipients of a municipal law that requires residents to remove snow and ice from sidewalks in front of their homes within 24 hours after a snowfall.

Businesses, Harrington reported, are required to do the same within four hours of a snowfall. Also, Harrington wrote in the memo, it is illegal for anyone to remove snow from private property and deposit it on “any public street, sidewalk, alley or other public property within the town.”

Harrington also noted the rather hefty fines that can be incurred by anyone ignoring these laws — $100 for the first offense, $250 for the second offense, and $500 for a third offense.

Regarding the town’s employees and their efforts to keep the streets and sidewalks snow free, Harrington wrote that Carbondale received eight inches of snow from the last storm and that “the crews have done a great job.”

A report about wetlands at the Carbondale Nature Park was completed and submitted to the town by Ryan Sparhawk, a graduate student at North Carolina University, who did the report for free as part of his study requirements. The study was intended to give the town data regarding a proposal to expand the existing small parking lot, and whether that could be done with disturbing the wetlands. Town staff is reviewing the report.

Harrington wrote that town staff soon will start work on a land-use change permit application to Garfield County for the Gus Darien Riding Arena, to make it a des-

ignated community gathering place, a designation that it has lacked. Harrington told The Sopris Sun the need for the change permit came up when the town applied for a Federal Mineral Lease District grant from Garfield County to build a planned roof over one of the grandstands at the arena, and officials noticed that the site’s use as a public rodeo arena was “non-conforming.” Harrington explained that the application is expected to receive an “administrative review,” meaning it will not need to go before the county planning and zoning commission or the Board of County Commissioners, but will be handled by the county’s planning staff.

The bid opening for the design-build roof structure over the grandstand is scheduled for Feb. 2 at 1 p.m. at Town Hall. Interested contractors may still submit a bid by calling 510-1214 and requesting a project manual and bid packet.

Carbondale’s town trustees and members of the P&Z met for a joint session on Jan. 20 to go over the Unified Development Code, as proposed, talking about such things as solar access, transitions between zone-district boundaries, alternative compliance with development standards, infill development, lighting, diversity of housing, level of discretion in making review decisions and affordable housing, according to Harrington’s memo. The two bodies will meet for their next joint review on Feb. 17.

The Carbondale Police Department has reopened its application process for one open patrol position, Harrington reported. The reason for reopening the process was not given.

The town is about to begin discussion about a utilities master plan, which is scheduled for a trustee work session in February.

From Jan. 14-21, Carbondale officers handled 185 calls for service.

During that period, officers investigated the following cases of note:

FRIDAy, Jan. 15: At 48 minutes past midnight, police officers contacted several people allegedly involved in a fight outside a bar. Investigation revealed there was a dispute between two parties involving the theft of a wallet, and one man was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and harassment.

FRIDAy, Jan. 15: At 10:53 p.m. police responded to a report of an intoxicated woman on Crystal Canon Drive. While questioning was underway, police reported that the woman hit an officer in the chest, and that she was then arrested on a charge of thirddegree assault, a misdemeanor.

SATURDAy, Jan. 16. At six minutes past midnight, police responded to a call about trespassing on Wheel Circle, where the homeowner said he had wielded a baseball bat to scare off two intruders who had been trying to steal a projector. Upon arrival at the home, the officers tried to find the suspects but were unable to do so.

SATURDAy, Jan. 16: At 3:18 a.m. police were called to a home on Garfield Avenue regarding a fight between two women. While the officers were arresting one woman who was intoxicated, she “became uncooperative and spit in the officer’s face,” according to a report. The spitter was arrested for third-degree assault, violating a restraining order, and harassment.

SUNDAy, Jan. 17: At 6:38 p.m. police investigated an accident involving an allegedly intoxicated male driving a pickup truck, and collided with a RFTA bus, at the intersection of Highway 133 and Dolores Way. The pickup driver was issued a summons into court for drunken and careless driving.

THURSDAy, Jan. 21: Police responded to a report of a fight at a bar. An investigation determined that no criminal act had occurred, but when one of the fighters asked for a ride home from a cop it was discovered that he was in violation of a restraining order and the man was arrested and jailed.

City Market continues shopping for P&Z okay

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer Carbondale’s citizen planners have put off making any recommendations regarding a proposed City Market grocery store project, known as the Carbondale Marketplace on the west side of Highway 133, following an initial public hearing on Jan. 21.

The matter was continued until the next meeting of the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z), on Feb 4.

At the Jan. 21 meeting, according to town planner Janet Buck, four members of the public were present for the public hearing.

The project owner, the Kroger/King Soopers grocery chain that owns Colorado’s City Market stores, plans to build a new, 58,000square-foot grocery store; roughly 7,000 square feet of connected retail spaces; and a

gas station kiosk with pumps, all on slightly less than eight acres northwest of the intersection of Main Street and Highway 133.

The development plan is contingent upon an agreement from the current owners to subdivide the larger, 23-acre parcel and to sell the 7.8-acre portion to Kroger/King Soopers.

Under the application before the P&Z, the 7.8-acre parcel is to be subdivided into five separate lots, two of which (lots 1 and 5, at the southern and northern end of the overall parcel) will not be developed under this plan.

Those two lots (roughly 14 acres), which still are owned by the limited liability corporation that proposed two earlier development projects on the site, are to be reserved for future uses, while lots 2, 3, and 4, which make up the central portion of the larger parcel, are to contain the development now

being proposed.

Buck said the P&Z discussion included questions about how would patrons get from one to the other without having to go onto Highway 133, if lots 1 and 5 are to be developed in the future.

Discussion also focused on a proposed “three-quarter movement intersection” at Highway 133 and Nieslanik Avenue, at the northern end of the Carbondale Marketplace site, which would preclude Marketplace patrons’ turning left to go northbound on the highway.

Buck said the applicant proposed a traffic light at that intersection, “but that would have required a median in the new center lane of the highway,” she reported. “It also would have required closing three or four driveways on the east side of (Highway) 133,” she con-

tinued, which would restrict public access to businesses across the highway from the Carbondale Marketplace.

In her memo to the P&Z about the Marketplace proposal, Buck noted that the Colorado Department of Transportation has suggested instead that a future roundabout be planned for at least one of the access drives into the Marketplace project, perhaps at the Industry Way intersection with Highway 133.

In general, Buck told The Sopris Sun in an e-mail, there has been little opposition to the proposed relocation of City Market from its current spot in the existing Crystal Village Plaza shopping center.

The 23-acre site for the proposed new grocery store once was owned by Colorado Rocky Mountain School, but the school sold it in 1999.

Eight candidates step up for Carbondale trustee election

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer A total of eight candidates have submitted petitions to run for three open seats on Carbondale’s Board of Trustees this spring, according to Town Clerk Cathy Derby.

Those eight, in alphabetical order, are Ben Bohmfalk, Michael Durant, Allyn Harvey (incumbent), Wayne Horak, John “Doc” Philip, Dan Richardson, Marty Silverstein and Patricia Warman.

The election is scheduled for April 5, and it is to be a mail-in ballot, meaning there will be

no polling places set in precincts around town as historically was the case on election day.

Instead, Derby will send out ballots to local qualified voters in mid-March, and those ballots must be back at Town Hall by the end of business on election day, at 7 p.m., in order to be counted.

In addition, Derby confirmed there will be a voting booth set up at Carbondale Town Hall, 511 Colorado Ave., on election day for voters who have not mailed in their ballots for whatever reason.

Derby also noted that she will have a bal-

lot box in her office starting on the day she sends out the ballots, as required by state law, for voters who wish to bring in their ballots in person.

Garfield County Clerk Jean Alberico will be leasing the county’s vote-counting machine to the town on election day to facilitate the process, Derby said, which will permit Derby to forego starting the ballot count up to 15 days prior to April 5, as is allowed under state law.

Starting the count early might have been necessary in order to calculate the election re-

sults early enough that evening to get them out to the voters and to area news outlets as quickly as possible, Derby remarked.

But, she said, “Using the machine is so much quicker” and makes early counting unnecessary.

The municipal election will feature three trustee seats up for election — Trustees Pam Zentmyer and John Hoffmann are stepping down due to term limits, while Harvey still has a term to go before stepping down and is running for reelection.

Alright! Congratulations to Greg and Kathy Feinsinger as they celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Feb. 5. They were married in Pocatello, Idaho in 1966.

Way to go Since late December, a group of concerned citizens that now goes by the name Carbondale Homeless Assistance has met every week to address how to help the town’s homeless population during these freezing winter months. According to CHA organizer Lynn Kirchner, the group now numbers 300 members and they have raised more than $500. Among the things CHA has accomplished: they have paid for ďŹ ve nights of emergency accommodations; purchased punch passes for showers at the recreation center; paid for phone time, laundry services and gasoline for those who have vehicles; obtained winter clothing and sleep-

ing bags; networked with parishes for their assistance; reached out to the homeless to find out what they need; gotten information from existing shelters including Feed My Sheep; and created dialogue about the town’s homeless situation. Carbondale Homeless Assistance has also set up accounts at Ragged Mountain Sports, the Back Door Consignment (#9111) and Miser’s Mercantile (B-152) to donate money or have items consigned to CHA accounts. The group is also looking for someone who knows how to repair a 1979 Dodge RV, assistance in moving the vehicle to a permanent parking area where there is the possibility of hooking up to electricity, and also for doctors and dentists to help with assessments or treatments. UN trip update The Rebekah Lodge of Carbondale has extended the deadline to apply for a trip to the United Nations later this year. Besides viewing the UN in action, students will attend a Broadway play, visit the Smithsonian Museum and White House, view the changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetery, and visit Niagara Falls and the Canadian Parliament. CRES makes tracks For the past two weeks, all 485 students at Crystal River Elementary School (K-4) took part in Nordic ski classes on their own private track on the Roaring Fork High School baseball field. Physical education instructor Marty Madsen, a Nordic skier himself, organized and taught the classes, and cut the trail with his 4-wheeler. “We had a parent, Todd Anderson, with his two girls, Sam and Maddie, ski on it over Christmas break,” Madsen told The Sopris Sun. “The trail was cut just enough for us to get out there, and the kids in our classes continued to ski on it to make it wider and faster.” Madsen added, “We are the only students allowed access to our own Nordic ski track since it is on the baseball field and we have the keys, so that makes it feel special to the kids knowing it’s all theirs.” Judging from the smiles on these thirdgraders faces, we could see that this was a fact.

The array of 1,242 solar panels will power 100 percent of the school’s electric usage on an annual basis, according to a press release. The public is invited to attend. Tipton says feds “over reached� on public lands Remarks during Rotary luncheon

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, a Republican who represents the 3rd District of Colorado, told an audience made up mainly of local business owners last week, “I’m not anti-rules and -regulation, but I believe we can bring some common sense to that.�

He then proceeded to describe his perception that the federal government has over-reached its authority with regard to making rules and regulations about private use of public lands, and that the government’s attitudes about the use of public lands and the water rights that go with those public lands are bad for business and bad for the United States.

He noted that he has worked on legislation to modify the Administrative Procedure Act of 1946 to prevent what he considers further federal overreach in its oversight of public lands and other matters.

Tipton, who was elected to the Colorado statehouse in 2008 and to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010, is a business owner himself, having established what he termed an “Indian potteryâ€? shop and store in Cortez prior to seeking elective ofďŹ ce.

He was in Carbondale on Jan. 21 as part of a swing through his district during the current Congressional recess, speaking at

the noontime meeting of the Mt. Sopris Rotary Club, and planned to spend a little time with his fellow Republicans on the GarďŹ eld County Board of County Commissioners later that same day.

At the Rotary Club luncheon at Mi Casita, Tipton was highly critical of federal land management policies, particularly of the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service, which he described as attempting to subvert private property rights, move water rights to federal control and other policy directions.

Tipton described himself as a champion of private-property rights over the rights of government, including a declaration that he is hard at work “protecting our water rightsâ€? on behalf of the state’s agricultural and skiing industries, by preventing a federal takeover of water rights that ow over public lands.

Offering criticism of President Barack Obama’s “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act� (popularly known as the ACA or Obamacare), Tipton asked his audience, “How effective has the ACA been for you,� eliciting chuckles of appreciation from some in the crowd.

Speaking of “private sector solutions� to the nation’s health-care crisis, he blamed high premiums and other rising costs under the ACA on the act itself.

But at least one attendee, Carbondale Trustee John Hoffmann, noted that he was pleased with the ACA and said it had offered an affordable solution to his personal healthinsurance problems.

Asked about his current thinking about the ongoing controversy over gas drilling in the Thompson Divide, Tipton said he has been working with the ofďŹ ces of U.S. Sens.

Michael Bennet and Cory Gardner, both of Colorado, on a lease-swap deal that would trade mineral leases held in the Thompson Divide for other leases in U.S. Forest Service lands elsewhere in the state. “I do understand the community concerns,� he said in acknowledgement of the efforts by Carbondale and other nearby communities to block drilling in the Thompson Divide. He indicated a desire to work out a swap that would result in drilling activities in Mesa and Delta counties, where he said the county commissioners are hoping for energy development.

Although at the Rotary gathering he did not address issues surrounding a plan by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to cancel or modify some leases in the Thompson Divide area, following a federal appeals board ruling that the leases were insufďŹ ciently vetted under the National Environmental Policy Act, Tipton did take the issue on in an opinion piece published in The Sopris Sun’s Jan. 21-27 edition.

In that piece, Tipton stated, “I ďŹ rmly believe (the BLM’s intention) represents yet another in a long line of abuses of private property rights by the federal government.â€?

He accused the BLM of having “succumbed to political pressure from environmental extremists,â€? although many supporters of the BLM move are local government ofďŹ -

cials, businessmen, ranchers and others who might not consider themselves “environmental extremists.�

In response to a question, Tipton was critical of the ability of the USFS to adequately care for and administer the land it already oversees in Colorado, and of a USFS request for $174 million in funds to purchase more land, although Tipton did not say exactly where that land is located.

He said he asked why the agency needed the money, and that “there wasn’t a satisfactory answer to that.� He offered no further explanation of the issue, but suggested he is hoping to get Congress “more involved� in oversight of numerous public lands issues, though he added, “We don’t want Congress micro-managing� the allocation of public resources.

During talk about recent devastation of Colorado’s high-country forests by the mountain pine beetle, an audience asked about whether he advocated investing more money and effort into slowing down global warming trends.

He answered that he favors an “all of the above� approach to the problem of limiting greenhouse-gas emissions, maintaining that the U.S. energy sector lacks the capability to power the nation using only such alternative sources as wind and solar. He also said he favors seeking ways to “incentivize� the private sector to come up with workable, sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels, the burning of which are widely believed to contribute to the warming trend of the planet.

Dear Editor: Did you know that some of the face scrubs and toothpastes you are using contain an environment-damaging product called microbeads? Microbeads are tiny plastic beads inside of most personal care products.

But why are they so bad for the earth, you ask?

Well, when you wash off a product with microbeads in it, those microbeads don’t just magically disappear. When you wash things down the drain, they go to the waste treatment facility. Most of the facility’s filters aren’t fine enough to catch these tiny villains. What’s worse is that when those microbeads reach the sewers they soak up most of the toxins around them and become even more poisonous than the water they are in. Think of it as a bunch of mini sponges in very toxic water.

They soak up a lot of the toxins and take them along to the ocean.

But what’s so bad about that? Well, those microbeads will eventually reach a body of water and chances are, some fish or other marine animal will end up eating those microbeads. Then the fish and marine life get sick, and might die. The fish who survive the original shock of microbeads become disoriented and confused, and become much more likely to be caught by a bird or human. This can make that bird or person very sick, and most sea birds that consume too many microbeads die. So everyone on the food chain, top or bottom, pays for microbeads.

What can you do about this problem?

Start off by making sure you stop buying products with the words polyethylene, microbeads, polyester or something containing plastic, or if you read the bottle/tube closely, you may notice this phrase or a phrase related to “Contains Microbeads,” or see the ingredient polyethylene. If you do have products with microbeads in them, and you really like that product or do not want to have your money go to waste, then the next step is to put a used dryer sheet in your sink and shower to strain the microbeads out of water.

The next step you can take is to feed the caught microbeads to mealworms. Their waste will create very effective compost for

your garden. Mealworms are baby beetles that can eat and digest microbeads. If you cannot find any mealworms, or if you do not want to buy them, then you can mail your caught microbeads to the Basalt Middle School Longhornbots, who have mealworms that will dispose of your microbeads. Guns are a concern Dear Editor: We were recently inspired by a novel we read in one of our classes. In the novel there were two characters shooting at a kid and his dog. We feel that the situation in the book wasn’t very safe. That made us want to speak up about gun control because the two characters that were shooting were using their guns inappropriately. We want our community to use guns safely and properly.

In America there have been many shootings that have affected many. As a kid living in the Roaring Fork Valley we feel that a safe community creates a great environment for kids to grow up in. We want the future kids living in the Roaring Fork Valley to live in a safe place. We want to make sure that it does not get out of hand.

From watching the news we have witnessed many shootings and we feel that many of them could have been prevented. For example, the Colorado Springs shooting could have been prevented by making sure we do in-depth background checks so someone who is not mentally stable or is planning on using it inappropriately can be stopped.

If you are in a situation where a gun is laying around, do not touch it, nor go near it, and call a trusted adult. Keep all guns in a concealed place in public and around children.

In conclusion we feel that by educating our peers we can prevent shootings and deaths by firearms. Many of you can help create a safer community for everyone’s kids to grow up in. To help the community you can inform everyone you know about what you learned from reading this article.

that last summer, just like they ignored my request to put in a stop sign at Eighth and Sopris to cut down on the ignorant jerks that y through this neighborhood at 35 mph with kids and pets everywhere. I was told, quote: “stop signs shouldn’t be used for speed control.â€? Really? Evidently, the Carbondale Police Department shouldn’t be used for speed control either, since they are usually nowhere to be seen when people are constantly speeding through residential neighborhoods in this town.

How can this town be low on revenue when the Police Department could be making a killing by writing tickets to all these people who have no respect?

Why are town trustees worrying about less lighting and saving the world by eliminating plastic bags at every business in town instead of making town employees — whose wages are paid by the sales taxes of those businesses — ensure that this is a safe place to walk, bike, drive, shop, visit and live?

I’m looking forward to the next election when the next batch of town trustee candidates can convince me and other voters that they have some actual common sense. And I hope  that when they take ofďŹ ce they can actually show some.    Sopris Ave. David Johnson lives at 778
