We are less and less able to predict weather cycles and resource availability, like water. So the need to be in close relationship to the land where we live, the weather cycles and how the soil, flora and fauna respond to them, and how to give and take with balance, honoring the carrying capacity and maintaining the fecundity of the ecosystem points to a return to a more intimate scale of food production.

What does this look like on a local foodsystem level? It maybe tracking down a CSA share to purchase (community supported agriculture or a small local grower who provides products on a regular basis to members), or figuring out how to commit 10 percent, or some greater percentage, of your food budget to local products. Or commit to starting a kitchen garden at whatever scale is doable for you. Or get involved with the school garden at your child’s school.

These suggestions may seem quaint, but the local economies that rebounded best after the 2008 crash are those that had a robust local food economy. In a time of no guarantees, what we can do (as Woody Tasch of Slow Money urges) is to steer energy and resources “toward enterprises that enhance the quality of life that preserve and restore fertility, biodiversity, and the health of bioregions and communities and the households that live in them.”

Dear Editor: I would like to reiterate that the issue of guns in the library is still under discussion by the library board. They have directed me to create a draft of a policy that we will discuss at the next meeting.

They are weighing our options. Those options are: 1. Prohibit ALL guns if we put up a check point with metal detectors and a security guard at each entry. This is extremely costly, would create an unwelcome intrusion and delay to entering the building, and would likely impact our ability to offer other services.

2. ALLOW concealed carry and PROHIBIT open carry under state law. State law does allow us to prohibit open carry while

allowing concealed carry.

3. ALLOW both concealed and open carry under state law. Colorado law allows for both concealed and open carry. Only concealed carry requires a permit.

I invite the public to our next board meeting on Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. in Carbondale.

I’ll be sure that this topic will be first on the agenda.

Recently, our principal announced her resignation. Heather Cremeans started at CRES in the fall of 2013. She came into our building with a smiling face and warm energy. That year, my daughter was starting first grade. The week prior to the first day of school, I was notified she had been moved into a different class from her original assigned homeroom. My daughter had friends in the class she had been primarily assigned and was understandably upset by the last minute switch. This change was the subject for the first conversation I ever had with Heather. She was gracious and polite while explaining the switch and generous with her limited time. I knew at that point that I appreciated and respected her as our new principal.

Fire district tight-lipped on master plan proposals Board discusses proposals Jan. 28

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent The leaders of the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District will meet on Jan. 28, in a public session, to decide which of four firms should be hired to write up the district’s 2015 master plan, which is intended to guide the district’s operations for the coming decade.

The meeting will feature on-site interviews with three of the four firms that submitted proposals in response to the district’s Nov. 26, 2014 request for proposals and bids. A fourth firm will be interviewed by telephone.

In interviews with The Sopris Sun leading up to the Jan. 28 meeting, however, district officials have declined to reveal how much the four firms are estimating their

work will cost. Officials have stated that the district has an obligation to protect any “proprietary information” contained in the bids, including the bottom-line, estimated overall price tag for the work.

The district has budgeted up to $90,000 in funds for the master planning process, according to fire board members.

Generally, the request for proposals (RFP) lays out a list of requirements for the bidding firms to follow, such as being “capable of working closely with the board of directors, staff and the Carbondale community” and being ready to offer “a strong public outreach and public involvement component” as part of the process.

Other requirements are to provide “a strong fiscal planning component,” as the district has struggled with financial problems for the past few years due to a slump in property-tax revenues blamed on the recent Great Recession that began in 2008.

Trustees noodle pot issues; the emergency passes

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent The Carbondale Board of Trustees on Tuesday avoided, rather than voting down, a proposed emergency ordinance that would have expanded the zone of separation required between recreational marijuana stores in town, as a way of preventing the “clustering” of such businesses in one neighborhood or part of town.

But the broader topic of cannabis stores still got a good deal of attention, as the trustees grappled with the ongoing puzzle of how to officially handle the relatively new industry and its impacts.

The emergency ordinance, proposed by Trustee Allyn Harvey, was in reaction to complaints from business and property owners in and near a multi-use commercial complex along Village Road on the north side of town.

The town has issued a total of eight licenses for recreational and medical outlets, cultivation facilities, a quality-control lab, and a “marijuana infused products” business in that neighborhood.

At present, there are 11 licensed marijuana-related businesses in town, with room for more under the town codes, and Harvey’s proposed ordinance was presented as a way of keeping future marijuana businesses from adding to the perceived troubles of the Village Road neighborhood.

The emergency ordinance, Harvey noted at Tuesday’s meeting, would have needed five votes (a quorum of four, plus one) to pass, and as the meeting started there were only five trustees present (Trustee Frosty Merriott arrived late).

But, as Harvey stated on Wednesday, the ordinance appeared doomed to fail because “the votes weren’t there” to get it passed.

Plus, Harvey said on Wednesday, “the urgency of the situation … dissipated” when Town Clerk Cathy Derby reported that the latest recreational marijuana busi-

The master plan is an outgrowth of a 2013 tax hike election, in which voters rejected the district’s request for additional tax revenues to overcome losses of revenues due to the recent national recession.

Among the reasons cited by voters, in what was widely viewed as a “no-confidence” vote on the district’s tax-hike justification and its policy priorities, was a disinclination to go along with an openended tax that could be levied in perpetuity, and an interest in greater transparency concerning how the district spends public funds and does its job.

Following the defeat of the tax hike, the district put together a Citizen Advisory Committee that met between March and August of 2014 and, among other recommendations, urged the fire board to update its 2004 master plan before returning to voters with any future tax-hike requests.

ness application, received this week, is for a location on Main Street, not in the Village Road neighborhood.

A motion by Trustee Pam Zentmyer to drop the proposed ordinance, seconded by Merriott, was passed, 5-1, with Trustee A.J. Hobbs dissenting.

Still, Harvey said hopefully on Wednesday, “the issue will continue. I think it’s important that we continue to look for ways to have marijuana, as an industry, fit into Carbondale and not necessarily impact one neighborhood more than others.”

Trustee John Hoffmann, who joined a majority on the board to pull the emergency ordinance from consideration, suggested there are other ways the town could prevent clusters of cannabis shops from being concentrated in certain parts of town.

One, he said, would be to reduce the required separation distance between marijuana businesses and schools, alcohol or drug treatment centers and other facilities — a set of requirements that has put many parts of town off-limits for such businesses.

“This is a major change, John, that you are proposing,” said Zentmyer, noting that the absence of Mayor Stacey Bernot [and Trustee Merriott, at that point] should preclude any consideration of that idea for the moment.

And, Zentmyer continued, given that the most recent application for a recreational sales permit is for a location in another part of town, perhaps there is not such an emergency after all.

Derby informed the trustees that complaints emanating from the Village Road neighborhood are more about the cultivation operations than about the stores, and the cultivation facilities are “having a tendency to converge on that area [Village Road].”

She and Town Manager Jay Harrington explained that town staff responds quickly to such complaints, and Derby noted “usu-

No one was injured, other than the car, police reported.

The incident happened at about 2 a.m., according to police, and was heard by several nearby residents, although police did not officially learn of the shooting until about 10:30 a.m., that morning.

“People heard the shots, but no one called us,” said Carbondale Police Chief Gene Schilling on Jan. 19.

He said the gun involved is believed to have been a large-caliber pistol, although he added that he was unsure whether there was one gun used, or more than one.

He also said police are unsure whether the assailant was on foot or in a vehicle, noting that snow fell that night and obscured whatever signs there might have

been left on the ground after the incident.

None of the shots hit any nearby homes, Schilling said, and the neighbors interviewed by police did not indicate they had been in fear of being shot.

The car, a dark colored sedan, had been parked at the spot four days earlier, according to information police got from its owner. The owner reportedly told the police that the car was in operational condition when he parked it.

“He gave us no ideas as to who might do it,” Schilling said of the interview with the car’s owner.

The last reported gunfire in town, Schilling said, happened about “six to eight years ago” along Barber Drive, when the accidental discharge of a .22 caliber weapon left one man dead. Schilling said the shooter, whose name he could not recall, was convicted in Ninth Judicial District court and sentenced to prison.

“It’s unusual,” Schilling said of the car shooting. “It’s just a weird thing that something like this would happen in town.”

The matter remains under investigation.

Vehicles unexpectedly gathering dust Sopris Sun Staff Report Ice melt and snow melt took up a good part of Town Manager Jay Harrington’s weekly memo to the board of trustees for the week of Jan. 12-16, as streets and trails crews dealt with the daily cycle of freeze and thaw, with an emphasis on thaw.

He reported that, as the streets crew worked to clear the snow from recent storms, “enough ice and snow melted from the roads [that] we were able to get the street sweeper out” and gather up dust instead of frozen water.

Perhaps signaling a hope for a continued January thaw, Harrington noted, “If the weather cooperates, we will continue cleaning streets.”

The town’s parks crew also was in ice-removal mode on the town’s system of trails, Harrington wrote. He advised the trustees that “before next winter we will need to install several smaller drywells on the sections of trails that lack drainage,” to eliminate the pooling of water during the days and the freezing of said pools into treacherous mini-rinks overnight.

But at the town’s official skating rinks, he reported, hockey classes for kids and drop-in hockey games for adults continue to be popular, both at the downtown family rink at Fourth and Main streets and at the Gus Darian Riding arena rink out on Catherine Store Road (County Road 100).

“Youth Hockey lessons are going well with a record participation of 25 kids signed up in the 6-9 year old session and 11 kids in the 10-14 year old session,” Harrington reported.

“Drop-in hockey is scheduled for the Gus Darien Ice Rink on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m.”

In addition, the adult Broomball League continues this week, with results posted on the website, www.quickscores.com/carbondalerec.

The recreation department offers skate rentals, and skate

sharpening services, and information on said services can be found at the website, www.carbondalerec.com.

Aside from the ice-oriented recreation, Harrington wrote that climbing lessons for kids are back in action, including the Spider Monkey climbing class for kids aged 4-6 years, which is full through February. Another class is scheduled to begin in March to provide room for those now on a wait-list, Harrington reported.

The town Recreation and Community Center is continuing its special January membership promotion, in which new members can sign up for either three months or six months, and get an extra month for free. Harrington reported that so far this month, 215 new members have signed up, compared to a total of 192 in the 2014 membership promotion.

On a completely different front, Harrington reported “a resurgence in the interest in retail marijuana related establishments” in the past week. He wrote that the town received three separate inquiries concerning “marijuana infused products” (or MIP) permits and one retail/recreational marijuana store application. A second new recreational store application was submitted but refused due to the limit of five such establishments in Carbondale. Harrington also reported that the existing qualitycontrol lab on Village Road is seeking permission to expand, and that the town’s sole MIP business may be relocating from its location on Village Road.

In other cannabis-related business, Harrington noted, the planning and zoning commission reviewed a special use permit application for a marijuana cultivation operation on North 12th St., along with concerns from neighbors about noise, odors and other possible impacts. The P&Z recommended approval of the application, which will be up to the board of trustees.

SaTURDay, Jan. 10: at 4:08 p.m. officers took a report from two local residents concerning an alleged incidence of fraud.

No further information was available.

SaTURDay, Jan. 10: at 11:31 p.m. officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by an 18-year-old girl on Main Street, and reportedly were able to smell pot smoke wafting from the vehicle. They ticketed the occupant for being a minor in possession of marijuana, and for using marijuana against state law.

SUNDay, Jan. 11: At 43 minutes after midnight a man was contacted by police at the Carbondale Post Office. When he refused to leave, he was arrested.

MONDay, Jan. 12: A 39-year-old local woman filed a report stating that she had lost her purse.

WEDNESDay, Jan. 14: At 1:30 p.m. officers were called to a store concerning damage to a self-checkout screen. On investigation, the officers learned the suspect was a developmentally challenged individual and no charges were filed, though an agreement for restitution to the store for damages was arranged.

WEDNESDay, Jan. 14: Police learned that an unknown person or persons took out one of the new LED streetlights at the intersection of Snowmass Drive and Main Street. A new streetlight has been ordered.

Herrington told The Sopris Sun last summer he first arrived to check out Carbondale in 1974 after a harrowing drive over Scofield Pass in his then-new Scout International. Although not yet retired, Herrington’s name is no doubt destined to be remembered in a fairly short line of predecessors: Dr. Tubbs, Dr. Harry Hendricks and Dr. Al Waskie.

Faith Lutheran Church purchased the Doctors Medical building at 1340 Highway 133.

The congregation plans on renovating the building during the coming years converting the waiting area and front offices into a sanctuary and renovating the back portion of the building into a Child Care Center to serve the needs of the Carbondale Community.

Faith Lutheran Church is the result of the recent merger of Messiah Lutheran Church in Aspen and Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Glenwood Springs. Faith Lutheran Church is being served by the Rev. Thomas Thierfelder Mdiv, Ordained pastor of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. The Child Care Center is under the direction of Mrs. Cindi Maynard.

Teen pot thieves await sentencing

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Three members of group of six suspected juvenile offenders, accused of breaking into a backyard marijuana greenhouse in Carbondale last summer, have been convicted of various crimes and await sentencing, according to a summary of the cases by Ninth Judicial District Attorney Sherry Caloia.

The names, ages and other identifying information about the suspects all are being withheld by authorities because the suspects all are juveniles.

The thefts of pot, from an in-town property on the south side of town, reportedly took place on four separate dates starting in July, 2014 and ending in mid-September, 2014.

Carbondale Police Chief Gene Schilling said last September that the arrests took place after surveillance cameras, installed after the second theft, allegedly revealed the identities of three teens, said to be between the ages of 14 and 17.

Three additional teens were arrested later last year in connection with the thefts — two in October and one a couple of weeks later.

Caloia, communicating by email, confirmed to the Sopris Sun last week that two of the teens arrested over the thefts were involved in one incident in which “nothing was taken.”

The two, she said, had no prior records of criminal behavior and were sentenced to “diversion,” a program administered by the Sherry Caloia Youth Zone organization, and inNinth Judicial District Attorney tended to keep first-time juvenile offenders from becoming entangled in the juvenile justice and detention system.

According to Caloia, another of the teenagers had only “minor involvement” in one of the actual thefts, and also was granted a diversionary sentence.

The three remaining juveniles, Caloia said, all pleaded guilty to theft and other charges and are to be sentenced at a later date.

In general, Caloia wrote, drug and alcohol monitoring and treatment “will most likely be required for all who were involved in the thefts,” and other conditions may be imposed on the three who have pleaded guilty.

In addition, she said, all of those involved in the actual thefts will be required to make restitution to the victim.

“Hopefully they will turn their lives around and learn from this event,” Caloia said of the juveniles.

She noted that, under juvenile law, all offenses carry a maximum sentence of two years of probation or a term in the Department of Youth Corrections.

Fines and out-of-home placement also are options open to juvenile justice officers, she wrote.

“Hopefully they will turn their lives around and learn from this event.”

1921-2015 Dick Veit passed away Jan. 12 in his present hometown of San Rafael, Calif.

Dick was born in Paris, France in 1921 to a French mother and American father. Moving to Connecticut in 1935, Dick eventually graduated from Princeton. He then volunteered for the US Navy Reserve where he served a total of 15 years and received his chief mate’s license. In 1962, Dick returned to school and received an architectural degree from Harvard. After time in the Virgin Islands, Dick moved to Carbondale in 1990 to be near his daughter and grandchildren.

He lived in Carbondale till 2009.

Dick is survived by daughter Alexandra Schwaller of Junction City, Oregon; son Dick Veit, Jr. of New York; grandchildren Monica and Emily Schwaller of Carbondale, Colo., and Darren and Brian Veit of Seattle, Wash.; and wife Jane Veit of San Rafael, Calif.

Dick will always be remembered for having a sharp intellect, amazing wit and a genuine respect for all people he met regardless of their walk in life.

Valley Visual hits 35; 60 artists respond Sopris Sun Staff Report Participating artists in the 35th annual Valley Visual Art Show have dropped off their artwork at the Launchpad, with an opening night reception slated for 6 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 23.

The Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities show features the work of 60 Roaring Fork Valley artists, working in oil, acrylic, watercolor, photography, mono prints, clay prints, multi-media, sculpture and more.

“This is one of the longest outstanding community art shows committed to featuring local artists,” said CCAH spokeswoman Deborah Colley. “Valley Visual began in 1980 as a venue for local artists to share their artwork with the public. The show still provides this opportunity, especially for artists new to the area and budding artists, but it has also become both a salute to the wide variety of artistic talents in our area and a time to bring the artist community together.

Added CCAH Director Amy Kimberly, “We are especially excited to host the first Valley Visual at The Launchpad. We are glad that a community show of such high quality will be so close to downtown and accessible to the public.”

As part of the Valley Visual tradition, CCAH invites the public to come view the art and cast their vote for the People’s

Choice Award.

All 60 artists work will be hanging at the CCAH’s R2 Gallery at The Launchpad and a select number of works with hang in Bonfire Coffee on Main Street through March 7.

The show is open to the viewing public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In other CCAH action: As part of the Artists Beat series, 3D printing expert Diego Madero (Anderson Ranch) will speak at the Launchpad from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 5.

Cirque D’Sopris returns to Roaring Fork High School at 6 p.m. on March 31 and 2 p.m. on Feb. 1. This year’s theme is “The Chinese Zodiac.” The show brings together youth from Glenwood Springs and Carbondale, and as far away as Paonia. Now in its fourth year, Cirque D’ Sopris began as a youth fashion show that spun from sewing classes at CCAH and Second Shift’s afterschool classes at Carbondale Middle School.

“We soon realized that youth had imagination and talents that needed to be manifested beyond their fashion creations,” Colley said.

“Though Cirque D’Sopris still features youth fashion, the show has grown to include so much more … Crystal River Ballet students will be performing along with martial arts students from Rising Crane.

“I don’t think the smell should be tolerated,” Zentmyer told the other trustees.

Harvey, who acted as mayor pro-tem in Bernot’s absence, asked if it is really possible to eliminate all the odors associated with marijuana cultivation, and Harrington said that the proper filtering of the air is believed capable of doing so.

After considerable discussion, the trustees decided that further work is needed on the town’s marijuana-related ordinances, and that a work session on the subject should be scheduled in the near future.

The proposals from the four applicants range from 17 to 58 pages.

Suggestion rejected At least one member of the fire board, newly elected member Carl Smith, suggested the firms’ proposals be uploaded onto the fire district’s website (www.carbondalefire.org), but his suggestion was rejected by other board members. The district’s staff attorney, Eric Gross, researched the question and said he found statutes that back up the district’s decision to keep the information confidential as a matter of protecting “proprietary information” submitted as part of the proposal.

At a meeting on Jan. 20 with The Sopris Sun, members of the district’s master plan proposals review committee, chaired by fire board member Mike Kennedy, declined to release the bottom-line dollar amounts associated with the different proposals.

The committee members cited a concern that publicizing the bid amounts would violate the firms’ interest in confidentiality. The RFP document, however, does not mention confidentiality as a consideration in the bid process, though Fire Chief Ron Leach stated that two of the firms he contacted by phone said they wanted their “proprietary information” to remain confidential.

Plus, according to Kennedy, one of the proposals was submitted without a precise price tag attached, although it did lay out the firm’s hourly rates and estimated time commitment for doing such work.

An added rationale for withholding the price tags that were submitted, according to the fire district’s attorney, is “because the process hasn’t been completed.”

He and others at the review committee meeting also declined to say whether the board, after a firm is selected, will make public the bid amounts submitted by whichever firms are not selected.

The continuing disinclination to post the master plan proposals on the website troubled Smith who, though he went along with the attorney’s finding that the proposals

should remain confidential, still believes the district would be better served to let the public see the documents.

This is especially true, Smith told The Sopris Sun on Tuesday, given the fact that the Jan. 28 meeting will be a public one, and the dollar amounts attached to the bids are likely to be revealed at that point anyway.

The $90,000 earmarked for the master plan, Smith said, is “a major expense” for the district that warrants greater public airing.

Plus, he said, since the district received the firms’ proposals, “I’ve gotten half a dozen people ask me to have it posted so they could see it.”

That, he maintained, is an example of “citizen involvement, which is what this (the master planning process) is all about.”

Surprised The decision to keep the proposals confidential also surprised another local government official, Carbondale Town Manager

Jay Harrington.

After checking over previous RFPs sent out by the Town of Carbondale for different projects, Harrington noted that they, like the fire district’s RFP, contained no reference to confidentiality guarantees for the bidding companies.

“I would have taken that to mean it should be considered a public document,” Harrington said.

When a firm is selected by the fire board, according to a “Scope of Work” document describing the project’s goals, “A schedule of fees will be negotiated with the selected consultant for the services to be performed. It is the intent of the district to enter into a contract with the firm most qualified to perform the planning services.”

The board meeting on Jan. 28 will be held at the Carbondale Fire Station on Meadowood Drive and is expected to take up to four hours in the afternoon. The public is invited to attend.

Wyly continues “Domestic Wild” and “Two Worlds” Sopris Sun Staff Report The Wyly Art Center opened its newest exhibition, “Domestic Wild,” featuring the artwork of Carbondale resident and internationally exhibited and collected artist Susan Obermeyer Strauss. Her current work features paintings of horses (her obsession), in a broad range exploring man and horse through many cultures.“ The show continues through March 7.

“Two Worlds,” featuring the artwork of Bayard Hollins, continues at the Wyly Annex through Jan. 24. A Basalt resident and internationally exhibited and collected artist, his contemporary landscapes interact between classical realism and abstract expressionism conveying the rawness of nature in an explosion of color.

Upcoming at the Wyly: Charmaine Locke and Tai Pomara present “Signify” at the Wyly Annex. An opening reception is slated for Jan. 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. The show continues through March 7.

“Arabic Contemporary Art: An Art Talk” with Michelle Dezember takes place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 4. In a rare opportunity to discover museum practices outside of the west, Dezember will highlight “Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art,” which opened in Doha, Qatar in 2010. She will describe the museum’s educational program to demonstrate how to engage underserved communities in non-traditional settings and how to engage target audiences with the artist’s process. The suggested donation is $10.

On Feb. 19 from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Susan Obermeyer Strauss will discuss her current

C’dale trustees to consider in-fill proposal Jan. 27

By John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent The ongoing neighborhood hassle over approval by the Planning and Zoning Commission for redeveloping an old home in old town Carbondale, at 191 Sopris Ave., is about to move into the more rarified atmosphere of the town’s board of trustees for a formal appeal of the P&Z decision.

The meeting is to take place on Jan. 27 at Town Hall, at the request of a neighbor of the proposed redevelopment, Brigitte Heller of 226 S. 2nd St., just around the corner from the project site.

Although the P&Z would have been the final approval required for the redevelopment proposal under normal circumstances, the appeal means the board of trustees will review the proposal as though it were a new development plan coming before the board, in a procedure known as a “de novo” hearing.

“The trustees may make a ruling in favor of the application with conditions or deny the application or even continue the application if needed,” wrote town planner John Leybourne in an e-mail to The Sopris Sun.

“Any appeals to the decision of the trustees decision would go to the District Court in Glenwood and would have to be filed within 30 days of the decision.”

As approved at the P&Z level, the plan by developer Kim Kelley and her company, Sopris Properties LLC, calls for a four-plex containing 5,081 square feet of habitable space, including four garages, on a lot of just over 8,200 square feet in size, at the intersection of Sopris and South 2nd Street.

The proposed building, according to the Dec. 10, 2014 approval, would be 25.5 feet high at the roof’s mid-level, a height that looms large in the objections of neighbors.

The site currently is occupied by a singlestory, 2,600-square-foot house, formerly occupied by Harold Leonard, but purchased by Kelley and her company in 2006.

Heller, who has lived in the neighborhood for 22 years, has called the proposed fourplex a “monstrosity” and a “skyscraper,” and has told numerous town officials she feels it is too tall and too massive to fit properly into the neighborhood.

In a Dec. 19, 2014 letter to town planner Leybourne and the P&Z, Heller maintained

the proposed building would “encroach on the neighboring properties,” both her property to the north of the redevelopment site, and to the east, on the home of 92-year old Laura Bair.

Heller maintains that the proposal does not meet the requirements of the town’s “in-fill” regulations, which were designed to increase the density of some downtown areas, because of these and other “impacts” on the neighborhood.

The building mass and its close proximity to her own house, is inappropriate and does not meet a requirement that redevelopment be “sensitive to existing structures on adjacent lots and appear similar in scale and character” to its neighbors, according to Heller’s letter.

Other “impacts” listed in Heller’s letter include increased traffic from the added residents of a four-plex, compared to a single-family home, on an already busy street; visual clutter that would include the presence of large dumpsters in the alleyway between Heller’s home and the Sopris Properties lot; and the possibility that neighboring properties will be “devalued”

by the presence of the new four-plex, among other issues.

Heller was not alone in her opposition to the project.

Others, most notably Jeff Maus, who lives diagonally across South 2nd Street from the project site, also decried the building’s height and mass, and questioned whether the plans adequately satisfy the in-fill guidelines adopted by the town.

But some citizens, as well as members of the P&Z, felt the developer had done what she could to modify the project to meet neighbors’ concerns, including a reduction in the height of the building from her original plans, a reduction in the square footage of the structure, and changes to the facade of the building to reduce what some neighbors felt was a “commercial” appearance.

Members of the P&Z, who heard the neighbors’ complaints and criticisms of the project over the course of three separate meetings between early September and early December, gave their unanimous vote of 4-0 on Dec. 10, after Commissioner Rich Comp recused himself from the discussion and the vote because he lives in the neighborhood.

We should have put a stop to RVR and the Golf Course. We should have stopped all kind of building here in Carbondale. On one hand you’re saying in the letters, we can’t stop progress and in the next you’re saying, we don’t want any new City Market. We don’t want anything but pot shops or real estate developers except the kind that suit us.

High priced gas stations, bike paths, just build on small lots, cover up the ditches, etc.

So which is it? Cater to a few people that seem to be self-important or get on with life and let us have a decent City Market and perhaps a few stores, like a stationary store, a place to buy clothes other than the Dollar Store that we can afford.

Just some thoughts to think about while you’re living in your little ivory towers. Oh and here we go again with the affordable housing chant.

She reinstated the pledge of allegiance being said as a school together in every classroom each morning (why this ever went away in the first place is beyond me). She created “Ram KaBam” awards: each month the school would gather in the gym for a spirit assembly and two children from each classroom would be recognized for a unique quality or significant improvement they achieved.

By the end of the year, every child in the school was given a Ram KaBam. Talk about positive reinforcement!

In the first year that Heather was the principal at CRES, the school increased its state rating by an entire letter grade.

These are just a few examples of the positive changes I have seen Heather make at our school. She has always been open to communicate with me and any parent that walks into her office. I have appreciated her efforts and dedication to our school and our children. My daughter, at bedtime last night, said “I am sad my principal is leaving, I wish she would stay.” I responded:

“Me too.”

Dear Editor: Thanks for printing some letters regarding the height of some of these buildings that are going up.

Buildings don’t need to be so tall and maybe these contractors need to think about how they would be impacted if they lived right next door to where they are building?

Then there is those against a new City Market and “Lets keep everything quaint in Carbondale.” Well if we wanted to keep everything quaint in Carbondale, then we should have stopped so many houses being built here. He likes to take an interest in other people,â&#x20AC;? states Crystal Meadows resident Hetty Van Kesteren.

Hartmut (pronounced Hartmoot) means â&#x20AC;&#x153;courageâ&#x20AC;? in German, but Hartmut Schiffer isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sure that applies to him. His self identity is most aligned with his time as a Waldorf teacher, promoting the educational theories of Rudolf Steiner. He was always attracted to the spiritual values in education, and after enrolling his daughter in a Waldorf school in Munich, decided to devote himself to teaching at Waldorf schools in the United States and Germany.

He was born in 1925 near Paderborn, Germany, the son of a professional cavalry soldier who served in World War I. Schiffer joined the German navy during World War II, and served as an ensign on a destroyer from 1943 until the end of the war. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was on the wrong side. Thankfully, I was not on the Bismark!â&#x20AC;? he told The Sopris Sun. Schiffer spent most of his time in Denmark, Norway and Estonia. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We shuttled women and children refugees to Denmark because the Danish would care for them. I knew that food was becoming scarce in Germany, so I bought supplies, including hams.â&#x20AC;? Those hams would later help to save his life.

At the ďŹ rst house he came to, he traded the hams for a pair of shorts and knee-high stockings. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I knew I looked very young for my age. I was 19, but looked barely 16. I trusted my external appearance.â&#x20AC;?

Schiffer walked 250 miles home, tapping on farmhouse windows along the way to beg for food and hoping for shelter in barns. Whatever supplies he had left, including cigars and cigarettes, he traded away. When he ďŹ nally arrived home, he discovered Polish soldiers living there. Though they were kind to him and his family, he opted to make his way to Munich. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There were rolling hills leading into the pine forests around Munich.

It was so beautiful that I knew I wanted to stay.â&#x20AC;?

Work included 1 ½ years in a factory that melted down old brass ammunition casings to make works of cast art. He earned an apprenticeship before moving on to selling paintings to the Americans now stationed in Germany. He also attended the university in Munich, studying logic and philosophy. His work life was full of multiple adventures, including a stint as a tour guide in Italy. But his heart was tied to the ideas of education and spiritual  philosophies.

Years later, when his daughter attended a Waldorf school  in Munich, he became drawn into Steinerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s theories of learning, and spent the rest of his life teaching at Waldorf schools in both Europe, including Lichtenstein,  and the U.S. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1960 and received his M.A. in Education; he taught in Hanover, Germany, and Los Angeles, Sacramento, Washington D.C., and Boulder. At the age of 73, he was asked to teach a fourth grade class at the Waldorf School on the Roaring Fork. He stayed there, building a teacherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s library, teaching and substituting, until the age of 79.

Schiffer is still heavily connected to his Waldorf friends  and old students. Recently, a student from his very ďŹ rst class called him. He beams when he talks of his years in the classroom, and is still an active learner, listening to books on tape in order to understand other philosophies and religions. He has the dapper look of a man at peace who still enjoys  a great conversation, new friends and a life in Carbondale.

after the war When the war ended, the sailors were allowed to take their minimal belongings with them to a German barracks where they were held as POWs. Their guards were Scottish soldiers who circled the compound on bicycles. It only took Schiffer a few days to realize that he could escape. He hopped the seven-foot fence in his navy blues, carrying a white sweater and a small knapsack with supplies, leaving Â
