Take it or leave it At Carbondale’s Christmas tree recycling drop-off spot at Fourth and Colorado, The Sopris Sun noticed last weekend that one man’s trash is another woman’s treasure, or something like that.

Why would anyone, such as Lisa Johnson (right), be taking trees? Doesn’t she know that Christmas 2014 is over, and her newly acquired tree probably won’t last until December 2015?

Turns out, the tree heister reports that her goats loved the pine needles on her tree and they wanted some more really, really baaaad! Another goat owner said her goats also love pine needles but only certain kinds. On a related note, pine needles are reportedly good for goats as they are high in Vitamin C. Goats will also be happy to know the town will accept Christmas trees through the end of January.

Wood stoving: ere is lots to learn

By Patrick Hunter It’s cold outside. If you are like me, my wood-burning stove is cooking along. I’m burning wood that is mainly trimmings and dead or overgrown trees needing removal.

I thought I knew something about wood burning, but then I went to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Website called “Burn Wise.” The EPA has a partnership with the stove-manufacturing industry.

They have the responsibility under the Clean Air Act to set standards for air quality. Those standards include the kind of emissions produced by wood burning.

Their latest version is due out soon.

The EPA has studied the issues around wood burning for heat in very great detail.

They have also worked with the manufacturers to develop better equipment. A lot of these improvements will be phased in over several years. One feature that is very effective is catalytic converters; they are similar to what is on the tail pipe of your car.

A converter uses a metal-like platinum that increases the heat and burns up particles that would otherwise go up your chimney.

Even some new conventional fireplaces can come equipped with catalytic converters.

The better heaters will also have convolutions built into them that make the smoke go a longer distance before it goes up the chimney. That allows more heat to be used in your home.

Why, you may ask, has the EPA made so much effort? In many parts of the country, the topography, altitude and temperatures contribute to a really unhealthy quality of air. Years ago Aspen had a huge problem.

Driving into town you could see a solid cloud of dense smoke. That cloud was a combination of wood burning and grease smoke from restaurant exhausts. Every condo had a wood burning fireplace for the mountain vacation ambiance. Unfortunately, fireplaces do very little to heat a place since most of the heat of the fire goes up the chimney, along with the smoke. Aspen and Pitkin County have had a policy of removing wood burning fireplaces. In many cases, people have substituted gas log “appliances.”

OPINION

Burn-Wise There were at least two things on the Burn-Wise web page that were new to me.

First, “hydronic heaters” are a special kind of wood burning heater that sits outside of

a home or other building. It has a chimney and is air-tight. It has a large firebox and some can take logs up to four feet long.

These heaters are wrapped with a jacket of water that is connected to the house with underground pipes. The fire heats the water that is pumped into the building and can either run right through your radiators, or is connected to heat exchangers. Typical units run as much as $10,000. The bigger models can heat several buildings, their domestic hot water, and heat hot tubs and swimming pools.

I talked to a dealer in Kremmling, Colorado. He said it’s not unusual for an owner to buy an entire truckload of logs for firewood. We are talking about a logging truck! This is “big boy” wood burning. If you are a rancher, your cowhands are going to spend some time sawing and splitting firewood. The dealer said there were hundreds of these units in his area.

The rural setting means that many folks would otherwise heat with propane or electricity, which is much more expensive than natural gas. Naturally, these kinds of units produce prodigious amounts of emissions and are a real target for the EPA. WOODBURNING page 9

Carbondale and sculpture Dear Editor: I agree with the folks who are disgruntled about the new sculpture. It really has nothing to do with what made Carbondale, Carbondale. It has to do with the future of our town.

I chose Carbondale to live 25 years ago

because of its affordability, its beauty and its peoples, and a huge reason I chose it was its neighboring towns. In one direction was the largest hot springs in the world and shopping malls, and in the other direction was a city of culture and glamour, and a place to make a living working for the rich.

Aspen paid us well.

Today, Carbondale’s workers are getting it from both ends.The influx of more and more money is changing the cost of living (i.e. Housing). And the influxes of people from other countries (who are paid low wages) make it impossible for many workers to make a decent paycheck. And now Carbondale is a town budding into a Telluride, Sedona or Jackson Hole, and is a suburb of Aspen. It is no longer run by progressives in the sense of having grassroots values. It’s a socio-cultural change that is happening worldwide and is evolving into the rich, the poor and not much in between.

I like to think where $200,000 could have been used, like building another badly needed animal shelter, or updating the one we have, or building tons of affordable housing for locals who are going under, or for the workers who deserve a place to hang their hats and continue to live in the town they love to death.

Since I am discussing the sculpture and the changing of the town’s guards, I would like to remind everyone that Carbondale is the only town in the United States that does not spray poisons on the grass at our local park. The center piece for the round-about could have represented a dandelion, especially since there are more than 250 toxic chemicals in the umbilical cords of our offspring. So my hat is off to the founders of these kinds of rules that made our town what it is/was.

New group promoting “middle-income” senior housing John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent An ad-hoc group of Carbondale-area residents is hoping to convince a developer to build a new, “middle-income” senior housing center in the Carbondale area, as a way of helping senior citizens to stay in the Roaring Fork Valley rather than being forced to move away in their old age.

A development partner is talking with the group, but a representative told The Sopris Sun this week that the idea is too preliminary to be discussed in any detail, although a potential site is under contract and the company is starting to interview architects for the project.

The representative declined to comment for the record about the project or the development company that is considering it.

The group has been dubbed the “Senior Coalition to Determine and Address Senior Housing Needs in the Roaring Fork Valley,” although it is known simply as The Coalition among its advocates.

The Coalition got its start two years ago when longtime local resident Chris Chacos, co-founder with his wife, Terri (founders of the Village Smithy restaurant), met with Jo Anne Anderson, when the two were neighbors at the

Ranch at Roaring Fork just outside Carbondale.

Anderson, who has lived in the valley for nine years, said she had spent the previous 45 years living in Arizona and was aware of a number of retirement communities that she felt could be replicated here.

“Really, for seniors who want to stay here, there’s nowhere to downsize.”

– Jo Anne Anderson “Really, for seniors who want to stay here, there’s nowhere to downsize,” she said, referring to seniors’ need to shift from life in a family-sized house to more compact quarters, once their children have moved out or their circumstances otherwise have changed.

Aside from the cultural vacuum created when senior citizens move away, Anderson noted, “These are the people with disposable income,” so their departure can deal a

blow to the local economy, as well. She said the goal is to build a housing complex aimed at “middle income” seniors, to fill in a gap between facilities that serve low-income residents and those that are for wealthier seniors.

Anderson said the Coalition had its first meeting about a year and a half ago, in Glenwood Springs, and that a recent meeting in Carbondale, at the Methodist Church, has added to the growing interest in the project.

“It’s exciting times,” said Chacos this week. “It’s a lot of potential on the horizon here.”

And Bill Dunn, chair of the Senior Matters nonprofit organization in Carbondale, said of that organization, “We support it.”

Anderson is a member of Senior Matters, Dunn said.

The organization’s mission, according to its web site (www.seniormatters.org) is to “foster diverse educational and social programs for seniors of all ages.”

Dunn called a meeting for Jan. 15 in Carbondale, to bring together local advocates of the project and the development company. But the company representative told The Sopris Sun on Tuesday that while a feasibility study of the concept had just been completed, the meeting itself probably would be postponed to some future date.

Rep. Bob Rankin pushing two bills in legislative session C’dale resident snags JBC position John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Fresh from his re-election victory last November, and set to dive into the 70th session of the Colorado General Assembly this week, Colorado Rep. Bob Rankin (R-Carbondale) already had been hard at work for more than two months in his new role as a member of the bi-partisan Joint Budget Committee (JBC), which oversees the state’s $26.9 billion annual budget.

“It’s really good to have a person from the Western Slope on that committee,” Rankin told The Sopris Sun during an interview on Jan. 3 in Carbondale, explaining that while he is the sole Western Slope member on the JBC, his position give him the chance to “ask questions about things that might affect us over here,” issues that might not be raised or addressed by representatives from districts in eastern Colorado.

Rankin, 72, says of himself on his Facebook page, “I am a constitutional and fiscal conservative who believes in limited government, less regulation and support of free market capitalism.” His district includes Garfield, Rio Blanco and Moffat counties in northwest Colorado.

“If there’s a species that comes up on the radar, and we’re doing a good job protecting it, it works better with local protection,” Rankin declared, adding that the same is true for resource management plans concerning such areas as the Roan Plateau in western Garfield County, where environmentalists and the energy industry have clashed over oil and gas drilling proposals.

Rankin said he was involved in negotiation of a recent compromise settlement regarding the Roan Plateau, and predicted, “We’re going to try to do that with the Thompson Divide,” an area near Carbondale where a similar dis-

pute over oil and gas drilling plans has done on for the past five or six years.

His bill, he said, would bring the state government into such disputes on the side of local governments, and would result in negotiated settlements that meet the needs of environmentalists, industrialists, ranchers and area communities.

“We can make it a win for everybody,” Rankin said, calling his approach a way of creating “a better partnership RANKIN page 5

Bill #1 Rankin said he already has two bills he plans to introduce this session, which is scheduled to run from Jan. 7 until May 11, 2015, barring unexpected extensions.

One bill he is certain he will be introducing is a “Federal Lands Coordination” bill, which calls for greater coordination between state government and the local governments at the county and city level in dealing with federal oversight of public lands in the state.

He termed this “a major bill that I’ve run two years in a row, that I’m going to get passed this year.”

He said that 70 percent of the lands in Western Colorado are federally controlled, a circumstance that often generates friction between federal land managers and local governments for a variety of reasons.

For example, he pointed to the ongoing debate over the status of different wildlife species that the federal government has listed as threatened with extinction, such as the sage grouse.

He pointed out that Garfield County has come up with its own sage grouse management plan, which he felt is as good as anything the federal agencies have in mind, but local governments have trouble convincing federal authorities to accept local management ideas.

Good news on the water line front Sopris Sun Staff Report

So far this winter there have been no frozen water lines reported in Carbondale, according to a memo written this week by Carbondale Finance Director Renae Gustine. The memo (dated Jan. 2) stated that notifications have been sent out to water customers on the “freeze list” about the possibility of lines freezing during the colder months of the year.

• The installation of curb-and-gutter at the north end of the Highway 133 project, along the area occupied by Garcia’s Market, Rob’s Automotive and the Aspen Skiing Company housing complex (formerly Thunder River Lodge), is scheduled for the spring.

• A regional water efficiency plan, available for public perusal on the town’s website (carbondalegov.org), will be made available for public comment soon, according to the memo, which noted that meetings on the plan are to be held in the coming week.

• The town’s winter/spring recreation brochure was distributed as an insert in the Sopris Sun on Jan. 1 and schedule and sign-up opportunities are available at the recreation department’s website (carbondalerec.com). The memo reported that a full slate of climbing classes has resumed this week, including an added climbing class for kids aged 4-6 years, called the Spider Monkey Class, which was included in answer to consumer demand.

Youth Hockey lessons were scheduled to begin this week, including two additional days for the Adults Learn to Play Hockey program, which will take place on Thursday nights in January. Youth Basketball League continues to practice from 4-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday in the recreation center. Games will start up in January against teams from Aspen, Basalt and Glenwood.

• Regarding Carbondale Police Department training activities, the memo reported that several officers recently completed recertification classes in “roadside maneuver” testing for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and that several officers will undergo winter-driving training in January.

In other highlights from Gustine’s memo: • The town’s two ice skating rinks, at Main and Fourth streets in the center of Carbondale and at the Gus Darien Riding Arena on Catherine Store Road (County Road 100) east of town, finally froze solidly enough for users to get out and do some skating over the weekend. Reports on the condition of the ice were positive from hockey players and non-hockey users. Meanwhile last week, town crews were busy clearing away snow and dealing with icy street surfaces in advance of the First Friday celebration on Jan. 2, and the annual Family Skate Night at the in-town rink.

• Public works technicians continue to refine the controls and settings for both the wastewater treatment and the water treatment plants, to improve the efficiency of operations. Among the new methods, according to the memo, is a system of automatic chlorine feeds at the water treatment plant to minimize the need for plant operators to be on hand to adjust the chlorine levels, and adjustments to the “screw press controls” to reduce the buildup of biosolids in the wastewater treatment system.

• Workers for the Colorado Department of Transportation were planning to complete work on a new traffic signal at Highway 133 and Snowmass Drive, and have

FRIDAY, Dec. 26: At 11:37 a.m. police were called to a home in the 900 block of Highway 133 and arrested two individuals on charges of harassment and domestic violence against the man involved, and third degree assault and domestic violence against the woman.

FRIDAY, Dec. 26: At 10:51 p.m. police were notified that a 22-year-old man was missing and that his family was concerned for his safety. By the next day, the man’s mother called back to report that the man had turned up at a relative’s home after spending the night at a church, and was OK. SATURDAY, Dec. 27: At 11:46 a.m. police took a report of an alleged check-fraud incident, but upon contacting the Ninth Judicial District Attorney’s office were informed the DA would not file criminal charges and that it is a civil matter.

SATURDAY, Dec. 27: At 5:31 p.m. police issued a warning to one man suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and “suspicious behavior,” and a warning to another man for exhibiting “suspicious behavior.”

SATURDAY, Dec. 27: At 10:08 p.m. police stopped a vehicle on Main Court for traveling without headlights, and ticketed the driver on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was summoned into court and released.

SUNDAY, Dec. 28: At 2:35 a.m. police stopped a vehicle at Weant Boulevard and Euclid Avenue, and ticketed the driver for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

TUESDAY, Dec. 30: At 4:04 p.m. police received a report of alleged sexual assault by a juvenile. No further information was available about the incident.

TUESDAY, Dec. 30: At 8:52 p.m. police encountered a vehicle that had slid off the roadway along River Valley Ranch Drive, and arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Heroin not so rare, OD’s are apparently up John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Heroin, according to local police and emergency-care officials, is less of a rarity in the Roaring Fork Valley than it has been in the recent past, and the medical personnel with the Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District say they dealt with several such cases in 2014.

But exact statistics are hard to come by, primarily because heroin overdose cases can appear essentially the same as, say, an overdose on opiate-derived prescription medications.

But whatever the drug involved, emergency medical professionals say, there is a remedy available as quickly as an ambulance can get to the scene.

The remedy for opioid overdoses, said Carbondale Deputy Fire Chief Rob Goodwin, is a substance called Naloxone, known by its brand name, Narcan, which blocks the brain receptors that heroin attaches too and thus blocks heron’s effects.

Narcan is administered either through “auto-injectors” that plunge a needle into a limb, typically a leg, or it is administered nasally.

“It's extremely effective,” Goodwin said, “and there's no real side effects.”

He said he has seen cases where the patient had stopped breathing and was on a ventilator when the antidote was administered, and the person has quickly come out of the comatose state.

“We have had a number [of opioid overdoses],” continued Goodwin, “more than you can count on both hands, in Carbondale in the last year. And that number includes quite a number of heroin cases.”

The other drugs in such cases, he said, include prescription pain killers such as codeine, morphine, and oxycodone, which is found in such brand names as OxyContin and Percocet.

While he acknowledged that hard numbers are not easily available, he said it is the common belief among emergency medical staff that “it (heroin) has made what I'd call a considerable comeback” in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Carbondale Police Lt. Chris Wurtsmith concurred, say-

Rankin om page 3 with the federal government” and avoiding the cost and time of bureaucratic battles and possibly court action over everything from species protection to mineral extraction and cattle grazing.

Asked if his approach has anything common with the old Sagebrush Rebellion of the 1970s and 1980s, when westerners tried to wrest control of public lands from federal hands and turn control over to state and local governments, Ranking conceded, “There’s some of that going on.”

But, he said, “That’s not what my bill is all about.” He maintained that federal land managers “love it” when local governments offer to form partnerships in these matters, and that his bill will help that to happen.

Bill #2 Another bill he has in his pocket would provide state funding to help the 20 Boards of Cooperative Educational Services, known as BOCES (pronounced “bo-seez”), which provide a variety of services and programs to school district throughout the state.

The goal of his bill, Rankin said, is to help school districts pay for such things as informational technology (computers and related equipment), transportation services and teacher training.

“It’s not a new idea,” he conceded, “but (currently) there’s no funding channeled to the BOCES network to do all this.”

He said there is “pressure” from some officials to further consolidate school districts to improve efficiency in education, but that school districts mostly object to such pro-

But, he said, statistics are difficult to come by.

“When we go to an OD, typically, no one's going to get arrested,” he explained. “It's bad enough they're going to the hospital.” So, he continued, the incident is put down as an “ambulance assist” and left at that.

“We have had a number [of opioid overdoses], … more than you can count on both hands, in Carbondale in the last year. And that number includes quite a number of heroin cases.”

Still, after going through 242 ambulance assist reports for 2014, Wurtsmith counted three reported heroin overdoses, one cocaine overdose and one case where the subject was “detoxing” from a problematic dose of heroin.

Statewide deaths A story on Channel 4 news in Denver last April reported that the number of heroin-related deaths in the state had more than doubled in just over a decade, from 37 in 2000 to 91 in 2012. A third of those who died in 2013 were between the ages of 20 and 34, the report stated, and five of them were teenagers.

The Channel 4 story also reported, “The number of (Coloradans) seeking treatment for heroin nearly tripled in

posals in order to preserve local control over schools.

So, Rankin continued, “Rather than consolidate the districts, we’ll consolidate the ‘back-room’ functions, the overhead functions, so we can operate a lot more efficiently” to achieve the core mission of a good-quality education.

His bill, he said, will ask for $500,000 in grants to the BOCES, plus smaller grants later, in a “three-year pilot program” that probably will be limited to assistance to a few of the BOCES initially.

He explained that there are 174 school districts, the smallest of which has only 12 students in a northeastern section of the state, “and they do not want to consolidate” but are in need of assistance such as that offered in his bill.

A key part of his reasoning, he said, is a shortfall in state funding for schools due to state budgetary problems, to the tune of $894 million that was earmarked in a statewide constitutional amendment, Amendment 23, approved by voters in 2000 to reverse a decade of budget cuts in the 1990s.

Rankin said there are other bills he is thinking about, noting that JBC members can put forward “as many bills as we like” during a legislative session, compared to the five-bill limit imposed on the other members of the General Assembly.

Rankin and his wife, Joyce, 67 (who works as his legislative aide at a wage of $11.50 per hour) also have started in an outreach program that engages high school students in monitoring and reporting on the state legislature. The program was started last year, said Joyce Rankin, and in that first year involved at least one student from every county in his district.

Beyond that, he encouraged residents of his district to pay

the last decade. The number of people admitted to state drug treatment programs primarily for heroin abuse rose from 1,643 in 1993 to 4,556 in 2013, the latest year statistics are available.”

Last August, Fox31 News in Denver stated bluntly, “In the last five years, the number of heroin users has doubled in Colorado,” although no statistics were offered to back up that contention.

Heroin’s comeback A large part of the reason for heroin's comeback, experts have said, is a recent tightening of restrictions on opioid-based prescription medications, which has become something of a national health crisis.

Plus, according to one local expert, heroin is cheaper than the prescription pills, making the drug even more attractive.

“This actually is something that's become a lightning rod for conversation,” said Bob Ferguson, owner of the Jaywalker Lodge recovery facilities in Carbondale.

That conversation was jump-started when actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman died nearly a year ago, at 46, of an overdose of mixed drugs including heroin, Ferguson said.

“The supply is plentiful, and the cost is low,” he said of the drug.

A decade ago, when Jaywalker opened its doors, cocaine and speed were the most often cited addictions by those seeking help.

Now, he said, “heroin and opiate addiction is more prevalent.”

And while his residents are clean and sober, he said, they are “keenly aware of what's available out there,” and they would openly say that heroin is readily available in the valley.

At least to emergency medical personnel in the Roaring Fork Valley, according to Goodwin, it does appear that heroin can be easier to obtain than the pills that come from a pharmacy.

So, he said of the crackdown on prescription medications, “It's working, and that's probably a good thing,” though he noted that a regrettable consequence seems to be an uptick in the use of heroin and in overdoses from that drug.

Chances are, no matter how intrigued you were by the Highway 133 roundabout construction project last year, you probably missed some of the action packed moments, such as: the trafďŹ c lights being taken down, the concrete curbs being poured, the concrete curbs drying in the sun, highway striping, the new pedestrian crossing lights, the crane that pulled up in late November to lift the Surls sculpture into place, and so much more. If you’re lamenting the fact that you missed a lot more of the construction than you witnessed, here is some good news. On June 13 last year, Bill Knapp, of Security Solutions, put a time-lapse camera on the Sopris Liquor & Wine building at the intersection of Highway 133 and Main Street, and programmed it to make one image every 10 minutes for eight hours a day throughout the project. Knapp’s son, Aaron, who creates graphic images for TV commercials, helped edit the footage, which came in at 2 minutes, 46 seconds. The construction of the Highway 133 roundabout is now available for viewing. Just go to youtube.com/watch?v=UfW0vOaUcZQ. Who knows? You might even see yourself.

Shiloh Merriott, a 2013 graduate of Roaring Fork High School, was recently accepted into the Louisiana Tech University nursing program in Ruston, La. Upon completing the program, Merriott will be prepared to sit for the licensing exam to become a registered nurse. In 2014, the Louisiana Tech University program was ranked No. 21 out of the top 100 nursing programs in the country by College Atlas AList rankings. Shiloh is the daughter of Frosty and Carly Merriott. Her great-grandmother Eunice Webb completed her degree at Louisiana Tech in 1908, her grandmother and grandfather ďŹ nished in 1941, and her dad in 1970. Shiloh plans to become a pediatric nurse.

Some RFTA riders riled over crowded 133 lot Expansion slated in spring or summer John Colson Sopris Sun Correspondent Area bus riders might be forgiven for being a little upset at the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority about the availability of parking spaces at the Carbondale Park & Ride lot, acknowledged the transit agency’s CEO Dan Blankenship recently.

But, he promised, things will improve in the spring or summer.

“We’re in the height of the busy season right now, and the lot’s overflowing,” said Blankenship in an interview in late December.

But RFTA planners had been working on a solution, including the purchase of a lot next to the Park & Ride at a cost of $425,000 and making plans to expand the parking lot, plans that he had hoped would come to fruition before the end of 2014.

But, he said, the agency got a nasty surprise when construction estimates for another Park & Ride expansion project in New Castle came in last fall at more than twice the $500,000 estimate.

At that point, he said, he and his board were worried that RFTA was at the mercy of contractors who already had plenty of work, and who were putting high-premium prices in their estimates for anyone trying to get more work out of them.

So they decided to put off the bid process for Carbondale, dropped plans for the New Castle expansion, and are on hold until a little later in 2015 before they put out a new set of bid documents.

“We hope to be able to get more competitive bids for Carbondale and for New Castle,” Blankenship told The Sopris Sun, explaining that until the high bids came in for New Castle he had anticipated spending about the same amount in construction costs for each project — about $500,000.

Photo by Lynn Burton He said the agency has applied for federal grant money that could be used to augment RFTA’s construction budgets for the two projects, if that becomes necessary.

“Certainly the Carbondale project is one we think is a high priority,” he said, adding that he hopes to get the project built in the spring or early summer.

Blankenship was eager to placate angry bus riders who find themselves circling the Park & Ride lot in the earlymorning rush to find scarce parking spots, then having to drive back into the center of town to park and take a connector bus back to the Park & Ride.

He suggested that bus riders driving to the Park & Ride lot in the morning should keep in mind that the lot typically is filled up by 7:30 a.m., and adjust their schedule accordingly to allow time to park in the center of town and

get to the Park & Ride lot.

He said there is auxiliary parking between Colorado Avenue and Main Street at Highway 133, and another lot near town hall on Colorado Avenue, and that the Carbondale Circulator bus will take drivers from stops near each of those lots to the Park & Ride facility.

The schedule for the circulator bus has it at the Sixth Street bus stop (near town hall) at three, 18, 33 and 48 minutes after the hour, and taking roughly seven to eight minutes to get from there to the Park & Ride lot to connect with Bus Rapid Transit buses heading upvalley or downvalley.

The circulator stops at the Main Street bus stop at Highway 133, according to the schedule, at four, 19, 34 and 49 minutes after the hour, with a transit time of about six minutes to the Park & Ride lot.

Who is that guy?

Dear Editor: I am just wondering who this guy is from California who keeps writing items for the Western Slope to read and then acts like this country is just his crystal ball.

Gosh, this guy must have his head in some beach ball as he points out how great the economy is: jobs galore, Obama has created three million jobs and there are only 18 million out of work Americans; millions of government workers on the dole. It doesn’t equate to a great jobs market.

Even the media is saying with tongue in cheek that there is a long way to go. Then he talks about how the DOW is way up there, so that equates to a brilliant Obama economy? Well we all know that the stock market has been manipulated for years and years. So it could drop at any time. Any market that tends to jump hundreds of points also tends to correct itself hundreds of points. We all know that the economy picks up about Thanksgiving and then starts jumping in December, but then when Jan. 1 rolls around, it can fall flat on its face. This, gentlemen, fails to mention all the trillions of dollars in debt that hasn’t been paid back. We just took on another trillion so that the government wouldn’t shut down in February.

So, tell me again how great everything is going in all of the other states where jobs are scarce, but there are now millions of illegals that Obama is going to give jobs to between four and some of them because we need more of the so called “Hispanic elites” that have chosen to stay in the USA. The lawyers, the administrators, the judges, etc. etc.

Frankly, I think this guy is joke and really doesn’t know of what he speaks of. Just another know it all from a California surfer.

CMC names new vice president Sopris Sun Staff Report Following a national search, a new vice president will soon lead Colorado Mountain College’s campus in Edwards. Dr. Kathryn Regjo, currently president and CEO of Lincoln College of New England, will start her new position at CMC March 1, according to a press release.

Regjo is currently the president and CEO of Lincoln College of New England, a small, private residential college in Southington, Conn. Before joining Lincoln College, she held several positions with The Princeton Review, a national leader in providing college-bound students with testpreparation services, tutoring and admissions resources, as well as resource books and online courses.

Jeremiah Johnson, a search committee member, said “During the interviews I saw that Dr. Regjo possesses a focused, analytical mind that is supported by a warm and collaborative personality. I believe Dr. Regjo will make informed, confident Dr. Kathryn Regjo decisions and that she will make an excellent leader for our campus.”

Regjo holds a Doctor of Education in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Denver and a Bachelor of Arts in international business and German from Adrian College of Adrian, Mich. She also studied at the Universität Heidelberg in Heidelberg, Germany.

The second new thing for me was wood pellets as a fuel for heating. Wood pellets are really popular in the upper East Coast and Midwest. They are also very popular in Europe. The pellets are available locally in bags or by truckloads. Some hydronic heaters are designed for burning pellets. They have a second container next to them that allows the automatic feed of pellets. The advantages to wood pellets are: high energy content, low emissions when burnt, the ability to regulate their burn rate, low amount of ashes, and the automatic nature of their use. Some inside-the-home burners have a screw-auger feed that sends the pellets into the burner. The equipment works just like gas fired equipment and responds to thermostat controls.

Internationally, wood pellets are marketed as commodities. Quantities such as 20,000 tons are traded. Full shipping containers are traded. Entire shiploads are traded and the whereabouts of such ships is a topic of discussion on websites.

I became more interested in wood pellets when I spoke with a real estate agent in Austin, Colorado, who had invested in a company that was coating these pellets with polyethylene — melted pop bottles. He said it became difficult because China was buying up all the available pop bottles. (Seriously?) He said they sold the concept to a company in Amsterdam.

Wait a minute!

It turns out that wood pellets are replacing coal in power plants in Europe. Pellets have about one-tenth of the emissions of coal. Shiploads are being sent to Europe from the United States But guess what? You can buy pellets at the Roaring Fork Valley Co-op, Ace Hardware or City Market. They are sold in 40-pound bags. There are three brands available in Carbondale. The pellets are made in Walden or Kremmling, or in Sand Point, Idaho. The Colorado products are using dead pine trees that were killed by beetles. You may have a pellet heater in your home, or, you may want to burn pellets in your wood burning wood stove. One can buy a perforated basket that fits in your wood stove into which you can pour the clean-burning wood pellets.

Keep biking to work – even in the winter

By Darin Binion During an incredibly foggy bicycle commute one fall morning, I looked up and saw Mount Sopris peeking out from behind the clouds. I had to stop and take a picture of the incredible beauty of this valley in which we live.

The next day, while running errands on my bike, I ran into a friend on the bike path, and we stopped and chatted for a bit, talking about how fast the summer had passed us by.

We all get caught up in our daily routine, and before we know it, summer is gone. We get depressed because we feel like we didn’t get outside as much as we wanted. Commuting by bike allows for that daily exploration and to get outside. When I arrive at work every morning after pedaling in, I feel refreshed and ready to start the day, and when I head home after a stressful day at work, it is all but gone in the first few pedal strokes.

No matter why you choose to initially start commuting by bicycle — more exercise, more freedom — you will continually find more reasons to continue commuting by bike.

Now that we’re officially in winter, a lot of you may be thinking only of next summer and that you need to ride your bike more during the warm months. I’m here to encourage you to try riding in winter, too.

We live in the Roaring Fork Valley and have

the gear to play outside all winter. Much of that gear will cross over to cycling even if it is not “cycling specific.”

The commute When people ask me how I commute all year long, I tell them that as long as you take care of your fingers and toes, you can be happy for many hours in the cold and wet conditions. We all know that is true when we are skiing, snowboarding, hiking/snowshoeing, and it is very true for cycling/commuting as well. I love Pearl Izumi gloves, and I have about three pair (including lobster mitts) that provide varying degrees of warmth. I will also add pogies/bar mitts for extra warmth and wind proofing. Pogies attach to the handlebars, wrap around your hands, and cinch shut, creating a microclimate similar to a sleeping bag.

I usually wear my Shimano insulated and waterproof cycling shoes and on mornings below 15, I put on flat pedals and wear my Bogs because they’re toasty warm.

As far as pants and other layers, I typically wear a pair of Ibex wool knee warmers with a pair of bibs. If it’s less than 25 degrees, I will wear some Endura pants that are wind proof but not waterproof so they remain highly breathable.

As you ride more and more, you will get used to the daily changes in weather and know exactly what to put on in the morn-

Carry more Winter commuting is obviously much slower, especially if you’re using studded tires (which I recommend), wearing more clothing and carrying more items. You should carry all the normal tools in case you get a flat or have another mechanical breakdown. Down jackets are amazing for times when you need to stop.

Lights are important, and I use a Niterider USB rechargeable headlight that is about 150 lumens and lasts the 14-mile, one-way commute, which typically will take me 45-75

minutes, depending on conditions and time of year.

I commute on my Xtracycle, which allows me the carrying capacity to take everything I need to and from work. There are a variety of ways to carry things on your bike and not have to carry a large pack on your back, especially important on the longer commutes. It also allows you to travel lighter and not feel like you are lugging around a ton of stuff. Rack and panniers have been the most popular way for commuters for many, many years. Leaving a few changes of clothes and even keeping a small toiletries kit at work can help in situations where it is especially hot during the summer months and you arrive at work feeling a bit spicy.

There are many reasons we live here in Colorado and the Roaring Fork Valley, and for me it is to be outside as much as possible.

With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, it is very hard to not take every advantage of heading outside, especially right before work and immediately after.

Putting oil and gas development into perspective

Hobbs The sputter of the 100 LL gasoline powered engine rattles through the six-seat Cessna 210. “I use oil and gas,” pilot Bruce Gordon, of EcoFlight, states as he points to the dashboard of the small plane while we taxi towards take off. “EcoFlight is not against oil and gas drilling, but feel, it must be done properly and responsibly. There are some places where it shouldn’t be done, such as the Thompson Divide.”

The Thompson Divide area he is referring to today is a controversial swath of land being considered for oil and gas drilling, much of which is designated roadless. It sits to the west of Carbondale, south of Glenwood Springs, east of Rifle, and north of Paonia.

EcoFlight’s mission is to educate and advocate for the protection of remaining wild lands and wildlife habitat, which are dwindling daily, by providing an aerial perspective and encouraging an environmental stewardship ethic among citizens of all ages.

This land is to be preserved in its natural condition, for nature’s sake, wildlife’s sake, our sake, and for future generations. Its forests are thick, lush and unbroken as seen from above.

Our flight continues west, past Mount Sopris and the town of Carbondale, where we enter the Thompson Divide area. There are clear signs of human impact from past

For the most part though, this land is flourishing and healthy with thick forest and clean waters.

There is ample opportunity for wildlife to live relatively undisturbed.

The last portion of our flight takes us above the oil and gas drilling operations near New Castle and Rifle. This land appears bar-

ren and dry, worn out like the skin of an old rancher who has spent decades in the elements. There are no signs of trees or forest surrounding the drilling operations. Roads crisscross much of the land. Retention ponds sit stagnantly so the chemicals we put in the water can dissipate out. I cannot say if the land is this way because of oil and gas, having not seen this area from above before its prevalence. But it is clear that there is a difference between land near drilling and land that is not.

Perspective When it is all said and done, it is a matter of perspective. The perspective of proponents of oil and gas is as legitimate as any; oil and gas drilling produces energy, which at this point we all use to some extent, and it stimulates the economy, allowing many people to make a decent living and support a family.

On the flip side of the coin, opponents of oil and gas believe the same economic value can be created by using renewable resources (solar, wind and water) without the risks of environmental and health impacts.

The perspective I gained from a bird’s eye view makes it clear that oil and gas has a direct impact on the surrounding land. There are many ways we can remedy this. Living in a capitalistic culture, the most powerful vote we have is with our dollar. As long as we demand oil and gas, it will continue to be produced. If we make simple changes in our individual lives by walking, riding the bus, eating locally, conserving resources and choosing to use renewable energy, we can truly make a difference.

While each of us continues to make our individual lives better, there are some great organizations that are working tirelessly behind the scenes to help educate and advocate for the protection of wild lands, such as: EcoFlight (ecoflight.org); The Thompson Divide Coalition, working to secure permanent protection of the Thompson Divide from oil and gas drilling (savethethompsondivide.org); and Wilderness Workshop, working to protect nature for its sake and ours (wildernessworkshop.org). Think of donating to one of these great non-profits as a gift to nature, wildlife, yourself and your grandchildren.

Most of all, remember it’s all perspective.

Put yourself in the shoes of the father working on a drilling rig who wants to give his daughter an opportunity to live the best life she can. Put yourself in the perspective of the trees and the water whose voices are not heard. Put yourself in the perspective of future generations and imagine what they will think of our current actions. It’s all about education and perspective, and I thank EcoFlight, Bruce Gordon, and his dedicated team for helping to broaden that perspective.

We are in this together and we can do better.

Or do we come in wild and exit wild, and negotiate our wildness as we locate the boundaries of domestic living? SNOW REMOVAL POLICY As we begin our annual snow removal efforts, the Town of Basalt asks for cooperation from residents of the Town in the following areas:

• RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS - All snow from private property or adjacent sidewalks, should be stored on private property. Residents are responsible for clearing snow along sidewalks and away from mailboxes and fire hydrants.

• PRIVATE SNOW PLOWING - Placing, dumping or pushing of snow onto city streets or right-of-ways from adjacent properties is prohibited.

• STREET PARKING - Cars parked illegally may be towed.

• SAFETY AROUND PLOWS - Please slow down and use caution. Keep back a minimum of 50 feet.

• CHILD SAFETY - Please ensure that children refrain from playing on, in and around snow mounds.
