Most of the boys enjoy the stunt; the girls like to work more on their technique than their nose-dives. As the week concludes, PE teacher Marty Madsen and parent volunteers will return with the students to slip, slide, race and chase on skates, laughing all the while.

Food Co-op in “transformation;” hiring new manager

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer The Carbondale Community Food Co-op (or Co-op for short) is undergoing “a major transformation” aimed at boosting the store’s inventories and stabilizing the organization’s finances, while paying off old debts to vendors, according to its newsletter and a statement by the Co-op’s board of directors.

The first sign of the upcoming changes, however, is the appearance of a new face in the store’s office.

Long-time store manager Avtar has left, and board member Julie Edman is standing in as interim store manager while a search committee headed by board member Laurie Guevara-Stone looks for a permanent replacement.

According to Guevara-Stone, Avtar left the position in mid-December, apparently in keeping with the board’s approval of a “strategic plan for growth.”

The Co-op, located at 559 Main St., has been in business for six years, and a couple of years ago expanded into an adjacent retail space, considerably increasing the size of the operation. It operates on a combination of paid staff and volunteers who receive a discount on goods purchased at the store.

In a statement issued by board-chair Emily Steers, the board recently “identified the need to adapt and become a leader in the local food movement in order to ensure success [for the store} in both the near and long terms.”

The board concluded that this kind of strategic planning will be part of changes in the “dynamic of our community and local economy,” and will require a set of skills “required to ensure a vibrant business. It is with this realization that the board of directors has come to the conclusion to transition to a new general manager.”

The Co-op’s board has come up with a set of objectives “we aim to achieve by 2018,” including: • Investment in a “point of sale” or POS system “so that we can more accurately track our inventory to provide more efficiency in ordering and pricing.”

• Refining, simplifying and clarifying the store’s systems and procedures, in particular with regard to agreements with “business partners,” so that the organization as a whole “can put more time and energy into cultivating a vibrant culture that meets the needs of the CCFC’s member-owners, as well as our local and global community.”

• And setting up a “give-back program to lend a helping hand however we can to those in need in our community.”

Regarding the change in management, Steers wrote, “We are extremely grateful for the strong foundation Avtar has created for the CCFC and now it is time for us to build upon all that she has so diligently nurtured.”

The search for a permanent replacement, Steers wrote,

will focus on “key attributes” that include “financial acuity, social marketing expertise and general knowledge of the natural foods industry.”

Guevara-Stone told The Sopris Sun that the job opening has been advertised locally and nationally, and that applications will be accepted until Jan. 15.

Already, Guevara-Stone reported, about a dozen applications have been received, “and (we) have some great candidates. We are starting interviews this week, and hope to have someone hired in the next couple of weeks.”

Marijuana shop heist suspects still sitting in Garfield County jail

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer The three men suspected of committing a Dec. 7 armed robbery of the Sweet Leaf Pioneers cannabis shop in Carbondale currently are cooling their heels in the Garfield County Jail on bonds ranging from $100,000 to $220,000, and are charged with felonies that could land them in jail for decades and impose fines of up to $1 million on one or all of them.

A 17-year-old male who allegedly took part in the robbery also is being charged with the crime, but will be tried in juvenile court and has not been identified due to his status as a juvenile. Ninth Judicial District Attorney Sherry Caloia said the juvenile, who will turn 18 in March, is not going to be charged as an adult.

According to court records, the three adults charged with the crime — Arturo Nuño-Cervantes, 21 and Erick Jose Colon, 25, both of Glenwood Springs; and Bryan FloresCalix, 19, of Silt — each face five or six felony counts, the most serious of which are armed robbery of drugs, armed robbery in which the victim was menaced with a weapon, and kidnapping or forced confinement, all of which are class-2 felonies.

Class 1 felonies, which include first-degree murder, are the most serious in terms of potential penalties, according to state records.

A class-2 felony, according to the Colorado Legislative Council, carries a possible “presumptive” sentence of eight to 24 years in prison, meaning a sentence in that range could

be imposed under ordinary courtroom circumstances.

But if a judge or jury finds that there were extraordinary “mitigating” circumstances to the crime, meaning circumstances that might make the crime less serious, the sentence could be as low as four years in prison.

Conversely, if there were extraordinary “aggravating” circumstances involved, making the crime more serious, according to state records, the sentence could go as high as 48 years in prison.

According to Colorado’s sentencing guidelines, conviction of a Class-2 felony also can carry a fine of up to $1 million per charge.

Among the additional charges faced by the three adult men accused of the robbery are menacing with a weapon, theft and possession of a weapon by a previous offender, in the case involving Colon.

Of the three, only Nuño-Cervantes is not facing a kidnapping charge.

According to affidavits seeking arrest warrants for the three adult suspects, filed by Carbondale Police Officer Tade Shivley, a Garfield County dispatcher at 10 a.m. on Dec. 7 alerted law enforcement officials in the area that an armed robbery had just occurred at the Sweet Leaf Pioneer store, 1101 Village Road.

The suspects, according to the dispatcher, had fled in a red Ford Mustang and had headed south on Highway 133, and that the Mustang had been reported stolen.

Police were told by the victims that two men had walked into the store, one wearing a mask, and that one of them

had pulled a semiautomatic pistol with a laser sight on it and demanded cash and goods from the clerk in the store.

The robbers reportedly got away with roughly $1,000 in cash and about $3,500 in product, according to the affidavit.

Officers from Carbondale and Glenwood Springs, as well as Garfield County Sheriff’s deputies, meanwhile were driving around the road between Carbondale and Glenwood Springs, including Garfield County Road 108, looking for the red Mustang. But a deputy radioed in that he had seen a green Honda Civic “with four individuals inside the vehicle” and that “as he passed the vehicle all four individuals were keeping an eye on the deputy.”

Nuño-Cervantes, police later reported, owns a green Honda Civic.

Another deputy, according to the affidavit, came upon the vehicle from behind and stopped it for speeding. The deputies, conducting what Shivley termed “a high-risk stop,” corralled all four people inside the Honda and took them to jail.

Deputies also later reported finding the red Mustang on CR 108, just over the line between Garfield and Pitkin counties.

While looking in the trunk “for another individual,” deputies reported, they found a bag that matched the description given by the store clerk of a bag used during the robbery.

Town Briefs Cop Shop P&Z scrutinizing shopping center application

From Dec. 24-30, Carbondale officers handled 147 calls for service. During that period, officers investigated the following cases of note:

Sopris Sun Staff Report Carbondale town staff members have been reviewing the Carbondale Marketplace subdivision application (which includes City Market’s proposed new store). The project is scheduled for a public hearing before the Planning and Zoning Commission on Jan. 21, according to Town Manager Jay Harrington’s weekly report. The application can be previewed on the town’s website (www.carbondalegov.org) and from a binder notebook containing the complete application at the front desk in Town Hall (511 Colorado Ave.).

In other news from Harrington’s report, for only the second time in 20 years, “we had a full crew, including staff from streets, parks and utilities (departments) working Christmas Day,” getting ice and snow cleared from streets, sidewalks and trails.

And, in acknowledgement of the deep-freeze weather that visited the region recently, Harrington wrote that the utilities department has advised residents with past freezing problems to run a slow flow of water to keep water lines from freezing.

Harrington also reminded all that the Christmas tree recycling area adjacent to Town Hall is open and ready for business.

Both of the town’s public ice skating rinks are now open for the season, on a temperature-dependent basis as the calendar moves toward spring. Skate rentals are available at the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center (CRCC), next door to Town Hall, at $3 per day or $10 for three days.

The CRCC will be conducting its annual Membership Appreciation Special through Jan. 31, offering a free month’s membership to those who purchase either a three-month or a six-month membership.

Also at the recreation center, sessions of the Youth Climbing Class and Climbing Club, along with Youth Ice Hockey, Broomball, the All-Star Sports Camp, Adult Ice Hockey and a “Winter On the Mountain” trip for seniors were scheduled to begin the week of Jan. 4-8. The “Winter On The Mountain” outings presently are scheduled for every Friday in January, taking participants to the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park in Glenwood Springs. A town van will pick up participants at the CRCC, at the Crystal Meadows senior housing complex and the Manor I senior housing center in Glenwood Springs. The cost is $5 per participant, the deadline for registration is a week prior (sign up on Friday for the trip the following Friday). More information is available at 510-1290.

The proposed Unified Development Code (UDC) that has been under review by the planning staff was scheduled to be released for public review the week of Jan. 4-8, and to be sent to town boards and commissions for their own review, Harrington wrote.

Town staffers have been working on comments for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s Draft Environmental Impact Statement regarding gas-drilling leases in the Thompson Divide.

According to Harrington’s memo, Carbondale Police Department officers have been taking part in a CIRSA (the insurance pool that Carbondale belongs to) training called “Under 100.” He explained that it is a training “designed to keep police on-duty fatalities to under 100 per year.”

On the public works side of the ledger, Harrington reported that the town’s water treatment plants are all “fully operational,” with minor repairs and problems cropping up now and then.

SATURDAY, Dec. 26: At eight minutes past midnight, police stopped a vehicle for failing to obey a stop sign, and then arrested the driver for driving while his license was suspended, among other charges.

SUNDAY, Dec. 27: At 1:30 a.m. police stopped a car that had no license plates, and then arrested the driver for driving while under the influence of alcohol or marijuana, and a passenger for being a minor in possession of alcohol, among other charges.

MONDAY, Dec. 28: At 1:05 a.m. police stopped a vehicle for expired registration, then arrested the driver for driving under the influence of alcohol, among other charges.

MONDAY, Dec. 28: At 10:34 a.m. police took a report about a theft from a home on Wheel Drive.

TUESDAY, Dec. 29: At 5:40 p.m. police were informed of a hit and run accident at City Market, in which a vehicle identified as possibly an early-model Toyota Tacoma hit a Toyota Prius and fled the scene.

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 30: At 8:46 p.m. police responded to a call from a Graceland Drive home concerning a domestic dispute. On arrival, officers arrested both occupants on charges of harassment and domestic violence.

Ice skating 101 From lacing up their skates to hitting the ice, it appears as if the students in CRES teacher Marty Madsen’s ice skating outings at the downtown Carbondale ice rink are having so much fun that they don’t care about falling.

They just get right back up again. Whether they’re trying to skate alone, holding on to chairs or holding on to Madsen or one another, it seems that they’re happy about coming back to school after the holidays.

Multiple Elvis sightings?

Be prepared for Elvis sightings during Sunlight Mountain Resort’s 29th annual Skier Appreciation Day on Jan. 8. How come? Elvis Presley’s birthday falls on Jan. 8 this year and word has it the snow is so good at Sunlight, the King cannot pass it up. Lift tickets are only $20 during Skier Appreciation Day, with proceeds going to Garfield County United Way. Sunlight General Manager Tom Jankovsky, and Phil Long (of United Industries) hatched the day in 1986 as a way to give back to their community.

“First we just offered it for free to the community, and after a couple of years, we cooked up the idea to charge a few bucks and donate the lift-ticket proceeds to a charity,” said Long . “Since our local United Way helped support dozens of other non-profits, we wanted to be impartial, so that’s where we sent the money, and we’ve been doing that ever since.” In 2015, Long was recognized with the Garfield County Humanitarian Service Award. Word has it, Long is soon going to retire from his day job. But, he emphasized, he’s not going to give up his enthusiastic charitable support for this beloved annual event. To date, Sunlight’s Skier Appreciation Day has raised $200,000 for United Way of Garfield County, which was recently re-commissioned as United Way Battlement to the Bells.

Rebekahs do it again The Rebekah Lodge of Carbondale is offering an all-expense paid trip to UN Pil-

grimage for Youth in Washington, D.C., according to a note Ann Samuelson dropped off at The Sopris Sun on Monday. The trip is open to students 16-17 years old and have one year of high school remaining. They must fill out an application, along with a 500-word essay, and turn it in by Jan. 22.

The trip will take place in July. For details, call 963-2459. Samuelson said the Rebekahs have underwritten the trip for several years.

This just in The Jan. 20 Naturalist Night program at the Third Street Center features Patrick Magee, Ph.D., talking about the red fox, its history and winter activities. The red fox is one of the world’s most widespread mammals, and its range is increasing. The red fox population in Gunnison, where Magee teaches at Western State Colorado University, has only been present since 1980. The talk is presented by Wilderness Workshop and ACES, and starts at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Ryan Alexander Jennings Aug. 25, 1973-Dec. 30, 2015 We are very sad to say good-bye to Ryan Jennings (42) of Carbondale, Colorado, who passed away in an ice-climbing accident on the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 30. Ryan was an award-winning realestate agent with Coldwell Banker Mason Morse, a brilliant photographer, and avid and renowned alpinist, kayaker, skier and all-around outdoor enthusiast.

Ryan was born in Colorado Springs in 1973. He and his family relocated to Carbondale in 1980 and lived here until he was 12 years old. He graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1991 and from Colorado State University in 1996.

He met his lovely wife, Robin, in 2002 in Colorado. They decided to start their lives together in Carbondale in 2003 and were

married at the Flying Dog Ranch in 2004.

They are blessed with two beautiful children — Beck (9) and Brooke (6), both of whom attend the Waldorf School on the Roaring Fork.

Ryan knew having spent his youth in Carbondale that this was where he wanted to raise his family. His love for the community was deep and enduring. He had a great affection for the people he worked with, and felt so fortunate to intertwine his appreciation for this community with his career. Ryan was grateful every day to wake up to the grandeur of Mt. Sopris.

His greatest joy was the time he spent in the mountains and on the rivers with his friends and family.

Ryan is survived by his wife, Robin, and their two children, Beck and Brooke; his parents, Alex and Sharon Jennings of Grand Junction, Colorado; Janis and John Colantino of Centennial, Colorado; four step-sisters, including Crystal Colantino of Carbondale, one step-brother and a large extended family.

A memorial will be held at The Orchard (110 Snowmass Dr.) in Carbondale on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please visit www.beckjenningsfamilyfund.org or any branch of Alpine Bank.

Basalt Library enters 2016 on special-event high note Sopris Sun Staff Report The Basalt Regional Library’s first high note of 2016 is a literal one. The Flatiron Camerata Madrigal Singers from the University of Colorado-Boulder, along with Aspen Music Festival and School musical connections and resident artists, present “Byrds & the Bees.” The concert features 16th and 17th century madrigals, under the direction of Jeffrey Dixon and Allison Zema. The concert is free and starts at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 13.

On the movie front, January’s free indie film is “Second Coming” by Debbie Tucker Green. This adult drama is set in England, where the main character (a middle class woman) finds herself miraculously pregnant. Throughout her search for an answer, the film takes a look at the life and struggles of a family living in London. “Second Coming” runs 105 minutes; it starts at 5:15 p.m. on Jan. 12.

Continuting with the special events, the library hosts a book signing and talk with novelist Dipika Rai (“Someone Else’s Garden”). This acclaimed book takes readers to an India where women are little more than a commodity and burden, and life is a daily struggle. This event goes from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Jan. 19.

Trustees discussing tax hikes, lighting ordinance

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer The Carbondale Board of Trustees on Jan. 13 will be debating a couple of revenue-raising proposals, in the form of an energy fee that would be attached to local utility bills, and a property tax increase meant to pay for capital improvements projects and take some ďŹ scal pressure off the town’s general operating fund.

The meeting — which is a formal, regular meeting — is being held on Wednesday in keeping with the trustees’ decision late last year to change their meeting day from its historical schedule of the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, to the second and fourth Wednesday.

Town staff told The Sopris Sun that packet information for the Jan. 13 meeting was not available for inspection by the newspaper’s deadline, because the information typically is not sent to the clerk’s ofďŹ ce until Thursday for the following week’s meeting.

But according to interviews with two trustees, it is likely that at least the energy fee will be placed on the municipal election ballot in April.

The ballot question is in keeping with the town’s 2020 climate action plan, which calls for reductions in Carbondale’s “carbon footprint,� or amount of energy used by local residences and businesses, by the year 2020.

A memo to the trustees for a meeting on Dec. 15, 2015 contained the text of a similar “climate action planâ€? tax hike put before the voters in Boulder, Colorado, in 2006, the same year that Carbondale adopted its 2020 energy efďŹ ciency goals.

The Carbondale ballot question, according to discussions at the Dec. 15 meeting and at earlier meetings, would be loosely patterned after the Boulder initiative.

In Carbondale’s case, said Trustee Allyn Harvey on Wednesday, the energy fee would amount to approximately $7 on residential utility bills (with a higher amount assessed against local businesses), and could raise perhaps $200,000 per year or more in revenues to be used on programs created by the town and its energy-efďŹ ciency consultants, Clean Energy Economy for the Region (CLEER) and Community OfďŹ ce for Resource EfďŹ ciency (CORE) to help local residents and businesses retroďŹ t their properties to achieve more efďŹ cient use of energy. “I think there’s a lot of support for that,â€? Harvey said, referring to the trustees as well as to the electorate.

The need for the energy fee, according to statements from town staffers and the trustees, is in response to the expected loss of energy impact fees that come from energy companies doing business in GarďŹ eld County. Those fees are predicted to be reduced in the coming years as the energy industry scales back its work in the county.

Asked about the fee proposal, Trustee John Hoffmann told The Sopris Sun on Wednesday, “My own personal thoughts are that ‌ we need to fund these kinds of projects, and this is one way to fund it.â€?

Hoffmann noted that local residents, who would be paying into a special fund fueled by the fee, would be eligible to get beneďŹ ts from that fund in the form of energy-efďŹ ciency retroďŹ ts to their homes and businesses that would be partly subsidized by the new fund.

The other proposed ballot question would ask voters to approve a property tax dedicated to capital improvements.

That proposal, Harvey said, “is more up in the air right now� than the energy fee.

Harvey said the fee has been under discussion, in one form or another, for some time, where the capitalimprovement tax only came up late last year as a speciďŹ c proposal.

The property tax, Harvey indicated, might need more discussion and community input before being put to the voters, and might not make it on this spring’s municipal ballot.

In general, Harvey and Hoffmann both said the tax would be limited to use for such things as repairing and maintaining streets and sidewalks, creating more parking in the center of town and other “infrastructure� improvements that the town has been delaying due to a lack of funds.

Capital improvements have for years been paid out of the general operating fund, which normally goes toward the town’s operating expenses rather than capital projects.

A property tax, Harvey said, “gives us more exibility in the general fund budget,â€? by freeing up money that otherwise might have gone toward capital projects and can instead be put to use in operational needs.

The trustees also will be discussing, at the Jan. 13 meeting, proposed changes to the town’s lighting code.

A New Path offers new road to addiction recovery

By John Colson Sopris Sun Staff Writer At A New Path, an addiction-recovery support organization in Carbondale, the first sight that greeted a recent visitor was a tabletop lined with ornate gingerbread houses, of the kind one might expect to see at a Christmas bake sale.

But the tiny edible structures actually are part of the ongoing support and therapy offered by A New Path, which operates out of the Third Street Center and is part of a growing trend in the addiction-recovery community nationwide.

Pointing to the gingerbread houses, and a photo of a recent Christmas dinner for the clients, A New Path’s director, Stefan Bate, told The Sopris Sun during a recent interview, “We try to make a big deal out of the holidays, because holidays can be a tough time for the guys. Some of the guys told us this is the best holiday they’ve ever had.”

And when he says “the guys,” Bate is not engaging in any kind of linguistic gender bias, because the clientele of A New Path is strictly men.

A New Path, which has programs and offices in Carbondale and in San Rafael, Calif., was founded by Frankie Grundler and Rob Mockley, two members of the Roaring Fork Valley’s surprisingly large recovering community who went through the Jaywalker Lodge recovery programs in Carbondale about a decade ago.

The two founded A New Path after they graduated from Jaywalker and realized there was a lack of comprehensive, long-term recovery-support programs for people in their particular circumstance, Bate explained.

They concluded that, for many recovering addicts and alcoholics, the standard treatment route leaves them ill-equipped to deal with the same pressures and frustrations that led them to drugs or alcohol in the first place, which means that many end up trapped in a yoyo pattern of treatment, falling off the wagon and getting back into drugs and alcohol, followed by another round of treatment.

So, Grundler, who had a background in corporate business management, and Mockley, with an IT consulting portfolio under his belt, “decided to take a good hard look at why” so many were relapsing and going right back to the bottle or the needle, Bate said.

The two quickly concluded that help in developing the skills and knowledge to make it in life was what was lacking in many treatment programs, which mostly focused on detoxing the drunk or the addict, offering counseling to help them through the first spasms of recovery, then released them back into society.

So the two created A New Path to offer a variety of support services designed to help recovering alcoholics and drug addicts to stay on course with their recovery, once they have been through the initial phases of getting off drugs and alcohol.

The organization’s basic mission, Bate continued, consists mainly of helping clients develop a new set of what Bate called “core life skills” that the recovering addicts probably had lacked before they got hooked on booze or drugs as a way of dealing with their frustrations.

These skills can range from such mundane concerns as how to manage their personal finances or how to apply for a job, to any of a number of skills that Bate said are needed by everyone in figuring out “how to engage life.”

Not a straight path Bate, who is 35 and an admitted recovering addict, has been with A New Path for about four years, though he did not come to that job along any kind of straight path.

He said he has been clean and sober for nine years, having gone through several addiction recovery programs including the Jaywalker Lodge program in Carbondale in 2007.
