Fun on ice How many elementary school kids have the opportunity to go iceskating with their physical education teacher for one hour a day for a week? Answer: Students at Crystal River Elementary School. Third grader Dante Humphery (left) thinks it’s fun to skate as fast as he can at Carbondale’s downtown ice rink, then dive over the boards head first into the snow. In this picture, he’s just about to go over. It turns out, Dante is not the only student at CRES who likes to take headers into the snow. Most of the boys enjoy the stunt; the girls like to work more on their technique than their nose-dives. As the week concludes, PE teacher Marty Madsen and parent volunteers will return with the students to slip, slide, race and chase on skates, laughing all the while. For more skating photos please turn to page 5. Next week, Madsen (a 13-year veteran at CRES) takes his students crosscountry skiing. Stay tuned. Photo by Jane Bachrach
