Sage’s dad, Greg, had more than just a hand in facilitating the workouts: he got out there with a shovel on numerous occasions and made like a human Zamboni to shove snow out of the way.

Well, I did it. I survived yet another holiday season existing pretty much on cheese and crackers, chocolate and wine. Inundated with the latest blood-rock, i-gadget and luxury sedan commercials, I’m left wondering how many years we have until WalMart opens their doors on Christmas day.

The last month is a blur of parties and people and trips to the post office. And now, all I have left to show for it is a common cold and a half eaten box of Ritz

By Jeannie Perry crackers, which I admit I’m eating for breakfast as I sit down to write my resolutions for 2014. First and foremost, my New Year’s resolution is to create positivity and keep putting it (myself) out there. I know it won’t be easy; it’s hard to keep smiling at strangers on the sidewalk who don’t smile back. And it’s hard to be a courteous driver when there is too much traffic for our two-lane highway. But I intend to wake up each day and forgive and forget yesterday’s trespasses except for litterbugs. I have to call them out; I can’t help myself. I’m turning into my mother. As a teenager I remember thinking I would die of embarrassment whenever my mom broke into song in the middle of the

grocery store aisle. As if singing “Build Me Up Buttercup” as we filled the cart revealed anything more than our ability to carry a tune.

Now, of course, I gravitate to those people in the grocery store; the wholehearted ones, the ones who aren’t afraid to show their true selves to the world.

If necessity is the mother of invention, then vulnerability and honesty are its sisters. If you think about it, without vulnerability there is no creativity. And in order to create something real, and sustainable, it takes sincerity. (Fraud can’t pass itself off for long before party-goers wander off to talk to someone more interesting, someone genuine.) And if we’re not creating, then seriously, what’s the friggin’ point?

I mean, why bother to get out of our pajamas?

(Don’t get me wrong— in a perfect world we would all be able to create our lives in our pajamas. And I do think we’re headed in the right direction, towards loose-fitting, comfortable clothing for everyone. Think today’s yoga pants in public vs. the conforming suit lines of 1980s corporate slave wear.)

Vulnerability is a funny thing in our culture. It’s not promoted as a positive, and yet just being alive is to be vulnerable. We don’t encourage it in our children, especially our boys. Vulnerability is perceived as the opposite of strength, but is it really? Not according to Dr. Brené Brown, vulnerability researcher: “Vulnerability is not weakness. I define vulnerability as emotional risk, exposure, uncertainty. It fuels our daily lives. And I have

come to the belief — this is my twelfth year doing this research — that vulnerability is our most accurate measurement of courage.”

Dr. Brown collects data from everyday people, people who fall down and make mistakes and then get up and do it again. People who are searching for the same thing we all are: connection.

Family, Fame, Fortune, Faith or Forestry, whichever one of the Five Fs we’re currently seeking is most likely a chance to feel like we’re a part of something bigger. Something substantial. Something we can point to and say look! I belong to this.

After all, we’re humans. Not the most foresighted creatures in the universe, but we got a lotta heart. And as soon as we stop believing in Santa and his military-industrial complex, we might even evolve to be a kind, sharing, sincere species. A species invested in our children’s planet. Dare I say it? A species that doesn’t rank each other by the color of our suits.

It’s 2014, for Pete’s sake! If we can’t put ourselves out there — show our true colors, as they say, then at the very least can we stop judging each other for our cracker preferences.

Whether it’s melba toast, or gluten-free oat crisps with rosemary and raisins, or just a plain ol’ Ritz, it does the job. It holds the vulnerable cheese.

tinually striving to assist, enrich and educate our citizenry. The Third Street Center is the actualization of shared community goals that not only build upon the foundation of our community, but also strengthen the fabric of our character and spirit.”

Reaching out to communities from Aspen to Parachute, the 29 non-profit organizations that share a “home” in the center make irreplaceable contributions to the lives of thousands of families and individuals. The diverse missions of these beloved non-profits encompass human services, energy and the environment, community building, and the arts. The programs provided by the dedicated staff of these organizations engage a wide range of people, including those who are at risk, low-income and/or underserved.

In addition to non-profits, the eclectic mix of tenants includes six for-profit compatible small businesses and five artists that contribute to the center’s vitality. Throughout the day and year-round, TSC buzzes with activity. People learn, socialize, work, are entertained, and play within the center.

Residents and visitors of all ages — from young dance students of Ballet Folklorico to seniors — gather for diverse purposes from arts shows presented by Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities to the local high school prom. Organizations from around Colorado use the two community spaces — the Calaway and Round rooms — that are available to the public at reasonable rates, attracting overnight business to Carbondale.

Single words cannot capture the meaning of a place as multi-faceted as Carbondale’s Third Street Center. But “giving” is a word that comes close enough. The spirit of giving pervades this special place that was created by an extraordinary team effort.

In 2008, the town of Carbondale became a core partner and advocate for the transformation of the then 49-year-old abandoned elementary school into a sustainable nonprofit center and community gathering place.

The town joined with two non-profits, a non-profit funder, local bank, and design professionals to fulfill the vision for a nonprofit/arts center that had been percolating in Carbondale for a decade.

Just three and a half years have gone by since its doors opened in May 2010. Yet, today it is as hard to imagine Carbondale without the Third Street Center as it would be to imagine the town without the Mountain Fair, Crystal Theatre or Village Smithy. Jump-starting English language instruction in RE-1

By Debbie Bruell Sopris Sun Correspondent “It’s like we’re at the starting line and we’re ready to oor it.â€? That’s how Amy Galicia describes the RE-1 school district’s readiness to address the needs of English language learners. Galicia was hired this past summer as the new coordinator of the district’s English Language Development program (ELD).

Galicia has worked in education for the past 21 years as a teacher, program developer and coordinator of bilingual programs in Mexico, Iowa and Colorado. She also has served as president of the Colorado Association of Bilingual Education.

This year the district is moving full swing into a new approach to teaching English as a Second Language with the goal of engaging English Language Learner (ELL) students at higher levels as well as enriching the learning experience for all students. Language instruction will now be integrated into all classrooms (in contrast to limiting language instruction to ELD classes only).

All teachers will be responsible for teaching English language development within the context of their speciďŹ c content area. Teachers also will be responsible for teaching in a way that makes the content comprehensible for students at all levels of English language development.

In previous years, ELD teachers were the only ones who were fully trained to teach English as a Second Language. One of Galicia’s jobs is to train all teachers on how to embed English language instruction into the instruction of their content area and how to provide the supports that ELL students need.

Galicia told The Sopris Sun that this approach (which is being adopted across the state) will enable ELL students to learn the same concepts and skills as their Englishspeaking peers. Previously, teachers tended to “water down� the learning goals for ELL students due to their limited English skills. Now, teachers can expect ELL students to engage in high levels of thinking — analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating information — while they’re still in the process of learning English.

ELL students will also be given more exibility in terms of how they demonstrate that they have learned the content. For example, if ďŹ rst graders are learning to differentiate between living and non-living things, Galicia explained, native English speaking students may be able to demonstrate their understanding by writing a list of living vs. non-living things,

while beginning ELL students could draw pictures or point to images.

With this approach, ELL students can be assessed on how well they understand a concept, not simply whether they know enough English to express how well they understand a concept.

Detract?

Will this new approach detract from the instruction of native English speaking students? To the contrary, Galicia states that “any supports for ELL students enhance learning for all students.� For example, teachers could incorporate more visual learning aids and hands-on experiences to support the ELL students in a classroom. Such varied approaches to teaching provide a richer learning experience for native English speaking students as well.

Galicia also notes that fully integrated classrooms provide all students with valuable cross-cultural learning experiences that don’t exist when ELL students and native Englishspeaking students are in separate classrooms.

Galicia said that extensive research over the past 50 years supports this new approach and debunks some common myths about learning a second language:

• Myth #1: Students learn English best if they stop using their Spanish in school and receive instruction in English only.

According to Galicia, research ďŹ nds that kids who spend some time learning academic content in their ďŹ rst language learn English better than kids who are in Englishonly programs. “Many factors affect how quickly and how well you learn a second language,â€? Galicia said. “The number one factor is how well you know your ďŹ rst language.â€? “At age 5 kids are still learning their ďŹ rst language,â€? Galicia explained. “If they’re in a place where they’re not allowed to continue learning their ďŹ rst language it stunts their learning in the second language.â€? In contrast, if children have the opportunity to develop an advanced understanding of their native language either before or at the same time that they are learning a second language, they will be much more successful at learning that second language.

Of course, instructing a child in Spanish requires a Spanish-speaking teacher. While many RE-1 schools do not have a sufďŹ cient number of bilingual teachers to provide instruction in Spanish, Crystal River Elementary School does provide reading and writing

instruction in Spanish and English to native Spanish speakers in kindergarten through second grade. Basalt Elementary School also includes instruction in both English and Spanish for some children (both native English speakers and native Spanish speakers).  • Myth #2: It’s best for kids learning English to spend their days in classrooms focused entirely on learning English as quickly as possible.

According to Galicia, research indicates that ELL students learn English best when they are surrounded by their native Englishspeaking peers (as opposed to grouping all ELL students into one classroom). Also, kids are more successful in the long run academically if they are given opportunities to advance their knowledge in content areas while their English skills are still progressing. • Myth #3: It only takes kids a couple years to learn English as a second language if they start learning at a young age.

Indeed, young children, after being in school for just a couple years, may be speaking English very well. However, Galicia explains, what these children have gained is conversational English. Conversational English requires ELL page 12

Town Briefs Parks, recreation and trails plan coming in 2014 Sopris Sun Staff Report The recreation department is developing a request for proposals (RFP) for the Carbondale Parks, Recreation & Trails Master Plan update, according to a memo from town manager Jay Harrington. The Parks & Recreation Commission, and the Bicycle, Pedestrians & Trails Commission, will review the process in January. The RFP asks for a consulting team to work with town staff, commission members, a citizen-steering committee and elected officials to complete the 10-year plan by the end of 2014.

The recreation department is also working with several committee members from the Bicycle, Pedestrian & Trails Commission to develop a RFP to seek “design-build” proposals from companies interested in design and construction of the new North Face bike park, which is scheduled to break ground in May.

• The downtown ice rink opened on Dec. 27.

• The finance department is working on year-end reports, closing out 2013 and preparing the 2014 Budget Book.

• A police officer was punched in the head outside a downtown bar on Dec. 22. The suspect was arrested and jailed on charges of second-degree assault.

• Christmas day was very quiet except for a late afternoon hit and run/ DUI arrest.

• The building department issued two permits, reviewed plans and performed four inspections the week of Dec. 23-27.

• Christmas tree recycling has begun in the parking lot at Fourth and Colorado, and will continue through January.

Aer almost 10 years, Russets closing its doors

By Will Grandbois Sopris Sun Correspondent The rumors have been confirmed.

Sunday, Jan. 5, will be the last day of business at Russets restaurant. After just shy of 10 years of operation, including the recession’s rough years, owners Sue and Claude Van Horton are hanging up their hats.

The decision is, according to Sue, purely economic.

Although billed as a “neighborhood restaurant and bar,” the establishment – Sue Van Horton has a reputation for fine dining that has been both a blessing and a curse. When the eatery opened in February 2004, times were good and people had income to spare. When things got tough, Sue surmises, people didn’t think of Russets as a place to just grab an appetizer and glass of wine.

Since word began to get out that they’re closing their doors, they’ve been packed almost every night. Folks are eager to get one last taste of their favorite dishes. In particular, the wild mushroom soup and lobster

“The other night we ran out for the first time ever,” Sue said. “We’ve been going through five gallons of each soup a night.”

So far, they’ve been able to accommodate walk-ins, but as the week goes on, patrons hoping to get a last taste of Russets’ food would be well advised to reserve in advance.

As for what’s next, the space has been listed for sale since late summer, with no buyers. “There’s going to be a huge void. But I’ve been very fortunate. I’ve always said we had the best customers and we’ve been blessed with the best staff,” Sue said.

The Van Hortons have been through this before. Prior to opening Russets, they operated Chefy’s restaurant in Basalt for 15

years. Claude has been cooking in the Roaring Fork Valley for 42 years, getting his start at the Golden Horn in Aspen.

Asked whether another venture might be on the horizon, Sue told The Sun, “We’re not thinking that far ahead. I just want to go skiing.”

Red Kettle Bell Ringing Our club had a successful Red Kettle bell ringing campaign for Salvation Army this Christmas season. We collected more than $8,000, including $1,000 on Christmas Eve alone.

Thank you to all who donated during the holidays, and to all who volunteered to ring the bell, including our fellow Rotarians from the Mt. Sopris Club and non-Rotarians alike, to the local Cub Scouts and to City Market.

Amanda Boxtel visited the Carbondale Rotary Club in December to demonstrate her exoskeleton and speak about the Bridging Bionics Foundation, which raises money to further education and research and development for exoskeltons and bionic technology for the physically disabled.

Ivone MuĂąoz: Remembrances from friends, co-workers, students “She will be missed beyond words.â€? — Wendy Boland, RFHS teacher

Sopris Sun Staff Report Ivone Munoz, most recently an English Language Learner teacher at Roaring Fork High School, died on Dec. 27 following a long battle with cancer.

MuĂąoz, 40, was a Carbondale native and mother of four, with an extended family that included her grandmother, parents, brother, sister, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Here are some recently compiled remembrances and those included in a Sopris Sun article: “I have a single word to describe Ivone: graceful. The way she advocated for her students, made her disagreements known, led her life, accepted her illness, and left this world were done with a grace that few people share.â€? — Sharon Moya “Ivone is an incredible advocate for her students both in the school and out in the community. She serves as a surrogate mother, career counselor, legal aid, college admissions ofďŹ cer, nurse practitioner, nutritionist, and, most importantly, trusted friend to all of her students. Ivone is involved in their lives before, during, and after their high school careers, and has been the difference for quite a few of them.â€? — Cliff Colia, retired principal, Ivone’s substitute teacher “Thank you Ivone MuĂąoz for the life you lived. Store owner shares humble roots with Steve Martin

By S. Michael Jundt Special to The Sopris Sun With the sentiment of comedian Steve Martin, Heirlooms owner Brenda McCartney says, “I was born a poor girl in the middle of America.”

Brenda's middle America was Mound, Minnesota, where hot and humid summers followed by some of the coldest winters below the Canadian border helped to pave a path southward.

“Colorado blue skies and the youthful promise of parties and skiing brought me to my new home in 1979.”

Housekeeping and nanny work paid the bills for a time. Then, in 1984, Claudette Carter took Brenda under her wing in the landmark consignment store Gracy’s in Aspen. From there, Brenda followed her manager, Susan Harvey, to Susie’s, a new consignment store. There, Brenda’s knowledge of recycle, up-cycle, second hand, resale and consignment continued to grow.

Now, says Brenda, “I own my own crazy, fun

consignment shop in the heart of Basalt.” Having upgraded her location twice, Brenda’s Heirlooms has become a staple on Midland Avenue in what used to be the old post office. Her store’s branding is funky and eclectic and laced with high-end finds. There, women’s and men’s clothing, jewelry, art, home goods, furnishings and gifts nicely fill the 2,800 square foot showroom.

“The stories are endless,” says Brenda, “the goods never stop flowing and the fun is contagious. I’ve always wanted to write an account about the pieces that have traveled the valley and the stories they hold in their fibers. I have seen so many wonderful items resurface time after time.”

In an economy where consigning goods has become a necessary win-win for both buyer and seller, Brenda McCartney shines brightly with 28 years of experience that, as she says, “has been a pure joy and good fortune. I do a job that I love . . . and I’ve never had to work a day in my life.”

ICE SKATING is coming to Lions Park in Basalt!

The Mad Hatter’s Ball is back to becoming a local tradition.

Last year, the Aspen Historical Society resurrected the pastime, in conjunction with Aspen History 101, and it was community-tested and approved. On Jan. 9, Aspen History 101 and the Mad Hatter’s Ball return to the Wheeler Opera House to kick off Winterskol.

Dubbed “Mardi Gras in Winter Dress,” the Mad Hatter’s Ball is a Wintersköl tradition that dates back to the early 1950s, according to a press release. Revelers were invited to wear “startling headgear, and the tradition continued into the ’90s. This year, the ball features live music with Jes Grew, starting at 8 p.m.

Hats are highly encouraged and before the concert there will be a contest for “Best Hat,” judged by the Wintersköl King and Queen (7:30 p.m.).

The Aspen State Teachers College presents Aspen History 101, a crash course in local lore. Dr. Slats Cabbage, Klaus Obermeyer and resident history “coaches” cruise through the decades in an entertaining and fun way, including a multimedia presentation.

Aspen History 101 starts at 5:30 p.m. and is free. All attendees will get a student ID card, good for $2 beer at the Mad Hatter's Ball (while supplies last).

ELL continued om page 3 just a rudimentary understanding of the language. (Also, young children are very good at imitating accents, so they may sound like they have a much deeper understanding of a language than they actually have).

Research has found that students need a more advanced, academic understanding of English in order to excel in school. According to Galicia, research demonstrates that it takes an ELL child an average of 5-10 years to reach academic grade level proficiency in English equivalent to a native English-speaking peer.

When ELL students in the RE-1 district are placed into regular classrooms, they continue to get the language support they need to thrive in these classrooms (rather than just expecting them to thrive since they can speak conversational English).

Blending cultures Galicia’s perspective on ELD programs as a whole is that they should aim to blend cultures together and take the best of both cultures. She said that she does not believe in forcing children to assimilate or “to give up one thing and replace it with another.”

Galicia points out that nationwide about 70 percent of ELL students are already U.S. citizens. Many of them are from families that want both English and Spanish language and traditions in their home.

“I’ve taught the children of people who were physically beaten for speaking Spanish in school,” Galicia said. Many of these parents chose not to teach their children Spanish. As a result, those children are unable to communicate with their grandparents. “That won’t happen if we accept the best of both cultures,” Galicia said.
