Motorized madness in Marble GUEST

Trying to enter a wild, natural area using a motorized machine is like chasing a mirage or a rainbow: the closer you approach, the further they recede.

The mirage and rainbow are ephemeral, optical events which disappear because your position relative to the angle of incidence and reflection changes as you approach.

The real and significant changes made on natural areas by men on machines cause the wilderness to actually recede.

An ecologist would identify different wild communities as

wetland, alpine meadow, mixed forest and many others. But another way of classification has just two distinctions: either natural, undisturbed native vegetation or disturbed areas invaded by noxious weeds and subject to erosion. Any time you drive or park on living vegetation, you damage or kill it.

What comes back is not beautiful columbines, it is ugly thistles or other invasive weeds. Never drive or park on living vegetation.

Travelling under power is quick and easy. But what do you miss?

Our brothers, the eagle and heron have soared away, disturbed by the noise. The bear, moose and others have run away. The path you travel is deep with loose dust, which your machine stirs up. In fact, the vegetation on both sides of your path is coated with dirt . Do you see the yellow bumble bee visit the purple penstemon? Can you smell the flowers? Do you hear the birds calling? In an urban environment of buildings, pavement and chain stores you don't miss much travelling by machine. If you are seeking another type of experience here in Marble, why travel the same way?

When the Spanish reintroduced the horse to the west, it changed the way the natives interacted

with their environment and with each other. The power of the horse suddenly made being a pedestrian a disadvantage in hunting, war or trading.

Those who seek to travel to the Crystal Mill on foot (and there are many) are at a distinct disadvantage from vehicle noise and dust and generally being overpowered and overwhelmed. Does spending 10 to 30 thousand on a machine confer some special power for the driver to intimidate others?

Of all the machines that enter natural areas, ATVs may have the largest impact. They even look like assault vehicles. What kind of attitudes do users have when they purchase models named: Prowler, Defender, Intimidator, Renegade, Dominator, Raptor, Enforcer, Grizzly, Punisher or Razor? These are actual model names.

All Terrain Vehicle means that the machine is designed to travel off established roads and trails. Canyonlands National Park recognized this in their travel management plan. On the extensive four-wheel road system, jeeps are welcome, but no ATVs have ever been allowed. The three reasons for this are: 1. There are other places for ATVs to go. 2. ATVs are more noisy.

3. Most importantly, there is no way to keep them on established paths.

Don't all these reasons apply to the Lead King Loop? When an area starts to be damaged by heavy use, it is time to restrict use to less impactful activities. How many pedestrian user days equal the impact of one ATV user day? A management plan for an irreplaceable natural area should always err on the side of conservation.

Exercise physiologists have determined that an hour of vigorous exercise provides a benefit of two hours of additional lifetime. My role model should be yours too. Roger Paris skied, climbed , kayaked and cycled through this valley for more than half a century and was still skiing a few weeks before he passed at age 90. During his last year he still cycled on an electric bike to his cabin a mile up a steep road . If you must have motor assistance, why not ride the wave of the future on a silent renewably powered electric bike?

Be here now. Decide that you have arrived and are not still on the path to somewhere else. Get out of your vehicle and walk, ski, run ,cycle, paddle or climb under your own power.

Dogs at the dog park

Aug. 1 was a sun alignment day according to the goddess calendar from the Celtic tradition.

In our fine town of Carbondale, we are open to many wonderful people who practice healthy life experiences. Sotantar led a one-hour meditation with almost a dozen participants to celebrate.

I meditate daily and knew some of the participants as we gathered outdoors in a circle ( covid-19 rules followed ). What began as oh, 60 minutes of silence, as this is longer then what I do in my daily schedule. I set my blanket down, adjusted my pillow and took my position, looked around, made eye contact with everyone and smiled.

Sotantar led a couple of chants and we all closed our eyes. Well for me, I had a wonderful meditation. As a matter of fact ,when I got home I described the experience of “dogs at a dog park.”

My heart rate increased and this wonderful veil just embraced me. A feeling of comradery and engagement in a field of others who I hoped had a shared experience.

This feeling lasted for days, that’s why I am

sharing, as maybe it would help heal our country if more people sat in silence and shared cosmic energy to speak then using words with violence.

Dear Editor: I feel compelled to acknowledge a gesture of kindness and generosity in our town amidst a time when so many of our social structures seem to be crumbling.

At the post office last week, while attempting to mail postcards encouraging members of our community to vote, I was told I would have to buy a roll of 100 postcard stamps for $35. All I needed was 10 stamps. The post office person struggled looking for single stamps but was unable to find any. This was part of volunteer action organized by a friend.

The masked man behind me said he had some but they were back in his office. I stood confused about what to do as I only had $10. At that point I mentioned it was not for me but for the Democratic Party and the masked man said “Here how much do you need?" And proceeded to shell out the additional $25 needed for the stamps. I tried to refuse and he insisted, saying it was for a good cause. I tried to find him after mailing the postcards but he was gone in a cloud of dust saying: “Hi-ho Silver, away!”

RFSD embraces state’s athletics policies

That high school sports just ain’t what they used to be would be an understatement, but nonetheless accurate under the current climate.

Now, that the start of the semester is around the corner and students will be nestling wherever they must for distance learning they’ll need exercise outlets to keep their learning minds’ juices flowing. Therefore on Aug. 4 Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) came out with its regulations for the 202021’ season.

First off, spectators should not count on seeing particular sports in the typical seasons they're accustomed to. For instance, football, boys' soccer and girls’ volleyball will begin in the spring rather than the fall. The first bout of sports that have been approved to commence — “Season A” — are: golf (Aug. 3), boys’ tennis (Aug. 10), softball (Aug. 10) and cross country (Aug. 12).

The CHSAA sports calendar is broken down into four seasons: A, B, C and D. Season A will end in October. Due to the projected increase of COVID-19 cases toward the end of the year, Season B — which will include basketball

Roaring Fork School District (RFSD) produced a 14-page rule book for the upcoming “A” season, which mimics CHSAA protocols.

Dominic Yoder, the new athletic director at Roaring Fork High School, recently moved from Michigan for the job and said, “Having the opportunity to take on an athletic administrative role in Colorado has been a lifelong dream,” of his.

Yoder stated that, “Over the summer we went through a three phase plan leading up to the hope of starting full team practices on Aug. 10.” He went on, “Teams

did practice a little bit but mostly in the off-season format during the summer.” However, once the CHSAA sports calendar went out on Aug. 4, it was apparent those team sports they’d been practicing for would be put on hold.

Participants will be required to wear masks when they’re sitting on the bench or not actively participating.

Furthermore, there will be daily screenings and if someone is suspected of having symptoms they’ll have to quarantine for 14 days.

According to the RFSD rule book a, “Daily Symptom Tracker must be completed for all participants, managers and

coaches,” a log of which is to be turned into the athletic director after each practice or competition.

This year’s participation waiver includes an affirmation clause that participants and their parents understand and acknowledge the inherent risks, including that of COVID-19.

RFSD Superintendent Rob Stein understands some people may find it contradictory to begin school sports while academically the district will start out the year with distance learning. To that end Stein assures that both decisions are based on guidance from local and state governments and their respective health departments.

“We are eager to give our kids opportunities to resume normal activities safely such as playing outdoor sports with minimal contact and many safety protocols in place, and we hope that these early opportunities will pave the way to more in-person interaction with our students as the fall unfolds,” Stein stated.

“I’m real optimistic about it,” said Yoder, “I don’t think anything in life right now is normal and for us to expect normalcy is not the reality; what is reality is trying to find a pathway to be successful within the new norms.”

RFSD seeks childcare partner

Roaring Fork School District has issued a Request for Proposals from local organizations to provide staff childcare so that district employees can return to work and launch the school year with distance learning.

The district hopes to receive proposals from multiple organizations located from Silt to Aspen who will be able to take on additional children in their existing programs and also be able to support participation in the district’s distance learning program. Email adavlyn@ rfschools.com with proposals or questions. The first review will begin on Aug. 12 and awards will be made on a rolling basis until all needed spaces are filled.

Free outdoor tutoring

Summit54 announced it is offering a free outdoor tutoring program this fall for Kindergarten through fourth grade students who live within the Roaring Fork School District boundaries. The small group outdoor tutoring program is being offered from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. Monday, Tuesdays and Thursdays Aug. 31 through Oct. 15. Visit Summit54.org to register

How many in your party?

By Tom Mercer Sopris Sun Correspondent The Sopris Sun is conducting a series of interviews with folks you may not have seen in the paper before – a sort of introduction to your neighbors.

Q: Where are you from originally?

A: I was born in Newton, Iowa (the home of Maytag), but grew up in Hudson, Iowa, which had a population of between 2,000 and 3,000.

Q: What originally brought you to Carbondale?

A: My Mom and step-dad both got jobs at Colorado Rocky Mountain School (CRMS). My step-dad was a music teacher at CRMS, and my mom worked there in administration.

So, I’ve been here for 42 years. I went from kindergarten through high school here in Carbondale. It’s been good! My dad lived in a small town in Iowa, so growing up, I spent pretty much every summer in Iowa. He was also a high school teacher, and a wrestling and golf coach.

Q: Where did you attend college?

A: I went to Adams State College down in Alamosa for one year on a track scholarship. I competed in the high jump event. It was kind of interesting because, in college, at 5’ 10”, I was one of the shortest guys out there high jumping. We’d get to some of the track meets and I’d get out there to warm up with the other two high jumpers on the team (who were 6’4” and 6’6”), and I was a five foot, ten inch high jumper, and one of the shortest guys out there high jumping. I just didn’t fit in, but I enjoyed it. I loved that time down at Adams State College. Then, I decided I didn’t want to be four hours from everything, so I transferred to C.S.U. and I finished my degree there.

Q: Do you have any hobbies?

A: I like to fly fish and play golf. My favorite fishing spots are Avalanche

Creek and Thompson Creek. I deal with people all day long, so I’m not going to go up the Frying Pan and have to fight for a spot on the river.

I also play a lot of golf. Those are both my hobbies and recreation Q: What are your favorite books, authors, or musicians?

A: This is going to sound funny, but I grew up around a lot of rap music, so The Beastie Boys were probably my all-time favorite music group. I’ve listened to them my entire life. As for books, the Beastie Boys came out with a book a couple of years ago chronicling their rise to fame, which is kind of amazing because, even though I’m not from the East Coast, their story about growing up in Queens, New York, and working in a predominantly black genre of music - that was fascinating to read about.

Q: Can you tell me something about yourself that might surprise Sopris Sun readers?

A: The fact that I went kindergarten through high school here in Carbondale, and my two daughters have done the same. My daughters have even had three or four of the same teachers that I had when I was in the Carbondale schools. That was kind of cool!

My younger daughter just graduated from Roaring Fork High School in Carbondale during the pandemic, and no one will ever forget that graduation. It was phenomenal. My older daughter was Head Girl and she helped run the event as emcee.

The ceremony took place out in the school parking lot, and everybody sat in their cars with their car radios tuned into KDNK so they could hear the ceremony and speeches.

And the ceremony was followed by a parade downtown. No one will ever forget that graduation! Now my older daughter who assisted with the high school graduation helps me manage The Smithy, and she’s been

Shopping center rezoning continued Staff report The process of redeveloping the Sopris Shopping Center and Sopris Self Storage remains hung up on the first step, after trustees followed the staff recommendation to continue the public hearing to rezone the property.

Longtime property owner Rob Stein (no relation to the school superintendent) urged the board to approve the project.

“At this point, the shopping center is really obsolete and has to be redone,” he said. “I think this is our one opportunity to move forward and do a project that is going to be beneficial to the community and work economically.”

Since the preliminary plans last came before the board, developers relocated and redesigned the common open space, consolidated the commercial space and reduced the number of ground-floor residential units along Highway 133.

Town Planner Janet Buck saw that as progress, but far from a slam dunk.

“Staff remains supportive of the rezoning… but I think that the building still needs some work,” she said.

Roadside waste clutters scenic byway

A berm to block roadside spoils from view remains incomplete, and tensions are high.

Some backstory: In 2007, the Crystal Valley Environmental Protection Association (CVEPA) noticed the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) dumping rockfall and mudslide waste at Placita, a site off the McClure Pass road. The dumping was on public lands, and it concerned CVEPA because it was clearly visible from the highway and threatened the vulnerable Crystal River riparian zones.

“If you see something that doesn’t look right, it’s probably because it’s not, and you need to speak up,” CVEPA President John Armstrong said.

Indeed, the Forest Service was unaware that CDOT had been dumping roadside waste on public lands and ordered them to stop using the Placita site.

In 2009, CVEPA endorsed an alternative to the Placita site. “After a review of candidate sites for the upper Crystal, the inside of the horseshoe turn below the summit of McClure Pass was chosen for the next generation rock dump site,” CVEPA’s website read. This nine acre area is contained and across the highway from the Crystal River, making it less harmful to the environment than the previous dumping spot.

The site, named the Horseshoe Bend, needed an approved management plan and Environmental Assessment (EA) in order to become the new dumping site. This process took until 2016 to complete. A stipulation of the management plan was to decommission and

“When the management plan was finally ratified...we figured that there would be some action,” Armstrong said. “[CDOT built] a little bit of the berm, which is basically a land mound that [goes]... between the highway and the horseshoe dump area.”

According to the management plan, the berm needs to be eight feet tall to adequately block the roadside spoils from view, but CDOT has yet to complete it since starting the project four years ago.

That hasn’t stopped dumping occurring on the site, however. “It’s a phased project. Nowhere in the decision notice or the EA does it state that they have to build the berm entirely prior to starting to utilize that one acre at a time that they’re filling,” Aspen-Sopris District Ranger Kevin Warner said.

“CDOT has not fulfilled their obligation of

completing the berm,” Armstrong said. “They did start it, [but] it’s not to the heights or any of the specifications that are in the management plan.”

He is adamant about the berm being the correct height, as the area is part of the West Elk Scenic Byway — a place where one wouldn’t expect to see discarded waste on the side of the road.

“Last summer I noticed [CDOT] had hauled in dozens of loads of more organic soil... I was encouraged by that,” Armstrong continued, as soil is used to build berms. “Then they just bulldozed it into the other landslide spoils.”

Armstrong contacted the Forest Service to ask about that action, and around the same time, CDOT reopened the original dumping site at Placita. “They started dumping early summer, maybe even late spring of last year. By management plan, that site was to be decommissioned and revegetated,” he said. “I also informed the Forest Service about that and they didn’t know, and they

told [CDOT] to cease the dumping there.”

“On our end, we have worked with [CDOT] recently to ensure that there is no more dumping occurring at the Placita site,” said Warner.

Today, the Horseshoe Bend berm remains incomplete. This June, Armstrong contacted the Forest Service again to tell them CVEPA was disappointed there had been no movement or compliance with the management plan. “We really don’t know what to do next and where the disconnect is. ...We’ve contacted the Forest Service as recently as six weeks [ago], and they said that they were in conversation with CDOT, but still nothing has been done.”

CDOT did not respond to inquiries for this article. “We understand that now it’s the pandemic... we’re sensitive to that, but we really feel that 13 years is too long,” Armstrong said.

His frustration stems from the fact that relatively little effort is needed to complete the project.

“What they need to do is [get] some decent soil, build the berm to the eight foot specified height, and then revegetate it,” Armstrong said.

“We’ve offered to try and get together a volunteer crew for revegetation as well ...The solution is pretty simple.”

Warner said that the berm is “a multi-phase thing [and] we never expected that they would do it all at one time.”

Armstrong stressed the great respect CVEPA has for CDOT and the Forest Service. “What we want to do is work together... and not [have] an antagonistic relationship,” he said. “But we think that it’s time. It’s overtime.”

Reimagining our agricultural future When Jerome Osentowski declared he would build a tropical greenhouse oasis on the rocky slopes of Basalt at 7,200 feet above sea level, people thought he was crazy.

Fast forward to 2020, and Osentowski makes fresh pineapplepapaya smoothies throughout the winter and grosses around $60,000 in tuition fees from the wellattended permaculture courses he teaches every year.

Osentowski’s land is known as the Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute, or CRMPI. When he bought the property in the ‘70s, there was nothing on it. “It was

just a ridge, pinyon and juniper and some scrub oak,” he said. “This whole house was built from the dump.”

Osentowski expanded CRMPI with plenty of volunteer help and scavenging for discarded building materials. The tin that serves as a wall in one of the greenhouses is from the old Carbondale Fire House.

Osentowski invited me to tour his property so I could write an article about permaculture for pandemics.

I was immediately interested, having worked on a farm myself this summer and experienced both the difficulty and importance of practicing agriculture during COVID-19.

I can reference the motif of empty supermarket shelves across the country and the panic that quickly ensued. I can conjure up the uneasiness people felt after realizing how dependent we are on the supermarket and, in essence, the continued success of unsustainable systems.

Often industry will take something that has good intentions and tweak it enough so its original intention becomes unrecognizable.

Organic agriculture rejected the idea of mass industrialized monoculture and its method of distribution—specifically the supermarket, an antithesis of nature and keystone of capitalism. In touring many farms in the valley this summer, I’ve been fascinated with all the people I’ve met and their various pathways to a shared goal of agricultural sustainability.

At Sustainable Settings, I learned about biodynamics, the idea that the lunar calendar influences the days you want to harvest certain crops.

At Rock Bottom Ranch, I saw how chicken tractors followed pasture previously grazed by cattle and sheep in a symbiotic pattern of rotational grazing. And at the Colorado Rocky Mountain School farm where I work, I learned about cover cropping and silage tarps and interplanting and all the small and exciting ways organic agriculture is working to strengthen environmental resiliency.

It would be naive of me to say that our industrial agriculture system can meaningfully change overnight with a few simple shifts. What I do believe, however, is that talking about the change you want to see in the world is a good first step.

“Nature has it figured out,” Osentowski said as he handed me one of his mountain-grown papayas to take home. “Instead of destroying it, let it happen on its own.”

By Geneviéve Joëlle Villamizar A conversation has opened within hunting as more people of infinite diversity have entered its sacred realm: What is an appropriate photograph when we “fill our tags?” “Bag” our animal?

Secure clean food in fair chase for our families?

A thousand words cannot capture the moments after the dust settles, an animal releases its last breath, and a hunter reconciles their new reality.

Let’s be honest here — wherein a Homo sapien takes the life of another sentient being.

Those universally photographed moments encompass three elements: the deceased animal, an alive hunter, and a firearm. From there on, each photo is unique to the hunter.

What those hunting photos say

Facial expression, body language, body in relation to prey, hand placement, a hunter’s attire, the position of the animal, cleanliness of the kill — all these and more indicate so much: a hunter’s self esteem, self discipline, their family or peer culture, food beliefs, respect for other beings, integrity, compassion — or lack thereof.

As a hunter, I stopped taking those photos of myself. For me the celebration would be around my kitchen table with special people. The progression photos of me and mostly deer, some elk, grouse, and pheasants, very clearly show my confusion. And I’m still confused to this day, taking a life for my own. I’m comfortable with this uncertainty, though, because it indicates I’m still learning.

Still discovering. Examining the relationship between me and my food, me and the world and my place in it.

My first animal was a doe.

Having worked so hard through the years and that hunting season for her, my smile was euphoric.

Next, was a cow elk, another first.

Remorse clouded my face. She was a grande dame, the hair upon her breast an aged, shaggy blonde that I had spotted naked-eyed at 400 yards among her herd.

Ensuing ungulates taught me

that I will always cry, taking such a magnificent life. And pray; give thanks. A photograph, to me, captured a wildness snuffed out. Eyes gone flat. The splash of blood, an ending instead of a beginning. I don’t want to document that.

Is this hypocritical, some of us ask? Are we hiding “truth?”

Like many girls, I learned to hunt from men. A friend here. A buddy there. One lucky season, with a mentor. I trundled after them, hanging on their words, studying their actions. Hampered by ill-fitting sales-rack men’s camo and gear, I felt clumsy and uncertain, filled with so many questions, tripping over long pant legs. As a shy person acquiring new competencies, I often felt eclipsed by more vocal, more dominant, or more experienced hunters. Or in “therapy speak,” I felt “less than.”

Over the years, I’ve come to cherish solitary hunts. I have the bowl of sky to mirror my multitude of emotions. I have canyons, arroyos, mountains and forests to wander about in; nap, sketch, read, or write. I’ve slowly made hunting “mine.” Not what a guy tells, or a magazine advertises to me. It’s just Pollyanna me out there, blowing my mind in the natural world. And at times,

this leads to deeply intimate, direct experience with animals.

Sometimes, taking their life.

I’m an Artemis Ambassador through the National Wildlife Federation, tasked with growing and sustaining an outdoors community for interested female archers, anglers, hunters, and conservationists. We are five ambassadors across Colorado, and 20-30 across the United States. As ambassadors, we are making our mark on what has always been considered a man’s realm.

And we are talking about kill shots. Trophy shots. Grip and Grins. And we are asking ourselves questions, too, as we make way for oncoming generations of future sporting folks— women, children, black people, brown people, vegetarians, poets, chefs.

What would a hunting culture led by women look like, sound like?

Watching a First Lite gear video targeting women this week, I killed the sound immediately— hard driving, ripping guitars blasted at me, akin to the majority of extreme sports videos.

Throughout all of it, we maintain clear standards, upholding the values and ethics of the National Wildlife Federation. We espouse fair chase. We shun needless violence towards animals or people. And as a women’s group redefining hunting for ourselves, we’re looking at how we choose to portray our experiences. We want to be honest about killing to eat.

But will that be in the form of a photo? A video? Paintings? New interpretations of “the mount?”

Poems? Stories?

A picture might be worth 1,000 words, my Artemis mentor tells me, but no thousands of words can possibly portray what is captured in the photograph of hunter and prey.

OBITUARY

Rita Bejarano Nov. 5, 1946 - July 24, 2020

Rita Bejarano was born Nov. 5, 1946 in Taos, New Mexico to Helen and Frank Sandoval and passed away July 24, 2020 as a result of a C.T. scan that resulted in a severe stroke.

She made her own decision to leave us.

Her life was full and she could not accept anything less.

All who knew her loved her, and there were many in the near-50 years that she lived in the Basalt and Carbondale area.

She is survived by her sons, Lawrence and

Christopher Bejarano; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; daughters-inlaw Kandi, Lisa and Toni Bejarano (all of the Grand Junction, Paonia and Hotchkiss area); sister Becky Hutton of Carbondale and sister Dolores Montoya of Las Vegas.

Rita was number 10 in a family of 11 — five sisters and five brothers. Dolores and Becky are the last two.

She will be missed by a mountain of family and friends.

The death of a loved one costs enough. The Sopris Sun is happy to publish local obituaries of a reasonable length, including a picture, for free.
