Director’s Message Dear Carbondale Citizens, This will be my last message to you as I’m stepping down on February 3rd and retiring after almost 16 years with the Town of Carbondale. I’ve been in the parks and recreation profession since 1975, and after 42 years it’s time to practice what I’ve been preaching...that you’re never too old to play! Now I can spend 100% of my time pursuing recreational opportunities and dreams both here and throughout the country.

My time here in Carbondale has been an amazing experience! I have been thinking of all that happened during my tenure and what we have accomplished. When I started here in 2001, I could not have imagined the recreational facilities the Town and community would have today.

Working closely with many of you citizens, non-profits and civic organizations, and with the many dedicated Parks & Recreation Commission volunteers and Town Trustee board members has been one of the great joys of my life. I say that in all sincerity because it was remarkable people within the community that came to me to discuss their visions for pursuing a recreation center; renovating and lighting the Gus Darien Rodeo Arena; developing a dog park and nature park; acquiring the Roaring Fork River Gateway RV Campground & Boat Ramp; constructing new tennis courts and an all-weather synthetic running track for the high school; building a skateboard park, bike park, and Demeter Community Garden; building the bread oven shelter; expanding our bike/pedestrian trail network; and many other projects and programs. It has been a privilege to seek, gain approval and be trusted by town boards and commissions to complete these projects.

As I leave the position of Parks & Recreation Director, my hope is that the Town will continue to pursue and build for the future important recreational needs of the community that have been laid out within the recommendations of the 2015 Parks, Recreation & Trails Master Plan.

Bringing the dreams and desires of perpetual recreation infrastructure and programming to the citizens of Carbondale has been and will always be a challenge with limited town financial resources. The best part of my job was seeking and receiving outside grant funding for recreation and park projects, and after completing them, seeing the impact that they had on the lives of citizens like yourself. There are still great opportunities and important things ahead that the Town of Carbondale has plans to achieve for you.

I will treasure the continuing friendships of many past and present town colleagues and, of course the extraordinary citizens of Carbondale I’ve come to know. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to have served as your director of parks and recreation and will continue to live and be part of this great community we can all call home.

Motion Mondays

This action packed program is for preschoolers who want to ride!

Bring your own scooter, strider, razor, trike, bike or any other wheeled contraption to the gym. We will set up fun activities and the bounce house. Parents must remain in attendance at all times.

One half of the basketball gymnasium will be available for Open Gym activities on Early Release Wednesdays.

Sport options will include basketball and indoor soccer.

All climbers must undergo an initial Safety Orientation prior to accessing the wall. This orientation is a review of wall regulations and equipment, knot tying, belaying, rope management skills, use of technical equipment and climbing commands. Climbers must be certified in one of two levels prior to using the wall.

Level One Certification is the validation for using the climbing wall for bouldering, auto-belay and top rope belaying.

Ice Rink Information 4th St. Plaza Rink

A downtown ice rink will again be available for family skating this winter at the corner of 4th St. and Main St. in downtown Carbondale. This rink will be open from 12 noon to 9 pm daily, ice permitting. The season will be short so make sure you don’t miss it.... come skating. Go to our website or facebook page for updated ice information. FYI-No stick sports are allowed on this sheet of ice. Hockey and Broomball must take place at the Gus Darien Ice Arena. There is a selection of ice skates for rent for $3/day or $10/for 3 days (must visit the CRCC at 567 Colorado Ave., only 2 blocks away, for rentals).

Family Skate Night

Community Skate Party Come on down to the 4th Street Plaza Ice Rink on January’s First Friday for a free Community Party. We will have a fire pit, roast hot dogs and marshmallows, and drink hot chocolate. Ice skate rentals will be available at the Rec Center until 9 pm.

Gus Darien Ice Arena

We will be operating the large ice arena located on County Road 100, the home of the summer rodeo. Ice skate rentals are available at the CRCC in downtown Carbondale. We have flood lights to illuminate the ice until 9 pm. The ice rink is reserved Wednesday and Friday nights from 6:0010:00 pm for the Carbondale Broomball League and reserved 4:00-7:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays during January and February for Youth Hockey classes. Ice Arena Rentals

The Gus Darien Ice Arena is available for private rentals—schedule a birthday party, holiday party, or just hockey time. Please call 970-5101279 for more information, including available times and dates, rates, and other details.

Pick up Hockey

Pick up hockey is allowed at the Gus Darien Ice Rink on a first come first serve basis unless there is a Town Recreation Program scheduled. Please respect other skaters and adjust the goal setup to accommodate other rink users. Pick up hockey is not allowed to supersede other uses except during the following times: Tuesday, Thursday, & Sunday 7:30-9:00 pm.

Gus Darien Ice Arena Programs Introduction to Ice Hockey for Kids

This is an introductory program for ice hockey for boys and girls. These lessons are for those who have some skating skills with little or no hockey skills. Participants will develop their skills and learn the basics of the game in a recreational environment. Hockey helmets with full face mask and an appropriately sized hockey stick required for all participants.

Shin pads, elbow pads, hockey pants and hockey gloves are highly recommended. **Coaches are needed for this program. If you are interested, call Eric 970-510-1277.

The Recreation Department will continue its very popular adult broomball league for ages 18 and up. Broomball sticks are provided. Come have a laugh, get a good workout, or sit by the ďŹ re and cheer on the teams. Helmets are REQUIRED & HEAVILY ENFORCED. People not wearing helmets will not be allowed to play. Kneepads, elbow pads, and/or wristguards are highly recommended, as are helmets with full face masks for the goalies.

Winter Adult Leagues 2017 Winter Adult COED Volleyball Leagues

Bump, set, and spike your way into our 4 on 4 Winter Volleyball League! This league is fast-paced and actionpacked, offering nothing but a great time to those involved. The league will consist of regular season play, followed by a single-elimination or double-elimination tournament (depending on how many teams register) to determine the league champion. The league is selfofficiated with teams making their own calls.

Winter Adult Pickleball League

Returning for 2017 will be our Winter Adult Pickleball League!

Starting on Sunday, Feb. 12th, we will compete for 8 weeks from 5-8 pm. Each week you will have the opportunity to play 5 doubles matches to 11. While you may be playing doubles, your point total will be recorded as an individual. To encourage fair play, you can only partner with another individual once per evening.

That means each night you will have 5 different partners. This will be a great way to meet others in the Pickleball community and help grow the sport!

New Cooking Class Series 2017 Winter and Spring Cooking Class Series

We are excited to bring cooking classes to the Recreation and Community Center! Come learn different methods to take your summer and fall harvests and make them last throughout the winter. Students will have the option of taking additional classes in the Spring to become an instructor to help these classes continue throughout the year.

Jams, Jellies and Fruit Spreads

Monday, January 30th, 6:00—9:00 pm Learn how to make and preserve flavorful summer fruits or an amazing pepper jelly. Class covers water bath canning basics to ensure safe preservation.

Monday, February 27th, 6:00—9:00 pm Pie fillings are an excellent way to preserve an abundance of fruit. Learn current researchbased recommendations for making great pie fillings that can be water bath processed safely.

Overcoming the Fear of Pressure Canning Monday, March 27th, 6:00—9:00 pm

Learn how a pressure canner works as we walk through each step involved in safely canning vegetables, meats and seafood. (Optional: Bring your canner lid for testing of the dial gauge.)

Fermenting Vegetables

Monday, April 24th, 6:00—9:00 pm Natural fermentation is one of the oldest means of food preservation. Learn the science of preparing and storing sauerkraut and other fermented vegetables safely in this hands-on workshop.

Whole Grain Bread Baking

Monday, May 22nd, 6:00—9:00 pm Discover how simple and economical it is to make healthy whole grain breads. The workshop includes samples, recipes and tips for whole grain baking at altitude. Bring a 3-4 quart container for mixing dough to take home.

Join Carbondale Recreation for its Annual Easter Egg Hunt at Sopris Park. Please arrive promptly because the hunt only lasts a few minutes and starts at 10 am sharp. And be sure to bring your own basket to collect the eggs. Participants will be divided up according to age. Registration for the Easter Basket Raffle will begin at 9:30 am, and winners will be drawn following the Hunt.

The average team will walk or run anywhere from 3-6 miles in the two hours allotted to find all the clues—it all depends upon how well you solve the clues and map out your route! From Sopris Park use your clues to find photo stops around town. Snap a team photo and be creative to gather points.

Spring Into Fun at the Family Block Party on Carbondale’s First Friday in May. Enjoy playful activities for the kiddos courtesy of the Carbondale Recreation, arts and crafts by the Children’s Rocky Mountain School and meet some of Colorado Animal Rescue’s sweetest adoptables! Lifeguard Certification

The lifeguard blended learning training course provides participants with all the skills necessary to become a certified lifeguard for American Red Cross Facilities. All training materials will be included with the course and participants must pass each section with a minimum of 80% or higher to become certified.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS FRIDAY, APRIL 14. All teams are first come first serve.

If a team fills before the registration deadline all additional sign-ups will be placed on a waitlist. So sign up early to ensure a spot on the team! Team maximums will be strongly enforced. Practice and game schedules will be dependent on coaches’ availability and will be set in May. Practices and regular season games will occur during the week, but tournament games may be played on Saturdays. All communication for all teams will be conducted via email. NEW FOR 2017! Monday nights will be ladies’ night at the CRCC! Bump, set, and spike your way into our 4 on 4 Women’s Volleyball League!
