- Frankie Harrington and Lucas Schramer
Soccer: The 2016 Roaring Fork High School boys’ soccer team season is underway with the new leadership of team captains Lorenzo Andrade and Axel Palomera. Thus far, both captains are very pleased with the team, which currently has a 7-3 record. “We have a very promising team with an extraordinary skill set,” says captain Andrade. returned to the team after being out last season due to an injury. He is currently the Ram’s top scorer with 8 goals and 9 assists at this point in the season. Palomera is the other senior captain of this year’s team. “We have already overcome many challenges. I like where the team is heading,” comments Palomera. Palomera’s season is also off to an excellent start with 5 goals and 4 assists. Palomera explains the significance of being a team captain. “Being
Volleyball: Returning captain, Ashley Hall teams up with new captain, Lily Ramos as they lead their team into the 2016 volleyball season. The two seniors reveal their hopes for the season, as well as their duties as team leaders. The team already has more wins than all of last season, and many of these wins are due to the leadership these two bring to the team. Hall comments on the team dynamic. “I think a lot of [the team’s success] is because the players have trust in us. If I ask someone to move positions, they listen. I think a lot of that comes from trust.” Hall says. Hall is a third year captain and an experienced leader. She started on J.V. her freshman year, made varsity sophomore year and became captain right away. Captain Lily Ramos, believes that being team captains with Hall has helped her. “It’s very fun. You really get to be a leader and that is a really great learning experience,” Ramos says. “But it is a big role. You always must keep the team together, through the ups and downs, and keep everything in line. I always try to make sure to motivate the team because once one person gets upset, they slowly bring everyone else down. When that happens, it becomes hard to win games.” Coach Katie Mccullugh, who is also a math teacher at RFHS, states that captains were chosen based upon their leadership skills and the ability to take initiative during tryouts, open gym, and the first week of practice. According to Mccullugh, captains hustle on the court, at practice, and in games, while also encouraging the team. Mccullough states, ¨The captains are very hardworking and super
captain brings a lot of pressure. You rub off on everyone.” The captains have an important responsibility as leaders to the team that they must take seriously. The two reiterated that the difficulty that comes along with their role is evenly matched by the reward. “Being a captain is fun,” Palomera laughs. “You get to guide the players.” Andrade and Palomera both earned places on the varsity soccer team freshman year. “The captain’s journey is like a cycle,” Andrade added. “You look up to previous captains, and you try to assimilate their qualities, and eventually pass them onto other people.” The captains described themselves as a mix between a coach and a player. “We’re that connection that brings the coach and the players together,” Andrade remarks. “As much as they respect coach Nick, the players respect us like coaches,” adds Palomera. Varsity coach Nick Forbes has high remarks for the captains. “These two are captains because everyone looks up to them as a good example. These two are what everyone else should want to be.” When asked how they have been doing so far, he replied, “They’ve been really responsible. If I show up late, I know Axel and Lorenzo will have them warmed up and ready.” Forbes concludes with “They’ve been leaders on and off the field and they care about everyone else.” Both captains hope to leave their mark on the school as they continue through their last season at RFHS. “We are always striving to be our best,” Andrade says, “and if we keep up the intensity, playoffs will be well within our reach and possibly even taking the league title.” Andrade and Palomera shine on and off the field. Both are participants in Student Council, and are both Link Leaders. Andrade is also Senior class president. competitive,¨ which definitely shows on the court. When considering what roles the captains have on the team Mccullough adds, ¨They both lead by example. They are not ones to yell at their team. They’re the ones who are on the floor the absolute most. They play almost the entire game if not all of it. They keep the energy up when

it needs to stay up but at the same time, if we’re losing or the energy is down they’re the ones to make a good play and turn it around.¨ Both senior captains have already had an exciting season with a current record of 6-2. They both hope that their last year playing for the Rams will be their best. “We just have to keep getting wins. With the start we have, we hope to continue building on success,” Hall comments.
