Manager’s Message Summer is gone, whisked away, just out of reach of our outstreached arms, as if we weren’t even paying attention. Brrrr! That summer list we all have in our heads, you know the one...”this summer we are going to.........,” is left unfulfilled. Although we may have ticked off a few of the must-do summer ativities, the list somehow grows longer with each concerted effort to cross something off of it. But I say, thank goodness, because that is what keeps us going, and makes us happy to be here. Next summer we are going to.......... ! The kids are back in school, yet they are my gauge that all hope is not lost in a change of season. Their freedom now regulated and narrowed into afterschool activities and the need to be prolific weekend wariors. I observed hundreds of them roaving around town in wild packs last weekend, getting that fleeting summer sense of freedom back, riding their bikes, playing in the parks, fishing rods in hand along the river banks, soaking up that last bit of summer sun and warmth. Although tragic, we are resigned to the fact that summer is impermanent, and that the fall and winter seasons are upon us. The weather pushes us inside or bundles us up with layer upon layer. We stare into this forced transformation with disdain, but luckily, we slowly embrace the fall (and the big winter to follow) with anticipation and excitement. No matter your age, you have the ability to benefit from this seasonal transformation. The Carbondale Recreation Department gives you plenty of opportunities to not disappear behind closed doors, bundled up and waiting for the spring to come. Preschoolers, no need to pout because your favorite park playground is cold and wet, come inside where our gym becomes your new playground with our Motion Mondays and Wild and Wacky Wednesdays. We can fill school-age kids with outside fun with our Flag Football and our North Face Bike Park and Skateboard Lessons, or they can come inside after school and play volleyball, dodgeball, or sign up to compete on a winter basketball team or take part in our ongoing SAHN Tae Kwon Do Classes. Climbers can take one of our numerous Youth Climbing Classes or just pull on some plastic and maintain their form for ice ascents or lofty spring projects. For the adults, our gymnasium offers weekly drop-in Basketball, Soccer and Pickleball. Join a team for our fall and/or winter Volleyball Leagues or hit the ice with our Broomball League. Seniors can continue their quest for health and wellness with our SilverSneakers program, our new Silver&Fit membership option, ongoing Tai Chi, Chair Yoga and specialty class options and excursions. Do not go lazy into the dark winter, heat up the cold with a plethora of excercise options, including ski conditioning and indoor cycling specialty classes. We always ramp up our fitness classes included in your membership in the fall and winter. So buy a pass and take a class! Don’t forget to fill in that blank on your fall and winter tick list. Before you know it it will be spring and summer and you will be strong, happy and ready for your next adventure. No need to say thanks, it is what we do, just know that you’re always welcome. Sincerely, Eric Brendlinger
