2016 spring sports have arrived, and the Roaring Fork High School Girls’ Soccer season is off to a slow, but good start. So far the girls have won games against the Rifle Bears and the CRMS Oysters and lost against the Aspen Skiers, Eagle Valley Devils, and the Coal Ridge Titans. The program is starting off the season with a new head coach, Nick Forbes. Assisting coach Forbes is Jackie Vossler, an English Language Learner (ELL) teacher at Roaring Fork High School. Both coaches helped coach the RFHS Boys’ Soccer Program, and know the game well. With former head coach, Heather Fox leaving, it
left Forbes with some big shoes to fill for the 2016 season. The returning girls are adjusting well to the loss of Fox and look forward to what the new season has in store for them. As of now, the new coach change does not seem to be a problem, according to junior, Corey Johnson. She was asked how the new coach change has been, and what she is looking forward to most. “The new coach change was a very smooth transition, and did not seem to affect us in a negative way at all. Both coaches are experienced, and know what they are doing on the field, which really helps us out. The coaches are really working us, so

we can be the best we can be.” Johnson says she looks forward to playing, having a good season, and beating rival teams, Basalt and CRMS. When asked about the challenges the girls have already faced this season sophomore Lindsy Vega said that, “the biggest challenge so far has been bonding as a team, and learning how to play together.” In regards to what the team an-
False Alarm at RF - Caitlin OʼGorman
On Wednesday April 6th, 2016 the final period of the school day was interrupted by a fire alarm. Students and teachers of Roaring Fork High School filed out of the school, where they waited for approximately an hour. This evacuation was the result of a burst water pipe in the Auxiliary Gym sprinkler system. The fire and police departments were called to the scene and all
students were asked to leave school early. The cause of the malfunction occurred when a group of students were playing in the auxiliary gym. According to Kathy Alcala, the registrar at RFHS, “the way that the sprinklers work is that they have a little cage over them to protect them. One of the boys kicked a ball and when it hit the sprinkler it caused it to malfunction.” Though the damages were restricted to the auxiliary
gym, administration and law enforcement felt that, with the sprinklers releasing black acrid water (a pungent smell that is irritating to nose and eyes), it was better to take all necessary precautions. While the extent of the damage still has yet to be determined, the staff and students at Roaring Fork High School are very grateful that the police and the fire department responded quickly to make sure that everyone was safe.
ticipates being their biggest challenge for the season she believes that, “The biggest challenge for the season is going to be coming together as a team.” Although, there are going to be some bumps in the road Vega is ready for a good and fun season full of wins. The new coaches and all of the girls that are out there this season are looking forward to a good season of playing and competing as a
team. They are hopeful that they will come out with a lot of wins, and play to their potential on the field. You can come out to support the girls as they play the Basalt Longhorns on Saturday, April 16th. The varsity game is set to begin at 11:00am, and Junior Varsity will follow at 1:00pm. Their next home game is April 23 vs. CRMS, with varsity at 11:00 and JV at 1:00.
