Last year, I wrote my publishers letter about all of the changes taking place in our lives, in the philanthropic world, and how nonprofits needed to pivot in order to survive. Little did I realize then how many people, donors, economies and dayto-day life would be impacted. Just recently I checked in with my colleagues at Gladitood who pioneered online giving and discovered that they had closed their doors. Was it caused by the pandemic? No, it was the result of Facebook being forced to change their advertising and privacy policies so that nonprofits can’t target people with ads based on their interests including key issues and nonprofits.

I understand protecting us from invasive ad practices, but from nonprofits too? If you’re interested in online fundraising or giving, check out kindly.org.

While COVID-19 has changed so much, the reality is many things have changed this year, and will continue to change. Life as we knew it just two years ago is fundamentally different than it is today.

Let’s not forget nonprofits are a large sector of our economy, they do the work that government can’t or won’t, and they are now harder pressed to raise money, appeal to new and younger audiences, find new employees, or even meet in person with their donors. While many are doing just fine financially, 2022 is going to be tough without PPP loans from the government to make up the gap in revenue. If you think your favorite nonprofits are out of the woods because they survived 2021, guess again.

2022 will be the year many of the weaker nonprofits fail. It will be harder for them to reach their constituency, retain their best talent, and raise funds.

While this will be sad for the people and dreams left behind, this may be the market correction that many philanthropy experts have said was needed for the past 10 years. St. Louis alone has some 70,000 nonprofits and many do not have the funds, leadership or clarity of mission to stand apart and remain viable. As donors, this is the year to support the strongest, encourage the weaker to join forces with others (dare I say merge), and give as always until it hurts.

The work of Maxine Clark and Bob Fox at Delmar DivINe, the Brown School of Social Work, and Saint Louis Community Foundation is more important now than ever. Helping nonprofits think and act like well-oiled machines, knowing when to merge or acquire, how to redistribute the board resources to the ones most likely to thrive, and do this all in a way that is positive, sensitive and accretive to the nonprofits left standing.

If this pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that we need to make hard decisions that generate the greatest good. The fact remains, there is more need for philanthropy than ever before, but if it is managed in a fragmented way, it’s hard

to make an impact. While I am sure the Kranzbergs or Ferrings, the Hillmans or Bob Clark, Michael Staenberg or the Sinquefields, and of course my friend Karen Kalish support a diverse group of nonprofits near and dear to them and their families, they have focused their giving for years on the arts, mental health, underserved populations, the building arts, the Jewish community or social equity and inclusion, and they have done much more than support nonprofits so they can fight another day – or year. They have made a lasting impact on these organizations and given them the resources and tools to thrive for generations.

If giving to nonprofits is what you enjoy most about this time of year, make sure to give, but don’t be afraid to ask the tough questions: • Does the nonprofit have the right board that looks like the community, and all give?

• Does it have the right staff meaning are "the right people in the rights seats on the bus?"

• Does it have a program that moves the needle? Does it make an impact, not just a bunch of numbers of how many books they give out, or meals they serve?

• Is it financially healthy and sustainable?

Does it have more money and a bigger budget every year?

• Does it have a culture of learning? Does both the board and the staff really understand and know about the problem the nonprofit has come into existence to do?

• Data data data - is there internal data? Does it have an external evaluator that measures the smart goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and anchored within a Time Frame.

• Does it have partnerships and collaborations with other nonprofits and organizations? As Karen Kalish says often, one nonprofit cannot do "it" alone.

So, I hope you will continue to stay involved and give as much as you can. But I encourage you to help make 2022 a transformative year, to help nonprofits get stronger, partner and/or merge. The more we can use our hearts – and our heads – the more effective our generous community can be.

Readers of this magazine know the value of planning for the future. Charities enrich our communities by helping those in need, creating opportunities for the next generation, funding medical breakthroughs, supporting the arts, and much more. There are probably several causes that you hold dear. It might be the struggle against a disease that afflicted a loved one. Maybe it’s the college that helped you launch a successful career. Or a group that’s having a positive impact on your neighborhood.

Each of these causes is intrinsically worthy, so when you contribute to your favorite charity, you get the proverbial “warm glow” that comes from helping others. But, though it may seem counterintuitive, giving your money away can help you improve your financial situation as well.

Many people think of charitable giving in terms of making cash donations or leaving money in their wills. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Have you benefited from the strong recent performance of the stock market? If so, you may choose to gift appreciated stock or donate required minimum distributions from your individual retirement account. And, depending on your situation, you might also consider such options as donor-advised funds, pooled income funds, charitable remainder trusts, and private foundations.

Although they all provide both income tax and estate tax benefits, each of these strategies is unique – as is your own financial situation. Determining which charitable giving strategies are appropriate for your needs can be difficult. There are many factors to consider. What works for your neighbor may not necessarily be appropriate for you. The only universal rule is that the best time to start is right now.

Sophisticated Details: CCDI stands for Construction Career Development Initiative. CCDI is nonprofit which was founded

by Clayco in 2015 in response to the aftermath in Ferguson, Missouri to provide a program for selected young adults in North County to help them overcome barriers to success, pair them in long-term one-on-one mentorship, offer financial support, and create opportunities for job placement in the construction industry. Clayco’s vision and ultimate goal with CCDI is to support workforce diversity and bridge the gap in workforce development. Over the past 6 years, CCDI has grown Beyond the Walls of Clayco to include many partnerships in the St. Louis community with school districts, workforce development programs and general contractors and subcontractors. Together, we can #BuildTheFoundationForChange.

Sophisticated Connections: We work closely with local school districts in the North County and St. Louis City region as well as workforce development programs like St. Louis Job Corps and our vision is that through these relationships, CCDI students will learn about design and construction, receive exposure to job opportunities in the industry and create career paths for themselves, opportunities for college scholarships and promising futures. We offer financial support with "Build Our Future" college scholarships as well as tool and transportation assistance for students who enter employment post-high school. Since 2015, we have awarded 34 college scholarships, assisted 8 graduates with purchasing a vehicle and helped over 120 young adults with full-time employment.

Many of our students graduate from North Technical High School and St. Louis Job Corps construction programs.

Sophisticated Goals: CCDI’s mission is to bring diversity to the Design and Construction industry by mentoring and exposing minority, underrepresented and under employed men and women to career development in construction. Our four guiding principles include: Real World Experience. We go beyond the classroom. We get students into real-world work environments for the most valuable career training. The second is Building Awareness. Jobs in construction span a diverse range of disciplines and applications. We work to raise awareness of the various trade apprentice programs. The third is Job Placement. With CCDI, training and mentorship are just the beginning. We provide the support and direction students need to successfully find work and support their continued success and retention in the industry. And fourth is Academic Scholarship. We offer students opportunities to continue secondary education at universities and tech schools for degreed career pathways in construction.

Sophisticated Giving: From industry leaders to small business owners, we are always looking for individuals who are passionate about mentoring and preparing the future workforce with knowledge and skills to be successful. We look for motivational and knowledgeable industry guest speakers and volunteers to speak to high school students and attend career fairs. Nationwide the construction industry is thriving, but as Baby Boomers continue to retire, the gap in finding qualified workers to hire continues to increase. Over the past few decades, our society has moved away from the idea of going into a skilled trade as a successful career path as the rise in higher education has become a more popular choice. One of our many goals within CCDI is to help change the stigma of skilled trade careers by cultivating renewed interest in apprenticeship programs and vocational schools with an emphasis on diversity and inclusion in the construction industry. To be able to be successful and continue the growth that we need, we need to be able to improve and change. And that change comes through diversity, equity, and inclusion. CID CENTRAL INSTITUTE FOR THE DEAF Sophisticated Details: CID – Central Institute for the Deaf is both a school for children and a center for developing resources for teachers of the deaf, speech-language pathologists, pediatric audiologists and other professionals.

Using individually tailored hearing technologies, teaching methods and caregiver coaching techniques, we help children who are deaf and hard of hearing learn to listen, talk, read and succeed. We empower families and professionals in St. Louis and worldwide to help children reach their fullest potential.

We serve children from birth to age 12 and their families in St. Louis and surrounding Missouri and Illinois counties. In January 2021, most CID students returned to classroom learning. Small class sizes, frequent handwashing, social distancing and clear masks that enable lipreading remain the norm.

Hearing evaluation and device programming are conducted onsite by world class doctoral-level audiologists.

Learning through play is the hallmark of CID’s Anabeth and John Weil Early Childhood Center, where children ages 3–5 receive one-on-one and small-group lessons, then carry their skills into larger group activities. Listening, speech, social, pragmatic, pre-literacy and pre-academic skills are taught, along with music and movement. The children have so much fun, the casual observer may not realize the sophisticated teaching taking place.

In CID’s Virginia J. Browning Primary School, children ages 5 to 12 continue to build speech and language skills while learning academics, including math, reading, writing, social studies and science. Physical education, music and media classes and extracurricular activities round out the program.

Sophisticated Goals: In 2022, CID’s staff will continue sharing educational strategies with other professionals through online training, downloadable resources and specialized curricula. We also look forward to sharing results of recent research through publications and conference presentations. This year, we expect to engage close to 5,000 professionals, indirectly reaching many thousands of children around the world.

Sophisticated Details: DOORWAYS is an interfaith non-profit organization, which provides housing and related supportive services to improve quality of life and health outcomes for people affected by HIV/AIDS. While founded in 1988 as a hospice providing housing to those dying from HIV, medical advances led to treatment options. DOORWAYS shifted from providing care for the dying to building lives for the living through service-enriched housing to create a stable and safe environment for clients to manage their HIV healthcare.

Medication adherence can render the virus undetectable and untransmittable. Fewer new cases opens the door to the end of HIV for future generations.

DOORWAYS creates this foundation for clients and their families through six housing platforms: a 36-bed assistiveliving facility, 103 residential apartments, emergency housing, a housing program for single-parent families with small children in housing crisis, and rent/utility subsidy programs to prevent homelessness in the Metro and the Outstate areas. We serve 124 Missouri and Illinois counties. Empowerment programs focus on employment, behavioral health counseling, self-development programming, socialization, plus intensive 1:1 support.

Sophisticated Connections: Our agency’s key connection is with the individuals and family members affected by HIV. In these 33 years, the face of HIV has transformed dramatically, now at epidemic levels among those at the intersection of poverty and homelessness. Depth and breadth of need continue to grow as more and more clients battle mental health and substance use challenges. This combined with the economic impacts of COVID-19—which drove many working poor into homelessness—pushed the agency to new levels of service.

In FY21 (7/1/2020 to 6/30/2021), DOORWAYS assisted a record 3,548 individuals. The number of nights in emergency housing soared 30%, from 20,557 to 26,612. The dollar value of subsidies hit record levels, increasing from $3.0M to $4.3M—a 43% change.

The organization currently serves nearly 1,600 individuals ages 17-90 in 160 Missouri and Illinois zip codes—many of whom live with multiple secondary illnesses in addition to their primary diagnosis.

Veterans have a much higher risk of diabetes incidence, with almost 25% of veterans having diabetes compared with only 10% of the general population. Sophisticated Details: The Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition began in 1989 as an informal network of foster care professionals seeking a solution to a common problem – finding foster parents for the growing number of children in State custody. Since then, we have grown and developed – creating programs to address the most pressing issues in child welfare. Today, the Coalition serves 14 counties in the St. Louis region. Our vision is “For Every Child…A Place to Call Home.” The New York Times and TIME magazine have both featured our groundbreaking work, and more than a dozen sites around the country replicate our recruitment programs.

In addition, the opioid epidemic has created a need for even more foster parents because hundreds of more children have come into care. The Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition works to find and train forever families for children in foster care to help secure a stable, happy future for them.

HARVEY KORNBLUM JEWISH FOOD PANTRY (HKJFP) of transportation to obtain food. As the largest food pantry in the region, the HKJFP serves individuals from 4,400 households each year (more than 6,000 clients each month), most living in St. Louis County.

HKJFP clients come from 76 different zip codes throughout St. Louis City and County, with a significant population living in the most under-resourced neighborhoods of North St. Louis County. Eighty-five percent (85%) of all households served at the pantry have incomes below the federal poverty level. Thirty-eight percent (38%) of clients are children through age 18, and twenty-two (22%) are adults over the age of 60.

Sophisticated Details: The Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry (HKJFP) is the largest food pantry in St. Louis County, serving more than 15,000 individuals each year. The pantry provides at least 10 days of food to more than 6,000 children, adults and seniors every month, inclusive of age, race, religion, ethnicity, ability, gender identity/expression, and sexual orientation. Staff and volunteers work with clients to identify additional areas of need and provide referrals and on-site services to address issues beyond hunger.

The HKJFP alleviates hunger by providing food to individuals and families living in households with low incomes. Using the Client Choice model, guests shop for themselves and select the foods that support their family’s unique preferences, nutritional needs and dietary requirements. A staff of 12 and a volunteer workforce of more than 200 people ensure its smooth operations.

Sophisticated Goals: In 2020 the HKJFP served a total of 21,500 individuals, a 30% increase over the prior year. The need for food has continued to remain high throughout 2021 as individuals and families continue to face financial challenges.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we adjusted our operations to meet local and regional health and safety guidelines, while working to serve the growing needs of our community. We shifted to a drivethrough food distribution model, which remains in place currently, which follows physical distancing guidelines and streamlines food distribution. This makes our process more efficient and allows us to serve more people. HKJFP continues to provide at least 10 days of food per month to all pantry guests.

The HKJFP will continue to provide a consistent source of nutritious food to children, adults, and seniors living in households with low incomes throughout our community. With your support, we will be able to meet the ongoing need throughout 2022.

THE TEACHER HOME VISIT PROGRAM HOME WORKS! has trained 2,850 teachers who have made over 30,000 home visits in 116 early childhood, elementary, middle, and high schools in urban, suburban, and rural districts in Missouri, including charter schools in St. Louis. Through our programs, teachers and parents come together as partners to collaborate to support student learning. Teachers establish and build relationships with parents and families, and as parents get to know and trust the teachers, they are more comfortable sharing information about their children and reading to them at home.

Sophisticated Details: Too many children enter school not ready to learn and never catch up resulting in increased rates of school failure, lifetimes of hardships, and never reaching their full potential. Too many families are unaware of the importance of reading and talking with children from birth, daily attendance at school, and stressing the importance of education because they did not experience these behaviors growing up.

The mission of HOME WORKS! is to partner with underserved schools to build their capacity to engage families for student success. We train, support, and pay teachers in lowperforming schools to make home visits (virtual and in-person) and lead parent-teacher workshops to provide strategies to improve the academic achievement, attendance, and behavior of struggling students.

Sophisticated Connections: The need for new treatments and cures for neurodegenerative diseases is tremendous. In recent decades, medical science has produced remarkable advances, and we are able to enjoy longer, healthier lives. But aging is also a challenge, and today, close to six million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease alone. By 2050, this number could rise as high as 18 million. Today, more than 16 million Americans provide unpaid care for people with neurological disorders. At the Hope Center for Neurological Disorders at Washington University, translational, collaborative research leads to swifter results; fundamental discoveries about one neurological disease lead to treatments and cures for others.

Sophisticated Details: We improve the quality of life for individuals with neurological disorders by funding fundamental research to find cures, providing HOPE to everyone afflicted with or connected to a neurological disease.

Hope Happens (formerly ALS Hope - the James Maritz/Chris Hobler Foundation) was established in 2004 by Chris Hobler, who saw his diagnosis of ALS in 2001 as an opportunity to lead the fight against all neurodegenerative disorders. The Hope Center was established in January 2005 as a partnership between Hope Happens and Washington University School of Medicine. The Center's innovative, team-oriented approach combines core laborator y facilities and collaborative sharing of scientific information, equipment and data. Since 2005, the Center has grown tremendously.

More than 800 scientists from 24 different Washington University departments, St. Louis University, and the St. Louis College of Pharmacy are now working collaboratively to translate research into new treatments and cures for neurological disorders.

Hope Center scientists seek new treatments and cures for neurodegenerative disorders like ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and stroke, plus brain and spinal cord injury, and many others.

For example, this year we had great news for brain tumor detection: A team of researchers led by Hope Center member Hong Chen, PhD has developed a noninvasive diagnostic method that may one day replace a brain tissue biopsy with a simple blood test in Glioblastomas. children and their parent. Today, we are only hosting 1-3 per month. It is sad when we have to tell a child, they can’t have a party. Children don’t understand the stress adults are currently under. Luckily, we have other birthday options available to help create a better birthday memory. Our goal is to continue to offer our services in all homeless and domestic violence shelters in the Missouri and Southern Illinois areas within the next three years. We would also like to expand our birthday options to ensure we are meeting the needs of all children in shelter. We currently serve 19 shelters and two school districts (as of November 2021).

Sophisticated Details: The mission of It’s Your Birthday, Inc. is to create fun and memorable birthday experiences for children in homeless and domestic violence shelters. We understand this is a very difficult time for the family. Through research, we have learned children who are homeless need to have a feeling of being cared about. By providing birthday options for the mom or the child to select, we show we care about them on their special day.

• Birthday Party: We will plan and decorate a room within the shelter with a theme requested by the mother or child. The hosted party includes cupcakes, ice cream, juice, and other yummy treats. During the party, the children are provided the opportunity to select a fun decorated treat bag to stuff with chips, candy, and toys. The fun continues with minute-to-win-it games, a craft, or entertainment by a magician or balloon artist.

The laughter is heard throughout the shelter. The birthday child(ren) are treated extra special with a happy Birthday Build-a-Bear or gift cards to a retailer or fast food restaurant.

• Birthday-in-a-Box: We will learn what the child likes and provide a box (decorated by volunteers) with a Happy Birthday Build-a-Bear, toys and a gift card from Schnucks Markets for the mom to purchase a special cake, ice cream, juice or the child’s favorite yummy snacks. If the birthday child is older, we provide him/her with several gift cards for retailers and fastfood restaurants near the shelter. This allows them to have a special treat on their day. We intentionally provide enough to allow sharing with their family and/or friends. The birthday child is overjoyed when they receive their box of goodies.

• Birthday-in-a-Class: We will provide store-bought cupcakes for the child to share with his/her classmates on their birthday. The child is told the cupcakes are from their parent. This allows the parent to receive the credit for the great birthday memory. When the child returns from school, he/she says, “Thanks, Mom!” • Birthday Surprise: We will offer the mom the opportunity to select a gift for their birthday child from our Amazon Wish List. If the mom or the child prefers an item that is not on our list; as long as it’s within budget, they can select it. We will schedule the gift to ship from Amazon directly to the shelter to allow the mom to wrap it and gift it to the child. Both mom and child are happy to receive the exact gift they may have wanted.

• Happy Born Day: We will offer the new mom the opportunity to select a gift for the newborn from our Amazon Wish List.

If the mom prefers an item that is not on our list; as long as it’s within budget, they can select it. We will schedule the gift to ship from Amazon directly to the shelter. Providing these items are very helpful; as giving birth while in a shelter can add to a currently stressful situation.

Sophisticated Connections: The community loves birthdays!

Currently, we operate 100% with volunteers and great partners.

The collaboration with Maxine Clark, Sammy J Balloons, Abra-kid-Abra, Schnucks Markets, Panera, HiCo Balloons, Mission Taco, and High Pointe Drive-In have made it possible for us to provide a better birthday memory to more than 1,500 children in shelters in the St. Louis and Metro East areas since 2014. We invite all those in the shelter to join in the birthday fun. This makes for a great family affair in a time of crisis.

Serving children from toddlers to teens, JSL’s Education Department extends beyond our traditional musician training into music appreciation for young audiences and groundbreaking music motor therapy. In addition to a performance and lecture series and a book club, JSL partners with other arts organizations to produce cross-genre programming that exposes new audiences to jazz.

Because we had an existing infrastructure to assess needs, we were able to quickly determine where to put those dollars to best use. Meanwhile, our core work has continued, supporting and bolstering more than 80 organizations and programs in the St. Louis area.

Highlights have included creating a new Center for Legacy Giving, investing in a new collaborative initiative for all 10 early childhood programs in the community, and recently obtaining nearly $500,000 in security grants for ourselves as well as five other organizations.

Beyond our individual family grants, we have several community outreach programs which impact the larger congenital heart defect community specifically supporting nursing moms, physical therapy, art therapy, literacy, and grief support.

Sophisticated Details: At Mighty Oakes Heart Foundation we passionately want families facing congenital heart defects to have the freedom to be a family and have hope amidst the chaos, and are working to achieve this vision by supporting heart families financially, emotionally, and in ways unique to their needs.

Sophisticated Goals: On a daily basis we are working towards this goal by identifying families in need and offering support. Typically, financial support is offered when children are hospitalized (awaiting surgery, recovering from surgery, or receiving live saving interventions). We know that the best medicine anyone (especially a child) will receive is the loving presence of their family, so we don’t want parents to rush back to work if they don’t have to. Instead we identify financial stresses for each individual family (typically rent, mortgages, utility bills, car payment, travel and medical expenses) and we cover these for the family so that parents can stay with their child at the bedside and shower them with love and affection.

Sophisticated Giving : Donors can support Mighty Oakes in several ways. We are always accepting monetary donations. We love volunteers who will donate time and expertise. We look for specific donations year round to pass along to families, including an adopt a family program at the holidays. Anyone who signs up for newsletters will hear about our needs year round.

MIGRANT AND IMMIGRANT COMMUNITY ACTION PROJECT (MICA PROJECT) the uncertain future of the DACA program, and the everchanging status of the eviction moratorium. The MICA Project is seeking to increase its capacity in 2022 so that it can continue responding to these urgent needs, from the global to the personal.

Sophisticated Details: The Migrant and Immigrant Community Action Project (MICA Project) is a community organization committed to working with low-income immigrants to overcome barriers to justice. The MICA Project utilizes legal services, organizing, advocacy, and education to promote the voice and human dignity of immigrant communities.

The MICA Project is the largest nonprofit in St. Louis that provides representation in immigration matters.

A majority of our clients are women and children who are escaping abuse or other persecution. Our Client Support Services Department ensures that all clients receive traumainformed care and access to community resources.

Sophisticated Goals: The MICA Project is uniquely positioned to intersect with both global and personal crises. From natural disasters to regime changes, world events influence both the source of the immigrants coming to the United States, and the wellbeing of our clients in the United States who might have family and friends in countries experiencing turmoil. Our clients in the United States often face their own challenges, from abusive relationships to eviction.

The MICA Project's ability to move swiftly and responsively in such situations is critical. Sometimes this means facilitating a woman's escape from an abusive household. Other times, it means coordinating evacuations from Kabul, Afghanistan. In August 2021, the MICA Project took on more than 100 cases from Afghanistan in less than a month. Of those, 30 individuals were evacuated, and the remainder are in the process of applying for permission to come to the United States.

But this crisis drastically challenged the MICA Project's capacity, adding an entire caseload's worth of work without any additional staff. At the same time, other crises continue to build - Haitians at the southern border,

Sophisticated Goals: Disabled veterans and first responders face unique physical and psychological challenges as they transition to their new lives. The ALLY Chair—only available through the Segs4Vets program—has become an irreplaceable support device for thousands of former military personnel, facilitating performance of daily activities that would not be accessible otherwise. Since 2005, the Segs4Vets program has been providing ongoing support services to chair recipients, including battery replacement, key fob programming and replacement, warranty services, use and access counseling and advocacy services, and ongoing device assessment to more than 2,000 military families. Our need to invest for the longterm service and maintenance of Segways and ALLY chairs that are currently in circulation with our recipients is a direct result of the heavy use that our devices are receiving, and the average age of our recipients. Most of our disabled veterans are in their late twenties and early thirties now, and were injured in their early twenties. We are committed to ensuring that our veterans will have the leading-edge mobility devices they need to lead fulfilling and purposeful lives.

Despite the poor prognosis, Wolfram syndrome patients around the globe now have hope for better treatment options and services that will allow them to live a life of meaning and impact, all because of the work supported through the mission of The Snow Foundation. It is the Foundation’s “Never lose hope” attitude that has taken this rare disease, on which virtually no clinical research was being done, to supporting clinical trials that show promise of slowing its progression.

Sophisticated Details: The Snow Foundation’s primary purpose is to serve as a collective voice for Wolfram syndrome patients and to raise money to help find a cure. The Snow Foundation has expanded its mission over the last decade and is now leading a global movement of patients, families, doctors, and researchers who work together to improve the lives of everyone affected by Wolfram syndrome. The Foundation’s new vision is bold: a world free of Wolfram syndrome and other rare diseases.

The Snow Foundation accomplishes its mission by making significant investments in promising Wolfram syndrome research, as well as providing critical programs and services that directly improve the lives of patients and their families. The Foundation has three strategic pillars guiding its impact: • Accelerate research into effective treatments for Wolfram syndrome and its various symptoms.

• Connect people affected by Wolfram syndrome with the information and resources they need to live a life of meaning and impact.

• Mobilize the Wolfram syndrome community to generate resources to maximize progress and impact.

Sophisticated Goals: The Snow Foundation provides seed grants to scientists for translational or clinical studies related to development of potential new diagnostics or treatments for Wolfram syndrome. The grant program funded the drugrepurposing clinical trial of Dantrolene sodium at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The trial focused on the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of the drug (visual acuity, neurological functions and remaining beta cell functions).

The Snow Foundation also joined forces with the Association syndrome de Wolfram (France) and the Eye Hope Foundation in (Belgium) to acquire funding for a large-scale project aimed at accelerating the development of new treatments against Wolfram syndrome. The project is coordinated by Professor Timothy Barrett, University of Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Sophisticated Connections: Today, The Snow Foundation is the single largest independent supporter of Wolfram syndrome research in the world, playing a central role in advancing international collaborative research efforts on the disease. It is the hope of the Foundation that by funding this important research, other novel therapies for treating diabetes, vision loss, hearing loss and neurodegeneration might also be identified in the process.

The multi-symptom complexity of Wolfram syndrome necessitates a comprehensive approach that uncovers solutions for everyone. Therefore, the Foundation’s research investment strategy is focused on fueling knowledge, speeding better treatments and symptom management therapies, and driving enhancements in the health care delivery for Wolfram syndrome patients.

The Snow Foundation also encourages the entire Wolfram syndrome community to come together and share common life experiences, education and mutual aid. This includes helping patients through the complexities of finding a healthcare provider, insurance, IEP’s, access to coverage, employment, and emotional support. By providing these critical resources and support services, The Snow Foundation enables Wolfram syndrome patients, their families and caregivers to powerfully advocate for what they need, when and how they need it.

Can you imagine living life with progressive loss of vision, significant hearing loss, loss of balance, bladder issues, a life-long insulin and hormone treatment dependency and the possibility of an early death? This is the experience of more than 30,000 patients around the world living with Wolfram syndrome.

In early childhood, children with Wolfram syndrome first develop insulin-dependent diabetes. Unlike common types of diabetes, these children go on to develop blindness, deafness and other neurologic disturbances. The syndrome is progressive and can lead to loss of sense of smell, problems with balance and coordination, muscle spasms and seizures, urinary tract problems, and irregular breathing. Sadly, there are currently no drug therapies, treatments or cures that exist for Wolfram syndrome. Thus, more than 60% of Wolfram syndrome patients die before age 40.

We’ve had many great people from the community serving on our Board of Trustees including current President Bethe Growe, immediate Past Presidents Laura Silver and Steve Gallant. Our Executive Board members are loyal and dedicated community members such as Alice Handleman, Joan Silber and Ben Weiss. The Light has been telling our community’s stories and sharing our news since 1947.

We’ll be celebrating our 75th anniversary all year round with a retrospective look at the 75 top stories and a celebration this summer for the entire Jewish community.

We will continue our 12-year tradition of honoring the “Unsung Heroes” of St. Louis with a beautiful awards ceremony in the fall.

Sophisticated Details: The year 2022 marks the 75th anniversary of the St. Louis Jewish Light, which is dedicated to telling stories about the people and places in the St. Louis Jewish community. We have existed as a printed paper until recently when we added several digital newsletters to the mix, including a curated daily (except Saturday) communication delivered to our reader’s mailboxes called “Your Morning Light.” All of our products are free to ensure everyone can receive them as we work to inform, inspire, educate and connect the St. Louis Jewish community. The newspaper is mailed out twice a month, and other weekly or frequent e-mail newsletters include one about Celebrations (or Simchas), one for young families, one about Israel, and one with the most recent Obituaries. We take our role as community communicator seriously and believe we are vital to the health and vibrancy of our St. Louis Jewish community. News and feature articles you regularly find in the Light are not ones you can find anywhere else. Not to be able to share them with readers would be an immeasurable loss. It is imperative for the St. Louis Jewish Light to remain robust so that we can continue to tell stories about our unique community to the next generation.

Sophisticated Giving: Many people are unaware that the Light is a wholly independent nonprofit, and that while we are appreciative of some generous funding from the Jewish Federation of St. Louis, we still need to raise over $500,000 annually. ST. LOUIS KAPLAN FELDMAN HOLOCAUST MUSEUM These features will increase the Museum’s appeal as a destination location for St. Louis regional and Midwest residents. The St. Louis Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum will be a valued community resource for decades to come; a place where future generations will learn about the history and lessons of the Holocaust and be empowered to create positive change in their communities.

Currently, the Museum offers a variety of virtual programs and resources for educators, students, and community members while the physical Museum is closed.

In the past year alone, it reached nearly 100,000 people with virtual Museum tours on YouTube. On social media, the Museum received over 4 million views. Virtual events, online student programming, free teacher resources, the Oral History Project, and all current programs allow the Museum to continue its mission while construction is underway.

Sophisticated Details: The St. Louis Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum is one of only 22 Holocaust museums of size in the country and the only Holocaust Museum in the state of Missouri. It is dedicated in honor of the survivors and the memory of the victims. The Museum is undergoing a transformative expansion into a worldclass institution expected to draw 100,000 visitors per year, create jobs, and serve as an educational and training resource for hundreds of regional schools, lawenforcement personnel, and teachers. Construction on the $21 million capital project is underway, with a grand opening anticipated in August 2022.

Sophisticated Goals: The new Museum will be a dynamic, multi-faceted experience that will take visitors through the history of the Holocaust while empowering them to consider how to apply its lessons in their daily lives. An expanded library, archives, and research area will serve as a climate-controlled environment to support scholarly research and maintain more than 12,000 Museum artifacts.

A first-of-its-kind Impact Lab will provide a capstone experience as visitors engage with interactive modules that address one of our society’s core challenges: the reality that too many people have too little positive exposure to those with different perspectives.

ST. LOUIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Annually, the SLSO generates more than $90 million in economic activity, supporting more than 1,000 jobs. It is an anchor of the city’s Grand Center Arts District and a mainstay of the cultural fabric of the region.

Sophisticated Details: The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra is the second-oldest orchestra in the country, led by Music Director Stéphane Denève. THE CLAYCO FOUNDATION JUNETEENTH FUND Sophisticated Goals: The Clayco Foundation’s Juneteenth Fund Advisory Committee hosted its first annual Juneteenth Fund Celebration on June 19th, 2021 at St. Louis’ Mahler Ballroom, donating $140,000 to the cause. The sold-out event was catered by Black-owned businesses and featured African American artists and performers. This event was just the first of many fundraising and outreach opportunities planned for 2022.

Sophisticated Details: The Juneteenth Fund was created by Clayco’s founder, Bob Clark, and is directed by its lead trustee and Clayco partner, Otto Nichols, as part of the Clayco Foundation. The Clayco Foundation Juneteenth Fund is proud to support local and national organizations that further the causes of equality and justice as it specifically pertains to the African American community. We are committed to furthering the awareness of injustices and elevating the voices of those that need it the most. The Juneteenth Fund actively seeks non-profits and individuals that align with our mission for recognition and as fund beneficiaries. We look forward to furthering the relationships with our long-term community partners and building new bridges with emerging non-profits and organizations.

Sophisticated Connections: This year’s Juneteenth Fund Celebration helped raise funds for seven nonprofit organizations dedicated to raising awareness and advancing the causes of Black equality and inclusion in the St. Louis and Chicago metro areas. It is important to remember the protests as our country responded to the graphic scene of George Floyd pleading for air. Then we learned of the deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and others as the summer of 2020 continued. The tragedy is that these follow a long list of recent black victims of systemic racism and judicial injustice that include Michael Brown, Laquan McDonald, Tamir Rice, and many others. Much of America has started to realize we have a systemic problem and were appalled that they may not have even been aware of the problems if not for smartphones and social media. People from all walks of life, backgrounds, and cultures finally had enough and elevated their voices for change through protest. Sometimes we need to see the injustice through our own eyes to make it real. Let’s not forget that the infamous Rodney King assault was captured on video over thirty years ago. Protests occurred then too, but even then, nothing changed. No matter your political views, we all deserve to be safe and free. Within Clayco, we’ve decided to go beyond symbolic stances of solidarity and support. We want to do something about this problem and we’re asking our closest partners to do something with us.

THE FIT AND FOOD CONNECTION (FIT AND FOOD) serve over 85 families each week through our Food Assistance and Delivery, and hundreds more monthly through our other programs. We strive to empower individuals along their wellness journeys and create meaningful change.

Mission: The Fit and Food Connection offers people living in food and fitness deserts access to free nutritious food, physical activities, educational workshops, and personal coaching to encourage and support healthy living.

Sophisticated Goals: We are hoping to get every family off of our waiting list, and improve our hybrid wellness class model which we have tested and will accommodate everyone in person and virtually, so we can continue to meet our clients where they are at. Sophisticated Giving: We have many ways for individuals and groups to become involved, share their talents and ideas, and to be the difference to a child. These include making monetary contributions, volunteering as a school representative or in our warehouse, mentoring a high school student, or serving on a board or committee. Another year end is upon us. And just like in December 2020, we’re again shaking our heads at what a long, strange year it’s been. But we’re also hopeful that like last year, these unprecedented times will again inspire unprecedented giving to the organizations that make St. Louis great.

The next few weeks will be telling. Kicking off with #GivingTuesday, Americans begin to embrace the spirit of giving. Nearly one-third of all individual giving in the U.S. comes in December, with 10% of all gifts being made in the last three days of the year.

So, what motivates this philanthropy? Is it the tax incentives? The barrage of year-end appeals that hit our mailboxes and inboxes? Or are we conditioned to give because society says we should?

Our experience working with donors and nonprofits over twenty years tells us that people are philanthropic because giving provides a sense of belonging to something bigger than ourselves.

Being generous gives us purpose and meaning. We feel empowered when we support organizations that align with our values. People give because of the joy it brings into their lives.

And there’s research to prove it! Studies show that giving is a powerful tool to boost our physical and mental health. People who volunteer or donate experience lower stress and blood pressure, less depression, and greater self-esteem. In fact, when we help others, there is a biological response called the Happiness Trifecta. When we give, serotonin (a mood-mediating chemical), dopamine (a feelgood chemical), and oxytocin (a compassion and bonding chemical) flood our brains, boosting our mood and counteracting cortisol (the stress hormone). You could call it “a Giver’s High.”

Recently, we’ve all needed that emotional high. The past 21 months have been challenging for everyone. As we watched the human needs of those in our community (and throughout the world) skyrocket, so much of what was happening felt out of our control. But the one thing we could control was our ability to be philanthropic and help others. We knew that by donating to one or many nonprofits, we could do good at a time when not much seemed too good. And this small act made us feel better.

The amount we gave didn’t matter. We felt good whether our gift was $5 or $5,000 because our gifts were meaningful and came from the heart. We’ve all heard it … the “every gift makes a difference” line. But it’s true. Giving is good for the donor and the recipient.

Working together. We should never take for granted the power of that phrase. After nearly two years of combating a global pandemic, we have learned about all we can overcome when we work together…and the consequences of when we don’t. We each have different beliefs and values, and may approach issues in different ways, but I believe we all pretty much want the same for our families and communities: to live healthy, peaceful, happy and prosperous lives (however we may personally define prosperity). This is the end goal of everything YouthBridge does - to create a stronger, more vibrant St. Louis for children and families – and for us, it begins with working together.

As a community foundation, there are several ways we build collaborations to ensure that all of our children and families have the support and services they need for successful lives. The first is by aligning community investment with donor passion. We do this by helping individual, business and community donors, either directly or through their financial advisor, identify the areas that motivate them and the nonprofits in their community that are doing the best work in that space. We then help develop impactful giving strategies and a long-term platform that will work best for them, whether a Donor-Advised or other charitable fund, private/family foundation or legacy giving plan.

But these are not one-and-done transactions. “Partner” is the first word of our mission statement because it’s what we are trying to cultivate with every collaboration – a true partnership.

A partner is in it with you, sharing a vision and a journey. We are always listening, learning, educating and advising our donor clients, and we can do this because we know the charitable landscape of St. Louis very well, particularly in the area of children and youth.

We also align with the hearts of our donor clients by investing in nonprofits they believe in. Every year we award a Heritage grant to two nonprofits that are selected from among the top 10 child-focused organizations supported by YouthBridge Donor-Advised fund clients. Through unrestricted, multi-year funding – totaling $75,000 – as well as capacity assessment and risk management consulting, the grant is intended to help strengthen organizations so that they can serve more people in the community. We are proud to have selected St. Louis Area Diaper Bank and Annie’s Hope for the Heritage Grant in 2021.

Walking the journey with nonprofits is another way we collaborate for change, and the Heritage Grant is just one example of how we seek to help St. Louis area nonprofits become stronger and more sustainable. We also provide grant money to child- and youth-serving organizations reviewed and selected by a youth-led committee, and fund proposals for ambitious initiatives that we believe can be transformative, because it’s the bold ideas that can bring about real solutions. For new nonprofits just starting out, we will often provide seed money and fiscal sponsorship, as well as support along the way in areas such as building infrastructure and approaching potential funders.

The simple truth is we all do better together than when we attempt to go it alone. During a stage performance, Helen Keller once said, “Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much.” Luckily, she had learned this lesson as a young girl when introduced to her lifelong tutor and would go on to accomplish many things in her life that had never been done before by a deafblind person. She found her vision and voice – and impacted the world – by working together.

Dear St. Louis friends and neighbors: St. Louis is the 13th most charitable city in the country, according to a recent survey. In fact, we ranked 7th in the “community” sector, which evaluated services like homeless shelters and food banks, while we were 25th in the area of “individual” charitable giving and volunteerism.* These results are gratifying — but not unexpected.

Our region’s generosity is on full display during Give STL Day, our 24-hour day of online giving. Since 2014, thanks to the kindness of thousands of donors, Give STL Day has raised $21.5 million for hundreds of local nonprofits. I am confident we will add to this total when do it all again on May 5, 2022.

We also saw a similar community response as we raised funds for regional Covid relief in 2020. That effort — undertaken literally overnight — raised $11 million to help those most affected by the pandemic.

Despite the successes, our Covid relief efforts exposed a regional vulnerability — the lack of a dedicated and well-funded community endowment.

Such a regional endowment could:

• Seed initiatives, activities, and programs that address problems and challenges we have not yet imagined.

• Help the region respond quickly and decisively in crisis and lead when we must seize opportunity.

• Enable us to plan beyond annual fundraising “cycles” and make strategic, long-term institutional or programmatic investments that will enrich and serve our community for the future.

In the coming months, the St. Louis Community Foundation plans to engage citizens in a conversation about charitable giving and a community endowment with an eye toward securing our region’s future. We hope you will join us.
