From the Editor-in-Chief I don’t remember when I first got comfortable with asking people for money, I just recall that it has always seemed pretty easy.

Maybe it is because I never ask someone to support an organization unless I have made a financial commitment first, or maybe it is because I was on the receiving end of charitable dollars for so long that my endless appreciation inspires enthusiasm. Over the years, working to raise awareness and funds for good works in our community has become a passion, and I have great gratitude and respect for others who do it - either professionally or as a fundraising volunteer.

A development director once told me, “Amelia, first you get their hands, then you get their heart, and then the wallet.” The idea, of course, is that donors are best developed from volunteers who have actively engaged with the mission of an organization; after all, those are the people who have seen first-hand how the community is impacted. It’s a smart strategy but runs the risk of de-emphasizing the importance of opening the wallet.

Years ago, when I was working on the leadership team of a significant capital campaign, I was assigned the task of reaching out to specific fellow volunteers to request a multi-year pledge. One meeting was with a woman I knew well, who had committed many hours to the organization over the years. It was an ask, I thought, that would be simple. To my surprise, she was completely opposed to making a financial contribution, citing her contribution of time, a valuable commodity for anyone. When I suggested to her that her money was equally, if not more, important to supporting the mission, she called me a bully. Mortified, I called the development director who assuaged my concern and told me if that is a bully, he’d like to have a few more.

One of my favorite writers and speakers is a Jesuit priest by the name of Father Gregory Boyle. “Father G,” as he is known to his parishioners, is the founder and director of Homeboy Industries, the world's largest gang-intervention and rehabilitation program. He is also author of several books, including Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion, a recollection of his 20+ years working in one of the most marginalized communities in the country, in south-central Los Angeles. Father G has lived his life in the service of others, but he is keenly aware of the importance of, as well as the differences between, donations of time versus donations of money. As he often says, “You don’t go to the margins to make a difference, you go to the margins to make you different.”

Father G’s memoir and his perspective on how hands-on service transforms us has informed my volunteer efforts as well as my financial gifts. Now, when I look for opportunities to serve, it is truly with a mind for how my heart will be changed, or my eyes and mind opened. When I give money, it is about recognizing that someone who is informed and equipped to do an important work needs cold hard cash to get it done. Time and money. Friends, sometimes it seems like we can never have enough of either one - I get it. But here’s to the ones who recognize that our most valuable commodities can and should be shared, because in the end, it isn’t just about bettering the community we live in, it is also about bettering ourselves.

Welcome to the 6th annual edition of Sophisticated Giving Columbus, which is easily my favorite project every year. Special thanks to our friends at the Columbus Foundation (our presenting sponsor), whose leadership has helped Columbus to become one of the most generous cities in the United States and the Central Ohio Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, whose National Philanthropy Day event is one of the largest in the country. New with this edition is the inclusion of the annual National Philanthropy Day award-winners, content we have looked forward to sharing in our pages for several years.

It is our hope that each of these annual registers will become a guide for anyone seeking opportunities to initiate and develop a relationship with charitable organizations in central Ohio. The pandemic has resulted in untold trauma, suffering, sacrifices, and losses that will be remembered 100 years from now, but the United States continues to face the consequences of an even longer legacy of racism in our country. We join others in our community in the pursuit of greater understanding and real, sustained progress in combating racism.

This can be particularly difficult work as ways, whys, and wherefores are assessed anew, but it can also be extraordinarily rewarding, moving the “separations of human division toward hope in our common humanity,” to quote author Isabel Wilkerson. We are determined to make meaningful progress in substantive and growing ways, ways that last.

We endeavor to strengthen and improve the well-being of our community through the most effective philanthropy possible. These may be years of tragedy and challenge, of injustice and hardship – but we can make them times of progress and triumph, as well. CELEBRATING PHILANTHROPY having touched countless lives and paving the way for the next generation of philanthropists and community leaders.

In 1944, the newly-formed Columbus Foundation received its first unsolicited gift: a $25 donation from Olga Anna Jones, a teacher, an editor of The Ohio Women Voter, and Columbus’ first city councilwoman. From the start, The Columbus Foundation has been at the center of identifying, cultivating, and inspiring the “helpers” in central Ohio - from donors at every level to the nonprofit organizations they support. At the annual Celebration of Philanthropy, the Foundation takes time to celebrate the helpers, too. Read below for more information on the 2021 Celebration of Philanthropy Awards and Honorees.

The Columbus Foundation Award Recognizing organizations that have made a difference in the quality of life in our community, the 2021 Columbus Foundation Award was presented to IMPACT Community Action. With a mission to fight poverty by providing hopeinspiring help and real opportunities for self-sufficiency, IMPACT’s core programs center on benefiting those with barriers to success and stability. During the COVID-19 pandemic, IMPACT, led by CEO Robert ‘Bo’ Chilton, has been instrumental in preventing evictions for thousands of residents in Franklin County. IMPACT has acted as a local leader in stabilizing families, whose employment opportunities were disrupted as a result of the pandemic, by providing emergency rent, utility, and mortgage assistance.

Through coalition efforts with 18 nonprofit partners, IMPACT has helped prevent eviction for 16,000 people, and dispersed $35 million in relief dollars. As part of the award, IMPACT received a $50,000 grant.

The Harrison M. Sayre Award Given in honor of The Columbus Foundation’s founder and 25-year volunteer director, The Harrison M. Sayre Award recognizes outstanding leadership in philanthropy in central Ohio. The 2021 award winners, Tom and Nancy Lurie, have devoted their lives to not only giving back to the community, but to inspiring generational giving within their own family.

Now three generations strong, the Lurie family gives their time, talent, and treasure to organizations supporting the arts, social services, women’s issues, and the Jewish faith. Tom and Nancy have long served on boards and committees with local nonprofits, including the Columbus Cancer Clinic, Temple Israel, Directions for Youth and Families, and the Columbus Museum of Art. Nancy was a long-time volunteer tutor at Columbus City Schools, and Tom has served in board roles with leading national institutions serving the decorative arts world. EMPOWERING THE DREAM OF EDUCATION The Columbus Foundation works with donors like the Van Heydes to establish a scholarship that achieves unique charitable goals by helping to define the award purpose, eligibility requirements, scholarship guidelines, and selection committee. Scholarships may be included in The Columbus Foundation’s general online scholarship application that allows students to fill out one application for many different scholarship funds. The fund will only award scholarships to eligible recipients, selected by the donor’s designated committee, ensuring the giving goals and educational priorities of the donor are met.

The Columbus Foundation’s expertise ensures that awards are disbursed on time and in accordance with the chosen process, including keeping track of donor gifts and contacting recipients and their schools. Donors are required to make a minimum initial contribution to establish a fund and to maintain specific balances, but the flexibility allows donors to add to the fund at any time. Additionally, Scholarship Funds can be funded by gifts of many types of assets, including cash, stock, real property, mutual funds, and closely held business interests.

With a personal touch, donors interested in a giving solution that closely matches their values and goals can make the dream of higher education a reality.

Philanthropy is often driven by personal experiences, interests, or compassion inspired by the awareness of a particular challenge or need in our community. A creative individual may be inclined to support the ballet or an art museum. For those touched by a chronic or terminal illness, donations to a particular hospital or organization that specializes in cancer, heart disease, or diabetes may feel particularly meaningful.

One visit to The Columbus Foundation’s online Giving Store yields hundreds of worthwhile organizations among which anyone can find a suitable match for gifts of any size.

Rare is the person whose life has not been positively influenced by education, and opportunities to donate directly to an alma mater or an institution that serves a demographic with whom we can relate can be a perfect fit.

Ian was the first-ever high school student to work on the line at a Cameron Mitchell Restaurant– Martini’s. This work experience, together with the encouragement given to Ian to pursue his culinary dream, had a profoundly positive influence on him. When Ian passed away, his parents worked with the Foundation to establish a fund that today focuses on multiple ways to honor Ian, including the Ian Adams Van Heyde Memorial Culinary Scholarship at Columbus State Community College. Through this scholarship, Ian’s parents are making the dream of education possible for someone else while honoring the memory of their son and the people who influenced him.

NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY DAY

For many years, I was grateful to kick off my Thanksgiving w e e k c e l e b r a t i o n s b y a t t e n d i n g t h e Na t i o n a l Philanthropy Day (NPD) Luncheon presented by the Central Ohio Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). One of the largest events of its kind in the country, the Columbus NPD luncheon saw more than 800 people come together annually for one efficient, fun-filled hour jam-packed with the recognition and celebration of individuals, corporations, and organizations for their making a positive impact and inspiring change in our community.

My first few experiences of NPD were as the tableguest of an organization I had long-supported as a donor.

However, since 2018, Sophisticated Giving Columbus has been a Media Sponsor of the NPD, proudly hosting friends and clients at our table and joyfully sharing with them the

experience of learning about honorees whose names and stories we might not have otherwise known.

As with many beloved traditions, the pandemic has altered the way AFP is celebrating NPD and honorees.

In 2020 and 2021, attendees tuned in virtually to watch the program and presentation of awards. In the pages that follow, please join us in recognizing and celebrating the class of 2021 National Philanthropy Day Columbus honorees - and let’s give thanks to live in a community where good people take time to recognize good deeds.

The 2021 National Philanthropy Day Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year is Monica Day, co-anchor of NBC4 Today. Monica is a graduate of Whitehall Yearling High School, where she was inducted in the Hall of Fame. She was crowned Miss Ohio USA 2008 and represented The Buckeye State in the Miss USA competition where she won the title of Miss Congeniality. Monica has also been recognized by Besa as a Community Champion and was a “40 under 40” honoree by Columbus Business First in 2020.

Monica has said that the thing she likes most about her job is the opportunity to be involved with local charities and events.

Monica has been very active in raising awareness of ovarian cancer during her time at NBC4 and is an avid supporter of The Ronald McDonald House, Besa and Harmony Project. She has also made it her mission to bring stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things to NBC4 Today, focusing on grassroots efforts that are changing central Ohio for the better. Monica lives in Columbus with her husband Sean, daughter Presley, son Palmer and their two fur-babies.

Zerqa Abid is the Founder and Executive Director of MY Project USA. Prior to starting MY Project USA, Zerqa co-founded and led Project Sakinah, a national initiative to address Domestic Violence within the Muslim Community. She is a mother, a philanthropist, a writer, a public speaker, a social/political activist, a community organizer, a campaign consultant and a small-business owner who has been recognized for her contributions to the community many times, including the Everyday Hero 2019 Award from the Dispatch Media Group and the 2018 People to Watch list from Columbus Alive.

Zerqa serves as a commissioner and Public Safety Chair to the Greater Hilltop Area Commission, is a founding member and the President of Muslims for Ohio PAC, a political organization of Muslims in Ohio, and has served on the Hilliard Education Advisory Council. She served as the PTO President of the Hilliard Weaver Middle School and is a member of Hilliard Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association. Formerly with NBC News, she was the first General Manager of The City Channel of the ARY Digital Network of Pakistan. Through her overseas company, she also organized international trade and consumer shows.

Zerqa is a Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude graduate of North Carolina State University. She received “Norma & Wally Ausley Merit Scholarship” for being “The Outstanding Student of Mass Communications” in 2000. She is also a member of Golden Key International Society.

Dana Lawrence has spent 22 years devoted to professional fundraising for nonprofit organizations, serving as Development Director for various Catholic churches, schools, the Columbus Catholic Diocese, and the Ohio State University Medical Center. Her initiatives led to the building of a church, expanding a school, funding medical services, and sustaining revenues for continued services to the missions of the organizations she has served. Dana is CFRE credentialed since 2014 with continuing certification pursuant to continuing education and professional activities. She also completed coursework through the American College of Financial Services to obtain an additional fundraising credential - Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP).

Currently, Dana serves as the Director of Development & Communication for the Westerville Area Resource Ministry (WARM). WARM’s mission is to provide “a hand up, not a hand out” through quality programs and services to facilitate positive change, and restore dignity and hope to make a difference in the lives of those WARM serves. Dana’s skills, knowledge, and positive management style contribute to WARM’s overall success. Under her leadership, staff is empowered to take initiative and be creative.

Recently, Dana created the first-ever comprehensive development plan for WARM that included improving WARM’s cash position by over $1 million. Her work is leading to the creation of an endowment, capital replacement reserves, and debt reduction for the organization. Her creative efforts will help ensure sustainable funding for the foreseeable future. By WARM’s 50th anniversary in 2022, WARM will be on track to attain a sustainable funding trajectory for the next 50 years.

The John and Mary Alford Foundation was created and founded in 1996 by Ronald B. Alford and Barbara Alford Cantlin to carry on the charitable and philanthropic giving activities of their parents. During their lifetimes, John and Mary Alford were dedicated and committed to making Newark and the Licking County community a better place to live. The Foundation has now awarded over $5.2 million in grants to non-profits primarily in the Licking County area, supporting educational, social, religious, and cultural programs with a particular interest in funding projects that positively affect a broad segment of the community, capital projects with broad-based community support, and seed money for innovative programs that demonstrate new approaches and techniques for solving important community needs and/or problems.

Jack and Zoe Johnstone are longtime supporters of the arts in central Ohio. Residents of the Short North, their exemplary leadership and support have stimulated the growth and vitality of Columbus’ creative culture. They have empowered arts organizations to collaborate, take creative risks, attract world-renowned talent, experiment with non-traditional venues, and open their doors to new and diverse audiences and artists.

The Columbus Foundation nominated Jack and Zoe for this year’s Leave a Legacy award to honor their thoughtful vision and remarkable impact—stimulating creativity, fostering collaboration, positioning central Ohio as a powerful arts incubator, revitalizing neighborhoods through the arts, and making various art forms—especially new music—accessible to all. Through their vision, trust, and creativity, they have committed to carrying on this great work well into the future.

Hexion is more than just a specialty chemical company whose products are often used in the building and creation of new and exciting products and landmarks. Based in Columbus since 1972, Hexion is a company committed to building a stronger community, resilient families, thriving children, and a promising and healthy future. With approximately 225 associates in Columbus, Hexion has been a strong and long-time supporter of many Central Ohio nonprofit organizations.

Pre-pandemic, Hexion hosted “Hexion Cares Day”, a full-day, company-supported volunteer event that allowed associates to select from a list of nonprofits in Columbus and more than 10 locations across the United States. Participants experienced a unique and impactful volunteer opportunity with opportunities to build homes, paint murals, plant community gardens, host pop-up petting zoos for children, cook and serve meals for the homeless, and provide book bags and school supplies to children in need.

Beyond leading their team to donate time, Hexion has made significant financial contributions to organizations that build a stronger community, including more than $6 million to United Way of Central Ohio and nearly $900,000 to BalletMet. They also sponsor non-profits that are dedicated to improving physical health including the American Heart Association, Pelotonia, and The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center–James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. Hexion isn’t only about bonding molecules; they are bonding members of the community – to each other and to the resources they need to be as superior as their innovative products.

In 1921, thirty five women from Dayton and Westerville met at Maramor Restaurant in Columbus with a simple goal: to plan how they could help the students of Otterbein College (now Otterbein University). Since the earliest days of the Westerville Otterbein Women’s Club (WOWC), tireless volunteers have conducted teas, potluck meetings, and picnics; a hardcover cookbook was produced and sold; speakers have been hosted; and a thriving thrift-shop was created and maintained. Money raised by the Westerville Otterbein Women’s Club has been used to benefit the Alumni Gymnasium, Howard House, the Student Health Center, and individual students via seven endowed scholarships and an annual grant for a student in need of financial aid.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CENTRAL OHIO (BGCCO) Who We Are: Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Ohio (BGCCO) provides comprehensive youth development programming and guidance to youth and teens both after school and during the summer. With seven Clubs located across three counties, BGCCO creates a safe, positive, and inclusive environment for more than 4,000 young people every year, giving them the opportunity to be heard, lead and build meaningful connections. In addition to outcomes-driven programming, Club members receive nutritious meals, recreation, friendship and mentorship, and a place to call home and belong.

How We Impact the Community: Our Clubs are found in Central Ohio’s most vulnerable communities. What We Do: BGCCO’s mission is to enable all young people to reach their full potential. The younger youth respond very well to these student leaders because they have “walked in their shoes” and made positive choices despite the pitfalls so common to our youth. This is the beginning of real community change.

Who We Are: Central Ohio Youth for Christ (COYFC) is a locally governed affiliate of the National Youth for Christ organization. We opened our office in 1981, and have been serving youth in Franklin and the surrounding counties of Central Ohio ever since. Our staff and volunteers reach out to teens and their families to help them navigate the challenges they face in our ever-changing world, regardless of their socioeconomic background, race, religion or gender.

THE CHILDHOOD LEAGUE CENTER How We Impact the Community: Each year through The Center’s high quality early intervention and education programs 100% of our children progress towards kindergarten readiness. Our work also helps to address the growing employment needs of Franklin County’s companies. Families who utilize services like The Center’s participate in the labor force at greater rates. With increased stability and financial security, caregivers can further support their children’s development by providing the resources necessary to join the labor force as adults.

Who We Are: Founded in 1945, The Childhood League Center (The Center) serves children from birth through age five who have developmental delays or are at-risk of falling behind in school and in life. Each year The Center serves more than 500 children through our Early Intervention and Preschool programs. Our wholistic approach supports both the child and their families.

In addition to serving the unique needs of each child, caregivers receive support and are coached on how to become the best advocate for their child. Together we help transform our children’s challenging starts into the unstoppable futures they deserve!

CITY YEAR COLUMBUS High School, Mifflin High School) had graduation rates of 81.5%, 69.9% and 72.2%, respectively, compared to a graduation rate of 81.3% across all Columbus City Schools and 85.9% statewide. This school year, City Year Columbus is expanding the WSWC model into Starling K-8, a school located in the Franklinton area, a traditionally and systemically under resourced neighborhood and a Columbus City School district priority.

Who We Are: City Year is an education-focused nonprofit organization that partners with public schools to help keep students in school and on track to graduate. City Year AmeriCorps members commit to a year of full- time service in schools, where they work as tutors, mentors, and role models. Unlike part-time programs, City Year is woven into the fabric of the school, and AmeriCorps members respond in real- time to student academic and social-emotional needs to provide holistic services from bell to bell.

How You Can Help: In addition to monetary donations, City Year Columbus has many ways for community members to be involved. Corporate partners and other professionals can mentor AmeriCorps members through the Deloitte Mentoring Program as well as provide professional development to the corps. Interested donors can stock the AmeriCorps pantry and provide items for student hygiene kits. As COVID-19 restrictions change, virtual school tours and morning greetings will be scheduled when possible.

Who We Are: Community Shelter Board was created in 1986, founded on the vision that no one should be homeless in our community, for even one night. Our mission is to lead a coordinated, community effort to make sure everyone has a place to call home. CSB is the collective impact organization driving the best outcomes for people facing homelessness in Columbus and Franklin County. CREATIVE LIVING Who We Are: Creative Living was founded in 1974 as a 501(c)(3) organization to solve the housing dilemma for adults with physically disabilities who desire to live independently but still require some day- to-day assistance.

With the help of many volunteers and significant donations from civic clubs, foundations, corporations and individuals, we opened our first, 18-unit apartment community (Creative Living I) on Perry Street across from The Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center. The success of Creative Living I precipitated the need for a second community, Creative Living II, that opened in 1986 and expanded our portfolio to a total of 34, accessible units.

Why We’re Important: To express it simply: for many, Creative Living is the difference between living affordably and independently or living in an expensive, skilled nursing facility, an inaccessible home, or with family members who are not equipped or physically able to provide adequate care.

The small businesses that ECDI funds hire employees, buy supplies, and contract out work to other businesses—creating a profound ripple effect on the local economy that strengthens historically marginalized communities and transforms lives. A 2018 study of ECDI clients, made possible by a grant from MasterCard Foundation, revealed the breadth of the economic impact of ECDI lending. The study found that the impact on the Ohio economy through ECDI clients comfortably exceeds $1 billion annually.

Who We Are: ECDI is a 501(c)(3) non-profit economic development organization headquartered in Columbus, Ohio with offices in Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Portsmouth, and Cincinnati; and field operations in Toledo. ECDI is also a certified Community Development Corporation (CDC) and a U.S. Treasury-designated Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI). Who We Are: Freedom a la Cart empowers survivors of sex trafficking and exploitation to build lives of freedom and self-sufficiency. We believe that giving a woman practical job skills and developing a strong work ethic is vital for creating a pathway to freedom. So, we’ve created a safe place of restoration where survivors can heal, learn and grow as they prepare for sustainable employment and reintegrate into our community.

How We Impact the Community: Freedom a la Cart has provided job training to over 100 survivors – 80 of those being in the last five years of which 83% have not received any new criminal charge since participating in our program.

Freedom a la Cart has provided supportive services to over 420 survivors in 2020.

What We Do: Freedom a la Cart understands that in order to move sex trafficking survivors out of vulnerability and poverty and into stability and economic self-sufficiency requires more than a job. So, Freedom developed a 24-month comprehensive life skills training AND workforce development program that includes: resource (case) management; job coaching; social connection; trauma counseling ; and financial literacy. By addressing this link between impact services, community, and employment, survivors are able to build a life of independence.

Our goal is to prepare survivors for personal and economic stability, train them for jobs in the community and link them directly with employers.

FUND THE CLIMB FOUNDATION How We Impact the Community: By providing support for the most basic of the hierarchical needs, Fund the Climb improves outcomes for patients who are actively engaged in addiction recovery treatment programs. The National Institute of Health estimates that every $1 invested in addiction treatment programs yields a return of between $4 and $7 in reduced drug-related crime, criminal justice costs, and theft.

When savings related to healthcare are included, total savings can exceed costs by a ratio of $12 to $1. Major savings to the individual and to society also stem from fewer interpersonal conflicts; greater workplace productivity; and fewer drugrelated accidents and illness, including overdoses and deaths.

Who We Are: We are professionals working at Basecamp Recovery Treatment and community stakeholders and volunteers who have witnessed the need for financial support experienced by individuals engaged in addiction recovery programs. These individuals often need assistance with basic living expenses and other items not reimbursed by insurance including restoration of documents, utility bills, and transportation to services - issues that could be barriers to their treatment program. We know that by providing this basic financial support , outcomes for these individuals can be improved.

What We Do: The mission of Fund the Climb Foundation is to provide financial support for patients in treatment for addiction in order to remove barriers that might stand in the way of recovery. Donations are used to advance education and prevention of substance use disorder as well as assisting with housing, transportation, nutrition & personal hygiene for those courageous enough to break the cycle of addiction and enter treatment. Support is sent directly to the appropriate provider (landlord, utility company, etc.) to ensure dollars are not diverted from their intended purpose and to ensure the individual’s needs are met in near real-time.

The Furniture Bank also helps stabilize the living situations of families impacted by poverty so they can address the underlying issues related to their life circumstances, allowing them to gain their independence and achieve self-sufficiency.

Additionally, our donation services eliminate nearly 400 tractor-trailers of waste from the central Ohio landfill.

Who We Are: We are a unique and collaborative local organization on a mission to reduce the impact of poverty by providing furniture to central Ohio families struggling with severe life challenges. We try to change that. GIGI’S emergency veterinary care for local, under-resourced animal rescues, too. Shelters and rescues want to save every dog they can, but saving homeless dogs is expensive. By using our expertise and resources, we’re able to invest in and strengthen our entire sheltering system to save more dogs.

Who We Are: Gigi’s is a first-of-its-kind nonprofit dedicated to healing and saving homeless dogs in rural, impoverished communities. Launched in 2018, we lead an innovative, state-wide effort to save shelter dogs in rural Ohio and get them adopted faster. HARMONY PROJECT How We Impact the Community: Harmony positively impacts the community by representing every dimension of diversity. We help develop peer-to-peer relationships across social, cultural and geographic barriers and we foster a sense of community and teamwork while promoting empathy and openness. Through our programs and community service, relationships are formed between individuals who would have little opportunity or motivation to know one another. Our volunteers provide more than 60,000 hours of community service each year averaging $1.5 million back to the community. Harmony also provides significant financial compensation to local artists.

Who We Are: Heinzerling Community is an intermediate care facility for individuals with severe or profound developmental disabilities. For 62 years, Heinzerling Community has provided residential services, and living supports for this special population in central Ohio.

Since this time, Heinzerling Community has cared for hundreds of children and adults with severe and profound developmental disabilities, creating a legacy of caring.

Today, approximately 200 children and adults reside at Heinzerling Community. Heinzerling Community is known for the exceptional quality of care it gives to residents.

How We Impact the Community : At Heinzerling Community, our impact goes far beyond the residents and families we serve. Every day we impact the entire Central Ohio community with the presence and involvement of people with disabilities. How We Impact Community: Mission Academy will be sited on a large property with easy access to New Albany, Westerville, Sunbury, and Johnstown. A community farming program will offer a unique learning experience that includes a working farm, providing food for students, staff, local shelters, and food pantries. This environment will enable students to learn about science and basic food preparation skills, while instilling a spirit of charity, service beyond self, and empowerment. It will be a safe community where students and staff alike feel cared for, encouraged, and challenged to be, as Matthew Kelly says, “the best versions of themselves.”

MOMENTUM-EXCELLENCE How We Impact the Community: Momentum inspires children towards excellence endowing them with skills essential for personal and academic success. Our programs create a shared experience among students and their classroom teachers and are considered an integral part of the school culture. For children experiencing trauma and complex emotions, Momentum is a passport to the deepest part of the brain where self-regulation is increased. Who We Are: Momentum strengthens childrens’ social and emotional development by engaging them in dance, music and performance. Our passionate team of talented teaching artists and musicians connect with more than 1,500 children each year promoting the development of life skills and deep joy through creative movement and performance. Founded in 2003 by Monica Kridler, the program is based on the nationally acclaimed teaching method originated by world famous dancer, Jacques d’Amboise. Momentum is proud to be entering its 19th year, having served more than 12,000 children since its inception.

Who We Are: Founded in 2008, Pelotonia exists to engage, inspire, and challenge a community committed to change the world by accelerating innovative cancer research. Since inception, Pelotonia has raised over $232 million for cancer research. We are a community of people whose lives have been impacted by cancer and are inspired to do something about it.

Whether that means cycling 20 miles, hosting a fundraiser, making a donation, or volunteering their time, every single person who is a part of this movement is making an impact in the advancement of cancer research.

How We Impact the Community: Year after year, through the dedication of our participants and donors, Pelotonia’s community continues to grow in Columbus, OH and nationwide. Thanks to the incredibly generous support from our local Funding Partners, 100 percent of community-raised funds go directly to fund cancer research at the OSUCCC – James. As a direct result of these fundraising efforts, Pelotonia researchers have developed life-saving drugs, discovered cancer-causing gene mutations and saved thousands of lives.

What We Do : As a centerpiece of our year-round fundraising efforts, Pelotonia hosts a three-day experience that includes a weekend of cycling , entertainment, volunteerism, and community. The event begins with an Opening Ceremony on Friday evening, followed by Riders gathering at the start lines on Saturday and Sunday to begin their journey cycling between 20-200 miles. The weekend comes to a close when Riders end at the finish line on Sunday afternoon. As we near the end of the year, the Pelotonia community is invited to celebrate the impact made possible by everyone’s fundraising and hard work.

What We Do: 2021 has been a challenging year due to the impact of COVID-19. Why We’re Important: Since 1885, The Salvation Army has been meeting needs without discrimination in Central Ohio.

We keep overhead low, with 89 cents of every dollar going directly to local services. SOUTH SIDE EARLY LEARNING For nearly 100 years, we have: • Developed partnerships with organizations across Columbus to ensure every child is provided the resources they need to thrive.

Who We Are : Since 1922, the mission of South Side Early Learning (SSEL) has been to ensure that every child six weeks to 5 years of age benefits from a holistic, high-quality early education. The teaching faculty and administrative staff work passionately to lead the partnerships, best practices and performance that maximize a child's first 2,000 days, providing a comprehensive program to promote intellectual, emotional, social and physical growth and development that meet the needs of each child.

What We Do: SSEL provides year-round, early education programs and strives to equip parents and students with the care and skills necessary to succeed in school and life.

Our holistic approach includes the family unit and through the work of our Family Service Center (FSC), we focus on strengthening families while teaching critical parenting skills, increase problem-solving abilities, and decrease high-risk behaviors. We recognize that sustainable home life is the foundation of success and we offer a variety of programs and resources to provide families with resources that will help them find affordable housing, manage their money, and connect with other community opportunities.

How You can help: Research shows that investing in early education can result in a lifetime’s return of up to $12 for every dollar invested. New research by NAEYC shows that, due to the pandemic, 81% of early care and education providers will be closed permanently by 2021 if no investments are made into early education. Through year-round sports training and competition in 20 Olympic-style sports, 20,000 athletes have the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a community where they belong. STAR HOUSE How We Impact the Community: In Columbus, the average young person becomes independent from family at age 24. Most practice adulthood with the safety net of family. However, over the course of a year, more than 3,000 youth in Franklin County, ages 14-24, fall into homelessness. They have no place to call home and have too often been orphaned, ostracized and abused by the adults in their lives. Youth living on the streets are at a higher risk for PTSD, human trafficking and even death.

In the midst of this despair, Star House provides safe respite and a chance to thrive.

Who We Are: Star House is a social service agency that operates Central Ohio's only drop-in center for youth, ages 14-24, who are experiencing homelessness. In addition, along with Finance Fund and the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA), Star House operates Carol Stewart Village—a neighborhood for young adults, ages 18-24, with on-site programs and services. Since 2006, Star House has used a multi-step, trauma-informed service model proven effective in providing youth experiencing homelessness, ages 14-24, with a chance to thrive.

What We Do: At Star House’s drop-in center, youth experiencing homelessness are provided access to food, clothing, hygiene items, laundry facilities, showers and a safe place to be. Beyond basic needs, our clinical team provides therapy and case management, and partner agencies provide on-site and community-based access to stabilizing resources, such as housing, transportation, health care, employment, education, addiction services, legal aid, government benefits, ID cards and more. Our housing village, Carol Stewart Village, offers 62 efficiency apartments and on-site access to transitional jobs, education, health care and social connections through mentorships, peer support and community engagement options.
