My first act of philanthropy was in the fall of 1989. A freshman at West Virginia University, I tracked down the local Salvation Army Angel Tree, carefully reviewed the remaining kids who needed “adopted” and selected the little girl who most reminded me of myself. I wish I could remember her name, but what I remember distinctly is the feeling of joy when I delivered her gifts, painstakingly wrapped in bright Christmas paper and large, glorious bows. In my mind it was easy to imagine her sweet face lighting up at the sight of the gifts, because it was so easy to recall my own reaction to the gifts I received when my name was pulled from the Angel Tree for many years. My childhood was marked with moments like these: baskets of food at Thanksgiving and Easter; a winter coat delivered just before a big snow; even my graduation cap and gown, purchased by several teachers and discreetly left in my locker.

Whether you have been on the giving or receiving end of any act of philanthropy, you know the joy and importance of sharing one’s abundance with another who is in need. In the following pages, you will see the profiles of more than 40 nonprofit organizations in our community - a list that is by no means comprehensive, but we hope proves helpful as you plan for end-of-year giving. You may learn a bit, as we did, about social enterprise (a relatively new term for organizations or programs that work towards social change while also making a profit). You’ll discover how to incorporate philanthropy into your estate plan, and you will read about how to best determine where and how to use the precious gifts of your time and talents.

Publishing this guide represents a great sense of joy and inspiration for our team. Leaving a Legacy Through Charitable Giving Written by Robert R. Dunn

Americans have a history of being the most generous individuals in the world, giving an estimated $370 billion to charity in 2015 alone. Most donors engage with their nonprofits of choice during their lifetime with direct gifts of money and assets, but planning for donations as a part of one’s estate plan is also an important consideration.

While it is no secret that there are tax benefits to making a donation to a qualified nonprofit, the essential element for all charitable giving is the donor’s philanthropic desire to make a gift – separate and apart from any tax considerations. While it may be more beneficial for a donor to make a charitable gift during lifetime as opposed to at death, there may be important non-tax reasons for waiting until death to make a gift, such as ensuring proper support during one’s lifetime for self or loved ones.

Structuring a donation at any time can be as simple as an outright gift to charity: a donor gives money or property to a charity and receives in return an income tax deduction for the value of the gift. Or it can be more complex, as in a gift of appreciated assets. For example, an individual wants to make a $10,000 gift to a charitable organization and owns stock currently valued at $10,000.

The stock was purchased initially for only $1,000. The donor could sell the stock and give the proceeds to charity, but the Internal Revenue Service will want a capital gains tax on $9,000 of appreciation. By transferring ownership of the stock directly to the charity, the donor can deduct

the full $10,000 value of the stock as a charitable contribution without recognizing any of the gain resulting from the appreciation. The receiving charity can sell the stock free of tax and have the full $10,000 for its needs.

In contrast to lifetime gifts, a charitable gift can also be a planned gift – that is, one that takes effect at the donor’s death. This can be made through an individual’s will or trust by making a specific bequest of cash or property. The gift can either be restricted for a specific purpose (e.g., to be used for scholarship purposes) or unrestricted and left to the general discretion of the charity itself. Language within the will or trust can be easily employed: "I give the sum of $25,000 to ABC Charity (or its successor). This gift is unrestricted [or to be used for maintenance of its facilities as determined by the then-serving executive director]."

Donors may want flexibility in their estate plan that would allow the family to decide regarding the extent to which gifts should be made to charity. The donor can provide in a will or trust that a bequest is to a certain individual, but also stipulate that the gift will pass to a desired charity if the individual “disclaims” or “renounces” the gift. An example might be, “I give to my son John the sum of $10,000; however, if John does not survive me or if he disclaims this gift, such sum shall be distributed to ABC Charity.” This permits the family to determine if the circumstances at death are appropriate for such a gift.

A donor can also create certain types of trusts, either during lifetime or at death, which benefit the donor, another person, and a qualified charity. These trusts are known as “split interest trusts.” One type of such trust is the charitable remainder trust. This type of trust permits an interest in the transferred property to be “split.” Thus, it is possible to provide a payment to a non-charitable beneficiary (the donor or another individual) and at the end of a specified period of time the property is distributed to the desired charity. The donor does not receive a charitable deduction for the full amount transferred to the trust (just for the value of the remainder); but he or she does have the benefit of providing a benefit to himself or a loved one for a term and yet still benefitting charity.

Often times an IRA constitutes a large part of an individual’s estate. In considering which assets to bequeath to charity and which to bequeath to heirs, it generally makes sense for someone with charitable intent to give IRA assets to charity, since following the donor’s death, such assets usually generate what is known as “income in respect of a decedent” (IRD).

IRD is inherited property that, if it had been received before death, it would have been taxable income to the decedent and reportable on his or her income tax return.

When IRD is received, the individual or estate receiving the property includes the income on the tax return for the year it is received. A donor is better off making a charitable bequest using IRD property and transferring other, non-IRD assets to their heirs since a charity is not affected by the IRD because it is able to keep the entire bequest without any tax liability.

For flexibility, a donor can provide for a retirement account to go to an individual heir under the primary beneficiary designation and designate the donor’s favorite charity as the contingent beneficiary. Similar to the use of a renunciation or disclaimer mentioned above, the family member could decide to make the charitable gift after the donor’s death based on the circumstances existing at that time.

Donors can also use IRAs to fund charitable bequests during lifetime. Congress has now made permanent the ability for a donor to give his or her required minimum distributions from an IRA to a qualified charity without increasing taxable income and impacting the availability of other potential incometax deductions. These “qualified charitable distributions”

(QCD) are otherwise taxable distributions from an IRA owned by an individual who is older than 70 1/2 and which are paid directly from the IRA to a qualified charity. The QCD can satisfy all or part of the amount of the donor's required minimum distribution from his or her IRA. The amounts that can be donated are limited to $100,000 per taxpayer, per year. Note that donor advised funds, discussed below, are not eligible to receive QCDs. One way to build a legacy of family charitable giving is through the use of a donor advised fund.

Generally, a donor advised fund is maintained and operated by a section 501(c)(3) sponsoring organization that maintains many such funds. Each separate donor advised fund is composed of contributions made by individual donors. Once the donor makes the contribution, the sponsoring organization has legal control over it. However, the donor or the donor's representative retains advisory privileges with respect to the distribution of funds and the investment of assets in the account. Many sponsoring organizations will allow not only the donors to be advisors, but also will allow the next generation in the donor’s family, such as children (and perhaps grandchildren) to serve as advisors as well. The donor can work with the sponsoring organization in drafting a memorandum that gives specific instruction with respect to the donor’s intent and guidelines for creating a lasting legacy of philanthropy. In this manner, a donor advised fund is an excellent way to introduce family to the benefits and responsibilities of charitable giving.

These are just a small sample of the many planning techniques that can be of benefit to the philanthropic individual. Charitable giving provides the satisfaction of knowing that an impact is being made on society and can also be used as a tool to impart important family values to the next generation. Those interested in incorporating giving into an estate plan should thoughtfully consider his or her objectives and work closely with trusted counsel to design a plan that is tailored to that individual’s goals and utilizes the most appropriate assets and vehicles to meet the donor’s objectives.

From Giving to Leading Written by Laura MacDonald You’ve given to the organization for years. You support the mission and admire the staff. Now, they've asked you to consider joining the governing board. You’re honored and intrigued, but unsure. After all, nonprofit boards have ultimate responsibility for an organization’s mission, finances, program quality, and for recruiting, supporting, and evaluating the chief executive. It’s an ethical—and legal—duty not to be taken lightly.

Should you? Board service can be a great way to serve the community, gain leadership skills and experience, and expand your network. Whether you are being asked to join the board of an art museum, social service agency, hospice, or any other type of nonprofit, ask yourself these questions.

Are you passionate about the cause? Board service is a big commitment. It can be gratifying to see the organization’s impact on the community. But, at times, board service can be challenging or even frustrating. If you have genuine passion for the mission, you’ll have resilience for the tough times and find successes especially satisfying.

Is the role clearly defined? Is the organization stable?

Ask the organization for a written description of board members’ responsibilities. The “job description” should clarify what is expected of board members in terms of time, talent, and treasure. Ask to review minutes from recent board meetings and audited financial statements, as well. These should indicate the current state of affairs—whether things are running smoothly or there is drama in the boardroom.

Can you devote the time? Board service is more than attendance at meetings. It takes time to prepare for each meeting so that you can contribute to discussions and make informed decisions. Most boards also require service on a committee, which means more meetings and more preparation. There may be special events of volunteer days you’ll be expected to attend. Effective board members are highly active participants in the life of the organization.

Can you make the financial commitment? Nonprofit organizations rely on charitable contributions, and board members are asked to set an example through their personal support. Some organizations suggest a minimum gift amount from board members; others ask board members to make the cause a “philanthropic priority.” It is likely that you’ll also be asked to help fundraise.

Are you comfortable with group process? Board work is teamwork. Only the board-as-a-whole has authority for the organization; no single board member may act on his or her own. Decision-making can require time, discussion, compromise, and patience.

Once you’ve asked these questions, you can make an informed decision about serving on a nonprofit board. If you conclude that board service is for you, then you can also anticipate the benefits that come when helping a nonprofit organization realize its mission. These include: • New skills. Board service may provide personal and professional growth, such as financial oversight or leadership, which can have application on the job or at home.

• Broader networks. You’ll meet people with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences who may enrich your life and introduce you to new opportunities.

• Paying forward. Nonprofit organizations contribute to a community’s quality of life.

• Giving back. There is mounting evidence that altruistic acts such as volunteering time and donating money provide psychological and social benefits.

There are also ample resources to help board members fulfill their commitment to an organization. For example, BoardSource (www.boardsource.org) offers a variety of tools to help boards and board members serve effectively. You can subscribe to digital newsletters such as Board Café (www. compasspoint.org/board-café-archives) or Blue Avocado (www.blueavocado.org/). Each sector also has unique support organizations ranging from the American Alliance of Museums or Americans for the Arts to the local United Way. Nonprofit organizations exist to serve the common good, and they rely on board members to help realize this lofty goal. When you serve on a nonprofit’s board of directors, you contribute to the wellbeing of our community and earn the gratitude of those whose lives are enhanced. Thank you.

THE CENTER FOR BALANCED LIVING Who We Are: Founded in 2000, The Center for Balanced Living is the only freestanding , non-profit in Ohio specializing in the education, treatment and research of eating disorders for adolescents and adults.

We do this through treating victims, advocating for change and conducting research.

At The Center for Family Safety and Healing (TCFSH) we focus on all aspects of family violence, beyond prevention and intervention. Our multidisciplinary team of experts provides the personalized care tailored to each person needs, while working to eliminate the damage these heinous acts cost society as a whole, all in an effort to becoming one step closer to ending family violence in our community.

CENTRAL OHIO YOUTH FOR CHRIST Who We Are: Central Ohio Youth for Christ (COYFC) is a locally governed affiliate of the National Youth for Christ organization. We opened our office in 1981, and have been serving youth in Franklin and the surrounding six counties of Central Ohio ever since. Our staff and volunteers reach out to teens and their families to help them navigate the challenges they face in our everchanging world, regardless of their socio-economic background, race, religion or gender.

How We Impact the Community: Our goal is to help a young person thrive to the point that they can and do give back to others. We have a sizable group of young adults who have aged out of our program (18 and older) but who invest in the younger teens by mentoring them. The younger youth respond very well to these student leaders because they have “walked in their shoes” and made positive choices despite the pitfalls so common to our youth. This is the beginning of real community change.

What We Do: COYFC is passionate about serving young people and their families, especially those considered at risk and who struggle with poverty and other societal issues. Our wholistic ministry approach reinforces the need for education, healthy relationships and giving back to the community. Through six ministry divisions we provide mentoring, teen parents education, financial literacy, textile arts skills, computer skills, homework help, job-skills training, leadership training, professional counseling, club meetings, retreats, case management services and community service opportunities.

Who we are:Founded in 1982 as Kids â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;n Kamp, our goal was to provide a camp experience for childhood cancer patients. CHILDREN’S HUNGER ALLIANCE Who We Are: Founded in 1970 in Columbus, Children’s Hunger Alliance is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to ending childhood hunger in Ohio. Our mission is to ensure children without access receive healthy food, nutrition education and physical activity.

Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, with regional offices in Cleveland, Cincinnati and Toledo, Children’s Hunger Alliance has 65 dedicated staff who are committed to improving the wellbeing of Ohio’s 1 in 5 children living in food-insecure households. No child should go hungry, yet more than 600,000 children in Ohio do not know where their next meal will come from.

in Ohio, Children’s Hunger Alliance invests in the communities where we live and work. For example, through a strategic relationship with Walmart, the organization received $1.6 million over three years to make a lasting impact on solving childhood hunger in local neighborhoods. We re-granted over $275,000 from Walmart funding to local schools, and consulted with administrators to implement best practices to ensure at-risk children can access healthy meals. Our support makes a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of children who otherwise would be trying to learn on an empty stomach.

What We Do: Children’s Hunger Alliance partners with family child care providers, daycare centers, school districts, and afterschool and summer nutrition programs to help provide healthy meals and snacks for children in their care, as well as nutrition and physical education to children and their families. Last year we provided more than 5.2 million healthy meals and snacks through our partner network of nearly 900 childcare providers and more than 200 afterschool programs. Although we are a non-profit, charitable organization, there are costs in hosting international and local programs, camps and events. This is where your financial support is valued and is put to good use. CISV Columbus hosted the Village program, an international camp for 48 eleven-year old children from 12 countries in 2010, 2013, 2016. The next Village in Columbus is scheduled for 2020. The Step Up program, an international camp for 36 fourteen-year-old teens from nine countries, was hosted locally in 2012 and 2015. The next Step Up in Columbus is scheduled for 2018. These participants live for 3 – 4 weeks in a suburban school with adult leaders and staff. Our chapter is responsible for housing, food, activities, supplies, and excursions.

Why We’re Important: Following the devastation of World War II, many people were focusing on initiatives to build and maintain peace. One particular idea caught the attention of child psychologist, Dr. Doris Allen. It was a proposal for a UNESCO peace education institute for postgraduates from many disciplines. The idea for Children's International Summer Villages (today known as CISV International) was conceived by Dr. Allen in 1946. As a specialist in growth and development, Dr. Allen, could not agree that the focus for peace education should be in the field of adult learning. She firmly believed that the ultimate source for peace, long range, lay with the children.

COMMUNITY REFUGEE & IMMIGRATION SERVICES Who We Are: CRIS is an independent non-profit agency serving the growing refugee and immigrant communities in central Ohio. We are a group of over 60 individuals hailing from more than 15 countries who are dedicated to helping refugees and immigrants reach and sustain selfsufficiency and achieve successful integration into the central Ohio community.

How We Impact the Community: Individuals who were resettled by CRIS just five years ago are buying homes, opening businesses that employ Americans, mobilizing their communities to vote, pursuing college degrees, and becoming citizens. An upfront investment in assisting refugees during their initial transition leads to significant long-term economic benefits and a vibrant, diverse, integrated community.

What We Do: As a refugee resettlement agency, we accompany newly-arrived refugees from the time of arrival at the airport through their first days and months in the United States. There are many challenges and obstacles that refugees must overcome upon arrival – from learning English to navigating new structural and cultural systems – and CRIS offers an array of programs that support individuals in their path to successful integration. Who We Are: Equitas Health (formerly AIDS Resource Center Ohio) is a not-for-profit community-based healthcare system founded in 1984. Our expanded mission makes us one of the nation’s largest HIV/AIDS, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) healthcare organizations.

We remain the largest provider of HIV/AIDS services in the state and among the largest in the nation.

This past year, nearly 1,400 HIV-positive patients received care at our Medical Center locations and another 4,600 clients were provided supportive services such as linkage to medical care, housing assistance, emergency financial assistance and health navigation. Other programs like Safe Point are addressing the opioid epidemic and Camp Sunrise is sending kids impacted by HIV to summer camp.

FREE TO SMILE FOUNDATION Who We Are: Founded in 2008, Free to Smile Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) humanitarian organization that provides FREE cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries, as well as, dentistry to impoverished children and adolescents living in third world countries.

How We Impact the Community: FTS impacts our community first and foremost by a tremendous amount of volunteers who participate on mission trips. There are also hundreds of volunteers who have worked tirelessly on fundraisers around Columbus and beyond.

All of this brings an immense amount of awareness to our community of this congenital deformity of cleft lip and palate. Maybe most importantly, our community becomes more empathetic to the human condition, making all of us collectively better individuals.

What We Do: Free to Smile brings together groups of people from all corners of the world with the common purpose of helping the most desperate people throughout the world with their congential deformities. FTS currently travels to Guatemala, Niger, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe.

Our team of volunteers each pay their own airfare and in-country expenses, as well as, donate their time and talent to make our missions happen. FTS partners with organizations in each country to care for the patients and ensure they are monitored after our team members return home. FTS returns to our sites annually to provide comprehensive care for our patients. Training and educating local doctors and nurses, as well as, bringing US students and residents are also important factors for FTS.

FREEDOM A LA CART

Who We Are: Freedom a la Cart empowers survivors of human trafficking to build a new life of freedom and selfsufficiency. These are women who were coerced into a life of sex trafficking, often by someone they loved and trusted.

They are recovering from the effects of severe trauma, drug addiction, PTSD, mental illness and poverty.

How We Impact the Community: In 2015, Freedom had 28 sun,ivors join the local workforce working over 17,000 hours. Through our partnership with the Community Shelter Board (CSB) and YMCA, Freedom prepared and served over 200,000 meals to guests at the Van Buren homeless shelter. Freedom is now seeking to move into our own kitchen space for the catering/box lunch business and directly sen,e the public with our own cafe. By expanding the catering sen,ice into a brick-and-mortar cafe in downtown Columbus, the opportunity for increased consistent work hours will enable Freedom to grow the number of sun,ivors employed and broaden outreach and advocacy efforts in the community.

What We Do: Freedom has a collaborative partnership with Franklin County Municipal CATCH Court - a specialized docket that provides intensive probation and treatment-oriented services to help victims of human trafficking. Freedom provides a community-based supportive services program that rehabilitates these women. Freedom also operate a catering social enterprise to support a comprehensive workforce training program that empowers survivors toward self-sufficiencr. We currently provide supportive services to 50+ participants of CATCH and have 28 paid part-time trainees in our workforce training program.

GLADDEN COMMUNITY HOUSE Who We Are: Gladden Community House is a settlement house located in the Columbus, Ohio neighborhood of Franklinton. We were founded by Rev. Washington Gladden of First Congregational Church, and we have been in continuous operation since 1905. We remain focused on providing essential programs and services to low-income children and families in order to help them gain a measure of self-sufficiency in their lives.

HOPE SPRINGS INSTITUTE Who We Are: We are a not-for-profit retreat and learning center in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in south central Ohio. We believe that bringing peace to ourselves through emotional, physical, and spiritual health, learning to build peaceful relationships with each other and the land and experiencing building peaceful communities will contribute to peace on this planet. As such, we offer profoundly transformational workshops on topics which include women's issues, social justice, empowered leadership, and personal growth.

We learn from members of the community how to be with this land in a way that honors the native species and we work with the community to bring these species back. People who work in the kitchen at Hope Springs learn to cook beautiful and healthy food and gain experience working in a commercial kitchen. Our gift shop supports local artisans by selling items created by Adams County residents.

What We Do: We provide sacred space for residential, experiential retreats that support our mission. We host one group at a time and work with leaders to create the environment needed for their work. Who We Are: In Christy’s Shoes is a non profit organization founded in Columbus, Ohio by a twin sister who tragically lost her identical twin to brain cancer.

The surviving twin and two best friends vowed to honor Christy by coming together, sharing her story and by making it their mission to inspire women to walk in their shoes with confidence, strength and stability.

How We Impact the Community: In Christy’s Shoes strives to maximize their impact on the community and this is most evident through the outcome of the women being served. When women have sustainable employment, safe housing, sober living, self worth, and compassionate treatment the impact on the community is invaluable.

In Christy’s Shoes is committed to the continuous work of their mission and helping women take steps toward a brighter future.

What We Do: In Christy’s Shoes hosts annual events in Ohio and Virginia, called Sole Celebrations. These fundraising events provide awareness and funds that go to programs offered by local non-profits that support women in vulnerable circumstances. These programs support women experiencing homelessness, unemployment, domestic abuse, substance abuse, human trafficking, and brain cancer/hospice treatment. KIPP COLUMBUS Who We Are: KIPP, which stands for the “Knowledge is Power Program,” is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools de dicate d to preparing students in underser ve d communities for success in college and life. Nationally, there are over 200 KIPP schools serving nearly 80,000 students and by the end of the decade, KIPP will serve nearly 120,000 students with 40,000 KIPP alumni college-aged or older.

OSU STAR HOUSE Who We Are: Star House is a drop-in center for homeless youth, ages 14-24, in Central Ohio. In 2015, we served more than 800 youth. We help transitional youth get connected and reconnected with the community. Star House offers a safe place for homeless youth to seek services and to establish trust in order to access stabilizing resources, such as housing, counseling, and employment opportunities. Because most services are not all within geographic proximity of a homeless youth, Star House provides a distinctive opportunity for those youth to receive integrated behavioral, social, and healthcare services all at one site.

How We Impact the Community: Founded in 2006, STAR House began as an outgrowth of a federally-funded research program. During the course of the research, it was determined that a drop-in center is necessary in order to engage youth into more intensive services including housing, education, employment and mental/physical health treatment. Star House uniquely integrates research and community service. Effective engagement, linkage, and treatment strategies are tested and put into practice without the myriad barriers in many other research-topractice efforts. In this way, Star House is always testing and implementing state of the art, evidence- based practices.

What We Do: Star House is a “one-stop shop” where youth experiencing homelessness receive items to meet basic needs, such as food, clothing and hygiene items. Star House also offers walk-in appointments with therapists who individualize treatment to meet youths’ needs.

Therapists are trained to connect youth with resources in the community and to help youth accomplish treatment goals. Therapists and other staff also connect with community partners to offer a full continuum of support, such as medical and dental providers, health and sexual wellness experts, employment services, recovery support groups and more.

It is estimated that 1200-1500 homeless youth and youth in transition exist in Central Ohio. These youths live directly on the streets or in abandoned buildings, or couch surf among friends’ homes. Most are disconnected from their families, and all are underserved by communities, left to fend for themselves on the fringes of our society. With limited rights and privacy, they have little access to services and supports needed to survive independently. These youth are at high risk for human trafficking, major physical and mental health issues and victimization.

PELOTONIA Who We Are: Founded in Columbus, Ohio in 2008, Pelotonia is a grassroots movement that was established with one goal: end cancer. We are a community of people whose lives have been affected by cancer and who were inspired to do something about it. Whether that means cheering along the side of the road during our annual bike ride, hosting a fundraiser, making a donation or volunteering their time, every single person who is a part of this movement is making a difference in the advancement of cancer research.

How We Impact the Community: Year after year, through the dedication of our Riders, Virtual Riders, Volunteers, and Donors, Pelotonia’s community continues to grow in Columbus, OH and nationwide. Thanks to the incredibly generous support from our local funding partners, 100 percent of every dollar raised by Pelotonia Riders, Virtual Riders and Volunteers goes directly to fund cancer research at OSUCCC-James. As a direct result of these fundraising efforts, Pelotonia researchers have developed life-saving drugs, discovered cancer-causing gene mutations and saved lives.

What We Do: Pelotonia weekend is a three-day experience that includes cycling, fundraising, entertainment, volunteerism and community. The event begins with an Opening Ceremony in Columbus on Friday night before Riders hit the road the next day. On Saturday morning, Riders gather at the start lines to begin their journey riding between 25-180 miles. The event weekend comes to a close when our two-day Riders end at the 150/180-mile finish line on Sunday afternoon. As we near the end of the year, the Pelotonia community is invited to an annual Check Celebration event to reveal and celebrate the total amount raised.

How You Can Help: When it comes to getting involved with Pelotonia, there truly is something for everyone.

Anyone who would like to participate in the annual ride weekend can do so by registering and fundraising as a Rider, Virtual Rider or Volunteer. Pelotonia wouldn’t be possible without the support and dedication of nearly 3,000 Volunteers who cheer on and keep nearly 8,000 Riders fueled while managing logistics along the route.

Participants go the extra mile by sharing their experiences and inviting their friends, family, co -workers and neighbors to join them in this movement to end cancer.

Why We’re Important: Since 2009, Pelotonia has raised more than $122 million for innovative and lifesaving cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center–Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC-James). Pelotonia dollars support four key areas within Ohio State’s cancer program: idea grants, student fellowships, recruitment and retention of the brightest minds in cancer research, and tools for discovery. Two major breakthroughs to note include the development Ibrutinib, a new therapy for chronic lymphocytic leukemia and the Ohio Colon Cancer Prevention Initiative (OCCPI).

THE RUN THE RACE CENTER THE BRIAN MUHA MEMORIAL FOUNDATION Who we are: The family and friends of Brian Muha started the Foundation and The Center. Brian grew up in central Ohio and was a college student when two boys high on crack and other drugs broke into Brian’s college apartment and even though they didn’t know Brian, they assaulted and killed him...Brian was 18 years old and wanted to be a pediatrician.

His kind and charitable spirit lives on in his family and friends who are now committed to helping others in his name. Now, both the Foundation and The Center are supported by good-hearted people all over Ohio and beyond because they recognize the work and results of the work.

Our mission is to provide all we can that helps people in their spiritual, educational, physical and emotional lives, especially children and their families who live in the innercity. The Run The Race Club is founded on the principle that loving, personal, committed attention is still the best “program” around when it comes to helping others. Our mission is to love the children and their families, to establish friendships and relationships with them and to offer them resources and activities to promote their personal and educational development.

• I Want To Work Initiative: The older “Racers” maintain the Center, keeping it clean, making small repairs, painting and landscaping. They are learning skills and learning how to be at work on time, how to work efficiently and well.

• Integro: Buying homes in the Hilltop, teaching the older “Racers” to make repairs, land-contracting the homes to Run The Race families so they can own a home, maintain it, and do so economically. They have a home of their own and take pride in their neighborhood, thus improving the whole community.

YWCA COLUMBUS Who We Are: We are the oldest organization in Columbus dedicated to the needs of women. For over 130 years we have worked to empower women, eliminate racism, and to promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. We provide networks of support for women at all stages of their lives. We are for women and we are led by them. We provide critical programs for some of the community’s most vulnerable women and families and we continue to be the platform from which they can plant their feet and grow.

Family Center provides emergency shelter and critical services to stabilize homeless families in Ohio. In 2016 we will serve more than 3000 individuals at our Family Center. We also provide women's leadership training to strengthen our community and support emerging leaders.

We help homeless moms find stable housing, working moms find safe childcare, young girls find leadership and social justice training, and community leaders find a showcase for their talents.

What We Do: We touch the lives of more than 40,000 women and families through thoughtfully planned and critically needed programs that support and empower women of all kinds. We provide permanent supportive housing for women struggling with chronic homelessness and mental illness, and emergency housing for homeless families who have no where safe to stay. We offer several leadership training opportunities for women at various stages of their lives. Our YWCA Kids Place program offers before and after school care in seventeen schools in Gahanna and Westerville. We also champion social justice and continue to fight against racism.

How You Can Help: There are many ways the community can get involved and support our mission. It takes over 5,000 volunteers each year for us to successfully carry out our programs and services. We need help hosting and serving meals at the Family Center, facilitating activities for the families, reading to the children, and maintaining the community garden. We need vital supplies such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, diapers, and more. Our Women’s Residency is always seeking volunteers to assist with resume writing and hosting activities. Americans show their generosity every day in ways small and large. Most familiar to us is charitable giving. Our mail, emails, friends, and family are continually showing us ways to write checks to deserving causes. Many of us also are generous with our time. We volunteer, join nonprofit boards, go on fund-raising walks.

There is a third way to give back that is relatively new and possibly unfamiliar to many of us -- you can support a nonprofit’s mission in many of your everyday buying decisions. It is not widely understood that nonprofits sell some of their goods and services in order to earn profits that they plow directly back into their missions.

Nonprofits have substantially expanded these sales activities over the past decade as a way to supplement and leverage the charitable gifts they receive.

Nonprofits (501c3 charitable organizations) are unique businesses. On the one hand, they are charged with providing a mission service that loses money if it is done well. That is the reason why for-profit businesses don’t provide those services. On the other hand, nonprofits, despite their name, must be profitable or else they would be forced into bankruptcy. To resolve these conflicting mandates, nonprofits have solicited charitable gifts in order to support their mission activities without bankrupting their organization.

In the last 15 years, this approach has not been enough. Despite the growth of philanthropy in the U.S., charitable giving has barely kept up with the demands placed on nonprofits to expand their mission activities. Indeed, according to government statistics, charitable giving in the U.S. has stagnated at 25 percent of nonprofit revenues since 1985, while government support of nonprofit services has declined over that period. In response, nonprofits have more aggressively added profitable services to fill the financial gap and keep up with the demand for their mission services.

This practice of selling profitable goods and services to supplement philanthropy is popularly labeled social enterprise. Social enterprises are most commonly

owned and operated by nonprofits to channel profits to the nonprofit mission. More recently for-profit social enterprises have been formed to use business to address social needs that typical for-profit businesses would not likely address.

Giving your business to a nonprofit social enterprise is an additional way you can support a nonprofit’s mission. It is easy to see that the cafes and gift shops at museums are a way to spend money and help a museum. Other ways to spend and help are not so easy to see, so the Center for Social Enterprise Development has developed an online Social Enterprise Directory at www.cincohio.com to help you channel some of your everyday spending decisions toward social enterprises that give back. The directory is organized by the type of product or service.

View this list of products and services and, next time you are making a buying decision, look at the online directory to see if a social enterprise’s product or service can meet your needs.

• Your Home: lawn care, furniture, pest control, painting, groceries, quilts • Your children: classes in art, dance, science, cultural diversity, music, tutoring, summer camps • Yourself: coffee, dining, jewelry, clothing, stationery, prescriptions/supplements, gifts • Your business: commercial cleaning, catering, landscaping, painting, demolition, call center services, volunteer coordination So when you think about how you can give back to the community, continue to make charitable contributions and volunteer your time.
