Honoring a Legacy

Please allow me to introduce myself: I am Jennifer Simon, proud daughter of Herb Simon. Along with my brothers, Stephen and Asher, and my sisters, Sarah and Rachel, we are the directors of the Herbert Simon Family Foundation.

The Herbert Simon Family Foundation is a private family operating foundation that was established in 1999. In 2011, the Foundation expanded the board to include the five of us—the family’s second generation—and we then quickly engaged the philanthropic services of Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF), which include strategic charitable advising and grant-making counsel.

As we developed in our new roles, it was critical to my siblings and me to continue the legacy of giving back that our dad has modeled for decades. He has taught us many lessons over the years, but the one thing that has been paramount to him has been giving back to Indianapolis and the state of Indiana, because our home city and state have given us so much. When our dad and Uncle Mel bought the Indiana Pacers in 1983, it was a dream come true for them. Yet, their bigger motivation, more than being NBA owners, was and has always been keeping the team here in Indianapolis, because of how much this city means to our family.

We, as the second generation of the Herb Simon family, want to continue that tradition of giving back and creating opportunities for those in great need. We plan to hone our efforts to focus most on the initiatives and needs that are sometimes overlooked by larger organizations in the world of philanthropy. Together, we are committed to promoting social justice in areas of: arts and culture, basic needs, education, environment, animal welfare and healthy living.

We pledge to continue our commitment to serving and supporting you—our fellow Hoosiers—just as you have supported us over the years. Why we’re important: 500 Festival events and programs are mostly free and produced largely by volunteers. They enhance the image of Indianapolis by showcasing the city’s cultural, educational and social benefits to the world.

What started as a movement by civic leaders to connect the community to the significance of the Indianapolis 500 has led to new traditions and $400 million in added economic impact that further enhances all of the benefits that come from being the home of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

ABBIE HUNT BRYCE HOME Who we are: Imagine you were dying—and no one seemed to care? That’s the depressing problem we solve every day!

Abbie Hunt Bryce Home, operated by the local nonprofit Morning Light, provides free living arrangements, including food and shelter, for hospice patients who have no appropriate place to live or who are homeless. We also provide living space for our neighbors who need a suitable home situation so they can receive proper home care. The Home honors Abbie Hunt Bryce, the founder of the local Visiting Nurse Service who lived as a tireless champion of services to assist the poor. Traditionally, we have relied on donations and legacy gifts to support this compassionate mission.

the Home is not solely affiliated with a large health care system or religious organization. This allows the Home to focus on those with limited means and to simultaneously work with several hospice and medical providers on individual plans of care. Since traditionally there has been no dedicated patient funding stream, donations to the Home have immediate impact and directly support quality of life for terminally ill patients.

How you can help: Many Abbie Hunt Bryce Home supporters choose to join the Commitment Circle At The Abbie Hunt Bryce Home, for individual donors who annually contribute $1,000 or more. That amount represents one day’s worth of operating costs. Hundreds of supporters flock to the annual Beach Ball, a summer party held in early March, and to Rolling For Hope, an afternoon bowling escape/fundraiser held in mid-August.

Details are available at morninglightinc.org, where one can also make an online donation. Many opt for monthly payments, which allow for larger gifts.

Many groups collect items from the Abbie Hunt Bryce Home “Wish List” to support a resident’s stay.

This can include blankets, sheets, heavy towels, socks, sweatpants, Kleenex, paper towels, liquid soap and nonperishable foods. Again, the complete list can be found at morninglightinc.org.

We welcome your visit and are always looking for volunteers to provide companionship, staff support, and to cook a meal or two. What we do: Abbie Hunt Bryce Home and its staff become a resident’s “family” and support system for hospice patients and others who have no appropriate place to live or to receive care. Residents have limited financial means but thanks to the Home they have their own room, meals and round-the-clock comfort. All this is provided free of charge, thanks to community support. Most residents are enrolled in a certified hospice program, meaning that they have six months or less to live. In recent years, the Home began housing homeless patients recovering from surgery.

We accept referrals from hospitals, charitable organizations, physicians, hospice programs, faith-based organizations, and self or family members.

Why we’re important: More than a decade ago, dedicated nurses and physicians found out that many homeless people were not able to die in dignity and receive proper care simply because they had no place to live! That’s how the Abbie Hunt Bryce Home was created, serving more than 500 Hoosiers since its 2004 opening. This residence is a home in every sense of the word: from individual apartments; to home cooked meals; to common living rooms; to the backyard Rotary Club of Indianapolis Memorial Garden, which contains bricks with the names of those who have lived their final hours here.

Many families visit and search for the names of their loved one, connecting to the peacefulness of the Home’s setting.

There is no charge for hospice patients to live at the Abbie Hunt Bryce Home, for those who qualify through their terminal diagnosis and lack of adequate living arrangements.

AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION IN INDIANA Who we are: The American Lung Association is the leading organization working to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease, through research, education and advocacy. Our work is focused on five strategic imperatives: to defeat lung cancer; to improve the air we breathe; to reduce the burden of lung disease on individuals and their families; to eliminate tobacco use and tobacco-related diseases; and to accelerate fundraising and enhance organizational effectiveness to support the urgency of our mission. Whether it's searching for cures to lung diseases, keeping kids off tobacco or fighting for laws that protect the air we all breathe, the work of the American Lung Association helps to save lives every day.

Through our Lung Force initiative, we strive to unite men and women together with their loved ones to stand together for lung health and against lung cancer.

Lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer of both men and women in the U.S., and every seven-and-a-half minutes a woman learns she has lung cancer, yet only 2% of women cited lung cancer as a cancer that is top of mind for them. In Indianapolis, the American Lung Association hosts the Lung Force Luncheon and Yoga Event to raise research funding and awareness to defeat lung cancer. We also host the Lung Force Expo every fall, which educates our local lung health professionals as well as lung disease patients and their caregivers. It is our goal to educate everyone on their risks; this involves our tobacco control policy change efforts, Freedom From Smoking classes and Lung Force programs.

Other events allow for individuals, families, companies and friends to honor or memorialize a loved one affected by lung disease, tackle a personal challenge and show support for our mission.

What we do: Locally, the American Lung Association hosts special events in the Indianapolis community, offers programs and education for healthcare providers, patients and caregivers, teaches Freedom From Smoking courses and advocates for healthy, smoke-free air for Hoosiers to breathe. The Evening of Promise Gala, Fight For Air Climb, and Lung Force initiative allow all segments of our community to engage with our organization, promote healthy lungs and healthy air, and fundraise for the mission.

How you can help: There is no shortage of ways to become involved with our mission. Participate in the Fight For Air Climb as a climber or volunteer, purchase a table at the Evening of Promise Gala, support our Lung Force Expo and Luncheon, join our Advocacy Committee or make a donation that will save lives.

Why we’re important: For more than 110 years, the American Lung Association has led the fight for healthy lungs and healthy air. Formed as the National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis, we were the first voluntary health organization in America. We later became the American Lung Association and continued the fight, targeting other threats to lung health. In Indiana, 90 cents of every dollar raised by the American Lung Association supports the mission work. At the American Lung Association we never take breathing for granted, because millions of Americans fight for each and every breath.

ANTI-DEFAMATION LEAGUE

Who we are: The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) was founded in 1913 to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment for all.

per year. ADL training is mandated for all new agents in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Additionally, 100% of major metropolitan police departments in the United States have been represented by participants at ADL training on extremism and terrorist threats.

What we do: Today, ADL is the world’s leading organization combating anti-Semitism and all forms of discrimination, exposing hate groups, training law enforcement on hate crimes and extremism, developing implicit bias curricula for students and educators, and countering cyber-hate and bullying. ADL completes it work through a network of 26 regional and satellite offices in the United States and through an office in Israel.

ADL drafted the hate crimes legislation that served as the model for 45 states’ hate crime laws. We also stand as a check against extremism, constantly adapting to our ever-changing world, as evidenced by our social media work with Facebook, Twitter and Google to combat discrimination online.

Why we’re important: ADL matters now more than ever.

Anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and racism are sharply on the rise. White supremacists are wantonly recruiting on college campuses. Civil discourse and informed debate are seemingly at all-time lows. And perhaps most alarmingly, hate is seeping down to the junior high and high school levels. This cannot stand.

How you can help: Suggest schools or community organizations at which ADL can conduct trainings.

ASCENT 121 Who we are: Ascent 121 provides long-term trauma recovery for Indiana teen survivors of sex trafficking. Most of our clients are teenage girls, although we do see some boys and kids as young as 10 or 11. Our agency has facilities on the near-east and near-west sides of Indianapolis.

Why we’re important: Recovery from sex trafficking requires highly specialized care. There are very few agencies in Indiana that provide ser vices designed specifically for this population and who are dedicated to their long-term recovery.

What we do: Most people find it hard to believe that sex trafficking of teenagers could happen right here in our community. The reality is that it happens here every day. Each year, Ascent 121 serves over a hundred local survivors and their families.

Most kids are sold online through ads on sites like Backpage.com. Who buys sex from a teenager? National statistics say the most common buyers are middle-aged, white-collar professional, married men.

Traffickers prey on the vulnerability of kids. More often than not, our local kids are being exploited by someone they love or someone they trust. Coercion is the usual tactic. What does that look like? Coercion looks like granny selling the kids to pay the rent. Coercion looks like Uncle Jimmy selling the kids to support a drug habit.

Coercion looks like a vulnerable teen runaway drawn into a relationship with an older boyfriend who exploits her.

Law enforcement recovers the kids and places them with our agency. Depending on their circumstances, they will receive clinical care either at home or in a residential facility. Most kids spend between six and 12 months with us during their initial intensive treatment. Clinical treatment includes medical care, counseling, group and family therapy, addiction recovery, equine therapy, art therapy, health and wellness.

Following that, our therapists stay on to support the kids and their families for as long as they need it, sometimes for several years. Once a client has returned to the community, she can choose to participate in Ascent 121 Aftercare. This program provides weekly support that keeps the kids connected to us and to one another.

Aftercare includes life skill development, health and wellness, art therapy and Bible study. These components all work together to support a survivor as she works toward independent living.

How we affect the community: There is no area in Indiana that is immune to the issue of trafficking. Beyond clinical services, Ascent 121 offers awareness training and events that help our community better understand the issue of sex trafficking. We speak to businesses, churches, community organizations and schools so that parents and teens recognize the risk factors when they see them. We also provide training for service providers, law enforcement, health care providers and other professionals in the community that serve youth.

How you can help: By joining our volunteer team you can help Ascent 121 get further faster. Our volunteers staff events that raise awareness, help with office work and coordinate service days. On our website there are service projects designed for individuals, families or groups. You can download step-by-step instructions for ways to help our staff or the kids we serve.

Our greatest need is financial contributions. Ascent 121 is funded by a combination of billable services and charitable giving. The more we are able to raise, the more kids we can serve.

ASSISTANCE LEAGUE OF INDIANAPOLIS Who we are: Assistance League of Indianapolis is a nonprofit, all member volunteer, non-political, non-sectarian organization committed to serving the needs of children and adults through ongoing philanthropic programs developed and managed by its 200-plus members.

How we affect the community: Assistance League of Indianapolis is a recognized leader in supplying services to the underserved in our area. Our accomplishments are done with the efforts of member volunteers, as there are no paid staff or salaried employees. In fiscal year 2016-2017, the members of Assistance League logged over 28,076 charitable hours.

Assistance League of Indianapolis serves a large area, ranging from our major city to quiet suburbs. The success and growth of our philanthropic programs is based on 33 years of experience identifying and assessing needs and designing programs that deliver solutions effectively. Following our strategic plan, the organization continually researches, studies, and implements programs that address the emotional, physical, and economic needs of underserved families, regardless of ethnicity or creed. Since 1984, our philanthropic programs have provided…

• More than 55,000 underserved students receiving new clothing and supplies and 42,204 receiving new footwear through Operation School Bell. In addition, 68 elementary schools are given extra school clothing, socks and underwear to be distributed by social workers.

• More than 13,427 Assault Survivor Kits and 16,826 undergarments delivered to 24 agencies.

• 20,768 teddy bears to give a smile and comfort.

• 632 older adults enjoyment of playing bingo and the gift of friendship.

What we do: Operation School Bell offers new clothing, footwear and supplies to more than 8,000 students each year who live in poverty, helping them to arrive at school ready to learn. There are three divisions of the program: Clothing, Shoes, and Beyond the Bell. We serve students in kindergarten through 6th grade from the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) and the Metropolitan School Districts (MSD) of Lawrence, Washington, Pike, Warren and Wayne Townships.

Assault Survivor Kits give nurses, doctors, and counselors who treat victims of assault, both adults and children, a way to restore a sense of dignity and hope by providing a change of clothing that can be worn home from the hospital. ALI Bears offer comfort to many traumatized, ill and grieving adults, teens and children. ALI Friends offer companionship and caring for older and disabled adults.

Why we are important: Families of the children who are served by Operation School Bell report that the money they save as a result of clothing supplied to their children allows them to pay for essentials such as housing, food and utilities.

In a retail store setting, the students select new school clothes, underwear, socks, a coat, a winter hat and glove set, a belt, hygiene supplies, two new books and a duffel bag in which to carry home their new wardrobe. The attire provided to students is often the first new clothing and hygiene items they have ever owned. We know that new shoes are important when we see the ill-fitting and worn shoes we are replacing.

Many assault victims must surrender their clothes for evidence of a crime. Our Assault Survivor Kits supply new, warm garments to victims so they have more than a hospital gown or scrubs to wear home. Our kits provide a change of clothing for victims of domestic abuse who may have left their situation with only the clothes they were wearing.

There are children and adults in area hospitals, hospices and family service centers who need something to fill their empty arms during times of grief and trauma. ALI Bears offer that comfort.

ALI Friends program brightens the lives of people in health care facilities and adult day care centers. Celebrations for special occasions are offered to guests and residents who choose to participate, enjoying games, arts and crafts, music and healthy treats.

How you can help: Become a member. Interested individuals, corporations, and foundations can provide support with monetary and in-kind donations, and grant awards directly to Assistance League of Indianapolis. You may also attend and/or donate to our fundraising events. These opportunities include the Spring Fling in April and the Holiday Luncheon in early December. We are proud that 90% of every dollar we spend directly benefits the individuals we serve.

BREBEUF JESUIT PREPARATORY SCHOOL Who we are: Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School is a Catholic and Jesuit high school in Indianapolis that provides an excellent college preparatory education for a lifetime of service by forming student leaders into Men and Women for Others.

Detroit, Chicago and South Dakota. In addition to Brebeuf ’s service program, charity drives are held each month where the community comes together and collects items to be donated to those in need. For example, in January 2018, Brebeuf Jesuit collected hats, gloves and coats for the Catholic Charities Crisis Office in downtown Indianapolis. In February, the Brebeuf Jesuit community kicked off its annual Food Drive to benefit St. Vincent de Paul. For the past three years, Brebeuf has donated over 24,000 cans of food annually. Brebeuf Jesuit also works with adults and alumni in the community through spiritual outreach and formation programs. Lastly, Brebeuf Jesuit holds community events where the community is invited to hear from speakers and authors regarding vital and engaging cultural and diversity issues. CANDLES HOLOCAUST MUSEUM Who we are: Candles Holocaust Museum and Education Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1995 by Holocaust survivor Eva Kor. Our mission is to shine a light on the story of the Holocaust and Eva Kor to illuminate the world with hope, healing, respect and responsibility.

What we do: As a Holocaust museum, we provide a safe space for difficult conversations on topics such as refugees, human rights, social justice, freedom, inclusion and racism.

Candles offers exhibits, educational workshops and public programs to address relevant issues in our world today.

We educate people in our community and around the world through the first-hand accounts and experiences of Holocaust survivors, both in the museum and through programs such as our annual trip to Auschwitz.

How you can help: Candles is embarking on many projects to ensure that the museum's mission and Eva Kor's legacy continue to help educate and heal people and communities for many years to come. One such initiative is New Dimensions in Testimony, an innovative project to preserve and share Holocaust survivor testimony using 3D interactive imaging. THE CARMEL INTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL Who we are: The Carmel International Arts Festival (CIAF) is a volunteer organization working to educate and create an understanding and appreciation for the value of art in the home, the school, the community and the world.

Arts and Design District. Proceeds from the CIAF fund scholarships and awards for local student artists who have the opportunity to enter their work in a juried art exhibit at a local art gallery.

What we do: The CIAF sponsors an annual festival where art in all forms is exhibited for the public to enjoy, purchase and learn about. The festival features approximately 135 artists who exhibit and educate patrons on all facets of their work. Local theater companies, symphonies, Heartland Film Festival, along with other vocal and performing artists, are offered the opportunity to share their art with the community. The festival’s main stage features music and dance performances by international groups representing diverse cultural traditions from around the world. Food vendors are chosen to educate the public on the offerings of local ethnic restaurants, cooking styles, and ingredients of international cuisine.

To reinforce the mission of education in the arts, the festival juries an exhibition of works from students at Carmel and University High Schools. The festival creates opportunities for teachers to educate students in preparing their work to exhibit. Professional artists from Indiana art schools judge the students’ work and award scholarships.

How we affect the community: Art education is the mission of the Carmel International Arts Festival. The festival offers a component of education in the arts for all ages, teaching the language of arts, providing knowledge of art production, affording assistance in helping understand arts in civilizations and the role art has played both past and present. The CIAF provides the opportunity for the citizens of Indiana to investigate new facets of the arts and humanities in their lives, and to begin a lifelong pursuit of the arts. CAROLINE SYMMES CANCER ENDOWMENT Who we are: The Caroline Symmes Cancer Endowment raises funds exclusively for Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health. The endowment is named after Caroline Symmes, who was just three years old when she was diagnosed with Wilms Tumor Disease, the most curable type of kidney cancer in both children and adults, with a 90% survival rate. Caroline had one of the most aggressive tumors oncologists had ever seen, and due to a lack of funding, there was little research available on her type of tumor.

During her 18-month battle with cancer, Caroline never cried or complained. With an old soul and a big smile, she simply lived her life to the fullest. At age five, Caroline passed away, not because of a lack of technology, but due to the simple lack of research. The Caroline Symmes Endowment for Pediatric Cancer Research at Riley Hospital for Children is the gift she leaves behind so that every child can just live.

Why we’re important: A child is diagnosed with cancer every hour in the United States. Worldwide, more than 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. 60% of pediatric cancer survivors develop a chronic health condition due to the harsh treatments. The causes of most childhood cancers remain unknown and are, at present, unpreventable. Simply put, there just isn’t enough funding for pediatric cancer research. Because of this, diagnosed children are going without much-needed treatments not for a lack of technology, but for the lack of research and understanding around the cancers themselves.

How we affect the community: There’s no better avenue for pediatric cancer research than Riley Hospital for Children.

Every year, more than 300,000 children from all of Indiana’s 92 counties become Riley patients. That means almost everyone in Indiana knows a Riley family. The doctors and researchers at Riley have the passion to heal our children.

They have the science to find answers. They just need the funding to make it happen. That’s where we need you.

What we do: The Caroline Symmes Cancer Endowment mission is to raise funds to create a Pediatric Non-Central Nervous System (Non-CNS) Solid Tumor Program at Riley.

Our startup goal is $8 million. Reaching this goal would ensure rapid return on investments, as this will be the only program of its kind in the world that includes both clinical care and pediatric research to find new, lifesaving treatments for children battling high-risk tumors. Since 2011, we’ve raised $2.2 million, getting us closer to this goal. There’s still a long way to go, however, in funding this program.

The Pediatric Non-CNS Solid Tumor Program will include two related research strategies—individualized profiling in which our team of researchers will use gene profiling to identify biomarkers that predict which therapies will be most effective for each child, and new cancer therapy work that involves developing new drugs to fight childhood cancers that are resistant to other therapies and moving them rapidly into the clinic to help children.

The scientists on our team will focus on childhood cancers known as Non-CNS Solid Tumors, which include but are not limited to: Ewing’s Sarcoma, a malignant tumor that grows in bones or soft tissue near bones; neuroblastoma, a cancerous tumor that develops from nerve tissue; osteosarcoma, the most common type of bone cancer, often affecting teens; retinoblastoma, a cancerous tumor that grows in the retina,

THE CHILDREN’S DYSLEXIA CENTER OF INDIANAPOLIS

Who we are: The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Indianapolis belongs to a family of 501(c)(3) tutoring centers established in 1994 by the Scottish Rite Freemasons. These Centers were developed jointly by clinicians in collaboration with the Language Disorders Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University. There are now more than 40 centers in 13 states.

Millions of children with dyslexia endure frustration and demoralization on a daily basis as they struggle to acquire skills that many of us take for granted. If your child is struggling with reading and writing, how do you know if dyslexia is the cause? Where can you go for help?

The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Indianapolis tackles the challenge of dyslexia head-on, both by providing free tutoring for children with dyslexia and by training a growing cadre of highly skilled and dedicated tutors.

Although dyslexia affects at least 15% of the population, it is not systematically identified or adequately treated in the public school systems. This disorder is well understood and is treatable through one-on-one tutoring techniques such as those practiced at the Center.

Most students complete this program in two to three years, having closed or greatly narrowed the gap separating them from their non-dyslexic peers. The corresponding gain in self-esteem is critical to academic advancement and helps sustain positive relations with family and society.

What we do: The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Indianapolis’ successful treatment for dyslexia involves exclusive use of a multisensory educational program known as the Orton-Gillingham instructional approach. Students receive one-on-one tutoring twice a week after school. Each session is 50 minutes long.

Each child receives individual attention, generally with the same tutor throughout the program, which contributes to the success of the child. Thus, every child benefits from a continuity and focus that cannot be duplicated in a public school environment.

Who we are: Founded in 2001, The Children’s TherAplay Foundation is a non-profit pediatric rehabilitation clinic located in Carmel, Indiana.

What we do: Children’s TherAplay is one of the few clinics in the country dedicated to providing physical and occupational therapies on horseback for children with special needs. Our therapists combine a sensory-rich, child-centered clinic with hippotherapy–the movement of horses–to provide carefully graded motor, sensory, and neurological input in customized, one-on-one treatments.

CHRISTAMORE HOUSE GUILD Who we are: The Christamore House Guild, founded in 1908 by Martha Stewart Carey, is a non-profit organization that raises money for the Christamore House through fundraising efforts.

The Christamore House Guild’s Book & Author Benefit Luncheon. The proceeds from these events support the Christamore House and the Frances Carter Coburn Scholarship Fund. The Fund’s scholarships are designed to offer supplemental college aid to students from the Haughville area. The financial contributions made by the Christamore House Guild are the largest source of private support available to the Christamore House. EASTERSEALS CROSSROADS Who we are: Easterseals Crossroads is your community resource dedicated to serving individuals with disabilities as they live, learn, work and play. One of over 70 Easterseals affiliates throughout the country, we are a United Way agency offering CARF-accredited programs in Indiana.

Audrey works with our therapists to help her learn to be as independent as possible; her family wanted a team who could push her toward this goal and found it with our qualified staff.

How we affect the community: We help achieve positive outcomes for the many people who use our services. This past year, we served a total of 7,250 individuals with disabilities or special needs. Many of the individuals we serve have no other means of accessing assistance; their needs would go unmet without our services.

What we do: We help people become or remain as independent as possible through our autism services, children’s therapy, adult day and deaf services. Our driving program, early intervention and assistive technology services offer opportunities for people to learn or relearn skills. Our employment programs assist veterans and individuals with disabilities with employment options to improve the quality of their lives. Our respite and camp programs provide opportunities for children and families to engage and enjoy play. Easterseals Crossroads is changing the way the world defines and views disability by making profound, positive differences in people's lives every day–something we have been proud to do for more than 80 years.

How you can help: Our ability to deliver much-needed services can be threatened by lack of funding or insufficient funding in any given program year. Our goal is to be the resource any one of us could need at any point in our lives, and your support can make that goal a reality.

People like Bonnie, who has multiple sclerosis and needed home modification services for her bathroom so that she could safely remain as independent as possible in her home.

Our professionals provided the evaluation and oversaw the renovations to ensure that her needs were met throughout the entire remodel.

People like Ashley, who wanted to drive, yet feared that her learning disability and anxiety might prevent that from happening. She and her mother contacted us for driver evaluation and training services. Ashley worked diligently with one of our certified driver rehabilitation specialists/ occupational therapists for six months. With family support from Ashley’s mother during practice sessions, Ashley accomplished her goal and obtained her license. Learning with a disability can present certain challenges; our professional staff know that varying approaches can lead to attaining goals.

People like 5-year-old Audrey, who loves to watch movies, do puzzles, play games and (not) eat what her parents want her to eat. Audrey was born with arthrogryposis, which affects her muscles and her joints. She uses a walker and leg braces and she is “just starting to realize that she is different and not like other kids at her school,” according to mom, Ashley.

ESCAPE FOUNDATION, INC. DBA MARA ELEPHANT PROJECT

What we do: Mara Elephant Project (MEP) protects elephants to conserve the greater Mara ecosystem by deploying antipoaching patrols, managing human-elephant conflict (HEC), monitoring, collaring and researching elephants, engaging the local community and working with partners to achieve best land use practices.

How you can help: As poaching has declined, humanelephant conflict is increasing. HEC is not only the greatest single threat to elephants, but is also a major challenge to the livelihoods of those who live in close proximity to elephants.

In 2010, only two elephants were killed as a result of HEC, and in 2016 that number has increased to 14. This poses multiple challenges for MEP as we are trying to protect elephants and at the same time safeguard the interests of people. MEP has been at the forefront of innovative approaches to mitigating HEC and responding to conflict situations, but more resources are needed to be successful.

Your support helps MEP reach our goals. We want to reduce the Percentage of Illegally Killed Elephants (PIKE) to under 20% within two years and 10% within five years. We want to replicate MEP’s method in the remaining unprotected areas of the greater Mara ecosystem and into the Serengeti where no capacity currently exists to protect elephants and local communities. We need to secure vital migration corridors and dispersal areas and see them leased as conservancies plus implement an effective national and county elephant strategy that secures space for elephants and other wildlife for generations to come. Finally, we need to increase MEP’s community engagement program fostering support for wildlife and conservation.

In the face of numerous social, economic and environmental issues, it is critical that MEP focuses on specific issues and activities where it has a recognized strength. Through partnerships, MEP seeks to leverage the resources, knowledge, networks and strengths of other stakeholders to enhance our impact. Why we’re important: There are an estimated 352,000 African elephants left in the wild. From 2007 to 2014 between 25,000 – 35,000 elephants were killed yearly for their ivory; that’s one elephant killed every 15 minutes. In the 21st century, more than any other time in history, elephants are under a greater threat from increasing human encroachment on their rangelands resulting in habitat loss. In ecological and conservation terms elephants are considered a “landscape species”: they require a large and diverse area to live; have significant impact on the structure and function of natural ecosystems; are culturally and economically important; and are particularly vulnerable to human related land-use practices. The protection of elephants is the protection of biodiversity.

How we affect the community: MEP operates in the greater Maasai Mara region in Kenya, sharing its border with the vast Serengeti ecosystem, home to 3,000 elephants. Poaching and rising levels of HEC threaten elephants in the Maasai Mara. In response to these threats, MEP has developed an effective number of interdependent programs to protect both elephants and the communities that live with them. First, MEP has trained and deployed a team of over 30 rangers from the local community that conduct regular anti-poaching patrols and provide rapid response to safeguard elephants from poaching and mitigate HEC. Second, MEP over time has collared a total of 38 high-risk elephants that represent about 600 elephants in the ecosystem. Our current collared elephants are monitored 24 hours a day with near realtime collar data that is received on rangers' mobile devices. Third, MEP works with local communities who live alongside elephants and has developed an HEC toolkit to protect communities and the crops of local farmers from raids by elephants, which can destroy their source of food and income in a single night. These include the Karen Blixen Camp Ree Park Safari helicopter that enables MEP to increase our rapid response time and quickly and effectively mitigate HEC. Additionally, unmanned aerial vehicles that rangers can deploy are cheap and easy to use as are chili fences that deter elephants from farms.

The MEP method is working in the Mara. In 2012, when MEP was established, 96 elephants were killed for their ivory. Contrast that with eight elephants in 2016, and while a number of factors have contributed to the decline in poaching, MEP with its intelligence network, collaboration with other conservation organizations and anti-poaching teams has undoubtedly made a major contribution.

EXODUS REFUGEE IMMIGRATION Who we are: Every day, millions of courageous persons flee their homelands due to unimaginable persecution. They seek refuge and human rights in other places around the world, including Indianapolis, Indiana. Since 1981, Exodus Refugee Immigration has welcomed refugees to Indianapolis and offered them a place to call home. We began our work serving Cuban refugees who had arrived as part of the Mariel boatlift in 1980. Since that time, Exodus has helped thousands of refugees from more than 33 different countries establish new lives in Indiana.

As an independent, non-sectarian, 501(c)(3), and nonprofit agency, Exodus is part of a network that works with Church World Service in the resettlement of refugees. Our board of directors, staff and volunteers are passionate about securing the dignity and human rights of people around the globe.

Our primary goal is to provide refugees with the skills, information and support they need to be successful in their new lives in the United States. In 2017, we welcomed 501 refugees from countries such as as Burma, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Syria, Eritrea, Iraq and Somalia.

Why we’re important: There are more refugees in the world today than at any point since WWII and more than half are children. It is the greatest humanitarian crisis of our time. More than 65 million people are displaced around the world and 22.5 million meet the United Nation’s definition of a refugee: “a refugee is a person who, owing to a wellfounded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country.”

FACE LOW-COST ANIMAL CLINIC

Who we are: FACE Low-Cost Animal Clinic (FACE) is Indianapolis’ non-profit, low-cost animal clinic. Open six days a week and serving Central Indiana, the clinic provides affordable spay/neuter services, along with medical and wellness care for companion animals and community cats. Since opening in 1999, FACE has performed more than a quarter-of-a-million spay/neuter surgeries, which has contributed to a 90% reduction of euthanasia in our community.

How we affect the community: FACE serves the needs of 30,000 dogs and cats annually. FACE’s new clinic opened early in 2018, consisting of a 7,000-square-foot expansion to its current space at 1505 Massachusetts Ave. In addition to the renovation of the current clinic, a new second story addition has been constructed. For the first time, FACE will offer X-ray services on site, as well as additional diagnostic equipment.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK FOUNDATION Who we are: Founded in 2007 by five-time Grammy Award nominee Michael Feinstein, the Great American Songbook Foundation is affiliated with the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, Indiana, and is headquartered at the Center’s flagship venue, the Palladium concert hall. The Foundation’s mission is to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook—the timeless musical standards of pop, jazz, Broadway and Hollywood.

The Foundation is an official cultural affiliate of the Los Angeles-based Grammy Museum, one of only five institutions worldwide to share that distinction. The affiliates collaborate on exhibitions, educational initiatives, research programs, internship opportunities, technical support and more.

Why we’re important: The Songbook Archives attracts scholars and musicians from around the world to view historic sheet music, arrangements and other materials.

Because many of these items are one-of-a-kind artifacts in fragile condition, the Foundation has begun the process of digitally preserving its collections and making them available online.

On a more personal level, the Songbook Foundation provides a venue for young people to hear and learn about classic popular music and its cultural importance. Also, through programs such as Perfect Harmony, the Foundation offers activities that help senior citizens maintain their vitality. The Foundation was the first Indiana organization to be designated “Dementia Friendly” by the CICOA Agency on Aging.

What we do: The Foundation works to preser ve and advance America’s rich musical legacy through a range of initiatives, including: • The Songbook Archives & Library contain more than 100,000 documents, images, recordings, and other artifacts representing some of the greatest songwriters, arrangers and performers of the 20th century. Highlights include collections from composer-playwright Meredith Willson (The Music Man), the Andrews Sisters and songwriters Johnny Burke (“Swinging on a Star”), Gus Kahn (“It Had to Be You”) and Hy Zaret (“Unchained Melody”).

• The Songbook Exhibit Gallery at the Palladium presents rotating interactive exhibits that share the music, history and culture of the Songbook with thousands of visitors each year.

• The Songbook Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the Great American Songbook, with a new class inducted each year. Inductees have included songwriters Cole Porter, Jimmy Webb, and George and Ira Gershwin, along with performers Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli and Rita Moreno.

• The Songbook Academy Summer Intensive is a national performing arts program for high school vocalists and the only one of its kind dedicated to the music of the Great American Songbook. Each year, 40 young people selected from across the country experience a life-changing week of mentoring from Broadway stars and other performing arts professionals.

• Perfect Harmony provides therapeutic music programming for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other neurodegenerative conditions.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF HAMILTON COUNTY Who we are: Habitat for Humanity of Hamilton County is a local non-profit that serves those that live or work in the Hamilton County community. We are the only organization with the mission of providing the opportunity for families to own a home in Hamilton County.

Why we’re important: While the vast majority of Americans feel stable and secure in their current situation, housing insecurity touches nearly half of adults at some point in their lives. Many families in Hamilton County believe that it is challenging to find affordable quality housing in their communities. Such trade-offs may include taking second jobs, cutting back on health care and healthy food, and moving to less safe neighborhoods. We are the only organization that helps families get into an affordable home that they own located in an excellent school system and in safe communities.

HEAR INDIANA Who we are: Helen Keller said, “Blindness separates people from things; deafness separates people from people.” Hear Indiana empowers and supports children with hearing loss, seeking to ensure that they have the opportunity to communicate, learn and thrive independently through hearing and speaking. Originally formed in response to the lack of resources and support in our state, Hear Indiana has been filling service gaps for families for over 45 years. Since our inception, Hear Indiana has been a trusted, resourceful entity in the oftenconfusing world of hearing loss.

Last year, almost half of our medical billing revenue at the Speech & Hearing Resource Center was from a state-sponsored Medicaid program. Often, these families have no other place to go. Many services have low reimbursement rates or are not billable at all, including teletherapy for rural patients (via the internet), hearing aids, counseling, reading instruction and family education, which are all important aspects of our wrap-around model.

How we affect the community: Assistive technology and therapy not only open up a whole new world of possibilities for children with hearing loss—they are also very wise investments.

With modern technology and appropriate intervention, children with hearing loss have the potential to do and be anything they choose. Why we’re important: Hearing loss is a neuro-developmental emergency. Without access to sound or a visual language at the earliest possible moment, a child with hearing loss will fall behind his hearing peers very quickly. INDEPENDENCE ACADEMY Who we are: Independence Academy is a state-accredited, private, non-profit school for children in Grades 5-12 with high-functioning autism. Susan Le Vay and Ruth Padgett, mothers of sons with autism, shared a vision of a school that they could not find anywhere in Indianapolis. They envisioned a school that would challenge students academically, without overwhelming them, and incorporate necessary life and social skills every day. Our school was created by the determination and love of these two amazing women.

How we affect the community: We help our students to become important and contributing members of society. At the same time, we work to educate the larger community on what it means to be on the autism spectrum. We have amazing students who are incredibly talented but oftentimes need a little help putting the puzzle pieces of autism together. We believe in our students and know the astounding success they can have when given the right support. We are working hard to get our message out into the community and to welcome students who need a very special school like ours.

What we do: We inspire and enable students with highfunctioning autism to achieve their highest level of independence and academic success. We have a very low student-to-teacher ratio of 6:1 and educators who are passionate about teaching students with autism. Students make progress in a caring and encouraging environment.

Many make friends for the first time and look forward to going to school. We provide a safe haven for students who often feel lost in other educational environments. We give our students a place to belong, a manageable pace, a pride in themselves and a path to success.

INDIANA CHILDREN’S WISH FUND Who we are: Indiana Children’s Wish Fund

other wish-granting organization. We have wonderful longterm relationships with many individuals and corporations in Indiana, and partner with hospitals throughout our state. Our events within the community have been a longstanding tradition for more than 25 years. Whether it is the Portrait of Wishes Ball, Christmas in the Kitchen at the Hyatt, or Celebrity Softball Game at Victory Field, we have had a presence in the city and brought some wonderful events to the community.

What we do: Indiana Children’s Wish Fund grants wishes to Indiana children between the ages of 3-18 who suffer from a terminal or life-threatening illness. The wishes we grant are referred to us by medical professionals and individuals throughout our state. Although we do not service children with chronic illnesses, often children may have a combination of difficulties that collectively make their situation life-threatening. Our medical board reviews each case on an individual basis. Our goal is to create a relationship with our families that will last a lifetime.

How you can help: Monetary donations are always appreciated. We are an event-driven organization, so attending one of our events or donating to our silent auctions is another way to help. If you have a desire to volunteer your time at one of our events, please contact us to begin that process. Remembering us in your planned giving or will is another way to help us grant wishes. Why we’re important: Quite simply, we grant wishes. But beyond that, we continue to grant experiences for our wish families long after their wish has been granted. We bring joy, happiness and smiles to the faces of very ill children and their families during the most difficult of times. We create memories that last a lifetime. We give hope. The most popular wish our children make is for a trip to Disney World, where our Wish families spend a magical time away from treatments, doctors and tears. The entire family spends a week at Give Kids the World Village in private family villas. Included in this once-in-a-lifetime trip are passes to all Disney Parks, Universal Studios and Sea World. Other wishes include meeting celebrities, once-in-a-lifetime trips to France, Ireland, England and Turks & Caicos, shopping sprees, meeting the Pope, traveling to India to work with Mother Theresa, playhouses, room makeovers and many other dreams that stem from children’s imaginations. Who we are: Each year, the Indianapolis Art Center offers hundreds of art classes, more than 100 exhibitions in six galleries, the OneAmerica Broad Ripple Art Fair and an outreach program that takes art to almost 1,000 children in underserved communities. Founded in 1934 as a Works Progress Administration program during the Great Depression, the center has evolved and now inhabits one of Indianapolis' only Michael Graves-designed buildings, which sits on a 9.5-acre stretch along the banks of the White River in Broad Ripple.

THE INDIANAPOLIS METROPOLITAN POLICE DEPARTMENT HORSE PATROL ASSOCIATION

Who we are: The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Horse Patrol Association (HPA) is dedicated to making the Mounted Unit of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department the premier unit in the United States.

The Horse Patrol Association became a nonprofit (501)(c)(3) April 1990 by a group of caring business owners who were interested in promoting and financially assisting the Mounted Unit of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

counting officer salaries and on-person equipment like radios and firearms, the City of Indianapolis has been able to allocate just $30,000-$40,000 a year in public funding to the Mounted Patrol Unit. That money is quickly consumed by the costs of feeding and housing our city’s police horses. The Horse Patrol Association requires revenues of about $50,000 a year to operate efficiently.

Taxpayers receive a tremendous value in this arrangement, from excellent police work, highly skilled officers, beautiful and highly trained horses, to the addition of adaptive and creative patrol units on Indianapolis streets.

We’re also raising $5 million for the construction of new stables and offices for our officers. It’ll be the first permanent home for our officers and their horses in nearly 20 years. It will be something our city can truly be proud of, a new home for our equine partners against crime.

What we do: The Horse Patrol Association supports the Mounted Unit of the IMPD by purchasing quality horses and equipment, providing officer training, promoting the unit through parade participation, and providing grooming supplies, medications, supplements, office equipment and veterinary care.

The association has purchased all horses for the unit since 1988 and leases them to the city for $1 per year. The association is able to give the retiring horses to an officer or help the unit find an appropriate retirement for the animal.

Why we’re important: The Mounted Patrol Unit works as a team, with their equine partner and other IMPD officers, to manage crowds with the least amount of force necessary to maintain the peace, doing so while protecting the public, officers, and mounts, and avoiding injury and mitigating disturbances.

How we affect the community: Officers in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Mounted Unit are highly trained and skilled to serve on horseback, and have all the same arrest powers and training as every other IMPD officer. The mission of the Mounted Patrol Unit is to serve and protect the community while on horseback. Mounted officers are also charged with maintaining good community relations, enforcing laws and maintaining the peace.

THE JULIAN CENTER Who we are: The Julian Center is Indiana’s largest and most comprehensive provider of services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence and stalking. We provide a multitude of residential and non-residential services for survivors of every age, gender, race, ethnic background, faith and socioeconomic circumstance. Our mission is to empower survivors of domestic and sexual violence and end the generational cycle of violence. Our vision is to create a community where every individual is safe and respected.

spot someone who may need assistance, recognize the signs of abuse in their own lives and advocate for someone who needs help. Our community partners include law enforcement agencies, other social service agencies and anyone interested in helping end the generational cycle of domestic and sexual violence. With the help of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, we have established one of the largest domestic violence intervention initiatives in the nation.

Working hand-in-hand with IMPD, we attempt to identify early signs of domestic disturbances that might escalate to a domestic violence situation at a later time.

What we do: Although our emergency shelter is the heart of our services, our work reaches beyond the walls of our shelter and deep into our community to transform the lives of survivors and their families. Through individualized plans, we help survivors recognize their strengths and gain the skills and confidence they need to change the context of their lives.

Our services include a 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency shelter, community education and outreach, transitional and permanent housing, individual and family counseling, art and play therapy, and assistance with legal service resources.

The Julian Center also offers employment readiness, and economic empowerment programs, law enforcement agency partnerships, the Thrifty Threads community thrift shop and a food pantry.

Between 3,000 and 4,000 people receive direct services each year and an additional 3,000 people receive information offering services through outreach efforts.

How you can help: The Julian Center is a community agency which is able to work best when the community works with us. It cost $11,000 each day to operate the Julian Center shelter and our additional services and programs. Financial contributions fuel our ability to provide direct benefit to those who need it most. In addition, we welcome donations of clothing, household items, furniture, toiletries and other items that can be used by survivors or sold in our Thrifty Threads thrift store. Proceeds from sales directly support the operation of our emergency shelter. We also accept donations of serviceable, low-maintenance vehicles that we give directly and without charge to survivors who need them.

We’re eager to help individuals learn more about our work through volunteer opportunities at our shelter or at Thrifty Threads.

The Julian Center can also provide a speaker for your group or organization to help educate the community about the prevalence of domestic and sexual violence. Together we can create a stronger community. And we would love to see you at any of the number of fundraising events we hold throughout the year, including our annual Hoops and Heroes basketball game between the first responders of IMPD and Indianapolis Fire Department.

Why we’re important: Domestic and sexual violence is present in every community. Abuse can be verbal, mental, economic, emotional, sexual and physical and happens in households of every race, religion or socio-economic level.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in three women and one in four men have been or will be victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

Half of our Julian Center shelter residents are children, and 50% of those children are under the age of five.

More than 87% of those we serve fall below the federal poverty guidelines. For survivors who are able to remove themselves from immediate danger and don’t require the services of our emergency shelter, we provide empowerment and advocacy to help them break free from their abusers. With the financial support of our donors, the Julian Center provides assistance to all of those who need it. And all of the Julian Center’s services are provided at no cost to those we serve.

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF CENTRAL INDIANA Who we are: Junior Achievement has a long history and strong reputation in Central Indiana, beginning with its formation in 1957. Since that time, JA has reached more than one million students through a variety of programs focused on career exploration and employability/life skills. For many years, JA has worked with volunteers from the business community to implement programs in the classroom and after school. In the 1990s, JA started Exchange City, a fifthgrade program, which involved an in-school component, followed by students spending a day operating a variety of businesses in a simulated city. This hands-on, experiential learning opportunity was very successful and became what is known today as JA BizTown. JA expanded K-12 in-school programs in 2010 and launched our newest program, JA JobSpark, in 2016. Student participation has increased from 10,500 in 2010 to 29,726 students in 2017. In addition, the percentage of students from underserved schools has increased from 27% in 2010 to 58% in 2017.

Through JA ‘s Empowering Success Initiative: • Students will experience the positive impact of multiple, meaningful interactions with volunteers from a variety of industry sectors delivering JA’s K-12 project-based learning programs.

• Students will graduate from high school with: 1) an understanding of their interests, talents and strengths 2) an awareness of high-demand industries, jobs and pathways 3) a personalized post-secondary action plan 4) a belief in their potential and 5) the employability/soft skills and life skills necessary to own their future success.

What we do: Junior Achievement of Central Indiana's mission is to empower young people to own their future success. JA educates and inspires young people in the areas of career exploration, employability/life skills, entrepreneurship, financial literacy and philanthropy through hands-on, experiential learning opportunities for children in kindergarten through high school.

JA in-school programs for grades kindergarten-12 are led by community volunteers, who have been trained by JA staff before making visits to local classrooms to share their knowledge and experience and lead a series of relevant, engaging hands-on activities. JA's in-school programs engage students with adult role models, teach them the basic concepts of business, expose them to a breadth of career opportunities and give them an appreciation for the value of education in achieving their future goals.

JA BizTown is taught by teachers using a four-week, in-class curriculum followed by a visit to the JA BizTown facility where students operate their own mini-town and act as producers and consumers.

JA JobSpark is a hands-on, two-day career expo meant to “spark” an interest in students and get them excited for their future. Eighth grade students visit eight career clusters engaging in hands-on, experiential activities and interact with local professionals working in a profession related to the cluster.

THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF INDIANAPOLIS Who we are: The Junior League of Indianapolis was founded in 1922 by a forward-thinking group of young women. Nearly a century later, we are still forward-focused on building a better Indy. The Junior League promotes voluntarism, develops the potential of women and improves our community through the effective action of trained volunteers.

now occurs annually. Our members volunteer for numerous non-profits in Indianapolis for a consecutive number of hours, day and night, that corresponds to the number of years since the league’s founding. In 2018, the members will serve for 96 hours straight.

How we affect the community: The JLI plays an important role in our community through our programs and through our training. Because of the experience they receive at the Junior League, our members are prepared to enact change in a real way. You can find JLI members serving on a variety of non-profit boards, working in volunteer management, executing some of the city’s most profitable fundraisers, running for local office and more.

What we do: The JLI is a membership and training organization focused on creating women leaders through effective community action. Our current community impact model is preparing students for academic success.

Through our community projects and assistance grants, we hope to affect Indianapolis for generations to come. We are currently partnered with Stephen Foster Elementary School (Indianapolis Public Schools No. 67 ) and School on Wheels, and are passionate about improving the lives of children through high-quality educational programming.

How you can help: We are extremely involved in our Indianapolis community, and we hope you will consider getting involved with us. Membership is open to all women in Central Indiana who are at least 22 years old, and our membership spans all the way to women in their 90s. We have many recruitment events year-round, and new member classes begin each June and December.

We would love to have your financial support to help us keep striving for a bigger effect in our community focus area. Why we’re important: In 2014, we launched a signature project called Partners Advancing Student Success. Having begun a school-based food pantry in partnership with Gleaners in 2015, we continue to provide the volunteers to have it open each and every week. We also refreshed the school’s media center, donating more than 1,200 books to help provide students with age-appropriate and enriching learning tools.

During the past several years, the JLI has given nearly $1 million in community assistance and trust fund grants. Community assistance grant recipients focus on preparing students for academic success. Our largest grant winner for 2017 was Westminster Neighborhood Services, which received $25,000 to support its Summer Program, which provides academic enrichment, hands-on learning opportunities, field trips and three meals per day to its participants. Our trust fund grant recipients, on the other hand, benefit children with physical or mental disabilities.

The opportunity to support such organizations speaks to our very first community project in 1922: providing funding and volunteers to open the Occupational Therapy department at Riley Hospital for Children.

MAGIC THREAD CABARET Who we are: Magic Thread Cabaret is a non-profit performing arts group, operated by Klein & Alvarez Productions, LLC, with Dustin Klein serving as its artistic director and Tom Alvarez as its managing director. It seeks to expose audiences to cabaret of the highest quality, promote the Great American Songbook and provide employment and educational opportunities for local performers, musicians and theater technicians. Our name refers to that mystical thread that connects the singer and the song with members of an audience—thus our tagline “Connecting songs to the soul.”

How we affect the community: We complement and enrich the community's quality of life by providing entertainment of the highest artistic quality. Our inaugural presentation on Thanksgiving weekend in 2017, featuring the 2015 Great American Songbook Ambassador Lucas DeBard, was both a box office and a critical success. Our 2018 season, featuring four vocalists presenting at The Cat Theatre located in Carmel, offers yet another entertainment option, one which is sophisticated and urbane, in the heart of one of the most vibrant cities and fastest-growing counties in Indiana.

What we do: We present vocalists along with accompanying musicians in a season of four performances each year at The Cat Theatre, an intimate club-like setting. We also participate in the IndyFringe Theatre Festival, held each August, and other community events. As far as the art form itself, the “New York Times” described it as: “The peak cabaret experience is a three-way relationship among singer, song and audience in which performers with formidable acting skills, whose interpretations make you hear songs as though for the first time, pour their life experiences in thematic shows. In the shouting, brawling world of mainstream pop, the essential qualities of a cabaret performance—intimacy, emotional vulnerability and interpretive subtlety have little place.”

NOBLE Who we are: Noble was founded in 1953 by families of children with disabilities who wanted to offer their children what society would not: an education. Since then, Noble has evolved into a community organization focused on one mission: to expand opportunities and enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families through individualized services.

Unfortunately, many individuals with disabilities do not have this freedom. Instead, they are given a narrow list of options from which to make important life choices. That’s why Noble’s work is far from over. We will not rest until we achieve our vision: A world in which children and adults of all abilities live out their dreams in a community that embraces their contributions and recognizes them as fully participating members of our society.

To realize this vision, we offer individualized services shaped around the dreams and needs of each person we serve, and lead our community in welcoming their contributions.

What we do: Throughout Central and Eastern Indiana, Noble provides an array of services to children and adults with disabilities like Down syndrome and autism. Over 90% of our services are provided in our community within the homes, schools and businesses where the people and families we serve live their lives and dream their dreams.

Our services range from First Steps early intervention therapies for babies and toddlers to employment services for adults. We also support families through respite, educational forums and support groups. Today, we impact the lives of over 2,400 children and adults each year through our services, supports and advocacy.

How you can help: Government reimbursement for our services covers only 73% of our operating expenses. We work hard to stretch every dollar, but each year Noble faces the challenge of providing the high-quality supports and services that children and adults with developmental disabilities need and deserve.

THE ORCHARD SCHOOL Who we are: The Orchard School is a progressive nonsectarian, independent school founded in 1922. For more than 95 years, we have been the leader in progressive education in Central Indiana.

Speaking of our world, The Orchard School was proud to welcome two cultural exchange students to our campus in the fall of 2017. These two middle school students, both from Guatemala, were part of the Jump the World Program.

The experience proved to be beneficial for both the exchange students and our own students. The Orchard School also has a partner school in Japan. Every other summer, a group of students travels to Japan with one of our beloved teachers.

Our students dedicate an origami mosaic created by our sixth grade students to the Peace Park in Hiroshima.

OUTSIDE THE BOX Who we are: Outside the Box supports more than 300 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The outcome for all people, whether employees or participants, is that we are immersed in the opportunity for individualized growth. Whether in the curriculum-based day program, the creative arts experience of Studio OTB, or our customized Employment Services, we want all people to be the best they can be.

Because of the need for supports that are designed to help individuals obtain meaningful employment, develop successful peer relationships and have opportunities to work in settings that are inclusive and supportive of their needs, Outside the Box plans to expand its current program offerings with a tri-fold approach. We are working to design and create a satellite campus that will house: eight classrooms for programming aimed at pre-employment readiness; a café staffed by persons with disabilities; and a multipurpose event space, which will allow for opportunities for community members to come in and learn about the value of employing and working alongside our program participants, and also host private events such as weddings, showers and corporate events. It is our hope that the future of supports for persons with disabilities continues to focus on inclusion and the celebration of unique abilities and strengths. We are thrilled to evolve alongside a community that has been so supportive of our efforts to impact the lives of the individuals we support!

What we do: As adults, you and I choose how we spend our days and with whom we spend our time. For individuals with developmental disabilities, days are often spent at local day centers—on activities that may not be engaging or inspiring. Time is spent in large groups with other individuals, and even staff, who likely do not intimately “know” them. At OTB, days are truly customized. Instead of pushing people toward generic programming options, we strive to meet the individual where they are, focusing on their capabilities, not their disabilities. We do this through three programmatic avenues: Day Service, Employment Service, and Studio Art Service.

Why we’re important: OTB’s programs are incredibly unique, as we are one of the only providers in Indiana that matches participants in small groups sharing a bond of age, personality, interests and personal goals, making it possible to assess and to meet the individual needs of participants.

SECOND HELPINGS Who we are: Second Helpings is a unique Central Indiana initiative that brings together the resources of our community to eliminate food waste, combat hunger, strengthen critical social ser vice agencies and help unemployed and underemployed adults build meaningful careers and futures.

How we affect the community: Many of our hunger relief meals go to places like the Boys & Girls Clubs in Indianapolis, Lebanon and Noblesville, making sure kids have a good meal at the end of the day. Other meals are provided free of charge to agencies like Wheeler Mission Ministries or the Julian Center, allowing them to focus their resources on their core missions. Because Second Helpings works with millions of pounds of donated food and the gifts of hundreds of volunteers, each dollar invested in the hunger-relief program saves our community more than $4 in food costs.

What we do: Our work begins with food rescue.

Wholesalers, retailers and restaurants provide prepared and perishable foods–more than 2.5 million pounds per year–that are used by staff and volunteers to create 4,000 hot, nutritious meals each day. Those meals are delivered free of charge to 85 social service organizations serving children, seniors and families in need. At the same time, the Second Helpings Culinary Job Training program prepares adults for careers in the food service industry, helping students build a better future for themselves and their families. More than 750 adults have graduated from this program, and Second Helpings alumni are now working in Central Indiana as cooks, executive chefs, business owners and culinary instructors. The work of Second Helpings is fueled by the gifts of our community–employers, financial donors, food donors and volunteers all coming together to transform lives and build a stronger, healthier community.

ST. JOSEPH INSTITUTE FOR THE DEAF Who we are: St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf is highly recognized as a long-standing national leader in deaf and hard-of-hearing education. Our staff is a group of uniquely trained and dedicated professionals with the sole mission of helping young children learn to listen, speak and develop academically and socially with the intent of preparing them to transition into local schools with great success.

How we affect the community: Although St. Joseph Institute serves a small percentage of the population, our role as the only full-time school in Indiana that teaches very young children who are deaf how to speak is vital in the community.

Many states do not have a school like St. Joseph Institute. Our staff consists of highly skilled professionals, many of whom serve as leaders on a national level. For parents who want to help their hearing-impaired child learn to listen and speak, SJI can have a profound effect on lifelong success.

What we do: We teach young children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing how to speak. Through the use of advanced technologies including cochlear implants and hearing aids, children with hearing loss can have access to sound. Once a young child hears sound, our team of specialists works with the child and family on listening abilities, language development and literacy skills to prepare the child to be educationally on par with hearing peers.

How you can help: It is rooted in our mission to never turn away a child or family in need of service; this is a commitment we take very seriously. While SJI receives some state funding support, because we serve families statewide, the gap between the cost of providing services and funds received is dramatic. More than 50% of the families we serve are low-income households.

There are many ways to make a difference in the lives of our children. You can provide weekly speech therapy to a baby or toddler through our Sponsor a Family program, designate SJI as a recipient of your corporate gift-matching program, consider hosting or sponsoring an event, or join our Founder’s Circle by making an annual pledge of $1,000 or more. We also welcome volunteers to help with outdoor landscaping or gardening, assist in our classrooms or serve on a committee. Tax-deductible donations may be made by mail or online at sjid.org.

Why we’re important: St. Joseph Institute offers a variety of Listening and Spoken Language services. We provide a continuum of support beginning with early intervention (birth to age three) as Indiana’s only First Steps provider of LSL services. We offer a full-time preschool and a primary school to prepare children for transition into community school systems. Once a child is ready to transition to a community school, SJI provides ongoing mainstream support for the child, parents and professional staff. For families who are unable to receive direct services from an SJI staff member in person, we provide Internet-based teletherapy that allows a child to access real-time educational sessions anywhere in the state from the comfort of his or her home. SURVIVORS OF VIOLENCE FOUNDATION Who we are: Established in 2002, the Survivors of Violence Foundation provides hope and compassionate healing to survivors of violence. We offer reconstructive treatment that provides physical, mental and emotional healing for those with painful physical injuries or disfigurements caused by violence or abuse. The foundation’s work alleviates suffering and improves the quality of life for survivors with the greatest financial and health care needs.

Improving scars and non-healing wounds requires multiple treatment sessions and multiple treatment methods. The funds raised through the foundation help cover the cost of these treatments. THE VILLAGES Who we are: Serving more than 3,000 children each day in Indiana, The Villages champions every child’s right to a safe, permanent and nurturing home. Established in 1978, The Villages has grown into a nationally known, fully accredited, statewide organization that offers a diverse array of programs and services for abused, neglected and at-risk children and their families.

Why we’re important: Indiana’s child welfare system is facing a crisis, with an unprecedented number of children being removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect in 2017. Referred to as a “tsunami,” nearly 29,000 children flooded Indiana’s child welfare system last year. The Villages, one of only 2% of child and family service agencies that are fully accredited by the prestigious Council on Accreditation, is highly qualified to address this growing crisis and is passionate about “championing families” for these vulnerable children.

What we do: The V illag es of Indiana provides a comprehensive array of family services including: • Adoption. The Villages offers private, international and special-needs adoption services, providing preparation, education, placement and support to families throughout their adoption journey.

• Children’s Village Child Development and Education Centers. Quality, accredited child care and early childhood development services for children ages six weeks through kindergarten are provided from our Level 4 “Paths to Quality” centers in Indianapolis and Bloomington, and Early Head Start Programs are provided at Children’s Village Indianapolis.

• Dads Inc. Support and education for fathers is provided to help them develop healthy relationships and positive engagement in their children’s lives.

• Family Services and Community Partners. The Villages strengthens individuals, families and communities through counseling, education, mentoring and support services.

• Healthy Families. Education and training to first-time, at-risk parents to help strengthen the parent-child relationship is provided in each family’s home, assuring a safer, healthier and more nurturing beginning for babies.

• Kinship Care. The Villages Family Connection Network supports grandparents and kinship caregivers who are “parenting” their grandchildren, empowering families and enabling them to achieve and sustain a stable, positive family experience.

• Older Youth Services (Transitional Living). Vulnerable teens aging out of the foster care system are provided with extensive life skills training in a community-based living environment to help them become self-sufficient and achieve success educationally and vocationally.

• Therapeutic Foster Care. When children are removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect, they are placed in nurturing and loving foster care homes through The Villages.

How we affect the community: Annually, 89% of children served by The Villages foster care program are in only one home, providing stability while in-care and far exceeding state and national averages. In 2017, The Villages prioritized the recruitment and training of qualified, nurturing foster parents to address the growing need for additional foster homes. The Villages is also very proud that 93 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to services for the children, youth and families we are privileged to serve. More than 11,000 vulnerable children and families are impacted by the wide array of programs and services The Villages provides each year.

How you can help: The Villages would be unable to provide enrichment activities to our children, youth and families without the support of generous donors.

Contributions help provide after-school tutoring for foster and kinship children; driver’s education classes for an Older Youth Services client; summer camp experiences; and trips to the zoo, museum or other summer activities— common things that many people take for granted, but not The Villages children! By establishing the Road Rally event, second and third generations of the Woodard/Van Riper family proactively get involved with multiple charities. We’re helping teach “the art of giving back”!

What we do: We rally! Some charities are driven, other charities drive to success! We encourage charity personnel and their boards of directors to work together as teams and get to know each other better by creatively solving a driving, road sign quest. We host The Woodard/Van Riper Family Foundation Charity Road Rally. The Rally consists of 14 charity teams who embark on a four-leg, 100-mile car drive where the passenger and driver team answer “scavenger hunt” type questions relating to road signs, interesting monuments and landmarks you might see (or not see) when going on a road trip. This unique event also fosters interaction between participating foundation teams so that everyone involved better understands each charity’s needs and mission.

How you can help: Although The Woodard/Van Riper Family Foundation is self-funded, we’re always interested in sharing ideas and resources on how to make our city and surrounding towns better places to work, live and dream!

Why we’re important: We bring charities together! We help charities get to know one another in a competitive and social setting. Too often charities are competing for the same donors. By bringing 14 charities together to compete at a weekend event, charities get to better know each other. By bringing charities together, the safety net to our community grows wider and stronger than may have been the case before charity directors and teams knew each other by name.
