Every issue of Sophisticated Living Magazine we try to highlight the tri-state community in various ways. Whether through dining and home features, to arts and business leaders, to the ever-important philanthropic and society features, passion abounds in this community. None are quite as fun to work on, as much as those on the philanthropies and people who run them.

Since I started publishing Sophisticated Living over 3 and a half years ago, I made supporting charitable groups a priority in our editorial content. We continually support organizations and their major events, and attempt to bring their story to life each issue. As I have gotten to learn more and more about these organizations and the local community that supports them, I felt it a necessity to continue to educate our readers about these great organizations.

One obstacle I've noticed time and again is that it can be difficult for a cause to stand out. So we present to you, Sophisticated Giving Charity Register. A reference guide for non-profits, you will be provided a core overview of the ‘who, what, why’ for each organization, and of course the ever important ‘how’ we as a community can help support these meaningful groups. I also hope the comprehensive annual event calendar will be utilized throughout the year.

THE APARTMENT ASSOCIATION OUTREACH, INC. Who We Are: The Apartment Association Outreach is a 501(c) 3, non-profit charitable organization. OUTREACH was originally founded in 1991 to provide clothing and household items to families in need. Since 2000, we focus on 5 major programs to provide basic needs and emergency assistance to families and individuals in crisis. With the help of our social service partners they identify the need in our community. Our partners include Freestore Foodbank, Welcome House of Northern Kentucky, CAIN (Churches Active in Northside), Jewish Family Services and Santa Maria Community Services.

• Backpack supplies and distribution in conjunction with Santa Maria Community Services and the Price Hill Back to School Fair.

• Senior events held at affordable living facilities providing a hot meal and a fun game of Bingo.

• Scholarships recommended by our service partners for post-secondary education for at least 3 students. Also, industry related Scholarships are provided for candidates currently employed in the apartment industry for the National Apartment Association Education Institute designation programs.

What We Do: With the help of many volunteers and sponsors, each year 3 fundraising events are held to support our 5 programs. In the Spring we host a 5k 4 Rent event with a timed run and walk through beautiful Friendship Park along the river. In the Fall, we host a Night Out for Outreach with many industry leaders and the community in attendance.

This night is full of fun with music, great food, fundraising and a short program of our good deed. In December, we enjoy the Holiday Cheers for Outreach benefit party. Many gift items available with the purchase of Raffle tickets, Silent and Live Auctions.

Why We’re Important: We believe in building stable families, which in turn builds stable communities. Every day families and individuals are in need of housing, food, school supplies, continuing education and senior citizens who just need an inspiration of love. That’s where we step in so they don’t have to choose between paying their rent and buying food. We help fund our partners so they can identify those in need of rent assistance. The pantry shelves are usually empty when we arrive with food, providing food distribution twice a year. An education is important for learning life skills, a trade, a career or profession. We reach out to our partners for recommendations for scholarships.

AUTISM SOCIETY GREATER CINCINNATI Who We Are: Founded in 1971 by local parents and professionals, the Autism Society Greater Cincinnati’s (ASGC) mission is to improve the lives of all affected by autism. We envision a world where individuals and families living with autism can maximize their quality of life, are treated with dignity, and live in a society where their talents and skills are appreciated and valued.

We serve individuals with autism, families, caregivers, providers, and professionals working with the autism community in Greater Cincinnati. We cover three states and eight counties; Ohio: Hamilton, Butler, Clermont and Warren; Kentucky: Boone, Kenton, and Campbell; and Indiana: Dearborn.

How We Serve the Community: Our vision is to be a leading, trusted resource of information, support and programs that are valuable to all affected by autism. We are committed to meeting the needs of our community as it grows and the needs evolve over time. We are also connected to the larger autism community through partnerships with other local nonprofits; service providers; local, state, and federal leaders; and families and we leverage these partnerships to advance both the quantity and quality of support we provide.

What We Do: ASGC works to respond to the growing needs for access to more information and services for the estimated 35,000 individuals with autism in the Greater Cincinnati area. Our largest program is our Cincinnati Autism Connection helpline which individuals and families can access for information, resources and support from diagnosis through the lifespan. ASGC also offers weekend activities for preschoolers, elementary school children, and teenagers that are designed for fun, to build social skills, and for parents to connect for support and community. We also offer support groups for adults on the autism spectrum and their families.

Why We’re Important: Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the US. In 2018, the CDC estimated that 1 in 59 children in the US is diagnosed with autism. This means there is an increased need for support and resources to assist families in navigating this complex disorder throughout the lifespan. Families living with autism are under more stress according to the Autism Research Institute than families with neurotypical children and one of the top three stressors identified was the low level of support, one of the primary issues that ASGC addresses.

BAYLEY Who We Are: A non-profit ministry of the Sisters of Charity, Bayley is a continuum of care retirement and wellness community on the west side of Cincinnati. Offering living options and health-related programs ans services in a Christian environment, the administration, staff and volunteers promote well-being and independence for seniors on our campus and in the community. Bayley's mission is rooted in the values of respect, honesty and excellence and caregivers provide opportunities for residents and members to live 'Life in Every Moment' at all stages and abilities.

Fitness Club members, most from the local community, numbered 1800. The club is the hub where friends meet, socialize, work out and attend programs, encouraging safe and healthy lifestyles. Outpatient therapies helped 61 patients regain their strength and mobility while Bayley Home Services kept 117 seniors who live on campus or in the community “on their own, but not alone™!” Close to 140 members attended the Bayley Adult Day Program.

Careg iver support groups and dementia training workshops held throughout the year are open to all.

What We Do: The Bayley Village offers maintenancefree independent living in a secure, thriving neighborhood.

Assisted Living, Memory Support and Skilled Nursing Care comprise our living options, where physical, social, spiritual and emotional needs are met by our compassionate staff. The Wellness Center building houses the Fitness Club with classes, equipment and wellness programs for all adults. Our Adult Day Program, partnering with caregiving families, provides activities and professional care to seniors on our campus while Home Services provides anytime service in the home.

Bayley in-house rehabilitative and outpatient therapies help seniors’ maintain or regain optimal health.

How You Can Help: Bayley’s vision is to continue providing exceptional, compassionate care to seniors for generations to come, but we need additional support to make it happen. Charitable contributions are welcomed and we offer several giving options that include event sponsorships, memorial or tribute donations, society memberships and planned giving opportunities.

BEECH ACRES PARENTING CENTER Who We Are: Beech Acres Parenting Center has been serving parents, families and children in the Greater Cincinnati area for 170 years. Originally founded as an orphanage to address the cholera epidemic that gripped the nation, Beech Acres has consistently evolved to meet the ever changing needs of parents in the community. Our mission of inspiring and equipping today’s parents, families, and communities to raise capable, caring, contributing children has not changed since our inception and continues to guide our organization every day. THE BEECHWOOD HOME Who We Are: The Beechwood Home is a not-for-profit; long-term care skilled-nursing facility. We offer the area’s most comprehensive services for a wide range of neurodegenerative, cerebral vascular, spinal cord, and other medical conditions.

We specialize in providing high quality, long-term care together with advanced rehabilitation and restorative services, as well as therapeutic and recreational activities that optimize function and quality of life for our residents. The Beechwood Home currently has 80 beds in long-term nursing care services.

How We Ser ve the Communit y : Our customers / market niche consists of residents who have a debilitating neurological disease (i.e. 41%41% Multiple Sclerosis, 6% Cerebral Palsy, 6% CVA, 6% Huntington's, 17% ALS) mostly coming from our Tri-State area. There are additional diseases such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, Fredric's Ataxia, etc. There is a list of approximately 35 customers/clients awaiting admission to our facility.

Our customers are willing to wait for years to have the opportunity to live in a home with a level of independence they had long ago thought was lost.

What We Do: Beechwood Home has a niche in the neurologically impaired community. There are only two other facilities in the United States that can be compared to ours, in Philadelphia and in Boston. These homes are instrumental in serving the same type of disease population as we do; a very young population, need for specialized equipment due to their immobility and progression of their diseases, uniquely experienced, trained and knowledgeable medical staff with experience in working with the (non elderly or pediatric population). We are not a nursing home but a "home for our residents" to extend and improve their quality of life and not one to await decline and death. Most Long-Term Care Facilities' average occupancy rate is 80-85% where ours is almost always at 97-100%. Our challenge is how do we become the "best of the best", become recognized as a regional/national leader in our area of expertise and bring our services to those who wait patiently.

How You Can Help: Beechwood is a home primarily for people with a variety of neurological conditions, most of which are degenerative and incurable. Beechwood strives to provide the highest level of care possible to enable our residents the optimum quality of life and allow them to retain as much independence and dignity as possible. To do this, we must provide expensive high-tech equipment, training, and maintenance. In the past, we have relied on funding from Medicaid or other third-party payors. This requires many hours of documentation and justifications. We were faced with a potential decrease in Medicaid funding in 2018, in fact, our current reimbursement is the same today as it was in 2003. This financial detriment has had a definite impact on the amount of dollars we need to care for the residents. This year, because our residents rely on the generosity of others to provide special therapeutic programs and services, we need your support more than ever. The need is to sustain our Program’s and services for our residents mean finding opportunities to fill this a gap of over $120.00 per day per Medicaid resident, which causes this vital need for help from our Friends of Beechwood!

BETHANY HOUSE SERVICES, INC. Who We Are: Bethany House has provided emergency shelter for families experiencing homelessness since 1983.

Our mission is to empower homeless and at-risk families with the solutions to achieve housing stability and long-term selfsufficiency. Our vision is to live in a community where all families have a place to call home and no one spends a night without shelter. At Bethany House, six core values drive all of our interactions with parents, children, our community partners, and each other: Respect, Empowerment, Integrity, Excellence, Collaboration, and Hospitality.

How We Serve the Community: Eighty-two percent of the families who left shelter at Bethany House in 2016 have not returned to homelessness. Of the families who left shelter during 2018, 94% entered into positive housing. Bethany House Executive Director, Susan Schiller, received a 2018 Humanitarian of the Year Award from the city of Cincinnati for collaborating with city officials to alleviate family homelessness in our community. Bethany House provides safety, access to medical care, emotional support, mental health counseling, and the basic necessities of life to frightened, stressed families who have no other resource for protecting their children. Perhaps most importantly, Bethany House helps bring local families experiencing homelessness one step closer to home.

What We Do: Homeless families need a safe place to stay, food, and the basic necessities. We believe that all children deserve a warm bed to sleep in, food to eat, the opportunity for a good education, and most importantly, the stability of a home. Bethany House offers programs for homeless prevention, emergency shelter, housing programs, assistance after leaving shelter, and affordable housing.

The Bethany House Shelter Diversion program works to quickly find housing for families at imminent risk of losing their homes. For families already experiencing homelessness, our emergency shelters provide safety and life’s necessities in a Trauma Informed Care environment. In shelter, physical and emotional needs of all family members are met; BHS staff provides support and education as they help families find housing and learn self-sufficiency. Our housing programs assist families to identify and obtain housing, providing financial assistance and help in overcoming barriers to permanent housing.

How You Can Help: Financial donations are always needed, more so now than ever. 2018 was a year unlike any other in the 36 year history of Bethany House, as we served more families than ever. Nearly 1,200 individuals were sheltered, including almost 800 children. Bethany House is challenged to shelter, feed, and provide services to all of the families in our five shelters.

We need help with meals – dinner Monday through Thursday, and breakfast Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers are needed to provide childcare in the evenings while parents attend classes, and to help with yardwork, mailings, and organizing donations. CANCER FAMILY CARE Who We Are: Cancer Family Care is a nonprofit organization that helps children and adults cope with the effects of a cancer diagnosis in the family. We are known throughout the Greater Cincinnati region as a force of compassion and strength in the face of cancer-related illness and loss.

Additional services include free wigs, therapeutic massage and Healing Touch sessions for cancer patients and at reduced rates to caregivers. Our programs are available at six area offices, and to ensure continuity of care, our social workers and counselors are glad to make house calls, when necessary. Our Treehouse Children’s Program is schoolbased and offers both individual and group therapy for children and teens ages 5-18.

What We Do: Cancer Family Care provides individual, couple and family counseling to anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis or loss from the disease. Our therapists are all Master’s Level trained social workers and counselors. We also offer free wigs, oncology massage and Healing Touch to cancer patients and at a reduced rate to caregivers. Our Treehouse Children’s Program includes individual and group therapy in addition to Camp Courage, our day camp for children dealing with cancer or a cancer loss in the family.

How You Can Help: Our Treehouse Children’s Program is offered at no charge. Our adult counseling program does bill insurance if appropriate and co-pays are on a sliding fee basis if clients are able to pay. No one is ever turned away due lack of insurance coverage or ability to pay co-payments. The number one stressor for those dealing with cancer is finances. Because of United Way funding and our generous donors, we are able to help families deal with the added stress without incurring more financial hardships caused by counseling fees.

Why We’re Important: Over the next decade, the number of new cancer cases is expected to go up, mostly because of an aging population. Because cancer patients overall are living longer, the number of cancer survivors is expected to go up from about 11.7 million in 2007 to 18 million by 2020. People who have cancer may find the physical, emotional, and social effects of the disease to be stressful. People who are able to use effective coping strategies to deal with stress, such as relaxation and stress management techniques, have been shown to have lower levels of depression, anxiety, and symptoms related to the cancer and its treatment.

THE CHILDREN’S HOME OF CINCINNATI Who We Are: The Children’s Home of Cincinnati was founded in 1864 to provide adoption services and shelter for the poor and abandoned children of Cincinnati. Today, we have evolved by becoming the largest provider of mental health services in Cincinnati schools while simultaneously battling the challenges of mental health, poverty and access to individualized services. CINCINNATI ART MUSEUM Who We Are: The Cincinnati Art Museum features a diverse, encyclopedic art collection of more than 67,000 works spanning 6,000 years. CINCINNATI ASSOCIATION FOR THE BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED (CABVI) Who We Are: Founded in 1911, CABVI provides counseling, rehabilitation, information and employment services to people of all ages who have severe vision loss in the Greater Cincinnati region. Through all of its programs and services, it strives to help more than 5,700 people annually to lead full and independent lives. CABVI receives client referrals for services from local eye doctors, hospitals, schools, and other social service agencies in the Greater Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky area. Who We Are: The Community Action Agency (CAA) helps improve lives from cradle to career. CAA uses a broad range of public and private resources that give low to moderate-income families the opportunity to improve the quality of life for themselves, their families, and their communities.

How We Serve the Community: The Home Energ y Assistance Program (HEAP) is a program that assists Hamilton County residents with paying their utility bills.

From January-April, CAA provides tax return preparation services at no cost to individuals who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). We partner with the Freestore Foodbank to distribute free food to families in need through our Mobile Food Pantry.

What We Do: CAA serves 30,000 families in Hamilton County. More than 2,500 children from birth to 5 years old receive preschool education through the Early Head Start, Head Start or Home School program. We provide job placement training. The Career Pathways provides career counseling, resume assistance and job referrals.

CAA offers CDL training, construction training, and a manufacturing certification. We also prepare ex-offenders to re-enter the workforce. The Greater Cincinnati Microenterprise Initiative (GCMI) helps individuals start or expand their businesses. GCMI helps develop an entrepreneurial mindset, create a business plan and apply for business loan opportunities.

THE CINCINNATI INTERNATIONAL WINE FESTIVAL Who We Are: The Cincinnati International Wine Festival is a charitable, non-profit organization founded in 1991 to raise funds and distribute grants to area charities while promoting the wine industry. The festival will celebrate its 29th year of giving back one glass at a time March 7-9, 2019 at the Duke Energy Center, with Kroger as the presenting sponsor. THE CURE STARTS NOW Who We Are: The Cure Starts Now represents something truly different – a grassroots effort comprised of over 40 families/chapters in 4 countries dedicated to, not just fighting one cancer, but the elimination of all cancers by focusing on pediatric brain cancer. We believe as the experts do; that in order to truly cure cancer you have to focus on: • those cancers that are immune to conventional treatments • those cancers for which there are no treatments • those cancers that affect children • and those cancers that are the biggest bullies

How We Serve the Community: The Cure Starts now supports research and trials that provide treatment to over 3,000 children battling cancer worldwide every year. In collaboration with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, we’ve helped establish the first “virtual” hospital, connecting over 16 institutions across the globe to bring expert care and treatments closer to patients. We have funded two new drugs that are currently being used to treat children battling cancer.

GIRLS ON THE RUN GREATER CINCINNATI Who We Are: We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. We envision a world in which every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.

Coach, shares, “I am grateful to see first-hand how much of an impact this program has on its participants. I’ve watched my girls transform through speaking up and finding their voice in addition to pushing themselves to accomplish their goals. This program has not only united girls of different backgrounds and grade levels, but it taught them how to work as a team and make a difference in their community.”

What We Do: Girls on the Run (GOTR) Greater Cincinnati is a physical activity-based positive youth development (PYD) program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to successfully navigate life experiences.

The program’s intentional curriculum places an emphasis on developing competence, confidence, connection, character, caring, and contribution in young girls through lessons that incorporate running and other physical activities. The life skills curriculum is delivered by caring and competent coaches who are trained to teach lessons as intended. Locally, we serve 3,000 girls per year in 11 counties throughout the region.

How You Can Help: Girls on the Run is committed to serving every community with interest, regardless of the families’ abilities to pay. Our program costs $160 per girl, including curriculum materials, running shoes, a t-shirt, healthy snack at each lesson, and 5K experience. We offer the experience on a sliding scale, and 50% of our girls require a scholarship to participate. YOU can help us make a difference! Scholarships are funded by individual donors, corporate partners, grants, and peer fundraisers.

Additionally, we rely heavily on volunteers throughout the year – from coaching girls on a weekly basis, to 5K day volunteers and committee members.

GOOD SAMARITAN FREE HEALTH CENTER Who We Are: The Good Samaritan Free Health Center provides uninsured adults the care they need to enjoy a higher quality of life by serving as their patient-centered medical home. Located in Price Hill, we provide access to wraparound healthcare services to our more than 2,500 uninsured patients.

Volunteer providers are the primary source of care, and we do not bill for any services. THE HEALTHCARE CONNECTION Who We Are: Established in 1967, The HealthCare Connection (formerly the Lincoln Heights Health Center) was the very first community health center in the state of Ohio. THCC was founded by Dolores J. Lindsay, a health activist, in a four room apartment house with a $10,000 grant from the Village of Lincoln Heights. She, along with a handful of churches, volunteer physicians and dentists, pooled their resources and established a medical home that would provide prenatal, pediatric and dental care services for patients who had nowhere else to get the medical care they needed. Today, THCC has 7 locations including the Lincoln Heights Health Center, the Mt. Healthy Family Practice Center, the Forest Park Health Center, 2 Co-locations with Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health and 2 Princeton Viking School Based Health Centers.

HENRY HOSEA HOUSE Who We Are: Marking 26 years of service to the northern Kentucky/greater Cincinnati area, the mission of Henry Hosea House continues to focus on the provision of food and nourishment to the bodies and souls of the men, women and children of this great community.

Founded by Sister Mar y Dorgan, CDP in the Fellowship Hall of the First Church of the Nazarene in 1991, Henry Hosea House was built on bringing the northern Kentucky/Cincinnati communities together to serve the needy, elderly and homeless. We are the “soup kitchen” that serves full, hot and nutritious meals, seven days a week (200 plus meals per evening.) In addition to our meals, we reach out to the less fortunate by partnering with community members to create Thanksgiving Food Baskets as well as a Christmas Adopt-A-Family program.

How We Serve the Community: None of what we do would be possible without the support of more than 300 dedicated volunteers. Feeding 200 people each and every day is a daunting task, especially at times of the year when many of our diners come through our door damp and chilled. We offer these folks, whose best day is a trying one, a delicious meal, prepared with love and served with dignity in an atmosphere of hospitality and relaxation.

Those who arrive are never asked to sign in, register, present identification, or pay a single penny. They simply come in and enjoy a full, hot nutritious meal. Only God’s grace and His amazing angels bring this to reality.

Who We Are: IMPACT Autism™ is an all- volunteer charity that believes that both the quantity and quality of care options for those with autism are horribly deficient, especially for adults. We seek to change that and have formed an organization with the mission, the people and the ideas to move beyond the status quo. We raise funds to support innovative programs that change the status quo.

Why We’re Important: Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person’s ability to communicate, respond to surroundings, or form relationships with others. First identified more than 50 years ago, autism is now typically diagnosed by the age of two or three.

Autism knows no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries. Few disorders are more devastating to a child or his or her family. While some people with autism are only mildly affected, most with the condition will require lifelong care and will have significant language impairments. Sadly, many children with autism will never be able to tell their parents they love them.

LADD was founded in 1975 by parents of children with disabilities, and in 1976 established one of Cincinnati’s first education-based residential programs for independent living. Today, LADD serves nearly 500 people through a range of services including Community Supported Living, Supported Employment, Victory Parkway Group Homes, Find-A-Way and Geier Apartment Complexes, Adult Foster Care, a Community Connections Program, and a home-ownership program.

LIGHTHOUSE YOUTH & FAMILY SERVICES Who We Are: Lighthouse Youth & Family Services works to empower young people and families to succeed through a continuum of care that promotes healing and growth. All Lighthouse services are trauma-informed and designed to meet each individual’s needs, challenges, and goals. How We Serve the Community: Leading the effort to end youth homelessness in Cincinnati, Lighthouse is the only local agency focused on serving young people experiencing homelessness, offers the only local emergency shelter for ages 10-17, and is the largest provider of foster care in Hamilton County. Every night, 500 young people sleep under a Lighthouse roof. Staff members support young people and families seven days a week, providing the best services to young people and families when and where they need it most, whether in the office, home, school, or elsewhere.

The Lindner Center of HOPE is a non-profit, nationally recognized mental health center located in Mason, Ohio. MATTHEW 25: MINISTRIES Who We Are: Matthew 25: Ministries is an international humanitarian aid and disaster relief organization helping the poorest of the poor and disaster victims locally, nationally and internationally without regard to race, color, sex, religion, age, national origin, disability, or political belief. Matthew 25: Ministries provides food to the hungry, water to the thirsty, clothing to the naked, shelter to the homeless, medical aid and humanitarian supplies to those in need. MENTORING PLUS, INC. Who We Are: Beginning with a vision to serve the most needy with top quality care and services, Mentoring Plus was founded in April of 2009 by several lifelong residents of Northern Kentucky. Our mission is to empower disadvantaged youth and their families to fulfill their potential and to contribute to the well-being of the community by forming relationships based on mutual trust, compassion, and respect.

Our sitebased model gives youth and mentors a highly structured program, with meals, life skills instruction, recreation activities, and tutoring assistance. This unusual model gives volunteers and youth a safe place to spend time, with constant guidance and support of staff. They can focus on the relationship, not the logistics.

MOST VALUABLE KIDS OF GREATER CINCINNATI Who We Are: Most Valuable Kids (MVK) is a non-profit agency that turns tickets and experiences into life-changing incentives for at-risk kids. Every kid, regardless of his/her financial means, deserves the opportunity to experience the magic of a live sports or cultural event. MVK provides these opportunities to more than 110 non-profit partner agencies in our community who benefit underserved kids and their families. These experiences reward hard work, strengthen relationships, enhance self-esteem and encourage kids to dream big! In 2018, MVK provided 22,747 kids with tickets/experiences.

How We Serve the Community: We began quite simply, to fill unused seats in our sports and cultural venues with underserved kids. NANCY AND DAVID WOLF HOLOCAUST AND HUMANITY CENTER Who We Are: The Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center exists to ensure the lessons of the Holocaust inspire action today. The Holocaust & Humanity Center was formed by a passionate group of Holocaust survivors and their families in 2000 who wanted to ensure that their experiences would be a warning for the future. In 2019, HHC relocated to historic Union Terminal, the very site where many of these survivors arrived when they came to Cincinnati to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of Nazism.

NEW LIFE FURNITURE BANK Who We Are: New Life Furniture Bank is a faith-based non-profit located in Blue Ash, Ohio, serving the Greater Cincinnati area. The region’s only nationally-registered furniture bank, we collect gently used furniture (mattresses/ beds, dressers, tables, chairs, sofas, lamps) from people who have extra, inspect and clean it, and deliver the items directly to the homes of families in extreme need. Originally a small ministry of Milford First United Methodist Church founded in 2006, the organization gained 501(C)3 status in 2009. Nearly 10 years later, New Life Furniture Bank partners with over 30 social service agencies to help end the cycle of homelessness.

The families we serve are the "poorest of the poor": 81% reported earning less than $12,000 annually. What We Do: A “furniture bank” works a lot like a food bank – only instead of food, we collect donations of gentlyused furniture and provide to those in need. We deliver up to 18 items, furnishing empty houses of individuals and families overcoming homelessness, escaping domestic abuse, aging out of foster care, or rebuilding after disasters, and extreme poverty. This restores dignity, brings pride of ownership, adds confidence, and allows people to stabilize while working towards self-sufficiency. We get children sleeping on floors into warm, safe beds. For those who have lost everything or have nothing, we turn empty houses into homes.

This is the harsh reality for thousands of low-income families escaping poverty in Greater Cincinnati. THE POINT/ARC Who We Are: The Point/Arc began in 1972 as a support group for parents of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). We have grown to a holistic agency with a wide range of around the clock programs for more than 1,400 individuals with a variety of disabilities, from autism to down syndrome to many one of a kind diagnoses. It is our mission to fill in the service gaps and help individuals with I/DD live their dreams and become inclusive members of the community.

How We Serve the Community: For 46 years, The Point/Arc has guided individuals with I/DD to become contributing members of our community, advocated for our individuals, helped ease the minds of parents and families of individuals of I/DD by providing lifechanging programs, services and housing options, and helped change the mindset of our community when it comes to fostering inclusion and "seeing the able, not the label." In Fall 2019, we will open the Dr. Anthony and Geraldine Zembrodt Education Center, allowing us to more than double the amount of individuals we serve while also creating a space where people with and without disabilities can share their interests and experience a sense of belonging.

What We Do: We help individuals with I/ DD reach their highest potential educationally, residentially, vocationally and socially.

• Educationally: We provide social communication, pre-vocational skills and career exploration classes to individuals with I/DD. The Point/Arc is the only organization in the region currently offering the PEERS Social Skills Group for Young Adults.

• Residentially : We own 13 group homes around the region, providing a nurturing, stable and secure environment to approximately 60 individuals with I/DD, serving people based on their individual needs.

• Vocationally: We own and operate four enterprises, generating operating cash back to our programs and training and employing individuals with I/DD, including Point Perk Coffee Shop, The Point Apparel, The Point Commercial Laundry and The Point Commercial Cleaning.

• Socially: We hold weekly events for individuals with I/ DD, including game nights, movie nights, themed dances, basketball. bowling and soft ball. Throughout the year, we offer weeklong and weekend vacations, allowing our individuals to maintain friendships and meet new people.

How You Can Help: The Point/Arc operates on less than 30% government funding, which is almost unheard of for a non-profit organization. We rely on philanthropic support.

Who We Are: Ride Cincinnati is a community of riders, virtual riders and volunteers each making a commitment to defeat cancer. Ride Cincinnati is more than just a bike ride- it’s a place of hope, optimism, determination and change. All funds raised through the ride benefit lifesaving cancer research at The University of Cincinnati Barrett Cancer Center.

How We Serve the Community: Funds raised through the Ride Cincinnati event and the Ride Cincinnati Foundation have helped facilitate more than 37 research grants benefiting local families. Through these improvements, we aim to make Cincinnati the smartest city for cancer research, education and care.

How You Can Help: All rider-raised dollars benefit the Barrett Cancer Center. Cyclists of all abilities may join a Peloton (team) or register on their own via the Ride Cincinnati website. A fundraising toolkit and graphics are provided to all participants and sponsors to assist with their fundraising efforts.

Those interested in participating without physically cycling may register as a virtual rider, or support the event as a weekend volunteer. Donors can contribute to individual participants or the general fund.

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES OF GREATER CINCINNATI Who We Are: Cincinnati’s Ronald McDonald House keeps families with sick children together and near the care and resources they need. While the children are receiving treatment, we surround each family with hope and support and bring joy and a sense of normalcy to children as they heal. There are 78 rooms at our House. We are full every night of the year and always have a waiting list of families who are in need of supportive housing while in Cincinnati.

In 2020, we will open a 99-room expansion, becoming the largest Ronald McDonald House in the world.

In partnership with Stepping Stones, we provide recreation, life skills and independence-building programs for close to 1,000 individuals with all disabilities.

What We Do: Our 350+ members combine business and leadership skills with hands-on efforts to help children with disabilities and at-risk youth achieve their full potential.

Service projects include literacy, vision screening, building ADA playgrounds, mentoring, and supporting other non-profits serving families and children. Our Camp Allyn serves close to 1,000 individuals with disabilities annually through the Stepping Stones programs.

Through Rotary International, we support worldwide clean water, sanitation, health and the eradication of polio. Our major public fund raiser is the annual Believe 2 Achieve dinner that supports Autism Society Greater Cincinnati, the Down Syndrome Association and Stepping Stones/ Camp Allyn.

SANTA MARIA COMMUNITY SERVICES Who We Are: Santa Maria Community Services began in Over-the-Rhine as one of the first Catholic settlement houses in the United States over 120 years ago. It was founded by Sisters Blandina and Justina Segale of the Sisters of Charity to serve Cincinnati’s poor Italian immigrants. Now an independent nonprofit located in Price Hill, Santa Maria continues to help at-risk families who live below the poverty line. Each year, Santa Maria helps over 4,000 individuals with reaching their educational, financial, and health goals. W hy We’re Impor tant: According to the Ohio Development Services Agency’s 2018 Ohio Poverty Report, one out of three Cincinnatians live in poverty – that’s more than 85,000 individuals. We have found that lack of education, financial stability, and health insurance were among the top reasons our families struggle with poverty - so we set out to do something about it. In 2018, we assisted 561 individuals with finding a regular place to go for physical, mental, and dental health care. We helped 106 individuals with gaining employment, 44 families with obtaining affordable housing, and 34 individuals with receiving their High School Equivalency Diploma.

SISTERS OF NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR Who we are: The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur participate in a worldwide mission to spread the goodness of God beyond the boundaries of nation, state and tribe.

Following the call of Jesus as he reveals himself in the Gospels, we live simply and joyously in the footsteps of St. Julie Billiart, our founder. We place a special emphasis on education, especially of women and children who are poor.

The Ohio Province is the oldest of the Sisters’ American provinces. It was established in 1840 when we were asked to establish schools for immigrants in Cincinnati and surrounding cities.

How We Serve the Community: Since our beginnings in Cincinnati almost 180 years ago, Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur have sought to uplift people who are, or who are in danger of becoming, marginalized. In the 1840s, our work was with impoverished immigrants. Later it was with freed slaves. Still later, it was with people who were hearingimpaired. To this day, we continue to serve the community by working with those least among us, those with few skills or little education, who are battling addiction, or who are homeless – to give them what they need for life, and to show them the goodness of God.

What We Do: Today, the work of the Sisters continues, as do many of the institutions we established. The Summit Country Day School is one, Mount Notre Dame High School, another.

SPRINGER SCHOOL AND CENTER

Who we are: Springer School and Center is the only school in the region devoted entirely to the education of children with learning disabilities (LD). Through our outreach programs parents and professionals develop an understanding of learning disabilities and the most effective means to address them. The day school serves 200 students in grades 1-8 with a staff-to-student ratio of 1:6. The school features research-based curriculum specially designed for children with learning disabilities. Springer’s center builds learning potential – one student, one parent, one educator at a time through community outreach programs.

STEPPING STONES, INC. Who We Are: Stepping Stones is a place, a program and a team of people you can trust to meet the needs of Greater Cincinnati’s children, teens and adults with disabilities and their families. We are a United Way partner agency serving more than 1,100 people with disabilities in day and overnight programs that increase independence and promote individual success. Stepping Stones has a 55-year history of excellence and received the Better Business Bureau’s Torch Award in 2016, recognizing exceptional ethics in dealings with the community, participants and staff. Our mission is to increase independence, improve lives and promote inclusion for children and adults with disabilities.

Stepping Stones is one of the largest volunteer sites in Greater Cincinnati, with more than 1,500 volunteers annually. Summer camp programs alone draw more than 1,000 volunteers.

The Stepping Stones volunteer program has changed lives and strengthened the community over the past five decades. Former volunteers tell us the Stepping Stones experience led to careers in special education, physical therapy, medicine and other disabilities-related fields.

What We Do: Stepping Stones creates pathways to independence for people with disabilities. Programs include Greater Cincinnati’s oldest Summer Day Camp for children with disabilities, Respites and overnight Staycations for teens and adults, Saturday Kids/Young Adults Clubs providing extracurricular activities, Adult Day Services focusing on health, active lifestyle, social interaction, and independence and Step-Up alternative education for students with autism. New programs include Sensory Needs Transition, helping students with autism transition from high school to adulthood, and Adult Social Engagement, providing opportunities to socialize during the evening and weekend for adults with disabilities. Program sites are in Batavia, Indian Hill, Montfort Heights and Norwood.

Why We’re Important: Stepping Stones programs serve two constituencies – the children and adults who have disabilities and their families. At Stepping Stones, people with disabilities learn to identify and celebrate their abilities as they build confidence and greater independence. Our programs constantly reach through the disability to find the abilities that everyone has. Families find critical resources as well as a desperately needed break from constant care.

TAFT MUSEUM OF ART Who We Are: The Taft Museum of Art is a place where the laughter of children echoes through the halls on a Sunday afternoon as families make art together – a place where black history is honored through the murals by African-American artist Robert S. Duncanson – a place to see Rembrandt, Whistler, Hals, Corot, Daubigny… a place where all are welcome – a respite for the community in downtown Cincinnati.

The Taft is one of the finest small art museums in America. The Taft is home to an extensive art collection that includes European and American master paintings, Chinese porcelains, and European decorative arts.

Our Art for Underserved School Audiences (AUSA) reached 12 classrooms and 325 individual at-risk students in 2018, providing more than 1,200 engagements through programming connected to special exhibitions. Our Duncanson Artist-in-Residence program recognizes the achievements of contemporary African American artists working in a variety of disciplines during an annual residency. The artist works in the community through public programs, workshops, and visits schools across Greater Cincinnati. In 2018, 1,000 people were impacted by the program.

What We Do: The Taft hosts several special exhibitions each year that bring art from around the nation and beyond. We offer our visitors access to art they won’t see anywhere else in Cincinnati or the region. Our exhibitions are diverse: from costumes to photography to painting and design shows. The Taft offers an exciting variety of programs for visitors of all ages.

How You Can Help: Join others in your community by becoming a Member of the Taft Museum of Art! Annual memberships begin at $50 and include a subscription to our tri-annual award-winning magazine, Portico.

Become a Taft Museum volunteer as a “docent” or “ambassador” and meet others who have a passion for people, art, and community!

In 2018, 81,000 people were inspired through our programs. In the past year we hosted visitors from 48 states and 44 countries.
