From the Editor-in-Chief

Writing the introduction for this year’s Charity Register is providing me some much-needed reflection on just how much my life is affected by the giving of others. This morning I walked past the donor wall at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where two of my children have received amazing care for chronic illnesses. While we have been here, neighbors have walked my dogs, youth leaders have fed my kids, and colleagues have picked up the load at work. Yesterday I attended the 40th ordination anniversary of a Catholic priest who has stewarded gifts from his parish to feed, clothe, and educate thousands of children, and whose life has been dedicated to the service of others. Two days ago was the annual gala for Star House, Columbus’ shelter for homeless youth. Two weeks ago, I conducted the live auction portion of the Giving Hope Gala, benefiting the Center for Balanced Living - one of the premier eating disorder treatment facilities in the country. One month ago, my cousin received the live-saving gift of organ donation and is heading home this week to re-enter his family and work life, a possibility he thought was no longer possible just a short time ago. It is mind-boggling to think about the myriad of ways our lives would be different if not for the gifts of money, time, and talents of others.

One of my favorite quotes was made by Mahatma Gandhi: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” I have always enjoyed opportunities to dig in and give back to the community. In 1943, when Harrison M. Sayre and his fellow civic leaders stepped forward to create The Columbus Foundation, they could not have known the enduring power of their philanthropic gesture. They could not have foreseen the exponential impact their act of kindness would have. At the time, what they did know for certain was that they believed in the notion of building a better society.

While that idea is lofty even today, consider the context in which those citizens found themselves back then: war raging across both the Atlantic and the Pacific, while the lingering effects of the Great Depression were still being felt. It would have been understandable if these founders had simply hunkered down and waited for a sense of normalcy to return to their lives.

Thankfully, these citizens felt a spirit of generosity that drove them to do more in the interest of a better society.

This idea of advancing our community’s collective good has guided the words and deeds of The Columbus Foundation since its formation. As we approach our 75th anniversary this December, we are reminded of the Foundation’s founding goal to become “the expression of many givers, small and large, in the future happiness and well-being of the community of which they are a part.”

The word that strikes me most here is “future.” For, while these citizens certainly cared for the people who lived in their community at the time, they were aware that the generosity they expressed was an investment in the lives of many more to come. They wanted their generosity to extend beyond their immediate circumstances to benefit future generations of central Ohioans.

It is that spirit of optimism and foresight that grounded former Mayor Coleman’s assertion that “Columbus’ best days are always ahead.” Indeed, it is around that sense of forward-looking confidence and pride in our city that we feel our donors’ generosity coalesce most strongly.

Looking ahead, we know Columbus is poised to be one of the great cities of the 21st century. We know the opportunities that exist here in our smart and open community are greater than almost anywhere else. How we provide access to those opportunities to allow all residents to flourish will be a critical test of our time. To ensure our success, we must be willing to do more, to give more, and to be more generous of ourselves, because securing the happiness and well-being of the greater good and our future generations is still as noble an endeavor now as it was in 1943.

Formed in 1972 as the child care referral agency of Central Ohio, we’ve have grown to be much more. AMERICAN RED CROSS OF CENTRAL OHIO Who We Are: The American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to those in need. Our network of generous donors, volunteers and employees share a mission of preventing and alleviating suffering, here at home and around the world. Through a workforce that is comprised of more than 90 percent volunteers, our local chapter routinely turns compassion into action throughout Central Ohio by providing emergency disaster relief, services to the armed forces and collecting and processing blood products.

Founded in 1916, the American Red Cross of Central Ohio has been providing help and hope when it is needed most for the last 100 years, and will continue to make our communities strong and resilient in the many years to come.

How We Impact the Community: Throughout the last year, we have: • Assisted 1,850 families in response to local disasters, including house fires.

• Collected more than 154,000 units of red blood cells and 20,500 units of platelets.

• Helped an estimated 4,650 military members, veterans and their families.

• Trained nearly 52,000 community members in health and safety.

• Installed 10,000 free smoke alarms in homes.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL SERVICES (CSS) Who We Are: CSS is an anti-poverty agency whose goal is to empower people of all faiths and backgrounds with the tools they need to reach their full potential. Our current efforts are focused on two specific populations that allow us to have the most significant impact in our community: families and seniors. We have been continuously accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA) since 1982, and have proven to be a financially stable agency with diversified funding sources. CSS envisions a world in which all who are in need are able to meet their potential to live with dignity, hope, and purpose.

• In Franklin County, we served 105,587 meals to the immigrant Latino population at Our Lady of Guadalupe Center.

• In Scioto County, we served 17,048 hot meals at the St. Francis Center, which is located in the third-poorest county in Ohio.

• We helped nearly 3,500 seniors remain independent.

• 220 at-risk Columbus students received one-on-one tutoring from Foster Grandparents.

• 100% of domestic violence survivors with children who received CSS case management maintained safe housing for a year.

What We Do: • Seniors: At CSS, we devote significant time and resources to the vulnerable, oft-forgotten, senior population. Through a range of supportive services, we ensure seniors aren’t forgotten, mistreated, or taken advantage of.

• Families: We provide poverty-reducing services at our two community centers, Our Lady of Guadalupe Center (West Columbus) and St. Francis Catholic Outreach Center (Portsmouth).

• Counseling : One in five Americans struggles with diagnosed mental health issues; sometimes the most vulnerable have the most difficulty accessing vital mental health resources. CSS provides high-quality mental healthcare to low-income clients because we believe all people deserve access to mental healthcare.

What We Do: We have four main levels of care: outpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, and a 5-Day Program for anorexia. We treat the full spectrum of eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder and all variations. Our team is trained in both eating disorder recovery and general mental health, allowing for comprehensive care when eating disorders coexist with depression, anxiety, alcohol/substance abuse, etc. Our care is founded in current neurobiological research. We approach food as “medicine,” providing individualized meal plans prepare by registered dietitians and “dose” food based on macronutrients. We actively involve family/supports and integrate movement into treatment.

CENTRAL OHIO YOUTH FOR CHRIST Who We Are: Central Ohio Youth for Christ (COYFC) is a locally governed affiliate of the National Youth for Christ organization. We opened our office in 1981, and have been serving youth in Franklin and the surrounding six counties of Central Ohio ever since. Our staff and volunteers reach out to teens and their families to help them navigate the challenges they face in our everchanging world, regardless of their socio-economic background, race, religion or gender.

How We Impact the Community: Our goal is to help a young person thrive to the point that they can and do give back to others. We have a sizable group of young adults who have aged out of our program (18 and older) but who invest in the younger teens by mentoring them. The younger youth respond very well to these student leaders because they have “walked in their shoes” and made positive choices despite the pitfalls so common to our youth. This is the beginning of real community change.

What We Do: COYFC is passionate about serving young people and their families, especially those considered at risk and who struggle with poverty and other societal issues. Our wholistic ministry approach reinforces the need for education, healthy relationships and giving back to the community. Through six ministry divisions we provide mentoring, teen parents education, financial literacy, textile arts skills, computer skills, homework help, job-skills training, leadership training, professional counseling, club meetings, retreats, case management services and community service opportunities.

Why We’re Important: Following the devastation of World War II, many people were focusing on initiatives to build and maintain peace. One particular idea caught the attention of child psychologist, Dr. Doris Allen. It was a proposal for a UNESCO peace education institute for postgraduates from many disciplines. The idea for Children's International Summer Villages (today known as CISV International) was conceived by Dr. Allen in 1946. As a specialist in growth and development, Dr. Allen, could not agree that the focus for peace education should be in the field of adult learning. She firmly believed that the ultimate source for peace, long range, lay with the children.

From this conviction came her vision of bringing together children from all over the globe to learn to respect different and common values. In 1951, she realized her dream when delegates from eight countries gathered in Cincinnati, USA for

CITY YEAR COLUMBUS Who We Are: City Year Columbus is an educationfocused nonprofit organization that partners with Columbus City Schools to help keep students in school and on track to graduate.

Of the students who completed City Year programming, 77% showed improvement on end-ofyear assessments in math and 77% showed improvement on end-of-year assessments in English. City Year Columbus had over 110 students regularly attending after school programming and hosted 60 school events and initiatives.

What We Do: City Year Columbus’ Whole School Whole Child program is an innovative approach to supporting at risk students in Columbus City Schools.

City Year Columbus places teams of AmeriCorps members in seven Columbus City Schools where they serve all day, every day as tutors, mentors, and role models. City Year AmeriCorps members lead individualized interventions in attendance, behavior, math, and English and provide holistic support to help students stay in school and on track to graduate. Additionally, City Year AmeriCorps members lead after school programming, provide whole school support, plan community and family engagement events, participate in school committees, and more.

Gigi’s Shelter for Dogs, the first facility of its kind in the country, will help adopt out 1,500 dogs and impact thousands more annually.

Additionally, we have recently acquired the Eat Purr Love cat café to continue to connect adoptable cats with community members, resulting in an average of 170 adoptions annually.

COMMUNITY SHELTER BOARD Who We Are: Community Shelter Board was created in 1986, founded on the vision that no one should be homeless in our community, for even one night. Our mission is to lead a coordinated, community effort to make sure everyone has a place to call home. CSB is the collective impact organization driving the best outcomes for people facing homelessness in Columbus and Franklin County. CSB is considered a national model for organizing a community’s response to homelessness.

Who We Are: In September 1974, through a considerable volunteer effort coupled with the donation of services and funds from civic clubs, foundations, corporations, and individuals, Creative Living I opened 18 apartments on Perry St. In 1986, Creative Living II opened with 16 apartments.

Each apartment is designed to be fully accessible to those who are in wheelchairs. With its specially designed shower stalls, countertops, door pulls, and intercom system, Creative Living continues to be recognized as an innovative, cost effective alternative to skilled nursing facilities, where costs for similar care would increase ten-fold. The major goal of our residents is to further education by attending a community college, 4-year university, technical school or vocational training. Our residents are motivated individuals who are directing their own lives and personal care.

How We Impact the Community: Creative Living benefits the entire community because we provide awareness and education for disability issues. Creative Living has served as an important model. Although the mission is to provide housing and services for people with disabilities, far more has been accomplished. Former residents have gone into the community and are now tax paying citizens leading independent lives. There is awareness promoted by the organization and the residents to visitors who have come to discuss and observe what we do and how we do it.

The visitors range from a young person who has just had a spinal cord injury and thinks life is over to architects, social workers, college students and contractors. Creative Living has and will continue to play an important role.

What We Do: Mission: Creative Living is a nonprofit organization encouraging independent living for adults with severe physical disabilities by providing wheelchair accessible housing and assistance and by creating a supportive environment for people to learn, work, live and contribute to the community. Why We’re Important: What would happen if Creative Living did not exist? Envision our 34 current residents who most certainly would be living in skilled nursing facilities because of lack of suitable housing (affordable and accessible), lack of onsite assistance, aging parents unable to care for them, physical problems which family members couldn’t handle, no family available, isolation and inability to care for themselves.

Skilled nursing facilities have made great strides but still do not provide for the needs of young individuals with severe disabilities. Placement in a skilled facility is difficult for a quadriplegic. Skilled care for several hours a day is a burden on staff. The cost is an average of 75,000 a year. Statistical research

DIRECTIONS FOR YOUTH & FAMILIES Who we are: Directions for Youth & Families (DFYF) provides mental and behavioral health services to youth and families in central Ohio. DFYF is a resiliencyoriented, trauma-informed agency whose mission is to build and inspire hope, healing, and resilience for youth, families, and communities through counseling and education. DFYF offers a continuum of services that spans psychiatric and psychological services, mental and behavioral health treatment, and after-school and prevention programming. They are 1 of only 26 members of the National Crittenton family of agencies. DFYF serves over 6,000 youth and their families each year, most of whom are economically challenged.

How we impact the community: DFYF offers programs that provide community-based treatment and prevention services that emphasize commitment to the family, school, and work. Referrals for services come from schools, juvenile court, other social services agencies, parents, churches, and concerned community residents. Services are provided through innovative programs that are resiliency-oriented, trauma-informed and focus on the reduction of selfdefeating behaviors and assisting youth, adults and families in leading positive and productive lives. DFYF provides new opportunities in disadvantaged neighborhoods, helps clients learn to heal and build resilience, and contributes to a healthy community – one individual, one family at a time.

What we do: Programs include clinical counseling services, parenting and kindergarten readiness programs, and afterschool/summer programs.

DFYF has over 70 licensed social workers and counselors offering in-home and school counseling services. Individuals and families are helped to address and overcome a range of issues including school challenges, sexual abuse, delinquency, domestic violence, depression and anxiety, physical abuse/neglect, family conflict, grief, and substance abuse.

DFYF operates two youth centers providing an environment that is safe, positive, and educational, both located in high-risk neighborhoods and offering new opportunities and healthy alternatives to delinquent activities prevalent in those neighborhoods.

FRANKLIN PARK CONSERVATORY Who We Are: Inspired by horticulture, Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens elevates quality of life and connects the community through educational, cultural and social experiences. The Conservatory features indoor gardens and botanical biomes filled with exotic plant life, seasonal horticulture displays, and art exhibitions featuring local, national, and international artists. Ten acres of outdoor gardens include the new Scotts MiracleGro Foundation Children’s Garden, a multi-sensory space filled with unique, nature-based interactive experiences for families and children. FREEDOM A LA CART Who We Are: Freedom a la Cart is a nonprofit organization and catering social enterprise that empowers survivors of human trafficking to build a new life of freedom and selfsufficiency. People are not property. We believe that women who have lived in slavery should be empowered to gain freedom through personal and economic independence.

Through offering comprehensive supportive services, practical life skills, paid workforce training and one-on-one case management, Freedom is a place where survivors can heal, learn and grow as they prepare to live independently in the community.

How We Impact the Community: In 2016 and 2017, Freedom a la Cart provided supportive services to 116 and 210 survivors, respectively -- a year-over-year increase of over 80%. Of those served, 55 received workforce development training and 20 transitioned to sustainable employment and are living independently in the community. As we deliver delicious, made-from-scratch cuisine and prepare and employ survivors, we also educate the community with a message of hope and healing for survivors of human trafficking.

What We Do: Ten years ago, Doma International began a collaborative partnership with Franklin County Municipal Court’s CATCH Court specialized docket. Whereas CATCH provides an intensive probationary program to help victims of sex trafficking, Doma established a comprehensive community-based support program to foster healing and restoration. Furthermore, to help overcome barriers to employment, Doma launched Freedom a la Cart - a social enterprise and job training opportunity to offer survivors economic self-sufficiency through paid workforce development. In early 2014, Doma International and Freedom a la Cart merged names, combining the restorative and supportive services with the social enterprise’s job preparedness through one harmonious brand — Freedom a la Cart.

Why We’re Important: Human trafficking, the fastest growing criminal industry in the world, has deep roots in Central Ohio. As many as 1,200 solicitation arrests are made each year in Franklin County. An estimated 92% are identified as victims of human trafficking. These women were trafficked at the average age of 13, and have suffered extensive trauma, sexual abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, homelessness, and poverty. We know that economic independence starts with a sustainable job, but human trafficking survivors face severe barriers to employment. By addressing the link between supportive services, community, and employment, Freedom a la Cart is helping survivors live independently.

HARMONY PROJECT Who We Are: Harmony Project connects people across cultural, social, and geographical divides through the arts, education and volunteer community service. Who We Are: Heinzerling Community provides 24 hour care and residential services for individuals with severe or profound developmental disabilities. For nearly 60 years Heinzerling Community has created a legacy of caring by providing supports for this special population in central Ohio. Today, approximately 200 children and adults reside at Heinzerling Community where they receive exceptional quality of care.

THE HOMELESS FAMILIES FOUNDATION Who We Are: The Homeless Families Foundation’s (HFF) mission is to educate and nurture children while empowering families to achieve stable housing and self-sufficiency.

HFF was founded in 1986 with the belief that it was unacceptable for any child to be homeless. That belief continues to fuel our conviction. We believe all children in our community should have a home - and the key to ending homelessness is a stable family. At the very core, HFF serves children and their families living in poverty, helping them to secure housing and resources to stabilize their lives.

How We Impact the Community: Every year, hundreds of thousands of American families become homeless, including more than 2 million children. Last year, 1,181 families, including 2,652 children, were homeless in Columbus/ Franklin County. HFF consistently works to educate children and empower families on the road to self-sufficiency, annually influencing the lives of over 800 children and nearly 300 families.

HOMEPORT Who We Are: Homeport is the largest, locally-focused nonprofit developer of affordable housing in Central Ohio. Having served the area since 1987, Homeport owns 2,369 affordable rental apartments and homes in 35 communities. Its 6,200 residents, families and seniors, can access a broad range of services ranging from after school programming to emergency assistance for rent and utilities. Homeport partnerships also link its residents to food, furniture and employment assistance as well as medical and mental health services. Homeport is a leading provider of homebuyer education and budget and credit counseling for Central Ohio.

• Of the top 10 occupations with the most annual openings, nine do not pay workers enough to afford housing. The one exception is Registered Nurses.

IN CHRISTY’S SHOES Who We Are: We are a non-profit organization that is committed to ensuring women have an opportunity to achieve their full potential by connecting them through compassion, resources and community. In Christy’s Shoes began in 2008 with a remembrance luncheon for Christy Levy Peters, an identical twin who lost her battle with terminal brain cancer at the age of 34.

Her twin sister and two lifelong friends helped to launch the organization, In Christy’s Shoes, to continue fostering Christy’s innate ability for helping women and to ensure her legacy would continue to positively impact women.

KIPP COLUMBUS Who We Are: KIPP, the “Knowledge Is Power Program”, is a national network of free, open enrollment, college preparatory public schools dedicated to preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and life. Nationally, there are 224 KIPP schools serving nearly 100,000 students and the more than 12,000 KIPP alumni are graduating from college at 3X the rate of their peers.

Founded in 2008 with 50 students in the 5th grade, KIPP Columbus currently serves 1,700 students from 6 weeks old to 11th grade, with the goal of serving 2,000 students (6 weeks - 12th grade) by 2020.

The KIPP Columbus mission is to create and sustain the highest quality school system for the children most underserved in Columbus. KIPP has maintained excellence in its growth, and will improve upon that standard - proving what is possible in public education.

Because of this robust learning, our KIPPsters are able to navigate their way throughout their K-12 education and nearly 100% of KIPP Columbus Alumni are persisting in high school and college.

LIFECARE ALLIANCE Who We Are: LifeCare Alliance is a not-for-profit organization that provides a comprehensive array of health and nutrition services to older adults, medically challenged, and individuals living with a disability in central Ohio. Formed in 1898, as the Instructive District Nursing Association (IDNA), LifeCare Alliance is central Ohio’s first in-home health care agency, Ohio’s first agency to provide visiting nurses, and the nation’s second agency to deliver Meals-on-Wheels. LOCAL MATTERS Who We Are: Local Matters was founded ten years ago, because we saw food insecurity, obesity and diet-related disease all across our community and in our own lives.

We are on a quest to bring every eligible child’s wish to life, because a wish is an integral part of a child’s treatment journey. MARBURN ACADEMY Who We Are: Marburn Academy is an independent day school serving the educational needs of bright students with learning differences such as dyslexia, ADHD and executive function difficulties. Marburn educates more than 350 students year-round in its day school and summer programs in grades 1-12. It is the only school in Central Ohio with programs designed to address the full range of unique learning and personal development needs of students with learning differences. MID-OHIO FOODBANK Who We Are: Mid-Ohio Foodbank works in community to connect our hungry neighbors with nutritious food, stabilizing families today while helping them access resources for tomorrow so they can thrive for a lifetime.

The Foodbank is the largest hunger-relief organization in central and eastern Ohio. STAR HOUSE Who We Are: Star House is a 24/7 drop-in center for youth aged 14-24 who are experiencing homelessness.

We provide youth experiencing homelessness with a safe respite from the streets and connect them with a chance to thrive. We are the only drop-in center for youth experiencing homelessness in Central Ohio, and the only one in the country that continuously hosts best-practices research. We are open 365 days per year.

How We Impact the Community: In 2017, Star House served 996 unduplicated youth. According to our surveys of youth who have accessed services for a minimum of 3 months, 73.9% have been linked to resources, 73.9% have been housed, 70.8% have received medical care, 67.7% have received case management, 36.9% have engaged in therapy, 56.9% have obtained identification documents, and 98.5% have received resources to assist with transportation. Their average rating of overall life satisfaction of 4.98 before coming to Star House (On a 10 point scale) improves to a 7.74 after accessing services.

What We Do: Star House provides youth experiencing homelessness with food, clothing, hygiene items, laundry facilities, showers, and a safe place to be. Staff clinical therapists provide therapy and case management, and 30 partnering agencies provide on-site and communitybased access to housing , transportation, health care, employment, education, legal aid, government benefits, ID cards and other stabilizing resources. We use a multi-step, evidence-based model to address the unique needs of one of our community’s most vulnerable populations. This proven model is built upon the principles of accepting youth for who they are, providing as few barriers to entry as possible, and maintaining unconditional positive regard.

Why We’re Important: Youth experiencing homelessness have too often been let down by the adults in their lives, and have little orientation for a loving, trusting relationship. As a result, many would rather fend for themselves on the streets than reach out for help. Research tells us that connection with a supportive community is a leading predictor of youth overcoming distrust and exiting homelessness. To provide successful interventions that target childhood trauma, substance use, and mental health problems, we first develop trust and linkages between homeless youth and service providers. Our patient, relational philosophy allows us serve as a reliable launchpad to stability.

DAVE THOMAS FOUNDATION FOR ADOPTION Who We Are: The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is a national, nonprofit public charity dedicated to dramatically increasing the number of adoptions from foster care. Created by Wendy’s® founder Dave Thomas who was adopted, the Foundation implements evidence-based, results-driven national service programs, foster care adoption awareness campaigns and innovative grantmaking.

The Foundation’s successful pilot in Ohio led to the launch of a 12-year business plan in 2017 to expand the program in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. What We Do: Through its Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program, the Foundation provides grants to adoption agencies to hire and train adoption recruiters in its ChildFocused Recruitment Model, which is up to three times more effective at finding permanent, loving homes for children who are most at risk of not being adopted, including older youth, sibling groups and children with special needs.

Additionally, the Foundation develops and distributes free resources, such as Finding Forever Families: A Stepby-Step Guide to Adoption and the Adoption-Friendly Workplace Toolkit, and raises awareness about the importance of adoption from foster care through social media, public service announcements and events.

How You Can Help: Children enter foster care through no fault of their own because they have been abused, neglected or abandoned. Finding forever families for children in foster care in Ohio and across the nation changes not only their lives for the better, but also builds stronger families and communities for generations to come.

Why We’re Important: In the United States alone, more than 20,000 children age out of the foster care system without a family every year. One-quarter of the children in the program had a prior failed or disrupted adoption, and for 86% of those children, minimal or no recruitment efforts had been made on their behalf.
