From the Editor-in-Chief Recently I served as the auctioneer for the first-ever gala conducted by The Center for Balanced Living, a nationallyrenowned treatment center for eating disorders. During the auction, guests were invited to take the mic and make a statement about someone in whose honor they were giving. Donation options ranged from $250 - $10,000, and the room was filled with people from every walk of life - many of whom had been touched personally, but some who were simply attending as the guest of a friend. I have helped to conduct many of these “Fund the Mission” moments, and usually they are an add-on to a live auction that includes exotic trips, fine wine or golf outings. The organizers of the event, however, had opted to drop the live auction portion of the evening, instead going “all in” to the fund a mission concept. It was wildly successful for a first effort, raising over $65,000 in about 30 minutes.

While many of the stories I heard that night were touching, one young woman made an incredible impression on me (and I’d guess most people in the room). Although we had already asked for gifts of $10,000, then $5,000, then $2,500, she raised her hand and asked for the mic. With the tiniest shake in her voice, she announced a gift of $10,000 - and, when the person holding the mic asked her to explain why, she simply said, “Because we can.” This particular donor went on to describe her own battle with an eating disorder, and how life-changing her time at The Center had been. She ended her testimonial with a statement as powerful as the one with which she led: “I want to give someone else the benefit of the treatment I received, and I can. So, I will.”

Because we can.

I can, so I will.

Simple words full of wisdom and compassion and generosity. Philanthropy can be complicated when thinking of legal and tax strategies, but at it’s heart (pun intended), it really is very simple.

It is with tremendous enthusiasm that we share the second annual Sophisticated Giving Charity Register. Of note this year are two significant partnerships: • the Central Ohio Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals who will be distributing SG 2018 at their National Philanthropy Day luncheon on November 21 (one of the largest National Philanthropy Day events in the country) • The Columbus Foundation, our presenting sponsor, who is wrapping up 2017 with a record-breaking day of philanthropy known as The Big Give, raising over $18M dollars for area nonprofits Though Sophisticated Giving is a relatively young publication, these partnerships have allowed us to grow and develop some truly exciting plans for 2018. With the help of the experts at The Columbus Foundation, we are thrilled to be in the planning stages of a Giving Circle, a group we invite you to explore by emailing me at ajeffers@slmag.net.

From The Columbus Foundation In 1943, Columbus businessman Harrison M. Sayre and a group of fellow civic leaders looked past the darkness that had enveloped the world in the midst of World War II and sought to create a brighter future for central Ohio. That initial act of kindness established The Columbus Foundation—a foundation for the community that provides generous individuals, families, and businesses with opportunities to make a difference by supporting the nonprofit organizations that help move our community forward.

Thanks to the generosity of these initial visionaries, and all of those who have been part of the Foundation for nearly 75 years, this legacy of kindness lives on today. Since 1944, an incredible $2.06 billion in grants by the Foundation and donors has been awarded to benefit thousands of nonprofit organizations.

2017 has been a trying year on many fronts, as communities throughout our country have dealt with unforeseen crises. Central Ohio has not been immune, as we continue to battle the opioid epidemic sweeping across Ohio, leaving individuals and families devastated by the effects of addiction.

While these events impact many, in most cases the nonprofits who serve these communities are on the front lines—assisting individuals and families, and leaned upon as trusted partners when all seems lost. These nonprofits, including those that serve residents in central Ohio, are an integral part of not just the immediate need at hand—but a solid plan for the future.

Why is this important? Collaboration is critical when it comes to addressing our city’s changing needs. We are smart and open; a growing, innovative, vibrant hub—but not without our challenges. We know we are better together. Working to tackle community-wide issues, from homelessness and neighborhood safety to infant mortality and hunger, creates a cohesiveness that allows our civic, business, and nonprofit partners to work efficiently, effectively, and focus on their unique areas of knowledge and expertise. Kindness is a key ingredient in this success, and deeply integrated in the services and programs nonprofits offer.

In a city as robust and growing as ours, we all have opportunities to support the causes and passions that mean the most to us. For some that means volunteering time and expertise. For others, it means financially supporting an initiative or nonprofit. However you give, now, more than ever is a time to do more.

This year, we have seen firsthand the importance of communities coming together in times of great need. We have seen kindness personified as those who can help reach out to those in need—and how that kindness uplifts all of us.

The Big Give, held on October 10-11, was a perfect manifestation of this kindness and collaboration in our city. Over 26 hours, the generosity of those who live here, across the country, and around the world was inspiring. We witnessed thousands coming together to invest more than $18 million in 906 nonprofit organizations working to strengthen our community. It was an historic event for good, indeed.

Gifts of Kindness When the Gifts of Kindness Fund was established by a generous donor at The Columbus Foundation in the fall of 2014, the goal was twofold—to provide financial assistance to individuals with emergency needs and encourage and promote kindness throughout our community.

Three years later, the Gifts of Kindness Fund has made good on that goal—and then some—awarding 592 grants totaling more than $1 million as of August 31 to individuals and families who are experiencing these unexpected setbacks. Today, the Foundation works with 22 partner nonprofit organizations to identify individuals who will benefit from these one-time grants that often cover critical everyday needs such as rent, utility bills, and medical costs. Individuals must already be involved in a service or program of a partner nonprofit to apply for and receive a grant from the Gifts of Kindness Fund.

“Surpassing $1 million in Gifts of Kindness grants in just three years is awe-inspiring especially when you consider that the average grant is less than $1,800,” said Kelley Griesmer, Senior Vice President and Manager, Walter Family Philanthropy for The Columbus Foundation.

“When our community sees someone in need, we offer a helping hand in the hope that the person receiving our kindness will not only benefit from our generosity but also pass it on to others in the future.”

Since that generous initial gift, numerous donors have added to the fund with donations that range from $20 to several thousand dollars. During The Big Give, The Columbus Foundation’s 26-hour online giving rally held in October, 49 donations were received for the Gifts of Kindness Fund, leveraging more than $34,000!

No matter the size of the donation, the Foundation makes sure funds are used to make grants to those in need, helping individuals and families continue on a path to self-sustainability.

“These grants are a testament to the strength and compassion of a community that cares deeply about all of its residents. Every donation to the Gifts of Kindness Fund is an investment in what makes Columbus a unique and wonderful place to live,” Kelley said.

Anyone can make a gift to the Gifts of Kindness Fund using a credit card, Donor Advised Fund, or Supporting Foundation through The Giving Store at columbusfoundation.org.

GIFTS OF KINDNESS GRANT EXAMPLES: A 54-year-old woman raising her two grandsons was unable to work while undergoing treatment for cancer. Assistance from the Gifts of Kindness Fund enabled them to maintain their housing until she was able to return to work.

A pregnant single mom on unpaid maternity leave with a six-year-old son was given rental assistance through Gifts of Kindness because she had to use her savings to contest a utility account that was fraudulently opened in her name.

A man with cancer lost his employment during treatment. After he and his significant other depleted their savings, they were finding it difficult to make ends meet. He went through loan modification for his mortgage to decrease his monthly expenses and applied for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). A Gifts of Kindness grant helped fill his income gap until he started receiving SSDI. Corporate giving rose 3.5% to $18.5B—still the smallest source of contributions. Cause sponsorships added another $2B. While corporate pre-tax profits rose 2.7%, most companies still donate less than 1% of pre-tax profits in cash.

For every 10 new donors, 9.9 were lost. For every new $10 gift, $9.50 was lost-totaling $4.6 billion lost among analyzed organizations.

Giving by individuals saw strong 2-year growth (8%), outpacing growth of overall giving (6.8 %), despite a drop in mega gifts.

Individuals account for 88% of all giving when bequests and family foundations are included.

Change for Charity Uses Change for Good Written by Susan Emerson Nutter Now one of the country’s premiere shopping meccas, Easton Town Center was the innovative brainchild of some of the most respected names in retail and development twenty years ago. Envisioned to be an upscale, aspirational shopping destination with a diverse mix of best-in-class retailers unrivaled anywhere in the country, the open-air, pedestrianfriendly charmingly nostalgic result has been widely lauded as a remarkable success by any measure: over 2.2 - million square feet of mixed use space with less than 1% vacancy, Easton has become somewhat of a community of its own, with offices, residences and medical facilities surrounding an unmatched shopping experience featuring retailers as diverse as Louis Vuitton and local phenom Homage.

Not content to simply “build and fill”, Easton leadership (more specifically, the developer - Steiner & Associates) has doggedly pursued opportunities to entrench the project into the fabric of the community, utilizing its influence and resources to benefit the greater Columbus area. Established in 1999, the Easton Community Foundation has made an impressive financial impact of more than $6.2 million on several hundred organizations that strengthen the central Ohio community through services and programming in the areas of families, youth, education, health, jobs, the arts and social services.

Among the many projects undertaken by the Easton Community Foundation each year, Change for Charity may be the most ingenious. A wonderful public-private partnership of sorts, the program leverages a nominal expense most shoppers don’t even notice into significant dollars for area nonprofits. While most parking at Easton is free, paid street parking via meters is available for shoppers on the run. Considering that Easton draws about 25 million visitors a year, the meter-money and paid parking tickets can add up. The Easton Community Foundation’s Change for Charity Program puts these monies to good use, choosing a new community organization every two months to receive a portion of the meter proceeds and ticket revenues generated.

To date, more than 70 youth and family focused organizations have benefited from nearly $1.3 million raised via the Change for Charity Program. In addition to this funding, the organizations selected to partner

with The Easton Community Foundation also receive the benefit of extensive exposure via digital marketing, on-property signage, and LED screen exposure at Easton.

Jennifer Peterson, Chief Executive of Easton for Steiner & Associates, explains, “The goal is to not only raise dollars for our partnering nonprofits, but to really give them an opportunity to connect with our guests.”

The featured organizations also have the opportunity to use the highly-visible Easton Community Booth and the Community Room; a space that can seat up to 40 individuals. Peterson continues, “Our Community Booth is in the center of the Station Building which is a highly-trafficked area and groups can utilize it to share information, discuss their mission, sell products, if applicable (such as Girl Scout cookies). It is amazing how much awareness you can build when the property welcomes hundreds of thousands of people a week!”

The organizations benefiting from Easton’s Change for Charity Program for 2017 are Girl Scouts of Ohio's Heartland, After-School All-Stars Ohio, Jewish Family Services – Youth Employment Initiative (18-24 years of age), Canine Companions for Independence, American Red Cross, Central Ohio Chapter – Fire Safety/Reduce Home Fires Campaign in At-Risk Areas, and STAR House for Homeless Youth.

“Nonprofits apply through our website. The deadline is Oct 1st of every year,” Peterson offers, adding, “We have a committee who convenes and reads through all of the applications (nearly 100) and assess needs versus our mission. Some groups have applied five or six times before they've been selected, so we encourage organizations to continue to apply.”

It is often said that “charity begins at home” but in the case of the Easton Community Foundation, it also starts at the curb.

THE 2ND & 7 FOUNDATION Who We Are: The 2nd & 7 Foundation is committed to ending illiteracy. Our mission is to promote reading by providing free books and positive role models to kids in need while encouraging young athletes of the community to pay it forward. We were founded in central Ohio in 1999 by former Ohio State football players Luke Fickell, Ryan Miller and Mike Vrabel. The three former teammates and friends wanted to continue to pay it forward by using their platform to inspire children to read. In 1999, they raised enough money to provide free books to all of the 2nd graders in 7 schools. This inspired the organization's name 2nd & 7. Since that time, we have grown to serve children in over 120 communities in 21 states across the country.

One student-athlete said, "I will never forget reading to my first 2nd grade class. Their eyes followed in awe and their smiles were as big as they could be, only because I was a student-athlete ... I have had second graders tell me that want to be just like me ... I have seen that the best part of some second graders day is when we take time to go read a book I have learned that many kids ... have never owned a book and have watched many students cry in happiness after we have given them their own book to take home ... I believe this foundation promotes more than just literacy, it promotes dreaming, love, and healthy lifestyle choices. I have learned that I may have been a role model for these second graders but I have learned more about myself than I can ever teach one of the kids."

What We Do: The 2nd & 7 Foundation pairs high school and college student-athletes with 2nd graders to read with them, talk about the importance of their education and provide each of them with a new book to take home. The 2nd & 7 Foundation writes its own series of books for 2nd graders that focuses on life lessons such as teamwork, sportsmanship, kindness, healthy choices, and dreaming big. The foundation produces a new book annually, and there are currently 10 books in the series. These are the books that are distributed to kids in every school we visit.

By the end of 2018, we will have distributed well over 200,000 free books to kids in need.

We are doing our part in the fight against illiteracy by showing kids that reading is not only fun, it is the key to their futures. We join the schools, librarians, teachers and principals in the fight against illiteracy by making sure every child has a book of their own at home. The student-athlete role models who volunteer with our program learn that they have a platform to inspire children at a young age and a unique opportunity to give back to their community.

How We Impact the Community: One in four children in America grow up without learning how to read. ACTION FOR CHILDREN Who We Are: Action for Children’s (AFC) mission is to transform the lives of children in Central Ohio by supporting, empowering and advocating for the adults who make the biggest impact on children's lives - their parents, caregivers, and teachers. AFC recently celebrated our 45th continuous year of providing essential programs and services with the ultimate goal of helping the 50,000+ children we serve each year be prepared for success in school and in life.

AMERICAN RED CROSS OF CENTRAL OHIO Who We Are: The American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to those in need. Our network of generous donors, volunteers and employees share a mission of preventing and relieving suffering, here at home and around the world. Throug h a workforce that is comprised of 94% volunteers, our local chapter routinely turns compassion into action throughout Central Ohio by providing emergency disaster relief, services to the armed forces and collecting and processing blood products.

What We Do: We roll up our sleeves and donate time, money and blood. We teach life-saving skills, such as CPR or fire safety so our communities can be better prepared when the need arises. Why We’re Important: The American Red Cross is always there, down the street, across the country, and around the world, to provide help and hope. Every eight minutes, we respond to an emergency. THE BRIAN MUHA MEMORIAL FOUNDATION/ THE RUN THE RACE CENTER Who we are: The family and friends of Brian Muha started the Foundation and The Center. Brian grew up in central Ohio and was a college student when two boys high on crack and other drugs broke into Brian’s college apartment and even though they didn’t know Brian, they assaulted and killed him...Brian was 18 years old and wanted to be a pediatrician. His kind and charitable spirit lives on in his family and friends who are now committed to helping others in his name. Now, both the Foundation and The Center are supported by good-hearted people all over Ohio and beyond because they recognize the work and results of the work.

Our mission is to provide all we can that helps people in their spiritual, educational, physical and emotional lives, especially children and their families who live in the inner-city. The Run The Race Club is founded on the principle that loving, personal, committed attention is still the best “program” around when it comes to helping others. Our mission is to love the children and their families, to establish friendships and relationships with them and to offer them resources and activities to promote their personal and educational development.

THE CENTER FOR FAMILY SAFETY AND HEALING Who We Are: At The Center for Family Safet y and Healing ( TCFSH) we focus on all aspects of family violence, beyond prevention and intervention.

Our multidisciplinary team of experts provides the personalized care tailored to the needs of each person, while working to eliminate the damage these heinous acts cost society as a whole, all in an effort to becoming one step closer to ending family violence in our community.

We do this through treating victims, advocating for change and conducting research. The goal of everything we do is to break the cycle and restore hope.

CENTRAL OHIO YOUTH FOR CHRIST Who we are: Central Ohio Youth for Christ (COYFC) is a locally governed affiliate of the National Youth for Christ organization. We opened our office in 1981, and have been serving youth in Franklin and the surrounding six counties of Central Ohio ever since. Our staff and volunteers reach out to teens and their families to help them navigate the challenges they face in our everchanging world, regardless of their socio-economic background, race, religion or gender.

How We Impact the Community: Our goal is to help a young person thrive to the point that they can and do give back to others. We have a sizable group of young adults who have aged out of our program (18 and older) but who invest in the younger teens by mentoring them. The younger youth respond very well to these student leaders because they have “walked in their shoes” and made positive choices despite the pitfalls so common to our youth. This is the beginning of real community change.

What We Do: COYFC is passionate about serving young people and their families, especially those considered at risk and who struggle with poverty and other societal issues. Our wholistic ministry approach reinforces the need for education, healthy relationships and giving back to the community. Through six ministry divisions we provide mentoring, teen parents education, financial literacy, textile arts skills, computer skills, homework help, job-skills training, leadership training, professional counseling, club meetings, retreats, case management services and community service opportunities.

THE CHILDHOOD LEAGUE CENTER

Who We Are: A leader in early childhood education interventions, The Childhood League Center serves children under 6 who have developmental delays or who are at risk. Founded in 1945 by a group of visionary women, the original mission was to “help children in need” and, 73 years later, we still hold true to that mission.

How We Impact the Community: 45% of our preschoolers with special needs catch up to their peers by kindergarten, meaning they no longer qualify for services. Additionally, 100% of our children show significant improvements, meaning they meet their developmental milestones more quickly and are more confident entering the world.

The impact for each child and family is tremendous.

Yet, it doesn’t stop there. School districts are directly impacted and in turn, future workforce development also impacted. Nobel Economist James Heckman states that every $1 invested now in early childhood education saves $7-$17 in future spending.

What We Do: • Early Intervention (0-3): this program focuses on how children best learn – in the places where they spend time with the people they love. Center experts partner with families, visiting them at home and coaching them to help achieve the goals they set for their child.

• Preschool (3-6): this program happens in our classrooms in fully-inclusive classes where children with and without special needs learn together.

Classrooms are play-based and focus on children’s social-emotional development as well as other developmental milestones.

• PLAY Project: is a unique, evidence-based autism intervention for young children. Based on relationships, families are coached to deliver the interventions themselves, maximizing impact and effectiveness.

CHILDREN’S HUNGER ALLIANCE Who We Are: Founded in 1970 in Columbus, Ohio, Children’s Hunger Alliance is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to ending childhood hunger.

Headquartered in Columbus with regional offices in Cleveland, Cincinnati and Toledo, Children’s Hunger Alliance has over 50 dedicated staff members who are committed to improving the wellbeing of Ohio’s 1 in 5 children living in food-insecure households. CISV Columbus is one of 21 chapters in the U.S. Since 2004, 315 people have participated in international CISV programs from the Columbus area. CISV Columbus has also hosted five international programs, affording opportunities for local families and businesses to support global friendship.

What We Do: CISV provides a range of unique, educational group activities, which develop cross-cultural understanding in children, youth and adults from around the world. By encouraging respect for cultural differences and the development of selfawareness, CISV empowers each participant to incorporate these values into their lives as they become global citizens and strive for a more peaceful world. Although we are a non-profit, charitable organization, there are costs in hosting international and local programs, camps and events. This is where your financial support is valued and is put to good use. CISV Columbus hosted the Village program, an international camp for 48 eleven-year old children from 12 countries in 2010, 2013, 2016. The next Village in Columbus is scheduled for 2020. The Step Up program, an international camp for 36 fourteen-year-old teens from nine countries, was hosted locally in 2012 and 2015.

The next Step Up in Columbus is scheduled for 2019. These participants live for 3 – 4 weeks in a suburban school with adult leaders and staff. Our chapter is responsible for housing, food, activities, supplies, and excursions.

Why We’re Important: Following the devastation of World War II, many people were focusing on initiatives to build and maintain peace. One particular idea caught the attention of child psychologist, Dr. Doris Allen. It was a proposal for a UNESCO peace education institute for postgraduates from many disciplines. The idea for Children's International Summer Villages (today known as CISV International) was conceived by Dr. Allen in 1946. As a specialist in growth and development, Dr. Allen, could not agree that the focus for peace education should be in the field of adult learning. She firmly believed that the ultimate source for peace, long range, lay with the children.

From this conviction came her vision of bringing together children from all over the globe to learn to respect different and common values. In 1951, she realized her dream when delegates from eight countries gathered in Cincinnati, USA for

CITY YEAR COLUMBUS Who We Are: City Year Columbus is an educationfocused nonprofit organization that partners with Columbus City Schools to help keep students in school and on track to graduate.

For those who do find employment, U.S. Census statistics show that the average dropout earns a $20,000 income, a full $11,000 less than the typical graduate and $37,000 less than someone with a bachelor’s degree. City Year’s focus on ensuring students graduate ready for college and career provides a pathway out of poverty for students right here in Columbus.

What We Do: City Year recruits, trains, and deploys young AmeriCorps members, ages 18-25, to serve our community for a full academic year. Serving in seven Columbus City Schools nine hours a day, five days a week, City Year AmeriCorps members provide academic tutoring, attendance coaching, behavior support and mentoring , extended day programming , and whole school positive climate initiatives through our Whole School Whole Child program. We focus our attention on students most in need of extra help, keeping struggling students in school and on track toward graduation, and provide the additional people power required to effectively meet students’ individual needs.

Our Whole School Whole Child program has proven successful in addressing the needs of students at risk, keeping them on track to graduate. Activities include: 1) 1-1 tutoring in English Language Arts or math with students identified as performing below grade level; 2) Whole-class academic support as requested by teachers to help differentiate instruction; and 3) Whole-school support such as community programming and family activities

Creative Living Who We Are: In September 1974, through a considerable volunteer effort coupled with the donation of services and funds from civic clubs, foundations, corporations, and individuals, Creative Living I opened 18 apartments on Perry St. In 1986, Creative Living II opened with 16 apartments. Each apartment is designed to be fully accessible to those who are in wheelchairs. With its specially designed apartments, Creative Living continues to be recognized as an innovative, cost-effective alternative to skilled nursing facilities, where costs for similar care would increase ten-fold. Our residents are motivated individuals who are directing their own lives and personal care.

FRANKLIN PARK CONSERVATORY Who We Are: Inspired by horticulture, Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens elevates quality of life and connects the community through educational, cultural and social experiences. The Conservatory features indoor gardens and botanical biomes filled with exotic plant life, special horticulture shows, and art exhibitions featuring local, national, and international artists. Ten acres of outdoor gardens include the new 2-acre Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation Children’s Garden, a multisensory recreational, artistic and educational marvel for families and children, set to open in May 2018. FREE TO SMILE FOUNDATION Who We Are: Free to Smile Foundation was founded in 2008 by Dr. Byron Henry, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and his wife, Stacy Henry. Free to Smile is dedicated to supporting and sustaining comprehensive, high-quality surgical and dental services to poor and underprivileged children and adolescents around the world. To this end, our volunteers and partner organizations provide free surgical, dental, and educational care to those we serve.

How We Impact the Community: As of October 2017, Free to Smile has completed 1,136 surgeries and served 3,351 dental patients with 48 missions to Cambodia, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Niger, the Philippines, Tibet, and Zimbabwe. Over the past 9 years, each of our volunteers have returned to their homes with a new perspective and dedication to continue giving back. One of our returning nurses wrote, “I am so grateful for the opportunity… to be part of this team, as it has opened my eyes to the way I live. I met professionals who live their life intentionally and now I intend to be responsible for the way I live going forward doing the same.”

What We Do: Free to Smile plans surgical and dental missions each year to several countries. We start by working with in-country partners to select mission sites and locate children in need. Next, we recruit medical staff, who work free of charge and pay for their own airfare and in-country expenses. We then coordinate medical credentialing and travel documents for volunteers and secure needed medical supplies and instruments. The Free to Smile team flies to the location for 7-10 days to perform cleft lip and palate surgeries, provide dental care and education, and train local medical staff.

Why We’re Important: Free to Smile volunteers repair cleft lip and palate deformities. Much more than just a cosmetic deformity, a child with a cleft lip or palate faces malnourishment, speech defects, ear and sinus infections, and social stigma and isolation. In impoverished areas, the medical treatment needed to repair a cleft lip or palate is either hard to find and financially inaccessible, or even totally nonexistent.

A one to two hour surgery gives the child and her family new hope for a full, healthy, and happy life. Free to Smile teams also treat and prevent dental disease. Often the concept of dentistry is unknown or absent in developing countries.

Dental disease has been linked to infection, malnutrition, weight loss, cardiovascular disease, and an overall reduced quality of life. With consistent dental care and education, a community’s overall health can be improved dramatically.

THE HARDY CENTER INC Who We Are: The Hardy Center is a non-profit organization founded in 2007 dedicated to providing innercity children and their families with the elements they need to be more viable in this society. We are endeavor to serving the needs of the Linden community bounded by Morse Rd on the north, 11th Ave on the south, I-71 on the west, and Sunbury Rd east. Its residents are among Columbus’s neediest. We started small with a summer lunch program that served 23 children and have grown to an average daily attendance of 350 during our 50 day summer camp in addition to our after school and Saturday programs.

Showing all children that there is more to espier to than what they see every day.

What We Do: We provide a safe, nurturing environment, free from bullying and intimidation. Each year, our programs serve over 1200 children and their families. We provide transportation, school-like instruction, homework help, tutoring, and 40,000 meals annually all at no cost.

We offer other learning opportunities, such as computer programming, life skills, nutrition education along with wood working sewing and auto maintenance.

Equally as important, we also have fun. Our kids enjoy chess club, fencing, Lego learning, martial arts, performing arts, and unicycle instruction - that's right, unicycle. We see lots of smiles as the kids get a chance to be kids.

How You Can Help: Our programming has impacted the lives of thousands of kids and their families but we can do so much more. We need funding to strengthen our programs.

Innovation is the key. We must engage professionals with new ideas and technologies to address the problems that seem to be overwhelming in the inner-city. Our summer reading program for example, would be much more effective if we could hire reading specialists to work with the many “limited” range students that are years behind grade level. We know that they can catch up if we can provide more intense intervention. We need funding to enlarge our afterschool program at this point we can accommodate 25 students providing them with transportation meals homework help and mentoring but we have over 100 applications. Our goal is not to maintain the status quo but to advance beyond it.

Why We’re Important: Our children face adversity and hardship at every turn. Most live in single parent households with mothers who are barely out of childhood themselves.

Drug use and crime are a part of their daily lives. Dropout rates are high and aspirations are low. We offer a holistic approach to giving kids the tools needed to not only survive, but thrive.

MARBURN ACADEMY Who We Are: Marburn Academy is an independent day school serving the educational needs of bright students with learning differences such as dyslexia, ADHD and executive function difficulties. Marburn educates more than 300 students year-round in its day school and summer programs in grades 2-12. It is the only school in Central Ohio with programs designed to address the full range of unique learning and personal development needs of students with learning differences. At Marburn Academy, we celebrate students who learn differently, empowering them to awaken their potential, to achieve success in school and life, and to affect positive chance in our communities.

MID-OHIO FOODBANK Who We Are: Mid- Ohio Foodbank works in the community to connect our hungry neighbors with nutritious food, stabilizing families today while helping them access resources for tomorrow so they can thrive for a lifetime.

How We Impact the Community: The Foodbank partners with an agency network that includes afterschool programs, community centers, daycares, emergency shelters, faith-based organizations, food pantries, senior centers, and soup kitchens to provide groceries and meals directly to people in need. The Foodbank’s South Side Roots and Urban Farms allow us to reach broadly and deeply across demographic groups and geography to address the local needs of specific communities. MOMENTUM-EXCELLENCE Who We Are: Momentum is a non-profit organization that engages children in dance, music, and performance to develop lifelong habits of self-discipline, teamwork, and excellence. Highly skilled teaching artists and keyboard accompanists work weekly with more than 1,000 students in elementary schools promoting life skills and deep joy through the experience of performing. Founded in 2003 by Monica Kridler, the program is based on the nationally acclaimed teaching method originated by world famous dancer Jacques d’Amboise more than 40 years ago. Momentum is currently celebrating its 15th year and is expanding its offerings in order to reach more children through the arts.

How We Impact the Community: Former US Secretary of Education, William Bennett stated, “The arts are an essential element of education, just like reading, writing, and arithmetic…music, dance, painting, and theater are all keys that unlock profound human understanding and accomplishment.” Through the generous support of individual, foundation, and corporate donors, Momentum is able to engage children in arts education enhancing their confidence and self-esteem. This not only impacts the children themselves, but also their family members who watch them perform in the culminating year-end performance. Momentum fills a void for children of any socio-economic background by educating and engaging the whole child, and contributing to an upward spiral of success.

What We Do: Momentum’s primary offering is its 30-week school based program in which 4th grade boys and girls participate in a weekly 45 minute dance class during their school day. Guiding principles are The Big Four: Do Your Best; Work Hard; Never Give Up; Be Healthy. The program culminates in a year end performance at the Davidson Theatre (formerly Capitol Theatre). Momentum is of no cost to the student and requires no special clothing or equipment. Every child participates, including those with disabilities or behavioral issues. Other Momentum offerings include Advanced Teams, a Community Performance Troupe, Momentum After School, Early Learners program and Momentum University—a two-week summer camp.

How You Can Help: Momentum relies heavily on the generosity of individual, foundation, and corporate support in order to engage children in dance, music and performance.

External funding is essential in order to keep our programs accessible. A modest fee per participant is provided by participating schools and subsidized in large part through Momentum’s donor base. In our 15th year, Momentum will pilot Chance to Dance, a program to reach children with disabilities, specifically children with autism, who are blind, or in wheelchairs. The success of Chance to Dance and each of our other offerings is only possible through community support.

Ohio State is one of only 49 Comprehensive Cancer Centers and one of only a few funded by the NCI to conduct phase I and II clinical trials on novel anticancer drugs sponsored by the NCI. As the cancer program’s 308-bed adult patient-care component, The James is ranked among America’s Best Hospitals for cancer care by U.S. News and World Report.

OPERA COLUMBUS Who We Are: Artistic Director Peggy Kriha Dye’s vision is for Opera Columbus to be the premier regional opera company in the United States, that launches the careers of the best emerging talent in the world. PELOTONIA Who We Are: Founded in Columbus, Ohio in 2008, Pelotonia is a grassroots movement that was established with a goal to end cancer. We are a community of people whose lives have been affected by cancer and who were inspired to do something about it. Whether that means cheering along the side of the road during our annual bike ride, hosting a fundraiser, making a donation or volunteering their time, every single person who is a part of this movement is making a difference in the advancement of cancer research.

How We Impact the Community: Year after year, through the dedication of our Riders, Virtual Riders, Volunteers, and Donors, Pelotonia’s community continues to grow in Columbus, OH and nationwide. Thanks to the incredibly generous support from our local funding partners, 100 percent of every dollar raised by Pelotonia Riders, Virtual Riders and Volunteers goes directly to fund cancer research at OSUCCC-James. As a direct result of these fundraising efforts, Pelotonia researchers have developed life-saving drugs, discovered cancer-causing gene mutations and saved lives.
