From the Editor-in-Chief

Since I was a young child, I remember the importance in volunteering, donating support, funds, and effort back into the community. During my grade school and high school years I also had the opportunity to go on multiple service projects around the city, nation, and even into Monterrey, Mexico. Through these experiences and others, I've seen firsthand how the passionate work of staff members, volunteers and other organizations creates amazing differences in the lives of friends and neighbors - and in the quality of life in our community.

When I began publishing the Cincinnati edition of Sophisticated Living a year and a half ago, I made supporting charitable groups a priority in our editorial content. We continually support organizations and their major events, and attempt to bring their story to life each issue. As I have gotten to learn more and more about these organizations and the local community that supports them, I felt it a necessity to continue to educate our readers about these great organizations.

One obstacle I've noticed time and again is that it can be difficult for a cause to stand out. So we present to you, Sophisticated Giving Charity Register. A reference guide for non-profits, you will be provided a core overview of the ‘who, what, why’ for each organization, and of course the ever important ‘how’ we as a community can help support these meaningful groups. I also hope the comprehensive annual event calendar will be utilized throughout the year.

The goal is simple, that the Sophisticated Giving Charity Register educates, informs, and inspires Sophisticated Living readers to help continue these important charitable endeavors. Our tri-state community has so much to offer, and I am honored that I can share a small glimpse into these amazing organizations!

We advocate for healthy policy changes and had a big win in 2016 when learning CPR became a high school graduation requirement in the state of Ohio.

What We Do: To improve the lives of all Americans, we provide public health education in a variety of ways. We’re the nation’s leader in CPR education training. We help people understand the importance of healthy lifestyle choices. We provide science-based treatment guidelines to healthcare professionals to help them provide quality care to their patients. We educate lawmakers, policymakers and the public as we advocate for changes to protect and improve the health of our communities.

Who We Are: BHGH Cincinnati offers academically capable and motivated children from unstable home lives an opportunity to succeed. They may have faced obstacles like poverty, guardian’s drug and/or alcohol abuse, guardian’s death, but with the support of BHGH they are able to overcome problems instead of perpetuating them.

How You Can Help: There are numerous ways to be a part of BHGH and the life changing program we offer: become a tutor or mentor, bring dinner to one of our houses, help with an event, identify organizations and individuals that might want to support our cause; tickets to an event for our scholars, clothing or a financial donation – every contribution helps!

What We Do: Children enter the residential program between the ages of 9 and 14, voluntarily, with support from guardians. They live in supervised homes through high school graduation where they receive mentoring, tutoring, tuition support and quality programming. Additional educational opportunities include summer enrichment programs, educational workshops, internship and job placement.

CANCER FAMILY CARE

Who We Are: Cancer Family Care is a nonprofit organization that helps children and adults cope with the effects of a cancer diagnosis in the family. We are known throughout the Greater Cincinnati region as a force of compassion and strength in the face of cancerrelated illness and loss.

Additional services include free wigs, therapeutic massage and Healing Touch sessions for cancer patients and at reduced rates to caregivers. Our programs are available at six area offices, and to ensure continuity of care, our social workers and counselors are glad to make house calls, when necessary. Our Treehouse Children’s Program is schoolbased and offers both individual and group therapy for children and teens ages 5-18.

What We Do: Cancer Family Care provides individual, couple and family counseling to anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis or loss from the disease. Our therapists are all Master’s Level trained social workers and counselors. We also offer free wigs, oncology massage and Healing Touch to cancer patients and at a reduced rate to caregivers. Our Treehouse Children’s Program includes individual and group therapy in addition to Camp Courage, our day camp for children dealing with cancer or a cancer loss in the family.

How You Can Help: Our Treehouse Children’s Program is offered at no charge. Our adult counseling program does bill insurance if appropriate and co-pays are on a sliding fee basis if clients are able to pay. No one is ever turned away due lack of insurance coverage or ability to pay co-payments. The number one stressor for those dealing with cancer is finances. Because of United Way funding and our generous donors, we are able to help families deal with the added stress without incurring more financial hardships caused by counseling fees.

Why We’re Important: Over the next decade, the number of new cancer cases is expected to go up, mostly because of an aging population. Because cancer patients overall are living longer, the number of cancer survivors is expected to go up from about 11.7 million in 2007 to 18 million by 2020. People who have cancer may find the physical, emotional, and social effects of the disease to be stressful. People who are able to use effective coping strategies to deal with stress, such as relaxation and stress management techniques, have been shown to have lower levels of depression, anxiety, and symptoms related to the cancer and its treatment.

CINCINNATI ASSOCIATION FOR THE BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED (CABVI) Who We Are: Since 1911, CABVI provides counseling, rehabilitation, information and employment services to people who have severe vision loss of all ages in the Greater Cincinnati region. Through all of its programs and services, it strives to help those who are blind, visually or print impaired lead full and independent lives. CABVI provides services to over 5,000 people annually. We also serve adjoining counties as needed.

How You Can Help: CABVI relies on community financial support to help us make a difference in the lives of people who are blind or visually impaired. Changes in government funding and restrictions on private insurance coverage mean more and more of the 5,000+ clients we serve each year experience some sort of financial challenge.

Many of our clients want to work and support themselves.

They want to be able to pay for the services they receive at CABVI. However, with a 65% national unemployment rate for people with vision loss, those who want to work often cannot find jobs. At CABVI, approximately 42% of our employees are blind or visually impaired and we are expanding to create more employment opportunities. Financial gifts from the community allow CABVI to provide vital adaptive equipment and instruction to empower people who are blind or visually impaired with opportunities to seek independence.

What We Do: CABVI programs include Early Childhood and Youth Services, Social Services, Vision Rehabilitation Therapy, Orientation and Mobility Services, Low Vision Services, Radio Reading Services, Talking Book Machine Services, Personalized Talking Print Services, Volunteer Services, and Access Technology Services. CABVI provides employment opportunities in our Industries Program (for people who are legally blind or visually impaired). Our Communication Center provides training for individuals who would like to pursue a career in customer service. We sell office products and other supplies through VIE Ability, a social enterprise that provides employment for people with vision loss. CABVI also operates a Base Supply Center, called Office Runway, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base that sells blind made products and employs people who are blind. THE CINCINNATI EYE INSTITUTE FOUNDATION Who We Are: The CEI Foundation is a nonprofit committed to supporting programs designed to promote and maintain a lifetime of good vision through three initiatives: Community Outreach, Education of Eye Care Professionals, and the support of Research that points the way to new and more effective treatments and possible cures for eye disease.

How We Serve the Community: The four free, adult vision clinics that The Foundation operates in Cincinnati are the only free adult vision clinics in a three state area. They have provided care to almost 6,000 patients and continue to serve 2,000 patients annually. Whether it is free glasses, or diagnosing cataracts or glaucoma and referring to UC’s Ophthalmology Clinic for surgery, vision clinic patients get the care they need to remain independent.

The Dr. Richard S. Kerstine Outreach Program has touched another 21,000 lives with its screenings and aging eye lectures. Approximately 3,000 individuals participate every year in these programs, which are held in community centers, churches, retirement homes and senior centers throughout the region.

The Foundation’s educational programs for eye care professionals and research support are improving the level of eye care in our community by ensuring that professionals have the latest and most effective treatments for eye disease.

Approximately 175 Doctors of Optometry and approximately 100 techs and nurses participate in continuing educational programs. The Foundation is supporting between three and five research programs each year.

What We Do: The CEI Foundation’s mission is structured around its three initiatives: Community Outreach consists of two programs—The Dr. Richard Kerstine Vision Outreach Program and a system of free, adult vision clinics located in poor Cincinnati neighborhoods with high unemployment.

The Kerstine Vision Outreach Program provides basic screening and lectures on the aging eye throughout the region. It has screened and lectured to over 21,000 since its founding in 2009.

The CEI Foundation also operates four, free adult vision clinics in poor Cincinnati neighborhoods. Each clinic serves adults with incomes below 200% of the Federal Poverty level and no public or private eye insurance. Patients receive a comprehensive, dilated eye exam; free glasses if needed through our partner, the OneSight Foundation; and surgical referral and follow up to the University of Cincinnati’s Ophthalmology Clinic. These clinics see 2,000 patients annually.

Education of Eye Care Professionals is provided through The Foundation’s continuing Education Program for Doctors of Optometr y, Ophthalmic technicians and nurses. It also provides financial support to UC’s Ophthalmology resident program.

The Foundation provides growing financial support for Ophthalmic Research that may result in new treatments and cures for eye disease.

THE CINCINNATI INTERNATIONAL WINE FESTIVAL Who We Are: The Cincinnati International Wine Festival is a charitable, non-profit organization founded in 1991 to raise funds and distribute grants in the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area while promoting the wine industry.

We will celebrate our 27th year of giving back on March 2-4, 2017 at the Duke Energy Center. The Midwest’s premier Wine Festival, with Kroger as presenting sponsor, will feature more than 700 wines from over 250 wineries. Guests will also enjoy delicious food and a silent auction. Last year 36 TriState charities received grants totalling $350,000.

How We Serve the Community: We serve the community by distributing grants to local charities. Our charities fall into the categories of arts, education, health and human services. We are proud to support 90.9 WGUC, Freestore Foodbank, Cancer Family Care, and many other wonderful organizations locally. Why We’re Important: Since 1991, the Cincinnati International Wine Festival has given back over five million dollars to local charities. Each February, we hold a Wine Competition where judges participate in a blind tasting of wines that will be on the floor of the Grand Tastings. Nationally recognized gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded. We also help support the wine industry by providing wineries from around the world the opportunity to gain exposure to the trade and the general public. CINCINNATI UNION BETHEL Who We Are: Cincinnati Union Bethel is the longestrunning social services agency in the region. Our mission, since 1830, is to provide affordable housing, supportive services, and educational programs that assist low-income women, children, families and communities to realize their greatest potential. Through our three programs, the, Early Childhood Education, Off the Streets, and the Anna Louise Inn, we have been growing hope in the community for over 186 years.

What We Do: Early Childhood Education: For over 30 years, CUB has operated Head Start preschools that prepare 3- to 5-year old children physically, socially, and academically for successful entry into kindergarten. In addition to educating children from economically challenged communities, the program provides supportive services to their families.

Off the Streets®: Off the Streets® is a program that addresses the recovery needs of victims of domestic human trafficking and sexual exploitation. The program helps identify the women’s unique needs and coordinates appropriate resources for basic needs, housing, medical care, mental health, substance abuse, education, and employment.

How You Can Help: Attendance is the single-most important factor in student development ( Journal of Educational Research). But unfortunately, the children we serve face many barriers getting to school. Children of single parents living in poverty face unreliable or no access to a car, unsafe neighborhoods, the stressors of multiple children, bills, public transportation costs, extreme weather conditions, and lack of family support are obstacles that can make it difficult, if not impossible to get a child to school.

Education is the greatest social and economic equalizer, and transportation provides essential access to education.

Anna Louise Inn : Since 1909, the Anna Louise Inn has provided safe and affordable housing for women. We offer referral services and a sense of community for a marginalized population—women with housing instability due to factors such as poverty, poor health, mental health issues, or ineligibility for other housing.

Why We’re Important: Due to the current drug/heroin epidemic in our community, along with the fact that Cincinnati has a massive problem with persistent poverty (one in three Cincinnatians fall below the poverty line— our city’s poverty rate is almost twice the national average according to U.S. Census data), the needs of the population we serve have reached critical proportions.

COOPERATIVE FOR EDUCATION Who We Are: Cooperative for Education (CoEd) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping Guatemalan schoolchildren break the cycle of poverty through education. Since 1996, we’ve implemented sustainable textbook, computer, reading, and scholarship programs in 280 Guatemalan schools. Our development office is located on the Eastern edge of Mt. Airy Forest in Cincinnati, Ohio, while our program offices are located in Guatemala City and San Lucas, Sacatepéquez, Guatemala.

• Reading: Our Culture of Reading Program students score 58% better in reading comprehension and writing than students at comparison schools.

• Succeeding: 95% of graduates of our Computer Program go on to find employment or further their education.

• Paying it Forward: 53% of graduates of our Scholarship Program are now paying for their younger siblings’ education.

What We Do: True to our name, we work cooperatively with parents, teachers, principals, and students to create strategies for educational improvement in their schools. Our Textbook Program and Computer Centers Program provide vital educational tools to rural schools and operate on a 100% financially self-sustaining model so that these tools will be available to students for generations to come. Our Culture of Reading Program (CORP) trains primary school teachers in effective reading pedagogy, so that they can transform their students into competent and enthusiastic readers. Finally, our Scholarship & Youth Development Program helps promising but needy students graduate and become professionals..

The average indigenous Guatemalan completes less than three years of school, due in part to the abysmal quality of education. Without an education, many are forced to migrate (often illegally) to the U.S. in search of better opportunities, and many are now our neighbors. They face perils along the way, including the break-up of the family unit, exploitation by unscrupulous human smugglers, and death. No one should have to face these dangers in search of a better future.

DAV (DISABLED AMERICAN VETERANS) Who We Are: DAV (Disabled American Veterans), founded in 1920 and headquartered in the Greater Cincinnati area, provides a lifetime of services and support to ill and injured veterans. Every year, DAV helps more than 1 million veterans by helping them gain access to health care, disability, educational and other benefits they’ve earned and connects them to meaningful employment opportunities. DAV receives no government funding. All programs and services are funded by grateful Americans who want to help ensure the nation keeps its promises to the brave men and women who served and sacrificed for our country.

How We Serve the Community: From its earliest beginning in Cincinnati in 1920, DAV has been the nation’s leader in ensuring injured veterans do not fall through the cracks.

Sadly, our work is never done. Far too many veterans have great difficulty gaining access to the benefits they have earned and transitioning to civilian life. DAV veterans advocates nationwide — all of whom are disabled veterans themselves — provide personal support and professional assistance, all at no charge.

DOWN SYNDROME ASSOCIATION OF GREATER CINCINNATI Who We Are: The Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati (DSAGC) was founded by a group of parents in 1981 to improve the quality of life for individuals with Down syndrome. Today, the mission of the DSAGC is to empower individuals, educate families, enhance communities and together, celebrate the extraordinary lives of people with Down syndrome. The DSAGC serves 12 counties in the Greater Cincinnati area. Approximately 1,400 individuals with Down syndrome and their families, as well as teachers, medical professionals, employers and more, benefit from the programs and resources of the DSAGC.

How We Serve the Community: The DSAGC has an incredible impact on the individuals and families we serve, as well as our community. For instance, each year: • 35 families who receive a diagnosis prenatally or postbirth receive knowledge, resources and support.

• 42 students retained important academic skills through the Summer Tutoring program.

• 30 adults participated in the Independent Living Retreat, learning important skills that lead to greater independence.

• 235 individuals learned new skills through Empowerment Classes.

• More than 75 schools learned how to create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment.

• More than 750 healthcare professionals received current health information related to Down syndrome.

What We Do: The DSAGC provides emotional support, information, education, programs, resources, connections and more to individuals with Down syndrome and their families. For instance, we offer Empowerment Classes, such as sign language, music therapy, fitness, cooking and relationship classes, to help individuals build important life skills. To educate families, we provide quality support and information through educational workshops, networking opportunities and publications/newsletters. Furthermore, we enhance the community by cultivating relationships and building awareness among healthcare professionals, teachers, leaders, neighbors, employers and others so that anyone who impacts the lives of individuals with Down syndrome will welcome them with fairness, enthusiasm and encouragement.

Why We’re Important: Down syndrome is the most common genetic condition and occurs when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21. This extra chromosome impacts an individual’s development and can increase chances for developing other medical conditions. While there are some common characteristics and physical traits associated with Down syndrome, each individual is unique and has many strengths to be celebrated. While the DSAGC provides many direct services for individuals with Down syndrome, we also fill a unique need by providing social and emotional support to families. The DSAGC also advocates for acceptance and inclusion within the community.

THE GREEN BERET FOUNDATION’S CINCINNATI CHAPTER’S GREEN BERET CLASSIC Who We Are: The Green Beret Foundation’s Cincinnati Chapter is a community based veteran charity whose purpose is to build awareness of the Foundation’s mission to serve our nation’s most elite soldiers, the Army’s Special Forces Green Berets, by connecting them, and their families with the resources needed to succeed in the mission ahead. The Green Beret Foundation (GBF) is a national nonprofit that distributes no less than 85 cents of every dollar raised to cover the cost of Casualty Support, Extended Support, Family Support, and Transition Support services not covered by military insurance or the Veterans Administration.

Berets remains unfinished. In the coming months there will be renewed demand for Green Berets— from the recently announced deployments to Iraq to train native security forces to getting ahead of emerging threats to U.S. security because of ambiguous conflicts in hotspots around the globe. As a nation we need to answer the call to support Green Berets and their families ensuring they are ready for their next mission.

How We Serve the Community: Through our actions and outreach activities GBF’s Cincinnati Chapter serves as a community based platform to connect with key audiences, drive conversations, and raise visibility of Special Forces Green Berets and the Foundation’s mission to support them.

What We Do: As GBF’s Cincinnati Chapter we conduct community charity events to raise awareness and funds so every Green Beret and his family is able to live a life of honor, dignity, and purpose while serving, healing from injury or transitioning into civilian life. Special Forces Green Berets sustain the highest casualty rate per capita in all of Special Operations Forces, (SOF). Sixty percent of all casualties in SOF are sustained by Green Berets. Local events include active duty and retired Green Berets from the Tristate area.

How You Can Help: Since 2015 Tristate businesses, and individuals have supported the Cincinnati Chapter’s Green Beret Classic’s annual events through sponsorships, individual donations, and volunteering. Who We Are: IMPACT Autism™ is an all- volunteer charity that believes that both the quantity and quality of care options for those with autism are horribly deficient, especially for adults. We seek to change that and have formed an organization with the mission, the people and the ideas to move beyond the status quo. We raise funds to support innovative programs that change the status quo.

Why We’re Important: Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person’s ability to communicate, respond to surroundings, or form relationships with others. INTER PARISH MINISTRY Who We Are: Inter Parish Ministry is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded 52 years ago by an ecumenical group of churches to help low-income families nurture and educate their young children. In 2016, IPM provided food, clothing and communal support to 4,600 families in Clermont County and eastern Hamilton County.

Though IPM is a faith-based organization, it empowers clients with information, support and services to improve their lives regardless of their personal beliefs.

What We Do: Inter Parish Ministry serves clients from its headquarters in Newtown and service centers in Batavia and Amelia. In addition to the food, clothing and personal care items needy families select year-around from choice pantries, mobile pantries deliver necessities to locations where people have limited access to grocery stores. IPM clients may also receive back-to-school supplies and, during the holidays, purchase new toys for their children at discounted prices and receive gifts from an Adopt-a-Family program. IPM volunteers provide caring attention when clients visit or shop, and trained staff members refer people to additional resources through the collaborative Clermont County Safety Net Alliance. Through agency referrals, IPM also provides limited emergency assistance funding for rent or utilities.

Who We Are: JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. The strength of JDRF lies in an exclusive focus and singular influence on the worldwide effort to end T1D. JDRF Southwest Ohio serves a 43-county territory covering Cincinnati, Dayton, northern Kentucky and southeast Indiana and an estimated 30,800 individuals living with T1D. A 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, JDRF is one of the nation’s most efficient nonprofits, with over 80 cents of every dollar contributed going directly to the organizational mission.

How We Serve the Community: The annual JDRF Southwest Ohio TypeOneNation Summit is a free community education conference which attracts 1,400 registrants and is the biggest in the nation across all other JDRF chapters. Other community outreach activities occur throughout the year in an effort to help improve outcomes for people living with type 1 diabetes, as well as to educate those who are unaware of the disease of the warning signs and symptoms. The chapter also has a formal Youth Ambassador program, which empowers young people with T1D to raise their voice and share their stories of overcoming the challenges of living with diabetes. Part of the Youth Ambassador initiative is the JDRF Advocacy program.

What We Do: JDRF Southwest Ohio hosts a variety of community outreach and fundraising events annually to raise money to fund life-changing T1D research. The chapter’s marquee events are the Cincinnatian of the Year Gala held each year in May, raising $1.2M, the One Walk program raising $1.1M and the Ride to Cure Diabetes Program which raises $565K. Other events include the Dayton Gala, Bourbon & Bowtie Bash, and other community events throughout the year.

How You Can Help: JDRF Southwest Ohio has recently realized unprecedented success, achieving new overall chapter fundraising records for the past two consecutive years. This success would not be possible without the incredible grassroots support of community volunteers, including both those with a T1D connection and those without. Why We’re Important: JDRF was founded in 1970 as a grassroots movement by parents of children with T1D. The mission of JDRF is to not only fund research to improve lives of those living with T1D, and to ultimately find a cure, but to also build awareness of the disease.

Half of new T1D diagnoses are in adults, and 80% of the overall T1D population is comprised of adults. T1D is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone people need to get energy from food. T1D can strike anyone at any age at any time and has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle.

Who We Are: The League for Animal Welfare’s mission is to reduce the number of homeless cats and dogs in Greater Cincinnati by providing a compassionate no-kill animal shelter and programs that promote responsible pet care.

Founded in 1949, the League is a privately funded, nonprofit organization and holds a Charity Navigator 4-star rating for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency.

How You Can Help: Adopt a cat or dog from the League and save the life of a homeless animal and open up shelter space for another animal in need. What We Do: The League operates the oldest and largest no-kill shelter in the area. Homeless cats and dogs receive on-site veterinary care including spay/neuter surgery, behavioral training and socialization needed to help them transition to life as a family pet. The League’s shelter has the capacity to care for about 100 animals at any given time with the goal of permanent placement in appropriate, screened, loving homes.

Why We’re Important: The League saves the lives of cats and dogs - animals who are homeless through no fault of their own. Many of them have had to leave behind the only home and family they have ever known due to illness, death or just unexpected changes in their owner’s life.

LINDNER CENTER OF HOPE Who We Are: Lindner Center of HOPE is a comprehensive mental health center, providing varying levels of services and programs to individuals of all ages and families suffering with mental health and addiction issues.

By utilizing the Institute of Medicine’s (10M) report, Improving the Quality of Health Care for Mental and Substance-Use Conditions: Quality Chasm Series (2006) as a blueprint, the Center implemented a quality framework for delivering the best possible mental health care. Leaders at the Lindner Center of HOPE have taken each area of deficiency identified in the mental health care system and addressed it with a patient-centered system of care.

How We Serve the Community: Since opening in 2008, Lindner Center of HOPE has established a reputation as one of the top mental health centers in the nation. More than 25,000 patients from all 50 states and countries ranging from the Bahamas to the United Arab Emirates have received services. We have had more than 213,000 patient visits when outpatient care is included. The Center has increased access to mental health care, while setting a new quality standard. MASTER PROVISIONS Who We Are: Master Provisions is the only faith-based organization that provides food, clothing and orphan care to people in need in the Tri-State, around the U.S. and internationally. Founded by Madeira native Roger Babik in 1994, the organization has grown to touch the lives of 35,000 people each month. Volunteers make this vital work possible. Last year, over 4000 individuals served under the leadership of our staff of six full-time employees and three part-time employees.

Master Provisions has nine Board members who are active business and community leaders from throughout Greater Cincinnati.

How We Serve the Community: Over 100 nonprofit groups received food from Master Provisions last year, including soup kitchens, neighborhood food pantries, shelters and weekend backpack programs for children.

Partnering with Isaiah House, Master Provisions delivers food and logistical support for the Last Saturday mobile food pantries in Covington and Ludlow, Kentucky. These programs aid over 600 families each month. Master Provisions also operates a social enterprise making expedited freight deliveries for local businesses. The enterprise earns some revenue to support our core mission, offers part-time work to truck drivers, and helps some drivers prepare for transition to employment with local logistics firms.

What We Do: Master Provisions receives donations of surplus food and clothing, manages these resources, and distributes them to partner nonprofits who serve people in need. In the Tri-State, Master Provisions distributed over 4.4 million pounds of primarily fresh foods last year, as well as winter clothing. We send high-quality used clothing to partner organizations locally, in Appalachia, other locations in the US, and some mission partners overseas. We recruit financial sp onsors who supp or t in-home orphan care for children in Togo and Ukraine, and education for orphans in Guatemala. Each year, we also lead groups on short-term international mission trips.

Matthew 25 provides food to the hungry, water to the thirsty, clothing to the naked, shelter to the homeless, medical care to the ill and humanitarian supplies to those in need.

Additionally, Matthew 25 is committed to educating the public on the conditions and needs of the “least of these” and by providing resources for action.

How We Serve the Community: In 2015, Matthew 25: Ministries distributed more than 500,000 pounds of humanitarian aid in the Greater Cincinnati area. Products included coats and clothing, food and beverages, personal care products and medical supplies, educational kits and supplies and were distributed to food pantries and shelters, rescue and recovery houses, healthcare clinics, residential care facilities and more. Matthew 25’s Hunger Food Drive distributed 125,000 pounds of food to 45 local pantries and shelters in 2015. Matthew 25 also provides educational opportunities through the Global Village and opportunities for positive action through their volunteer program.

What We Do: By rescuing and reusing products from major corporations and manufacturers, Matthew 25: Ministries distributes more than 15,000,000 pounds of humanitarian supplies and disaster relief each year, helping approximately 20,000,000 people. Additionally, Matthew 25: Ministries produces or repurposes food, paint, notebooks, pencils and pill bottles, saving millions of pounds of products from the landfill. Matthew 25: Ministries also supports community development and public works projects in developing countries which provide sustainable development and capacity building for entire villages and regions. Matthew 25’s Disaster Relief Services provide relief, recovery and rebuilding support to areas suffering from catastrophic disasters.

SPRINGER SCHOOL AND CENTER Who we are: Springer School and Center provides the only school in the region devoted entirely to the education of children with learning disabilities (LD).

Through its outreach programs, parents and professionals develop an understanding of learning disabilities and the most effective means to address them. Springer’s day school serves 200 students in grades 1-8, with a teacherto-student ratio of 1:6. The school features research-based curriculum, specially designed for children with learning disabilities. Springer’s center builds learning potential – one student, one parent, one educator at a time, through community outreach programs.

Springer, students will be successful in a traditional classroom, and in life beyond school.

How we serve the community: Springer’s day school offers an environment in which students with LD can find success. The center’s professional development programs raise awareness among local teachers, and equip them to better serve the needs of their students with LD and ADHD. And the center offers parents referral and consulting services, and classes that build parents’ understanding of the learning process and offer strategies for managing their children’s learning difficulties.

What we do: Springer’s day school designs a customized comprehensive academic program for each student, including instruction in art, music and physical education.

Students use technolog y tools that support their success at Springer, and equip them for success beyond, including a one-to-one laptop program in grades 6-8.

Springer’s center provides programming for students, parents and professionals that reflects current thinking in the field of learning disabilities and the education of those with LD and ADHD. How We Serve the Community: St. Vincent de Paul provides emergency assistance for our neighbors' basic needs while deliberately focusing on person-to-person interactions. STEPPING STONES, INC. Who We Are: Stepping Stones is a place, a program and a team of people you can trust to meet the needs of Greater Cincinnati’s children, teens and adults with disabilities and their families.

We are a United Way partner agency serving more than 1,000 people with disabilities in day and overnight programs that increase independence and promote individual success.

Stepping Stones has a 53-year history of excellence and received the Better Business Bureau’s Torch Award in 2016, recognizing exceptional ethics in dealings with the community, participants and staff. Our mission is to increase independence, improve lives and promote inclusion for children and adults with disabilities.

Stepping Stones is one of the largest volunteer sites in Greater Cincinnati, with more than 1,500 volunteers annually.

Summer camp programs draw close to 1,000 high school student volunteers.

The Stepping Stones volunteer program has changed lives and strengthened the community over the past five decades. Former volunteers tell us the Stepping Stones experience led to careers in special education, physical therapy, medicine and other disabilities-related fields.

How You Can Help: • Give your time : Volunteer with trained staff in programs or in projects ranging from landscaping and camp prep to special events.

• Donate: One-time or annual donations make our programs possible.

• Leave a Legacy: Planned giving through a will or trust creates a legacy of support and care.

• Attend an Event: Join warm-hearted supporters at the Open Your Heart dinner in February, Sporting Clay tournament in April, Golf Classic in June or the tented Bloom party in September.

What We Do: Stepping Stones creates pathways to independence for people with disabilities.

Programs include Greater Cincinnati’s oldest Summer Day Camp for children with disabilities, Respites and overnight Staycations for teens and adults, Saturday Kids/ Young Adults Clubs providing extracurricular activities, Adult Day Services focusing on health, active lifestyle, social interaction, and independence and Step-Up alternative education for students with autism. New programs include Sensory Needs Transition, helping students with autism transition from high school to adulthood, and Adult Social Engagement, providing opportunities to socialize during the evening and weekend for adults with disabilities. Program sites are in Indian Hill, Batavia, Norwood and Monfort Heights.

TENDER MERCIES Who We Are: Established in 1985, Tender Mercies is a non-profit organization that transforms the lives of homeless adults with mental illness by providing security, dignity, and community in a place they call home. We provide life-changing housing and services to some of the most vulnerable in our community. Our dedicated and compassionate staff, donors and volunteers make it possible for the men and women we serve to regain selfdetermination and independence.

Tender Mercies helps our community to remain vibrant by providing customized support homeless individuals with mental illness need to become stable again. Our program makes it possible for residents to become contributing, productive members of our community again. Tender Mercies rebuilds lives and reunites residents with family and friends at only $50/day. Our proven model prevents a return to homelessness by providing more than just a bed.

What We Do: We provide permanent housing and support programs to over 150 homeless adults with mental illness each year. Tender Mercies helps its residents improve their quality of life and ability to become independent.

Tender Mercies creates stability and prevents a return to homelessness by assisting residents with disability benefits, job training, independent living skills education, and counseling. Tender Mercies provides more than a place to stay. Each resident has their own room with a key. Living in a welcoming community with security and dignity is essential for recovery. All buildings are monitored and residents are provided with ongoing support from experienced staff, and volunteers.

How You Can Help: You can help in a number of ways: • Make a donation or include Tender Mercies in your will – any amount makes a difference • Adopt-A-Room – provides all the comforts of home (type & levels vary) • Prepare and serve a meal to our residents – different size buildings to match varying budgets and capacity • Host a Donation Drive – Host a drive at work, church, or other organization to collect toiletries, cleaning supplies, linens and other household supplies.

• Volunteer on a Committee – various opportunities available • Become an Ambassador – tell others about how they can help, invite them to volunteer with you, etc.

Why We’re Important: We do more than provide housing; we save and transform lives. Mental illness is devastating and is one of the leading causes of homelessness. It really can and does happen to anyone at any time, even those with professional jobs and nice homes. Many of the men and women who come to Tender Mercies have been on the streets for years alone, lost and hungry, struggling to survive every day. Tender Mercies is the only organization in the Southwest Ohio region that solely provides permanent housing and on-site programs for homeless adults with mental illness.
