Lori Holt

Bee in my Bonnet for Riley Blake Designs

I’m a small town farm girl who spent her childhood playing in the sunshine on tractors and climbing trees. I grew up happily immersed in all things domestic. I’m the middle child of a large family and live closely surrounded by grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins My mom says that I was practically born with a needle in my hand My earliest memories are of sitting underneath the quilting frames and threading needles for my grandma and great aunts until I eventually grew old enough to make stitches of my own.

As a girl, I spent many happy hours designing and sewing clothes for my dolls, crocheting and doing embroidery. My deep love of all needle art comes from the early influence of my mother and grandmothers, who were my first teachers Now I teach others to create and I find joy in using my creativity to make beautiful things. I draw inspiration for my designs from the beauty of the earth and from the love of God and family memories. I am drawn to stacks of colorful fabrics, pretty papers, aprons, buttons, embroidery, old dishes, gingham and polka dots, sprinkles and glitter and all things vintage.

I am married to my best friend and childhood sweetheart and together we have 3 creative, intelligent children, and a new baby grand daughter Life is good! I sew, draw, create, decorate and re-decorate on a daily basis. I think of myself as the luckiest girl in the world, because I get to do what I love everyday. I feel blessed to have my own company called, “Bee in my Bonnet,” which I began in 1994 My wish is that my designs in both patterns and fabric, will inspire others to create and will also instill the desire to pass down the valuable lessons of days gone by taught to us by our mothers and grandmothers.

THE POWER OF A QUILT

THE EMOTIONAL IMPACT OF GIVING AND RECEIVING HANDMADE GIFTS

The art form and the act of quilting has been in existence for centuries The skills and techniques have been built upon and passed down from generation to generation, with each quilter adding their own touch of creativity and passion.

While quilts are often seen as functional items used for warmth and comfort, they also hold a significant emotional value. The act of giving and receiving a handmade quilt has a power that extends beyond the physical item. It represents connection, love, and comfort in perpetuity.

Let's explore the emotional impact of giving and receiving handmade quilts and why they hold such a special place in people's hearts.

SEWENDIPITOUS

THE GIFT OF CONNECTION

Handmade quilts are often passed down through families, connecting people across generations. A quilt can represent the strength of a family bond, the love between friends, or the shared experiences in a community.

When you give someone a handmade quilt, you offer them more than just a physical item. You are manifesting the heart's emotions and bridging a connection that can last a lifetime. There is something special about knowing someone put their time, effort, and creativity into making something just for you. The act of quilting is a labor of love. When someone receives a handmade quilt as a gift, they are given a tangible representation of that love, care, and connection. Dare we say that few things can have the same impact

THE COMFORT OF A QUILT

Quilts have long been associated with comfort and warmth. They have been used to protect people from the cold or provide a soft cushion for a cozy, peaceful sleep. However, the comfort that a handmade quilt offers goes beyond the physical.

When someone receives a handmade quilt, they know it has been made with purpose, care and attention to detail. They can feel the warmth and love that has gone into every stitch. It is one of the invisible ingredients that defies explanation. This feeling of comfort can bring a sense of peace and contentment, even in the most challenging times Again, the magic of handmade quilts transcends the pieces of the whole

THE HEALING POWER OF QUILTS

Quilting has been shown to have therapeutic benefits for those who practice it. It can provide a sense of artistic expression, accomplishment and purpose, and helps many deal with stress and anxiety. However, it is not just the act of quilting that can be therapeutic. The act of receiving a handmade quilt can also be healing.

A quilt can provide a palpable source of comfort and healing when someone is going through a difficult time, whether it be an illness, a loss, or a major life change. The quilt can be a physical reminder that they are not alone, that someone cares for them, and that they have a source of connection during difficult times when hopelessness and loneliness become the pervasive emotions Again, it can serve as a tangible and intangible representation of hope and love and a reminder that there are people in their lives who will be there to support them A heartfelt gifted quilt can chase away not just the cold but the equal chill of loneliness

SEWENDIPITOUS

THE LEGACY OF A QUILT

Quilts' ability to transcend time is one of the most remarkable things about them. Quilts can be passed down from generation to generation, carrying with them the stories and memories of the people who made them and the people who received them.

A quilt can become a cherished family heirloom, a tangible link to the past, and a reminder of those who came before They can hold significant emotional value, not just for the original recipient but also for their descendants who come to possess them

Quilts can be a way of preserving memories and stories that might otherwise be lost

They can serve as a way of passing on family traditions and connecting people across generations A handmade quilt is not just an object; it is a piece of history that can carry on for generations to come

Handmade quilts hold a special place in people's hearts, representing the connections and love between people Whether it is a gift between friends, a family heirloom, or a source of comfort during difficult times, quilts hold an emotional value that extends beyond their physical form

Giving and receiving a handmade quilt is a powerful experience that can bring connection, comfort, healing, and legacy to those involved. Quilts represent the best of what it means to be human- the ability to create, connect, and show compassion to those around us.

Dopamine Decor:

The New Decorating Trend Tailor-Made For Quilters & Sewists

If you haven't heard of it yet, no worries! You will! It's growing fast and trending online everywhere. Come on, get happy! You get to make the rules!

It's called "dopamine decor," and it's a relatively new trend in interior design that focuses on creating a space that promotes feelings of happiness and well-being, positivity, and productivity, in addition to being aesthetically pleasing. In our crazy world today, it seems perfect to combat the negativity surrounding us. So, if this is your first time hearing about it, you'll love it as it ticks all the marks for quilters and sewists alike.

The idea behind dopamine decor is that you can increase your dopamine levels by surrounding yourself with things that make you feel good This neurotransmitter is associated with pleasure and reward This is a concept that quilters and sewists have used for years in designing and making their dream sewing and quilting rooms a reality, and the science, it would seem, has finally caught up

SEWENDIPITOUS

There are many benefits to incorporating dopamine decor into your home. For one, it can help reduce stress and anxiety and improve your mood and overall sense of wellbeing Additionally, dopamine decor can help to increase your productivity and creativity

Let's talk more about the dopamine decor style and how it is tailor-made (no pun intended) for quilters and sewists

To achieve the look, there are a few key elements that you should focus on First and foremost, you should create a space that is comfortable and inviting, with plenty of soft textures and cozy furnishings It would be best to incorporate plenty of natural light and greenery, as these elements have been shown to positively impact mood and well-being.

In terms of color scheme, dopamine decor tends to favor bright, cheerful colors like yellow, orange, and pink, as well as calming blues and greens. Avoid dull or muted colors, as these can have a negative effect on mood. It would be best if you also considered incorporating patterns and textures that are visually stimulating, such as bold geometric prints or intricate floral designs. Materials like wood, wool, and velvet can help create a cozy and inviting atmosphere

Regarding accessories and decor, there are many options to choose from Some popular choices include inspirational quotes, affirmations, and artwork and photographs that evoke positive emotions Again, this is where personalization and preferences come strongly into play Consider incorporating scented candles or essential oils, as these can help to create a relaxing and calming atmosphere Your personal touch with the items you select makes a big difference So include those things that bring you joy Lighting is also an important consideration Let in natural light when possible! Natural light can help to boost mood and focus.

SEWENDIPITOUS

At this point, the creative minds of the quilting and sewing community are probably swelling with ideas and joy! Yes, this dopamine decor movement is a dream come true, so rejoice and head to your local fabric shop or break into that favorite fabric stash you ' ve been saving You're made for this hot new trend!

This decor direction is all about taking personal satisfaction from creating (or purchasing) custom pieces for your home that speak to you. Whether you are a sewing and quilting enthusiast or a beginner just starting out, now is the perfect time to get creative and have some fun. From traditional quilt patterns to modern prints, utilizing the color and pattern selection guidelines and recommendations of the dopamine decor trend will have something for everyone. Select fabrics to make custom bedspreads, curtains, pillows, lampshades, or a quilt to add color and personality to any room in your house

The dopamine decor trend is about creating pieces that bring joy and fulfillment Whether you are making something for yourself or a loved one, you will be able to see the results of your hard work and take pride in the fact that you created something unique and beautiful The powerful and positive emotions that gifting or displaying handmade creations can bring make this decor practice all the more impactful

Overall, dopamine decor is a great way to create a space that promotes happiness, well-being, and productivity By incorporating the key elements of this trend into your home, you can create a space that feels welcoming, comfortable, and inspiring. Let your inner-child go wild. If you want that disco ball you ' ve had in the closet since the 70's then use it! Come on, get happy! Our time has come!

From Solo Quilter To Family Craft Night:

TIPS FOR GETTING EVERYONE INVOLVED

Quilting is a fun and fulfilling hobby that can be enjoyed by individuals of all ages and skill levels However, finding the motivation and time to quilt on your own can be challenging That's why involving your family in quilting can make it even more enjoyable and meaningful.

Let's explore tips for getting everyone in your family involved in quilting and how to create a fun and productive family craft night.

SEWENDIPITOUS

.01

CHOOSE FAMILYFRIENDLY PROJECTS

The first step to getting your family involved in quilting is to choose projects that are both ageappropriate and fun. Consider projects that are easy to follow, such as simple block patterns or fun fabric patches. Selecting projects that your family members can complete in one sitting can help them feel accomplished and excited.

.02 TAILOR YOUR PROJECTS TO EACH FAMILY MEMBER'S SKILL LEVEL

Just like you wouldn't give a difficult calculus problem to a kindergartner, it's essential to tailor your quilting projects to each family member's skill level. Consider involving your younger children in simple projects, such as making individual quilt blocks. Older children may be ready to tackle an entire quilt, while adults can work on more complex projects that may include detailed quilting or embroidery

.03

MAKE IT SOCIAL

Quilting can be a social activity, and sharing the experience with others can make it all the more enjoyable. Consider inviting friends and family over for a social quilting session, where everyone can work on their own projects while enjoying each other's company Don't forget the snacks and drinks to make it a true social event!

.04

SET UP A DEDICATED QUILTING SPACE

Creating a comfortable and dedicated quilting space can make quilting feel more inviting and accessible to your family members. Keep your quilting space organized and tidy, and have all your supplies easily accessible. Consider decorating your space with a few quilting-themed decorations to make it feel even more special.

SEWENDIPITOUS

.05 ATTEND QUILTING EVENTS

Attending quilting events or workshops can provide additional inspiration and motivation for your family members. Consider signing up for a local quilting workshop or attending a quilting expo. These events can provide opportunities to meet other quilters and learn new techniques

.06

EMBRACE TECHNOLOGY

Incorporating technology into your quilting can help make it more engaging for your family members While this may not seem like an obvious choice, younger generations may find the technology component more to their liking, skills and interest. Consider using design software to create your quilt patterns or searching for quilting tutorials online. Technology can also help you share your progress with others, whether it's through social media or online quilting communities.

.07

MAKE IT SOCIAL

Working toward a common goal can be a great way to bring your family together around quilting. Consider making a quilt to donate to a local charity or creating a family quilt that will be passed down through the generations. Finding a common purpose and goal can provide a sense of accomplishment and deepen family ties

Certainly, getting your family involved in quilting can be a fun and rewarding experience for everyone Don't force it, however, as unwilling participants are sure to bring everyone down

By choosing family-friendly projects, tailoring your projects to each family member's skill level, making it social, setting up a dedicated quilting space, attending quilting events, embracing technology, and finding a common purpose, you can create a productive and enjoyable family craft night. Remember, quilting is not just a hobby, it's an opportunity to create lasting memories with those you love.

SEWENDIPITOUS

Making Money With Your Quilting/Sewing Skills

Are you passionate about quilting, sewing, or other crafting activities? Do you spend hours creating beautiful pieces of fabric art in your spare time? If so, turning your skills into money-making activities may be the perfect way to earn some extra cash from your hobby or bloom into a full-blown business.

Let's discuss some tips on how to start making money with your quilting or sewing skills.

SEWENDIPITOUS

.01 START SMALL

If you ' re new to selling your creations, starting small is best. Make a few items, such as baby blankets or tote bags, to sell at a local craft fair or on Etsy This will give you a feel for what sells and what doesn't and help you build up a client base and a reputation for quality work

.02

KNOW YOUR WORTH

It's essential to price your items correctly so you ' re not losing money or undercharging for your time and effort. Research what similar items are selling for and factor in the cost of materials and the time it took to create them. Feel free to charge a fair price for your work, but also don't overprice and scare off potential customers

.03

OFFER CUSTOMIZATION

One of the benefits of handmade items is the ability to customize them to the customer's liking Consider offering customization options such as fabric choices, embroidery, or personalization This adds value to your item and sets you apart from the mass-produced items available in stores. Again, don't be afraid to price accordingly for your extra efforts.

SELL ONLINE

There are many online marketplaces where you can sell your handmade items, such as Etsy, Amazon Handmade, or even your own website Be sure to take high-quality photos of your items, write detailed descriptions, and keep your prices competitive Presentation is EVERYTHING!

Social media can also be a powerful tool for reaching customers and promoting your work. I dare say, if you want to move from hobby to a full business model you can't ignore it. Put yourself out there.

Most importantly, educate yourself about online marketing There are tons of useful blogs and videos out there to help you out Don't get caught up in the sales pitches that may accompany them These generally overpromise and underperform There is no magic bullet It takes time and persistence to grow your audience and get seen by the masses

COLLABORATE WITH OTHERS

Consider collaborating with other artists or crafters to create unique pieces or offer bundled items This provides an opportunity to learn from others and expands your customer base as you tap into their followers and fans, and vice versa

.06 TEACH CLASSES

If you ' re an expert in a particular skill or technique, consider offering classes or workshops to teach others You can do this in person or virtually and charge a fee for your time and expertise While it takes time, formally developing courses you can sell online can provide residual income for years to come

PARTICIPATE IN CRAFT SHOWS

Participating in craft shows and fairs is a great way to gain local exposure for your products and meet potential customers face-to-face Research local opportunities and ensure that your display is eye-catching and professionally presented. This can't be overstated! Offering a special deal or incentive for show attendees can also help draw customers in. Again, learning some marketing tips for whatever venue will be critical to their success.

Turning your quilting or sewing skills into a money-making activity requires a bit of effort and planning, but the rewards can be worth it Start small, price your items properly, and offer customization and collaboration opportunities Don't be afraid to promote your work online or through craft shows, and consider teaching classes to others With some persistence and creativity, you can turn your passion into a profitable venture

Lastly, from little things, large things grow. Put your fears and doubts aside, continue to educate yourself as you progress, and jump in. You'll learn more from just doing it. Your mistakes are valuable learning opportunities. Give yourself some grace and embrace the journey. It's your business You are the differentiator from the competition, so infuse your brand with the best parts of YOU!
