A Hidden Gem That’s A Must See A Closer Look at Malcom W. Martin Park

There are so many reasons to love living in the Metro East. And we’re about to add another one to the list.

There is a gem hiding near by that most people don’t know about. We’re talking about the Malcom W. Martin Park.

This park, located at 185 W Trendley Ave, in East St. Louis, IL, has a lot to boast about. It’s location, right on the edge of the Mississippi River, is the absolute best place to view the St. Louis Arch. The Overlook (left), a five-tiered, 40 feet rising walkway platform with lighted railings, brings parkgoers to the best vantage point for scenic views of the river and the beautiful St. Louis city skyline. It has quickly become an extremely popular spot for travelers to photograph the Gateway Arch. When you’re on top of the Overlook, don’t forget to turn around and wave. The Arch Cam livestreams this fantastic view 24 hours a day.

Another reason this park is so special is because it’s the home of the Gateway Geyser (right), the tallest water fountain in the United States and the third tallest in the world. This amazing fountain can reach 630 feet, matching the height of the Gateway Arch. There are also four smaller fountains around it to represent the four rivers that converge nearby: The Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois and Meramec. The fountain puts on a 10-minute show each day at noon, from Memorial day through Labor Day.

The park’s 34 acres of well-kept grassy areas also have benches, walking paths and clean restrooms. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic on a blanket or tossing a around a frisbee. There is also security guard’s office and several surveillance cameras for added safety. The park is owned and operated by the Metro East Park and Recreation District. It is open every day from 7am10pm.

The park was conceptualized by Malcom W. Martin, a St. Louis native born in 1912. After the Gateway Arch was completed in 1965, Martin wanted to complete Eero Saarinen’s (the designer of the Gateway Arch) original vision of having the Memorial Park extend to the Illinois side of the Mississippi River. The fountain’s first gush happened on May 27th, 1995, and on June 18th, 2005, the park was officially dedicated to Martin in honor of his hard work, dedication and generosity that made it possible. Today, there is a bronze statue of Martin (above) on top of the Overlook memorializing him and his great works. To learn more about the Malcom W. Martin park, go to theparkwithaview.com.
