Dear reader, To me, architecture is about empathy - once we learn to appreciate the space that we’re in, we learn to appreciate the people we’re with. I treat my portfolio like a diary. Don’t mind the excessive paragraphs and sharing of my feelings. Enjoy,

ARCH. DESIGN STUDIO V & VI | WINTER & SPRING 2021

As part of the Nevada Testing Site, Yucca

Flat was the host for over 900 bombs both under and on-ground. At the end, the largest crater ever made by men can be found: Sedan Crater. Over 300 feet deep and with a 1,150 diameter, Sedan is the site for the Area 10 Interpretation + Research Center. Area 10 will inform people of nuclear war and the consequences of it on humanity and nature through learning spaces that use sensorial experiences, exhibitions, viewing points, and interactive landscaping. The goal is for the visitor to leave with a deeper understanding of history, awareness of the importance of peace, and a sense of growth from this dark past.

In honor of Janice C. Beatley - an American

botanist who spent most of her time researching in the Nevada Testing Site - the facility is also a center for the practice of Atomic Gardening and the study of plants that can grow from the radioactivity of the land.

The Abode Tower focuses on providing a place where families can raise their children in a nature-enriched environment. The project encourages the residents to utilize community spaces to engage more with the natural landscapes that both the building and Hong Kong provide. I believe biophilia is an essential consideration when it comes to the design process. Research has proven that people that are raised in more natural surroundings tend to develop better self-esteem, mood, and both mental and physical health. The goal is to create a playful environment where children will grow up around nature and learn to be aware of the larger environment. Gaining the extra advantage of improving theirs and the other’s mental health. The building consists of 75 units in 6 different conf igurations throughout 28 floors, where the overall design responds to interacting with the natural elements available such as the waterf ront, sun, and weather conditions.

ABODE: BIOPHILIC TOWER

Hong Kong has many diverse attributes that contribute to a very rich and knowledgeable daily life experience – but it still lacks a deeper connection to nature and a sense of escape from this chaotic environment. With so much activity happening around the site, the project creates a reprieve from the “busyness and overwhelmingness” of the city, where families can focus on a more natural and healthy quality of life.

ARCH. DESIGN STUDIO IV | FALL 2020 It is not just applying to only human being’s benefit. Its essentiality in the Architecture field goes beyond to where in order to be able to take away from nature, we also need to give back to it – so, the design considerations should include strategies that are sustainable and not wasteful. Steel is the most sustainable material to be used for structure, being 98% recyclable. Since biophilia includes taking care of our natural resources and being more environmental friendly, the building’s structure consists mostly of steel. OPENING TO VIEWS + 7 DIFFERENT TOWERS

EARLY CHILDHOOD (AGES 3-7)

MIDDLE GRADE SCHOOL (AGES 7-12)

ADOLESCENCE (AGES 12-17)

The main objective of environmental education in an early age should be the development of empathy between the child and the natural world. Studies show that the best way to do so is with animal interactions and planting. Younger children need to understand how nature is a living thing that needs to be taken care of.

Exploring the nearby world and learning their place in it should be the primary objective for their bonding with nature. Allowing space for them to exercise their curiosity, following streams and pathways, and creating imaginary worlds should be the main focus for this age group in terms of environmental education.

Teenagers feel the need to change the world, but it’s best that they start working in a local level first. Teaching the younger children, and creating a better community environment are the main goal for this age group. They are encouraged to interact more their surroundings in a more active and social way.

ABODE: BIOPHILIC TOWER

There are 11 open pockets which include playgrounds, green roofs, gardening spaces, a dog park, and a soccer field. The spaces should be a playful invitation for both adults and children to learn from each other and learn how to interact with nature to create a better community environment. On the private aspect, each apartment is approximately 120 sqm with at least 20 sqm of balcony space, where residents can grow their own garden and gathering areas.

HONEY, I SHRUNK THE SAVANNAHIANS

TELLING A STORY In this class, we focused on the importance of telling a story in your drawings, our first project was to create a playful site analysis that told a narrative at the same time. The colors indicate the concentration of locals vs. tourists in the Savannah Squares.

HONEY, I SHRUNK THE SAVANNAHIANS! SECTION After a shrinking machine experiment goes wrong, Savannah is now inhabited by a society of humans of substantially smaller scale. Facing the challenge of building themselves a brandnew environment proportional to them, it ends up becoming a way to explore the quality of spaces in existing objects and to occupy the gaps on our everyday instruments.

When a young movie enthusiast finds a

broken 2709 Bell & Howell camera abandoned in an empty lot at Chippewa Square, he sees the opportunity to create the ultimate cinematic experience: making a movie theater that celebrates the multiple media, scales, and experiences that can be produced by the immersion that watching films can be. gatherings and movement of tourists vs locals

AGAPAE: BUNGALOW SPECTORIUM

a g a p[a]e a bungalow spectorium in Chicago, IL. Architectural Studio I was about human scale and behavior. Our final project was based off the 2019 Lyceum Competition, the brief was to make a bungalow for a milennial family on the south side of Chicago. Along with that, there was supposed to be the aspect of an Spectorium (a place to look and to be looked at).

036

My research about gazing ended up touching on the topic of window prostitution, and how both parties benefit from looking and being looked at, considering that the prostitute is looking for clients, and the ones looking are being entertained. With that, my concept models were about putting a vitrine in the very front of the property, so that the family would be exposed to the ones passing by. At the time, I didn’t still know to whom specifically my project was for. However, I did want to create a narrative, because i believe it makes the project more compelling and purposeful.

AGAPAE: BUNGALOW SPECTORIUM So I decided to make a house for a prostitute with two children. I created a character of a woman who struggled in the beginning of her life, but now she owns her profession and doesn’t see why it can’t be normalized. She has a cantilevered room in her house that it’s her workspace, she sees it as place to display herself, but also to be in control of who

she wants to pick to be her next client. However, she keeps her private life from her work, and has a more cozy and tight part in the back where her children’s bedroom is in the basement, and they are pushed away from the action because she still struggles with whether her son and daughter should know what she does for a living.

ARCH. DESIGN STUDIO II | WINTER 2020 Firstly, how to respect nature and the environment around us? Our site had a lot of trees, so i wanted to create something that didn’t intervened with them. And specially going back to Clark’s values, where he states that the human being should only intercept nature if it’s

absolutely necessary. That is why the placement is in the empty spaces in between the trees, and some of them are even used in the over to create an implicit gateway that establishes the connection of the man-made versus the environment around it.

Architecture can take over a lot of my time, and of course I love it - but how Elizabeth Diller once told me she would go to the Opera to relax for a bit - I need to do something to breathe for a second as well. So, here are some of my past projects, but also some of my drawings that I do to de-compress.

REPERTORY FOR ORAL HISTORY Redfern, Australia

According to Aristotles, a good narrative consists of 3 parts: pity, fear, and catharsis. I decided to turn the whole experience of my building and circulation into a narrative, where the building becomes the main character.

PITY:

This is the part of the narrative that you would connect with the character, hear about their background, and get familiarized with the story.

FEAR:

What can be consider the climax of the story, the circulation gets more enclosed and, as you know the character, you now start to feel for them, as well as feeling more compressed.

062

CATHARSIS:

The big release, you see the city, you feel free, just like the big finale of a narrative. There would be a small performance, and if not, just a place to hang out.

2017 - 2020 The aim of this project was to create a place that allowed non-written language communities to tell their stories. Apart from this, we had to fit our project into a little space with no sides very little opportunity to play with shape. But what you are left with, is a space in which you come in, and the sky is the limit. This project has wood tangents that puncture through the space and they take you exactly where you need to go, as you are not only listening to the narrative of the people, but you are also following the narrative of the building: pity, fear, and catharsis.

This is probably one of my favorite works from this project, I decided to have some fun with collaging, and explore the more unrealistic side of my building, and section. Just like the cloud with all the images are carried with narratives, that was the feeling of the path I wanted to give to my building. I went to a friend’s art gallery, and all of his projects were physical collages with magazines and fabrics, and it just left me very inspired to try it. Something about layering completely random images and getting your hands dirty leaves a very satisfying feeling.

120-HOUR 2019 The 120-hour is an international architecture students competition, in which the proposal is given on a Monday, and the participants have 5 days to come up with a concept that serves the purpose for each year’s theme. The 2019 proposal was to create a character that would be moving today to Svalbard, Norway. This island is doomed

066

due to climate change, and their community is slowly fading away because of the lack of resources and the natural disasters, there’s no point in living there. Our character, fictional or not, would have a reason to move there and settle. You had to put an illustration of the architectural settlement now, and how it would be in a hundred years from now.

2017 - 2020 As a sophomore, competitions become more experience than actually winning. This was a group project, so firstly, learning to collaborate and work with others - which believe me, it can be hard. Secondly, working with the limited amount of time, which will happen many times in my professional career, sets a tone of what I will have to deal with. Our project was based on a character from the 2017 movie First Reformed. He is an activist whose wife is pregnant and wants her to abort because he thinks a child should not be born in this condemned world. In our project, he chooses to have hope, and move to Svalbard, when he will start an environmental aware community that will grow and develop a whole society that believes in change.
