Virtual School Student Guide

1

Welcome Welcome back to the new term at Giggleswick. We hope that you have all had time to rest and refresh despite the restrictions of the lockdown. Most of all we hope that this finds you and your family well. This booklet is designed to outline all you need to know about the virtual school that is going to run during this term. Like the end of last term there will be remote lessons, but we have added all your normal Giggleswick school day to this, and taken away some of your preps! So you will have the opportunity to take part in clubs, sports, and enrichment programmes, as well as meet with your tutor, the wider school in weekly assemblies, and less formally with your housemates in the daily hangouts. As with all the normal on-campus learning that you are used to, we hope that you will embrace these opportunities to help support your learning and your welfare over the coming weeks.

Learner agreement The Virtual School Learner Agreement can be found here (in the Student Handbook/Virtual School) It is important that you are aware of the expected behaviours and working practices for the Virtual School.

3 International students All students living abroad are encouraged to join the live lessons. However where time difference prevents this, lessons will be recorded and there will be the same opportunity to contact your teachers for support. Even where there is a seven hour time difference it will be good for all pupils if you could still join the hangouts, assemblies, and clubs that take place during lunchtime BST.

Music/Speech & Drama lessons Music lessons and Speech and Drama lessons will be scheduled throughout the week, and students will absent themselves from academic lessons. This will be organised in the same manner that they were in the past, with a timetable distributed the week before. Lessons will start on Friday 1st May. Please speak directly to LMS if you are unable to practise your instrument at home.

Activities and Clubs There is an expectation for you to sign up to one activity slot per day, with two active ones per week. Please note that Year 11-13 must attend the lecture on a Monday, Year 10 set 1 must attend C4L on a Thursday, and Year 9 set 2 must attend C4L on a Friday. On Wednesday from 13:55 - 14:10 there will be a whole school assembly/chapel. You should check the channel of your chosen activity in advance, so you can be prepared e.g. Cookery and ingredients/Sports and possible equipment required. They are housed within the Activities, Clubs & Hangouts Team and each channel is where you will access the specific activity. There is a sign-up form in the Senior School Students Team. Please sign up early to avoid disappointment! Art challenges Inspired from materials found in the home, simple jewellery-making along with research of artists who lead in this area will be undertaken. Here students will look to improve their techniques to shape their work. Bodyweight training A programme to develop several components of fitness in all sport. There will be a focus on muscular development, endurance and power. All built up gradually over the 10-week programme. Choir Starting with warm up exercises and ending with every member recording their voice part and sending in an audio file. All music scores provided! Circuit training Here, a range of areas are worked upon in a challenging and well-paced tempo. These are exercises that can be transferred for all the family to take part in! Cooking Step into summer with our celebrity chef. A chance to participate and make a range of tasty treats, from spiced chickpea burgers to homemade guacamole through to afternoon tea. You can also watch and make it later in your own time. Cricket A series of sessions that can be done in isolation. Over 10 weeks you will test and develop your cricket technique and develop a range of practices to help in the future.

4 Debating (ALL Talk) Students can explore, discuss, and challenge ideas on a range of different topics. It is a studentled forum and new topics emerge each week. The first one is: ‘Covid-19 has brought the best out in people’. Drama monologues A chance to perform and critique your monologues with support and refinement offered by staff. Duke of Edinburgh/OP A chance to pick up where you left off with two separate clubs dependent upon age. A Year 10 and above slot for those planning to get ahead with DofE and one for younger year groups (Years 7 to 9) to focus more on the basic skills of map reading, etc. Flexibility Here you will see improvements in your flexibility over the course of the 10 weeks and develop your knowledge-base further in this key area. A stepped programme will see a movement from fundamentals to more advanced techniques. General Knowledge Quiz Three rounds each session with a potluck fourth round each week – all set to challenge quiz buffs. Gigg Busters A fitness challenge unique to Giggleswick. This activity allows you to complete over 50 exercises to win points. It will challenge your fitness on all levels. Hockey Here get ahead for September. The finer skills required will be developed in areas such as: passing, dribbling, shooting and positional skills. Weekly challenges are set in each session. House Challenge Here your efforts contribute to a house leader board and ultimately a house competition. Some activities here are completed outside of this time slot and submitted later. Model United Nations/MUN For those interested in current affairs and solving global problems. Each week a new problem is discussed, and you are given a country to represent. More suitable for Y10 and above. Netball Specific skills are given a workout each week, from passing, ball control through timed challenges set in every session. Photography Aimed at beginners in Y7,8 &9. This 4-week starter course aims to get you interested and develop further with a new topic each week. Oxygen A chance to continue the study of the Bible and discuss specific passages-bring your own tea and biscuits. A reminder this is at the usual weekly time of 8-15pm. Rugby Like other sports a chance to get ahead of your opponents and work on your key skills: such as passing and where possible kicking or tackling, as well as maintaining fitness. Speed and agility An opportunity to examine further the fundamentals which are paramount to all sports. Learn to improve your speed and become more agile.

Hangouts These are an opportunity for you to drop-in to a social environment during your lunch break. Look out for the hangout channel in the Activities, Clubs and Hangout Team or your House Team. They are not compulsory and you can join in for as long as you like, or arrange to meet people at specific times.

6 They will have a teacher present. The specific hangouts will be advertised to you throughout the week. Examples: House Common Rooms, School representative committees, Science Club

Chapel and Assembly There will be a school gathering every Wednesday during the Activity Slot. This will follow a similar pattern to the chapel services that you are used to in term time and, similarly, there will be houses presenting each week. The activities will follow after this event. This will give the whole school community the opportunity to come together and share key messages.

Credits Credits and negatives will be given out as usual • Tutors, teachers and parents will continue to see these and follow-up This is to support your learning and to give you praise and advice where appropriate.

Safeguarding and wellbeing We still have the same support structures to help you: • Tutors, Housemaster/mistress, teachers, chaplain, etc. Remember, you can also message Mr Simpson or Mrs Ladds via Teams or email at any time if you have any concerns or worries.

Logging in Recommended to “add school/college” account to your laptop. • If you have a windows computer, it will automatically download all the Office apps and make sure you have all the latest security updates. You can login to Office.com and download the apps yourself. Teams is available here - (or Google “Teams download”) It is worthwhile having the following apps on your phones: • OneNote • Teams • OneDrive • Lens • Flipgrid

Accessing a lesson Much like last term, your teacher may send you a calendar invite but will always teach the lesson in the general channel within the appropriate team. • To avoid concurrent meetings going on, let the teacher be the one who starts the meeting • If you are doing group work, you might need to put the general channel meeting on hold and join a new meeting in another channel in the team. Your teacher will give you instructions

7 • If you click on the calendar invite, it might go via your web browser. Just let it do that as it will end up opening the desktop app Some top tips for joining meetings: • Make sure your microphone and video are muted before you join • Use headphones if you can, particularly if you have multiple people in your family using Teams • If your internet is struggling, you can disable incoming video

Assignments All prep will be submitted through assignments. You have been using assignments all year so you should be used to clicking the complete button. To turn in an assignment, select its assignment card. Depending on the status of your assignment, you may be turning your work in on time, late, or submitting revised work after it’s been returned to you. Navigate to the General channel in the desired classroom, then select Assignments. You can also use your search bar to search for an assignment by keyword. If your teacher specified a document for you to turn in, or you have other files to attach to this assignment, select +Add work and upload your file. It’s possible to work on Office files right from this screen – no need to leave the app. Your teacher might have already given you a template. This will already be in My Work. Again, it’s possible to work directly in the app.

8 OneNote Opening in App makes using OneNote much nicer - you only need to do this once.

If your teacher has assigned a piece of work with a OneNote document to hand in: You can hand in through either OneNote or Teams (but don’t create a new page in OneNote, there will be one already in Homework). It is super quick to take photos of work and upload them to a OneNote if you have the app on your phone.
