Giggleswick 1512 Society The 1512 Society was established to acknowledge and thank those who have pledged a gift to the school or are considering leaving a legacy in their Will. We host special events through the year to keep members in touch and up to date with developments at Giggleswick.

Our vision to be the first choice co-educational boarding school in the North means we are committed to investing in a comprehensive capital programme, improving our boarding house facilities, rebuilding our music school and refurbishing our teaching spaces to provide an exceptional learning environment to support the development of our young people.

Looking back over the last five hundred years, it is clear that Giggleswick would not be where it is today without the generosity of major philanthropists. We invite you to support our legacy programme and become a part of our story.

Looking ahead Our strategic priorities

Giggleswick is committed to providing an exceptional learning environment to support the development of our young people. We are developing plans to invest in our learning facilities and in particular to support those areas which are so central to Giggleswick life, such as the Music School.

Refurbishment and reordering of our teaching spaces will provide a learning environment which is fit for today’s learner, recognising developments in teaching and technology, and providing something unique in a special setting.

Boarding is changing, and we recognise that we need to keep evolving our model of boarding to provide the best facilities for our pupils.

We are undertaking a rolling programme of investment across all our boys’ and girls’ boarding houses, starting with shaping a new approach to boarding across Nowell, Paley and Shute which will enhance communal facilities, redefine the sleeping accommodation and create a ‘home from home’ in those three houses. A new, mixed gender, Upper Sixth house is planned for Morrison and this will provide an environment for our young people to transition to adult life.

Bursary Fund

We recognise the considerable investment that many parents make in a Giggleswick education for their children; we also recognise that the cost of independent education can increasingly prevent access to our school from all areas of our society. Giggleswick already provides more than £1 million of bursarial assistance every year and it is central to our charitable purpose to provide ongoing access to a Giggleswick education. Our ambition is establish a long term access fund that will provide financial assistance for any pupil who would like to attend Giggleswick.

Building partnerships with key regional stakeholders for mutual benefit Giggleswick is an important brand in Yorkshire and the North of England, and we understand that our success is linked to the success of the region. We actively look to reach out to and work with key regional partners and build mutually beneficial links and ties.

Giggleswick continues to make an important contribution and partnership working is central to this, whether this is with other schools, universities or local employers.

Extending the commercial opportunities of the school to maximise the educational benefits of our extensive campus Giggleswick already has a strong track record for providing outof-term access for children and adults to use and experience outstanding facilities in our unique location in the Yorkshire Dales. Our ambition is to open up the range and accessibility of these activities to new communities and groups, allowing more people than ever to experience Giggleswick.

This will include focusing our activities in three areas: Giggleswick Active, Giggleswick Learning and Giggleswick Events. The further expansion of our summer school, adult courses, away days, events and leisure facilities all form part of the new growth in this area.

Create a global brand that develops responsible world citizens for all our pupils

Giggleswick has the potential to be a global brand, recognising the unique values that underpin our approach to education.

Our strong market presence in strategic international centres means that we are able to attract a strong cohort of young people from overseas to benefit from a Giggleswick education.

We now want to expand our global reach beyond the physical constraints of our campus in North Yorkshire, and plan to open a number of schools in various locations around the world. These schools will share our name and our ethos, and will enable opportunities for more young people to experience a Giggleswick education.

The David Houston Learning Hub is the result of my husband’s decision to provide Giggleswick with a legacy in his Will.

David wanted to give something back to the school which he attended in the late 1950s, where he made full use of all the sporting facilities, and which gave him the grounding to develop his long career in banking.

David did not specify how he wanted the legacy to be used, however I discussed the outline of some ideas with the Headmaster and I have been touched by the care and sensitivity shown by the school in helping me through a very difficult time.

I am delighted that the Houston Cup for Sporting Contribution was presented for the first time at Speech Day in 2017 and was overwhelmed to be asked to open the Hub.

There is a lasting link for me personally with Giggleswick and I now feel part of the school. Seeing the result of David’s bequest has had such a positive effect on me and the impact of a legacy left to Giggleswick is there for all to see.
