President’s Address Richard Warburton, 1972-77 In 1548 (Edward VI) Richard Carr was maintained as Giggleswick’s schoolmaster for the princely sum of £5 6s 8d for I quote “the good education of the abbondaunt yought in those rewde parties”. In 1972, some 424 years later, I came to Gigg fulfilling the last part of this quotation to a tee.

It didn’t take me long to venture into trouble and on my very first day, John Dean (Housemaster of Morrison) was not too keen on my use of dialect in the house and suggested I refrain from such talk and convert to the Queen's English immediately! On the very same day however, I redeemed myself during second period. Mr

Warwick Brookes asked the class for the English King of 1066 and as predicted the usual and perhaps more common answers were given by my fellow classmates. I however, waved my hand enthusiastically and was asked why my hand was up as the correct name had been given. “No sir” I said “King David of Scotland ruled where I live during that time too!” This was initially dismissed as wrong, but to Warwick Brookes great credit two days later he tracked me down and exclaimed to my sheer delight that I was in fact bob on.

From the moment I arrived at Giggleswick, Morrison House became my home. As one of the more rural houses, we soon bonded with our fellow Morrison members and became a competitive team, successfully defending our Scarrig dominance every year until we left. John Dean, the school's Head of English however was more focused on winning the annual speaking competition, and to his dismay we failed every time!

I look forward to working with all OGs and the Headmaster to promote the OG Club and support the future vision of the School.

The school has returned for another academic year buoyed by some fantastic results over the summer and some impressive new facilities in Nowell and the Fitness Suite.

The news contained within these pages reminds us, from whatever generation we hail, that, whilst the faces and physical fabric may change, Giggleswick remains at heart a values driven school.

Those currently enjoying life within the school will no doubt be able to tell you that the three core values of respect, participation and ambition capture much of what goes on today. A healthy respect for one another and ourselves, a willingness to positively embrace opportunities to take part, from which the confidence is gained to develop real personal ambition. These are all aptly illustrated in this edition through the lives of OGs, and I hope also that you will be interested in some of the ambition we have for the future development of the school.

A Level stars are shining at Giggleswick We are celebrating yet another 100% A level pass rate plus an impressive 38% increase in A*A grades. There had been from experts that the warnings percentage of top grades could drop this year due to A level reforms, but our pupils defied all national predictions and increased their percentage of A*A grades up to 36% this year.

We have enjoyed a long tradition of excellence in Performing Arts and this year's A level results show that Drama and Music are flourishing, with all students achieving 100% A*-B grades in Theatre Studies and in Music, too.

Welcome Leavers 2018 Leavers celebrating their achievements and becoming OG's

very year group leaves its own mark upon the school. This year’s leavers have made particularly strong impressions in the cocurriculum, where interests have stretched across an incredible range of activities and as far as other continents.

Our upper sixth form pupils celebrated the end of an era as they joined friends, family and staff for a glittering Leavers’ Ball on Friday. The black tie evening was a glamorous occasion with everyone looking their most stylish and sharing happy memories of their time at school.

Over 150 guests enjoyed a delicious three course dinner with entertainment provided by magician Paul Roberts, and dancing to ‘The Black Suits’.

Mr Bellis, who gave the toast to the leavers, urged the new ‘Old Giggleswickians’ to continue to grow, accept challenges in life, and make a difference to the lives of others. He also took the opportunity to remember the the OGs of 1918 who did not come home. Speeches were also given by the Heads of School, who celebrated their successes as a year group and also reflected on the lifelong lessons that will stay with them as they move on.

We wish them the best of luck for the future and look forward to welcoming them back as Old Giggleswickians.

Chris Barritt returns to London’s Old Vic

After a National tour of ‘The History Boys’, and ‘The Caretaker’ at London’s Old Vic, Chris (St, 70) returns to the theatre once again.

A revival of Stephen Daldry's production of ‘An Inspector Calls’, which will go on a 4-week tour of the UK through York, Wimbledon, Cheltenham and Cambridge before embarking on a 4-month tour of USA, taking in Washington, Los Angeles, Chicago and Boston.

Chris (S, 78), along with two other riders, travelled to New Zealand in January 2018 to cycle over 1500 miles from the very North of the North Island at Cape Reinga to the southern most tip of the south Island at Bluff. They completed the ride in 19 days with an average of 85 miles per day. This physically and mentally demanding challenge raised funds and awareness for two charities, Parkinson’s UK and local workshop Claro Enterprises. Chris also managed to meet up with OG Julian Meadow (St, 82) near Wellington along the way!

John Flint named new HSBC Chief Executive John Flint (M, 86) has been named the new Chief Executive of HSBC. Mr Flint is an HSBC veteran and joined the lender as an international officer in 1989. He spent the first 14 years of his career in Asia, helping to establish and expand the bank’s global markets business in the region before moving back to London in 2004.

Victoria wins Grand Jury Prize In June, Victoria Ferran’s (C, 07) BBC Radio 4 arts feature, The Man Who Buries Planes, won the Grand Jury Prize for audio at the Telling Tales International Documentary Festival in Manchester. Congratulations Victoria!

was appointed group treasurer and assumed global responsibility for balance sheet management, before adding the roles of Deputy Head of Global Markets and Head of Global Markets for Europe, Middle East and Africa to his CV. He has also worked as Chief of Staff to the Group Chief Executive at HSBC and Group Head of Strategy.

On a wet and windy day in June Chris (C, 63) walked across Morecambe Bay in what is known as ‘The Bay Walk’, raising £470 for the OG Lodge Charity Fund. A remarkable reunion of friends Sometime in March I received an email from the granddaughter of Mrs Sumner, who 60 years ago worked at Giggleswick in the kitchens, asking is she could bring her grandmother back to the School of which she back to the School about which she often talked. On a May morning Christine Elizabeth Sumner and family arrived and the day turned out to be a remarkable one for several reasons.

assistant and this is when the story of the reunion really surprises, for the assistant was none other than the daughter of the Pauline, who all those years ago, had been Chrissie’s best friend. After lunch Chrissie and Pauline were reunited and I was not the only observer to be visibly moved. Two elderly ladies who had not seen each other for 60 years were face to face. I for one drove home smiling all the way!

Chrissie (Mrs Sumner), left Ireland at 15, a young country girl on her own who journeyed by boat and by train to Giggleswick. Her days at work were long: 6 am until 8pm, preparing and serving meals to the pupils. Chrissie was not allowed to speak to the boys and indeed had to bow her head if a master passed by. This now seems like something from a Dickens’s novel, but was in fact the 1950s. They had one day a week free when she would go for country walks with her friend, Pauline, whom she met at Catteral Hall. Her wages were £6 a month, four of which she sent home to her mother.

John Twisleton on Settle’s Tom Twisleton Centenary

Canon John Twisleton (S, 66) worked with Settle Stories on the centenary celebration for Craven dialect poet Tom Twisleton (1845-1917), held on 21 November in Settle. The Heritage Lottery Fund has invested in the young people of Settle and its surrounding area to promote their creative writing skills. John wrote his own poem ‘Ode to Tom’ on truth-telling to honour his forbear which features in Settle Stories commemorative booklet.

British Trans-Americas Expedition 2017 concludes on Alaskan coast Nicholas Foulerton (P, 94) along with five other members of the British Armed Forces have completed an epic 77-day, 23,000-mile motorcycle expedition from Ushuaia on the southern tip of South America to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, traversing the Pan-American Highway, the longest unsupported British military overland expedition for 45 years.

The journey saw the Royal Navy and British Army servicemen riding cross-country trail motorcycles through 13 countries, negotiating vast changes in terrain from the tropical jungles and mountains of South and Central America, through the heat and deserts of North America and on through the cold and snowy wilds of Alaska.

e have started a multi-million pound investment in our boarding houses and classroom facilities, with the first stage of development now completed.

The redevelopment project will see an overhaul of the boarding houses to create the latest in modern, architecturally designed, home from home accommodation for our pupils.

The project aims to bring a new leading-edge model of family-friendly boarding to Giggleswick and to its sector with open-plan living, kitchen, social and study areas for everyone. Brand new accommodation will be available for all.

Work started over the summer holidays with the refurbishment of Nowell House. The programme will continue to the other boarding houses in subsequent years. Each house will be transformed with new light, modern living spaces on the inside whilst retaining the architectural heritage of the building externally.

Said Mark Turnbull: “Boarding is central to life and learning at Giggleswick and our new facilities are a statement of the ambition for the school.

Boarding must adapt to modern demands and we have reviewed our provision to ensure the highest standards of facilities that provides the best family-friendly experience for the children.”

Also in the planning is a dedicated new-build Upper Sixth Form House, designed to provide bespoke facilities for more independent living and working, preparing each student for life beyond Giggleswick.

Mr Turnbull added: “It is an exciting time for the School and as well as investing in our facilities we are committed to making Giggleswick accessible and affordable for as many young people as we can. Our broad, values-based education focused upon the needs of each individual is more important today than it has ever been. What these developments show is what sets Giggleswick apart: we endeavour to put the needs and happiness of each child at the heart of what we do, so that boarding, just like all learning, can be great fun.”

Speech Day 2018 900 guests packed the Sports Hall for this year’s Speech Day to celebrate the ‘Joy in Learning’ at Giggleswick, with another year of successes hard won by our pupils and carefully supported by their teachers.

The Headmaster and Chair of Governors, Heather Hancock went on to explain how the School continues to look forward with confidence with some exciting new developments already in progress to ensure that our teaching and pastoral facilities are fit for the pupils in the 21st century, as we enter what some are now calling the fourth education revolution.

Guests were invited to view the plans and the ‘show room’ for the first phase in a multi-million pound redevelopment of our boarding facilities, which pupils will start to enjoy from September 2018. A new gym now completed, and a dance studio, will be resources for the whole community.

Wendy & Peter Pan – Flying high at the RWT The Richard Whiteley Theatre was a sell-out for four performances of Wendy and Peter Pan, a radical retelling of JM Barrie’s classic tale.

What stood out for the local newspaper’s critic, the Craven Herald's, Gill O’Donnell, was the team effort evident in staging Wendy and Peter.

She wrote: “It was certainly on a par with, and in many respects better than, many professional productions in terms of staging and direction. The level of acting was such that the audience happily suspended disbelief and were carried along with the action.”

A level, GCSE and Key Stage Three students took roles in Ella Hickson’s play which was originally commissioned for the RSC. This contemporised version put Wendy at the forefront, offering an occasionally dark, often moving and consistently entertaining take on the well-known children’s story.

Prizes were presented this year by James Ketchell, the first and only person to have rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, successfully climbed Mount Everest and cycled 18,000 miles around the world. He

spoke about his journey from his hospital bed following a disastrous motorcycle accident to his ‘Ultimate Triathlon’ over the following seven years. His inspiring story was a lesson to everyone not just about conquering adversity but also about how important it is to continue to enjoy learning in life.

Heads of School, Emma Crossley-Smith and Miles Taylor provided the perfect end to the proceedings with a clear and heartfelt message for all pupils to embrace and enjoy every opportunity that Giggleswick provides.

Cracking codes with the real Enigma James Grime, formally of the University of Cambridge Millennium Mathematics Project, took pupils and staff on a mathematical adventure through the history of codebreaking from Caesar ciphers to RSA internet encryption. James, who brought along a fully functional World War Two Enigma machine, spoke passionately about the impact mathematics has had on the history of politics and warfare.

Pupils from Years 7 to 10 attended a lecture in the morning followed by workshops through the day where they learned how to break codes and ciphers. Students in Years 11 to U6, and many staff attended an advanced lecture in the evening where

Giggleswick shows the science for GCSE success

Young Musician of the Year Singer Wil Richmond and saxophonist Maddison Goode were joint overall winners of Giggleswick School’s Young Musician of the Year competition, earlier this year.

Year 9 pupil, Emma Belshaw, was named the Key Stage Three champion.

A wealth of musical talent from across the age groups was showcased in the annual event, which involves pupils at all levels competing in classes to gain recognition for their hard work and musical prowess.

Old Giggleswickian and professional soprano Sarah Fox, who now sings all over the world, was the adjudicator. She took time to give individual feedback to all pupils, offering constructive criticism and praise.

Our pupils have exceeded national expectations by achieving top grade results and an impressive 94% overall pass rate this year, despite concerns over the new, tougher, numerically graded GCSEs.

More than 42% of candidates achieved A*A equivalent (7-9) grades, compared with a 20.5% national average, and the overall A*-C equivalent pass rate increased to 94%, compared with a 66.9% national figure.

Our scientists have been top performers again this year with an impressive 87% achieving grades 7-9 in chemistry, 81% in physics, and all science subjects recording a 100% pass rate. There was more success in

Musical success for George Guitarist, George Collins, is tuned to success after his triumph in a string of musical contests.

George strummed his way to first prize in a prestigious regional music competition, just weeks after being awarded an international scholarship and also coming fourth in a global guitar contest.

George, who has just finished his lower sixth year, came first in the Pendle Young Musicians Bursary competition at Colne Municipal theatre, where he was the youngest of four finalists. He has won a share in a prize fund

Battlefields “As the centenary of the end of the First World War looms later this year, Year 9 pupils visited the Western Front. The 22 pupils went to cemeteries and memorials, a preserved battlefield, reconstructed trenches and a huge bomb crater during

Students completed various tasks to help them understand the significance of the sites they visited. As well as looking at sources, timelines and exam questions, they carried out other investigations, including comparing different trenches on the Western Front, discussing tactics, looking carefully at inscriptions on mass graves and examining the differences in information on "known" and "unknown" graves.”

Schola to perform at Westminster Abbey

Schola has passed the vigorous test to be accepted as a visiting choir at Westminster Abbey next year. The choir received excellent references and has been building an outstanding reputation through its hugely successful cathedral visits over the last few years. Margie Simper, Director of Music said: “This is a huge honour and a testament to the amazing sound of Schola, and to the choir's professionalism.”

The date for their performance is Sunday 4 August 2019 – an occasion not to be

missed! Westminster Abbey is one of the UK’s most popular visitor attractions, which has hosted the coronation of the nation’s Kings and Queens since 1066.

Its world-famous choir sings at eight services each week during the choir term. Visiting choirs sing choral services out of term.

Normally, visiting choirs are given the opportunity to sing one service on a week day but Schola has been offered a Sunday, which means they will perform at three services.

Tom Coxon: New Young Governor Paley 2009 Disney set designer Tom Coxon is our latest addition to the governing body, in the role of ‘Young Governor’ he school governors reserve a place every year for a recent OG, typically less than 10 years out from leaving school. Since leaving Giggleswick, Tom graduated in architecture from Central Saint Martins in 2013, subsequently gained an MA in production design from the National Film and Television School and has worked for the BBC on hit programmes including McMafia, before landing his current role with Disney.

Tom said: “Being a young governor gives me the opportunity to give something back to a school which has given me so much in my life’s journey. It gave me such a strong platform and allowed me to explore who I am as a person through both academic and extracurricular activities. The ethos and enthusiasm of Giggleswick helped me believe that I could achieve more than I thought I could.”

Tom’s journey to Disney could almost be a film script in itself. He has overcome difficulties which many people would consider to be problems with typical positivity, tenacity and passion, seeing things as opportunities rather than setbacks.

While in year three, Tom, who is now 28, was diagnosed with dyslexia.

He said: “My visual and special strengths surpassed my writing and reading skills. For me this never felt like a problem or weakness, as I have always been drawn to the visual side of things anyway. Starting to read a book I would quickly find myself staring endlessly into the illustrations imagining my own narratives for the story. It was never an excuse and it just meant I had to try harder to keep up with everyone else. Achieving an A and B in my English GCSEs is still something I’m proud of today.

“Now it’s my job to take the words of a script and visualise what that world or environment would look like, so I’m using what was once my ‘weakness’ to define me as a creative designer. I read the words, allow my mind to wander and start to draw. The illustrations become sets and those those once, to me, dry words are created into reality.”

Just before starting his MA, Tom suffered a stroke as a result of complications from a routine operation, losing most of his mobility on his left side. Sheer will and determination saw him through difficult times with relentless rounds of physiotherapy until he regained his movement.

“This set back didn’t stop me from completing my Masters in the allotted time – I passed with the grade ‘excellent’ – and I have gone on to play hockey and waterpolo at a competitive level. As a life event, the stroke was truly humbling and life changing, but it allowed me to prove to myself that I am tenacious, determined and passionate.”

As well as being a familiar face in the art room and design department, Tom was a founder of the ‘With Wings’ theatre company, formed by a group of aspiring pupils during their upper sixth year and which still exists today. With Wings went on to be chosen to present a production based on the play ‘Sad Since Tuesday’ at the National Student Drama Festival. The young thespians were up against tough competition from experienced university companies to win this opportunity.

The seeds of set design therefore sown at Giggleswick, Tom enjoyed a variety of work alongside his undergraduate studies, including exhibiting at the Victoria and Albert Museum and fulfilling commissions for interaction and multimedia installations for the National Trust and the 2012 Cultural Olympic Committee. His years at Central Saint Martins included his election as the college president for two years where he represented more than 4,000 students and oversaw the major reconfiguration of the main campus university condensed from five sites into one. This was also the time of the Kings Cross regeneration project and Tom was involved as college president, on a committee responsible for factoring in the community and culture as part of the urban planning process.

Prior to graduating he was snapped up by architecture studio Stanton Williams and eventually a stint at the National Theatre. He won a Sunday Times award for Spirit In Innovation which led him to apply for his Master's degree.

He said: “Giggleswick is in a development stage with potential changes in its architecture, structure and ambition for the future. I hope my architectural background and experience will add significant value as the governors consider how the new physical spaces need to be developed.

These are exciting times and I have a strong desire to give back to the school which has given me so much.”

Investment in boarding Boarding is changing, and we recognise that we need to keep evolving our model of boarding to provide the best facilities for our pupils. We are undertaking a rolling programme of investment across our boarding houses, starting with shaping a new approach to boarding in Nowell, Paley and Shute which will enhance communal facilities, redefine the sleeping accommodation and create a ‘home from home’ in those three houses. A new, mixed gender, Upper Sixth house is planned for Morrison and this will provide an environment for our young people in their transition to adult life. Bursary Fund We recognise the considerable investment that many parents make in a Giggleswick education for their children; we also recognise that the cost of independent education can increasingly prevent access to our school from all areas of our society. Giggleswick already provides more than £1 million of bursarial assistance every year and it is central to our charitable purpose to provide ongoing access to a Giggleswick education. This satisfies my interests in history, architecture, and music, especially the ecclesiastical kind, which was one of the best things about Giggleswick in my day. (It was run by Dr Smith, D Mus Oxon, FRCO, who was housemaster of Paley and an inspiring choir master and organist.)”

Hearing from OGs in the not for profit sector Professor Stefan AlleschTaylor CBE (N, 87)

Prolific philanthropist Professor Stefan Allesch-Taylor CBE has been making headlines in 2018 for his game-changing approach to advancing social progress.

He's most recently been in the news for funding a 5 year study into the neuroscience of the business brain at the Kings College Entrepreneurship Institute.

Through his charities he has actively affected entrepreneurship-led change in Africa for over 10 years. The Afri-CAN Children's Charity, of which he is Founder and Chairman, provides education and nutrition to over 3,500 underprivileged children in the townships of Cape Town in over 52 Early Childhood Development Centres. He also serves as Chairman of the charity Pump Aid, which has provided over 1.3 million vulnerable people in Malawi with clean water. Pump Aid won Charity of the Year 2017 UK Charity Awards for its innovative entrepreneurial approach to relieving water poverty in Malawi. He is also Founder and Deputy Chairman of the Central London Rough Sleepers Committee, providing support for London's homeless.

Financier, company chairman, broadcaster and entrepreneur, AlleschTaylor’s philanthropic focus also extends to his academic life. He is the first Professor in Practice ever appointed at King's College London and presides over the annual Allesch-Taylor Scholarships for the best Start-Ups at Kings20. In the Arts he is a multi-award winning film producer and has launched a £1m grant fund for new filmmakers specialising in Short Films.

John Golding (St, 56) Jennie Cashman-Wilson (C, 99) Jennie is the Founder & CEO of the Abram Wilson Foundation and a founding trustee of the Durham Music Trust, which supports the delivery of music education in county Durham and Darlington for 10,000 children and young people every week.

Jennie began working with the critically acclaimed award-winning jazz musician, Abram Wilson in 2009. After Abram passed away in 2012, Jennie established the Abram Wilson Foundation for Creative arts, which aims to help young people become the greatest version of themselves through the performing arts and in particular the art of music.

Since 2012 Jennie has raised nearly £300,000 for the Abram Wilson Foundation, and reached over 5,000 individual secondary school students based in deprived areas of London and Birmingham. In October 2017 Jennie was listed in WISE100, the first ever index to recognise inspiring and influential women in social enterprise, impact investment and social innovation.

GIGG:NEWS OG Feature Andrew Scott (P, 94) “After spending almost 10 years living across Europe, I returned to the UK in 2009 and qualified as an accountant. I spent a few years working for FTSE100 companies, but I decided that I really wanted to get involved with an organisation that made a positive difference to the society that I live in. As it was, I was fortunate enough to be looking for a new role, when a Finance Business Partner position was advertised at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-Upon-Avon.

“I am a member on the Yorkshire Committee of The ABF Soldiers Charity, which supports soldiers and veterans from the British Army, and their immediate families, when they are in need. Over the years with my wife Liz, we have put in a lot of effort and raised substantial amounts of money through family days, antique book fairs and black tie dinners. It is humbling to see the generosity of people when they hear what trauma fellow soldiers have been through in order to protect us.”

There is no such thing as a typical day in my role: one morning can be spent helping a director build a project budget, followed by an afternoon meeting discussing how to make hiring meeting rooms in our buildings and theatres more accessible; but working alongside passionate and creative people, who are among the best in the world at what they do, is energising and being a part of an organisation that delivers world-class theatre, makes coming into work in the morning a real pleasure. The Royal Shakespeare Company is making a real difference to people’s lives, as well as putting on incredibly entertaining and thought-provoking shows, almost every night of the week. James Nisbet (M, 88)

James is serving with the Royal Navy as a Commander following an 18-year finance career in the City of London. For the past 2 years he has been seconded to the Marine Society & Sea Cadets which is the largest maritime youth charity in the country. The Marine Society established in 1756 as the first UK charity for seafarers and in 2004 merged with the Sea Cadet Corps. The MSSC works closely with the Royal Navy to provide 14,000 cadets from the ages of 10 - 18 with fun, sea-based training.

As the London Area Officer, James is responsible for 47 Sea Cadet units including 1500 cadets and 900 adult volunteers. Based in HMS President in the

Cadets are supported by the charity with bursaries to encourage them to take advantage of a wide variety of activities including international exchanges across the world. James is also a Trustee of the Sea Change Sailing Trust, which is a charity set up to offer children with learning difficulties the chance to go sailing on a Thames Sailing Barge.

Robbie Davidson wins Latvian Rugby Player of the Year Congratulations to OG Robbie Davidson (S, 2013), who won this year's Latvian Rugby Player of the Year!

Robbie has enjoyed a prolific international season and has now moved to third on the all-time list of Latvian top points scorers. Through his family (his dad in particular), a real link has developed between the club and the Latvian team, which has seen players arrive from the Baltic state to develop their rugby education and seen players go in the other direction to develop their coaching... and social education!

Long may it continue!

This year’s Scarrig took place on a bright and cold day, under beautiful blue skies, with lovely views over the local countryside.

In the Senior Girls event Eve Hutchinson broke her own record by 3 seconds in a time of 14:50. The Senior Boys race was particularly exciting with lots of changes in the top four places during the second part of the race.

Charles Smith who had been leading the first lap by some way, before sustaining a recurrence of an old injury, was reeled in by Tom Humphries. However, by the time the boys came to the road crossing for the final time Michael Wright and Michael O’Shea had joined Tom. Michael O’Shea made a break in the final 600m to pull away from the other two to claim victory.

‘That was an extraordinary performance, truly remarkable’, the words of Richard Ollerenshaw, team owner of Hillspeed Racing.

He was talking about Sasakorn ‘Cutter’ Chaimongkol (M, 2018) at the completion of a two-day test in a British Formula 3 car at Anglesey Circuit in Wales.

The participation in the recent Buriram Formula 4 event, his debut in the series, clearly helped his preparation for this very important test session although it was a huge leap from the F4 car to the Cosworth powered Tatuus and the very competitive British F3 series.

‘The last two days have been fantastic, tiring but very exciting. I am so pleased to have recorded lap times which are competitive and put me in with a real chance of making a mark in this very demanding series,’ said

Euan Brennan’s running success has continued in recent weeks with impressive runs for both England U18s and Great Britain U20s Mountain Running teams.

Euan (L6) represented England in the International Mountain Running Youth Cup in Lanzada, Italy, where he finished second with a time of 20:34, 24 seconds behind the winner. The team took gold with a near perfect score.

Following on from his second-place finish in Italy, Euan travelled to Skopje, Macedonia, with the Great Britain squad for the European Mountain Running Championships.

Euan was one of four GB runners competing in the race and went on to finish as the second-placed GB runner. In his first race at this level, Euan finished in sixth place, competing against the best U20 Mountain Runners in Europe. The GB team also won team gold, adding to his growing collection of medals.

1st XI Cricketers fly the Yorkshire flag in Somerset

Our 1st XI cricketers finished their season with a return trip to Somerset to take part in a festival with Christ’s Hospital School, King’s School Bruton and St Albans School.

This is the second year we have competed in the festival, which gives our players the chance to play against different opposition in different settings and play a different format of cricket.

Over the course of three games our boys

recorded a seven-wicket win against King’s School Bruton, lost by two wickets to Christ Hospital and narrowly lost in the last over of the game to St Albans, who had three Middlesex Academy players.

Ryan Hodgson (L6) was voted Player of the Festival by opposition coaches after taking a five-wicket wicket haul and scoring 90 runs against Christ Hospital, hitting 84 not out against St Albans and 68 not out against King’s School Bruton.

School Golf Challenge

This year there was some excellent scoring at the annual Old Giggleswick Golf fixture against the School. Two players from each team scored over 30 points with special mention going to pupils Ben Capstick (36) and Archie Alton (31). In a close contest the OG team prevailed by a narrow margin.

OGs were also playing for the Wolstenholme Cup which this year was won by Brook Coward (M, 14) with a score of 36 points. Brook played the last 17 holes in 2 over par.

Congratulations to Tom Humphries (L6) who was victorious in the Junior English Fell Running Championships in Derbyshire.

The six race series attracts the best U19 Fell Runners in the country to compete against each other, with their 4 best results counting for their overall score.

Tom went into the final race leading the field and needing to finish higher than the runner in second place to claim the title.

After a strong run in very warm conditions, Tom finished third, ahead of his nearest rival to claim his well-earned series victory.

Record Breaking Sports Day Perfect conditions clearly brought out the best in our pupils on Sports Day this year with an impressive four records broken in the boys’ and girls’ events. Passion, pride, skill and steely determination won the day alongside a true spirit of participation and teamwork across the Houses and year groups.

Leticia secures gold

In October 2017 Madrid OG Leticia Riva Gil (C, 14) secured gold in the Spanish Championships for Young Riders for the second year in a row.

This is quite an accomplishment and even more so given that Leticia was the only rider in the competition to complete faultless rounds over the three day competition. This is the last year that the 21 year old can compete in the Young Riders’ events but we are sure that she will continue to shine in coming years in the adult events. Enhorabuena Leti!

Nicola Ehlinger Style 2005-2011 Food & Beverage Manager at Hilton Hotels After leaving Giggleswick School in 2011, Nicola went on to study French with Business at Hull University.

Chris Moxon Shute 1999-2004 Aerospace Engineer at Rolls-Royce Chris read Aerospace Engineering at the University of Manchester, which allowed him to be appointed as an Aerospace Engineer on the Graduate Programme at Rolls-Royce in Civil Aerospace Gas Turbine Division. Whilst working at Rolls-Royce, Chris has enjoyed a wealth of opportunities which have allowed him to work in Singapore for 9 months and frequently travel to Germany, France and the USA.

now holds an Engineering Management position, and runs the Flight Test programme for the Trent 1000 and 7000 engines. In his current role he leads a team of 30 engineers and integrates the engines with the Airframe in order to deliver flight test experiments. This offers significant technical, leadership and delivery challenges in engineering but also a breadth of commercial, supply chain and customer activity.

During his time at Rolls-Royce, Chris has had various roles across the group developing Technology and designing their Trent series of Gas Turbine Engines. He has also worked in Defence and the Small Engine Division, which produces engines that power private business jets. Chris

Harriet Belk Style 2010-2012 Design Technician for LIMA After leaving Giggleswick with an unconditional offer at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA), Harriet received a Certificate of Higher Education in Theatre and Performance Design presented to her by Sir Paul McCartney, before deciding to change her career path from performing arts to construction.

Harriet then worked at three different jobs before going travelling for six months, visiting Dubai,

Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and Africa. Following this she received an offer at Loughborough University to study Architecture Engineering and Design Management, where she was accepted onto the Laing O’Rourke Scholarship Programme, including two summer placements working as an Assistant Design Manager.

Since graduating in July 2015, she has been completing a Management Development Programme for Hilton Hotels. Nicola chose to work for Hilton because she had read so many testimonies about the career development and training that it provides for its employees, as well as the opportunity to work at some of the 4000 hotels across the world. After an 18-month graduate development programme for Hilton in London and Dublin, she now manages the Food & Beverage department in a hotel in central London.

The possibilities are endless, so my golden words of wisdom are: work hard, aim high, be positive and go for gold!

Jasper took a gap year which involved spending an internship as a ship broker in Singapore, working voluntary at an orphanage in rural Thailand, and a second internship at a law firm in Berlin. After, Jasper read Law at LMU Munich with an exchange semester in Istanbul.

During his studies, he went on an expedition to Antarctica with Rob Swan, OBE, and worked at the Max Planck Institute for Competition and Innovation.

He is now a PhD student as well as a Research and Teaching Assistant at the University of Hamburg. His thesis is focused on comparative corporate insolvency law, for which he spent a term as a visiting researcher at Oxford in 2016.

Through this scholarship programme she was awarded a place on the Laing O’Rourke Graduate Programme, where she currently works as a Design Technician for LIMA, which is a cluster of water work projects in the North West, and she is currently working towards her CIOB Chartership.

Events Review

Another highlight of the day was a dramatic 'Tug of War' between a school select side and an Old Giggleswickian all-comers side. An enthusiastic crowd gathered to watch the spectacle on Top Pitch during the cricket match tea break. The competition was fierce and the contest was close, but the sheer willpower (and weight) of the Old Giggleswickian team won the day and they were extremely proud to take the title of inaugural victors. This will now become a regular fixture at future OG Days, bringing back all the emotive memories of the annual Inter-House Tug of War competitions our OGs took part in during their time at school.

Thank you to everyone who attended; it was a pleasure to see you back at Giggleswick.

OG Day Saturday 30 June 2018 Beautiful sunshine welcomed over 250 OGs and their guests back to Giggleswick for the annual Old Giggleswickian Day. It was wonderful to see so many old friends catching up on life after Giggleswick and enjoying memories of their time at school, and it was a delight to see so many new faces.

After a memorable and moving Chapel service for our former and current students, OGs were provided with tours of the school by our Lower Sixth pupils, followed by a delicious lunch in the Dining Hall. In his speech, the Headmaster thanked Anthony Briggs, this year’s OG Club President, for his endless commitment and support for the school. Anthony passed on the chain of office to Richard Warburton who was appointed as the new OG Club President.

The afternoon was full of family activities including School XI v OG XI cricket, clay pigeon shooting, tennis, bouncy castles and face painting, all finished by a delicious

The whole community of Giggleswickians, including OGs, parents, staff and friends of the school, enjoyed a special evening at this year's annual London Dinner in the splendour of the House of Commons.

The Palace of Westminster is one of the world's iconic buildings and our guests were treated to a personal tour of the House of Commons by Nigel Evans MP, followed by drinks on the famous Terrace Balcony overlooking the Thames, then dinner in the Churchill Room.

Sam Wood (P, 13) gave the Loyal Toast, Anthony Briggs (OG Club President 20178) proposed the Toast to the School and Headmaster, Mark Turnbull, gave the Toast to the OG Club.

The theme of the evening was ‘Change’ and our host, Nigel Evans MP, gave a fascinating guest speech highlighting the changes that have taken place in the House of Commons over the last 25 years.

spoke about new developments at the school, the importance of the Giggleswick community and celebrating the amazing range of talent among the school’s current pupils.

Anthony Briggs said: “It was a real honour and pleasure to bring everyone together in such a wonderful environment with plenty of entertaining conversation throughout the evening. There is much to celebrate across the school and such great warmth among all Giggleswickians. We must all keep in touch and keep supporting this wonderful school.”

Crufts came to Giggleswick earlier this year as pooches of all shapes, sizes and colours descended on Top Pitch with their owners for our first ever Dog Show & Shooting Day. The weather was perfect and the competition was intense with parents, staff and OGs proudly parading their pets. The hard task of judging fell to Richard Nelson from Windermere who scrutinized every perfectly preened pooch from Miniature Dachshunds, Spaniels and Bearded Collies to Labradors, Retrievers and Scottish Deer Hounds. After long deliberation, Skye, the Flat-Coated Retriever, owned by parent Carole Stephens, was crowned Giggleswick Show Champion.

The shooting was also a great success, with 10 visitors trying their hand at shooting clays for the first time and many hitting the target.

Congratulations to Junior School parent parent, Justin McChesney, for hitting the most clays, winning a day shooting with Richard Warburton.

Thanks to everyone involved and everyone who attended. We managed to raise £380 for the Giggleswick School Annual Fund 2017/18.

Foundation Golf Day Sunday 13 May Now in its fifth year, the Giggleswick Foundation Golf Day has become one of the most enjoyable events in the calendar for golfers of all ages across the Giggleswick community. This year, the competition was held at Bentham Golf Club, owned by the Marshall family and managed by Isobel Marshall, an Old Giggleswickian.

Lancashire Dinner Friday 2 February

Nine teams took part and the competition was fierce, but the honours were eventually taken by a young team from the golf club who beat the staff team (John Hamilton, Fergus Ogilvie, Liberty Watambwa & James Wright) by a mere two points.

50 guests including OGs, parents and friends of the school gathered at the fabulous new Bowland Brewery at Holmes Mill, one the latest redevelopment projects by the awardwinning James’ Places. Guests had the opportunity to try the craft beer ‘The Giggleswick Giggler’ and enjoy a ‘Back to School’ themed dinner of Lancashire Hotpot and Sticky Toffee Pudding!

Over the years, the Foundation Golf Day has raised over £4000 for bursaries to support talented young sportsmen and sportswomen who would not otherwise be able to benefit from a Giggleswick education. We are really grateful for the efforts of the OG Golfing Society and to Bob Barker for organising the event every year and for his ongoing support for the Giggleswick Foundation.

Gigg:Circular Old Giggleswickians’ Life Events Phil Andrew (Honorary OG 1997-2017) FEBRUARY 1975 – DECEMBER 2017 Phil arrived at Gigg as a PGCE student, fresh faced and enthusiastic about all things technological. It quickly became clear that his many interests were perfectly suited to Giggleswick at that time. His ‘can do’ attitude and ultimate practicality in the way that he turned his hand to almost any skill made him an invaluable resource for the burgeoning school.

His first major achievement was the installation of the school’s first complete intranet network.

Grovelling under floorboards and hanging from ladders, Phil installed most of this by hand himself during school holidays and weekends. As a young(ish) head of department, I was constantly impressed by the level of support that he offered in his daily visits to the Geography department to ensure that all was working satisfactorily.

As resident tutor in Paley, his pastoral skills were being honed under Mike Hall, and it was evident that his sensitivity for the boys in his care would see him marked out as a future Housemaster. As the Millennium passed, the technologies used in schools were changing so fast that normal humans had to run to keep up, not so Phil. He embraced the rapid pace of change and had become

Barry was a confidante and doctor to many, and an inspirational leader in General Practice

indispensable as Head of IT systems.

His inevitable appointment as Housemaster of Nowell would have made a lesser man understandably step back from their wider responsibilities. responsibilities; Phil was not a lesser man. He oversaw and planned the complete networking and wireless installation of the Hostel Block, whilst at the same time caring in his inimitable manner for the 50 young men in his charge.

Phil was a man of many talents; he could cook for 60 cadets in the Highlands, produce pancakes on an industrial scale in Nowell, whilst planning a weekend of organ restoration around choir rehearsals and CCF commitments. At this point, it is important to remember his beautiful tenor voice. His support of local choirs and the Chapel choir in particular was impressive.

So much more could be said about this outstanding gentleman and it undoubtedly will be. The young men of Nowell House and all those whose lives he touched are the far richer for having known him. We will remember his guffawing laugh, his his melodious voice, and his 'never say no' attitude to all.

Medicine at a time of great change.

In 1942, Barry’s father brought him from Wales to Giggleswick, and thus began a lifelong attachment to Craven. A proud Nowell boy, Barry became a keen athlete, particularly excelling middle-distance running. At the age of 18 Barry started his National Service, spending time at Fort George and then in Hong Kong as a Lieutenant.

After completing National Service, Barry attended Trinity College Dublin to study Natural Sciences.

He then studied Medicine at TCD, and after six years, he and seven other Territorial Army Parachute Regiment colleagues took the opportunity to test to destruction two Land Rovers by travelling overland round the world. The expedition began in 1959 driving across Turkey, India, Bangkok, Singapore and Australia. Here Barry learned the art of tonsillectomy in Freemantle Hospital in Perth before continuing by ship to Aden and plane to Nairobi. After meeting the Emperor, Haile Selassie, during a stopover in Addis Ababa they continues on to Tunis, Sicily and home.

Returning to Dublin, Barry completed his obstetric training at the Rotunda Hospital. Here he fell in love with a theatre sister, marrying 'Scottie' in 1962. He diverted to General Practice, having been told of an opening in Settle. He became junior partner to David Hyslop, each of them running their respective surgeries in their homes. Barry, always seeking to improve the care of patients, persuaded David to join him in the radical new thinking of running a joint practice which they did initially from The Folly in Settle. After David's retirement, Barry was joined by new partners and together they helped design and build the award-winning Townhead Surgeries which opened in 1976. At this time Barry assisted in the local A&E department at Airedale General Hospital, remained a medical officer in the Territorial Army in addition to his role as School Medical Officer at Giggleswick for 20 years. He became President of MOSA. In 1977 Barry was awarded the Queen’s Award for Bravery after disarming an inebriated patient who was threatening members of the public. In 1989-90 the BBC commissioned a documentary about General Practice, and and Barry and his team were to become the stars. The film was shown in 1991 and it shows the day to day life of doctors and patients in the Dales at a time when Primary Care was about to change forever, with the loss of night duty rotas and uncoupling of the fundamental 24 hour relationship between the GP practice and its patients.

Barry retired in August 1992 to pursue his hobbies of travelling, often in his campervan, wood turning, vegetable gardening and listening to music. He is survived by Scottie, their three children and their families.

Phil Thomas (Honorary OG 1989-2011) SEPTEMBER 1954 - JANUARY 2018 Born in Birmingham in 1954, Phil thrived at School and went to Cardiff University to study Mathematics, followed by a teaching course at Bristol. He taught in 3 schools before moving to Giggleswick in 1989 when his wife, Jenny, become Housemistress of Carr.

Phil Thomas was a unique and special schoolmaster. Arriving in Giggleswick as an IT teacher, he was responsible for setting up and teaching much of the early computer studies in School.

However he was really a mathematician and before long was a full-time member of the Maths Department. As such, he did much to make an often unpopular subject accessible to pupils. His laid back approach, and down-to-earth wisdom, helped pupils gain a good understanding and made him a popular teacher. Outside the classroom he was fully involved in many activities: Outdoor Pursuits, Shooting, and CCF as well as being a House Tutor in Nowell. He was responsible for the creation of the Claypigeon Club and was also a member of the Settle Rifle Club. He passed his Range Officers qualification and went on several CCF camps to assist with shooting on the ranges. He also went on climbing trips to the Pyrenees, as well as the Battlefields Tours.

One of his passions was cars, having various Land-rovers, and latterly his Mazda sports car. Other interests included music, reading, World War 1 memorabilia, and visits to the Hart’s Head Inn. Dedicating 21 years’ service to Giggleswick, teaching and encouraging its pupils, he will be remembered by many generations of OGs and staff for his sense of humour and his approachability.

CARTMELL, JOHN (ST, 45) DECEASED 06/03/2018 FURNISS, CHRIS (N,62) DECEASED 14/02/2018 OGs will be very sad to hear of the death of Chris Furniss. Chris had happy memories of his days as a pupil at Giggleswick when Russell Harty taught here. He went on train as a lawyer.

Chris and his wife, Jan, were involved in many aspects of life in Kirkstall, being an integral part of the setting up of the successful Kirkstall Village Community Association. Chris had a great sense of humour, and his eccentricity and ability to take a sideways look at all manner of topics made him good fun to be around. Our sympathies go to Jan, their five children, and rapidly growing number of grandchildren.

KILBURN, MARGARET (HONORARY OG 1990-2018) DECEASED 30/05/2018 Margaret started work at Giggleswick School 28 years ago on 18th April 1990. She started her career at Giggleswick working in the original Dining Room, now known as the Sharpe Library, and was often often heard saying to the young people working in the kitchen that they didn't know how easy they had it nowadays.

She was extremely proud to say that she worked at Giggleswick and was extremely conscientious. Until later years she served at all the House Dinners, Governors Luncheons, OG Day and Leavers' Balls. OG Day was her favourite event and she usually had a queue of OGs wanting to reminisce and introduce their partners and children. Margaret had an amazing memory and remembered all OG's who came to chat with her.

Margaret had a routine that kept her in touch with all aspects of school life, from delivering supplies to departments, to chatting with the pupils at the Junior School who always made her a card every term to say thank you for their stidge. She served on the same counter every day – still known as ‘Maggie's Counter’ where she served with a style we can only say was all her own! Pupils were reminded to say 'please' and 'thank you' and she became a mother hen to the children and some of the staff she served.

ODDIE, BILL (ST, 60) DECEASED 21/04/2018 Hundreds of people paid their last respects to Bill Oddie. He was at the helm of the familyrun bakery for 50 years.

He spent the last 30 years as Managing Director.

Bill had strong connections with, and was a great supporter of, the school. Bill served as President of the OG Club and Captain of the OG Golf Society. He was an accomplished rugby player and cricketer, turning out for Blackburn Rugby Club and batting for Nelson Cricket Club in the Lancashire League.

As a life member of Lancashire County Cricket Club, he travelled the globe watching cricket with his wife, Leslie, whom he married in 1966.

Bill was seen as a well-respected member of the community and has been described by his daughter, Lara, as an ‘old-fashioned gentleman’ who had a ‘crackerjack’ sense of humour. He will be very much missed by everybody who knew and loved him.

PRINCE, JEREMY (C, 62) DECEASED 27/12/2017 PLATT, GEORGE EDWARD (N, 41) DECEASED 8/03/2018 Born in 1924, Edward attended Giggleswick as a boarder from the age of 8 until the age of 16.

After the war, Edward set up in business with his wife and they bought a village shop in Bakewell, Derbyshire. They had two sons, Anthony and Timothy.

Moving around the country they settled in Henley-on-Thames, running a village shop and post office. In 1967, Edward trained to be a teacher. He rose to the level of Deputy Head Teacher and served on the Berkshire Education Authority Mathematics Curriculum Board.

Edward had his Giggleswick Tie and Blazer badge safely stored in the wardrobe with other bits and pieces from his school days. He often talked about that time and the cross country runs up the local scar.

Events Diary

We would like to welcome Belinda Eldridge to the Development & Alumni Office as our newly appointed Director of Development.

Belinda has joined us from the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, where she was a Director for nearly five years.

Responsible for the trading company and all income generation, she recently completed an additional ÂŁ3.6 million visitor centre to cope with the huge increase in numbers visiting the park. Responsible for bringing the Poppies from the Tower of London to Yorkshire and advising other hosting venues nationally, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park continues to go from strength to strength. Prior to this she had nine years at BT plc, where as Head of TV Outside Broadcasting in the UK, she was responsible for the televising of the Football Premiership, Wimbledon, Cricket, Rugby and many programmes including Strictly Come Dancing, part of the Olympics, The Proms and many more.

Belinda now lives about 15 minutes from Giggleswick with her husband Simon and their daughter Evie, who will be starting at Gigg this September in Year One. They have a black Labrador called Max who is just six months old and is being trained at present, although he does have a taste for oak furniture and plasterboard!
