INTRODUCTION

THE JUNIOR CHRONICLE 2019 Welcome to our 2019 edition of the Giggleswick Junior School Chronicle, which marks an important milestone in our history this year with the launch of Mill House, our new pre-school for two to four year olds.

The Chronicle is a much-loved record and reminder of the many wonderful events, trips, visits, competitions, clubs and activities that our pupils have enjoyed through the year. There has been so much to celebrate, but for me, one of the real highlights has been to see how we have continued

to develop opportunities for our older pupils to support and mentor the youngest children. They have contributed so much to our school where respect and a genuine care for others prevails.

Our Speech Day theme this year was ‘Embracing Ambition’, which links to one of our core values and as you will see from the pages of this Chronicle, the children and staff have certainly demonstrated this in so many different ways.

Alongside all these amazing experiences, the feedback from staff is always about how much our pupils develop emotionally through these challenges, particularly in terms of building resilience and fostering a greater growth mindset.

As a school we continue to pride ourselves on our broad and balanced curriculum for our pupils, one that provides a wealth of opportunities, skills, confidence and an all-round education.

A

mbition is one of our core values and an important aspect of the school’s continual focus on helping to develop a growth mindset in all our pupils. Effort, determination and a genuine desire to improve are all important factors for success in whatever we do and whatever challenges we face.

As a school we continue to pride ourselves on our broad and balanced curriculum for our pupils, one that provides a wealth of opportunities, skills, confidence and an all-round education. English and Maths are very important of course, but not at the expense of learning languages and about cultures, or time spent in the art room, music school, science lab, games fields, or out of the junior school on trips and visits.

Inspiring enquiring young minds This year’s Evacuee Day must stand out as one of the best trips we have ever done. The whole experience, from dressing up (staff and parents included) and the procession into Settle with our Giggleswick banner

and taking part in 1940’s games in Victoria Hall, to catching a train at the station and being ‘picked’ by our parent volunteers in Horton, will no doubt live long in the memory of everyone involved.

It was no coincidence that the followup writing session on recounting the life of an evacuee saw some of the best writing the children have produced. It is so much easier to write with the experience to draw upon.

A new initiative this year has been our independent research project in Year 5 and Year 6. One of our half-termly topics included favourite authors and it was great to see such a diverse array of writers chosen by the children and a clear love of reading. Earlier this year we were visited by Cat Weatherill, a children’s writer and performance storyteller who really enthused and motivated the children during her workshops. We now have our very own published authors who have contributed to a book featuring poems written by children themselves.

Another highlight has been the opportunity to look at careers and volunteering opportunities, with sessions organised in PSHCE by Mrs Mundell. These included a visit from a

activities this time. The year ended with a fabulous residential week at Caythorpe Park, with Year 6 relishing the opportunity to try their hand at climbing, archery, quad biking and lots of water-based activities and challenges.

Sporting ambitions and personal bests It wouldn’t be a review of the year without me including sport: whether it be on the rugby field, driving on to win important advantage, or seeking to develop improved ball control on

the hockey pitch, or on the athletics track trying to improve personal bests and even breaking records. With the support of our staff and their own endeavour, our pupils have got better and better.

I would like to mention our four finalists (Georgia Twist, William Battersby, Lucy Cowin and Mathilda Evans) who took part in the North Yorkshire Primary School competition. To be amongst the best runners in the county is an achievement in itself, but to come away with our first-ever medal was particularly rewarding.

Congratulations to Georgia Twist who came third in the Year 3 Girls’ race. Interestingly, despite this being a massive success, Georgia was disappointed not to have come first!

Again, clear ambition amongst even some of our younger pupils, which is to be admired.

A passion for performing arts Performing arts is another important aspect of learning at Giggleswick. This year we have allocated even more time to this subject, not only to better prepare our pupils for the various performances across the year, but to help develop their overall confidence when performing in front of others.

In the Autumn Term, a large cast of children from Reception to Year 6 performed ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’, and it has been wonderful to see dance featuring more prominently in our performances, including the Mother’s Day and Parent events in March and our Performing Arts Festival in the Summer Term. It has been particularly good to see our youngest and oldest pupils perform together.

All provided hands-on experiences for the children and hopefully has sparked an ambition in one or two of them to follow in their footsteps.

Celebrating our co-curriculum At Giggleswick, our co-curriculum is just as important as our curriculum, with so many clubs and activities now available after school. This year, all our staff ran their own club, which gave the children the opportunity to take part in activities ranging from cookery, gardening, running and construction, to swimming, art, knitting, drama and outdoor adventure. There are not many schools who could provide such breadth each week.

Our unique provision of outdoor pursuits continues to grow and improve. Our forest school is flourishing and Mrs Western’s weekly club, which harnesses outdoor skills within this environment, has been hugely popular. Our Year 5s enjoyed their overnight stay at Ingleborough Hall with Mr Roe and Mrs Bagot, with caving and geocaching being the core

George Collins, one of our former pupils, came to perform in the junior school ahead of his successful audition at the prestigious Berklee Music School in Boston, USA. Some of George’s first performances were staged at the junior school. Back in 2012, as a Year 6 pupil, he was the joint winner of the Young Musician of the Year competition, this time on the saxophone. It is therefore particularly fitting that this year’s winner is also a saxophonist, Poppy Coward, who has won this accolade a year younger than George. Well done Poppy!

As well as Poppy, we have some very talented musicians and performers.

Our festival saw Martha Lloyd win the All-Rounder Prize and our Drama Prize went to Lucy Giles and Marianne Robinson-Baker.

Our play, ‘Ye-Ha!’ was particularly ambitious in terms of artistic and musical direction. Providing such a memorable experience with top performances and high standards throughout is no mean feat and thanks must go to Liobhan Boylan for her wonderful support and direction in bringing the show together. We are also hugely grateful to Mrs McGoldrick for her huge contribution to our productions every year and sad that it will be her last as as she leaves us to join the senior school art department next year. Her skills, knowledge and caring manner with the children have been an asset to the school, together with her personal desire to further improve this important subject.

Pastoral development and pupil voice Alongside all the highlights and successes, there are a few things that have made this year particularly stand out.

The first is the development of our Reception class and the greater links with Key Stage 1. The partnership between Mrs Western and Ms Horsman has been great to see, supporting each to deliver a muchimproved provision for our younger pupils. The results of these pupils this year has been incredible.

The second is the greater integration of our pupils across the school. As well as a more joined up and cohesive pastoral curriculum, Miss Sismey has worked closer with our pupils to allow them to have their say on how effective our school systems are. They have also reviewed our bullying and behaviour policies and procedures.

Another great example of pupil voice has been a fund-raising initiative and class assembly led by Marianne, who has been on a mission to ban palm oil and protect endangered species.

The introduction of a Year 6 buddy system has been a revelation.

Watching both sets of pupils gain so much from the experience, particularly emotionally, has been incredible and at times very moving. This greater sense of community and caring culture led by the pupils has permeated across the school. Watching them instinctively look after our pre-school pupils during our official opening was particularly touching to witness.

Mill House gets a grand opening April 2019 marked another important milestone in the history of the school with the launch of Mill House, our new pre-school for two to four year olds. Congratulations and thanks to Mr Shuttleworth, Mrs Byrne, Miss Follows and the wider team for their vision, passion and hard work to create this wonderful new setting for

our youngest learners. The end result is one of the highlights of my time at Giggleswick.

Our aim has always been to provide the very best start for children in their educational journey and I am delighted to see that Mill House is already winning the hearts and minds of local families with its enriching education and homely environment for children from the age of two.

Happy children make successful learners And finally, looking ahead, we wish our Year 6 leavers every success in their next big step on to senior school.

Although they have been probably one of our smallest group of Year 6 pupils to leave the junior school, they still leave a large imprint and big shoes to fill. They have led the way in how they have cared for our youngest pupils. They have taken on the various roles and responsibilities they have been given with care and maturity. They have made the most of the opportunities that have come their way and they have succeeded in so many aspects.

Ambition has been our theme this year, but enjoyment has been an equally important thread that has run through it. This is a happy school with happy children who share an enthusiasm for learning and who support, encourage and care for one another. All of this happens thanks to our teachers and parents working together and embracing a desire to encourage these people to be the best they can be, in whatever they choose to be. Ambition really is enthusiasm with a purpose.

EXPERIENCING LIFE AS AN EVACUEE Organised alongside the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, our Evacuee Day experience was based on archived letters sent by evacuees who made the same journey in 1939.

O

ur Year 4 and 5 pupils joined children from Settle Primary School to take part in an exciting evacuation day trip, dressing and acting as evacuees travelling from Bradford to Horton-in-Ribblesdale on the train.

Organised alongside the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, the experience was based on archived letters sent by evacuees who made the same journey in 1939.

Many of the evacuees did not have a suitable bag for their belongings

and to create a sense of realism, pupils brought their belongings in a pillowcase with their lunch provided in a tin box or greaseproof paper.

Violet said, “We were all given ration books and identity cards. Whilst we waited at the station, we opened our pillowcases and ate our 1940’s packed lunch.”

Lucy added, “We walked from Victoria Hall in Settle, following a large banner with the name of our school. It was really great fun! We played 1940’s games like Who am I? and I-Spy.”

When the pupils arrived at Horton-inRibblesdale, they walked to the village school to meet their ‘pickers’ to talk about how their lives would be as an evacuee in a new village.

“My picker was called Mrs Rogers;” said Violet. “She was the vicar’s wife who had two daughters, one son and three cats! We then all wrote postcards home describing what our new homes are like.”

A big thank you to the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and all the volunteer pickers who made such a memorable experience possible.

‘BIG SING’ AT RIBBLEHEAD

CAT WEATHERILL VISITS GIGGLESWICK

We were delighted to be selected as one of seven primary schools from the Yorkshire Dales to work on the North Yorkshire Music Service project that resulted in a ‘Big Sing’ under the arches of Ribblehead viaduct.

Over 300 children gathered to rehearse the songs at Clapham Church during the morning before being transported to the viaduct for the performance in the afternoon.

They sang three folk songs with a Yorkshire flavour, including one about

the building of the Victorian Settle to Carlisle railway.

The Big Sing initiative is a partnership between North Yorkshire’s Music Service and the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust to enable children to come together to sing as a way of

getting them to understand and take pride in their heritage and history.

The Ribblehead initiative formed part of the Trust’s Heritage Lottery funded ‘Stories in Stone’ project, which is in its fourth year.

We welcomed the author Cat Weatherill to school as part of Broughton Hall’s Children’s Literature Festival.

Cat discussed her career as a writer, providing lots of valuable tips and shared some of her stories with the children before finishing with some fun games.

WORLD BOOK DAY Everyone from pre-school right through to Year 6 celebrated World Book Day in great style.

CAROL SERVICE We celebrated the end of the Autumn term with a wonderful carol service in the Chapel.

T

hey worked together, shared ideas and wrote captions for a story about a clown and a farmer. They then drew themselves as clowns and thought of some fantastic descriptive words for the characters, considering their thoughts and feelings in the illustration.

WILD WEST WONDERLAND WITH YE-HA!

Georgia Lewis respectively), the protective and feisty Ma Hubbard (Elodie Martin’s convincing accent was impressively sustained throughout), and Rafferty Bannister’s Chip Checker was comforting as the show’s narrator and resident barman.

The real key to the success of the performance, however, was the exceptional teamwork from every single ensemble member – it was

often easy to forget that some of them were only in Year 3! The complex choreography was performed expertly, as were the tricky musical numbers, and every single participant seemed to be having a fantastic time on stage. This is always what wins over an audience in the end; the cast’s sense of fun became infectious, sweeping the audience off their feet to a ‘Little Ol’ Town’. Everyone was clapping along by the end of this show

and there were several audience members clearly keen to join in the barn dance in the final number.

This was a production that allowed you to escape the hardships of modern life and take you back to a far simpler and more carefree way of living. Ye-Ha! Miles Warburton

This year, Giggleswick Junior School brought all the fun and adventure of the Wild West to the Richard Whiteley Theatre for its Year 3 to 6 production of Ye Ha!

Most striking was how the children captivated and engaged the audience from the first scene right through to the last. The detailed and intricate set immediately transported everyone watching back to the Wild West and the brilliant performances of the children involved allowed you to suspend disbelief for the entire show.

This production captured the freedom and spirit of life in a simpler time, but also pointed to the dangers and tensions that arise in a lawless society.

A particular highlight was the final showdown between a mysterious,

20

masked figure and the town’s doublecrossing Mayor, Tex Truman. You could cut the tension with a knife as a classic Mexican stand-off played out.

Doing their best to retain order in Splodge City is the newly-elected Sheriff and reluctant hero of the play, Wilbur Hubbard, played sensitively by Martha Lloyd, who had the unenviable task of singing the show’s opening song on her own. Well done Martha!

Joining Wilbur on an epic quest to rid the town of wrongdoers is Billy-Jo Brisket, a wandering vigilante who

does not believe being a girl should stop her from doing good. This part was undertaken enthusiastically by Lily Truscott who was always on hand to swoop in to save the day. Together, the two seemed unstoppable and these young actors illustrated with ease a real sense of camaraderie and trust in one another.

Other supporting roles also stood out during the performance, including the dastardly pair Howling Mad Dog McNut and Bronco Bill (played menacingly by Max Scholey and

CHRISTMAS WITH THE ALIENS! Congratulations to all our fabulous children who performed the nativity ‘Christmas with the Aliens’.

T

he Junior School Performing Arts Festival is an important and much-loved annual event at Giggleswick, providing all our pupils with the opportunity to showcase their talents in music, dance, speech and drama. It is also a chance for them to experience performing in front of an audience. After lots of hard work practising at school and at home, the pupils performed in groups and individually, with prizes awarded by our judge, Spencer Moran, a former Giggleswick pupil and graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music.

he children welcomed their new intergalactic friends to learn about the story of Christmas, ready to share it with the rest of the universe!

ur ballet dancers worked extremely hard for a number of weeks to create their adaptation of the children’s ballet ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’, which they performed to an audience in Catteral Assembly Hall. The children used their miming skills beautifully and really concentrated hard throughout the performance.

SPORTS DAY There were some super individual performances throughout the age groups with no fewer than seven new records!!

A

s is tradition, the afternoon started with the Whole-House Shuttle Relay for pupils from Year 1 to Year 6. Thereafter, the real competition began with the girls embarking on their track events while the boys tackled the technical events in the field (jumping and throwing) before changing round at the halfway point. The relays rounded off the occasion.

The children put in lots of effort, trying hard to employ the technical skills they have been learning during the term in the PE and Athletics sessions. The weather also meant everyone was enjoying themselves, even the distance runners who did very well in the hot conditions.

Eliza Mallinson and Robert Shuttleworth stole the show at Year 1-2 level, and the year group as a whole put together a very entertaining show in the relay race at the end of the afternoon.

In the U11 events, Mathilda Evans set new records in the 1200m and long jump, and in the boys’ section Freddie Robinson and Charlie Harrison dominated their events, engaged in a duel for the Victor Ludorum.

Mylan Baladi and William Battersby performed well in the U9 boys’ events as did Albert Denneny who broke the 50m record had stood since 2008.

In the U9 girls’ event the record book was re-written with some impressive performances from Lucy Cowin in the 50m, 600m and long jump, and Georgia Twist in the 150m, and a joint best performance from Charlotte Denney and Maisee Fairhurst in the Rounders Ball Throw.

The athletics was followed up with a fantastic afternoon tea party in the Pavilion, put on by the Giggleswick School Parents’ Association. Mr Mundell and Mr Cook presented the prizes to each of the event winners and to the best boy and girl athlete of the day. Charlie Harrison was winner of the Victor Ludorum and Mathilda Evans was winner of the Victrix Ludorum. The overall House result was a resounding victory for Ingleborough.

THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE Pen-y-Ghent

Nine runners completed the first of the Three Peaks Challenge 2019 by running from Dalehead to the summit of Pen-y-Ghent. We enjoyed warm weather and regular stops to talk about the scenery, flora and fauna and land uses in the area. From the summit we gained spectacular views that included the tops of Fountains Fell, Pendle Hill, Smearsett Scar, Ingleborough, Whernside and the upper reaches of Ribblesdale.

For the second part of the Three Peaks Challenge 2019, runners took on the impressive hill of Ingleborough for their evening run. Sun, blue skies and a gentle breeze provided the perfect running conditions, with dry paths underfoot. We stopped along the way to talk about the landscape, being properly prepared for running and safety on the hill. We reached the peak and enjoyed the views and evidence of the pre-historic stone hut circles on the plateau top before descending safely back to the minibus.

The running group travelled over to Kingsdale to tackle the last of this year’s summits – Whernside. Although this is the highest peak of the three, approaching it from the Kingsdale side knocks quite a lot of the climb off the run. However, once out of the minibus it is pretty much straight uphill for the 1400m to the top on an unmade track that was wet and muddy on the day with a strong crosswind too. Once at the top, we had the customary photos and enjoyed views to Pendle Hill, the Howgills, the Lake District and Morecambe Bay before descending back to the finish.

SCARRET

CATTERAL SHIELD The Catteral Shield cross-country championship is always a highlight in our sporting calendar and this year we welcomed 23 schools to the event.

It was a beautiful autumn day for Scarret, the annual inter-house cross-country championships, with a course that was firm underfoot and ideal for running.

T

he U9 team went first and it was great to see every runner breaking the 10-minute barrier on a challenging course. The girls’ race was won by Lucy Cowin, with Georgia Twist in second and Maisee Fairhurst in third. The boys’ race was won by William Battersby, Albert Denneny was second and Kieron Hough third.

The U11 course is 500m longer and includes double the vertical climb with just over 60m of ascent. The top three places were filled by Mathilda Evans who had a very strong run, Willa Bailey close behind and then Elodie Martin. The boys’ winner was Charlie Harrison and Freddie Robinson and Rafferty Bannister came second and third respectively.

It was super to see all the runners putting in a determined effort. It has been great to watch and record improvements, particularly as a number of pupils had not had much cross-country and endurance running opportunities previously.

T

here were races at U11 and U13 level for both boys and girls over the challenging Papes and Ghyll Field circuit. Despite slippy conditions underfoot, there was some excellent running and all the races were well contested. It was particularly pleasing to see all pupils in Giggleswick Junior School from Years 3 to 6 competing, as well as two boys’ teams and a team of nine girls taking part in the U13 races.

GIGGLESWICK HOSTS CROSS-COUNTRY INVITATIONAL

I

n December we hosted the annual local primary school cross-country invitational, in which eight schools took part. It was great to see some well-contested races despite the challenging course and conditions underfoot. Well done to all our runners, in particular the U9 girls who came first in the team competition and the U9 boys who came second.

Our Reception class braved the weather over winter and walked to Settle Library where they enjoyed a dinosaur story-time session and explored all the wonderful books independently.

We have enjoyed singing and dancing this year and the children have practised their ‘mouth aerobics’ and ‘tongue twisters’ with enthusiasm. They have also worked very hard at building new words.

We have been using the iPads to write and illustrate some super stories.

SCIENCE We experimented with different materials, predicting whether they will float or sink.

The class had a great time visiting Mr Atkinson in the science labs at the senior school where they learnt even more about dinosaurs and fossils.

MATHS

We welcomed some new friends from Barrowford St Thomas C of E Primary School The children worked together to learn about forces in the science labs and made some amazing outdoor art on the Ghyll field. They also had a marvellous time launching a rocket together which reached “ higher than the whole school!”.

We made the most of the good weather over the summer and have enjoyed some outdoor maths lessons, counting fences, steps and even estimating the number of daffodils in a field!

We have been learning all about money and recognising all the different coins.

CHINESE NEW YEAR We had a wonderful time celebrating Chinese New Year. The children made a dragon, learned about the zodiac calendar and the animal race, and enjoyed a visit from Paco from the Sixth form, who talked to the children about how he and his family celebrate New Year.

Madam Wulf held a French themed party when the class had earned a full jar of sparkles!

SPECIAL VISITORS Many thanks to all the students from the senior school who visited us to read some stories and join in with our nativity preparations.

OUTDOOR ART We have been using natural resources to make outdoor art.

DANNY THE RABBIT Otto and his mum brought Danny the Rabbit in to visit Reception. Otto told the children all about rabbits and how to look after them.

Mr Shepherd helped the children make a stick house using wattle and daub plaster.

We had a super time exploring Hornby Castle.

We spent a cultural afternoon listening to Autumn from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and then got creative painting with autumnal colours.

ACE DESIGNER Our topic ‘Move It’ ended on a high with the children creating fantastic moving models of vehicles, applying all their research into how axles and wheels are designed.

Our catering company, Holroyd Howe, organised a fantastic baking experience for Year 1 and 2, who then provided a wonderful ‘Three Little Pigs’ themed lunch.

SPECIAL VISITOR Micah’s dad came into class and told us all about his time at school in Zimbabwe.

SIZERGH CASTLE Year 3 really enjoyed their visit to Sizergh Castle where they journeyed along the Wild Trail completing riddles.

The trail tested our pupils’ balance, stamina, resolve and brainpower and took them off the beaten track into the depths of the wood allowing them to experience ancient trees, exotic looking fungus and beautiful ground flora.

For the first part of the trail they had to climb using hand grips before scurrying through a tunnel where they found a bird on a nest. Next, they abseiled down a rocky cliff, which was fun but a bit tricky and they were rewarded by finding a giant frog at the bottom.

RIBCHESTER ROMAN MUSEUM Along the way they also found a tree which had been struck by lightning, giant wishbones and some bats and birds. The day ended with some den building and everyone enjoyed a turn on the rope swings. A great afternoon was had by all.

We had a fascinating afternoon examining artefacts from Roman times at Ribchester. The children found out all about the importance of the fort and explored the remains. Most enjoyable was an opportunity to dress up as a Roman soldier!

CELEBRATING KARNEVAL After many weeks of preparation; rehearsing songs and dances, making masks and learning about carnival time in Germany, Year 3 finally got to celebrate their very own Karneval! We paraded with our masks, impressing the Early Years children and Year 5 as we passed their classrooms. When Mr Mundell arrived, he asked for a slice of Angus’s wonderful rainbow cake in German – ‘Ich möchte Kuchen bitte’. Our German assistant, Charlotte has just been to a real Karneval in Germany and she told us that she heard the Fliegerlied and thought of us!

ENGLISH Performance poetry has been our focus in creative writing, understanding that rhyme and rhythm really help to create an entertaining rap. After writing our own poems, with Year 4, we practised our performing in front of Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.

The class investigated what makes a successful advert and was tasked with helping Zeppar to advertise their new resort ‘Astroland’, which is targeted at children. They worked together in small groups to create adverts that use alliteration, personal pronouns, rhetorical questions and some super vocabulary to market the resort.

SCIENCE We examined magnets to see how well they worked through different materials.

Our young scientists investigated push and pull forces using a toy car catapult. They predicted the car would go further forward if it was pulled back further. Their prediction was correct!

In our topic on plants we looked at how the stem carries water.

NICE AND NASTY ENVIRONMENTS!

Year 3 enjoyed their end of year walk and trip to Ingleborough Cave.

In Geography we investigated what can be done to help improve the environment. We thought about what makes a ‘nice’ and a ‘nasty’ environment and created our own boxes to show these. Well done to Rubyann and Harry for creating a very ‘nasty’ box filled with litter, a dirty pond and dead trees! Jack and Georgia demonstrated super teamwork with their ‘nice’ box filled with a fire, plenty of healthy trees and a clean pond for animals to live in.

LEARNING ABOUT AFRICA Madam Wulf taught the children how to speak Zulu, how to ‘click’, and even how to dance!

When Madam Wulf found out Year 4 were learning about Africa in their English lesson she couldn’t wait to join in and tell the children all about her

childhood growing up in South Africa.

She taught the children how to speak Zulu, how to ‘click’, and even how to dance! The children looked at African artefacts that she had collected over the years and took part in a sensitive discussion all about apartheid.

ORANGUTAN ASSEMBLY After writing an inspiring and heartfelt letter to Mr Mundell about saving the orangutans, Marianne was asked to devise a class assembly with her peers to present to the whole school.

Year 4 showcased a fabulous selection of speeches, role plays, raps and a song all about the rainforest.

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY AND COMPUTING The class worked together to solve the design brief of designing, programming and building a fire engine which self-navigates to an emergency. Everyone applied their skills to experiment and create their work. Perhaps their design will become a fire engine of the future!

WORLD MUSIC DAY

Eight of our students from Year 4 visited Settle train station’s World Music Day event to listen to and play the station’s piano. The children learnt the tune ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’, with each child learning a couple of bars of the music. The children also brought their own music with them and gave a performance of Grade 1 pieces, scales and even the Bohemian Rhapsody!

MINDFULNESS Mrs Jones took Year 4 into Ghyll Field to enjoy mindfulness techniques and create outdoor art.

MATHS To help the class deepen their understanding of subtraction, they took on the roles of ‘teacher’ ‘and ‘student’. The ‘teachers’ could only ask questions e.g. ‘Which number does frog hop to first?’ and the ‘students’ had to complete the written calculations. Our ‘teachers’ were fantastic at spotting their ‘students’ misconceptions and mistakes and gave plenty of useful advice to help them.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES AT INGLEBOROUGH HALL Adam Riaz and Mathilda Evans give their personal account of the Year 5 residential trip to Ingleborough Hall.

“Our residential trip to Ingleborough was really exciting. I felt excited because I had been there before.

When we got there, we got told our dorms and we also were told what activities we were doing. We were all doing problem solving on the ginormous lawn. One of our activities was called the ‘Sheep and Shepherd’.

We had to be sheep and one person was a shepherd. The shepherd used a ball and tried to get the sheep in a pen. I learnt that you can use your ears to communicate.

Next, we went caving, there were four different tunnels. I really enjoyed them!”

Everyone arrived at school and we all set off in the minibus to Ingleborough Hall. When we got there, we all brought our bags up to our rooms, then we went outside to do problem solving. It was fun.

The first activity was a gutter and a golf ball. Our team did quite well, then there was a Sheep and Shepherd game and a problem-solving picture, rope work and crate and plank.

My group went caving, this was my favourite activity. When we got there, we went down the cave, and there were challenges throughout the whole cave. The first challenge was the worm, where you had to wiggle through a small gap. The next challenge was the snake where we had to slither like a snake. Mr Roe got stuck, I had to push him! The next one was the penguin, you had to waddle, and at the end there was a slide. The challenge was the tiger, where we had to crawl further on through the cave.

We all sat down and turned off our torches, it was pitch black. When we got out of the cave, we were freezing and wet.

After tea we went outside and had a campfire and toasted marshmallows.

We all sang a song. Then we went upstairs to bed.

In the morning, we went to get breakfast and I had a lot to fill me up for all the activities. After we had breakfast we went geocaching. Next, we went orienteering. Me and Max won the whole thing, but it was very tiring doing all that running. After that we still had a bit of time, so we got into groups and made dens. Our den was small and there was just enough room for someone to sit down.

After that, we loaded our bags into the bus and we said our goodbyes. We all set off back to school just in time for lunch.

When we arrived, I was really looking forward to the trip. I enjoyed the caving the most because I love to be challenged. I found orienteering very tricky because we have to be very quick to win. I learnt that I need to consider others more than myself. I would definitely go on this trip again because it was so much fun but next time, I would like to do some climbing.

SCIENCE Our scientists were curious to learn about the different stages of digestion.

We have been learning about temperatures in our science lessons. The children used different types of thermometers to explore hot and cold items inside and outside the classroom, and worked with partners to test their own temperatures.

LANGUAGES

ART As part of their art lessons, Year 5 have been looking at the work of Gaudi and have found natural forms to be a good source of inspiration for their work with clay.

We were so excited when the children at the school we had written to in France, St Nazaire, had written back to us. Everyone was matched up with one or even two pen pals. Wouldn’t it be fabulous if some of our pupils find a pen pal for life through this project?

Our budding artists walked up to the Chapel where they produced some excellent observational drawings.

We have been looking at famous artists as part of the children’s independent research task. Mrs McGoldrick joined us when we shared our work and provided some great feedback.

RESIDENTIAL WEEK This year, our Year 6 pupils enjoyed a fantastic week at the magnificent Caythorpe Court in Lincolnshire, a PGL Outdoor Activity Centre.

The children planned and riskassessed their own experience and chose activities that included raft building, rifle shooting and quad

biking. The big difference this year was that the accommodation was in tents! Although apprehensive about this, the children really enjoyed the

freedom this offered. Relaxing, playing games and running around in the evening sunshine made some of the best memories of their week.

The week of adrenaline activities started as soon as we arrived with a high-altitude climb. This set the tone for the week with the children embracing the challenge and overcoming their fears. Chloe’s determination on the leap of faith

brought a lump to the throat. With very wobbly legs, she gritted her teeth and jumped. The fun never stopped!

Canoeing, high ropes, a blindfolded trail and challenge courses, every two hours a new experience and a new challenge.

Jamie demonstrated his ‘Evel Knievel’ skills on the quad track with a huge smile on his face, getting faster and faster until the inevitable crash into the tyres happened, still laughing and smiling as the staff hauled him back onto the track.

A highlight of the week was the raft building activity with nearly an hour of constant giggling, as Mr Roe clambered on, and then very quickly off, and the children struggled to stay on, inevitably succumbing to a cold bath.

Overall it was a fantastic week of sharing new experiences, supporting each other to overcome fears and enjoying the bond that the children had developed together over their time at Giggleswick. A fitting end to the junior school journey!

VICTORIAN LIFE We had a fascinating trip to the Thackray Museum where we learned all about the Victorian era. The pupils travelled back in time and experienced a Victorian classroom, visited a Victorian street and learnt about the awful conditions that families lived in. Our pupils were also shocked by the dangerous conditions in which children worked.

PSHE Year 6 enjoyed learning about the world of work, which included a visit from Clare Penter who came to talk to us about her job as a vet.

CRUCIAL CREW Crucial Crew Day is a multi-agency event organised for schools by the police and supported by the fire service. The aim of the day was to raise awareness of safety issues and our pupils took part in workshops to understand more about internet safety, drugs and alcohol awareness and anti-social behaviour. They also had ‘hands on’ experience of what to do if they discover a fire in the home and how to make an emergency call.

HISTORY DETECTIVES Mrs Bagot took Year 6 to Hawes Countryside Museum to learn about the lives of Yorkshire families in the past. They handled a variety of artefacts and looked at documents during the workshop, becoming history detectives for the afternoon.

SCIENCE

ART Year 6 have been busy creating test pieces for their Indian wall-hanging project.

They experimented with the batik process to inform the development of their work.

HUNTER HALL MATHS CHALLENGE During the summer term, Martha, Cicely and Adam took part in a Maths competition hosted by Hunter Hall.

There were four rounds involving problem solving, word challenges and number crunching within timed conditions. The children performed well, and this year the competition was close. Giggleswick finished third out of six teams and were not far off the top place!

We looked at bread mould under the microscope during our science lesson on microbes.

Can you recognise these three brave climbers? The climbing club hit new heights when they took on Mrs Wulf’s challenge of climbing blindfolded! This activity heightens your senses and requires good, clear communication from your belayer.

FOREST CLUB The children enjoyed making themselves a comfy bed complete with a canopy in Forest Club.

Everyone taking part in the Gardening Club has been very busy growing seeds, planting out different vegetables and improving the area around the greenhouse.

STAFF LEAVERS Liobhan Boylan We were delighted for Mrs Wells that she was having a baby, but it did pose a tough challenge to find some to cover her maternity leave. We were therefore incredibly lucky to find Liobhan Boylan after a great deal of searching.

Liobhan is one of the calmest, easygoing teachers you could ever meet. Despite last minute setbacks, Liobhan’s, ‘it’ll all be alright’ positive attitude in the face of adversity was incredible. This was particularly evident in her leading the direction of our production, ‘Ye-Ha!’ in the Spring Term, which was a huge success.

Our school choir has also not only produced singing to a high quality, but also with a real passion thanks to Liobhan.

Highlights included the harmonisations in the choir’s performance of ‘Happy’

by Pharrell Williams, and our group performance of ‘Hallejuah’. Even our youngest ones have enjoyed performing such classics as ‘The Silly Song’, and ‘Well I Never’ in the Nativity featuring a cast of aliens!

I think everyone had a lump in their throat watching Year 1 and 2 perform ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ followed by our Reception and Year 6 performance of ‘ A Million Reasons’ back in March. Liobhan will be missed by us all and we thank her for everything she has done in developing the Performing Arts at the junior school.

Matthew Standon & Courtney Powell The school has welcomed gappies from All Saints’ College in Queensland, Australia for many years, and this year Matthew and Courtney were two were one of the best we have ever had.

Both very quickly adapted to being in positions of responsibility and we were amazed by their calm approach, initiative and dependability. It felt as if we had extra teachers in the school, which was a huge benefit to both staff and pupils.

Matthew and Courtney played a crucial role in supporting the boarders in Catteral House, leading activities and themed evenings through the year. Sport was another area that they enjoyed, with Matthew refereeing fixtures and learning how to umpire cricket. Courtney’s skills at hockey and netball also boosted our teams.

Philippa Walton We would also like to acknowledge the huge contribution that Philippa Walton has made to the junior school over the course of the year, covering for Sian Driver in the school office.

Philippa was literally thrown in at the deep end, including supporting the school through its inspection within a couple of months of arriving. Philippa very quickly got to grips with the many tasks involved in the role and the array of information that was needed to be at her fingertips to help our parents, pupils and staff. We were all hugely grateful for her wonderful support.

As always, it was sad to see our gappies leave us in December but we hope they left with lots of fond memories of their time at Giggleswick.
