"SurRounding", is discussing how public housing, gentrification and real residents’ lives can be embodied in living space.

[ Issue : Gentrification ] It all started with my research on the term of gentrification. It can be seen from the American system that in the process of gentrification, the American national house has completed its improvement of the living quality and population quality through the replacement of the place’s population and a rapid large-scale spatial update.

In the process of conducting this research, I gradually began to become interested in public housing in Taiwan.

In the development of Taiwan’s gentrification, buildings are newly built-in response to the world’s trends, residents are screened through free economics to determine whether they can live or not.

And there’s my question, is there a better option to change the living quality of place except for getting through the pattern of large-scale demolition, construction of standardized buildings and population replacement?

[ Site : HuaJiang National Housing ] Wanhua District retains the original faith factors and unique life patterns of the city, which has shaped many public houses scattered after 1976.

Among these public houses, the Huajiang national housing is placed at the junction of urban development and changes. The primary object of development and renewal is also the reason why I finally chose Huajiang as my site.

Specifically, how could the state of life reflect in Huajiang national housing?

"After these studies, I realized that gentrification based on long-term evolution and rich historical stacking. These had become the basic conditions when I was looking for site, in order to look for the possibilities and potentials . "

From the analysis of Wanhua’s central area, we can find that Wanhua’s daily life is closely related to religion whether it is a tourist or a resident. We can also be discovered from scattered temples, the density of small temples around the Huajiang national housing is larger than that in tourist areas. The scope of people’s activities are effected by Huajiang roundabout, which has shaped a good field for new designs. ⑪

[ Into Design : StairCase ] In the Huajiang national housing, the particularity of daily life can be roughly divided into several forms.

The first is the unique bridge connection system.

The second is the surrounding atrium, which contains the largest roundabout in the Huajiang national housing, the courtyard formed between buildings and buildings, as well as the inner courtyard between the third and fourth floors.

The third is the external open space are connected with the belief space.

The fourth is the Huajiang architectures’ high-density of extension.

The fifth, one of the most important and most special is the setting of the stairwell, the stairwell of Huajiang is public through the first and second floors. It also connected to the corridor on the second floor, to the atrium space on the third and fourth floors, and then deep into the residential unit.

[ Into Design : Stratdgies ] In the design strategy, I describe the current situation as a sectional view, and then examine how to improve its quality, but at the same time retain its particularity; I designed it through several means: 1. Connect the atrium space to achieve different functions, 2. Extend the openness and connectivity of the bridge to other floors, 3. The existing extensions are a livelihood requirement, which should be internalized into the design, 4. The open space that exists on the first and second floors of Huajiang, including faith factors, should be lifted to higher floors to provide the users’ need, 5. At the ground level, in response to urban-scale development and expansion, the open space and the city must be planned together.

Through these means, I derived a new form of composite staircase.

As shown by the plan, section and the elevation, the division of the facade is to distinguish the spatial intentions and show the structure of the entire Huajiang national housing itself.

Then, what I was thinking about was that the next renewal development would return to the general public house renewal method, that is, talking about residential units. I took the renewed residential unit as an element, based on the spatial context and form of the entire Huajiang house, redesign the possible unit structure of a public house building, and develop a new compound form from it.

Take the stairwell as the main body, according to its serviceable objects and usage needs, form a 3 by 3 unit, and then copy it into a 3 by 5, 5 by 5 appearance. The final appearance of the building placed in the Huajiang area is as shown in the plan.

[ Overall : Plan, Elevation and Section ] According to the previous analysis, the northeast is approaching commercial expansion, and the southwest is connected to the residential area. In the process of converting commerce into residential buildings, a triangle belt is used as a revolving and connected to new buildings.

It can be seen in the design that the stairwell is inserted into the building as a plug-in.

In this way, the quality of life of public houses is improved, and through this step, the pace and method of building renewal are changed to form a new architectural form.

I used the public housing development that I talked about at the beginning as the basis for classification and evolution, and proceeded with classification and when through disassembly and reconstruction.

All of these is to gradually explaining the issues raised at the beginning, and updating them while retaining them.
