Dear Friends, Every season starts the same way for me: in a room, alone, listening. Before an artist ever steps onto our stage, I’m at my desk with headphones on, working through hundreds of hours of music, comedy, and performance, trying to find the artists that belong here. Not just talented, not just available, but also right for this stage, this community, this season. Season 21 is the result of that search. It’s Cyrille Aimée’s Caribbean-inflected jazz, The Blind Boys of Alabama’s gospel celebration of Stevie Wonder, returning artist Willie Nile’s rock and roll grit, the unrepeatable theater of The Unwitting Magician in the Loft. These artists don’t have much in common on paper, but once they’re in front of a SOPAC audience they all do the same thing, they make you forget you were going to check your phone. I try not to book a “safe” season. Some of these names you’ll know. Some you won’t, and that’s OK. A few of my favorite nights here started with someone in the audience who’d never heard of the artist and left talking about them for a week. So here’s my ask: Be Here. Come for the artist you already love. Come for the one you’ve never heard of. Bring someone who’s never been. That’s really the whole pitch. With gratitude,
Dan Stankus Director of Programming, SOPAC
SOPAC | SEPTEMBER – DECEMBER 2026 SCHEDULE
Dear Friends, After having served continually on SOPAC’s Board for many years, what still stands out is that SOPAC remains true to its founding promise after two decades—a vibrant gathering place for the performing arts and our community. SOPAC fulfills that promise by bringing people together for unforgettable live experiences and uplifting the creative heartbeat of South Orange and Maplewood and beyond. None of this happens in a vacuum. It continues because you bought a ticket, made a donation, volunteered to usher, and/or brought your family to a Saturday performance. You are the reason SOPAC continues to thrive. We need you! We need you to Be Here with us. As we look to the season ahead, I invite you to Be Here with us: •
Be Here in the Theater: Experience world-class live musical performances together.
•
Be Here in the Gallery: Discover local artists at the Herb & Milly Iris Gallery.
•
Be Here for the Next Generation: Support our Arts in Education programs reaching students across New Jersey.
On behalf of the entire Board, thank you for making SOPAC what it is today. I look forward to greeting you all at SOPAC very soon. Sincerely,
Marc Chalom Chair of the Board
