Dear Friends, oh, the glory days of spring and summer are with us! when a walk outside brings the warmth of the sun into your entire being and makes you glad to be alive. we gather with family and friends for picnics, holidays at the park and beach, parties on the patio. The coming together with your “tribe” brings joy and solidifies the bonds of family and friends like none other. It’s the same for me as we welcome you to SoPAc to hear great musicians, see beautiful dance, laugh with irreverent comedians and more. we are with our “tribe” and connecting with those who love the art on the stage as we do. we unite through these experiences as we all feel the joy engendered in those special moments. we are in the final process of completing a new three-year strategic plan for SoPAc. one of the things that continually rose to the surface during the past nine months was the concept of community — our tribe — and our desire to connect more deeply with all of you. we will be letting you know more about this strategic plan in the next few months, but I can share with you that community engagement is at the top of our planning and core values. we desire to expand our reach and relevancy to a broader and more diverse community, knowing that reflecting and serving that community in a more comprehensive way will enrich all of us. we are excited and energized by the possibilities. As always, I wish every one of you more joy, more connection, more arts!

There is a whole lot of positive at SoPAc. At the top of the list is the tireless work of our staff behind our beloved leader executive Director Dee Billia. Dee has led SoPAc with a firm and compassionate hand. She has been the rudder that has stabilized the organization during the turbulent times of coVID and the aftermath of Tropical Storm Ida. The entire Board and SoPAc family are indebted to Dee and her staff who continue to work tirelessly. In her message in this program, Dee talks about our new strategic plan which goes into effect this summer. The Board and Staff have been working together to define and crystalize the pillars that will guide us over the next several years. These pillars are our North Star. you will be hearing much more about the plan as we finalize it. Finally, and most importantly, I want to thank you for your continued support of your favorite small performing arts center in New Jersey six years in a row. we are grateful to you. we welcome you to SoPAc with open arms.

ZoSo — The ultimate led Zeppelin experience MAy 20
Zoso’s live shows are not about simply playing the right notes, they are about aura and feeling, harkening back to the unique atmosphere led Zeppelin created. It’s in the way they play: each band member’s mastery of authentic vintage instruments coupled with spot-on vocals, guitar, bass, drums and keyboards, their compelling stage persona, and distinct led Zeppelin sound, with astounding visual imagery recreates the music, magic and mystery of a Zeppelin concert. The impact is so powerful that band members constantly hear from young rockers that they were the catalyst behind turning them into new, die-hard Zeppelin fans. Their passion, musical ability, showmanship, and precise attention to detail earned them critical acclaim, name recognition and a loyal national following. The Los Angeles Times hailed the group as being “head and shoulders above all other Zeppelin tributes,” and the Chicago Sun-Times declared Zoso is “the closest to the original of any tribute.”
Zoso – The ultimate led Zeppelin experience formed in 1995 to perform the most accurate and captivating led Zeppelin live show since the real thing. For Zoso, it’s much more than just being a tribute. It’s about touching a golden era in music. Zoso embodies Jimmy Page, robert Plant, John Bonham and John Paul Jones in their spirit, tightly-wound talent and authenticity. each band member has been carefully selected to portray both the appearance and playing styles of their led Zeppelin counterparts. In nearly thirty years of touring, they have perfected their art. As one of the longest tenured Zeppelin tributes, Zoso’s thousands of shows around the world, including slots at major festivals, such as Bonnaroo and rib America Fest, have established them as the most traveled and successful band in the market.

SATurDAy, MAy 21 latin music icon eddie Palmieri is also known as the “madman of Salsa.” The 85-year-old ten-time Grammy winner and NeA Jazz master has been tickling the ivories and composing electrifying music for over six Knowndecades.asone of the finest pianists, Palmieri is a bandleader, arranger and composer of Salsa and latin Jazz. his playing skillfully fuses the rhythm of his Puerto rican heritage with the complexity of his Jazz influences: Thelonious monk, herbie hancock, mccoy Tyner as well as his older brother, charlie Palmieri. Born in Spanish harlem and raised in the Bronx, Palmieri learned to play the piano at an early age. At 13, he joined his uncle’s orchestra, playing Palmieri’stimbales.professional career as a pianist took off with various bands in the early 1950s including eddie Forrester, Johnny Segui’s and the popular Tito rodriguez orchestra. In 1961, Palmieri formed his own band, la Perfecta, which featured an unconventional front line of trombones rather than the trumpets customary in latin orchestras. This created an innovative sound that mixed American Jazz into Afro-caribbean rhythms, surprising critics and fans alike. Palmieri perfected his arranging skills in the 1970s releasing several impressive recordings. his unconventional style would once again surprise critics and fans with the 1970 release entitled “harlem river Drive.” This recording was the first to merge what were categorized as “Black” and “latin” music into a free-form sound that encompassed elements of Salsa, Funk, Soul and Jazz.

If you missed led Zeppelin live in the 70s or are looking to relive the “hammer of the Gods” phenomenon, you must experience what The St. Petersburg Times calls “the most exacting of the Zeppelin tribute bands in existence.” Zoso consists of: matt Jernigan (robert Plant), John mcDaniel (Jimmy Page), Adam Sandling (John Paul Jones) and Bevan Davies (John Bonham).
eddie Palmieri latin Jazz Band
In 1975, Palmieri won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best latin recording for The Sun of Latin Music (he’s won ten Grammy Awards to date), including two for his influential recording with Tito Puente, Obra Maestra/Masterpiece. recognizing Palmieri as an American icon, the Smithsonian’s National museum of American history recorded two of Palmieri’s performances for its archives in 1988. In addition to the Grammys, Palmieri has received numerous honors: eubie Blake Award; most exciting latin Performance, presented by the BBc in london; yale university’s chubb Fellowship, usually reserved for international heads of state, but given to Palmieri in recognition of his work building communities through music; harlem renaissance Award; Jay mcShann lifetime Achievement Award, induction into the oklahoma Jazz hall of Fame. In 2009, the library of congress added Palmieri’s composition “Azucar Pa’ Ti” to the National recording registry, which at the time only included 300 compositions documenting the history of all of recorded music history in the u.S. with his widely popular eight-and-a-half minute “Azucar Pa’ Ti” Palmieri changed the format of the recording industry, breaking the previously imposed three-and-a-half-minute barrier. In 2013, eddie Palmieri was awarded the coveted Jazz master award by the National endowment of the Arts (NeA) in addition to a lifetime Achievement Award by the latin Academy of recording Arts & Sciences. Friends Anders osborne and Jackie Greene are gifted as both singer-songwriters and guitarists.
osborne has been called “the poet laureate of louisiana’s fertile roots music scene,” by Guitar Player. Jackie Greene has been praised for his “honeyed tenor” by Rolling Stone. The outlet also named him among “the most notable guitarists from the next generation of six-string Together, legends.” they create an evening of old-fashioned tune trading.
Anders osborne and Jackie Greene
osborne is a true musical treasure, between the potency of his richly detailed songwriting, his intensely emotional, soulful vocals and his piercing, expert guitar work. he is among the most original and visionary musicians writing and performing today. New orleans’ Gambit Weekly has honored osborne as the entertainer of The year. OffBeat named him the crescent city’s Best Guitarist for three years in a row, and the Best Songwriter for two straight years. Jambands.com said, “osborne finds a striking balance of muscle and grace that allows for the smaller moments of quiet to be just as resounding as the sonic booms.” And USA Today has praised his music saying, “the relentless approach amplifies the anguished lyrics, which appear to be about the death of a loved one or a relationship torn asunder or perhaps a spiritual crisis.” he has toured non-stop, either with his own band, as a solo artist, or as a guest with his countless musical admirers, including Toots and The maytals, Stanton moore, Derek Trucks, warren haynes, Keb mo, The
Grateful Dead’s Phil lesh, Jackie Greene and Karl Denson’s Tiny universe. he’s produced and played on critically acclaimed albums by Tab Benoit, Johnny Sansone and mike Zito. Greene has been chasing his muse ever since his teenage years, when he released his critically acclaimed independent debut, signed his first record deal and began a lifetime of touring that would see him supporting the likes of BB King, mark Knopfler, Susan Tedeschi, and Taj mahal, in addition to gracing festival stages from Bonnaroo to outside lands. The New York Times hailed his “spiritual balladry,” Bob weir anointed him the “cowboy poet” of Americana and Blues, and the San Francisco Chronicle raved that he has “a natural and intuitive connection with… just about any musical instrument.” while Greene’s songwriting chops were more than enough to place him in a league of his own (NPr‘s World Café raved that his “sound seems at once achingly intimate, surprisingly energetic and unburdened by adherence to genre”), Greene also emerged as a singular singer and guitarist. Between studio albums and his own tours, Greene took up prestigious gigs playing with Phil lesh & Friends, The Black crowes, levon helm, and Trigger hippy, his supergroup with Joan osborne. The music of Asheville, North carolina-based group Amanda Anne Platt & The honeycutters is lyrically driven. The band’s country roots music often inspires introspection, whether it be about life on the road, heartache or hope. Platt has a knack for accessing a deep well of emotion and applying it to her story-telling.

Jon is one of the best comedy writers—tight, sharp and hilarious. he alone would be enough to build the show around, but we have more! usama Siddiquee – you might recognize usama Siddiquee from BeT, mTV, Bravo or “America’s Got Talent,” where he famously got into it with judge heidi Klum. usama is a force of nature on stage. his writing and stage presence are both on point. he has an impish side that likes to cause a little trouble.
Jessica Kirson – And last, but far from least, we have South orange native Jessica Kirson. you may have seen her during one of her many appearances on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” buying dinner at Ashley marketplace on South orange Avenue, or on her one-hour comedy central special “Bill Burr Presents Jessica Kirson: Talking to myself.” She is a comedy tornado that rips through the room leaving everyone in hysterics. She has played the mainstage at SoPAc before and we are beyond lucky to have her again.
WEDnESDAy, JunE 1 celebrate the one-year anniversary of this series with a special show on the SoPAc mainstage. max weinberg’s Jukebox
THurSDAy, JunE 9

“what’s a jukebox?” asks max weinberg. “you put the nickels in, you get the song you want. These are the songs that I grew up with, that I learned how to play the drums from listening to.” rock-and-roll hall of Fame Drummer and South orange native max weinberg brings his interactive concert experience to the SoPAc stage. During the show, weinberg asks the audience to create the set list, in real-time. Audiences choose songs from the glory days of rock and roll — everything from the Beatles to the Stones to Bruce and The e Street Band. Performing hundreds of shows, max weinberg’s Jukebox continues to barnstorm the country. Audiences have thoroughly embraced the idea of picking and calling out the songs the band plays. As one fan said, “It’s not a concert — it’s a party!” here’s what marc Steczyk, director of the lincoln Amphitheater, in Indiana, had to say: “max weinberg’s Jukebox was one of the most interactive, energetic performances that we’ve ever had at the lincoln Amphitheater! max, literally, leaves the stage to be amongst the crowd — his fans — and lets them pick the set list from a scrolling list of 300+ songs…and they play it…on the spot…spot on!” weinberg is the longtime drummer for Bruce Springsteen’s e Street Band. It’s no surprise that The Boss would have only positive things to say about weinberg. In Springsteen’s 2016 autobiography Born to Run, he writes the following: “max ‘the mighty max’ weinberg. A bundle of drive, neurosis and wily suburban street smarts, and source of great humor, max found a place where Bernard Purdie, Buddy rich and Keith moon intersected and made it his own. The soul of dedication and commitment, each night in the midst of the continuous hurricane our sets are designed to be, the sheer physical pressure of three hours of nonstop, steamrolling rock music lies upon his shoulders more heavily than anyone else’s. onstage, max goes beyond listenin to what I’m saying, signaling; he ‘hears’ what I’m thinking, feeling. he anticipates my thoughts as they come rolling full bore toward the drum riser.”
Since she broke through 25 years ago with the multi-platinum Relish and its touchstone mega-smash “one of us,” the seven-time Grammy nominee has never played it safe. osborne has followed her restless musical heart, exploring a diverse range of genres: Pop rock, Soul, r&B, Blues, roots rock, Gospel, Funk and country. osborne also produced Trouble and Strife, primarily recorded in her basement studio in Brooklyn, and released the album on the label she founded in 1991, womanly hips.
21 Joan osborne
Tackling serious subject matter in her writing while crafting music to “uplift,” osborne assembled “a great live band” (including several musicians who played on her acclaimed last album, Songs of Bob Dylan): guitarists Jack Petruzzelli, Nels cline, and Andrew carillo, keyboardist Keith cotton, bassist richard hammond and drummer Aaron comess. For vocal harmonies, she enlisted exquisite vocalists catherine russell, Ada Dyer, martha redbone and Audrey martells, whom she’s “had the great privilege to work with over many years.” The result is a Trojan horse of a record — music that is energizing, melodic, and hummable, with lyrics that call out the corrupt, the despicable and the destructive.
It’s been quite the journey since the woman AllMusic.com declared “the most gifted vocalist of her generation” moved from small-town Kentucky to attend Nyu film school in the 1980s. osborne’s astounding voice drew attention when she joined the fun at open mic nights in downtown clubs, which eventually led to 1995’s Relish — “that rare breed of album where critical consensus, popular approval and enduring appeal unite,” according to American Songwriter. Since then, she’s performed with motown’s revered rhythm section the Funk Brothers and toured with the Dead (where she first met and sang with Dylan). She’s harmonized with Stevie wonder at the rock and roll hall of Fame, duetted with luciano Pavarotti, and co-headlined a tour with the legendary mavis Staples.
FriDAy, JunE 10 on her tenth studio album, Trouble and Strife, Joan osborne issued a clarion call. with stunning vocals, a diverse range of sonics, and incisive lyrics, this deeply engaging collection of new original songs is her response to “the crazy, chaotic times we’re living in,” she says, and “a recognition of the important role music has to play in this moment. music has a unique ability to re-energize people and allow us to continue to hang on to that sense of joy of being alive.”
Triple threat trailblazer Bria Skonberg is a force to be reckoned with. As Vanity Fair puts it, “[she’s] a millennial shaking up the Jazz world.” This multi award-winning trumpeter, singer and composer combines her signature sound of fiery horn playing and smoky vocals. She blends Jazz, Blues and beyond with storytelling and adventurous concoctions of classics and soulful originals. “I play Jazz because it’s the closest I can get to flying…spreading joy, relating the human experience, and putting good into the world to counteract the negative,” says Skonberg. “I want to make music that makes people feel, and think.”
Bria
“I feel like music has this important job to do right now,” osborne says. “Part of that job is to help imagine a better future — and to hang on to hope. I want to play for people and get them up on their feet and dancing. To let music do that thing it does — bring joy and energy because we really need that right now.” with Trouble and Strife, she intends to do just that.
Born in canada and now residing in New york city, Bria has been a featured artist at hundreds of festivals and stages, including New orleans Jazz & heritage, Kobe, monterey, Breda, Newport and montreal Jazz Festivals.
Described as “one of the most versatile and imposing musicians of her generation” (Wall Street Journal), she has performed with Jon Batiste, wycliffe Gordon, Stephane wrembel, Steven Bernstein, u2 & Sun ra Arkestra, The American Pops and Vancouver Symphony orchestras, The Blacksmiths “we Insist” Band, and once sang the “Star Spangled Banner” at madison Square Garden for a Ny rangers game. A threetime Juno Award Nominee, Skonberg’s debut lP won for Best Jazz Vocal Album and made the Top 5 on Billboard jazz charts. The “shining hope of hot Jazz” (The New York Times) has been at the forefront of a revival of classic American music as both a performer and Theeducator.daughter of teachers, Skonberg is passionate about education and the learning experience. She was introduced to jazz by a spirited public school band program and local festival in her hometown of chilliwack.

Jesse Tempestcook:Tour II
23
FriDAy, JunE 17 Jesse cook composed his first album, Tempest, over 25 years ago. Jesse could not imagine that such a humble recording, in which he played all the instruments, would spark into a music legacy with thousands of concerts performed around the world, over 2 million albums sold, 5 PBS TV specials, and tens of millions of content views and streams across the internet. his career has brought this canadian guitarist multiple accolades including a coveted Acoustic Guitar Magazine Player’s choice Silver Award, eleven Juno Award nominations (he won for 2001’s Free Fall), a Gemini Award and, most impressively, ten platinum and gold studio “Ifalbums.youhad asked me at age 22, I would have said that I would never, never make music for the public,” cook says. “I would have told you that the public is much too fickle — they may love you one minute and forget you the next. well, it turns out I did the thing I said I’d never do, and somehow it’s worked out.” That’s an understatement. Since launching his career in 1995, cook has blazed an incredible trail. Along with being a global-guitar virtuoso, he’s
24 honed his skills as a composer, producer, arranger, performer and, more recently, filmmaker and cultural ambassador. As a child he was introduced to Flamenco at his father’s house in the camargue region of southern France. his neighbor happened to be Nico reyes, guitarist for The Gypsy Kings. meanwhile his mother, enrolled him in Toronto’s prestigious eli Kassner Guitar Academy. he set his sights on a career as a composer. That was until an ontario cable TV company aired his music on the listings channel. “Their switchboard got flooded with calls,” he recalls. This proved to be a critical turning point leading cook to self-produce Tempest at home using an eight-track recorder and one microphone. Then he delivered the initial run of 1,000 cDs from the plant to the distributor in his car. canadian television appearances followed and so too did important gigs in the uS. If he must point to one it was the 1995 catalina Jazz Festival where his playing earned a 10-minute standing ovation and sparked mob scenes — “It was like being The Beatles,” he marvels. In Poland, his 2004 live album Montreal took the country by storm. In India, he gained fame after one of his songs was used in a major Bollywood movie. In Iraq, his instrumentals score the nightly news. elsewhere, they’ve accompanied gymnastics and skating routines at the olympics. It’s no wonder cook jokes that his music “has had a way more interesting life” than he’s had. But lately, that international appeal — reflected in a compositional style that mixes Flamenco with everything from classical and Jazz to Zydeco, Blues and Brazilian Samba — has become something he takes more seriously. “If music can come from around the world and interconnect so beautifully to create this beautiful tapestry, maybe there’s something that music can teach us.”

That third voice completed the underpinnings of one of the most influential bands of the 60s. within a few months, mcGuinn, clark & crosby asked conga player michael clarke to join them as a drummer. mandolin player chris hillman was tapped to be the bass player. During a Thanksgiving dinner the band settled on the name “Byrds.” columbia records signed the Byrds in January 1965 and released their number one hit, “mr. Tambourine man.” when mcGuinn disbanded the Byrds in 1973, he began his lifelong dream of a solo career inspired by Folk singer, Pete Seeger. This Grammy winning artist tours the world delighting audiences with the songs and stories from his long musical career.
