Hello, New Friends!

It is an absolute joy to meet you as SOPAC’s new Executive Director.

A common icebreaker is sharing “Two Truths and a Lie.” Since I’m the new person, here goes…

• I was born and raised in Independence, Missouri, birthplace of President Harry S. Truman.

• My undergraduate degree is in trombone performance from the New England Conservatory of Music.

• I sang as a backing vocalist for the band Pink Martini at The Hollywood Bowl.

Which do you think is my fib?

In all seriousness, to lead SOPAC is the opportunity of a lifetime, and exactly what I want to do at this point in my life and career — and exactly where I want to do it. I’m thrilled to make SOMA my home and to work my heart out for and with this community.

I’m inspired by SOPAC’s enterprising staff and Board, by the way that creativity is key to the civic strength of this community, and by the unique multi-use, multi-disciplinary profile of SOPAC — the Jennifer & Tony Leitner Performance Hall, the Loft, the Herb + Milly Iris Gallery, and the Village at SOPAC movie theaters — what a truly special place this is!

More than ever, people want to gather, connect and be entertained. Maybe you’re searching for personal inspiration and meaning. Perhaps you’re looking for a fun night out with family, friends or loved ones. You want to discover new artists or explore new stories and sounds — or all the above. My hope is that you choose SOPAC again and again as your favorite place for memorable experiences. Your presence, creativity and whole person are welcomed and celebrated here at SOPAC.

Dear SOPAC Patrons & Supporters, Welcome to SOPAC and this exciting performance.

After a way-too-long pandemic and flood hiatus, SOPAC is back with a full schedule of captivating and diverse performances — made possible through the thoughtful, hard work of our staff and support of loyal patrons, members and donors. And, I’m thrilled to welcome SOPAC’s new Executive Director Stephen Beaudoin.

You’re sitting in the Jennifer & Tony Leitner Performance Hall, our intimate, main theater. With only 439 seats, great sight lines, and extraordinary acoustics, we’re proud to boast there isn’t a bad seat in the house. It’s practically like seeing and hearing your favorite performer in your own living room. And, hundreds of artists who’ve performed at SOPAC tell us how much they enjoy entertaining our audiences in this wonderful setting.

SOPAC recently completed its new strategic plan to guide us over the next five years — with an updated Mission Statement: The South Orange Performing Arts Center offers audiences exhilarating and diverse arts entertainment in its intimate venue, serving as the cultural heartbeat of the greater South Orange/Maplewood region and contributing to the economic and social vibrancy of its highly diverse community.

This mission is supported by a compelling Vision Statement, Core Values and these Strategic Pillars:

• Curating transformational arts experiences for a dynamic and diverse community

• Building community and engaging audiences

• Ensuring long-term viability and sustainability

• Strengthening operations and impact across Board and staff

Together, our staff and Board strive to fulfill our mission while meeting our audience’s and community’s cultural arts needs.

Dance and music residencies are customized for each school to support district staff and create unique opportunities for students to work with and learn from professional artists.

The INSPIRED MINDS: Young Artist Exhibition allows Essex County high school students to undergo a professional experience, from application through exhibition and possible sale of their art in The Herb + Milly Iris Gallery.
