I look forward to learning more about you, and to all our adventures — together.
• My undergraduate degree is in trombone performance from the New England Conservatory of Music.

It is an absolute joy to meet you as SOPAC’s new Executive Director.

I’m inspired by SOPAC’s enterprising staff and Board, by the way that creativity is key to the civic strength of this community, and by the unique multi-use, multi-disciplinary profile of SOPAC — the Jennifer & Tony Leitner Performance Hall, the Loft, the Herb + Milly Iris Gallery, and the Village at SOPAC movie theaters — what a truly special place this is!
Maybe you’re searching for personal inspiration and meaning. Perhaps you’re looking for a fun night out with family, friends or loved ones. You want to discover new artists or explore new stories and sounds — or all the above.
Since I’m the new person, here goes…

A common icebreaker is sharing “Two Truths and a Lie.”
More than ever, people want to gather, connect and be entertained.
In all seriousness, to lead SOPAC is the opportunity of a lifetime, and exactly what I want to do at this point in my life and career — and exactly where I want to do it. I’m thrilled to make SOMA my home and to work my heart out for and with this community.
My hope is that you choose SOPAC again and again as your favorite place for memorable experiences. Your presence, creativity and whole person are welcomed and celebrated here at SOPAC. Please, connect with me in the lobby or online. You’ll never find out my answers to the icebreaker without asking me!

Peabo Bryson
Peabo Bryson has established a career as one of the premier male vocalists in contemporary music of the last quarter century. Possessing a beautifully rich, almost operatic voice, this two-time Grammy winner has survived and prospered despite the passage of time and changes in popular musical trends.
Bryson’s family instilled in him a love for music. “My mother was a serious music lover” says Bryson. Whenever there was somebody great in town, she’d drag us along to catch their act. I have seen most of the greats of that period — Sam Cooke, Little Richard and even Billie Holiday. Sam Cooke was a great influence on me. His voice had a pure quality — straight from-the-heart.”
It was two songs for Disney animated films that earned Bryson his two Grammys. The first was 1991’s “Beauty and the Beast” with international

Hamilton’s Netflix comedy special, Happy Face, has been reviewed as “the special you can’t watch enough times.” He’s been named one of Rolling Stone’s Five Comics to Watch and his recent appearances include The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and Conan, as well as opening spots for Jerry Seinfeld and Jim Gaffigan.
Ryan Hamilton is a comedian known for being delightfully funny. He’s notorious for his physical comedy— moving around the stage while acting out and mimicking those in his stories. His self-deprecating jokes are his trademark as is his wide smile and clean comedic style.
The New York Times says of Hamilton “[he’s] one of the most reliably funny regulars at the Comedy Cellar, an observational comic who often riffs on the absurdity of his own wholesomeness.”

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9
“It wasn’t a conscious decision I made,” said Hamilton about being a clean comedian in an interview with The Interrobang. “But I was always naturally drawn to comedians who fall into that camp. It kind of chooses you more than you choose it.”

9 pop singer Celine Dion, which was a #1 pop hit. The very next year, Bryson struck gold again receiving another Grammy for “A Whole New World (Aladdin’s Theme)” from Aladdin which he performed with Regina Belle.
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11
Maria Bamford is revered for her deeply personal and experimental comedy about mental illness. She starred in the surreal, semiautobiographical Netflix comedy series Lady Dynamite, about a comedian who suffers a nervous breakdown. Maria is often recognized for her prolific voiceover work, including characters on Big Mouth, BoJack Horseman, Summer Camp Island, Adventure Time, Talking Tom and Friends, Bob’s Burgers, Legend of Korra, Puss in Boots, CatDog and PBS’s Emmy-winning series Word Girl. She also stars as Tilly Mulch in Team Coco’s scripted podcast Frontier Tween. Maria played DeBrie Bardeaux on Netflix’s Arrested Development and recurred on the ABC hit series Fresh off the Boat. Maria’s late-night appearances include Conan, The Tonight Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Late Night with Seth Meyers. Stephen Colbert called her his womansheandcomedian“favoriteonearth”JuddApatowsaidis“thefunniestintheworld.”

George Porter Jr. & Runnin’ Pardners
Porter’s heavy pocket and fat notes formed the rubbery bass lines behind funk classics like their signature “Cissy Strut,” the now classic 1969 funk instrumental released as a single from their eponymous debut album. The Meters have been nominated four times for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (most recently in 2017) and were presented with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards in 2018.
David Broza & Trio Havana
Porter has accompanied the stage as a band member or special guest with the likes of David Byrne, Dead & Company, Jimmy Buffet, Warren Haynes, Widespread Panic, Tedeschi Trucks Band, John Scofield, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart and various members of Phish, to name a few.
10
George Porter Jr. is an award-winning bassist, songwriter and vocalist. He is a founding member of New Orleans’ seminal funk band, The Meters and widely recognized as one of the greatest bass players of all time.
Israel’s legendary singer-songwriter David Broza brings a unique Cuban twist to his hit songs through a collaboration with Trio Havana. Band members include: Manuel Alejandro Carro aka Mannya — Cuban-born singer-songwriter and master percussionist with a style firmly rooted in Latin Pop; Yuniel Jiminez “El Guajiro” — master tres guitar player from Santa Clara, Cuba; Jorge Bringas — renowned bassist from Havana, Cuba, who played previously with Albita Rodriguez and the late Celia FromCruz. his whirlwind fingerpicking to Flamenco percussion and rhythms to a signature rock and roll sound, David Broza’s charismatic and energetic performances have delighted audiences throughout the world. Raised in Israel, Spain, and England, Broza has performed worldwide since 1977 when his song “Yihye Tov” first hit the airwaves, promoting a message of peace.

The James Hunter Six
Edwards made her long-anticipated return to music with Total Freedom, her fifth studio album in August 2020. “I have this whole other experience now that grounded me and helped me rebuild my relationship with myself and writing music.”
Maren Morris, a longtime fan, invited her to Nashville for a songwriting session. Edwards accepted, and “Good Woman,” their collaboration, wound up on Morris’ 2019 album, GIRL. “It reminded me that writing and creating music is entirely my wheelhouse, and it was so easy to just jump back in,” she says.
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22
Kathleen Edwards
11
If you ask Kathleen Edwards, the best thing she ever did was quit. By 2014, the singer-songwriter had released four studio albums and amassed widespread critical acclaim, but she decided to put her guitar away. A running joke with bandmate Jim Bryson about opening a coffee shop and naming it “Quitters” became reality. For years, the only new music she heard was playing in the background while she served coffee. In 2018, she received an unexpected phone call that changed that.
Over the span of 30 years, James Hunter has worked on the railway, busked in the streets of London, played clubs and theaters all over the world, written scores of original songs and recorded some of the most honest Rhythm & Soul albums of the last two decades. In the early 90s, Van Morrison recruited Hunter to sing backup on the road touring as well as on two albums, A Night in San Francisco and Days Like This. In the years to follow, Hunter opened shows for Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Willie Nelson and Tom Petty and headlined clubs and theatres in England, Europe, Australia, and the United States. By 2006, Hunter was recognized with nominations for a Grammy (“Best Traditional Blues Album” for People Gonna Talk) and an American Music Award (“Best New/Emerging Artist”). He and his band then hit the road for a decade of extensive touring and recorded critically-acclaimed studio albums — The Hard Way, Minute by Minute, Hold On!, and Whatever it Takes. By 2016, MOJO magazine had crowned him “The United Kingdom’s Greatest Soul Singer.”

Billie & Blue Eyes presented by John Pizzarelli & Catherine Russell
ThE SongS of frank SinaTra and BilliE holiday
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24
John Pizzarelli, the Paterson-born, world-renowned guitarist and singer has been hailed by the Boston Globe for “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing Jazz.” The Toronto Star pegged him as “the genial genius of the guitar.” And the Seattle Times saluted him as “a rare entertainer of the old school.”
Pizzarelli has toured internationally, performing shows centered on Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mercer, Paul McCartney, Nat King Cole and more. In 2006, he introduced Dear Mr. Sinatra, a tribute album set to “Ol’ Blue Eyes,” featuring the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. The New York Times praised the recording for “exploding with enthusiasm and excitement.” Catherine Russell is a native New Yorker, born into musical royalty. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was a legendary pianist, composer, bandleader, and Louis Armstrong’s longtime musical director. Her mother, the late Carline Ray, was a pioneering vocalist, guitarist and bassist who performed with International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams and Sy Oliver. After graduating from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, she toured and recorded with Carrie Smith, Steely Dan, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, Levon Helm, Toshi Reagon and Rosanne Cash, among others, appearing on over 200 albums. Her seventh album Alone Together, was released in 2019 and earned Russell her second Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album. NPR has described Russell as, “a voice that wails like a horn and whispers like a snake in the garden of Eden.”

Delfeayo Marsalis Quintet
An acclaimed trombonist, composer, and producer, Delfeayo Marsalis has also dedicated his prolific career to music theatre and education. Along with the Marsalis family of musicians (father Ellis and brothers Branford, Wynton and Jason), the artist was destined for a life in music. At the age of 17, Marsalis began his career as a producer and has to date produced over 120 recordings garnering one Grammy award and several nominations. A New Orleans native, Marsalis has also toured internationally with Jazz legends such as Ray Charles, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, and Slide Hampton, as well as leading his own Whengroups.describing his shows in an interview with Cultural Attaché, Delfeayo explains, “My show is designed to please the crowds. Somebody said, ‘Hey, you got a feel-good band?’ And I said, ‘Why would you have any other kind of band?’”
