Since 1981, Musica Viva In Schools has provided quality live music to Australian schools, firmly cementing a position as one of the nation’s leading and most trusted music education providers. We believe that music plays a critical role in providing practical, diverse, and life-changing education. The Musica Viva In Schools program reaches Australian school children in all states and territories, giving them year-round access to the power and excitement of live music. In 2021, Musica Viva In Schools celebrates 40 years of making Australia a more musical place. From metropolitan schools in capital cities to remote schools in The Kimberley and Alice Springs, we are committed to enriching school communities with music. We do this by delivering live performances in schools and supporting teachers with the tools to teach music in their classrooms.

MUSICA VIVA IN SCHOOLS 2021 Musica Viva In Schools is an all-inclusive package that provides a year-round, engaging music program for teachers and students. Our comprehensive package includes:
1. Interactive, live music performance at your school Choose from 16 culturally and musically diverse ensembles with some of Australia’s best musicians. If we are unable to perform live at your school, you have the option of a live, interactive online concert. 2. Teaching and learning resources Access to the Musica Viva In Schools Online Classroom featuring: • Up to 10 weeks of curriculum-aligned lesson plans • Interactive content that brings the musicians into the classroom with instructional videos • Independent student learning journeys that can be accessed in school or at home 3. Online professional development and support Suitable for both music specialists and generalist teachers, our suite of accredited professional development (PD) includes: • Guided PD webinar with a Musica Viva educator and musician • Self-guided PD through the resources • Two new musician-led PD workshops with resources included (additional cost) • Teacher Support Forums Program Suitability Our program is suitable for students up to year 8. In the face of everchanging restrictions, our live, online concerts allow us to bring the same high-quality performances to your school, safely and remotely. Our online program puts creativity at the forefront, making it easier than ever for you to provide music education wherever your students may be. Everyone can share in the excitement of a live, interactive musical performance, whether at home or in the classroom. PROGRAM PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT In 2021, we are offering schools an expanded suite of online PD to bring you and your students closer to the music. Whether you engage with the option that best suits your needs or participate in all three, the choice is yours! You will receive access upon booking a program.
Guided PD Webinars Each session will cover a specific program and guide you through the teaching and learning resources. You will also have the unique opportunity to meet one of the musicians from the ensemble and ask any questions you might have, through live chat. Webinars will be held in Terms 1 & 2. Check the ensemble section in this brochure for dates. We strongly recommend booking early to avoid missing out on your ensemble’s webinar.
Self-Guided PD The teaching and learning resources include dedicated online PD material exploring your program’s music. This self-guided exploration of the resources is complete with multimedia content, extended explanations of the activities and reflective exercises to support critical and creative thinking in the classroom. Completing each of these programs and post-evaluation will contribute two hours of Registered PD, including 2 hours of NESA and TQI Registered Professional Development addressing 2.4.2*, 3.3.2 & 3.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW/ACT. Learning and Teacher Support Forums Our forums provide a collegial and collaborative platform for our national community to come together, support one another and share best practice for learning and teaching in music. NEW WORKSHOPS WITH OUR MUSICIANS ADD TO YOUR PROGRAM Designed to give you further tools and confidence to teach music, our new online workshops are hosted by Musica Viva In Schools musicians and come with curriculum-aligned online resources.
Workshop 1: MUSIC & CULTURE Tuesday 10 AUG, 5:30–7:30pm AEST Join Mara Kiek from Music in my Suitcase for an interactive workshop exploring ways to engage with different cultures in your local community through music. Discover strategies that foster connection and inclusivity through singing, playing and moving that can be integrated easily across the primary curriculum. The online resource will help you to develop the skills to celebrate cultural and linguistic diversity in your classroom. Workshop 2: COMPOSITION (MADE EASY) IN THE CLASSROOM Monday 18 OCT, 5:30–7:30pm AEDT With a strong focus on artistic spontaneity, Dr Robert Davidson from Taking Shape teaches composition in an extremely accessible way, beyond the boundaries of specific genres or styles. This engaging workshop will help you to inspire students to be creative and engage with music in new and exciting ways. The online resource will help you to explore improvisation and composition as a basis for creativity and self-expression. Pricing $30 per person per session (includes online resources). 12-WEEK MODERATED ONLINE COURSE MUSIC EDUCATION SKILLS FOR THE PRIMARY CLASSROOM Presented by Musica Viva In Schools & NSW Teachers Federation, Centre for Professional Learning
Do you want to build your confidence teaching music? Our accredited 14-hour online course is a general introduction to music education in the primary school, encouraging creativity and providing practical ideas for use in the classroom. The course is fully supervised and moderated by a course instructor who provides feedback and encouragement every step of the way. It is aimed at generalist classroom, pre-service and graduate teachers with minimal music teaching experience, who wish to build their skills and confidence. The course is run over a 12-week period, allowing for deep and immersive learning and engagement. It is curriculum-aligned and addresses AITSL’s Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, contributing 14 hours of Registered PD*.

DOCTOR STOVEPIPE GYPSY SWING, RAGTIME & HOT JAZZ Down a dusty road from the 1930s comes Doctor Stovepipe, a rollicking, old-time ensemble here to provide a dose of fun! Through guitar, bass, fiddle and sweet vocal harmonies, students explore how music has evolved and changed over time, plus create their own toe-tapping tunes for Doctor Stovepipe to perform in the show.

Rhythm Works are a dynamic percussion duo who show students how to create visual images through music – with lizards, waterfalls, road trains and carnivals. In this high-energy show, students are introduced to a range of instruments from African djembes to marimbas, electronic loop machines, Boomwhackers and wearable instruments made out of PVC pipe! Students are given the tools to create their own musical imagery in the classroom or at home.

While childhood games may just seem like pure fun, they are also an important record of our history. From spinning tops to string figures, Torres Strait ensemble Wyniss show how music, culture and history are passed on through generations. By comparing their own childhood games to those from the Torres Strait, students come to understand the importance of traditions, and to be thankful to those who teach them.
