W E L C O M E As a teenager, newly in love with classical music, I’d spend a tiny portion of my milk-run wages each month on a copy of 24 Hours (later Limelight), underlining each piece I wanted to hear, planning my weeks around these broadcasts. Later, with more money (though earned with less physical exertion), I’d do the same with other people’s season launches, writing in a diary the live performances I couldn’t possibly miss. Of course, these two behavioural patterns are connected; the child, after all, is father to the man. And now it’s my own seasons I happily anticipate. Any concert season tells a story, and the one Musica Viva Australia tells in 2022 is simple, if boldly told: it is a tale of creativity during adversity; of partnerships that span the country and the world; of resilience, communal experience and the sheer, astonishing joy of live performance. Come do your part, for music is meaningless without our beloved audiences. Once in a while a collaboration reaches the heart of why we make music. This Musica Viva Australia concert honours such a collaboration, built on the longstanding friendship between award-winning classical guitarist Karin Schaupp and the renowned Flinders Quartet. For this tour, composer Carl Vine has created a new work Endless to be premiered by Karin and the Flinders, commissioned by a longstanding Musica Viva Australia subscriber wishing to immortalise the joyous memory of her late daughter. Accompanying this celebration of life and music is Imogen Holst’s moving Phantasy Quartet; and Southern Cross Dreaming by Australia’s Richard Charlton. Deliciously contrasting works for guitar and strings from three very different Italians round out the program, ending with Boccherini’s fiery Fandango. This special program captures the spirit of works rarely heard but exceedingly inspiring – all carrying the passion, artistry and friendship that characterise Musica Viva Australia’s concerts.

VAN DIEMEN’S BAND Tasmanian Baroque ensemble Van Diemen’s Band invites you to explore the historic borderlands of Europe on their national tour with Musica Viva Australia. For centuries, generations of musicians wrote dances and masses, symphonies and quartets, as their homelands changed ownership under their feet. Or their nations remained steadfast, allowing the most magical cultural overlaps at the border fringes. Through composers such as Samuel Scheidt and Dietrich Becker, you will hear the trials of battle – loss, regret, resentment – and, at long last, healing. Listen to composers who were touched by the Thirty Years’ War within the Holy Roman Empire, their countries crumbling around them. 06
María Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir (Iceland) and Donald Nicolson (Australia) are living composers who will bring you closer to our time. Just as Van Diemen’s Band invites instrumental guests from across Australia’s state borders, these composers remind us how we’re still united through music – no matter what borders lie between us.

In 1741 J. S. Bach sketched a simple, almost transparent, aria that he then spun into thirty miraculous variations. In this concert Andrea Lam and Paul Grabowsky present their very different takes on the resultant work, the Goldberg Variations. Pianist Andrea Lam – who first performed with an orchestra at the age of thirteen, studied music at Yale, and whose praises have been sung by the Wall Street Journal – will play each note on the instrument where she earned her fame. These notes will then be twisted and turned into something completely different when pianist Paul Grabowsky performs his own variations. Expect nothing short of jazz improvisation on Bach’s centuries-old theme.

A W I N T E R ’ S In 1827 Franz Schubert composed an emotionally charged song cycle. Setting poems of the German writer Wilhelm Müller, Schubert created an emotional journey of a man trekking across frozen rivers and snowy landscapes, lamenting his lost love. It is indeed a winter’s journey (Winterreise), full of images and metaphors of love, loss, and nationhood. A Winter’s Journey is a new staging by Musica Viva Australia of Schubert’s iconic songs, bringing a very different winter into focus, set against a backdrop of Australian painter Fred Willliams’ vivid landscapes.
Acclaimed stage director Lindy Hume is our cartographer, mapping the terrain of heart and country for the gripping stage charisma of English tenor Allan Clayton and sensitive musicianship of Australian pianist Kate Golla. Videographer David Bergman provides the backdrop, bringing to life 24 Fred Williams paintings that match and contradict Müller’s poems and Schubert’s musical imagination, all in gorgeous larger-than-life imagery. This powerful artistic combination sets the perfect conditions to experience Schubert’s immortal masterpiece – songs of love and loss that still speak to us vividly, in this far distant time and place.

Comprised of three internationally acclaimed soloists, the Z.E.N. Trio have made their name through the BBC New Generation scheme, a Deutsche Grammophon recording, and countless acclaimed concerts. 12
Embarking on their first national tour, the Trio premiere a new work from Musica Viva Australia FutureMaker, Matt Laing, a composer of great virtuosity and originality. Other highlights include Arno Babajanian’s thrilling trio, and either Dvořák’s intoxicating ‘Dumky’, or Brahms’s gloriously passionate Trio No. 1, depending on which city you’re in.

Take an intriguing musical journey around the Mediterranean, with the brilliant Israeli mandolinist Avi Avital and the spectacular Italian cellist Giovanni Sollima as your guides! Touring for Musica Viva Australia, this concert is your passport to a rich musical landscape, covering four centuries of culture from opposite sides of the sea. These good mates will use words and music to share traditional Salento, Bulgarian, Turkish, Sephardic and Macedonian works. They’ll also 16
forge new traditions when Giovanni plays one of his own improvisations, followed by Tarantella orientale from composer Eliodoro Sollima. Nestled between these experiences will be a couple of Baroque sonatas (enter Italian legends Scarlatti and Castello), and a 17th-century canzona from Frescobaldi. So come along. Musica Viva Australia is thrilled to present the internationally acclaimed Signum Saxophone Quartet in their debut national tour.
In this ripper program, the Signums will be joined by Australian violinist Kristian Winther to premiere Jessica Wells’ new arrangement of Kurt Weill’s Violin Concerto: a daredevil work for the soloist, and showing off the myriad colours of the saxophones.
Having achieved cult status on instruments still rarely found in the concert hall, the group have become renowned for championing composers living and lost, while filling the world’s best venues.
With a meeting of top creative talents in a program spanning Bach to Gershwin, these concerts are like the best kind of musical fireworks – surprising, absorbing, and extraordinary. 19
