It has been my great pleasure over the past 25 years or so to share with you, and those who have gone before you, the sheer enjoyment provided to us by some of the finest musicians of the day. Now, under a new initiative, subscribers will have the chance to share this experience with their friends. This year if you subscribe to the complete series of concerts, that is both Series 1 and Series 2, you will be given the opportunity to invite, at no additional cost, a friend to one nominated concert during the year. When subscribing, please note on your acceptance your choice of bonus concert so we can make appropriate seating, ticketing and catering arrangements for your guest. Your guest will, of course, be seated in the non-subscriber seating area of the auditorium, but there will be ample opportunity for you to get together over drinks both pre-concert and at Interval. Subscribing couples of course may invite two guests. What joy there is in sharing – be it a coffee, a meal or an evening of sublime music. Following the success of the 2019 Masterclass programme, in 2020 every concert will be accompanied on the same day by a Masterclass of 2 hours where our visiting artists will help develop aspiring young musicians in our local area. Subscribers are invited to attend these classes for free. There you will get to know the performers pre-concert and learn from them just what it takes to turn mere notes into living, breathing music. The insights thus shared by the musicians will doubtless heighten your own sensibilities and enjoyment of future concerts. No prior booking is required for the Masterclasses. Further details, including starting times, will be provided on our website, coffsmusicsociety.com.au, prior to each concert. Non-subscribers are also invited to attend these classes for a small fee of $10. 3
2020 SEASON SERIES 1 features faces familiar to our audience. Classical guitarist Johannes Möller makes a welcome return in March after several years’ absence. This year he will be playing in recital with fellow guitarist, Laura Fraticelli. With a change of our venue in May, we are thrilled to present singer/songwriter Lior in conjunction with Tinalley String Quartet at the St John’s Anglican Church. A highlight of this performance will be a reimagining for string quartet by Lior and Nigel Westlake of Sim Shalom from Westlake’s masterpiece ‘Compassion’. Lior’s live recording of this with the SSO won the 2014 ARIA Award for the best classical album. In 2019, Lior performed with the ACO on its ‘Luminous’ tour. Series 1 closes in July when Coffs Harbour raised, but for many years now Helsinki based, pianist Adam Herd who will again perform for us. Adam’s programmes are always thoughtful and innovative. This year he has chosen a leitmotif of birds and birdsong. SERIES 2 opens in September with our especially featured international artists, the Goldmund Quartet, best known to Australian audiences through their prize-winning performances in the 2018 Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. These brilliant young musicians from Germany are renowned for their more relaxed 21st century approach to performance. Rachael Beesley’s newly-formed Baroque Trio, in October, will take us back to the late 17th and early 18th centuries in a programme featuring that giant of the lute family, the theorbo. Only rarely are we fortunate enough to hear such period instruments. Another familiar face – the ever-popular cellist Umberto Clerici – will be joined by pianist Daniel de Borah in November to complete our felicitous 2020 programme with a recital featuring two of Mendelssohn’s finest pieces.

Through Nature to Eternity Singer/songwriter, Lior (Attar) is renowned for his beautiful voice and lyrics that radiate truth and sincerity, and as the world searches for compassion and understanding, the importance of music as a means of communication cannot be undervalued. In this musical narrative of love, loss and compassion, Tinalley and Lior perform a new song cycle by Melbourne composer, Ade Vincent. Three of Dvorák’s rousing love songs from his collection of Cypresses; echoes of love cherished, tormented and forgotten, are paired with Barber’s haunting ‘Adagio’ from his String Quartet Opus 11 and Lior’s achingly haunting ‘My Grandfather’. In a final quest for peace, Lior and Nigel Westlake reimagine Sim Shalom (Grant Peace) from ‘Compassion’, merging the symphonic world with that of the string quartet. Lior burst on to the Australian music scene in 2005 with his stunning debut album “Autumn Flow”. Recorded and released entirely independently, the album became one of the most successful independent debuts in Australian history with sales surpassing Platinum. Internationally acclaimed for its ‘addictive sound’ and ‘intuitive’ music making, Australia’s Tinalley String Quartet has established itself as one of the finest string quartets of its generation since forming in 2003. Awarded First Prize at the 9th Banff International String Quartet Competition and Grand Prize at the 2005 Australian Chamber Music Competition, the Quartet has performed throughout Europe, America, Canada and Australia to critical acclaim. Blackbird - Pianistic birdsong from Baroque to the Beatles Coffs Harbour raised, Adam is now based in Helsinki, Finland. Adam has travelled the world perfecting his pianism and piano repertoire. Adam’s love of the outdoors is heard in folk songs from the forests of Finland and semi-improvised impressions of Australian bush birds performed alongside compositions from more familiar composers. Germany’s youthful Goldmund Quartet began their career in stellar fashion, winning prizes at major events including the 2018 Wigmore Hall Competition and the 2018 Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, and bursting onto the concert scene with a jam-packed schedule of performances across Europe and, more recently, in Asia and North America. For their debut Australian tour, Goldmund offer some of the great masterpieces of the string quartet canon: Haydn and Schubert, set alongside a brand-new work, written for this tour by rising Australian composer Elizabeth Younan. Principal Cellist of the Sydney Symphony, Umberto Clerici, joins esteemed pianist Daniel de Borah for a special concert in Coffs Harbour. Umberto made his debut as a soloist with SSO in 2017 with Strauss’ Don Quixote and in 2018 the Brahms double concerto. He has recorded several CDs with concertos, solo and chamber music and, in 2017, he realized two new solo recordings for ABC Classic. Daniel de Borah is firmly established as one of Australia’s foremost musicians, consistently praised for the grace, finesse and imaginative intelligence of his performances. Festival appearances have included the Adelaide Festival, Musica Viva Festival, Huntington Estate Music Festival and the Australian Festival of Chamber Music.
