2010 OKLAHOMA TRACK & FIELD Dear Friends, I want to welcome you to another season with the University of Oklahoma Track & Field program. Entering my fifth year with the program, I look back at what we have accomplished and look forward with great promise as we continue to reach the standards of a powerful program. This is a place where the championships of the past are appreciated, but never do they obscure the pursuit of our next one. In 2009, six student-athletes received 13 All-America honors. Along with the All-America honors, four individual Big 12 titles and one NCAA Championship were won. Will Claye returns in 2010 looking to defend his NCAA triple jump crown while Ti’Anca Mock and Luke Bryant join Claye as returning Big 12 Champions.

Welcome from head coach Martin Smith
On the academic side, two of our student-athletes, Amy Backel and Mikaela Johansson, were named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Cross Country/Track & Field teams. The two were also named Academic All-District as well. Sixteen of our student-athletes were named to the Academic All-Big 12 Track and Field teams. OU led the Big 12 Conference with four athletes attaining perfect 4.0 grade point averages. Back on the home track, our program was also lauded for its hosting and running of the 2009 NCAA Midwest Regional. Over 40 programs and 800 student-athletes descended upon Norman and left with high regard for the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex and the Oklahoma program. The championship attitude from the track and field season carried over to this past fall where the men’s cross country team had one of its finest seasons in program history. The group finished the highest its ever finished in Big 12 history when it took third in the conference. Bill Kogel was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and joined Kevin Schwab and Rob Sorrell in earning All-Big 12 honors. The team then took a program high second in the NCAA Midwest Regional before finishing 12th at the NCAA Championships. We look forward to welcoming 40 incoming recruits to the Sooner track and field family for the upcoming 2010 season. The quality and number of this nationally-ranked recruiting class reflects not only the hard work, but more importantly, the commitment to success on the part of the entire track and field staff. I am confident that these incoming student-athletes will not only succeed in the athletic arena, but will leave the University of Oklahoma having added to the excellence that our program known for. The 2010 coaching staff has two new assistants in Matt Kane and Jon Heath. An up-andcomer in the coaching world, Kane joins us from Barton County Community College where he was the head coach for three years. At Oklahoma, Matt will work with our men’s sprinters and hurdlers, a group I’m sure will have great success under his leadership. Another exciting year is upon us as we continue to reach the level of excellence that the University of Oklahoma aspires to enjoy. The OU Track & Field complex is the site of five home meets in 2010. I look forward to seeing you at the track this season in a race for yet another ano an no othe her er Big Big 12 2 title. tittle le. e.
